She's a cool combination between an artist and a math professor. As a person who doesn't like math and having to take it every morning btw lecture and discussion, I felt like she brought a lot of color in this mostly grey topic (quite literally - pink hair). She teaches in a methodical way and applies math to the real world in her math problems!
By far the worst teacher I've ever had. She is unbelievably incompetent with even basic arithmetic, and often will post "solutions" that are riddled with errors. The final was unlike anything we'd covered in class, and she is insultingly dismissive of questions you're able to squeeze into her nonsense-filled, incoherently overcomplicated lectures.
HIGHLY suggest reading textbook before lecture - everything she says will make a lot more sense if u already have a rough idea. ppts & wkshts given in-class are helpful & good for studying. weekly hw around 10 problems. READ THE BOOK or at least have it out during lecture - it will help u so much. she can definitely b confusing but overall easy imo
Worst math teacher ever. Doesn't explain properly, goes super fast. Instead of being helpful, she is rude to people who she thinks aren't trying. She asks for feedback, yet she tries to defend herself instead of taking the feedback. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. Also the exams are nothing like the practice. TA's are useless too.
Professor Tabing gives SO MUCH HOMEWORK and it doesn't even correlate with the tests she gives! This class is so difficult with her as professor I definitely recommend going to other professors
All of these reviews below are accurate - AVOID AT ALL COST. I would recommend having a background in calculus before taking her class because she is confusing and speeds through the material way too fast. It's supposed to be an intro into calculus, but she teaches it like the students already know the material.
My high school math teachers were more competent than Professor Tabing at teaching simple calculus. She knows her math but is absolutely terrible at describing how to work through problems which often leads to the entire class having no clue what to do or what just happened. Choose a better 118 professor if you want to pass...
The worst professor I have ever had out of all of the teachers I have ever had since preschool. While she knows her math personally, one of her weakest attributes is that she has no clue how to explain or teach the material. She is completely out of touch with her students and is terrible at providing support and assistance to students. Never again
Really bad at explaining the material and a very bad teacher. Avoid her.
Love this Prof! Simply the best! Can't get any more than this! Only the struggling students might need an extra push. Thanks again for a great semester, Mama!
Having taken calculus in HS made this class a lot easier. HW assignments were doable, definitely less than some other MATH 118 teachers. Questions on quizzes and practice exams were similar to exams. Go to her office hours bc she explains better 1 on 1 and go to class for the easy participation points. Allows 2 absences and drops lowest quiz grade.
Professor Tabing is a good person, that's obvious. Her teaching is less effective. She goes through her Calculus (MATH 118) lectures extremely fast. I've never taken calc before, and most of the class has, so she teaches this INTRO class like we all already know what we're doing. Don't take her class if you can manage to get into someone else's
I would say the main challenge of this course is the speed it goes at because they are trying to fit so much information into one semester. There is one homework assignment per week which usually takes me 2 hours &hard. She posts a lot of solutions online that are incorrect and misleading. She also makes errors on notes that my tutor and I caught.
If you haven't taken calculus before, you will likely struggle a lot in this class. Get a tutor early and go over concepts before class starts. Tabing is a very mediocre professor, she wasn't terrible (all the students who hate her only hate her because the class is hard and they got bad grades) but definitely isn't good at explaining hard concepts
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Horrible teacher. Makes math harder than it needs to be. Get's problems wrong 90% of the time. WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD BY FAR. No curve.
Professor Tabing doesn't care about the grades students make in her class. She didn't curve the final exam with a 68% average. She is helpful with her materials that included daily lecture notes, many review packets before exams, and some online answers. The homework isn't bad- usually you end up being able to find the solutions on WileyPlus.
She emailed me about my attendance in her class since I didnt attend bc I already know Calc, but I emailed her twice to ask for an appointment at 2 different instances to ask for Incomplete bc of health problems she completely ignored my email and now I have to retake calc bc I failed her class even though the material was extremely easy.
Does not care what happens to her students and always ready to hand out failing grades without hearing out the student. Can be mean. Makes many errors. If you can find another professor to teach your course, I would do that.
126 is hard whichever teacher you have. Prof Tabing writes good notes though she's not the best at explaining them. Just go over the notes or the book yourself or ask her for clarification during office hours. the in-class problems are always easier than the homework so start on it early. she doesn't curve grades until after the final.
The rating below this literally says shes bad at explaining and to teach yourself lol. Shes the WORST woman and professor. Please avoid her at all costs
Terrible at explanation of mathematical concepts and gives out difficult problems on purpose. So many people in my class were failing. She offers no help and enforces bias into her explanation. NEVER TAKE HER CLASS
Just don't do this to yourself
Tabing should be avoided at all costs. Quizzes and homework is very easy. However, beware of her tests, she provides students with easy practice tests and study materials, then bashes them over the head with extremely complex tests that give even highschool Calc BC students an extremely difficult time.
I went to office hours with a question and she couldn't answer one of my questions and then I went to the math lab and a student answered my question in 3 minutes
SHE IS HORRIBLE. TAKING HER IS THE WORST MISTAKE OF YOUR LIFE.
This was maybe the worst experience I've had in my academic career. I've never seen a teacher make so many mistakes within lectures. No connection with the TA. Tests do not correspond to lectures, and they were much harder than other teachers' exams. Good luck if you've never taken calculus. Don't take her unless you're okay with getting below a C.
Not an amazing teacher, but its math class so I wasn't expecting much. If you've taken calculus in high school, then this course will be a breeze. If not, then you're screwed. The class average is about 70% or so, but I took IB Math SL in high school so MATH118 was a joke. I would recommend khan academy to subsidize the lectures. Go to office hours
Don't take this class. I've never seen a professor make so many careless mistakes in lecture while carrying an arrogant and entitled attitude. She gives no care to students, and often raised her voice or chuckled when she deemed a question trivial. Extremely rude and unprofessional, and has no patience. Tabing makes Calc harder than it should be.
Very nice and accommodating professor. Sometimes she can be hard at explaining concepts which result in some major confusion on tests but she is a very lenient and upbeat person. To succeed, try a lot of outside studying
Don't take her, never knew a professor can be this bad.
Pretty sure I should have gotten a B+ but it's whatever. Not as bad as the other posts make her out to be; I think people just let their hate of Calculus affect their reviews. 60% of your grade is on two midterms and a final. You NEED to practice if you want to do well. I admire her as a person (she's funny), and she is an above average professor.
Tabing is super outbeat and fun! That being said, I think she may forget that not everyone has already obtained a degree in math--her explanations usually skip over details that can make or break a student's understanding of the topic. Her energy is chaotic, so sometimes it's hard to hold on in lecture. Discussion/TA will either help or hurt you.
Tabing is really enthusiastic but unfortunately she's an awful lecturer. She assumes that people have taken calculus before and consequently often skips over important topics and sometimes said that her answers were incorrect. If you want to do well in the class, you either have to teach yourself the material or naturally understand calculus
It has only been three weeks into class but just wanted to rate Prof Tabing because I was nervous to take her class due to reading previous(and limited) rate my prof ratings! Grades nicely and assumes no one has taken much calc (unlike prof Emerson whose class I switched out of). Emerson was fast-paced, class was very large, and he was intense.
Professor Tabing was a good professor, homework was doable as long as you start early and quizzes mimicked discussion and lecture problems. The hardest part of her class was the tests as the problems were much harder than quizzes and HW so get ready to study concepts and problem-solving strategies. She's a great teacher and so caring.
Professor Tabing is a solid choice for Math125! I was honestly scared to take it at first (because she had such a poor rating on this site), but she was actually very kind and knowledgeable. Lectures were great, especially since she prints out handouts for you to take notes on. The hardest part was the tests, but they're not impossible!
MATH125 exams are controlled by math department so prof did the best to prepare us for them. homework is a lot but that also really isn't her fault bc it's the same for all teachers. Class is about understanding concepts and lenient with algebra mistakes. I recommend doing the projects for extra credit bc I wish I had! woulda failed with diff prof
I was super excited when I went to class for the first time because she was a woman in STEM, super young, super cool blue hair. She ended up being the most unclear lecturer and incredibly unsympathetic to her students her weren't doing well. Telling your students they really have no excuse to fail during OH isn't really uplifting.
tabing's teaching is unclear & unsympathetic. her tests are way more complicated than her practice problems, impossible to pass. her lectures are unclear and she doesn't make sure students are understanding the material, which is where the textbook comes in handy. while she's sweet, it seems like she's more against our advancement than for it.
Exams are tough, and will give you a lot of tricky questions. Doesn't even provide solutions for exam prep. Definitely better options out there if you care about your GPA
Prof Tabing was nice enough but DO NOT take this class if you haven't taken calculus before. She's not very good at explaining things clearly. That being said, she does know math very well. The exams are horrendous and crammed.
Dr. Tabing seems super cool as a person and has a really sick style, but do not take this class if you've never done calc before. I got an A in AP Calc in HS and ended up taking this class P/NP cause my grade sucked (even tho I'd done all the content b4). The worksheets and quizzes are pretty easy, lectures are clear, but the exams are impossible.
DO NOT take any of her classes. Trust
Don't do it. Avoid her at all costs. She's very nice and understanding, but she's terrible at explaining concepts. Her worksheets never line up with what was taught in lecture and the TA explained things differently. The tests are horrendous and they make up most of your grade. Get the textbook to help you study but homework is not required.
Tabing teaches math is a confusing way so if you do not have previous knowledge in calculus then this class will be difficult. However, pre-lecture quizzes, worksheets, and quizzes can save your grade. Exams are content heavy. This is doable if you work for it.
Prof Tabing's teaching is very unsympathetic and confusing. The course can feel as if it hard to pass. The midterms are hard with no curve while the worksheets and quizzes were easier. Some worksheets didn't reflect what we learned during lectures, and the TAs couldn't even solve some of the problems. I would take the class with another professor.
The midterms and final exam are ridiculously difficult--much harder than the weekly quizzes--and require much studying. Prof. Tabing is nice and cares about her students, but sometimes her teaching style is chaotic and confusing to follow. She's usually available to answer questions or work through problems.
Class is crazy hard. I considered myself a math person and it crushed me. The pacing of the class is insane, the final is absurdly hard (dropped my grade a full letter after days of studying), and your grade is essentially your scores on your 3 exams. Tabing isn't bad, but not a great teacher. exams are 3 times as hard is in-person class work
I regret taking this class with Prof Tabing. Tests make up most of your grade but, since her teaching is all over the place and way too fast paced, you will likely see your grade drop tremendously with each test. Also, there was definitely a disconnect between her and the TA. The final exam is impossible and you will feel unprepared no matter what
Please avoid her at all costs. Prepare to teach yourself. Her lecturing is very unclear and the exams are crazy hard. Final exam was extremely difficult as well as the midterms. She can be cold and unsympathetic to students who are struggling with her class. There is no support system either. There are definitely better options at USC.
I don't know where all the negative feedback is coming from, but I enjoyed my time with Professor Tabing in her MATH 125 class. She does make frequent arithmetic mistakes, but her explanations are clear and she is very accessible outside of class, especially @ office hours. She provided many practice problems. As long as you put in work, its fine.
Tests are very hard, more difficult than quizzes/wkshts. Lectures can be rushed/messy, since there is so much arithmetic involved. But: she is accessible during OH and provides detailed explanations and provides many practice questions/exams to work through. Indpt. practice is necessary, bcs lectures+wkshts aren't enough to understand everything.
Professor Tabing is the worst teacher here at USC. Her tests are completely different than what she teaches in class. I would suggest getting a tutor if youre going to take her. She makes sure to have 70% average on tests and wont even curve the exams.
Prof. Tabing was alright at teaching if you've taken Calc before. She put topics on the worksheets that we hadn't covered in class. Her quizzes were pretty easy but the exams were much more difficult, esp compared to other classes. And when multiple students expressed their concerns about the exam she dismissed them as it was "do-able" for her.
Horrible, cruel, avoid at all costs.
Reports innocent students to SJACS and exams are hard. Stay away.
Poor professor who is unable to adequately explain some of her own questions. The application-based questions used on her worksheets are borrowed from previous Math 125 finals, and her midterms are not similar to the quizzes and worksheets. Avoid- definitely take Warners class instead.
She is very caring and accessible if you have questions. Her exams are harder than class notes and worksheets, but she provides previous semesters exams for practice. Just make sure you understand each problem on the practice exams and you will succeed! They are very consistent in terms of difficulty
Prof Tabing isn't as bad as some reviews may have you believe. Yes Calc 2 isn't fun and yes she isn't the best lecturer, (much better to rely on Organic Chem Tutor or other youtube Math Lectures) however she does try her best to be clear and concise. 30% of her midterms also contains easy group work which is generous. Not the best, not the worst.
I love Dr. Tabing! Math at USC is really hard, but she made it bearable and is always available outside of class. You have to put in the work, though, and you really have to work for an A (as in you have to do well on the final, which is written by the math department, but Dr. Tabing's portion of the course really is doable).
Love her
I don't know why Prof Tabing got so many bad reviews on here, I really loved her teaching style/ class. I switched from another prof to her and hers was SO much better. She takes time to actually explain, and takes into account student feedback. She literally switched lecture styles bc someone asked her to. So sweet! Don't be scared to take her!
Lectures are very confusing & worksheets are much harder than whats taught in lecture. Professor teaches like shes unsure about the material and is overall very sloppy but she tries and listens to feedback.
Felicia Tabing was the worst math professor Ive ever had. She never coordinated with her TAs and made concepts a lot harder than they needed to be. Notes are messy. She considers a C-B to be a good range of grades, so if youre a high achieving student looking for an A, AVOID her at all costs. She will not help you get past a B range.
My strongest word of advice: avoid Calculus at USC. My experience with Prof Tabing was sub-par at best. Seemed to rarely coordinate with TAs, graded unnecessarily harsh, and made the course content more confusing than it needed to be. A grade of "B or C" is considered to be proficient. If you want an A, I recommend avoiding this class.
I really loved Dr. Tabing. I feel like she was very clear with the content that was being taught and explained topics well. You will know what is on the exams, but they can be difficult so make sure to study well. I thought her style of lecture was straight forward and effective, and I would recommend taking her class.
Dr. Tabing uses a mastery system in which you check off learning objectives to get an A. You just have to do a type of problem right 2 times, there are plenty of opportunities to check those off and you get 5 extra makeup chances right up till the final. Tbh if you just attempted the homework and listened mostly in lectures an A is easy af.
Although her grading system was initially confusing, the mastery system she uses really helps you out. Tests aren't make or break and she gives you multiple opportunities throughout the semester to master previous learning objectives to get an A. As long as you follow along, put in the work, and study, it honestly isn't challenging to receive an A.
Professor Tabing was a great professor. She gave you multiple chances to make up credit for missed problems on tests (except the final). Very accessible during her office hours and is happy to help. It's a hard class but she presents resources to help you suceed.
I can tell she is a gifted professor but omg...HORRIBLE CLASSROOM STRATEDGIES!!!!! Lot's of crying, frustration, and giving up for me. Although her lectures are easy to understand, her quizzes and tests are so hard!!!!!!!!!!!1
Initially going into the class I thought it was EXTREMELY confusing and made no sense. But when you get into the class more it really isn't bad. Her Mastery grading system seems weird, but it helps your grade ALOT at the end of the day. Plus you get more than one change to gain mastery on all of the objectives. Go to discussion & Practice!!
Dr Tabing is an exceptional math professor. She provides lecture notes before class begins, you can do the class on zoom, and if you do the optional homework you have the ability to correct quizzes and exams. I took AP Calc AB and scored a 3, but she is overall a very kindhearted professor, and is always willing to provide help if you ask.
Reading her reviews, I was scared going into the class. Now that I have taken the class, I can safely say she is one of the best professors I have had. She is so sweet and wants you to do well. If you do bad on a quiz or exam, you can do corrections for full credit. Definitely take her class if you want to pass calc.
TAKE AT YOUR OWN RISK! Professor Tabing has potential! She has engaging lectures but is a shit grader and an awful math professor as of the moment. So avoid taking her if you don't want your grade to suffer!!! Her grading system is shit but she is very accessible outside of class. Because of her my GPA is shit right now. Never again!
The worst math professor I have ever had avoid her at all costs doesn't make time for her students and grading system is very confusing.
Its super easy to get credit for the entire year except when it comes to the final. she is not the best at teaching, does not answer questions well and does not give feedback but she is a sweet lady.
Professor Tabing's lectures are difficult to learn from and very boring, but if you do the work you are guaranteed an A- in this class. This is due to the new grading structure, which allows students to complete practice work for quiz corrections, meaning if you put in the time you cannot get a low grade.
Tabing is a very pleasant, kind, and understanding person. However her lectures are boring and do not well prepare you for quizzes or exams. The way the grading system is set up is really nice though because if you do all the work it's not challenging to get an A.
LOVE! Very caring, approachable, kind, and accessible. Grading criteria is abundantly clear and it is very easy to do well if you keep up with the work. Lot of work, though. I learned a lot, and she's the only math teacher I've ever had who actually makes sure students learn and master work rather than just passing a test.
I LOVED Professor Tabing's teaching and grading structure. She provides a lot of opportunities to make up for missed questions on quizzes and get full credit. Every class is recorded, so you can watch back if you didn't fully understand a concept or miss a class. This level of flexibility was vital.
the bad ratings scared me but she isn't even that bad. Her grading system allows for a lot of make ups and its easy to get a decent grade just sometimes in class she explains concepts in a confusing way but she makes sure all students understand.
Extremely bad at explaining questions from her own lecture outlines. often seems confused by the material that she herself is teaching. if you want to learn calculus or if you want a good grade, do not take this class.
Professor Tabing is a great person overall, and the way she structures her class is nice because it gives you the opportunity to get an A if you do the work, but there is a quiz every week and on the quizzes you need to get the entire question right to get the point, otherwise it's wrong. She doesn't do much to prepare you for the final as well.
All in all, a great professor. Bases your grade on attendance and weekly quizzes. Corrections can be done on said quizzes, so an A is 100% achievable if the student puts in the work. Her lectures are clear. For the most part, she's accommodating and let's you complete the attendance based assignments early if you need to miss class.
She teaches and speaks really fast, and expects you to understand very quickly.
She teaches at a rate inwhich I cannnot keep up. Doesn't know basic algebra.
In order to get an A you must attend almost all classes in order to get enough points. Lots of homework. The grading structure is easier than the other 118 classes and if you do all the work it is easy to get a good grade
Worst professor I have ever had. So unprofessional. She didn't accept work that was late while I had covid. Terrible at explaining topics because she goes really fast.
I can confidently say that my time spent in Tabing's calculus class was the epitome of academic misery. This so-called "teacher" managed to transform the fascinating world of calculus into an excruciatingly painful journey that left me yearning for the sweet release of dropping the course altogether.
The grading contract this class follows makes it simple for a student to get a decent grade. However, what is taught in lectures does not accurately reflect the difficulty of the final exam. Attend her office hours, do some homework, show up to class (exit tickets count toward your practice activities score) and you'll be fine.
couldn't teach a fish to swim
If youre looking at these reviews and thinking "she cant be that bad". She is. I said the same thing to myself and now im 10 weeks into her class and it is the most awful experience of my life, and Im a mechanical engineer so that says alot. Dont take it.
The professor grades the class in a really complicated way. Oftentimes it seems like they do not know what they are teaching and the examples solved during class do not compare to the questions on tests. Do not take.
take anyone else if you can. i got stuck with her and she makes calc way worse than it needs to be. plus her grading scale may seem like it will help you but it really doesnt. if you get 29/30 mastery points and 29/30 proficiency points you get a D???????????? but if you got 17/30 mastery points and 30/30 proficiency points you get a B? dont do it
Terrible. Took her last year. Does not belong in education. Classes are on mastery topics that are presented in an unnecessarily complex way, designed to ensure failure. She is borderline and scary. Plastic Professor. She has destroyed my mental health. DO NOT TAKE.
This class is not for you if you like a traditional grading style. Professor Tabing makes it extremely difficult to pass the class with an A even given the chance to retake quizzes; the problems always changed to a different line of questioning than the previous one. Her class is hard to follow, and I don't recommend it to anyone.
If you can change sections do it before you can't switch.
The setup of this class was definitely different compared to every other class I've ever taken, but it worked for me. She uses a "mastery-based" grading system that prioritizes consistency in all areas of evaluation (homework, exams, etc.) but an A is possible if you put in the effort. Previous calculus knowledge helped me a lot though.
Prof Tabing isn't as bad as the reviews say. The only thing that is true about the reviews is her awkward grading system. She grades based on these mastery and proficiency points, kind of like a game. However, she does give you multiple chances, even at the end of the course, to obtain these points. so just study hard and go to office hours
X. X
avoid at all costs! Grading system seems nice, but will likely screw you up in the end; you might get 1 or 2 grade levels below what you would've gotten with a typical normal grading scale. Quizzes every week. Quizzes and homework are super hard; the lectures do not prepare you for this. Bad at explaining concepts during lecture.
I feel like there's a lot of unwarranted hate in these ratings. I personally like Prof. Tabing. That said, I can see why some people would want more direct assistance if they are struggling. That said, I don't think you should avoid professor Tabing. She seems like a nice person. Just participate and you'll be fine.
Definitely take prof Tabing's class if you can't handle the stress of midterms or final. She has a nice grading system that breaks materials into learning objectives. By completing these learning objectives, the midterms are not mandatory to take. Her lectures are clear and easy to handle. The annotated lecture slides and worksheets are useful
Not lenient. Exams take place every week.
Quiz every week where you have 10 learning objectives that basically determine your grade. If you even mess up a little, it can cause you to lose a whole letter grade, especially since quiz retakes get harder and harder. Not lenient at all with grading. Tough grading scale that looks amusing, but turns out to disadvantage some people.
If you've never taken calculus or struggle with math, she and her TAs will offer no support. She doesn't understand her confusing syllabus, and her grading system hurts students. She has also lied to my class on various occasions. Sadly, the math office cannot help her students because they're also confused about what she teaches.
Her confusion is not helpful to her students. She also struggled to communicate with her TAs. Overall, it was a beyond horrible experience.
Honestly, worst class I've ever taken in my life- the contents were interesting enough, but the professor has no idea how to teach and just feels perpetually nervous. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Professor Tabing was decent. My actual rating for her would be a 3.5 but I rounded up to a 4 because her average is a little low. She does a decent job of explaining things, but the problems on her quizzes were almost always much harder than anything we did in lecture. Her grading system is very complicated, but she's still a decent option for 125.
Tabing is a great option. She cares about her students' success and is solid at explaining the content. Quiz probs are harder than what's given in lecture, so be aware of that. With her unique grading system, go to lecture, consistently do ur hw worksheets (she allows regrades), study for quizzes, and pass the final with a C, ur guaranteed an A-
Saw another review that said "couldn't teach a fish to swim" and thats probably the best way to describe it. Easy class if you're already good at calc but if u actually hope to learn something good luck..
Professor Tabing's MATH125 class has a unique grading system, but with effort, an A is achievable. Lectures can be fast-paced, so using unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helps solidify the concepts.
A mathematics GE for arts majors but the professor doesnt care. The content is scattered and the professor doesnt teach, assuming students know advanced math principles. No tests or quizzes so not hard to pass BUT every class is soo painfully awkward and boring and the professor goes back on the things shes taught, making everything confusing
First time taking calc, wouldn't suggest her if you're new. Explained simple problems in lectures, then the homework/quizzes were so much more difficult. Weekly quizzes during discussion, was very awful because I had an 8am discussion. Final exam curve was generous, but if you do get Tabing, make sure to fully grasp her grading system. It's obtuse.
Abusive...
The professor is so kind and a great teacher. I slacked off and had to catch up at the end but she was so forgiving and just wanted us all to just learn and do the material, which is evident with the way the class is graded which is the most fair I've encountered and gives plenty of changes for redemption.
