Really nice person...terrible teacher...If I were you ,I'd never one of take his class...
I had him the first semsester that he taught. I hope he made improvment. He is a pretty nice guy, but can explain jack. I have had better lectures coming from an inanimate object. He does not collect homework, but his tests are quite difficult. Chemistry is diffcult regardless of the teacher.
If he taught Inorg 1+2, this class would be better. He tried to include subjects from chm463 because few people take it. That makes this class harder.
He was very helpful and was very clear.
The class is unreasonably long and repetitive. His lectures are alright but he doesn't explain things very clearly. I thought his tests were too difficult for this type of class. He pretty much expects you to know everything about every experiment, from what color the product was to the reaction mechanisms.
curved the final grade in chm 237 down after the final exam because the class did too well in the class (that him in a nutshell). Take this course after you with orgo 2, or you will be lost since most of the things he tests you on are on orgo 2 material. Wastes most of class time on mechanisms.
This subject is difficult -- but he was always willing to help. Test were difficult -- but if you study hard -- you will be fine. I liked Prof. Chavez and would take another course with him.
I don't recommend taking this class before finishing CHM 234 and 235. He is a very demanding professor and a terrible teacher. Makes a lot of mistakes in reaction mechanisms and he is not able o explain things clearly.
Good teacher. Clear with expectations. Interesting class. Best chemistry lab you will take.
Does not teach. Do not take, you will regret it...I could teach a class better
Not as bad as the other teacher Chem 2. He has trouble articulating some concepts, tests are hard (multiple choice; around 22 questions). He is extremely helpful, but you MUST ask him for it. Study both powerpoints and out of book, and you'll be fine. Don't buy book package, just get book on Chegg ($35) and lab manual if you need it.
Somewhat lazy, but very helpful if asked for it. Also very fair. Tests are hard, but not if you study all materials. Makes minor mistakes, but not a bad proff. Lecture ppts are on moodle, but got better at lecturing as course went on. Book sucks, but as other people said, don't buy package (waste of $$).
awful. he's too smart to be teaching basic chem classes, doesn't know how to explain concepts. you rely heavily on the text. exam averages are around 50 so he has to curve
Horrible. Tests are too hard. His explanation of concepts are absolutely horrible. Take somewhere else if possible. He is nice and smart- just a very bad teacher. Lab for the class is hell also
He knows what he is doing but he cant relay that to his students. He curves the exams but the average grade for the tests were 57%
Not a good professor. Made too many mistakes. Exams were extremely hard, could not articulate concepts very well. Always confused me. I did not do well and I went to class everyday and am a really good student. Curved but it didn't help that much. Had this class in the summer and it was just a very bad experience over all. And the lab was just...
Chem lab sucks no matter who you take it with, but he didn't help at all. His explanations were sub par; the TA's helped us with everything. The prelab quizzes were irrelevant and extremely difficult. The workload was insane. The experience in lab was confusing and hectic because no one knew what they were doing.
AVOID AT ALL POSSIBLE!!!!! Probably the worst college professor I've ever had. very very hard class. lectures are impossible to stay awake for. He cannot get through a single problem without making a mistake every single time. If you want to pass the class with a good grade you'll be begging for help the whole semester
Do NOT take! He is the worst professor I've had at Oakland. He is hard to hear, extremely boring, doesn't understand how to work the technology in class, and always messes up when doing practice problems. The quizzes are only 5 questions and very hard. He doesn't offer extra credit either!
Chavez is probably the most unclear confusing professor ever. It is a chem 1 class and he expects you to know a lot of stuff that chem 1 students would not know! He is constantly making mistakes on his practice problems that STUDENTS have to correct him on. If you do not enjoy teaching yourself EVERYTHING, do not take him.
Super nice guy, but he's supremely disorganized and unprepared for lecture (clearly doing example problems for the first time upon seeing them in lecture), skips steps during problems, unclear on objectives and no control of the room. Started attending another professors lectures and the difference was night and day. Do not take.
Probably the worst professor I have ever had. A typical lecture will consist of him mumbling through his incredibly vague Powerpoint slides. I learned everything on my own in this class. If you have a question, don't waste your time asking him, look it up online. His exams are not reflective of his homework. He is at least a lenient grader. 2/10
Professor Chavez is a nice man and all, but in my opinion is not a good professor. He does not understand that he is teaching entry level students. Also he had to second guess himself on practice problems because he didnt know if he was right, making the class even more confused. Class average 68% out of 160 students.
He is a nice job but has absolutely horrid communication skills while always never presenting helpful practice problems that are even slightly relavent to the Homework or tests
not to be dramatic or anything but DO NOT take this guy. had him for gen chem 2 in summer worst thing ever. mumbles through everything goes so fast and we always had to correct him. I did way better skipping class and teaching the stuff myself. puts a lot of tricky stuff and expects you to know it. quizzes are 6 Q and 30pts really easy to do bad
Not sure why this professor has a bad rap. Took CHM 1450 with him over summer. Theres a lot of material and the session is condensed to 8 weeks instead of 16 weeks. However, the (3) exams and (6) quizzes were curved. Remembered the average on one exam was 55 so he bumped everyones scores by 15 points to keep the average to 70. Id take him again
Not a good professor. Homework and powerpoints do not help you prepare for the quizzes and exams. I went above and beyond of what was expected of me to study and prepare and it just was not enough. He only curves his quizzes and exams to have the average around a 70%. His exams and quizzes are not fair and do not represent students accurately.
He isn't great at lecturing, but profs aren't trained to present well. I put in the work, and by work I mean 15 to 20 hours of studying a week. I worked with a tutor and pulled my grade up with a 98 on the final. Chem 2 material isn't difficult and his quizzes are fair, stuff we have seen. Tough in 8 weeks because of the volume. Put in the work.
He is too smart to be teaching gen chem 1. He doesn't know how to explain things or simplify them for those who really struggle. His exams are more like gen chem 4 level (really hard!). I would read the book and do practice problems and hope for the best. He had to curve all exams AND the final grades of the class. So don't give up hope!
Random grader for partial credit. Everyone did badly in this class (even though we're all chem majors) and I didn't learn anything. Waste of time. Avoid him if possible. If you can't, just pepper him for a list of things to study and make sure you know everything on that list. Then be prepared for random questions.
Too smart to teach gen chem. He obviously knows what he is talking about, but when he tries to simplify it to teach it he doesn't finish his sentence or talks in circles. His lectures are difficult to follow, and he contradicts himself a lot. Definetly read the book and do other practice problems.
This professor may be hard to follow during lectures but will answer any questions you have. Read the textbook and do all practice questions to fully understand the material. He curves exams to a class average of 70% if it happened to be below that mark. Responds promptly to emails. This class requires a lot of outside of class studying! Work hard.
He's only confusing b/c he is brilliant. Overall, solid gen chem2 prof. He truly tries to answer all questions to the best of his ability. Did a great job with review problems. Go to office hours/ SI for help. READ THE BOOK and do the practice problems---- you'll pass (for sure).
WHEN I SAY DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN, I MEAN IT. If you can chose someone else, do that!! This guy is so bad at teaching and you can't hear him or read what he writes on the board. Wanted to cry every time I walked into class. While he does curve tests, they're hard as HECK. Homework takes HOURS to do. You have to be a genius to get an A in his class!
Don't take chem with this prof. He makes mistakes in his lectures. Homework does not prepare you for his quizzes/exams. They are very difficult and it is easy to do poorly on them. I am an A-B student and spent most of my time on this class and still struggled. Only good thing is he grades on a curve. Easily the worst prof I've ever had at Oakland.
Professor Chavez is familiar with the material he teaches, yet not very good at teaching it. The exams & quizes are difficult and the class averages are always failing before he curves it. His writing is also hard to interpret.
Knows his stuff but is not good at teaching. Does not simplify things enough and will often mumble, trail off, or fail to explain something fully. Quizzes and exams are all incredibly difficult, and worded as though he is trying to trick you on purpose. Do yourself a favor and take it with another prof, even if you have to wait
Had him for Gen Chem II in the summer. Don't take him for Chemistry. I spent on average 6 hours a day everyday studying for this class and I still did poorly. You will get lost in the lectures and have to rely on the book and Pearson website to learn the material. However, the tests are extremely hard and the book WILL NOT prepare you for the test.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. I MEAN IT, DONT TAKE CHEM WITH CHAVEZ. I studied for hours on end 2 weeks or more before every exam and STILL DID POORLY. LIKE WOW NOTHING PREPARED YOU FOR THE EXAMS. WORST PROFESSOR AT OU.
Worst teacher ever. End of discussion.
Professor Chavez just doesn't seem like he enjoys his job. He is recycling the same experiment outlines that still have typos in them, and the amount of work required for this class immensely outweighs the amount of learning done. He doesn't communicate with students, so read the experiment outlines carefully otherwise you won't know a single thing
This professor could NOT care less about his students. His lectures have mistakes, and his examples and homework do not prepare students for his quizzes/ tests. His lack of respect for his students reflects poorly on the CHM Dept. His laziness and lack of effort is a poor reflection on the CHM Dept. Smart people do not always make good teachers. YW
A pathetic effort from a apathetic loafer. I see that people have called him brilliant but that must be in his research because this professor will teach you one way of doing things and then completely change it for the quizzes and tests. He must be a teacher that brags about his failure rate. Also he makes mistakes and doesnt fix it. Avoid him.
Terrible. Avoid at all costs. Doesnt give relevant homework for his quizzes and exams. Seems to just be on autopilot. Students are not learning. He does not seem to mind that nobody understands the stuff. I understand teachers dont get hired to teach but just writing that sentence made me cringe. This man has no passion for his work at all AVOID
Why didnt I read these before I took the class. Please do yourself and your gpa a favor and take any chemistry class with anyone else. This professor is very confusing and gives a tremendous amount of homework that does not help for the quizzes or tests. The lectures are him mumbling and rumbling incoherent nonsense. Not a quality teacher
Had this guy for lab. he is pretty clear when giving instructions but grades labs VERY HARSHLY. If you want to suceed reach out to him via office hours or get help after class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN UNLESS YOU WANT TO FAIL. I've never in my 4 years at OU had a professor this bad. He's completely unreasonable, his lectures drag, his hw takes HOURS to do. I wish i never took this class with him. You can't even read his writing!!! You will end up trying to teach yourself everything and chances are you'll still do bad!
The negative reviews on here are not lying - this is a terrible lecturer. All of his material is riddled with mistakes and his teaching requires so many outside resources to supplement yourself. Absolutely not worth all of the stress he puts you through, especially when his tests are so brutal.
Just. The. Worst.
For his lectures, he uses words that he never taught us, expects his students to understand everything, no time to grasp any learning because the pace of his lectures.quizzes are based off of 3 of the 100 slides we go through, so theres no way of knowing what to study. If this prof. is the only option, wait until another semester to take chemistry
He seems like a nice guy but I guarantee you, you will not understand a word he's saying. He pulls numbers out of thin air and them boom, you're on to your next test/quiz. His homeworks are annoying, you lose credit each time you get an answer wrong. He claims its because it helps students learn but no it doesn't. AND THE HOMEWORK TAKE FOREVER!!!
By far one of the worst professors I've ever had. All he does is read off a PowerPoint. He has a lot of quizzes that he doesn't prepare you well enough for. You miss one question on a quiz, which only has 5 multiple-choice questions, and you get a B on it. The exams are even worse. Take chem with a different professor. Save yourself the stress.
Quiz grades can really mess you up (-1 is a B, no curves). Lots of exams and quizzes, normal at OU though. He does just read things off of a PowerPoint but he is clearly passionate about chemistry. Decently nice guy, but not an outstanding professor. Just do the practice quizzes and problem sets! They set you up for success. Redo them many times!
Terrible lectures, just reads off of slides. His exam problems have wrong answers shown in the multiple choice area. This is true even for his practice problems.
Overall nice, passionate, educated on chem but the class and exams is very challenging and would not recommend taking him. Practice and calculation problems were copied from his notes, makes a review for tests and exams but puts the opposite on exams which was my biggest issue. Curves exams and final grade but save your gpa and take someone else
Decent lectures, difficultly is MUCH harder after quantum mechanics is introduced. ABSOLUTE WORST PART OF THIS PROFESSOR ARE EXAMS AND QUIZZES. He will give you a multiple-choice quiz/exam with questions that contain NO CORRECT CHOICES. It can lead you to confidently choosing the wrong answer, thus getting the question wrong, losing points.
Worst professor I have ever taken! 20% of lectures show up on exams and homework is not relevant to anything you will be asked. Get ready to learn everything from YouTube or other online sources. His lectures consist of him reading slides and not giving any extra knowledge. He is a lenient grader and homework is 25 pts extra credit. GOOD LUCK!
Nice guy and great scientist, but his lectures are not clear and often consist of him making mistakes trying to explain his slides. He spends most of the class period mumbling to himself the material that is on the slides and expects us to know what he is talking about. A majority of his exam questions are concepts that are not covered in class.
Professor Chavez is a very nice professor. He's knowledgeable and fair on the quiz questions. Quiz questions mimic practice quizzes. He explains things better in person, and he respects his students. Would take his class again.
Let me start by saying Chavez is a good and nice guy but a horrible teacher. He doesn't have the skills to keep a class engaged and actively learning, so all of your learning will be completely on your own. Even taking the "in person" lecture class, you are expected to watch all lectures online and come in class with questions only.
No partial credit on exams or quizes. Didn't even teach the class. Smart guy but not good at teaching
he is a smart guy but his teaching is awful. Moodle said class is in-person but its actually online. He has practice quizzes and exams but sometimes the actual quizzes/exams were way harder than the practice. he said that the final was going to be mainly conceptual questions and little math, but It was 50% math questions. Class average was a C.
Please save your grade and don't take this class with this professor. Yes, he is a smart guy and very nice, but he doesn't even lecture even though the class said in-person lecture 3-days a week. He just posted old lectures on moodle for us to watch him read off of the powerpoint slides, and when students asked questions, he refused to explain them
He doesn't really teach well
Took this class a second time after failing it once. I registered on MySail with his section specifically because it had a lecture portion and wasn't an online course. Showed up the first day and he told us the class would be a recitation. I had to withdraw since I failed the first time trying to teach myself. He can't teach, don't recommend him.
Didn't teach
Professor Chavez has been one of the most accessible teachers I have met - offering weekly recitations, personal zoom meetings, and fast emails. He makes sure to answer all questions, even the obvious ones. Exams are fair and curved - there were no surprises the entire semester. I am surprised on his rating, personally I would recommend him.
1210 sat and 3.8 GPA in highschool. Seems like a nice guy but just not a good teacher, I had to teach myself everything outside of class as he explains the reasoning for his answers as “well we know cause we know” or just doesn't explain what he did and why. The reviews are real and I would not choose this professor ever again
Prof. Chavez is a very knowledgeable and well-spoken professor his lectures are very easy to follow and even when you might not understand something he is more than willing to answer any questions you may have. If you take good notes and go through the practice quizzes and tests, then you will have no problem getting a high score in his class.
I did not understand most of what I was learning due to Professor Chavez's lectures. He was nice, but you could tell he did not enjoy being in the classroom. He did not explain what or why he was doing during practice problems. Exams and quizzes were hard. Be prepared to teach yourself.
Grade is dependent on quizzes and exams, he doesn't teach the right way, when lecturing just writes down and doesn't talk or explain, a lot of the lecture is not used on the quizzes or exams, spends a lot of time on the not needed stuff and not enough time on the stuff he tests us on.
For the most part he was an ok professor, however the participation points he assigns at the end of the semester seem to be random. He gave me a bad participation grade even though I went to class and put a lot into the class which moved my grade from a B- to a C+. If you have another option I would take it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR HAIR TO FALL OUT. If you think you are the problem, you are wrong! I have never studied so hard before in my life just to fail, not just get one bad grade, YOU GET A BAD GRADE ON EVERYTHING. Do not waste your time or your money, the second test class average was a 21%, that speaks for itself.
10/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND! My entire grade consists of 4 exams, the final exam and 4 quizzes. No Homework and no ways to boost your grade except hope you do better on the next exam. He is very unclear and inconsistent in lecture, often mumbles to himself in a "thinking out loud" manner instead of speaking to a large group of people.
YOU WILL FAIL.If you want to do well, you MUST teach yourself EVERYTHING from the book,he's there as decoration. doesn't know the content, always gave wrong info.his "teaching" was of scribbling in the slideshow on blank slides, when he has the full copy next to him;so no teaching, just mumbling/writing.class averages were always 40-50.all exam,no hw
Is he an awful professor? Yes. But at least he curves his exams and gives participation points; nonsensically, but I'll take the points compared to the other chem professors at OU. His questions are ridiculously hard and even studying for 8 hours won't help unless you already know the content. TAKE CHEM AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE OR ANYWHERE BUT OU
I had this professor for Lab. He had not idea what he was doing at all. He was not helpful and left me and my group always frustrated and confused. He dosen't put in grades and has confusing explanations. He expected us to know what to do, which lead to everyone figuring things out individually.
Avoid, Avoid, Avoid. If you are stuck with him, just be prepared to be teaching yourself, lecture is useless, test makes up all your grade, no hw, just a small participation grade based how well he knows you i guess. Gen chem not too hard, just teach yourself, organic chemistry tutor is clutch.
He just reads off slides and his handwriting isn't the best. I just taught myself everything on my own. No homework just quizzes and exams and a little participation. His exams averages were all between 45-70%. He does curve. Pick up your quizzes and tests for the participations points.
Literally avoid at all cost, big mistake taking him. He was the only option I had. Just awful. The whole class did horrible but passed because of the curves he gives. I got a B- in Gen chem 1, but an A in Gen chem 2 with a different professor.
Just avoid him, don't even take him if he's your only option, wait until next semester. He doesn't teach at all, he mumbles to himself during his lectures, and he doesn't explain how to use any of the equations you need. He'll give you participation if you pick up your exams/quizzes, which I did, but he still took off points on my attendance.
Do not take unless you want to self teach
