Explains very good, if you forgot something even if it is basic math, he will tell you where it comes from, instead of "you should already know that, that's math for fourth grade" like most of precal and above math professors.
The class started out with 30 and now has 4 people.. he was not willing to change his teaching methods and was not helpful at all.. I have taken science classes, Cal I and II and have found him to be the most stubborn of all professors... Don't take him!
awful, tenured, not helpful, very lazy
Missed a months worth of class in the four month semester! Was not clear at all. Very lazy teacher. Didn't grade tests on time, and waited till the day of the next test to give back the grade from the previous test. Very poor instructor! Not organized!
the worst teacher ever! very lazy, not ready for class, he likes to teach you some stuff that u never see on the exam, I want my money back!!
STEAR CLEAR OF THIS ONE!! Very stubborn and condesending to students. Had the need to be intimidating toward most of the students. Never heard so many students use four-letter words about a prof. He seems to a cultural "machismo" thing going on. No regard for students. His way or the highway.
if u r a smart person trying to refresh ur memory, don't take this prof He is intimidated by people who r smarter than him. he make u feel like ur always wrong. he says the class is 4 every1 2 learn from each other but when u answer questions, he makes it clear he doesn't want u 2 answer.
he tells pretty corny jokes but his teaching is pretty easy
I like his analogies and he got through. I wish he had been more approachable in class. Several of us commented that we were "afraid" to ask a question, and even more afraid to answer. His interest in "Making" you learn was good but excessive. Sometimes you HAVE you answer the student. All in all I learned something.
this professor is rude i was asign to 1314 night class and these professor showed up with an actitude he made the hole class to change the book. he treat the class if we do not liked to ask the math department. I guess he is not capable to teach with another book since he seam like he keep using the same test over and over.
This guy is rude and grades very tough. Every little thing counts off. Also, the phrase"there is no stupid question" does not exist.
this professor is very rude and machista he things that every latino cheat he is not helpfull at all.
this professor is very rude and he likes to put you down if you are hispanic. he had very poor teaching skills in math.
****!! hate the way he teached the class, hope the dean do something about this!!
I enjoyed this class last night. I like that he did a review of College Algebra. He took into consideration that some of us have been out of school for a while and needed a refresher lesson. For those who didn't enjoy his class, maybe it's not for you at this time and you need a little more refreshing.
Awful. Lazy. He claims we're the "drivers" and doesn't teach us, he just asks questions all class period, but doesn't correct us if we're wrong. If someone realizes ti's wrong, he'll pause and grin and act like he totally knew it the whole time and say, "Well, y'all are the drivers, you have to tell ME how to do. Um, no, that's YOUR job.
Excellent teacher, have had him for two other classes. Do the homework, study the reviews for tests and you will have no problems.
I had a hard time understanding the way he explains problems. By our 3rd exam, there was 5 of us left & I dropped after that. His teaching technique is bad. He expects u to do 100 problems for HW before teaching it. He does say "there's no such thing as a stupid question" & he often gets u to second guess urself when u ask him to explain a problem.
summer 04, I don't recommed this professor; if you are a person who works alot! He is not the one to take even if you try hard, show up to class on time, and ask him questions; you will not pass his class! He just looks at you tells you to get some more rest! He does not help you with your math problems at all! He needs to go back to ST.Phillups!
Very helpful. If you try to do the problems and work with him, he is the best instructor. If you are lazy and only want to get by, this is NOT the class for you.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!!! His teaching methods are vague!! He likes to teach and give examples that are easy, but puts the hard ones on the test. Not to mention he loves to make up his own problems!!! He gives you a review with problems you have never seen before because "he" makes up every problem. He doesn't give us the answers to his review to see i
this teacher is lazy and makes you work problems on the broad. The fist day he expalins the problems step by step, now he skips steps and expects us to know what we are doing. how can we learn if his not teaching.
I see a lot of comments based on subjective things like having to do "homework" & "studying." If you are looking to breeze by don't take this teacher. He'll teach you, & help you. I work 40 hours a week. It takes effort. He encourages questions. He absolutely will not embarass you. He is kind & considerate professor. He stayed an hour after class.
Horrible, absolutely horrible, I'm not bad at math and I studied incessently and still failed 3 tests, counts off for minor minor things, there was no winning. Especially don't take him during Summer!!
Can be confusing. Is not clear on what he expects. Is not clear on what is gonna be on the test. I dont recommend him. Sorry
Horrible teacher, thinks to much of himself, not there to help you but challenge you. Keeps his students 10 to 15 minutes after class on purpose and hands out test review at that time so those who left won't get it. Gets mad when you want to leave when class is over if you don't stay behind. takes role way after class is over too. don't take him!!
the best teacher i ever had, every smart and helpful
you must show up every day...keep on top of readings and portfolio and projects!!! lots of work but if u keep up with it all its ok. i got an A
HORRIBLE AND RUDE TEACHER! He doesn't help those who are struggling. He thinks we should know it all. He doesn't work examples, he just writes notes on the board. He doesn't try to help us, even after class. He is very sarcastic with his comments. He is very unprofessional making bad comments about other teachers. I had to drop his class!
Mr. Ortiz by no means is a retard and the last i checked math was about numbers and not fashion. He turned out to be better than what I had set my mind on by giving in to all the gossip. He is very detailed and contrary to the comments very helpful. I never encountered a put down or belittling moment. I had my mind set to negative bt it was changed
I have taken this professor for two different Math courses. In both he made me a better Math student, yes, encourages you to go to board, but he does not embarass you as others have said. He only wishes to help identify the areas where you might be confused. No graded homework. Study for tests, I recommend him absolutely.
Good teacher, gives good notes, but you have to try alot & do your homework. He will not work any problems on the board & only helps you if you tryied working out the problem first. Can be sarcastic & rude at times & he talks bad about part time professors. I only recommend if your willing to work hard.
Professor Ortiz is misunderstood.I was terrified after I read everyone's comments. He is strict and tends to be a tad cocky. But if you ASk for help. He will help you. I took him for summerI last semester. He writes all notes all the board. He is very thorough and his notes are excellent if you miss one day you have missed plenty.I would take him again
great prof. will work with you IF you ask ;)
I hated his class; it was an evening class and kept the class for the WHOLE 3 HOURS and some. He expects you to know everything and doesn't explain things you might have forgotten throughout the years.
I will never take his class again, I usually check rate my professor before I register for classes but I didn?t with him I wish I did. when ever I asked for help he would say I learned it in 0303 not a good teacher to take unless you like to teach yourself
Greatest professor ever. You have to work for your grade but he will also work with you if you are having trouble. If you are lazy, don't take his class. You will have to read, study examples in book. I learned a great deal from his lectures. Teaching method is great.
Great Professor, he will work with you if you talk to him. If you are a lazy person who does not like to read and study, then don't take his class. If you want to learn and become great at math, then sign up for his class. I really liked and enjoyed his teaching method and I learned a great deal in his class. I don't have any negative comments.
i took his class without checking this web site before and i definitely regretted it i had to drop the class dont take him unless you like to teach yourself and have an extremely dull sence of humor
dont take it with this professor.
I did not feel he was very supportive. When asking for help he made me feel stupid.
One of the worst teachers i have ever had!!
This teacher is very wish washy(HE EVEN CONFUSES HIMSELF)More than half of the class dropped it.He assigns a lot of homework and doesn't even grade it.Your grade is determine by 3 exams.THAT'S IT! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU ARE VERY STRONG AT MATH AND KNOW IT AHEAD OF TIME.IF you ask a question he'll say YOU SHOULD HAVE LEARNED THAT ALREADY.
Nice man. Good teacher. but is not clear on what he wants from us and is not clear on whats gonna be on the test, so it makes his tests fairly hard.
Mr. Ortiz is very smart. He also is willing to help you. You must make the effort to keep communication open with him. I also did all my homework and read and studied. This class was not easy for me and I worked very hard. In the end it paid off. Many people in our class had to drop because they did not do well. I recommend you b prepared to work.
took him in the summer so he did rush threw the material and didnt go over all the problems on the test.made alot of errors and students would have to correct him often. i think if he is taken during a regular semester that he wasnt rushed that he would be a good teacher. i still ended up with an A though so i still learned alot
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!! I've always been great at math but in this class my highest grade was a 74?! He isn't approachable and won't repeat things. He answers questions with another question. The first day of class when we introduced ourselves he criticized each one of us.
Awful teacher! Half the class dropped and everyone else is failing!
Mr. Ortiz wants to see his students learn & succeed. His teaching styles are not the best & he is very disorganized. But overall if you show him you are willing & ready to learn, he will appreciate it & make sure you do well. His reviews are VERY similar to his tests so as long as you practice & study, you'll be ok.:)
Great teacher, expalins things very well, will answer questions, and if you need extra help he is willing to help you, you just have to go to the math lab. Would take again. Just not much personality, but great teacher
He is really great nice and always willing to help
Helpful Professor but the class is not exciting at all.
He is a patient man that genuinely cares about each students absorbtion of math. He goes the extra mile to help any student.
He's a good guy.
MR. ORTIZ IS A GREAT TEACHER FOR STUDENTS LIKE ME WHO ARE NOT AS FAST LEARNING AS OTHERS SO I FEEL LIKE I CAN ABSORB WHAT IS TAUGHT AND ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT I AM DOING I WISH I COULD HAVE HIM FOR ALL THE REST OF MY MATH CLASSES!
Class started out at 25, 5 are left 4/5 barely passing. I try to ask for help and get no where. Nice guy but not helpful. Class work is hard. He claims no special favors but yet I've seen others get it. On a good note, his reviews help, only if you can comprehend it all. Class is VERY comprehensive!
Horrible Teacher. He can't teach at all and even has a hard time understanding one's name. I was really good at math until I had this teacher.
He is the WORSE teacher you could ever have....we had an exam the first week of class and only 2 passed out of 30....I dont recommend this teacher what so ever!!!! He is horrible!
This class was difficult material-wise. At first he tells you that he instructs by answering questions not demonstrations. He takes attendance and does not grade homework. To pass this class you MUST do the homework. He has a lot of office time and I went there everyday. I got an A in the class. He rewards students who try.
The least helpful instructor I have ever had. 90% of the class dropped and most of them complained to the dean about how rude and unhelpful he is. After that he gave the whole class a lecture on how you will only pass if he feels like passing you. Very rude and very condescending. It's a wonder he still has a job after all of the complaints!
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER, I REPEAT! DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. HE ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS WITH ANOTHER QUESTION, IF HE CAN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM HE SAYS "OH WE WILL FIGURE OUT LATER, AND NEVER DOES" HALF THE CLASS DROPPED THE OTHER HALF IS FAILING. ALL HE SAYS IS DO THE HOMEWORK, BASICALLY ALL THE QUESTIONS IN THE BOOK, HE WILL NOT PROVIDE A REVIEW!
Course is hard, and the professor has no intention in helping a student understand a certain portion of the material. He states that if your taking three classes, your will be unsuccessful, based on his formula given that he expects you to only focus on his class... Be careful if you sign up for this class!
He was a great teacher. As long as you listen, take notes and do the homework you'll pass. Before class begins he ask if anyone has questions, he is always willing to help. If I could I'd take one of his other classes.
You must go to his classes and try to keep up if you want to pass and you aren't a math genius. If you're having any trouble and you go to talk with him, he will bend over backward to make sure you do well and stay in class, but plan on spending @ least 2 hours per class in the math lab studying and doing homework.
Professor Ortiz is an excellent instructor. The exams, and the class in general, are not easy. You will learn the material well, and it is clear that he takes a great personal interest in the success of each student.
The class wasn't super easy but he gave us a lot of oppurtunities to make-up work and even make-up an exam. He gives you a review that is almost identical to the test and anytime I went to his room during his office hours he was excited to help me figure things out. I'd take him again.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! He would spend an hour teaching HIMSELF how to do a problem, fail miserably trying to teach the class, and then tell us how we should have read the material before class? Be prepared to teach yourself the material if you want to pass. No make-up work/tests/homework was accepted for my class
Professor Ortiz makes it very hard to take notes on his lectures. He constantly goes off tangent and gives examples of other things you might see in future classes which blurs what you really need to learn. Homework is assigned but not picked up until a random day he chooses. He teaches like you already know the material. You MUST teach yourself.
Hes a real Teacher there are not many like him anymore old school Professor with a great attitude. He is the best and is very reasonable. Thank You Ortiz.
He is a very nice guy but terrible teacher. I did understand nothing. We had 3 test and final. More than half of the class disappeared in the middle of the semester. I just read the book for every exam and it was hard to learn math from the book.Another wired thing that he does is giving essay questions from the book in the test!!!!
Hes a nice guy and will help but only if you ask. He tends to only really focus on the students that already know what hes talking about. He grades very odd and takes off points for every step you miss even if the answer is correct, if its not done his way its WRONG and makes your final score very low. Hes great at math but not at teaching it. :/
He is such a nice person but not that great at teaching. Also he wants people to write out the answer something I have never done. I feel like he solves answers more than he teaches. I put in so much time studying and i tried but still had to drop. Half of the class was gone before the drop date, probably 8 out of 26 left at the end.
I was forced to drop his class. This professor is of no help! He will not answer e-mails and posts reviews online the night before the test. He is never there during his office hours and arrives late to class constantly. He works problems on the board and gets the wrong answer all the time, nothing like the book. Do not take him if you want to pass
He's a nice guy, but his teaching is terrible, prior class you won't even know what chapter he's teaching on! This confuses me and his grading is ridiculous, not to mention he only grades tests! and on top of that his tests are only 10 questions long, with at least 2 word problems. He even mentioned himself his class was failing!
I'm doing great in his class, I understand everything bc he works the problems and teaches every step on the board. He makes u go up front to make sure everybody understands. I think he is a great teacher even though, yes, his only way of grading is by exams but they r not hard if you read the book and you do your hw. I thought it'd be way harder!
Do not recommend this teacher.
I read that this professor was terrible, but yet I still tried him anyways. I am into my 2nd year of college and never have dropped a class. This teacher is VERY HARD!!. Yes he is a good teacher but Grades unbelievably hard. if you want to be challenged to the MAX, then i would take this guy, if not DO NOT TAKE HIM!!. He is not very helpfull.
He's a nice man, but a HORRIBLE teacher. I would never recommend him to anyone, ever. He contradicts himself constantly. His grading technique is ridiculous and makes no sense. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He needs to be removed. He hates answering questions and he needs a serious attitude adjustment. Save yourself and do not take him.
I have always struggled with Math I lost all faith in myself after the 1st attempt at the course with a different professor. Mr. Ortiz gave me a second chance and I probably won't ever forget him. It is completely up to the student. He is fair with his grading. If you put forth the effort it won't go unnoticed! Thank you Mr. Ortiz!
IF you come from college not knowing or knowing very little than this class will be very difficult. The Homework is always demanded and the Exams are completely different from the homework. I studied for weeks and weeks and I still failed the exams . AWFUL TEACHER I Love Math But this guy really does not help you at all
This is my hardest class this semester. A few things about Mr. Ortiz...1) doesn't curve grades even if half the class is failing 2) open to answering questions but does it in a confusing way and shows you multiple ways to solve an equation which I find unnecessary. 3) puts up the review just one day before the test 4) lots of quizzes. 5) stubborn
DEFINITELY not an easy course or professor. I busted my butt in that class and barely passed. On the first day of class, the class was completely full, some students even had to stand because there weren't desks available (40+ students) at the end of the course: there were only 6 of us left. SIX STUDENTS. SIX!!! But I will admitI learned A LOT.
By far the worst teacher I have ever seen. Always late and constantly making mistakes on the board. Take it with someone else and save your GPA even if it means being a semester behind.
Mr. Ortiz is a decent guy, his corny jokes will eventually start to grow on you but avoid at all cost! He expects you to know the information and goes very fast. He doesn't explain this information in a helpful way. No curved grades and no answer sheet for the review. I wish I would've listened to these reviews.
Listen to all the reviews. Do not take his class. Book teaches one way and he teaches another. Homework everyday for no grade. Doesn't review at all. Answers must be in complete sentences to his standards.
Súper unorganized!! He says everything is online yet not even he can find his stuff on the folders he adds online. This class is NOT for people who are bad at math. He teaches as if everyone knew what he is talking about. He says homework is not mandatory but he will take it as extra credit. He won't. Also, he's never in his office or replies email
Very unorganized. Starts an exercise and makes mistakes frequently. I took his summer class for Calculus 1, if you don't get distracted by someone moving and writing in the blackboard without any order, you'll get an A. Says homework is not mandatory but asks for it after each exam.
He should stick to teaching business majors. He is unfit to teach stem courses as it stands. Essentially just taking advantage of these students.
The class is one of those where if u slack off for 10 secs you'll be lost! NO CALCULATORS! Ortiz himself cares for students who give effort. He can go through material fast but really depends on how u learn. Good professor, sucky class and always talks about tacos and like wolves *hint*
he is a very tough grader and he posts reviews for exams the night before, and also teaches you in a very confusing way
This is by far the worst teacher I had ever had at sac not very helpful posts the reviews the night before. Writes too fast on the board and also makes mistakes on the board too. Also all of his tests are extremely challenging.
He often makes mistakes and speaks very unclearly. I honestly believed I was good at Math but the way he teaches confuses me.
Just don't choose this teacher unless you already know the material. You will be correcting this professor's work on the board. He doesn't always keep up with his own working on the board, but will fail you for anything
He is supporter to you. If you trust yourself you can pick him
Absolutly horrible. Moves way to fast, does not cover material in an understanding way. Pop quizes with no notice.
Worst professor I've ever taken. You have to know the material before signing up for his class. He is super rude and confrontational. Never explains clearly, and gets upset when questions are asked. Makes mistakes on board. There is no consistency in his class with how he wants problems worked. He is just overall unorganized and plain rude.
I will say that his grading system is nonexistent. The homework is automatically factored in, but the tests and quizzes are not even listed. Finals were done a week ago and I still don't have my grade. Soooooo... there's that. But the class itself was fine. Do the reading. Do the homework. Print the lectures before class. Live with the corny jokes.
This professor to me was just what I needed because he teaches on a chalk board. Ask questions, he is excellent answering any question, doesn't make you feel dumb. He wants his students to learn and will help you if you need it! But doesn't hand out grades you earn what you get! Grade for this class weighs heavy on tests, homework is online. GREAT
He was late almost all semester by 10-15 min. His teaching technique is pretty avrg. Only gives a few tests a semester he takes points off for the smallest things such as whether or not you placed arrows on your graph. He didn't update the canvas grade book the entire semester. He has no problem with trying toembarrassing you in front of the class.
If you're not already good in math don't take him.
he is the best professor that I had at San Antonio College.
Very difficult to understand his teaching. Makes you take a syllabus quiz, than turns around and goes against his own rules, you cannot use your notes on tests. If you are not good at math and need the extra help, go somewhere else! Blames you if you cannot understand what the lecture is about, if you hv questions, you hv to figure it out on ur own
This was one of the worst classes I've taken.Yes, it was completely remote learning. But when you're emailing your professor for assistance and he literally responds with "well there's nothing further I can help you with" that's pretty disheartening.Thank you for one of the worst classes I've taken at SAC. Do yourself a favor and run from this one.
Dropped this class, the professor was not ready at the beginning of the online course. Unable to access course materials until 3rd day of class, technical issues for the entire first week. He was not prepared, yet very vocal about being prepared and completing assignments on time. Worse professor, I have ever had!!! Stay away!
This was absolutely the wort teacher I've ever had shows up late everyday and doesn't explain anything that he shows on board. He makes a lot of mistakes when doing examples and doesn't correct them. His makes assignments due before going over all the material necessary to complete them and says to just figure it out on YouTube. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Left seven assignments, two exams, five SLO quizzes, and the final for the final week of class as if his students didn't have other classes to take. If you intend on taking a virtual math class avoid this one like the plague.
Please do yourself a favor and never take this class! Avoid Fermin Ortiz by any means necessary! Took a week to update his syllabus on the first day, did not utilize canvases calendar assignments option or have any of the test dates scheduled constantly had an attitude and openly criticized under performing students while they weren't present etc..
Would not recommend, unless you are great at math, it is not manageable if you have work. Would recommend an in person class over this.
This class was online on an asynchronous academic schedule. Despite helpful assignment reminders, between a lack of communication, no student support given with questions, and assignment due dates misaligning with the academic calendar, I would not recommend, nor take this class again.
Emailed professor on the 2nd day of class, took 3 days to respond that i should've emailed earlier. Had 3-4 assignments per week, none of which went towards my canvas grade. Based final grade on 3 exam grades. Offered to drop lowest exam grade if I took another exam and he did not follow through and left the low exam grade anyways.
If you take have this professor, make sure you make time for this class. Took this class as a FLEX and it was tough. He releases assignments throughout the week and they're due within 2 days. He did drop the lowest test score, so you had the option to skip the last test, if you were happy with your grade. All test are on lockdown browser/webcam.
HE'S ALWAYS LATE TO CLASS! You are expected to do all the reading and homework on your own with very little notice, and then he will quiz you with 3 or 4 questions during class. He will post an assignment on Friday without any heads-up and then expect you to finish it by Sunday. He will start talking about his family drama and political views.
He is probably the least efficient with class time out of any professor I've had, which is not helped by the fact that he's always late to class. He's constantly in a bad mood, has no respect for his student's time, and is very unclear about assignments. We raced through two whole units in the last two weeks of class. PLEASE, take anyone else!
He is always late for class, but that means less time of his class. He always gives homework and it is not through Canvas, so you can't see it. You will have around 4 quizzes, but he is very flexible. I could not go to one of the quizzes and he allowed me to take it again. You can do homework by clicking "help me solve this".
His class is not for the weak. Please make sure you READ chapter before class. I do recommend having a tutor for his class so you can better understand. Grading criteria is hard to understand. Make sure you check MyLabMath for homework assignments. IF YOU THINK YOUR GOOD IN MATH, TAKE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
It is a completely online course. I chose this because I work 50 hrs a week and have a child but still trying to work toward my degree. He posts assignments and you have 2 days to do them. I usually wait until the weekend to do all my homework since I have more free time. No respect for other lifestyles. It is procrastination, in his words.
if you already struggle with math, i do not recommend taking the 1332 class. it's supposed to be the easiest math class but i had to watch youtube videos on literally every unit so i could pass.
When I tell you to take legit any other math teacher than this dude. He is almost always late, doesn't stay on topic, and explains things in a way to make it very difficult to understand for the basic person. You won't know your final grade until the semester is already over. Not worth it at all take literally anyone else.
Professor Ortiz has a specific teaching style, but engaging with it can be rewarding. The lectures are worth attending - he explains concepts well. Use unstuck ai, the textbook, and attend study sessions to succeed.
Had trouble hearing back from him multiple times. I could not take an exam due to a family member passing. I emailed him 2 days before/ through canvas. He finally responded 2 days after the exam and told me I should of contacted sooner and that he could not give me an extension. It was 'simply not possible'. Not empathetic so be prompt with work.
The worst professor I have ever had, post-assignments out of nowhere, doesn't use a calendar and never responds to emails.
His video lectures suck, & his dogs will bark and he leaves mid-video. He posted 7 quizzes during finals week, probably because he forgot during the year. There's a lot of homework some weeks, none other weeks. His grading system is disorganized, and grades aren't posted on canvas, check Pearson. The only good part was multiple quiz/test attempts.
