Good lectures. Show up and take notes for tests. His test are a little strangely worded because he is ESL. He can be fairly easy going and offers help to students
He is an amazing teacher. He takes time to make sure that everyone understands the material and he creates exams that test your knowledge without overwhelming or intimidating you. Highly recommended!
Very Unclear, hard to understand what he is saying. His lectures don't relate to his tests, and a lot of the time you're not quite sure if he knows what he is talking about. He is also incredibly borring and repeditive. On a good note, his class is fairly easy, and he seams like a fairly nice person, except he sometimes loses his cool and yells at students. I wouldnt reccomend him.
He is a great teacher. He has helped me become very interested in a subject I was unsure about. I would recomend him to anyone interested in science who needs a little extra help.
i would not recommend taking his class. he repeats himself every 2 mins. and keeps asking ppl if they "get it?" he also kind of pushes students comments and questions/answers aside. on the other hand his class is pretty easy and if you need to take it as a requirement than u might want to take it.
if you ever need help with anything, all you have to do is ask, and he will do everything he can to help you! he really cares about his students success, especially if you show him you care about his class.
Agudelo is passionate about students learning. He is an excellent enthusiasitc teacher. He tried to be very clear about information on tests so that the students were prepared to succeed. I would highly reccomend him. He is also a man who expects politeness and extends it to others.
Fernando really knows his subject, but his teaching style is disorganized. Doesn't really seem to have a plan - once he taught us the same class twice, apparently didn't realize he'd already covered it. Does have an annoying verbal habit of asking if you "follow" every 3-4 sentences. Very kind, very connected to students, nice guy to talk with.
His lectures are very clear, organized and interesting. He is very proffesional and doesn't tolarate any disturbance in the class. He is also very helful. At first, he might seem little harsh, but otherwise he is very nice. It took me couple of lectures to get used to his accent, but after that I didn't have any difficulty understanding him.
Fernando is great. Accent is hard at first but you get use to it. He is dedicated to his work, a hard worker also.. I think he is a good person, cares about student achievement.. Good Work
Fernando is so kind and helpful and a really great guy. He is always around to help after class or whenever you need him. Sometimes its hard to understand him because he is from Columbia, but he's a great guy and totally helpful. His tests are easy, just listen to the lectures and read the book. No weird questions.
jumpy talker, at other times speech so slow & soft that it feels like poppies in wizard of oz. spends too much time saying is that clear or r u folowing me, & then doesn't give chance for anyone to answer. so whats the pt? also said current bio theories change all the time so why should we learn?
Fernando is a great professor, it takes a few classes to get used to his accent, but by the end of the semester you'll love him. He is so helpful and really cares about his students and the subject. His tests are fair but you defenitly need to put in time studying and reading. I would highly recommend his class.
Passionate about the subject and VERY knowledgeable. Really cares about his students - is very helpful and encouraging. Wants everyone to learn and pass - tests are easy. Come to class and take notes and you'll be fine. Despite setting a serious tone the first few classes, he's actually very kind and personable. Will take more classes with him!
Fernando sets a no nonsense tone with slackers and class interrupters straight away. His soft tone and heavy accent takes some getting used to. After a couple of weeks you will look forward to going to his class if you are truly interested in learning the subject. He is passionate and sometimes funny. He was very inspirational .
Great teacher. Fascinating. Wants you to think critically about the subject matter. Tests are easy and always covers all test material in class. If you don't miss class you'll get an A. Just take good notes.
His lectures are boring and he tends to go off on tangents.
Class was really intersting and useful in everyday life. Accent was hard to understand at first. Comes on strong and strict at first but lightens up as the days proceed-he Doesn't like people who are late! Term paper is easy but time consuming so don't wait till the last minute.
Fernando is an excellent teacher and extremely knowledgeable. I think he is one of COM's best, highly recommend him. Very nice, too.
He is a great teacher, but in my opinion for those students who have biology background. If you are not a biology major, you must study. He has favorite students. You'll figure out. Plan to read constantly if you are not familiar with the topic. There are three tests during the semester and a long paper. Even though he says he is available to help
Boring lectures - he likes to generalize even thought people learn specifics better. Draws rudimentary stick drawings in chalk even though he has access to a SMART class room where he could show powerpoint. Ask him about the notochord for a good laugh.
Terrible teacher! - very disorganized, never available after class or through email. Terrible textbook selection. Can be very rude as well.
Very good teacher. Detail oriented
In his syllabus he says the "course is designed to provide non-biology major students with an introduction to the structure, function and development of the human body." Then he says the course will "cover anatomy and physiology concepts useful in preparing for careers in wellness-related fields." Which is it?
fernando is one of the most usefull resources at college of marin. his class is all about what you are willing to put into it. he has been a great mentor and is extremely usefull if you are serious. this is not easy course material. he reconizes that if you are taught specifics, you will get lost in the ocean of terms. He teaches by generalizing
You barely have to read the textbook for this class. The professor quizzes you on very specific material he teaches in the classroom, so as long as you attend class and pay attention, you will do fine. He comes off a bit pretentious, and even insulting at times, but I don't think he intentionally means to--seems more like a cultural thing.
Prof. Silva was great. It was really nice to learn from a professor who held a more worldly view of human nutrition than the other professors in the department. Because of his class, I made a lot of positive lifestyle changes. The assignments are fun too.
Awesome. No previous bio knowledge required: I never went to high school and I got an A. Some never bought the book and got an A. Tests from lecture. read a lot to better understand ur notes. Tests MC easy if u review notes. Sit in front b/c he speaks softly with accent. Great teacher though-if u can hear. Im going to take him for Micro.
Difficult to understand at times because of his columbian accent, but is a sweet, old guy that is willing to help you with anything as long as you show interest. He likes hard workers. Make it seem like you're an industrious, hard worker and you'll be a favorite.
Fernando, hmmmm Aside from the hard ass he seems, reading and teaching like a DICTIONARY. The guy is passionate about BIOLOGY. Jokes, fun.... NO WAY. This class is straight forward, reading, 10 pages of notes, 3 hr lecture of intense learning. Pick a different teacher, Strong accent, VERY strong and talks very quietly. I can say though, if you get
Be sure to study every detail for taking exams.
Hard to understand. Don't bother asking questions that are even slightly off topic (even though they relate to it). He'll cut you off and won't answer them. Exams are straight from the lecture, he does NOT believe in study guides so he does not provide any. Don't even bother asking for help or talking to him. He's not understanding or helpful.
Fernando is a passionate teacher. You must attend lectures in order to do well. He truly trys to keep the material simple because the book is so advanced. he realizes and acknowledges that we are in an introduction Biology class and teaches accordingly. Sit in Front, Ask questions and laugh at his jokes - you'll be a favorite.
This class is so hard. I love biology but this class put me to sleep, and the tests kicked my ass. I'm an A student, but I'm having to drop this class because I'm failing. Avoid this class if you can!!
He is passionate about what he teaches. He has an accent. He is kind, and helpful if you go to him and ask him for his help. If he knows you have a problem, he will be there to help you. He is a good man. If you want an A, you have to study real well and do not miss any class. Show that you are interested and work hard- you will be his favorite.
Ethic in Science - A fun class + Easy A. There is no exame. All you need is to write 4 papers. He gives you everything you need. he does not abandon his students, but he leaves the student to do the student's work.
Very unorganized class structure, hard to understand and unwilling to help students unless it is during his one office hour per week. I made in A in the class but used the book to clarify everything he discussed in class. I am generally an A student but had to work harder than usual for his class. Tests had multiple mistakes.
Worst college professor I've had(I have a BS from a 4yr college)Very unorganized class structure, hard to understand and unwilling to help students unless it is during his one office hour per week. Multiple mistakes on his exams so go over them. I'm an A student. I made an A but had to use the book to teach myself everything he discussed in class.
Not clear about what he is teaching at all. Dances all around and repeats things. Not clear about tests, questions are tricky, no study guide. He is certain you ust come to the class because he will cover things that the book doesnt, then I come to class and it's a waste of time. Doesn't answer questions well. Is a really kind soul not a teacher.
Slight accent, but not nearly as bad as other reviews imply. Well structured class, everything is outlined in the syllabus on the first day. Lots of notes. Lectures are interesting; material is presented clearly. No tricky surprises on exams, just concepts from the lectures. Overall excellent, much better than the other two bio profs at Marin.
Very scattered lectures. You have to fully teach yourself from the reading in order to even try to follow him in class. I found him completely unhelpful when I went to his office hours. On exams, it seems like he actually tries to trick you. Seriously...I'm not just whining (I have an A so far). I will NOT take class with him again.
Spends 50% of lecture time defending his teaching methods, which are seriously lacking. Lectures are interesting. Knowledgeable alone doesn't' make him a teacher. Tests are ridiculous...50 trick questions. He doesn't give back test questions, just Scantrons, which is ridiculous as you have no way of learning from your mistakes.
He is an amazing teacher and person! He genuinely cares about his students and our understanding of the material. He has an accent but it is easy to understand him if u sit in the 1st 2 rows. Take notes during lecture... his tests are based on his lectures. They can seem hard due to the verbiage used... but they are very straightforward.Take him!
His accent is understandable after the first few lectures. He doesn't use powerpoint, but writes main topics/words and draws diagrams on the blackboard. He tests on very specific facts, however, and it's usually best to take lecture notes of the random things he brings up. He also goes out of order which can be confusing, but curves exams.
Professor Agudelo-Silva is very knowledgeable and comes to teaching with a lot of actual work experience in the field. He is very encouraging to students who show interest in the materials presented in class and will provide any assistance he can. Anyone who attends class, does the work, asks for help when needed will do fine.
Fernando is one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. Take him if you have the chance!
Great professor! Show put to lecture and read the text, you'll get out of it what you put into it.
Dr. Agudelo Silva is incredible! Attendance is mandatory for success, but his lectures are well worth it. Professor is very intelligent and hilarious. Overall his class is challenging but if you apply yourself, attend class, and ask questions if you feel confused, Dr. Agudelo Silva is there to help and really wants his students to do well. :)
I love biology, but I had a hard time in his class. He is so disorganized. He was jumping between different concepts From different chapters during each session! The exams are confusing and Have many mistakes. Therefore, he had to review the scores to correct them after each exam. I won't take any biology courses with him!
Fernando is strict when it comes to arriving on time and staying quite in class. His tests are very straight forward as long as you take good notes! The questions on the test comes directly from his labs and lecture, which is great. He is very helpful!! I had him for both nutrition and BIO 112B. You also get to go on field trips for BIO 112B!
I spent a great semester with Mr. Aguedelo-Silva. He is clear and if you attend the class and take notes everything is easy.
IMPOSSIBLE. Avoid at all costs, though not much better other choices here. Very unclear in lectures, and whatever you do, DON'T ask a question in class he will make you look stupid.
IMPOSSIBLE. Very unclear in his lectures, relies heavily on the textbook. Whatever you do don't ask a question in class, he'll make you look stupid.
Absolutely horrible. Don't take this class unless you take it with a group. You cannot understand a word he says. He doesn't give back test questions so u can't learn. He never even gave me two of my tests back and never could find them.??? You cannot read his writing. He is all over the place. And some things on the test he neeeeever said
Prof Agudelo-Silva has passion for his class. In his BIO 107 class he knew we were just beginners in Human Biology so he tries to teach in layman's terms so that we can understand the concepts better. Yes, he does go back on chapters but that's because info on previous chapter correlates w/ the chapter your on. Attendance and good notes are must.
He is very difficult to understand and even hear. Many concepts on tests are often not discussed in class. The textbook is useless so you can't even teach yourself. Avoid his class!
he is s great professor. HIs accent is strong but his knowledge is VAST! and he is passionate about his teaching and about ecology. HIs class is never boring and the field trips are fun
Vast knowladge makes Agudelo-Silva a valuable teacher to have. If you are willing to learn he will do whatever necessary for you to understand the concepts which are presented one simple idea at a time. His serene nature makes him an intuitive teacher and his passion for environmental science is inspiring. ENVS class an eye-opening enrichment.
I feel so blessed to have taken his class before getting into the tougher subjects of science. He is sincere , disciplined and true to his profession. He is helpful to all but goes out of his way for students who make sincere efforts to learn his subject. He is a very good teacher and a very intelligent soul!
Lectures have no real structure. Hard to follow around with the book because he tends to jump around. Tests were over a large amount of material, but finite details. Strange way of grading. Knows his stuff and usually available in office. Slight accent.
His accent is very discracting for starters but an instuctor that is worth hisher salt should still be able to engage with the class enough to make it interesting despite having an accent. His lectures are extremely dry, and do little to make the material relateable for people. If you're just looking to get bio credit for GEs, GET OUT NOW.
Disorganized lectures and class as a whole. Didn't learn much of anything the entire semester. Disappointment for someone who usually LOVES biology.
Loved loved loved Agudelo, I took Bio 110 last semester and I still remember everything . There's a lot of material to digest and the museums observations are long and boring. He's very passionate and loves what he teaches, he wants his students to do well. If you are not into his class and start disturbing during lectures, he will let you know!
Professor Agudulo-Silva is by far the best teacher I've had here. He is always there for you and truly cares about his class, the material covered, and his students. I wish he would teach all of my classes!
Fernando is most superior teacher I have ever had. Not only does he meticulously think about his teaching styles, he approaches science in a intelligent, accurate and non biased way. I managed to learn parts of economics, teaching methods, geology, philosophy, etc from him. He changed the way I see the world and I will be forever grateful.
I think he was an amazing teacher with a passion for biology. Take notes, show him you are trying, and he will respect you! He teaches so many classes and is always there to help if you need it. One of the best!
Don't buy the textbook. He won't care if you miss class, but you'll miss everything bc it all comes from him, NO POWERPOINTS. 4 quizzes, 4 tests, 3 EASY homework assignments (one is a paper). THE ONLY TEACHER THAT GOT ME TO UNDERSTAND SCIENCE. I WISH I COULD TAKE EVERY CLASS W/ HIM. Engage w/ him and he'll love you and offer ext cred. DON'T BE LATE
I love this guy! Yes, he is a bit standoffish, but his lectures are amazing. I hear he's fine if you go to OHs, but I didn't ever need to. Super easy to take notes (no ppt). Exams straight from lecture. Don't bother buying the text.
Hands down the best teacher I've ever had. He really wants you to do well and will do everything he can to make sure you get the material while in class. If you still have trouble go to him during office hours. His class is all about the lectures, which are interesting and engaging. Would HIGHLY recommend taking the class.
Fernando is a good person and biologist, but terrible as a professor. His lectures are all over the place. And he talks so quietly that sitting in the first few rows is a must. I read the book to understand the material. The labs are relatively easy. The exams had a lot of detailed questions that were not talked about in class.
What a great professor! Loves what he does, and it shows. Lectures are long and heavy, and they can jump from one concept to the next; a little disorganized. But, tests are all based on what he says and your notes --- so take notes wisely, don't skip class, and always bring your book as he uses it A LOT for reference during lecture.
Wonderful instructor. A wealth of knowledge.
Fernando is one of the best teachers I have ever had. His knowledge of all things ecology and biology makes working with him a breeze, and he takes a subject which is boring and makes it inspirational. You do need to attend class and take good notes, but his lectures are much better than the typical. His interest really rubs off on you.
I took his nutrition night class one day a week for 3 hours and it was the most boring class ever. He isn't hard but he is very bad at telling instruction and what he tells you is very broad so it makes the class kinda difficult. Make sure to check with him about your grade because he always either puts the wrong grade in or doesnt grade it...
I have taken 3 classes with this prof, and he is AMAZING! He could seem intimidating at first, but if you seek help from him, he opens up as a teacher and makes sure that you pass. I wish he taught all the biology classes at COM.
Fernando is the reason that I'm going into ecology, he's amazing and inspirational if you take the time to talk to him outside of class!
He wasn't respectful of the test-taking accommodations that I set up with SAS. He delayed giving back a test for over a month despite intervention from SAS and his dean. When I did get my grades, they didn't make sense to me or my aides. This incident caused so much stress that I withdrew. I've learned the material much better from another program.
Knowledgable, and seems to want the class to do well, enjoy the material and be prepared for future courses, as well as use the knowledge in their daily lives. One of the best teachers at COM.
A philosopher who is both graceful and scatterbrained. Be punctual.
One of the best professors at COM. I took intro to Biology with him and I had a really good experience. He is able to summarize different ideas and concepts in a way that students can understand very well. He is also a great mentor. If you are interested in science/biology go to his office hours! He will go out of his way to help you succeed.
This class is an easy A as long as you go to the lectures. Although lectures aren't mandatory, it makes it so you don't actually have to do any of the readings. He lectures on exactly what will be on the test and quizzes. He goes pretty slow, which can be boring at times. It was an easy A for me. I also took nutrition with him and got an easy A.
Honestly, he was just awful, it's hard to understand anything he says and he doesn't project his voice very well either so it's impossible to really take any interest in what he's saying. I wouldn't ask a question in his class unless you want to be mildly embarrassed, his grading also makes absolutely no sense. I would stay away
He has an absolutely bonkers grading system. My grade sat at around 113-115% for MONTHS (getting A's on everything, doing generally well) and then I missed a single quiz (worth 12 points) and my grade tanked to 63% two weeks before the final. How does a 12 point quiz tank a grade by 50%? It doesn't make any sense.
Definitely would not recommend taking Fernando. He speaks very poor English and it's hard to hear him when he speaks. I got out of there quick with a refund, some students probably not as lucky. He doesn't run an overall good course and I would highly not recommend this class.
he's the goat
His lectures mostly cover his tests, but you will still be expected to read the textbook! Sit near the front of the class as he is very soft-spoken. Very passionate and knowledgeable of the subject, and respected because of it! If you attend the lectures and do the assigned reading, you'll pass with flying colors.
The best biology professor at COM. His love for biology is evident in his lecture style and demeanor. Lecture can be all over the place but make sure to ask questions in and outside of class if needed because he is always willing to help. Take good lecture notes and you'll be fine
The instructor that he loves teaching biology, it is worth taking a class with him.
he's the goat. tbh didn't even read the textbook...but as long as you show up to class and take some notes you'll do really well on the tests.
Fernando demonstrates clear passion for both the material and his students success. He is a fair tester, and reading the textbook fully encompasses what you need to know and much more. With that said, his lectures are disorganized and do not follow really any order. Overall he is very knowledgeable and a great complement to the textbook.
Professor Agudelo-Silva was one of my most favorite professors I have ever had. He is wildly passionate about what he does and he loves engaging with the class in very thought out discussions surrounding biology. He enjoys when people are vocal and ask questions. I wish I could take this class over again because he was so wonderful!
PT. 1 Professor Agudelo-Silva is amazing! Took him as my first college class and easily passed with an A and 100s on tests/ quizzes. The syllabus is very straightforward and offers extra credit on tests—all multiple choice. He's extremely kind and passionate about biology, and don't be afraid to visit him during office hours if you need help.
PT. 2 He's quiet, so make sure to sit close to the front. Take notes exactly how he words things. He makes it straightforward. I never used the textbook, so no need to buy it. No slides or online postings, so don't skip! Take his class if you want an easy A and a great professor!
Great professor! Be sure to pay attention and write notes from lectures. His tests are based on lectures and his diagrams!! If you have a hard time hearing, sit towards the front. He's a sweet man and wants you to succeed.
Mr. Agudelo-Silva is the most kind-hearted, inspirational, and dedicated professor. I was anxious about how much material would be covered in BIO110, but he made it a breeze. He is passionate about the subjects he teaches and encourages everyone to learn and to ask questions. If I could take this class every year for the rest of my life, I would.
Fernando is an overall good teacher and is very respected. I had a very hard time understanding him a lot of the time. He doesn't speak the best english and his handwriting was illegible. Sometimes I had no idea what he was saying. He wasn't very understanding, especially when you are absent.
