He is a very good teacher. He makes the class interesting and fun. He encourages participation, but if you don't like speaking in class, you don't have to at all. I enjoyed my time in his class very much.
Wonderful teacher, if you ever need help, he is the one to go to. Sometimes his voice is too soft and soothes you to sleep. But what he has to say is totally worth listening to carefully. Knows what he is talking about and genuinely interested in the students understanding the subject. Sincerely cares about his students.
very nice, very humble. the class is interesting enough and the reading isnt hard. i got an A. would recomend this teacher.
excellent teacher, I would highly recommend him. Truly cares for his students. Life learning lessons outside of course subjects. He encourages student participation but does not enforce it. He also encourages us to form meaningful relationships within the classroom.
Always has a positive attitude. Very Helpful, just the right amount of meaningful homework and interaction with class. This has been my favorite class!
Great guy and he really means well but he puts you to sleep if your not careful. He likes group work and disscussion within the class but to be honest I learned more from the RM's and friends in the class then him. He only did overviews of what our assigned reading was and didnt expand much on anything. The final was stupid and irrelevant.
I really like Brother Castro. The homework just consists of reading a certain amount of chapters and then writing a journal that just has certain points like what you felt as you read and what were some doctrines. I really enjoy his class and he is very interesting. Just show up to class and you'll do just fine!
I really, really liked Bro. Castro. He was so nice, it was a GOOD class, he didn't make you do a bunch of stupid stuff to get an A. It's pretty easy but also not a waste of time to go to class.
Bro Castro is awesome! I took him for D&C as well and he's great. Such a nice and calm guy and really inspires you to learn. Very organized class as well so that is a major plus for those who like that.
Great guy! His classes are so structured so for for of you who like that this is the teacher to take! He's such a sweetheart and really loves what he does. I highly recommend him :)
Brother Castro is extemely nice. I have had him as a Book of Mormon professor two semesters in a row. His lectures are a little dry but the homework load is totally worth it and the final is not intense.
I really enjoyed Castro's class. I learned a lot! There is one journal entry per class period, 3-4 pop quizzes all semester, one 7 page research paper, and a group project at the end of the semester, and there is a take home final. He is from South America so he has a little accent. Overall he is a great professors who gets to know his students.
Brother Castro is the sweetest, most sincere men! He truly believes what he teaches. Sometimes his lectures can be a bit dry, but a lot of the learning comes from your own scripture study. The final was actually pretty tough, but it'll be easy if you've paid attention to what you've been reading all semester. GREAT class!
You will not regret taking Brother Castro's Book of Mormon class. As long as you show up to class and do the daily reading and journals you will be fine. If you put in the time to prepare you will gain a lot out of his lectures.
Great guy! Love Castro. I took New Testament and Book of Mormon from him and got his class done in like a week because I did all my journals ahead of time and just read from there. Awsome guy and cool stories. Diffently an East Coast kids teacher.
Such a great guy! He truly cares about all of his students. All of his lessons are well planned and thought out. The class requires little, but gives a lot if you really invest in it. He is definitely recommended.
Kind of boring.
Br. Castro is one of the harder religion teachers I've had. However, he is a good teacher and provokes your mind. If you become seriously ill throughout the semester he is reluctant to accept late work and work with you on attendance.
He is a really nice guy. You can tell he really cares about his students. His journals are quite easy and helped me focus my daily scripture study. I had a hard time with his accent but other than that he was great.
He is a nice person, but I didn't get too much out of the class. He had good information, but it just didn't engage me. It's an easy class. Watch out for his end of semester morality quiz. He takes off 30 points if you weren't 100% honest to teach a lesson. Wasn't quite appropriate IMO.
He's humble, full of stories, and loves what he teaches--making class all the more enjoyable!
Learned nothing in this class but the spirit is strong. He has such power behind his testimony even though it's a rather humble one. It touched me. I fell asleep in this class more often than not even though you're not supposed to (no idea if he marked me for it). It's just so boring. He's a sweet guy who loves the gospel.
I had a very difficult semester, and rarely attended class. Bro. Castro took me aside and we talked about why I wasn't attending class, and we worked out a way for me to still pass. VERY UNDERSTANDING and CHRISTLIKE professor. I wish I would have gone to class more.
He is very understanding and has some very good insights. He does a lot to try to involve the students in the learning process.
Bro Castro was my favorite teacher by far. He cared more about me as a person than me as his student. He holds his students to standards and expects them to meet those standards. The class is not hard as long as you do all the assignments and show up to class. He doesn't grade harshly as long as he can tell that you tried and you learned something.
BEST PAKISTAN TEACHER EVER. he is helpful, he cared about the students and he is a nice guy. he is not arrogant or "know it all" like other teachers, yet he knows what he is talking about. he is the man. would have him again for sure.
Brother Castro is the best! He truly cares about his students as individuals and is a loving caring guy. He taught with the spirit and I learned so much from him
Brother Castro is an awesome teacher. Only two assignments per week. He does a group project and a paper in the middle of the semester. He takes attendance, so make sure you are there. He has some awesome insights to the Book of Mormon. No electronics are aloud in his class, and he will deduct 25 points if he sees them out. .
Bro Castro is a great guy, but has a tendency to drift off topic. He has great stuff to share, it's just not always relevant. His voice is also really easy to tune out when he's talking, so if you struggle with focusing I'd be careful taking his class. Other than that I really enjoyed Book of Mormon this semester.
Be warned when taking this class- to get an A instead of an A- you need 95% instead of the usual 93%. I got a 94% and it brought my GPA down by 0.05 points.
Great teacher, really cares about the students and the gospel. He does everything he can to help students get the grade they would like, but you do have to do your work and participate. He is a very good teacher, my testimony definitely grew as a result of his example of compassion, humility, and love. Great teacher.
Brother Castro is a really sweet man, but his class is neither academically nor spiritually intensive. Honestly, I'm all about easy classes, but this class is extremely difficult to sit through. If there were moments of overwhelming spirituality it would make up for it, but there isn't. I'd rather a harder teacher for a better pay off.
People think his accent is hard to understand but I hardly notice it anymore. He's spiritual, and has an amazing testimony that he will bear at the drop of a hat. Do NOT have your phone out in class. He may not call you out, but you will lose TWENTY FIVE points out of your final grade if you do. Don't even pull up your scriptures on it. Great Guy!!
I didn't think it was right that we get graded on our testimony and what we believed in. Taking 5 random quizzes and writing 6 pages essay, I thought, was NOT necessary for a religion class. My testimony may have been strengthened, but it made me dislike the teacher a lot, especially when he attendance counts.
Brother Castro is a good man. He recently was released as a mission president so he is super spiritual. His lectures and assignments are super basic. No deep doctrine nonsense. He does a lot of open discussion for his lectures so the students can participate if they want to. He understands that conversion can't be graded so his grading is simple.
He's really a great guy! I loved his class, he can seem a little intense with rules at the beginning but he is a fantastic teacher. He recently returned home from being a mission president, so he's got the teaching with the Spirit thing down. He is one of the most humble and knowledgeable people I've met!
This class was terrible. I will never take a class from him again. His lectures take up the entire class time (and sometimes more) and are EXTREMELY boring. I've literally almost fallen asleep in them. He also grades you on your testimony, which I think is completely wrong and inappropriate.
Brother Castro is a nice guy but he is also the type of guy to call you our in front of the entire class. At the end of the class you are expected to take an integrity quiz, and I failed it because I ate and slept in his class once. He gives a lot of homework for a religion course.
Brother Castro is awesome! Don't listen to what the other people are saying he is a chill guy and does not assign much homework for class at all. Read the NT and show up. One group project and one paper. That was it for the whole semester. It is true his lecture can be lengthy at times, but that's fine by me. What you put in is what you get out.
He's very by the book, live by the letter of the law. His assignments have to be done EXACTLY like he says. He also has some quizzes thrown in, one paper, and you have to do a group presentation. You also have to come to this class otherwise you won't pass. Like I'm not kidding. If you miss more than 5 times you fail. Period.
Boring. Astigmatic. Pontificates without using scriptures.
Brother Castro is the best professor. He likes the assignments specific, but they are simple and easy. The class is an easy A if you just do what you are asked. He is one of the most spiritual and inspiring teachers. He has strong passion for the gospel and sees his students as what they can become! He is amazing and I would highly recommend him.
Bro Castro is fairly easy, he is very humble and is very knowledgeable in the material. His voice is very soft, so it can be hard to stay awake in his class. There is a group assigned halfway thru and you will have a few projects (1 presentation) and an essay to write. It's not terribly difficult.
Sweet guy. Tends to drone on. Pretty easy class, but boring. Not what I expected.
Brother Castro was a great teacher! I liked this class a lot, something I noticed was that we never really went into depth with anything that was taught and I wish we did. He gives you a lot of time to prepare for anything that is due. He's very kind and understanding, as long as you're not rude in class!
Brother Castro is a very nice guy. His work is very easy but do not take out your phone, eat, or sleep in his class. He gives you an integrity quiz at the end of the semester and it may result in 25 points taken off your final grade! Other than that, he is a very good professor!
Very nice and caring teacher, but he is the most boring lecturer ever. The class activities are very stagnant but high pressure and annoying. The course is the real problem, not just the teacher.
I love Brother Castro! He is the sweetest professor I had at BYUI, and he was very passionate and knowledgeable about what he taught. He has a soft voice, so you have to listen pretty carefully to get everything he says, but I would definitely take his class again and thought he was wonderfully genuine.
Bro. Castro is very knowledge; he has travelled to Chile and Cuba himself and has shared a few his experiences with us in class. I've walked out of his class feeling blessed for having him as a teacher; one of the most genuine and respectful that I've had. Reach out to him if you've missed a day; he's willing to work with you. Put in the work!
Nice enough, but poor program set up. He used to be a mission president and a bishop and will judge you like he still is one. I'm male, had longer hair, and he dropped my grade because of it (he thought it was too long for the honor code, none of my other teachers thought so). He is a very harsh grader, so you better not miss the test times.
Brother Castro's religion class was great. He's a very sweet man, and I learned a lot about religion from him. Most of the grading comes from the homework, which is pretty straightforward- it's all open book.
Brother Castro was a sweet heart. I came into class late with a cut on my finger and I thought he was going to cry for me! He even asked if I wanted to go home. He's a little silly, as in he airdropped me a picture of sacred heart Jesus cause I was on my phone in class, but he means well.
Straight up a boring teacher. He will not help you, even if you try to approach him. He sees the students as kids, instead of adults. Get ready to learn everything on your OWN. Do yourself a favor and choose a different teacher.
Worst professor ever!! He does not teach good. His voice is extremely low that you cant hear anything. He is very monotone and boring. He doesnt have the gift for teaching at all. If you miss a pop quiz your Total grade will decrease to an F. He is the worst professor I have. Please! Dont take his class! Youll regret!!!
He is easily the most boring professor I have had my entire life. He rambles most of the class and treats us like children. I am not trying to be mean, but honestly he does not have a clue about teaching. The class was easy because it's a religion class and will be easy regardless. He can also be rude sometimes. Just take this from someone else.
He is a nice person, but as a teacher he is very bad. He does not seem to be very prepared for class. This is the first religion class I feel I don't learn anything about.
He is a good person but a bad professor. He does not seem prepare when he teaches, and you can barely hear him when he talks. He is not horrible but if you really want to learn about things, avoid him at all costs.
Brother Castro simply does not seem to care a lot for teaching. He shows up but he just does not get anywhere with his lectures and I definitely had a super hard time staying alert during his classes.
Bro. Castro is a super nice guy, but I didn't learn much from his class. The structure was sloppy and felt very high school-ish. Once people started giving presentations, most people zoned out and only showed up because they had to (attendance). My expectations for this class was high and I was sadly disappointed.
Brother Castro is a wonderful professor. Yes, he is quiet and perhaps is unable to cover the topics completely, but the Spirit is the real teacher in his class. I appreciated the opportunity to do a team presentation, delve deeper into certain gospel topics, and I appreciated the care he has for his students. I would recommend him!
Brother Castro is a perfect example of a mediocre professor. Half of his classes were given by us, the students, as "team presentations", which seemed just like a poor excuse for having us do his job. The classes he did give were boring, slow and shallow.
He is a returned mission president and can get in depth. His lectures are high quality, yet not terribly in depth, though there are moments. There are reading assignments for every class, 1 research paper, and 1 group project. He tries to not create too much work outside of class.
I admit I sometimes had trouble staying awake in class as it could be a little slow, however if you bring honest questions to class he will go above and beyond to answer them. He's really a cool guy. You really get what you put into his class.
Brother Castro is very nice. His teaching style isn't very engaging but you get out of the class what you put in. If you have a question he is very easy to talk to. He has extra material you can look into if you feel the class isn't as deep as you would like. Make sure to work hard on the group presentation and essay, if you do you'll do well.
Great guy and class is super easy. His lectures are super boring and he doesnt have good insights. I didnt pay attention all semester
Thank God I didn't read the bad reviews. He is such an amazing teacher. I was scared because all the negative things many people told me about comp and how much effort you have to put to pass. However, Mr. Castro was very helpful and funny in class.
Brother Castro is a nice guy, but he is always right because he is the professor. You will get a ton of busy work and feel that you are being graded based on your Gospel knowledge. Speaks in a super monotone voice which makes it hard to pay attention.
I'm taking his class remotely with my roommate and he is very stingy about that. He wouldn't let us be in the same group because he "only makes exceptions for married couples", he doesn't let us share a computer for class, we each have to be on our own computer, he tracks how long you're on zoom, and he thinks his class is the most important class.
This class should be an easy A for anybody. You need to show up once a week for class which is 45 minutes long. Do 2 very small weekly reading assignments , their quizzes, and 1 discussion post a week. They are open note and very very easy. The questions are word for word in the reading. He has you write 1 paper, and 1 group project in the course.
Actually class REL 250C. This is the worst class I've had since I began attending BYUI. He will grade you on assignments based on your testimony. he gives multiple discussion boards a week, only open on one day so it's a mad dash to say something. had us do presentations for the class for 20-30 minutes. This class made me want to leave the church.
I took this class over zoom, so I can't quite speak to Brother Castro's persona in person, but I thoroughly enjoyed his class. His courseload was manageable--even enjoyable--and the text for the course was phenomenal, and the man himself has a certain charm. The daily reading tests were frustrating, though, and his lectures are a bit dry.
Some weeks, there were a lot of videos and documents to read. You will give one presentation to the class, and do weekly discussion boards.
He is really nice but he talks so slow, so quiet, and he sets up his due dates really badly. He is a really sweet good man though. He just kind of put me to sleep.
DO NOT TAKE FROM THIS PROFESSOR He grades super heavy, is a boring lecture teacher, and is unwilling to work with you if you are need extra time or miss a day for a doctors appointment or something. He is boring, he grades SUPER harsh, and will not make any exception in extenuating circumstances. STAY AWAY! (not mean, just not a good professor)
I had more homework in this class than any class for my major. He sets up his due dates terribly and there is no extensions or exceptions for late work. Every absence brings down your grade. He is a very nice guy but he seems to care more about your understanding/ level of knowledge in the gospel than having a good discussion and grades very harsh.
He is a nice man. Boring and slow teacher. He puts you to sleep, I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. He also assigns a ridiculous amount of work for a religion class. Waste of time. He also just lectures the whole time and doesn't get the class to participate.
He always lectures and does lengthy projects. Even if you have an excused absence with the school, he will make you write a two page paper if you miss class to get credit.
He is the worst professor I have had at BYU-I. He uses lectures ONLY. He talks so slowly and quietly and makes me want to be anywhere but in class. Don't take this guy if you want to stay sane. He also assigns way too much homework for a religion course.
He was the sweetest man! Beware, he has a really calming voice so I wouldn't recommend taking a class in the morning or late afternoon from him so you don't fall asleep. He didn't make class as interesting as I would have liked, but he was so nice and caring I feel bad saying bad things about him...
The amount time we spend talking about religious topics is severely broken up by pointless tangents. The homework he assigns is tedious and barely anything is to be learned from it. Reasonable absences and late work is not accepted, if you're late two times to class your grade drops a letter point. Essays and class presentation are not optional.
Steer clear of Bro. Castro for your religious studies! He ranks as the most tedious teacher I've ever encountered, burdening students. I missed a presentation due to a surgery appointment, and rather than showing understanding, he docked my points. For a more positive and enriching religious studies experience, avoid being taught by Bro. Castro.
I don't understand all these bad reviews about Brother Castro. His lectures were truly amazing. I took his class for Jesus Christ and the Everlasting Gospel. He cared deeply about the topics and had sweet connections to each of them. Brother Castro does assign group presentations and assigns work but his expectations are clear and very doable.
Absolutely insane workload. He assigned a group presentation and a paper, both due on the same day. What?? And not only that, but ANOTHER paper is due literally a week later. He seems to think that our whole lives should be dedicated to this class. This is a two credit class, I have more work in this class than my 5 credit math class.
Brother Castro is a nice man, but there is almost no discussion in his classes, mostly just him talking. You come into class and fill out a discussion board. There is no group discussion encouraged, nor does he ask questions. Also late work is never accepted. He's not the worst, there's just definitely better religion professors.
Yes, his lectures are pretty dry, and you will do a lot of reading in the textbook for his class. However, he knows what he is talking about, and you learn a lot from his class. Expectations for assignments are clear, and it's still easy to succeed in this class. If you get your work done on time, all will be well.
He's nice. I met with him once and he clearly cared about me and my success. I didn't love his class, but it was refreshingly normal next to some of my worse classes. His class was a bit boring, but informative, and a bit hard (don't forget to do the readings like I did).
Brother Castro is an amazing teacher. Lots of reading tho. most learning will be self taught through the book but better refined and explained in class. real caring guy with a smile always on his face.
I liked brother Castro. He obviously cares about his student individually, and accounts for the busy times in harder classes easing the workload off at the end of the semester. This semester, the class ended a week early!
Professor Castro is a good professor. He does assign a lot of homework, and a lot of reading. But I can tell he really cared about me-- and that he was really passionate and knowledgeable about what he taught. I felt the Spirit strongly in his class. If you can stay on top of homework and be respectful in class, you'll appreciate his great class!
Brother Castro is an amazing professor, he was so helpful and actually cared how I was doing. There is a lot of reading assignments but for the most part it's pretty light reading. Attendance is pretty important, don't be skipping class if you want a good grade. I definitely recommend taking his class, it's great for getting to know who Jesus is.
I would not recommend this religion class. Very uninspiring and was disappointed by how little we talk of Christ in a class called "Jesus Christ and the Everlasting Gospel". If you're looking for an uplifting and inspiring religion class that has light work, don't take this class. He is a very nice professor, but not a great teacher.
He is a very nice man, but not a good teacher. He is soft-spoken, so it's hard to stay awake during class. He talks a lot. There is an essay in this class and a group presentation. He also kind of grades harshly for the way you dress when presenting. He also makes each discussion post at least 100 words when replying to others.
One of the worst religion professors I have ever had at BYUI. The homework is insane a 4 page paper and a group presentation that is 30 minutes long. Not to mention some of the worst deadlines I have ever had in a class. He always makes quiz deadlines at 7:00 AM.
He's a fun, good guy, but some of his deadlines are awful, 7am? Really? He requires a 4 page essay on a very specific part of Christ and it was lowkey a nightmare. I don't really have a problem with the presentation aspect, but he made us dress up for it and gave a stupid excuse for it. The final quiz makes you write 1600 words.
Super sweet guy! It's easy to fall asleep in his class though, he's very quiet. I learned a lot, but not particularly from him, more so from the readings we did. I had health issues early on in the semester and I couldn't make it to class, which sucked because attendance was mandatory, tho I don't think that's his fault. He worked with me tho!
