Good teacher. class can be kind of boring but he supplies you with really good notes. He's young and new to UCF so he's really relaxed and cool. He has an accent so it might be hard to understand him at time but he's very helpful so just ask him to repeat himself. I took him for summer but there were no pop quizzes. Tests are very hard!
Dr. Rivera is a very relaxed, cool prof. Likes to go off on debates which at times can be boring. Gives you excellent notes (right out of book) which is all you need for the tests. The tests can be tricky, but if you study notes and read chap's you should be fine. Easy class if you put in some effort.
new professor and it shows. notes are straight out of the book. doesn't seem like he knows what he is talking about, just reads powerpoint slides. very boring and hard to understand. did not get anything out of this class.
i didn't pay attention in class..i didn't read at home..went to class late almost every day..and still got a high B....so i guess u can say its easy. Test can be tricky...but im sure if u study u'll do good
professor rivera is a great instructor. his notes are straight to the point and there's no hidden information. the tests are sometimes tricky, but overall, they're pretty easy. i got an A in the class and didn't have to spend much time on it. just read the chapters and you'll do fine.
he's awesome all around!!
Nice prof. who has good sense of humor and teaches straight from the book. His tests are hard, so make sure you READ the chapters! Go to class EVERY time, cuz he gives lots of pop quizzes that have a big impact on your grade. He cuts class short a lot which upsets me cuz I drive an hour to get there! Overall enjoyable though.
I wish the man would talk about sociology instead of how everyone doesn't treat minorities equally.
Rivera is the man. If you engage him he will make a point of getting to know your name. I got a "B" in his class only because i missed one test. Take over the summer. He shows contemporary movies and allows heated debate. take Rivera
this dude is crazy hard, avoid at all costs. His tests are in what might as well be another language because he doesnt know how to write in proper english. I read the chapters and studied the notes like crazy and am barely making a C. Tests are very confusing, and he rarely gives any helpful responses to emails...DONT TAKE HIM!!
He's pretty young, so discussions are contemporary. He likes it whe we have debates and he tries to tie things in with the real world. How many tests have you taken where one of the questions was about the Seinfeld episode you watched n class?
Just study the book before the test and look over the notes and you'll do fine. i only went to half the classes and still got a B. Does have pop quizzes though probably just to see whose attending.
DR. RIVERA IS D-MAN!!! I HAD HIM OVER THE SUMMER. IF U COME TO CLASS AND READ THE BOOK AND NOTES BEFORE THE TEST, YOU WILL DO FINE. HE LIKES TO LET THE CLASS HAVE HEATED DEBATES! HE'S A GREAT GUY, I GOT AN "A" HOLLA BACK!
The man is pretty chill and knows what he's talking about when it comes to sociology but it's really up to you to make the grade.
What ever you do, DO NOT take This guy for sociology!! Yea, he's a nice guy but he stinks as a teacher and needs to learn to speak and write more English or learn it again! His tests are absolutely awful and for a sociology class...they are too hard! A sociology class is supposed to be basic and pretty easy..but not with him!
The class is pretty boring other than when there is debates. The test are pretty confusing you don't really have to show up to class, just borrow the notes. His english is broken. If you really want to learn about sociology don't take this class.Over all not the best class.
AWESOME GUY,LOVES HIS JOB and IT SHOWS! yeah his tests are difficult, I'm not gunna lie but I skated through earning a B. It's a really interesting class, you learn a lot, watch a few movies and he loves when people voice their opinions and debate the topic. I don't have his class anymore but he still says hi! COOLEST guy EVER-TAKE HIM!
This class was sooooo easy! Do not listen to the bad reviews. He was one of the best professors ive ewver had. Got an A+
Class is somewhat difficult as far as tests go. Studying sometimes doesn't even help. Lectures are worthless. He's a really nice guy, just not the best teacher.
This guy is the biggest socialist ever. He treats everyone like a victim, all social classes and minorities are put down and victimized. Tests are easy, lectures are awful. Find another teacher
He's nice, just not the best teacher. His tests are hard and are never what he says they will be so you have to read the book and study the notes a lot to get a good grade. Take a different professor if you can.
Nice guy who enjoys teaching. I easily got a B.
don't go to class... he puts his power points online, and you should read the book also. you have to do a paper and a few assignments that you will always get 100% on. this class really wasn't hard
Great teacher! Interesting material. Easy tests, all material is either in the book or on the slides. Smart guy, take him!
He's really weird. I can't understand half of the stuff he says. He doesn't use proper English either. He makes the same mistakes in his lectures that he does online with his notes. It's cool that he puts his notes online (word for word from in class), but at least use spell check, I mean he's a teacher, he should know how to use English grammar.
hes a funny teacher and the work is not hard at all. hes also willing to offer help if you need it. theres random quizzes usually at the end which are easy if you paid attention in class. yea he has some grammatical erros but he keeps the class interesting so who cares.
What a schmuck. You can't understand half of what he says b/c he doesn't know how to speak enlgish well enough. His random quizzes don't even test your knowledge - they test if you paid attention, which is stupid. And the soc. prob. exer. you have to do is a waste of time. His class was a waste of time. I should've dropped it when I had the chance.
He really doesn't care about his students. Seems a little lazy too, and I don't feel like I've learned a darn thing in this class. Lets us out early almost every time, terrible lectures, but the tests are HARD (essay questions). Don't take, it's a waste of time, and the weekly reading summaries are a pain in the neck.
Great
He's a great teacher. Very EASY class if you study good. He shows lots of interesting videos in class including Seinfeld, The Chapelle Show, 30-days guy (ex. Super-size Me), etc. He's got a lil accent which makes it hard to understand sometimes but not a big problem. His quizes are easy and they HELP you in the test. Great teacher! Take this class!
Very amateur. The notes are pretty much just the vocabulary words from the text. The lectures involve him reading the notes, but very poorly, as he does not speak English well. The Social Problems Exercises were a complete waste of time. The pop quizzes were quite hard, especially the first few. However, the tests are extremely easy.
I liked his class. Gives essay tests that test what you learned, not just what you memorized. Gives reading assignments to help you earn points and gives attendance points. Lets class out early but you learn a lot.
He just reads his notes. THE END. He doesn't speak English very well and sometimes is difficult to understand. I would sleep in class and miss NOTHING. Only thing is, all the quizzes are POP QUIZZES, so if you decided to just not go to class, you could miss a quiz. I wouldn't recomend him.
Easy class, teacher is enthusiastic about the subject. His lectures are enciteful and try to get you to think from a different perspective. He gives quizzes randomly to try to keep you from skipping. Other than that there is no reason to go class if you can absorb through the book and his online notes.
Doesn't give information on what will be on the test but other than that not too hard
This class should have been interesting, but Dr. Rivera made it boring. He really doesn't seem to know his material at all, though he has a PHD. His tests are difficult for such a seemingly easy class. He usually reads straight from his slides (which are not well organized). Choose another professor.
I thought his class was relatively simple, he tried his best to engage the class through crazy methods or humor (ie stealing a skateboard and skating down the aisle) However, he does teach his class mainly through powerpoint presentations and that's 50/50. Tests are easy if you just read through online notes, and skim through chapter summaries.
coolest prof ever
very easy class. teacher is willing to help, and exams are pretty easy. you'll be fine.
Family Trends - books and assignments were very interesting, individual opinions were valued, exams were pretty easy - great class!!!
Really neat info and really cool professor. He's really understanding and willing to help you. Tests can be a little complicated if you don't read.
He is an awesome teacher. This was my first college class and I really enjoyed it! He makes the class fun and occasionally shows video clips.I would recommend taking this class in the summer because there is less work to do than in the Fall or Spring terms.
Prof. Rivera is a very nice teacher. If you are driving long distance, I recommend to NOT take his class because he let class out early almost everyday. I recommend reading every chapter and go over the power points. Also as a hint: make sure you are a pro at theoretical perspectives because every test ask about those.
You have to study! Coming to class and just sitting there doesn't work. Attendance isn't mandatory and he puts the notes online. Come on the days he takes attendance and just read the book and go over the notes on your own; you'll be fine. DO ALL EXTRA CREDIT!!!!! It will boost your grade at least a full letter grade.
He's a good teacher. I recommend it to those that want a good grade. He posted notes online. 5 tests. Easy A.
Good teacher. He is really funny and a good all around teacher. Make sure you study the notes and show up to class because he takes attendance every now and again. I would defiantly choose him again. Class is pretty laid back and not one to really stress over.
Accent is difficult to understand at times. Very very interesting. EXTREMELY nice and genuine. takes attendance 5 times. Dont be discouraged after the first test, IT WILL GET BETTER AND MORE INTERESTING!!! gives 3 EC opps. i would definitely take him again. oh - and read the book! thats all it takes!!!!
Easy class for the most part. 5 test we take online at home (open book/notes), attendance mandatory to get ur 25points,read one article get 25 points, research paper 5-7 pages 100points, also 2 group projects: a debate and written summaries, powerpoint and a 2-3page paper on a movie. Sounds like a lot, but so easy, just do it and get a B or an A
Easy to get an A, but he is boring. Thick hispanic accent. class should be interesting but it's not. A LOT of busy work. debates based on the most ridiculous book. take another teacher if possible. Get on the GTA's good side b/c they grade everything.
Lot of material was covered, but very interesting. Lots of conversation and discussion amongst students (though it could get out of control at times). Overall, Dr. Rivera is very helpful, open, and conducive to learning at the graduate level.
The class is ALOT of work but Dr. Rivera is nice. It's not hard if you do the work. There's a 3 page paper due every week (w/ presentations) and the tests are all essay questions, but he gives them out beforehand. Attendance isn't mandatory but you get credit for it. The material is very boring & only really about depression, but still worth taking
Very funny teacher. His accent takes a little to get used to, but he makes the subject interesting. He posts all the notes online, however checks attendance 5 times the whole course, so you really never know when hes going to check. Tests are easy as long as you study his slide shows and read the book.
Awesome teacher! He makes class so interesting & very fun! Lots of videos & movies shown in class. Tests are easy as long as you look over the notes on the powerpoint (which he posts online!)You don't have to read much, but do the chapter reviews that are on the publishers official website and that will help. Takes attendance 5 times.Great teacher!
Professor Rivera is seriously the nicest guy ever. I got an A in the class but I actually studied. This isn't some BOOM BOOM class where common sense is all you need. You actually need to look at the notes (online) and take the time to study. Overall the class is great and you should def. take him if possible. Not an impossible class.
He was an awesome teacher, funny, sometimes boring, but taking the class all you have to do is study the def of the text, and the 4 diff view points, you will do fine, and he gives extra credit at the end super easy, take him!!!
Really cool/funny guy. Slight spanish accent. Makes the class really enjoyable by talking about current events randomly. Shows a few movies throughout the semester. One quiz online (open book/notes) for every test. Tests are fairly easy; just study and read the notes online. Overall easy class. Fun guy. Enjoyable.
I came onto rate my professor and was slightly discouraged by the comments, and was scared after the first test. Yet as the semester went on it seemed like a breeze. He is a really good professor IMO. I had fun learning the. He shows good videos which was fun to relate to what you learned. KNOW THE PERSPECTIVES. Other than that a breeze! Take him!
I enjoyed this class and agree with the person below, the videos he shows are really good and relate to what you have learned. The class is pretty simple if you study. Overall Mr. Rivera was an effective professor. The class is laid back, but I learned a substantial amount of information in the end.
He is a great teacher and will really try to help you if you have any questions. As long as you show up for class, take notes and do all of the assignments, the class should be an easy A! Highly recommended!
His class was ok. You can't really understand him. Dont need to go to class but takes attendance 5 random times in the middle of class, usually movie days. No curve on the exams. I got a C on all of them. Need to make sure you study not just the facts but putting them into context. Must study a lot. Ended up with a B barely.
Great!!!
Chill guy. He has a hispanic accent but is clear enough. I didn't buy the book because I'm a lazy ass and kept putting it off until I found an earlier edition for 2 dollars at a used book store but I've gotten A's on every test so he is eloquent. Just pay attention. He's funny, poignant, pleasant, and overall a great professor.
Pretty cool teacher. I would definitely recommend him! Just skim through the pages of the book and you shouldnt worry about getting an A. All his tests deal with all these perspectives and his power point slides. Getting an A wasnt hard for me and he's really down to earth with a funny accent! :)
He's pretty cool. He definitely tries his hardest to make sociology fun. The tests are 95% from the online quizzes! THAT IS ALL I STUDIED and i got a B in the class. You should go to class in case he does random attendance. I recommend getting a small group from the class to take the online quizzes. Theyre harder than the tests, so dont panic.
He's a funny professor. To be honest, I regret buying the book. I got a 97 in the class and I should've just studied his lecture notes. I didn't pay much attention in class either, I just read lecture notes. However, it is important to go to class cause he does random attendance.
You can get an easy A in this class. Just look at the lecture powerpoints and read the material. Attendance is mandatory but absolutely pointless. The class is extremely boring.
Interesting subject, but class is kind of boring. He puts his powerpoint lectures online so while attendance is mandatory, you never want to go because all he does is regurgitate what's on the slide. Readings were tedious, but class discussions were interesting. Movies were fun, assignments were easy, essay questions are given before the test.
If you study and read the chapters in the books you will mostly do well. Many times he is not clear on what he wants and is a strict grader, and is not willing to help you understand how to do well in the class.
Rivera is great. You have to read to get a good grade, but what do you expect its school. He is fair in grading and will work with you, he isnt a uptight professor. There is a fair amount of writing involved, but its not too difficult. If you try you will get a decent grade. There is a group presentation btw.
There were 4 tests including the final, which isn't culmative. There are also online quizzes and random attendance which make up ur grade. U def. should read the book to guarantee doing well on the exams. He posts all his ppts online but lecture is quite boring. Try ur best 2 pay attention & u should do well in the class. Movies r shown as well.
Rivera is a good professor. he makes it clear what he wants you to do and gives you clear dates. his accent is not bad at all. READ THE BOOK. it helps alot. ALSO check out the books website! he gets alot of exam questions from the questions on that website! TAKE IT! its pretty easy.
This guy is a jerk. He teaches his opinions and not the facts. Many of these soft science professors need back off their beliefs or keep it to themselves. Rivera has so much power to sculpt young students minds not teach them a bunch of garbage.
He's a good guy. He's very nice and really enjoys what he does. Lectures can go on a bit, but they're worth listening to. I just studied the vocabulary from his slides and made an A in the class, but I did pay attention during lecture. Didn't even buy the book, though. If you get bored, count the number of times he says "out there."
I took him for Mental Illness, he was helpful and very personable!!!!Attendance will make or break you, so be sure to attend class regularly! Test are essay format BUT he will give you the essay questions WAY in advance, and lastly, b sure to participate in class discussions. Its an intereting subjct matter so you should do well in the class.
Easy A! He is really nice and enjoys what he does. He's even funny at times. Gives 4 exams including a non-cumulative final, a few online movie discussions, and 2 extra credit quizzes. He puts his powerpoints online so the book isn't necessary but very helpful to read.
He is a great teacher and an easy A! Four tests, and the final is not cumulative. If you go to class and listen to discussion then you should ace the test. He posts the powerpoints online, so if you don't make it to class, you can still read the powerpoints and get an A on the test. He is a funny guy and passionate about teaching sociology
He is a very good teacher. He is funny and he really wants you to understand the material. Grade consists of four tests, and they are not bad if you study. I would recommend the review I found it helpful. Overall Dr. Rivera a is great teacher. The class is enjoyable and he is an easy guy to listen to. I would recommend him.
EASY A! He is a nice guy. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK, just memorize his powerpoints. Look at the syllabus and show up to class on the days of movies and the days where a chapter is not listed b/c that's when he'll give the extra credit. Also, go on the book's website and do their chapter quizzes b/c he takes questions from there. Good luck!
Very easy class. Lectures are posted online, except for the two sections he wanted to quiz us on. Showed five movies and had us discuss them online for a grade, they were all very interesting and informative. Funny, cool professor. Read the slides a few times before the test and it's an easy A.
not that bad of class. attend the study sessions provided!
Love him! Super funny, lectures can be kind of boring but he tries to keep it interesting. Good discussions, relevent movies, all around an enjoyable class. Study his powerpoints for tests an you're all good.
I enjoy his lectures, he likes to joke, and encourages engagement. The movie choices are great choices. The tests are relatively easy as long as you read the textbook. I recommend it.
You don't have to go to class as long as you're just taking notes that day (but make sure you go the lecture before a test as he will give reviews), movies are interesting, a few extra credit opportunities. Lectures are mildly interesting & he's pretty funny. Take this class!
His class is interesting, he lectures and gives movies that we have discussions online for. Read the book to pass the tests and he gives test review lists before the texts which helps a lot.
You watch so many movies in this class. Then he puts up discussion about them and its easy points.
Online. Quizzes are VERY tricky. He makes you read a LOT of articles. Big project. His TA does all the work and communication. Emails sent to him went unanswered. I am an A student, and this class I worked my butt off and barely made an B+. At the end of the class in his only communication with us, he basically called the entire class fat and lazy.
I never paid attention to his lecture because his accent/lisp got in the way, but attend class or at least know whats going on. HIs quizzes are based on slideshows he'll show in class so make sure you're their for those days. I just read the book and took notes to pass his tests. His tests have specific details that you can only find in the book.
This class isnt that hard. Only consist of a few test and some online discussions of videos he plays in class. All the powerpoints are online so you dont have to really go to class. The test arent too hard, and he gives a review before the test. I got a C, but I didn't work that hard. I would recommend this class though.
I thought by now I wouldn't let the test questions trick me, yet they still do and everytime I think I get a 100 I don't even get a B.. tricky questions and extensive articles..
He's a really hard grader and made the class feel way harder than it needed to be. Nice guy though and he's clearly passionate about what he's teaching. Just don't go into his class expecting an A because it probably wont happen.
Really funny guy. Passionate about Sociology. Seems to really care about his students. Makes class fun. Wasn't too hard of a class. A few tests and he gives reviews for each one. Discussion postings about videos you watch in class are graded tough. Take him!
Professor Rivera is very easy-going and always willing to answer students' questions; even if they barely pertain to the topic. I found his grading scale to be very easy. Do the assignments on time and pay attention in class and you'll do great. Take him!
Easy class if you apply yourself a bit. Couldve done better if I hadnt missed some online assignments. Easy going teacher, tries to make lectures interesting. Few videos in class as well that arent half bad. Would def. recommend.
Easy online course if you apply yourself: Assignments weekly are reading about 80 pages, doing a timed test, and reading a case study (found online) and summarizing / providing evidence for the claims in it. Keep in mind due date (online, Fri. 9pm!) and time, and you will be fine!
This class was a breeze. There are 3 exams, a final, and 10 video assignments that are easy and most movies are usually on Netflix. He'll tell you what to study for the test the class before the test, so don't miss that class. Power points are online so class isn't mandatory. You do need the book if you want to get an A on test. I recommend him
This was an interesting class! Participation is not mandatory, although he sometimes rewards students who attend class with extra credit. There are a lot of video assignments which are easy to get good grades on, and you can often find the videos online. Study for the tests because they tend to be on specific information discussed in class.
Professor Rivera is an awesome guy. He makes lectures interesting. There are 10 video assignments that are easy to get full credit on if you follow the simple rubric. I recommend getting the book because there are specific questions on the test only found in the reading. He gives reviews before each test which is helpful. I would take him again!
Rivera is really the ideal professor. He is friendly, helpful, and often hilarious. He definitely does a good job of making class interesting. Course grading consists of papers based on documentaries shown in class and exams based on lectures. You can get by without the book, but it will definitely help if you want an A. Go to class! It's fun.
Easy class. He's funny & likes to take "breaks" in the middle of class. Spent most of the semester watching movies and writing summaries about them. You'll know what's on the tests because he puts up a slide of what to know in class. Just make sure to look in the book because he'll pull concepts from there
I thought he was boring. others laughed at his jokes. but go to class listen to his lecture take notes. or skip class and take the notes when he uploads it online. 3 tests and a final. gives study guides. video assignments. watch video in class write a 2 paragraph summary submit online. text book helps !!
Took him for Honors Medical Sociology. Four tests, a TED Talk presentation, one paper, and 5 online discussion points. Lectures were interesting and supplemented with video documentaries. He posted his powerpoints online, which was a big help. Read the book for the tests, study what he posts will be on the tests.
All he does is read off power points and makes you watch pointless videos
He was a great professor, honestly I loved how he taught and I would take his class again if I could. Make sure you read the book inside out and literally listen to what he tells you to do and you should pass the class. Take this class serious because if you slack off it'll show when you take the tests.
Don't take it with him tough and unreasonable grader. Prepare to read a lot discussion is required and not easy u have sound like perfect hard to please the teacher never good enough
6 week course with 5 short essays from watching videos, 4 tests, 2 pre/post engagement assignments. Questions on the tests are in order in the chapters, but read the wording carefully. Quick Grader! No discussions!
He is amazing I recomend to all students who go to ucf best teacher i ever had.
HE IS AWSOME!!!!!
Very good teacher.
