Bad professor. Tests are extremely hard and he is very unclear
tests are very hard and lectures are painful. He goes through notes very fast but sometimes puts them on blackboard. It doesnt really help that he can barely speak english. Although his class is ridiculously hard, if you go to him for help he is very gracious. Nice guy, just needs to work on doing his job a little better.
one word. hard.
hard to understand at first but otherwise good. tests are difficult but come straight from the book. very helpful if you go talk to him. nice guy.
Dr.Tenjo is a great professor, his tests aren't to hard but he lectures quickly and power points gives very little information His English isn't also the best. If you have any questions he is very approachable and happy to help. Read the book if you want to get an A.
Read the book. Go to class. Do the homework. Take EVERY quiz. Go to office hours. Get an A. That was my formula and it worked. People that couldn't pass the class blamed the teacher but some people are just not ready for college. Fairly easy when I took the time to apply myself. Homework and extra credit are a key to a solid A.
Dr. Tenjo is AWESOME. He genuinely cares about his students, and is more than willing to help if you seek him out.... often he will seek you out if he sees you on campus, always asking for feedback from students. He truly wants students to succeed. His tests can be tricky, but pay close attention and don't breeze through them. Dr. Tenjo RULES! =]
Dr. Tenjo is a fabulous professor! It is a valuable asset to VCU's Biology Department. I thoroughly enjoyed his cell biology class! He is always available to answer any questions students may have! Dr. Tenjo is the best!
Read the book and you will get at least a B
Sometimes difficult to follow. Just need to read book but go to class for clicker questions. Did not pay attention in class... made a B.
Super easy tests/quizzes - multiple choice only. Great guy, cares about you. Go to class for clicker questions, write them down because they are the test/quiz questions.
He was GREAT! Dr. Tenjo really cares about his students! His accent can be hard to follow at times, but he was always willing to help whenever you were unclear on something. I would definitley recommend taking him for anything he teaches!
Dr. Tenjo is a very nice man, but his lectures are very dull. He also tests on a lot of material from the book which is not covered in class. As long as you study from the book, you can easily get an A, it just seems like the time spent going to class just for clickers would be better spent reading the book at home.
Dr. Tenjo's lectures confused me more than they helped me. Also, the turnaround on grading is pretty darn long. It's hard to know how hard to study for a test when you're still waiting on the grade for two quizzes and the last test. Also, he promised to calculate our current grades before the final, but didn't.
Dr. Tenjo is a very caring professor. Genetics is a challenging course, and is the student's responsibility to also put in the work to understand the fundamentals - not only the teacher. Study the book, come to class, pay attention, and work the problems. There's your A. Dr. Tenjo did his part very well. He doesn't GIVE A's, you have to earn it
He knows the material. but to articulately communicate his points is a bit of a challange
Dr. Tenjo is not very helpful. When questions are asked in class he often has an attitude and does not answer them. He is obsessed with attendance. He is also obsessed with monitoring what people are doing on their laptops in class. If you do the extra credit quizzes and get decent grades on the tests you can get an A.
He is hard to understand because he has an accent. But otherwise his tests are easy because they come straight from the online website he gives you that comes with the textbook. And not just that the extra credit is the online quizzes and they are easy and are pretty much the same questions as the test. Just study the textbook review and your good.
Dr.Tenjo is a good professor, but you must put in the effort as well. Study the textbook, go to class for cliker points, and go to SI sessions, and you will have atleast a B. Thats what I have in his class. Try to have him not at 8 AM
he literally has to be the orst teacher i have ever had. having him the first semester of my freshman year had to be the worst experience to date at vcu! he is very useless and his attitude is rank!!
Dr. Tenjo is amazing. His class is pretty easy and an A is definitely possible. I have a B in the class and I don't study until the night before. He gives a lot of extra credit but has CPS so attendance is mandatory. His tests are very detailed and most of the material comes from the book so if you don't read the book then you can't pass.
Boring as crap, but an easy A. If you do the extra credit quizzes, he uses questions from those as test questions
Dr. Tenjo was a good professor and he offers students many oppertunities to bring up their grade. His accent can be a little hard to understand but he definitely knows his stuff. Very great person and if you care about the class and your grade, he will care about it as well.
This course is relatively easy as long as you STUDY, do the extra credit assignments, and go to class for to get your CPS and attendance point! Make sure you stay on him about your grade though!
Dr. Tenjo is such an amazing professor! He cares about his students and is extremely helpful if you ask him for help. Read the book thoroughly (use powerpoints as a guideline), go to class for his CPS attendance points, do the extra credit assignments, and you'll be fine. He also curves the exam grades and is big on written answers.
He is a good teacher who will help his students. work and study hard and you will get an A or B.
GREAT JOB TENJO
he is so funny. he is willing to help if you just talk to him. very approachable. not arrogant or conceded like some teachers. easiest bio teacher in all subjects
Great teacher and easy to talk to. Show up to class, study and do the extra credit and you'll be fine. Also make sure you don't talk in class, that drives him crazy, but he has a great sense of humor and cares about his students.
A wonderful professor. This is my second semester in a row, and he is typically fun, his lectures are good, and he is very helpful. GREAT for MCAT practice. CAUTION! Dont treat his class like it is not a priority to you...he wnats his class to be the most important you take!
He is the nicest Professor you will ever me if you treat him with respect. He is always there for you if you need him even though he is busy. He is understanding and will do his best to make you learn and get the grade you want. Seriously if you need a Genetics class then take it with him! Thank you Dr. Tenjo for everything!
He's very easy. You MUST study for the quizzes. The quizzes are so much harder than the tests. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and if you show up to class every day he gives you more extra credit. He is sometimes approachable, but it varies. He will also remember your name and call you out during class!
If u are reading these other people's ratings, saying hes all easy and stuff. Don't believe all of them, sometimes he is nice, other times he will straight up yell at you for no reason. He has these random mood swings. And if there are problems at home, he will take them out on the students. Sure he offers Extracredis, but he makes the tests HARDER
He's a great teacher, however, his tests and quizzes are so hard. You better prepare to study or else you won't pass. I don't know where he got his tests questions from. Materials not in the book
His English needs a little perfecting, because he likes to say 'asteroids' instead of 'steroids.' His glasses make him look like a cute little turtle.
uhg- try to avoid! Tests don't make a ton of sense, there are a ton of typo's on them (which may totally throw you off and there's practically no partial credit.) He has mood swings, doesn't return things on time, and the grading is questionable.
This guy knows his stuff; his accent is hard to understand at times, but he shoots straight from extremely informative power points. Read the book too! YOU MUST STUDY ANYALYTICALLY; do not just memorize!! His tests are VERY challenging! But you CAN get an A if you try! He gives a lot of extra credit b/c quite a few fail his class.
Awesome
Dr T tries hard but a language barrier exists. Exams are challenging and reading the text is the key to success. Insane grade curves, but don't rely on them. Very interesting material that everyone should know. Recommended.
4 Tests total, not including final. most have typos. His accent is thick. However, this class is much like any other Biol class. He doesn't skimp on detail. You must study hard and thoroughly for exams. Nothing on the tests is unexpected. He gives LOTS of extra cred. so go to class to know when, it'll pay off. CPS in almost all lectures.
ONE OF THE BEST TEACHERS I HAVE EVER HAD! His lectures are great although his accent is quite heavy. All of his assignments were related and attendance is important since he does clickers all the time! Exams are worded in a difficult way but most of the material comes off his slides. His si leaders are helpful but grades take a while to come back!
Great professor!! Nice guy!! Tests are extremely hard straight from the book. STUDY! Do the extra credits, do good on the quizzes attend every lecture for CPS points and there is your B. Take good notes because the quizzes are straight from his slides. Gotta work hard for that A though.
Gives you everything you need to know on his slides. Just read in the book where the slides match up and you should do well. I'd recommend going to SI, too, because some of his test questions make you think. Gives 5 tests, but only counts 4 - definitely a plus.
First of all if you don't have to take bio, dont. and if you do DONT take it with tenjo. you can't understand anything he is saying. he doesnt stick to the syllbus dates, you wont know where u stand grade wise until the end of the semester because he doesnt give grades back.his tests are nothing like the slides or text book. just dont take it
I had Tenjo for both 310 and 218 and for the most part, his "if you have an A you dont have to take the final" is pretty freaking sweet. However, for 218 you definitely have to read the slides / book carefully to do well on the tests, cause they are pretty dififcult. He's kinda bleh in class, but helpful individually. Lectures are boring...
Tenjo is incredibly nice. The only time he has his "mood swings" is when he finds out people are sending their clickers to class with other students. I don't particularly like his lectures, but he is good to talk to during office hours. Read the book and go to SI sessions (Patrick is awesome) and you'll be fine.
He is def. helpful if you go talk to him. His exams are basically like his homework/classwork. Many people have a hard time understanding him, but I thought his explanatios were fines. He posts his powerpoints, gives extra credit, drops your lowest exam.
Tenjo is a great teacher, his slides are helpful and he gives plenty of extra credit. His tests are pretty tough and he expects you to understand the material not just regurgitate it but it's all straight from the notes/book. He WILL bust cheaters in front of everyone and expects you to pay attention in class. Also has a thick accent. cool dude.
this class is very easy...a lot of people in this class think it's hard but they only think that because they never come to class or talk/sleep through it. he's very helpful if you help yourself.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Dr. Tenjo. He's an awesome guy. I had him for Bio 101 and passed with flying colors. He gives plenty of extra credit and I thought his tests were very easy (got A's on all of them). Just go to class, pay attention to the clicker questions, and go over his powerpoints (which he puts up on BB) before the test and you will be fine.
Great Teacher, his exams are not easy but he offers tons of extra credit. Just show up to class, pay attention and take notes. He will call out people who are talking with their friends or using their laptops for things other than taking notes.
He is very nice! all tests come from lectures and powerpoints so attend class
It's kinda hard to understand what he says and hes very fast paced but overall a good teacher. If you go to his office he is extremely helpful and actually tries to get to know you, which i think is rare in a teacher! He loves to call on random people so dont give your clicker to someone else so you can get attendance points or he will turn you in
I liked Dr Tenjo for 218, but he might as well not be involved with capstone because he does not lecture, make exams, or grade anything. It's all delegated to the TAs, who may or may not always understand the answers themselves.
Many of the ppt slides in this class have misspelled words and vague descriptions of the need to know information. Dr. Tenjo flies through lecture, but never really seems to teach anything. I think he is intelligent, but can't relay concepts well in a lecture setting.
I never got used to his accent so def print off the slides and bring them to class so you have some idea of what he's talking about. High textbook use. Def come to class b/c clicker attendance is part of your grade. Tests are very straightforward. Plus if you have an A before the final you don't have to take it, which is beyond helpful. Take him.
Are you kidding me? Prof Tenjo was da bomb!!! Awesome teacher, loved covering material. Got irritated when unserious students talk during lecture. Actually expected you to read the material. Very fair exam, everything on the exam was taken verbatim from the note and text book. Expected students to actually study the textbook.
I never could understand what he was saying and had to read the book to make-up for lecture a lot. He tests are difficult and so are the quizzes and clicker questions. I may have done better if I could understand him. He speaks way to fast.
Cell bio with Tenjo was a pain I hated the class. Tests were difficult. You have to read the text book to do good on them. Attendance was mandatory and clickers were used. Tenjo is a really good professor tho he just makes you work hard for a good grade
Everyone complains about his accent however he is usually talking directly about the slides so I don't know why people have so much trouble if they actually pay attention. Grading was very fair he give's partial credit and exam's are a little challenging but they can be done. Read the slides and the book!! He is also very available for help 1on1.
I see a lot of comments saying how bad he was, but I had him this past summer and he means well. Yes he's a bit hard to understand, but he knows his stuff and he honestly wants you to understand it, and if you don't speak up then it's your fault you didn't. He really tries to help people understand the material.
His class was very interesting. The tests were not really that hard, just a little tricky but it wasn't anything impossible. He really cares about his students learning the subject and if you show that you are committed to his class he will remember you and is more willing to help you out with catching up with work or giving some extra credit.
Professor Tenjo's exams are very confusing! His "Spanglish" makes it hard to understand his talking and typos on exams and powerpoints are very annoying! He tries to twist questions around on quizzes and exams to trick you! Attendance is mandatory because he will call on you aloud in class from a pool of randomly selected names! Pretty embarassing
Took 2 classes Cell bio and genetics. I hated cell bio with him. There was alot of reading, hard tests and annoying clickers. Then I took genetics with him and i absolutely loved it! He was extremely helpful and genuinely wants his students to master and understand the material. So i would def recommend him if you are taking genetics.
Good teacher, very helpful. I would take him again.
Not the best. :( He has an accent that is bearable for most, and he seems to be a genuinely caring teacher. He will learn your name, and offer extra help any way he can. BUT his class is difficult. He has typos in everything, slides, exams etc. His exams are basically all trick questions! SO TRICKY. Free Response tests, you better know everything!
Really stand up guy. Cares about his students and tries to fit in humor in his lecture as much as possible. He will make an effort to learn everybody's name! I wish more VCU professors were like him. Tests are hard, i mean its a 300 level class. All short answer but he tries to give you as much preparation for them as possible.
Professor Tenjo is the best teacher I ever had. His class is very interesting and his classwork will help you understand the material. I would take another class with him
I took Dr. Tenjo during the summer. He is a good professor, a little bit hard to understand because of his accent but you will get used to it. All of his classworks are exactly what the test will be like, so as long as you study those you will do well. Overall a very interesting class and I am glad I took it with him.
Incredibly difficult for this Parasitology class. He asks a lot from his students, slideshows are confusing, and gives too much information for one exam with no true vision of what is needed to be known for each exam. My least favorite class since being in college. (recommend taking immunology before this class if you're still interested)
If you are not a student who understands everything and speaks up during class, he tends to look down on you. He has been very condescending towards students and their questions while in class. Does not like to be corrected on his exams even if he is wrong. Incorrect grammar and spelling makes deciphering his lectures a pain. I do not recommend him
took this class because I thought what an interesting subject, nope! I Regret taking this class. His lectures consist of him basically reading the power points he had just finished a few minute before class & then post them late on BB. Exams were hard where if you didn't know every detail you didn't know the answer, do not take this class!
Dr. Tenjo is really nice and you can tell that he means well and wants you to learn, but this is not the class to take if you are taking Organic Chemistry at the same time. You need to devote lots of time to the power points and if you're in Organic Chemistry II studying for the ACS at the same time, you will be miserable.
not that hard and does not expect that much for a 400 level class and he gives a lot of extra points on the test. slides are the bare minimum he does have a thick accent. but I took orgo 2 same time , barely studied got an A. just go to class and pay attention. you dont need imunology you ony need bio151 seriously,
Dr. Tenjo is a really nice person. He can be a little difficult to understand but if you pay attention, its not that bad. What you dont want to do is show up unprepared. He wants you to ask questions about the readings. The material tends to be more difficult the longer its been since you took cell bio.
I took this course in summer. His accent was hard to understand which bothered me so much, he even made typos and grammatical errors on exams.... the group work/hw assigned during the lecture were annoyng at times. In addition the preceptor for this class wasn't useful at all. Horrible...
Tenjo is a great guy. His classes are really tough so don't expect an easy A but he's the kind of guy you could go to 2 years after taking his class with a question from another class and he'll sit you down and walk you through everything. Tests are short answer. Material is difficult. He's super helpful and extremely approachable. He's a 10/10.
Taking genetics over the summer was fun with Tenjo. Most quizzes and exams are all free response, which may be terrifying at first, but at the end of the day, it all works out because of partial credit! Focus on the practice problem packets he gives and you should be fine. Not much emphasis on the textbook, unlike other professors. It was great!
If you're organized, meticulous, and have a solid background in math, you'll do great. I showed up, did the classwork and homework, barely studied (literally an hour before each exam) and easily got an A. Exams and quizzes are free response, but almost exactly like the classwork. Go to class and pay attention!
Super nice and helpful guy! If you're lost, just let him know. Stay late a few days, go to office hours - your grade will show for it.
His accent is really not that thick, he is super easy to understanding I have no idea what people are talking about when they can not understand him. He is a genius and a great teacher, but sometimes not the most organized. You need to do a lot of independent studying for his class, felt like I learned a lot.
Lots of group assignments, you cannot rely on the powerpoints, must know every single detail in the book, a hard accent to understand, and all the exams are cumulative which is very frustrating.
I took Honors cell bio and genetics over the summer. Dr. Tenjo is AWESOME. He is passionate about biology, and cares about his students. He makes sure that everyone learns, and willing to slow down material. Biology naturally has a lot of material, so you have to study! He is disorganized though and doesn't know his deadlines.
Cell & molecular Lab: I love Tenjo. He wants you to know what you are doing. I was able to talk to him after class or over email when I was unsure of things. This class was hard, but I learned so much. You learn valuable techniques to use in a research lab. Overall, extremely difficult but worth it in the end. Projects, quizzes, papers, labs...
Dr. Tenjo was a great professor who cared more about his students learning the material thoroughly than just getting through all of the material. All of his quizzes and exams were written response only, which initially made me nervous in the beginning but if you practice his classwork problems the written response questions will be easy.
Tenjo is an angel. Suuuper nice guy. Class can be difficult if you just try to memorize problems and not the concepts behind them (make sure you understand meiosis VERY early on). Just don't get behind and the class is easy, tests are based on classwork. A little hard to understand but you get used to it. I ended with over a 100.
Tests are very critical thinking, and practical applications of what is taught in class. Takes a few weeks to understand what information he wants you to know.
Gave enough assignments to due well. There were quizzes and exams along with ungraded assignments in class. Those assignments were very helpful and usually similar problems would be found on the exam. Also he gave practice exams. He was awesome
Dr. Tenjo is an amazing professor who really cares about his students, and is willing to work with them. The class was 3 exams, 5 quizzes, a presentation, and miscellaneous classwork. Put effort into the class and you will see results, he truly wants students to learn. Very highly recommend.
Hes amazing! One of the best professors ive had! He is clear, he is fair, his lectures are well sorted. His exams have some free response but hes grading style is fair and gives partial credit. He also had some extra credit questions on the exam which is my favorite kind of extra credit! Also, there are hw and quizzes to help your grade.
Quizzes and tests are mainly based on the key concepts he highlights during lectures, and focus more on critical thinking than plain memorization. The concepts he highlights will give you a better understanding of biology. The accent is a bit heavy, but understandable for the most part. He curves all assessments by a few points on a flat curve.
Literally easiest bio class you'll ever take. don't need the textbook imo, attending class is enough but it is mandatory because there is graded classwork. Didn't take time to study for it outside class! Very easy and Dr. Tenjo is super friendly!!! Eaaasssyyyy A
Professor Tenjo was one of the nicest professors I've ever had, he answered emails quickly and was super helpful with any questions I had. If you take notes to the best of your ability during lectures and do the practice material online, you will have a perfect understanding of the content. He is such a sweet guy and really wants you to succeed.
Tenjo was alright. He reads off the ppts and gets a frustrated when students ask questions. He gives out extra points on assessments and are usually similar to the classwork. He is just a little unenthusiastic about the material.
He usually only teaches honors, and the best way to learn the material is to ask as many questions as you can to engage with the material. Sometimes his lectures aren't clear and you need to ask clarifying questions which can annoy him. Quizzes got increasingly harder (eek), but exams were moderate in difficulty. Quiz 1 was also hard FYI. No HW.
Tenjo is the best professor for Biology at VCU hands down. Despite struggling in Virology, he made the subject so fun to learn and honestly this was the best professor and the most caring one I took at VCU. Just listen to his lectures and pay attention to get an A in this class.
I would never take him again. He knows what he is talking about but is a terrible teacher. Taking Merk would have been a lot better because she knows how to teach. Its like based on his mood he would make things harder. He made everything harder because he is struggling to get a promotion so his stress is taking it out on his students. Demote him!!
He was completely fair with his workload and criteria for grading. I never had to study outside of the class as long as I paid attention to the lectures. The assessments were completely fair with their material and structure, plus extra credit opportunities. Never really had to use the textbook that was provided.
It is easy to do well if you put in the work, and this can honestly be said about any class. Dr. Tenjo is a great professor with your best interests at heart, so the way to do well is to give him the same respect he gives you and put in your best efforts towards the class.
He is a really great guy but you never really know what he is going to grade you on. He almost seems to choose at random what is worth being tested on and doesn't give many hints about it. Its much better to just read the optional textbook than to attend his lectures.
Tenjo is an engaging professor who encourages understanding over memorization. Though his accent can be tricky, his classes are well-structured with helpful assignments. unstuckstudy and the free textbook were great study aids for this course.
I loved taking Professor Tenjo! He is so interactive in classes and makes the content fun! The class is set up easily, and the quizzes are online, open-note. He does a final project instead of a final exam, which is a plus! I definitely recommend his class!
Dr. Tenjo truly cares about his students and always tries to make his classes entertaining! His grading criteria is fairly easy as well. Just attend lectures, and you'll do just fine!
Perhaps the most memorable professor I've ever had. He's very kind and easygoing, and he's passionate about what he teaches. My only advice is to be strict when it comes to taking notes for lab + taking pictures, those will help you later. I also highly advise against taking days off willy-nilly.
