Filix's lecture are incredibly entertaining and exciting. His lecture will keep you on your toe. Great guy and very helpful in office hour. His test and quizzes are directly from the HW question from the textbook.
Math is definitely not my favorite/strongest subject, but Filix is charismatic and makes it enjoyable. He lectures fast, but welcomes questions during class and is extremely helpful during office hours as well. The tests are fair if you are willing to put the time/work into studying. Loved the class, highly recommended!
super charismatic, enthusiatstic about life in general, loves math, recognizes hard work, as well as slackers. class structure is relaxed but still focused.
Great Teacher.
I found the class to be incredibly difficult but I attended every lecture and did well on labs and was able to earn a solid A. It is a lot of material so I would suggest taking notes, he also rewards improvement in exams. If you get an C on the quiz, B on the midterm, and A on the final he recognizes that.
Professor Maisch is a great professor. I never had to look at the textbook because he taught so well in class. He's also really helpful if you go to his office hours. I actually learned to like math because he made it clear in its applications in daily life. He's a really great professor for math and a fantastic person in general.
Goes fast, but he encourages participation and displays a lot of enthusiasm...good teacher, overall.
He is a good professor. You will learn what you need to know. He does tend to go fast when he gets into it. He sometime will skip steps but he will always make sure the class understands. Very fair midterm.
Best professor at OSU...hands down.
Filix is a great professor. He certainly is the best calculus teacher I have ever had and his passion for math is untouchable. If you enjoy an upbeat math course filix is the guy. The material is tough but no complaints here.
Felix is a breath of fresh air for Oregon State's notoriously terrible math program. He's a great teacher but gives an EXTREMELY difficult final. Whether or not he curves it is still pending. Plus he kind of looks like Charlie Sheen. Take this professor but expect to be rocked on the final!
Great teacher
Clarity, Clarity, Clarity. I personally have taken this class twice and may I just say Felix is very good at teaching theory and manages to make it actually enjoyable. The final was tough but midterm wasn't too bad.
Take him for any math class. Don't sit too close because he is a bit loud. He moves around alot and has loads of energy. Great friendly guy. Helpful.
He's really perfect instructor. He almost explain every thing you need to get at least B. His first midterm was super easy but the final was really hard( he gives a goood carve).
This professor knows Math. I took him for math 254. He made midterm easy but final hard. But If you have the chance to take it with him do so! He's clear about the topics he's lecturing and willing to answer question!
By far the best math professor I've had. He keeps the class engaged and moves along at a decent pace, but is more than willing to answer questions and go over concepts again. Very friendly and enthusiastic. He somehow managed to make calc my favorite class of the term.
Great teacher. He really cares about the subject he teaches. He wants you to learn and is always down to help you out just about anytime. Get him if you can.
Sped through lectures and talked really fast. Final test was the hardest test I have ever taken in my life. I love math and it has always come easy to me. But when I took this class it was a huge challenge, which isn't a bad thing but I expected to understand it after taking the class in high school. to be simply pt I don't know how I passed w a B.
I really liked the way he taught. He really wants you to understand what you are doing rather than just to memorize techniques. He does tend to go fast, but if you have questions his office hours are really great! He loves what he teaches and is enthusiastic, which helps a great deal, especially compared to other teachers I have had!
he is a great teacher, who loves most of his students. I felt like he honestly wanted me to learn the math. and he is always happy answer any question there is.
Great professor overall. Lectures are really fast-paced, but gives you all the info (and more) you need to do well on tests. Extremely helpful and kind-natured. Definetely recommend going to office hours in order to pass class.
Get ready for pop quizzes! Tests are really hard-- harder problems on tests than homework.
His lectures go pretty fast so make sure you ask questions if you are having trouble keeping up. He expects that you have a really good handle on your trig and algebra, so make sure you are competent in those areas. When he gives you practice problems from the book, definitely DO THOSE to prep for the tests. That was the best way I found to study.
If you want a professor that challenges your high academic standards, this is your guy. He's a great professor that understands math as well as understanding a students success. The tests are very tricky and hard but it's on everything that he covers in class or his practice problems! I highly recommend him!
Would ignore the fact that students were lost, was not a nice or friendly person to be around, generally had a major distaste for any students.
He is a GREAT teacher. He actually made made me look forward to going to class! His notes were awesome and his tests were straightforward. I would take him for the next class if I could...
Keeping up in his class was extremely difficult. He showed absolutely no interest in whether the rest of the class got the materials or not, and he sped through the sections faster than any of the other professors did, which made studying with friends impossible. I highly suggest finding another math professor.
If you can, take him for this class. He is full of energy and makes the class fun. I have already taken this class, and I can honestly say Felix is much better at explanations than my previous teacher. I think I finally understand induction! Although I struggle with this material, his teaching makes me want to put forward the effort to do well.
Talks way too fast. Thinks highly of himself. Talks down to students.
He is nice
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM FILIX UNLESS YOU ARE VERY GOOD WITH MATH!!! He speeds through notes, doesn't care if people are lost or don't get it, and he is not a very approachable instructor. He likes to boast about how natural math comes to him. Also flat out tells his students he doesn't like teaching 100 & 200 level classes.
This is my favorite math professor ever and his grading curve is very fair. I have now taken 2 math classes in a row with him and I hope to be lucky enough to continue taking his classes as I progress through the math courses required for my major.
Yes, he talks fast. He talks fast so he can cover as much material as possible. He provides many examples in class. I'm taking every possible Math class I can from him. He is approachable, but has a air of unapproachability. Once you ask questions, you'll find he is very nice and helpful. He loves Math, plain and simple.
Teaches quickly, lots of examples that are incredibly concise, well organized, very easy to follow. Incredibly fair curve, better than I've ever seen before.
Seriously one of the hardest math professor I've ever taken at OSU. He talks way way too fast and expects you to understand what he is talking about. I do NOT recommend him to anyone who is not strong in math. DO NOT TAKE HIM if you want your GPA to drop. Hands down one of the WORST professors I've ever taken! AVOID HIM AT ALL COST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely a hard professor- goes fast in class. He obviously loves what he teaches, but gets frustrated when students take longer to understand a concept. Luckily he gives online homework, as well as in class and recitation quizzes that can easily help boost your grade. Test averages were usually in the 50-60 range.
I really enjoyed the way he teaches. He really loves math and isn't foreign so you can understand him. He is a good professor to choose if you have some background in the subject. He does move somewhat quickly but I didn't feel it was too bad. Difficult final. Attend lectures as much as possible. I wish I could take him again for 252.
Filix is brilliant, clear, and straightforward . He is however, very tough. As someone who had already taken this course in HS i expected it to be a breeze. IT WAS NOT. He writes his notes very quickly and does not use blackboard by any means (not even grades). I am smart and worked very hard in his class and still got a B. Great teacher, tough!
He seems enthusiast during lecture. However, really loves when students suffering with grades. Test will not be the same with review questions. Unless you go to his office hour, dont expect any help will be given to you from him (he said he's too lazy to post review solution and hw)
He is very condescending, if you don't understand the material the first time he doesn't like to review it so students can understand. He might be enthusiastic but it causes him to teach to fast. You will resort to teaching yourself most of the material. DO NOT get him unless you absolutely love math and have a clear understanding.
There is a lot of material covered in this course and Filix goes through it very fast, which would be fine if he didn't enjoy confusing students. If students ask for further explanation on a topic he becomes very condescending and states that such and such is a prerequisite for math 254. Be prepared to teach all the material to yourself.
He's smart in math but fast. you need to keep up with him
filix was one of the worst math professors I've had at OSU. the tests were nothing like the review problemlecture examples. the test questions were ambiguous and required a lot of intuition.
Very tough class. Clearly passionate about math but doesn't realize most students aren't as smart as he is. Goes through content very fast. That being said I failed both midterms and still managed to pull a C in the class so he must curve a lot in the end.
Filix is a great teacher, but his tests are tough because the course is tough. Most people complaining here got bad grades because they don't have a strong math skills. Hence, MTH254 has A LOT of material, and we have to go through it quick. He is pretty fair and curves his class heavily. All the recitation quizzes are straight out from the book.
Filix is a very fast teacher. Be prepared to take sloppy notes, and several pages of them. His examples are not the best and his handwriting is at times unreadable. The subject is fascinating and Filix definitely believes that. However, he is super enthusiastic and passionate about math. I just wish he was a better resource for learning.
Filix seems to enjoy gloating his abilities in front of his lectures while ignoring the fact that we are there to learn. He is not helpful and does not teach the material he is so passionate about very well at all. He has to curve the entire class to keep the majority of his students from failing.
I have no clue what some of these other people are talking about. Suck it up babies, this is college! If you are a lazy student then his class will destroy you, but if you really are interested in learning it can't really get better than Filix. His teaching is enthusiastic and clear. I plan to take more classes with him (this is my second).
For those who said students are lazy, I spent a lot of time preparing for the midterms and studying extra hours for this course and still got C. Yes he is smart at math but not all the students have the same skills for math ! Just don't take any math class with Felix if you want to have A or B
These reviews aren't wrong. Fikix is very tough, very fast, and often condescending. I spent alot of time preparing outside of class, and I'm typically an a,b student. I am by no means lazy and I don't believe anyone else who struggles in his class is either. Honestly I got more out of the GTA than from Filix. I dont recommend him at all.
I enjoy the fast-paced lectures. They're dynamic and fresh, rather than feeling canned (I have some professors that basically put me to sleep, zzzz). He does make you work hard for a good grade, but why is that a bad thing??
I liked how the class was structured, and I learned well with Dr. Maisch's teaching style. The tests were neither too hard nor too easy and I feel like I actually learned the material!
He's a good teacher and explains the proofs clearly, but he is a bit fast. The homework assigned was okay. The only thing that killed my grade was the midterms. They were difficult for me and a lot of other classmates, even those who studied. However, the grading curve is generous and passing the class is possible.
In my opinion he's very thorough during lecture but that also means not all materials are covered leaving you to make up the rest. Tests were difficult but if you study you'll pass them. Weekly homework roughly 2 or 3 sections/wk.
He doesn't post your grade online, be very aware of that. He talks extremely fast and rarely slows down/ stops. He is more likely than any other teacher to get through all of the material, but doesn't spend a long time on anything. Don't be shy to ask questions.
Filix is fast and very conceptually focused. You need to understand the math beyond calculating numbers. This takes a lot of time and head banging. If you aren't spending studying +3 hours for each lecture, the midterms will suck. Hour and 20 minutes is given for the Midterms which go by quickly. Know your stuff, practice... good luck.
He is the best math teacher. He will go faster during lecture but he will always be happy to cover it better at office always. He is so happy about doing math that it seems to be easy.
If you like professors who are not willing to support and help you during office hours, has tests that relate nothing to recitation and assignments, and speeds through lectures and does not slow down at any cost, then F. Maisch is the perfect fit for you! If not, STAY AWAY. Seriously had no clue what I was doing on the final.
Filix is very loud and enthusiastic. He's one of those profs who are very smart and know it, and you'll find yourself lost and confused if you don't keep up with every word. I failed both midterms but managed to pass the class, so it can be assumed the curve at the end is generous. "Know concepts, not problems" -- he does not give practice exams.
Pay attention to what he says and do the homework between classes, I got less than 50% on the first midterm and a high C on the second, when it came to final, I was only confident that I had my name correct, still passed with a C. He is very intelligent and can be very helpful, listen to everything he says, be the math, know the math, love the math
I really like the structure of the class, especially the activities. He makes the subject kind of fun too.
He moves ridiculously fast and tends to skip algebraic steps in his examples. He starts the term off abruptly, so don't expect review of previous classes. His tests are hard . His recitations Have quizzes that are based off optional homework from the textbook. (Lol didn't use the book; gotta save that $$$) Online Homework is mandatory.
The course is inherently difficult due to the online homework, but as far as the lectures go, I'm taking all the rest of my math classes with Filix if possible. Great teacher, his examples are very clear and he is really enthusiastic about the material he's teaching. Even though I'd learned the material before, I understood better after his class.
Filix is a very smart man and he lets you know it. He knows his material and can explain concepts in multiple ways. He is very conceptual and will often breeze past what he considers to be easy algebra. Take notes in class, go through them later and then you might be able to figure out what he just said. NOT AN EASY INSTRUCTOR!
Explains things very conceptually, which is sometimes confusing if you miss even one word he says. Very intelligent and always willing to help if you don't understand something. His tests were much harder than other professors' tests that I saw, but it made me truly understand the material which helped immensely in 255.
Filix gets really into whatever he's talking about. It's hard to zone out when he's getting so excited about math. Outside of the lectures, the class is consistent and well organized. The material itself will generally be difficult for most people, regardless of who is teaching it, but the class isn't structured to be intentionally antagonizing.
I took MTH253. If you choose him,Before going to class and reading his notes, you Must read and understand the book. You also can do the homework by only reading the book. After that you can go over the notes and go to class. You Must go to his OH and ask questions. Finally, Do Suggested questions. Exams are tricky, based on concept.
Dr. Maisch is a great professor. Exams are hard and expects homework to be done. He has extra review problems taken from the book that are really useful. He does give pop quizzes consisting of true/false problems. I enjoyed his humor and time flies when he shows you why certain theorems/ways are used to approach difficult problems.
Filix is a straight forward guy. He provides you with everything you need to succeed. It is up to you to take everything and use it to your advantage. He works through concepts very fast and you must keep up in class. His tests are tricky but questions are more simple than class examples. Overall he is a cool guy who knows his stuff.
pretty solid
This class is a hot mess. Textbook is some online freebie that does some of the problems in a very different way. Classes are a sprint to cover as many concepts as possible. The class goes as fast as he can write, and he writes so fast that his letters become scribbles. Assumes students understand concepts that are in future courses. Have fun!
I've taken a few classes with Felix now and I have enjoyed each one. He is certainly a challenging professor, but I think that's great because you learn the material better if you are challenged. Tests scores aren't great, but he has generous curves. I particularly like that this class has a free text and uses a free online homework system.
Easily the hardest math class I've ever taken, but Filix is eager to help and very passionate about teaching. To get by in this class you have to ask questions. You can't get away with not studying. The tests are very difficult, and are concept-oriented, not based on memorizing formula.
I took the honors class and he wrote everything on the whiteboard, which was kind of annoying since he wrote so fast and would sometimes be blocking what he was writing. He also goes a little bit fast. But Filix is eager to help any student who is struggling. As long as you ask for help, he will definitely help you (even solving packet problems).
Was not a helpful guy. Wouldnt recommend him sure. Enough said
Professor Maisch is a very smart man, and it's clear that he knows what he's talking about, but he is a very tough professor. His tests are extremely challenging, and even though the average on the final was an F, he didn't curve the class. He also goes very fast, and he would often have notes already written before class even began.
Filix's homework assignments are long and tedious, usually including large amounts of difficult algebra when the only important part of the problem is the conceptual aspect. Lectures move very fast. Chose to include more difficult content that other professors left off tests. Class Final average was an F and he didn't curve the test or the class.
Filix is a homie. He is an energetic lecturer and he really enjoys the topic area and it shows. He knows the topic extremely well and is willing to answer any questions you have. Lectures do move quickly, but they are taught well. The quiz at the beginning of class really helps to ensure you are understanding material.
He starts the year off hitting the ground running. Also the practice exams to not at all reflect the actual exams.
Literally the most passionate about math, I have lots of respect for filix
Filix's way of teaching puts extra stress on the student as he goes so fast and makes you feel like you don't know anything which encourages you to study. This makes the tests easy as the stuff covered in lecture is typically harder than the test problems. This made me successful and made me understand his style and prepared me for upper classes.
Really good prof, I always looked forward to his class, the lectures are fast and fun, and the recitation is easy and not that intensive.
Filix is by far the best math professor I have had. He makes it difficult thing easy, and is incredibly passionate. My favorite line of his is "I am excited about math, and I hope you are too!". If you are slow, this class will be rough. He moves very fast, and goes through example after example problem which make the tests easy. Go to class.
You need to study your butt off. I pulled the A and am still giving it the 5 level difficulty. The exams were intense, much more difficult than the practice exams or homework. Average on the midterm was 56% and 57% for the final and no curve for either. A lot of prayer got me through. Maisch is actually good professor though despite the difficulty.
Filix uses a flipped classroom system. Watch the stuff before class then go to class to do groupwork the entire class. He also goes super fast for no reason other because he wants to. Then your homework assignments are on content from weeks previous. This class is study heavy and he doesn't go into detail about how to do things. Very difficult.
Don't get me wrong, Filix is a very knowledgeable professor. However, his class structure is not designed to teach understanding. He teaches us through videos outside of class time which are just him reading a textbook. This class was the only math class of my life where I struggled, and I struggled HARD.
I've never had problems learning math ideas until I took Filix's class. He is a very knowledgeable teacher but his entire class structure is you learning from videos of him reading a textbook or you learning from your classmates while spending the entire class time, struggling together working on graded homework. He doesn't ever explain the "whys".
Dr. Maisch is a fantastic professor. He makes math interesting and clearly has a lot of passion. That being said, he is notoriously difficult. If you work hard, you will learn a lot.
So much homework, very difficult
Felix goes pretty fast during lectures, but it's clear that he has a lot of passion for math and genuinely wants his students to succeed. He's also really funny and his lectures are more entertaining than most. You'll still have to work hard to get a good grade, but Felix is a reasonable professor and explains concepts really well.
He was a decent teacher but his class discussions were unnecessarily hard. He also will never give any leeway with tests, for example I had done and shown all the work correctly up to one point in one test and had a small adding mistake but he didn't bother giving me partial credit on, very strict with the format of the midterms .
There's no doubt that he is passionate about his class. However passion doesn't always translate to a good teacher. His lectures are terrible while his assignments are needlessly difficult. He will do a decent job if you ask for help but I also found him to be quite rude and hostile.
Filix posts videos to his Canvas page explaining the concepts that are going to be covered in-lecture before class starts, and he expects you to watch them. This means he goes through the material quick during lecture, and expects students to be able to solve example problems in class. The class was challenging and you will need to do work.
Filix is very knowledgeable of the subject and set up the course extremely well. He is a great instructor and always willing to help and talk about Mathematics. I would highly recommend it!
Daily quizzes
Different lecture structure then I was used too, as well as a pretty heavy workload. Expect lots of practice on the concepts, all graded on correctness.
I think Filix is a passionate professor and I can appreciate some aspects of his course. However, his teaching style isn't optimal and he loves to assign very difficult questions. I don't think you'll hate your time with FIlix, but there are better options.
Very passionate about teaching and math in general. Reverse classroom setup works for some students, not all. I found myself engaged in class and understood the material more so than any other math class I've had before, which I'd attribute to his teaching style. Daily assignments can get annoying but it may be preferable in lieu of other homework.
The learning for this course was almost all done on videos before class, he didn't teach very much in lecture just put problems on the board for us to figure out. There was a lot quizzes that were all multiple choice which is good in theory but for a long calculation where make one mistake you get the whole problem wrong no exceptions.
online homework was often unnecessarily long and some questions were very difficult. gave a decent amount of partial credit on exams for questions i answered incorrectly. the pre class videos were very helpful and werent that long. as long as you try in the class you will get a good grade.
I had Filix for MTH 256H and 254H. He lectured between 5 and 15 minutes at the beginning of class and then we would work on problem sets for the rest of class. Be prepared to do a lot of work and studying outside of class. The lectures were in the form of pre-class videos. He had office hours and was easy to reach outside class. I learned lots!
Filix is engaged with students, flexible with due dates, and super helpful. The expectations were a bit high to an extent that I feel it was unfair. The in-class homework was extremely difficult and required some self-teaching, it is a complete grind to finish it before midnight. I would recommend him he will help you learn but tough class.
Filix is passionate about what he teaches, but one of the biggest hurdles are his in and out of class exercises. Most tutors at the math center were unable to help, but Filix is great at answering emails and provides extensions if needed. If you have a job/participate in many clubs, then consider making sacrifices in your schedule for this class.
If you already understand everything you might get a good grade. If you go in wanting to learn like most people good luck. He makes the class activities way to complicated and they are graded on correctness. You need to get basically all of the points if you want to pass the class. Tests are impossible to understand. If you miss a class game over
The flipped class structure is engaging and makes for a high quality learning environment. The recorded lecture videos are mostly theory-based, but during class we get lots of guided practice and there is ample opportunity to ask questions. Assignments and assessments are challenging, but fair.
He's clearly knowledgeable but flipped classroom just doesn't work for this subject. He purposely tries to submerge students in extremely difficult work before providing help, and everything is graded purely by correctness, which encouraged just getting the answers. However, tests were easier than in-class work.
This professor only teaches through short videos before class that are just read from notes that are nearly incoherent to someone who doesn't already have a master's in mathematics. If you already know the math being taught, this may be easy but if you want to learn or keep your gpa intact steer clear. Most unpleasant experience I have had at OSU.
I barely passes this class and it was only because I got help outside of his classroom. The in class assignments were way too difficult and the lectures were him reading off his notes and barely helpful.
This was my favorite math class at OSU, by far.
Avoid at all costs. Take this class either at another school or with another professor.
Dont miss a class. You wont pass otherwise. Grade is almost entirely based on in class problems that are impossible to solve without help. Even when working with others we had to split the problems between 20+ people because they could take an hour or more to solve.
This professor's teaching method has been very beneficial for me. I've found that by simply completing the pre-class work, attending lectures, and finishing the assignments, I've been able to grasp the content quite effectively without the need for additional study.
Its a reversed format, so class time is devoted to class discussion/problems that take hours outside of class to complete. He uploads online lectures to watch before class where he reads notes verbatim. Khan Academy and the Organic Chem Tutor are needed to pass. Only good things is textbook is free OpenStax. Avoid if you can.
Maisch believes heavily in a flipped classroom system, but the focus is mostly on doing the assignments in class rather than teaching. It can be hard to do the assignments in the time he sets, but if you have enough people working in a group, it's possible.
I would describe Filix as not the worst math professor I've had, but far from the best. The in class discussion activities are ridiculously hard and he talks a thousand miles per hour speed. Show up to class or you will suffer. Watch the videos or you will suffer. He could be better, he could be worse.
He didn't release the review until a day before the test and the answers weren't available until midnight the day of the test. Facilitated cramming for reasons that are beyond me. Answers student's questions in a patronizing, "you should know this it's obvious" way that makes it hard for some to speak up. His TAs are awesome. He's kind of funny.
He uses a flipped teaching style which essentially means students do 95% of their learning outside of class and class time is almost entirely used as essentially a study hall where students are allowed to ask questions and work on that day's assignment. This teaching style might work for some, but for me, (and I suspect most), it was awful.
Maisch is a great professor if you enjoy a flipped teaching style in which you do problems in class and lectures outside of class. There is a reasonable amount of homework for a math class of this level, and if you do it as well as participate in class you will surely get an A.
I have taken four math classes in this college so far; he is definitely the worst. He uses 10 minutes of the lecture to explain the lesson with very little effort and won't feel happy to answer your "not smart" question.
Felix assigns about 3 Achieve homeworks, 2 activities, and 2 pre-quizzes every week. He assigns the activities IN class but they are due the same night. Be warned that the honors section is harder. Felix treats multivariable calculus like common sense and is quite frankly rude if you do ask for help. TLDR: avoid this class if you value happiness.
The course covers hard concepts and just being lectured for 10 mins on a whole topic then being expected to solve average-high level difficulty questions till end of the day is harsh. They are all graded on correctness too. Not to mention we can't even get a solution sheet afterwards. Only the answers. How am I even supposed to see my mistakes?
Filix is a passionate, well organized, and kinda quirky teacher - really enjoyed his class! The routine: pre-class lecture video and quiz (dense lecture, p-c quizzes usually easy), in-class lecture review with example problem followed by five "class discussion exercises" (in-class HWish annoyingly due 1159 day-of), then online HW via Achieve.
Please do not take this professor, he is the worst instructor I've ever had in my life. To give you reference I had a 4.0 before I took his class, and I've never had a teacher I thought was as awful as him. All learning is done on your own outside of class, and in class every day are these chaotic little quizzes that are really hard and dumb.
Great teacher and very accessible if you need help with the class. It is a reversed classroom so your homework is to learn the material and you do practice work during class, although it is also posted online so attendance is optional.
I LOVE Maisch. He does flipped classroom, so you'll watch lecture videos outside of class, then do an example in class and a set of graded practice problems with the people around you. The class was very structured and Maisch always did a good job explaining difficult concepts and answering questions. Tests are hard but Maisch prepares you well.
Maisch blazes through notes and one (sometimes two) examples in class, his videos require pausing every 10 seconds because he talks so quickly. Does not respond well to questions, and regularly makes fun of students who ask questions he deems beneath him since they relate to Calc 1 or 2. Tests are way more difficult than examples. Be warned.
I had Dr. Maisch for three consecutive terms from Fall - Spring for MTH 254H, 255H, and 256H. Note that he can be a polarizing figure due to his flipped classroom approach. These classes cover difficult material, but if you're willing to put in effort, show up to class, and ask good questions, then Dr. Maisch will be very helpful in your success.
this dudes has to have his rate my spoofed LOL no way he has that many 5's
The mid term for this class was extremely hard. I thought this class was easy until the mid term came. The test are nothing like the practice. He get's extremely annoyed if you ask him basic questions. Worst class ever, if I had a different professor things would've been different for sure. His flipped style is awful just an excuse to do nothing.
I took AP Calc AB in high school, got a 5. 98% both semesters. In Filix's Vector Calc, I felt like a complete idiot. Granted it'd been 1 year between the two, but the class was rapidly paced. Apparently, he's the best for this class, but only because (and this was still hard) every class we only have 5 (hard) questions to work on and no "homework"
Awful professor class average was 60. Love's speed running his notes his class is extremely difficult and doesn't like answering questions.
This guy is BRUTAL! I have been putting over 30 hours a week of effort and I still can't seem to get an A. This class is level 5 difficulty! I dropped one of my other classes because this class is mandatory for my major. Please save yourself headache!
EXTREMELY difficult compared to MTH254 with a different instructor. However very personable during office hours. Recommend only taking during a light load of classes for the term, this class is BRUTAL. No homework but 5 hard questions released during every lecture, and due at the end of the day. Lec. & Rec. attendance not mandatory(should prob go).
He definitely is a smart guy and knows the subject very well, but he is a very bad teacher. Flipped classroom style is just an excuse for him to not do anything during lecture. Speed runs through the video notes and then just repeats the same thing during class time. Terrible at answering questions, just repeats everything he had previously said.
His flipped classroom style relies heavily on lectures outside of class and questions in class, both of which he is poor at doing. Doesn't answer questions in an understandable way and lectures are just him reading notes. Avoid this class if you can.
The videos are helpful sort of. They don't really show how to do the math, just explain the concepts. In class you have problems you do with other students and he will gladly help you get through them as they are very difficult. He lectures for about 10-15 mins a day and does an example which I found do not relate to the problems at all. Not fun.
Maisch is a hardcore guy. He gives you much harder problems than other professors but he gives them to you in class so you can actually get his and the learning assistants help on the work. These difficult questions prepare you so well for the tests that the tests while hard because this is a difficult enough class, SO MUCH EASIER.
Filix has a reversed lecture style where you learn everything outside of class through videos and lecture notes then do a quick review and practice problems in class (Work as a group on these!!!). The TA's are your best bet for getting help in class because Maisch won't understand why you don't grasp something.
Simply one of the worst teachers/professors I've ever had the displeasure of taking a course from, largely on account of the flipped classroom. Lectures are useless unless you get the chance to actually get help from either him or a TA. Learned much more during my recitations than I ever did from him.
Don't care about the flipped classrooms see so many complaints about that but it's more he should show his work more because filix does so much math in his head and goes through it fast. How are we supposed to learn from that? Doesn't know how to teach period.
Not a good professor always speed run through his notes and expects you to be professional. For example, if he sees that something that turns into 0 he will be like oh this is obvious that this is zero. He is lazy to show his work. Try to avoid him if you want to save your grade.
Filix isn't inherently a bad professor---I would actually consider him the best for this course. However, his way of teaching doesn't align with my way of learning, and I often get quite confused with his methodology; I believe many students feel the same way. Additionally, the course is extremely fast-paced, while also being quite test-heavy.
Flipped classroom style is hard for me, however Filix was very helpful in office hours. Very homework heavy class (every lecture has a five question quiz that opens at the end of lecture and closes at midnight), but when I asked for extensions because of my work schedule he gave it no questions asked. Doable class once you know how he works.
He is very passionate about the content he is teaching and very helpful in class. However, to do well in the class you need to put in a lot of time outside of class.
Filix gets harsh ratings because of the flipped classroom model and the difficulty of the class, but I learned better using the flipped classroom model (it really depends on the person). Filix gives less homework than other 254 teachers. Tests aren't bad if you study, but the final is really difficult. He says he doesn't do A- but I got one
When I first started my vector calculus class with Filix I was excited for active learning however that excitement soon turned into frustration with him. The videos you are supposed to watch before class are extremely unhelpful and Filix assumes you understand everything and won't give you a good answer to a question if you have one. A rude teacher
It's a hell of a lot of work, and he moves REALLY fast compared to other professors on the same subject. If you're the type of person that can keep up with that, great: his class will be the perfect fit for you. Unfortunately I did not fall into that category. He's passionate, and he's helpful (most of the time) but for me, it just felt overwelming
Felix is not my favorite, but I honestly learned a lot better from him than who I had for 254. He gives some incredibly challenging problems due in less than 8 hours, which was annoying, but they helped me gain a huge understanding of concepts from class. Having him go over the same concept over multiple days can get pretty boring, though.
Filix is straightforward and he knows his stuff damn good. He does not beat around the bush. If you go to his office hours and you do not know the material, he will make it shown. He does a great job at making you truly work for an understanding. Was not an easy class. It shouldn't have been. Great lecturer. Would take again.
FOR MTH 342 - The wording on most problems were confusing. He uses a flipped classroom, but the pre-class videos are the same as in-class lectures where he reads off a paper at 3x speed. This class was hard to follow, definitely not for me to take with him but was forced to since he was the only one teaching LA2. Not surprised the final was curved.
He assigns lecture videos before class along with a short quiz on that day's topic. During class, he spends about 20 minutes going through an example problem before giving you 5 questions that need to be submitted to canvas (best to work with others!!!) by midnight. Its' difficult but not impossible if you spend the time needed on the material.
Most straightforward professor ever. Just do a little work before class and you'll be alright.
He is an Ok teacher, but treats the class like everyone is a math major. The notes and lectures are entirely proof-based and extremely difficult to read and understand if you don't have previous knowledge of the topic. While there isn't a ton of assignments, they do take a while, especially the weekly online homework.
The entirety of the course content is taught via proofs. This is great for CS majors or Math majors who have taken a class involving proofs or how to use proofs. Filix is proud that his class is the first class in the math series that is “more removed from doing calculations”. He should not be proud. He should very much not be proud.
Does a "reverse classroom" teaching style, iykyk. It's like making a kid eat vegetables. It's good for u to learn this way but boy do I hate it and it makes it harder. (But I remember the concepts better and get better intuition). Only complaint is lack of calculators and note sheets on exams (be ready to memorize equations!)
The less I interact with Filix, the more confident I feel in my linear algebra abilities. Having taken the class before (OSU didn't accept my credit), I did better when I fell back on my old notes and ignored Filix. Filix also doesnt ever do application problems, which is the best part of linear algebra. Take it with anyone else, or somewhere else.
If you are a math/abstract person then his style might fit, otherwise no. First few weeks focused on basic computation with matrices, fine, but the rest quickly became incomprehensible. Every calculus class was MUCH easier for me to comprehend. HIGHLY recommend watching 3blue1brown's Essence of Linear Algebra before taking. Flipped class was so so.
When I took this class, I had a pretty bad health flare up and was bedridden for two weeks. This included missing the midterm. However, Prof. Maisch was incredibly understanding and allowed me to take it late with no stipulations. He was also very responsive w/ emails + scheduled OHs. I don't think I would have passed the class without Prof. Maisch
Took summer section. Hardest class I've taken as a CS major. I was able to understand everything at a computational and conceptual level, but proofs were intense. Main issue I have is that the lectures are very fast-paced and proof-based, so if you're like me, they're hard to follow. Filix is nice and accommodating, but be prepared to get owned.
I found his use of the flipped classroom model to be ineffective. It works for me in other classes, but he just moves way too fast in the examplar. It usually leaves me feeling deflated and unconfident in the material. Beware the class discussion activities, they are difficult and graded on correctness. If you're not a math whiz, don't take him.
Flipped classroom model doesn't work for me, I don't learn anything and have to teach myself after the lecture, as I don't understand the pre-lecture. Due to this I don't do good on tests. His attitude when answering questions is also not good, and due to this i prefer to ask the LAs questions instead, and wouldn't go to office hours to get help.
Since the in-class activities are reused test questions, you basically need to have a high-level understanding of the concepts the day you learn them. Compared to other sections the tests are longer and the questions are more difficult. Be prepared to spend the rest of the day after lecture on the in-class activities.
Random participation checks at least once a week and specifically does them after he watches someone leave class early. He will tell you not to read the textbook, but it's probably better if you do because he's pretty horrible at explaining whatever the material is and the pre-lecture video (that has a 2 question quiz due before class) doesn't help
He uses a flipped classroom model which he thinks is very helpful but it didn't really work for me. He expects you to come into lecture already fully understanding the material and the in class activities are reused test questions, so he basically expects you to be able to be tested on the material right after learning it.
At first, I wasn't sure about it due to the flipped classroom, but then when working with students in other sections I realized that I knew more about the subject than they did and could help them understand it. For that I have to credit the teaching style.
It's not MTH 254H; it's Filix. All his flipped classroom did was flip my goal of a 90% off a cliff. Notes were unclear and videos were useless. He moves way too fast in his exemplars problem. And honestly, I think he got the big OH office only because his “class discussion” activities are terribly hard that a lot of people need to see him.
