Reads from the book in class; lectures put you to sleep; tough-grader
She's tough, but fair. You have to know everything she goes over.
Gives students the "evil eye"
Lectures were rarely helpful...not a good setting for problem-based learning
put me to sleep, so mediocre that i often skipped class
horrible teacher, very boring, reads from the book, no surprises on tests
one of the most boring teachers i've ever had
Nice lady, but not clear, exams are hard.
I felt like i was in 3rd grade, boring as hell
gives clear notes in class, fair exams
she was a very nice lady, but very boring. the tests weren't difficult.
seems disorganized, lectures quickly; expects a lot of detail on test answers
not too bad, tough grader but she does curve, kind of boring at times though
Very dull. She made me forget the stuff I used to know.
just take notes, then write it all down, big curve and big range for an A
tests are all from old exams. nice lady, but can be boring
No Comments
Shes friendly although her lip quivers while at the overhead projector.
PLEASE! TAKE SOMEONE ELSE! BORING! BORING! SO UNCLEAR AND BORING!
Very boring. Needs to be more clear. Exams are difficult Class puts me to sleep.
very boring, and her test are very hard! must study a lot!!

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER....very boring and tests are hard
She claimed it was a "crime against humanity to give students A's and B's"
Boring and difficult! Tests have nothing to do with the class notes
No personality, boring lectures, tries to trick you on exams
Boring, unclear, very hard tests, gives you more work then other sections
TESTS ARE IMPOSSIBLE!
told re to TA to make the quizes harder because too many people were getting A's
Tests are deliberately impossible!
clear notes, tests from notes. totally willing to help. just talk to her!
Somebody tell her how to pronounce Guanine!!
I've seen monkey **** fights more organized than her lectures. Very unclear.
impossible... hard tests, not nice, boring, class rules suck
Wonderful woman, very helpful, go to class and take lots of notes
hahahha- "goo-anine"
dont go to lecture-you'll just fall asleep-notes make you more confused-DULL
one word....BORING!!! Tests are tricky even if you know the info.!!

truely the worst teacher i have ever had

Please don't make the same mistake I did in taking this class!!! she sucks

tests are poorly written and hard to do well even if you understand all material
do study guide and you will be fine. papers are confusing, Avoid the LAB
What the hell is her problem, tests are nothing like the lectures. F**K her
tricky multiple choice tests
easy class if you read the book and don't depend on the boring, unclear lectures
not very organized when it comes to giving notes (topic jumper)
easy class
very unclear, unorganized, worst prof i've ever had...get the picture?
If u can understand lips.. then may u can hopefully make it through..
Who let the dog out? Seriously stay away from this professor
Boring, but easy
She's soooo nice! shes my advisor and teacher. she is so helpful.. do study guide you'll be fine! take this class!
multiple choice exams aren't written clearly and are confusing even if you really understand the material. It's still very easy to get an A though without doing well on the tests. (80% = A)
SOOOOOOOOOOOOO terrible run and hide. The worst biology class ever. Test are so hard so confusing. All I can say is run if you can. Coming to class wont help you and going to see her is no hope. Find another teacher. Its just terrible. Run
bring a tape recorder to class and you will be ok. She is always willing to help. She always provides plentful diagrams and doesnt have trick questions on the exam, and if a question is confusing, she always tries to explain it.
Molecular bio. Need I say more. Hard, but not impossible. Got an A by recopying notes. Go to lecture!!!
Took her for molecular. The class wasn't that bad. I didn't read the book. Just copied over my notes and went to class and got an A. PBL sucked though. I hated that part of the class
Impossible. Uses awkward wording on tests, and even if you attend all lectures and read the text and understand concepts, there is no guarantee you will do well on an exam.
RUN AWAY! She thinks she is the goddess of all things biology, but shes def not! even if you go to class, tests are still confusing!
She's terrible. It's very hard to stay awake in the class, when you do, it seems like she's speaking Greek. She's also insane, She speaks to herself!!!! She walk around thinking of what to say and teach the class. I don't know how she got hired as a Pro.
SAVE YOURSELF.... SOS.. do not even put your GPA through this.
Unless you love biology as much as she does, you will not enjoy this class. She skips around in the book and is really confusing, especially on tests, she does curve your overall grade, nice person, but very very boring, she can't teach.
lectures are boring and all over the place, incoherent and sometimes confusing; dont dare ask her a question about your exam after you get it back, she'll be a witch about it
Can barely function as a human let alone a professor. Lectures are an absolute joke. Rambles through material and can't answer questions unless it's from the book. Seriously, why is she still a professor? She's awful. A crime against humanity.
THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER. AVOID!
Very incoherent. Will not know your name if not in the Med. Scholars program. Jumps around a lot. The class isn't entirely all that difficult if you study everything and remember every enzyme and little detail.
She said that I always look worried in class. But I'm worried about her more than anything else. She's boring and u want to fall asleep but u can't b/c she goes way too fast, the only reason y i'm acing this course is b/c i had a good bio teacher in hs.
No idea what she is saying at any time
Worst Professor ever. Makes absolutely no sense in lectures. You can study as much as possible and will still find things on exam that youve never heard of. NEVER TAKE HER IF POSSIBLE!
She is a very nice lady. Unfortunately a little crazy. She talks to herself, and her lectures are somewhat confusing. You better be good at studying on your own if u want to do well on the tests, which are really hard and detail-specific. But she is an easy grader tho.
I T.A.ed for this teacher and she didn't even remember me!
Worst teacher, avoid her at all costs. lectures are confusing, she jumps around. if you want to do well, you have to study on your own. even then, theres info you never learned on the test. you will fall asleep in class
No Comments
I really liked her alot. Her lectures were very in depth, and she was always willing to help. She teaches the review sessions, unlike other professors who have TA's teach them. I would recommend her, and I would definitely take her class again.
DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!! you've been warned
Bad teacher. Very confusing, tricky exams. She has a nice grading scale though...80% is an A.
Shes is Crazy! She can't speak english, and she's American...she pronounces Guanine (Goo A Neen)... she says things like "To be begun". and she can't teacher, her I shake too, whats up wit that?
let me just say, she's a very sweet lady and I'm sure she's brilliant at her real job - research. however, if you value your GPA, time, and sanity, DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS LADY. I thought "how bad could it be?"... it was worse.
She's a nice lady. The class isn't too difficult, however she is a comparative grader. Therefore you may know the material, but if someone else knows it better, you're screwed.
Very confusing...everything that comes out of her mouth contradicts something she said like three minutes before that. Nice lady, horrible teacher, enough said.
ATTENTION ALL BIO/HEALTH RELATED MAJORS! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS OR ANY OTHER CLASS W/THIS LADY, SHE'S NICE BUT SHE'S BORING AND JUMPS AROUND IN LECTURE! HER TESTS ARE EXTREMELY HARD-I DOUBT SOME OF THE MATERIAL ON THESE TESTS WAS EVEN DISCUSSED IN CLASS! DOESN'T MAKE AN EFFORT TO GET TO KNOW STUDENTS EITHER-ESP THOSE IN HER BIO LIFE CLUSTERS-AVOID!
Is professor Schmieg unclear? yes, without a doubt. I wouldnt suggest any intro bio classes (207/8) without a strong bio background (ie:APs) with any teacher. A good reference guide to the book is Cliff's Notes to AP bio, but you still have to read. I got a B+, bcuz of lab. raise hand only if u no answers. dont be a smart ass...she hates that
Lectures are very boring, just go and write down which examples she uses and then go and read the chapters on your own. Book is very helpful in this class. Seemes unfair in her grading of the paper and debates.
She is so unfair. She told the class we could get points back for our tests and I took it to her attempting to get a mere 3 points. I got NOTHING and she stormed out on me like a 5 year old. She said "I'm pulling rank" and gave me the grade she thought I should have, even though her questions did not elicit the response. Total female dog.
I was so excited for this class at first. It was after having to memorize asanine material like 150 different proteins instead of actually concentrating more on mechanisms and stuff that actually teaches students that I hated this class. Unfair tests and grading...take a diff professor for this class. She ruins such an interesting class.
Hardest class I ever took!! She is confusing and unclear and unfair with her notes and testing. Worst college class so fair!!
probably the worst professor ever. seriously, don't go to class, you really really don't need to, just read the book. Tests are weird. she's weird. she can't say equilibrium or guanine right, everyone know it. grades the pbl horribly. bio lab is even worse, don't be an overachiever on ur lab write ups, it will only hurt you. just don't take her k.
exactly what everyone else said. She is just a bad teacher. I'm a bio major and I love bio, however she managed to make me almost switch my major. She's boring and mispronounces basic bio vocab. The only upside to class is when she makes reference to things dying, like cats and smothered people
she is a horrible teacher. do not take her class.
terrible teacher. she writes so small you can barely see it. i do not recommend taking this class with her. i love bio but now i want to change my major. i study for every test and still fail. really confusing and unclear.
Day one, in a room full of freshman bio majors, she said "there just aren't any jobs in biology out there"?!? 4 years later, med-tech, big pharma, etc... are on fire. This professor was the least in touch with their field of study that I'd ever encountered. Changed my major because of her and probably didn't need to. Awful.
She is the worst... I am a premed student and she has no idea of how to teach. Her lectures are very boring and unorganized. avoid her as much as possible.
Florence is a very nice person. Too bad that means nothing when it comes to class... She's a terrible teacher. I honestly mean that, she sucks at teaching. I'm sure she's a pro at research, but her teaching methods are awful. Go to classes, but don't poo yourself if you miss one. Study the book and do her practice tests and you'll do fine on tests
She is THEEEE WORST TEACHER I have ever had. I can not understand anything she says. She is so confusing and unclear. Not to mention she bases her lectures off of confusing/complex diagrams on the overhead. I have gotten 50's on both of my tests, thank god for lab. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS whatever you do!!
She is really nice and trys to joke with us, but she is a horrible teacher. She lectures off the overhead with diagrams that are confusing and faded and then tests us on what is in the book anyway. I am a nursing major which requires biology knowledge and i was fine in highschool, but i didn't do well on any of her tests. thank goodness for lab!
Schmieg gets very excited about teaching biology, however she struggles in teaching it. She tries hard though: gives a good outline of topics for the test, does a review before each test, and her grading scale makes it bearable although her tests are wordy and tricky (if you get above a 50, you pass with a C at least)
Dr Schmieg is nice and tries to make you pass. However, I do not really understand what she teaches.
Not a good teacher but it's not impossible to do well. Lab and the PBL (debate) can help a lot. Get a bio ap book to help, its shorter and clearer than the text. She's all over the place and doesn't go into as much detail as the textbook so its unnecessary. Tests are hard no matter how much you study. Got a B+ and didnt get higher than 70 on test
Sweet lady, but not a great teacher. Lab is awful, but the class project is actually interesting. Her lectures are really tough to follow, so print out the study guide to follow along. Tests are TOUGH, so study the practice tests you're given. She curves your grades at the end of the semester, so you're likely to be pleasantly surprised.
She means well, but is an incompetent instructor b/c she's disorganized, mispronounces basic vocab, and makes several grammatical mistakes in lecture& her tests are just as incoherent. I did decently well b/c of PBL, lab and her generous grading scale. Also failed to get to know any of her students, especially in her life clusters, avoid!
She made me hate biology and she's the reason I changed my major to something else. All of her projects are completely pointless and are useless. Change out of her class. GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN.
I personally liked her. Yes her class is hard, but then again its BIOLOGY.. so you expect it. you MUST study her notes AS WELL AS THE TEXT!! her exams are based mostly on her notes. The wording is tricky but DO-ABLE. this is a must-study-to-pass class. If you're into it.. you'll pass. GO TO OFFICE HOURS she is very nice and the help is great!
Bio was my major until I had this prof and realized I would have to take her again. The notes are her comments on figures out of the text, then you are responsible for teaching yourself from finding the figures in the text and reading about them. Class project was fun, but that was IT. Terrible professor, do NOT take it with her
DREADFUL.Worst woman in the world.Could not possibly be a worse teacher or person. Rude to her students and does not want them to do well. When you go in for extra help she makes you feel like an idiot and doesn't help you at all. Tests don't seem hard but they are a trick. Can't even pronounce words. Changing my major because of her. GET OUT NOW
I can't even begin to express how terrible this woman is. Worked my ass off all semester only to get a C+. Doesn't care about her students doing well, offers nothing for extra points, but makes tests so impossible that you need them. Switched my major so I never have to take her again. Terrible experience. You will hate biology after her. TERRIBLE.
she is the WORST professor. all she does is stand in front of the class and reads off her powerpoint, also messing up words and confusing herself on what she's lecturing about. Her notes are her trying to explain the pictures in the slides, which she does a horrible job. tests are extremely hard, studying 2-3 weeks in advance and you still do bad
Not a great teacher. Goes fast through lectures and does not explain things very well. Exams are challenging, and the lab exam is impossible. I recommend a tutor for this class.
She really isn't that bad, just not interesting. Having a background in bio would be helpful though. She e-mails you her slides and reads them word-for-world in her lectures, so not much valuable information is given in class. Her notes are right from the book too so reading isn't essential
If you can do not take Schmeig. Her notes are all over the place and her tests are impossible. She makes the questions so confusing they are almost impossible to answer. The only good thing is there is no final.
Despite her horrible ratings, you should take this professor. None of the professors for this course are decent from what I've heard (and I've heard a lot). This professor has a great curve, noncumulative final, an easy, grade-boosting project. The lab is boring and completely useless. Use the online book videos to study at the very least.
All upper level science courses are going to be challenging, there is no getting around it! However, there are better professors who are actually knowledgeable, clear, and engaging, unlike Dr. Schmieg. It's a shame she was in charge of the Bio LIFE clusters, everyone in my section wanted to switch majors in my class! Avoid if you can!
Clear and friendly. Exams are beasts though, prepare to write until your hand falls off. Group paper and presentation are wastes of time
Schmieg is an acquired taste. If you like power points and boring lectures being read off the slide, go for it. However, she is a good instructor. She loves being asked questions and will always answer, and answers email questions as well. A non-cumulative final, a fair curve, and a helpful professor make Schmieg worth it. Just make sure to LISTEN!
Her tests are pretty hard so study the material really well. she gives a good grade boosting project which really helps. her curve is huge, i had a 54 and she curved it to a c. mainly study the slides because she tells you what you need to know. non cumulative final which is so nice.
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IN ONE SENTENCE: She gives three impossible tests, an easy project, no final, and a decently difficult lab course.
Just listen to what she says in class and write down stuff she says in addition to the slides. If you do that and study the notes you took and the slides then you will be fine. I managed to get an A with that advice.
AP Bio saved my butt for this class. The content is rather difficult and so are her exams. There were some ugly multiple choice questions! She has the information that you need, but you need to go to her to get it.
She cares about Bio, but is kind of difficult to talk to in person.
Extremely friendly, knows her stuff, don't listen to the other reviews! Your grade in the class correlates with the amount of work you put in.
this class really wasn't that bad. if you pay attention and study, you will be fine. use the book to study and do the practice questions and concept checks. the old exams don't help, but they show you how her questions are worded. Class is pretty boring, since she reads from a powerpoint, but she does examples that she puts on the exam
awful teacher just reads off the power point boring the tests arent what you would expect at all avoid if u can
Very disorganized. You do not need to go to class because everything she says makes no sense. I hope you know how to read minds because when you take her test you have to know what was going through her mind when she made the question. Nurses, this is a requirement, USE YOUR BOOK! especially the online connect. Her curve is huge, which is good.
Schmieg is definitely not going to be your favorite professor. She is very boring to listen to and reads right from her powerpoints. Her test questions are next to impossible, but she does give a big curve. She assigns group work which gets annoying. Overall, i'll be glad when i'm finished with this class. Do not take her class if you dont have to!
The class is pretty difficult. She isn't very clear and reads directly off the slides. It's nearly impossible to pay attention n her class and the tests are ridiculous. It is possible to pass but getting a decent grade will require a lot of hard work. She gives a pretty steep curve so nearly everyone passes. Good luck!
SO hard. not even worth going to class. i wish i got more out of this class but i ended up teaching myself everything. Flo is not a good teacher, but she is definitely a smart lady.
I barely studied for this class and still received an A-. Do not attend the lectures, they do not help and they just confuse more. If you didn't take AP BIO you might have a harder time, but she curves everything so much, it's hard to get less than a B.
Schmieg really isn't as bad as people say. In addition to attending lectures, where it was hard to pay attention, I rewatched the UD captures online and took notes from that. I also read the textbook which was helpful. Tests are sort or difficult, but if you study a lot and put in effort, there's no way you can't get at least an A- in the class.
Oh, where to start. This class was horrible. I didn't learn much from lectures. The lab helped though. Her powerpoints are alright, so you don't have to go to class (unless its group work day). But she can't explain the topics well. She kept going back and correcting herself. Good thing is she curves sooo much (Thank God!).
If you took AP Bio, you have a good chance. If you didn't, at least she has a really good curve. Going to lectures is not needed. Just study from the book, use the online site for practice. If you fail, don't worry, everyone does.
She really knows her stuff but she is not clear at all. If you do attend class, bring your computer to take notes and just listen to what she says. She bounces around slides a lot but atleast she uses pictures. She has a huge curve cause she doesn't want us to fail. Make sure you get all the easy points you can! She's nice but unorganized.
Very bad professor. if you took AP Biology in high school you should be fine but if you didn't youre out of luck. She goes so fast and just reads off her power points. Tests very hard, 3 and a final(not cumulative). Relied on labs, group projects and the curve.
terrible teacher, reads straight off of power points and isn't clear with information
She is absolutely terrible. she talks in circles the entire class and her exams are impossible. the class average is usually a 58 and I would rather stay home and read through the book than go sit through class.
Absolutely terrible. I could've (and have) learned more from prudent use of wikipedia than from enduring this class. Obviously taught for pre-meds who live by rote memorization. She is not at all gracious when answering questions, which really makes me question how competent she is to be teaching this material in the first place.
She is terrible. her teaching style is very monotone, she's probably the most boring person I've ever had to talk to. She's no where near helpful and has a really bad attitude. Her tests are impossible to pass with higher than a 69.
Dr. Schmieg is a nice lady, but she is really boring. She sounds very monotone and everything she teaches is directly from the textbook. She also has a really good curve which helped boost my grade. If you want to do well, read the textbook and try your best in lab (there's a lab final at the end of the semester).
Doesn't know what she's talking about, doesn't help students at all in class. When questions are asked, she rarely responds without a question as an answer. She steals her powerpoints from the book and claims that her slides are better than the book.
Lectures basically consist of going through the figures from the book and having her explain it to the best of her ability. To prepare for tests you have to read through the book and memorize every part of every slide. If you can do that you will do well... its not easy. Final Group project helps bring grade up by a bit since she grades it easily
Worst class I ever took. Tests are impossible, lectures are confusing and put you to sleep. She is extremely unclear on her PBL assignments and just excepts the students to read her mind. Never done as bad in a course in my life as I did in her bio 205, and I am a health science major.
Her lectures are incredibly confusing. It is sometimes more beneficial to read the book alongside the powerpoint than to try to understand her confusing lectures. If you try to follow along to her lectures, be sure to bring your laptop, or you'll oftentimes be scrambling to write a full slide of notes in 20 seconds.
Hard class but if you took AP Bio you are set. Be prepared to teach yourself after each lecture. You have to knit together bits and pieces of her lecture and make connections she doesn't point out in class. Tests were easy for me but very hard for others. She gives practice tests but you really need to understand the material thoroughly.
The class is all memorization, and not nearly as difficult as everyone makes it seem. If you have background in bio already, then it will be a piece of cake. Otherwise, if you just skim the chapters the night before the exams, then you can get an A pretty easily with minimal effort. 84 and up was an A. Not the best prof, but it's an intro course
You could study for 30 hours for Florence's exams and still only get a 44. But don't worry, group PBL's and Bio Lab and her curve will boost your grade to at least a C! Don't bother showing up, getting the textbook, or even studying for that matter.
I really liked Dr. Schmieg as a person, she was really nice but a confusing professor. Although her tests are hard everything is curved and the labs really helped with grades so don't worry! Taking ap bio in high school was a big help. The textbook helped me a lot.
Lectures are scattered and very confusing- sometimes she throws in unnecessary details. Use the textbook and her PPTs on sakai for clarity. Despite her confusing lectures she is such a nice lady and is willing to help her students as long as they ask. Go to her office hours if you're confused about a topic and she will likely help you!
She was not a great professor. She was very hard to understand and her tests are nearly impossible. Most of us got Ds and Fs on the tests, but she adds a huge curve at the end of the semester.. Group projects and lab will bring your grade up. Don't buy the textbook. Good luck!!
This was one of the worst classes I have ever taken. The powerpoints were unclear, and she talked in circles the whole time. She gave maybe 30 seconds to write down all of the information on a slide, which never made sense anyway. It's better to just skip class and watch Khan Academy videos and then rely on the curve for your final grade.
Lectures go in circles and powerpoints are just pictures from the textbook. You dont have to go to class unless its a PBL day (which she says in advance). If your PBLs are extremely detailed, you will do well. Tests are MC& very hard. I didnt go to class, but studied for hours&read the book and got an A. She has a hugeee curve at the end (84 & upA)
Love this class!! 10/10
The professor's lectures are honestly useless because she either focuses on one topic or jumps around from topic to topic with no control or thought throughout the class. You're better off skipping and just teaching the material yourself from youtube. It's easier that way.
