Very rude + obnoxious, no good explanations for material and his slides suck. He talks down to students and tries to humilize them when they ask questions. He makes it clear he would rather be working in his lab instead of in class.

The only reason he is still teaching is because he is the only Chem. professor at UCF qualified to teach p-chem. Miserable, miserable man. Worst professor at UCF.
Lets face it, Physical chemistry can be hard. If you show some interst and make an effort he'll do the same with you.
Material is beyond most peoples capacity, unfortunately they take that out on him by giving bad ratings. I never saw him try to "humilize" anyone but some people "humilized" themselves. Slides are cluttered but make sense if you read
He is a good teacher. Some of us try to blame our professors for our misery. You need to read.
May sometimes ask ambiguous questions. Expects you to go beyond what is in the book (so get a another quantum text). Tests aren't that bad if you do the PROBLEMS in the Atkins text and DO THE PROBLEMS HE SUGGESTS. Look out for trick questions.
The worst prof at UCF. He had no concern for the students grades. I studied for hours and hours and still failed the tests. He did not want to help students outside of class. He actually told us not to email him or come by his office!

Students have a hard time in this class with him because he is so hot and charming that one cannot concentrate in class, Believe me!
He makes a difficult subject even worse.
Doesn't give a crap about students.
Dr. Hernandez is the best teacher WE'VE ever had. Cares A LOT about students always has time for us. It is a difficult class and he has a great sense of humor to make it bearable. Bad students blame the professor for their bad grades so all those other comments are WRONG!!!!!!! He is also VERY hot!
HORRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIBBBBBBBBLEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!RUNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!
Very good at teaching complicated materials in an easier way. Tests are hard!! So prepare ahead of time. Usually very helpful at the officehours. Help students that are serious and eager to learn.
You'll get no help from this guy. But he is the only one who teaches pchem so if you are a chemistry major, you are screwed.
Great Teacher!! Very Hard tests beacause the material is tough but follow his guidelines and you will survive. All the best!
horrrrrribbbbleeeeeeeeeeee
What is up with this guy? Does not stay focused. Frequently not avail. for office hours. Perhaps he thinks his looks will do all the talking. Horrible.
This guy is the worst chemistry professor that I have had here in chemistry at UCF, and that is saying a lot when you consider Geiger and Miles.
While he's hard he's fair, when he has designated time to help you he helps, fairly tough grader, if you're looking for an easy grade def not the professor for you. You will learn if you apply yourself, he's not giving anything to you, except the tools you need to succeed; you have to earn iwhat you want.
Wonderful professor who brings clarity to a hard subject such as PCHEM I.
scariest class ive ever taken. Avoid at all costs!
Nothing he teaches on the powerpoints he makes end up on the tests. Might as well skip classes until he shows questions from the tests on the powerpoint and teach yourself on what the questions are. I recommened reading the book before he teaches in class to make sense of whats being taught.
The professor is very interested in making sure you learn the material and not just go for the heck of it but by doing so can make chemistry a little more confusing. However, I think hes fair as long as you read the book and do some quizzes in the textbook website youll do fine. I got a 87 in the class but with the curve a 96

I took PCHM Lab with Dr. Hernandez and I found out he is not bad as the other students think. He is the best professor so far I have in UCF. If you listen careful what he said you will be find. Yes, he is very hard, but even if you have 'C' in his class is paid off.If you take his classes be ready to study hard. Best professor.
Definitely need to study for this class and attending class really helps. He gives you his power point notes but reviews everything the day before the test. He genuinely cares about your learning and tries to help you.
This professor is great. He truly tries to teach you something so that you learn it, not so that you can just forget about it after class. He has a bit of an accent, which makes his stories even funnier. Every time I have a question, he is willing to sit with me for an hour after class until I completely understand. I recommend him very much.
Class is very difficult and he isn't clear but if you ask questions he's willing to help and he teaches better one on one. His accent makes everything harder to understand. If you do study though the tests are a piece of cake.
Found this class incredibly difficult. There are no homework or quizzes, just exams and the final, so if you're not a good test-taker and need the extra fluff to help your grade I reccomend another professor. However, he is very nice and truly wants to help his students.
For a lower level chemistry class, I found it more difficult than it should've been. Although I take most of the blame for not studying thoroughly. The professor truly cares for your learning however the class grade comprises of only test grades. To pass his class, first attend it then practice as many problems out of the textbook as possible!
If you do not want spanish word incorporated questions. I highly do not recommend him.
Its a very challenging class if you don't go. He doesnt give very good class notes such as powerpoints but he does make up for it by sending study guides before the exam. all in all his handwriting is terrible, he has an accent and only gives exams but he a good teacher if you already know chemistry.
Hernandez is a hard professor. He is very sarcastic in a rude way. Also, he has an accent and he is not good at explaining things. There are 3 tests and the final. He doesnt tell you what to excpect for the test and the questions on the test are very difficult. Class is not mandatory, but you NEED to buy the book and go to SI in order to pass.
Unless you already know a decent bit about Chemistry, I would not recommend this instructor. His accent makes it very difficult to understand him, and you are only graded on his very difficult tests. He expects quite a bit for an entry level chemistry course! I am an A student, and study a lot, but not sure if I will pass this class.
this class is ridiculous. the professor teaches "at a higher level" as he puts than whats actually in the book. I attended every lecture and studied for every test and still had to withdrawal because i couldnt comprehend what he was teaching half the time. Very unclear. DONT RECOMMEND FOR A BASIC CHEM CLASS!
I would NOT recommend this class for anyone. Hernandez is very unclear, and his tests are beyond ridiculous. Many people pass just because they figured out the "pattern" of answers. I'm definitely not passing this class even though I consider myself a pretty good student. Thumbs down!!
Ridiculously hard class. He got rid of power points and has a heavy accent so understanding everything is difficult. I'm an A student and I received my first F ever in his class. I would not recommend him.
Has a borderline funny/rude personality; was quite unsympathetic to students with extenuating circumstances (medical concerns)
This class could have been a breeze if Hernandez wasn't teaching it. You can pass if you know how to figure out 10 question "patterned" scantron tests. He is a very smart man, but he is NOT a good teacher.
Not an easy class, but the professor is isn't that bad. His intentions are good. You just really have to teach yourself. He is very understanding if you are sick and have a medical note, he will let you make up the test.
i do not recommend this class if you are not extremly good at chem. he really does try to make us understand but it hardly ever worked. test are easier than what is taught but the class is mostyly you teaching yourself. and there were 3 test and one final exam that was half of your grade i would go to class and see if he has changed teaching styles
Terrible experience, i squeaked by with a C. Pretty much every question on his tests are the hardest questionsn the book which he never goes over clearly. Methods of teaching are off and confusing and there is absolutely no clairty even when he reviews. I tought myself everything from this course solo.
The man is BRILLIANT, there is not doubt about that. But for a basic Chemistry course, it's nearly impossible to pass. I think the only way you can truly pass is if you have a light course load and devote A Lot A LOT of time to this class. If you need more Chemistry courses for your major, he makes you want to change it. I'm no slacker either.
The class is not easy but chemistry never is. He is enthusiastic about the subject & tries to be funny. Decent TAs. The spiral book he recommends is unnecessary. You have to go to the SI classes and attend class. I have a C but chem is always hard. The only downside I can think of is that he chooses very difficult test questions from the book.
He's brutal. I'm a senior and picked up chm so my sciences will appear more challenging on my transcript. He was the ONLY professor teaching 2040 this semester. As far as patterned tests, there's only been 1 out of 3. After exam 2, I just gave up going to class. If you've had some chm in the past, you should be ok. if not, then good luck.
This class is not easy, and I don't recommend to anyone who isn't a strong test taker. He cares a lot about the students and clearly enjoys teaching. He is fair when it comes to curves. Make sure you study heavily, and know the material very well. Test questions come from the problems in the back of the book, usually the harder problems. I got an A
Yes, he is very hard.Do the questions at the end of the chapters, ALL OF THEM.A few tests were patterned,if you can figure it out then you should be ok.HUGGGEEE curve so for anyone that says they got an A its most likely due to his GENEROUS curve, and for that I don't think he's so bad.You will def learn in this class.
Not an easy class by any means, but it's chemistry and this is college. Worked very hard and ended up with a high B in the class. He is a nice guy and does care about his students. he is nice if you go see him during office hours. and his accent isn't bad at all...some people are just uncultured. study hard and you can pass. taking him for 2041.
Chem is never easy but it is only chem 1 so it will get harder. He means well but does not fully deliver. Luckily, he is constantly adjusting towards improving his teaching style. Best advice: Do the problems in the end of each chapter and rework the problems done in class. If he even mentions a problem... DO IT! Large study groups NOT recommended.
Took CHM 2041 over the summer. His summer classes are much easier compare to regular semester classes. Study hard and you will get the grade you want. Not a bad professor, his teaching style is clearly improving. Make sure to do problems for CHM 2040 and for CHM 2041 make sure to read the book.
He is a good professor and really does care about his students. He is really nice and helpful during office hours, so don't hesitate to go see him! Go to class, read the book, do the chapter questions, go to SI.I got an A in this class. Wish he was teaching 2046!
go to class. read the book. STUDY!!!! he is a good professor. I really wish he was teaching chm 2046. cares about his students and wants you to do well! buy the book, even if it's an old edition.
Not much of a teacher. Has a heavy accent, sitting towards the back it's impossible to understand at least half of what he says. His temper of a five year old made me reconsider taking his class, not surprisingly he was the only one teaching it. I would not recommend taking his class unless you've no other choice.
At all cost AVOID this professor.Tremendously hard to understand his accent.I'm sure he knows his material so if you're great at Chemistry go for it,if you don't remember anything since highschool not a good choice.Tests are difficult. He teaches from his IPad writing notes on the painter's app.Writing is incomprehensible but he gives extra credit!
This prof. is really nice and cares for his students, great teacher. Only problem is his tests will blow you out of the water. Take notes do the book work, try for a B.
If you're good with math and are able to teach yourself well, you'll be good, don't bother even going to class though, he literally just goes by the book. Just make sure you read and study
Really nice professor with a sense of humor, however, his exams are very difficult. There are only 4 grades, which are 4 exams. Study the hw problems in the back of ea chapter. If you want an A, do cumulative hw probems.
He is a very nice professor that cares about whether the students pass or not; BUT his tests are extremely difficult. I personally studied very hard for each one and did not get higher than a C. If taking this class be prepared to teach yourself and study A LOT.
If you want a difficult self taught confusing chem class, he's you're guy. Go for it. If not, DO NOT TAKE HIM. just saying. Test's were impossible. No homework, 3 tests and final are your only grade. No extra credit. If you fail one you're basically toast.
Chemistry is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. He really does care a lot about his students and his grading scale makes it easier to pass his class. You will have a difficult time but if you take initiative and practice problems in your textbook, you'll do fine.
I studied SO hard for this class and ended up with a C. I was almost convinced I was going to fail. The exams ARE your grade, no extra credit, or assignments. Doing problems in book to practice is MANDATORY if you want a C or better. VERY hard exams. Takes hardest problems from book which are HARD. Only simpler problems covered in lecture.
This class is a tough one, unless you're already good at chemistry and are able to teach yourself most of the material. The three tests he gives plus the final are your ENTIRE grade. No extra credit, no curves, no quizzes, etc. Your best bet is to study the HARDEST practice problems from the book and go over your first three tests before the final.
Very easy class. Many people who argue that it is hard, do not study. A lot of the questions on the tests are from the book with different numbers. Just study all the problems in the back and make sure you can solve it fast, then you will receive an A. I made a "D" in Chemistry in High School. In other words, just do what he says and "Study Hard!"
i studied for 2 weeks for test 3 spending 7+ hours in the chem labs going over problems. couldn't even answer half of the problems. he's impossible to understand every test is extremely difficult. the only reason i passed was because he counts a C 60-79. i think i got a 65 in the class.
Tests are VERY hard. has an accent, but it's not too thick. all the slides are posted online, but they don't transfer well and the text is layered and hard to read. only 3 tests and a final make up your grade. and the 3rd test is 2 days before your final.
It is easy to see that Dr. Hernandez really likes chemistry, but if you want to get an A in this class you better put your social and other academic life on hold because his tests are short and difficult. He curves everything except for the A's (75-89% is a B, 60-74% is a C).
Very energetic and exiting teacher, sticks to his guidelines but is very straightforward. Don't expect to get a good grade with 0 effort, but it is not that difficult to pass. Otherwise I had a great time in the class.
Chemistry is a tough class, but Dr. Hernandez really cares about his students. You will have to work to get an A, but he is a very enjoyable professor to have. I recommend him.
Passionate. If I could describe him in one word... like others have said chemistry is tough and you need to do more than memorize. You have to apply yourself, Dr. Hernandez does care for his students and make it easier to pay attention through his energetic personality. I would recommend him!
Hernandez is great. I came in terrified because of these reviews but overall I have zero complaints. The material isn't that bad and he's always willing to help. However you NEED to put the work in. Go to SARC even. You'll get out what you put in
Read the book, understand the concepts and solve as many problems as you can. Understanding and practicing are key. He is good. It's not easy to get an A in his class but if you do, you deserve it.
Dr. Hernandez is a nice guy and give enjoyable lectures. His test can be a bit difficult, but passing should be too hard with diligent study.
Very Hard Tests. On the other hand he was a very approachable professor that was willing to help during office hours. I personally didn't like the grading scale, even though it was a huge curve for a C or a B
Horrible teacher. doesnt even have SI. doesnt help in class and doesnt clarify things. DO NOT Take
Slight accent but you can still understand the professor. Make sure you do practice problems to understand the content. If chemistry is not your thing, this class is rather difficult IMO
His class was one of the hardest I ever took, but that's only because we were required to actually know everything about the subjects and not just enough to get by. So I learned A LOT! Isn't that why we go to college anyway? To learn.. Take him as a professor and you may be stressed but it will absolutely make you the best student you can be!
Only four grades all semester, all tests. He is a good professor and helps out if you ask him about something on his Twitter page. Humorous, open to questions in class, stops and asks if everybody understands after each concept--overall a great professor. Tests are ridiculously short, though, so every point counts. Go to class and study every day.
He is an awful professor, avoid taking him at all costs! He basically reads off a powerpoint the whole time. He doesn't take attendance. Be prepared to teach yourself everything and suffer from ridiculously hard tests that the textbook can't even prepare you for.
Professor is very passionate about what he teaches. He makes it easy for you to understand the concepts. The tests are very hard, be prepared to study very hard.
I definitely recommend you try to find a better professor. This class is sink or swim. If you're not a good test taker, you're going to fail!
Nice and funny, but not the best teacher. No homework or quizzes to check how well you understand the material. You basically teach yourself-- and to be honest, you're your own worst teacher. Would not recommend even though he's pretty funny.
Professor Hernandez's class is extremely hard. There are only 3 tests and a final. Each was about 15 questions. He basically reads off the power point. Avoid this professor!!
Never really attended class, he basically just reads off the powerpoint. The test questions are basically from the book but he makes them much harder and confusing IMO on top of the fact that there are only about 15 questions. Nice guy, tests are too hard and are too easy to screw up is all.
He tried his best to teach everyone but he went to fast. I basically had to teach myself this semester. Youtube videos helped a lot. Definitely need the book. REALLY hard test. He claims he solves the problems on the test and multiplies the time by 5 and that's how he knows how much to put on the test. Good thing is the curve. Saved me big time.
Professor Hernandez truly does care about his students, however, this class is very difficult. If you do the questions in the self assessments, you will do fine on his tests. Don't look for a pattern because they are obscure. I failed the first two tests, but figured out how to study for his class and ended up with a B.
Honestly, try to avoid his class if you can. His class is hard. I put in the work and still didn't do well. He assures you that you can pass if you simply attend class and do the homework yet I still felt like I was drowning, despite studying for hours at home.
Very hard class, his tests were nearly impossible. The book isn't required, but a lot of his questions come from the self tests and practice problems from the book. No homework or attendance though, and he was a funny guy.
It's Chemistry. It's gonna be hard if you're not good with math and critical thinking. However, his tests were extremely manageable. His reviews were super hard but his tests were much easier. Be prepared to work for your grade. I studied hard, but wasn't consistent with doing practice problems and barely got a B.
He is great teacher. Super nice guy. I took chemistry though and the class does take effort. Based on his skills alone he's a great teacher but if you want to pass the class with a good grade you have to put in a decent amount of effort
Professor Hernandez Is one of the best professors that I have ever taking. the tests are a little difficult only if you weren't as prepared as you thought you were! Study hard and you can get an A. He is a Great professor and has no problem staying after with you are helping you in his office. He will go over every test with you if you want!
Hard class, only grades come from exams. Mostly reads off of powerpoints but it's not too bad. If you don't go to class you WILL fail his tests. Exams are pretty hard but not too bad if you study A LOT. Verdict = take CHM with someone else if you don't need it for your major.
Very good professor! Really cares about his students and will go the extra mile to explain something to you. Class is difficult, yet manageable. All of your grades come from the 4 tests, but if you study and do the practice problems at the end of the book you should be fine. Overall great professor and makes this class interesting.
He's a cool guy. Chemistry is a hard subject but if you go to class, do the optional homework, and ask questions its not too difficult. The only thing I didn't like this class was that the final was cumulative, we didn't have a study guide, or even a review day in class. Definitely a teach yourself or get tutored kind of thing.
I really enjoyed professor Hernandez. I have had trouble with chemistry in the past, and this summer, in only 6 weeks, professor Hernandez not only made chemistry easier for me to understand but fun. He's funny, and really cares about his students. All you have to do is go to class, study the textbook, do the problems and you'll get an A.
I really enjoyed professor Hernandez. I have had trouble with chemistry in the past, and this summer, in only 6 weeks, professor Hernandez not only made chemistry easier for me to understand but fun. He's funny, and really cares about his students. To achieve an A you have to go to class, read the textbook, study a lot, and do the problems.
Pay attention to lectures and ask questions if you have them! Professor Hernandez is very helpful and thorough with his lectures. He doesn't assign homework, so it's up to you to check your understanding. Tests are short, so every point is important. I really enjoyed this class.
Professor Hernandez is a good professor. I would definitely take his class again. He cares if you learn and tries to make chemistry understandable. His tests are straightforward and fair. It's up to you put in the work to understand the material but Hernandez helps as much as he can.
Professor Hernandez is an excellent teacher. As an adult in college, be prepared to study and show up to class. His lectures are challenging but insightful. His explanations are genius and his metaphors challenge your perspective on the world. You will learn more than just chemistry with this professor.
First off, I got a C+ in CHM 2040. I was so worried over this class. However, Dr. Hernandez is an amazing teacher. His explanations are very helpful for someone like me, who doesn't understand chemistry naturally. You must show up to class, but he makes it worth it. Read the chapter and STUDY. You will get an A. His extra credit book was great.
Professor Hernandez is very helpful. key: GO TO CLASS. His only grades are the tests, but if you listen to what he emphasizes and do the practice problems you will do fine. I got an A in the class. his exams are not difficult but he wants you to THINK so don't rush. I enjoyed his teacher far more than my previous chem professor.
I'm so glad I took Dr. Hernandez for this class. Chemistry is definitely not my strong subject, but his methods of explaining were very clear, intriguing, visual, and helped me to fully understand the concepts. He's a good lecturer, so make sure you go to class. All it takes to do well in his class is effort on your part.
Dr. Hernandez is an amazing professor who truly is interested in helping his students learn how to think rather than what to memorize; he enjoys making sure you understand why the material is the way it is, rather than stating what to simply memorize. He fit my learning style 100% and I'd recommend him to anyone.
Professor Hernandez is an intelligent man with a lot of passion for the subject. I found him completely credible and always looked forward to attending class. He always delivered lecture with a lot of enthusiasm and was great at making a difficult subject understandable. I would have earned an A if I put more time towards studying!
Dr. Hernandez is one of the best professors i have taken. The material is hard but he gives plenty of examples. He is very passionate about chemistry and is always willing to stay after class to help you for a few extra minutes. Take him if you actually want to learn! He is awesome!!
At first, he comes off as a very serious and "stand-offish" but give it time. His amazing talent of conveying the chemistry knowledge will be obvious very soon. He is truly one of the best professors ever. KEEP your phone away. Practice practice practice the book problems.
Not an easy class, but the teacher does everything he can to help you out. If you study and put in the work you will pass.
Great teacher helps out a lot! Lectures are helpful but if your a self-motivated person then you probably won't need to go to the lectures. Book is unneccesary since the lecture powerpoints (from Google Drive) come from the book directly. Only 4 tests but each test has an extra credit question. Have about 3 weeks between each test.
he has a strong accent, but hes a good teacher
Be for exams you cant possibly get an "A" on. Tests are almost incomprehensible. Our class' third exam had over 50% failure rate so he offered a re-test just to keep his pitiful grade scale "passable" for the college. Spoke with Assoc. Dean about his rudeness and he apparently has a history of a poor grading and a even worse attitude. DO NOT TAKE!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! CHEM 1 isn't hard at all but he makes it that way. Tests are merely impossible to pass. I study all of the hw problems before tests and I still fail. His tests are way harder than they should be for a chem 1 class. Please take my advice.
He's not the best professor. His class is a teach yourself one for sure. When he asks for feedback on what he should change, he gets really offended when people actually answer. Four tests, he drops one, but curves the class heavily. Tests are hard, you definitely have to work your butt off to pass.
DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT take 2040 with Hernandez! he seems like a nice enough person but as a professor he couldn't be worse. He'll spend 20 minutes explaining a concept we've all known since hs and then go through an actual application problem in 10 seconds an not explain anything. You have to teach yourself just to attempt to pass.
Hernandez is HORRIBLE! Do NOT take him if you can help it! You'll wind up having to teach yourself everything because he spends most of his class assuming everyone knows as much as he does about the subject. His favorite phrase is "Easy, right?" - all the while he is laughing at how much his students struggle due to his poor educational style.
Let's face it, gen ed chem 1 is not going to be an easy class. To do well in this class, you are really going to have to want it. I found myself teaching most of the material to myself. READ THE BOOK BEFORE LECTURE. If you do all of the problems by topic in the book, you will find his tests to be very fair (he uses exact questions from textbook).
Hernandez is the best professor you will ever have. Don't expect to go to lecture and absorb the material. Get out that clunky book, try to work out problems and if it's still all confusing, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. In fact, just go to his office regardless, he's the coolest guy and will help you achieve more than an A in chm ib.
Ugh. The amount of work you have to put in for a beginning level chem class is amazing. I've put less effort in high level maths. He is a good professor and he isn't a good professor. My advice is DONT BE AFRAID OF HIM. If you go to office hours or even ask for help on problems after class he WILL help you. Office hours he's nicer. GO!
Hernandez is a terrible communicator, he resorts to almost solely reading off the slides to lecture. He is the of prof that loves to hear himself talk, he loudly and over-emphatically reads every word off of his slides; it's quite a painful experience. He will try to embarrass students during class and will kick you out for using cellphones.
Dr. Hernandez is a great professor. He makes it clear for you to understand, he does have a bit of an but it isn't a great language barrier. He will make you work for your grade, but he is there to help during office hours all the time. Go to the lectures, its worth your time, and do the practice problems in the book and you will do well.
I took this professor for 2040 and again for 2041. His tests are always consistent.
Professor Hernandez is a very intelligent and well-rounded professor. You can tell he is passionate about what he teaches and is always willing to answer questions as well as clarify any confusion. His tests are based on the homework questions and are not that hard if you actually pay attention in class.
In my 13 years of being in school, I've never had a worse professor. 4 exams and that's your grade. No extra credit, no homework, no quizzes. 3 weeks worth of material and the exams are 14-18 questions. He gives zero feedback and no preparation for the exams. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
The people that complain about him should go back to high school, if you READ, go to class, and do the problems from the book, you should be fine! Yes, tests can be hard, because he wants you to think, but he is a great professor and even if he seems scary, go to his office hours and he will be very helpful!
DON'T TAKE HIM! He makes everything over complicated. Even though he tells you to just go over questions in the book they don't help at all! He purposely makes his tests way harder then they have to be which is definitely reflected by his grading scale.
Hernandez is definitely not the best professor to take. His lecture styles are dull and basically reads off his slides. His office hours were no help as he told me to go read the textbook. The day before exams, he provides no preparation or review. His "over compassion" for teaching chemistry does no help for me and many others as we all struggle
4 tests and a final. Hernandez basically just reads off his slides, and talks fast. He does not offer a legitimate review or study guide. He often says "know everything" when you ask what is on the test. One good thing is his grading scale. 100-90 A, 89-75 B, 74-60 C. You will need that scale.
I had Hernandez in the fall for CHM 2040 and he was decent. My final grade in that class was a B. Because of that I took him again in spring for CHM 2041 & that was a big mistake. There are only 4 tests & a final and his tests are difficult. Attendance isn't mandatory because he only reads off slides. If you want to succeed, you must work hard.
I've always been a straight A student and barely passed this guys class. It makes no sense that I can pass anatomy with an A and struggle in this class. The only reason I passed was because of the SI leader who actually made sense of this guy. His accent is annoying and there's no quizzes. Very unclear about test expectations. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
This course is the hardest class I've ever taken, I relied more on Youtube and my textbook than Hernandez and his lectures. Directly read off the slides and overly-dramatic on every concept, taking up time. Doesn't provide answers to HW problems, says if "you feel confident you'll get it right", um no! Life doesn't work like that. GPAs suffer whim
Evil Exams. Taking this class w Hernandez will be on my top list of regrets. Don't bother going to class cause he reads fast off his slides dramatically with an accent. Going to his officer hours he basically helps you by showing you "how to study" (basically read the book in his office). Grade Scale is adjusted for lack of success in this class.
Hernandez is the worst professor I've ever had. He is overly dramatic when lecturing and reads directly off the slides. He gives you the powerpoints so attendance is nonmandatory. The only good thing about this class is the grading scale: a 60% is a C, a 75% is a B, etc. You will certainly need that scale. Hardest class I've ever taken.
Worst professor ever. You can barely understand him during lectures because of his accent and he is too dramatic. Reads off the slides but he reads them quickly so taking notes on a computer or writing them is nearly impossible. The tests questions are from the practice problems at the end of each chapter but he changes them a little
I absolutely hated this professor. He was terrible, he never helps & is hard to understand. The slides are literally from the book & he reads directly off them. His tests are so difficult and seem like they're 10x harder than what he "taught". If you can avoid him, do it. I got a B in this class but that was the hardest thing I've ever done.
Very good professor, he makes you learn the information rather than memorize the information and his style of teaching is very motivational and encouraging. You wont get an easy A but if you work for it the test won't cheat you out of your grade because they are more than fair.
Hernandez wants you to learn rather than to memorize. If you had any questions his office hours were mostly helpful. Biggest recommendation is to practice the problems from the end of the chapter in your textbook. If you are comfortable with those problems there is no reason you shouldn't get at least a B on your tests. You have to work for an A
Professor Hernandez is a very good teacher. His main point that he wants his students to learn in the semester is to actually learn the concepts and material rather than just memorize it. If you actually go to his lectures, do the review problems at the end of the chapter, and just put in some work then it's very easy to pass this class.
Hernandez is by far one of the best professors I've had at UCF. He knows exactly how to teach concepts in a way that helps you feel confident about the information without having to memorize it. If you do your part by reading before class and study hard it will definitely pay off in the test which are only 20 straight-forward type questions.
He knows the material well and explains it pretty clearly, however he goes through the material quickly. Only 4 exams and 1 final, no other grades. So you have to make sure to study. SI sessions twice a week and recommended. Doesn't like to repeat himself. Studying is the key to passing. Hates cell phones and makes you leave class if your on it
Loved taking this class. Professor Hernandez hates cell phones, so make sure yours is on silent and put away or he'll kick you out of class. Three tests, around 15 questions in total & Final Exam (cumulative). No homework graded but I'd suggest to at least look over and do some practice problems beforehand. Funny, jokes a lot in lecture.
Do not take if you have the choice. Unless you already get chemistry, your not going to learn much from him. He expects those who have doubts to ask questions but ends up insulting those or simply telling them to pay attention. Not worth. And don't even think about pulling out your phone, no joke.
Dr Hernandez wants you to THINK not memorize, having said that some of the test questions are harder (trickier) than others, he seems a bit moody and despondent sometimes (picking up test at the last minute? Good luck). Overall a good teacher, chemistry is just hard.
No homework, just 4 tests. And if you ask for a study guide he'll tell you all the problems in the book are your study guide which comes out to 150+ problems per chapter. He just sees chemistry as being really easy so its should be easy for his students to understand. Overall he's not that helpful. Would rather transfer colleges to take chemistry
Do not take this class. Take as a transient student. Reads off powepoints. Lots of memorization- even though prof. says otherwise. Difficult to understand & talks VERY fast. No phones. Lectures you on how to be an adult. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Hernandez is a pretty good teacher. Most of the things he teaches are pretty clear in my opinion. To get an A you need to do every problem at the ends of the chapters as most of the test questions are based on those and GO TO CLASS. Just like in life if you want to be successful in this class you just need to work hard.
I thought he was a great teacher, ALL OF THE NOTES AND LECTURES ARE ONLINE so you all you have to do is go to the lectures and pay attention, and the material WILL make sense. He is upfront about his grading and testing style. He gives 3 tests, & a final, and the final replaces your worst grade. As long as you study & try its impossible to fail.
I strongly believe he is a great teacher, he follows the syllabus and gives you all the powerpoints of the chapters and assignments to help you study before you even start class. All you have to do is pay attention in class, if he says something is important it is, make note of it. Great Professor and is always willing to help in office hours.
Don't text in his class you will get thrown out. Other than that Doctor Hernandez is a great professorm he knows what he is talking about and hw ould gladly explain you anything in his office hours. Do ythe problems he assigns as practice for the test, study HARD, and when ever he says something its important it is comming on the test so study it.
Professor Hernandez is very passionate about Chemistry he isn't a bad teacher at all this course is hard for students who are bad test takers because that is the only grade for the class. I enjoyed class, studied, went to SI and didn't pass his class because I am a horrible test taker. If you are a good test taker take his class. If not don't.
Doctor Hernandez is probably one of the best professor i ever had. The class will be hard if you do not study, but if you study and go to class like you supposed to you'll do fine. one thing about the class is that the grade is based on 4 exams and if your not good at taking exams don't take the class, but other than that this class was great.
Absolutely no cell phones in class. Your grade is made up of only 3 tests and a final (which replaces your lowest test score). There are no quizzes or homework. His tests are partially all math equations; he doesn't test much on concepts. He provides all of his powerpoints online. He seems like a strict professor, but he's actually really funny.
DR. Hernandez is a great professor and takes the time to teach you if necessary and really cares for his students understanding. He is a lot nicer in person so go to his office. The class is tough but chemistry is a tough subject. Many of his questions come from the book so do them all. Theres only 4 tests. Hell try to trick you know your material.
He's hard and you will have to do the assigned problems, but he prepares you the best so if you want an easy chem grade go somewhere else. Kind of a jerk but he's good at what he does and people are too soft. Taking him again for 1b
It is not an easy class especially if you haven't taken chemistry before like me. There are 3 tests and a final and each test is worth more than the last. He gave two extra questions on the final. But the final was easy and I got a 95% which replaced by lowest exam score of a 66%. If you just study the previous exams you will get an A on the final
Dr. Hernandez wants the students to understand the concepts of Chemistry. The tests in his class are pretty straight forward, all of the material is covered in his power points but reading the book gets you further in the class. Some of the questions on his exam come directly from the practice quizzes in the textbook! Final replaces lowest score!
Dr. Hernandez is very knowledgeable about Chemistry and tries to pass on his passion for it, however, he has a strong accent and talks rapidly, so he's very hard to follow sometimes. Doesn't post lectures online and expects you to read the book. If you've taken Chem in High School and attend class, you'll do ok. No homework, only 4 tests.
Dr. Hernandez is a good, knowledgeable teacher, but sometimes he does not explain concepts well. His tests are all applied knowledge questions and don't include conceptual questions, which makes them challenging. You should attend class even though you don't have to and make sure to study and read for the tests.
Dr. Hernandez does not give a lot of work. There are only 3 tests and the final exam. While some students may like this it is horrible for your grade. The tests are short but difficult. I went to his office several times for help, but really did not receive much help. If you miss class you will be very confused.
Had him for Chem 1A, grades were composed of 3 tests and the final. If you go to class the information becomes much clearer and he goes over questions in class that are similar to the test. He isn't specific in what you need to know, but for Chem that pays off in the long haul. Need the textbook for studying purposes
Not much homework, puts notes online, and always helpful.
Lectures didn't help me much but if you do questions at the end of each chapter you should be good. Tests are all math and some are identical from math problems from the slide and review questions in the book
His accent can be difficult to understand and he would talk too fast at times. He gives very short but difficult multiple choice tests meaning less room for errors and they are the only grades for the class. No homework but I recommend doing the problems in the textbook for study help as there are some test questions based off them.
Hernandez as a person seems like a cool guy, but as a teacher, lets be honest, its not his strong suit. When it comes to being engaging during lectures or making you want to be bright eyed and bushy tailed, he lacks. His tests are confusing. His accent takes some getting used to. And he's not real understanding. Also, he's like a phone policeman...
Goes fast on material. Ask a question-he will have a classmate answer you or make you come up with it. Don't like that. B is 75-89, which rewards slackers-someone with a 75 gets the same grade as an 89. Only 4 exams and final, making it incredibly hard to get an A. Loves critical thinking so makes tests hard, grade suffers. Avoid if you want an A.
No homework, just study notes/book very well, attend lectures, and do practice problems to do well in class! Grade is composed solely of tests, for which he has a generous curve. Final exam score can replace lowes test score.
READ the chapter, do the practice problems, take the assessment quiz, go over the conceptual questions, go to class. The A's that I got on exams resulted from me doing this. He takes his test questions right from the book. Less than 2% away from an A in this class; it is challenging but if you do well, you know you understand it. Funny.
I took two classes with Dr. Hernandez, CHM 2040 and CHM 2041 and with hard work and determination I did very well in those classes. Dr. Hernandez is a challenging professor but is fair and you get the grade you worked for. He is funny and his classes are not boring. Read the book, go to class and you will be fine.
If you are new to chemistry and looking for an easy understanding, I would not recommend this class. Your grade will depend on four test grades. The test questions are based off the harder, more advanced questions in the back of each chapter in the book. He also makes each answer question very similar making it harder to distinguish.
easy class if you test well. 4 tests and a final, questions are from chapter readings and back of book, usually 20 questions, 15 which are easy 5 which are conceptual and a little tough. professor is very intelligent but arrogant and sucks himself off often. Just study "everything" as he says and you'll be fine.
Professor Hernandez is a great professor, he is passionate about what he teaches and makes the class fun and interesting. i took 2040 and 2041 with him and i would take him again, he challenges you but doesn't test you on something he didn't teach or not in the book. He really cares about his students and try to make sure that they understand.
Very passionate professor. Ask for help, he'll give you help. He has humor, and he respects his students. Great guy. His tests though are very hard. Even if you study super hard, some questions will trip you up. A lot of questions are cumulative, some are very abstract. I feel like there are easier profs out there. I wish you all luck!
Professor Hernandez really loves chemistry and he puts a lot of effort into his lectures. He can come off as ignorant sometimes, but he knows what he's talking about. Don't even try to touch your phone while in his class or he'll call you out. Tests are fair, usually 20 questions, make sure you study the slides and go to his office hours.
I absolutely loved his class. I have taken seven levels of chemistry classes, and he was my favorite professor of all. He truly loves what he does and wants his students to succeed. I always looked forward to his class. Also, he had an easy final and gave extra credit. He's a pretty neat guy.
If you have only him available for your chemistry, don't take chemistry yet. 15 question tests, half are troll questions, not even math based besides 3. The clicker is free response and a-f answers, only open for 30-45 seconds which is not enough time to set up a math Q, or connect to the internet. Kicks you out of lecture if you take pictures.
This man has the audacity to A.) schedule a "make or break" test the day after spring break and B.) tells us the results the FINAL DAY OF WITHDRAWAL. I studied and went to as many SI sessions as I physically could but I'm still on the pass/fail line. One thing I will say is some people actually enjoy his confusing teaching style.
Never take this professor. His lectures are confusing and not worth going to, but you have to do the learning catalytics so its best to go to class to get those 5 extra points He doesn't care about how you are doing in class, he is rude and disrespectful to students and if you leave early he will call you out. Tests are hard. Class is hard.
DO NOT TAKE. This teacher rushes through his 100-slide powerpoint. He fails to explain the concepts we are supposed to be learning and expects us to have a thorough understanding beforehand. He does learning catalytics for participation points, but refuses to provide us with the correct answer, because "we should know it." Also, will call you out!!
Do NNNNOOOTTTTT take him!!! He just is not a good professor, he really can't teach. I couldn't understand how he talked. His accent, combined with his tone was very hard .. I basically didn't learn anything going to class. He rushes through his 100+ slides, and doesn't teach anything on them. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE! Trust me.
Lectures are fast and unclear , the way he speaks and his accent make it harder. He couldn't care less about whether you understand or your success in the class. Only grades tests that are from 12 to 20 questions so if you miss 3 you or 4 questions you cant pass. Basically taught ourselves because "we should know it" according to him.
He's not as bad as everyone on here is saying. If you thought Chem 1a was easy then you will do fine. His class was honestly just about understanding the material. Know your stuff and you'll do good on the tests. My suggestion is to go to SI reviews, KNOW the power points, read the book, and do the assigned problems he gives out.
Grades based on 4 tests and the final, 15-20 questions each. He showed us grade curves after each exam and was proud of how few A's and B's there were. Very bad lectures, and unclear tests. Completely inaccessible outside of class. I've taken multiple chem and physics classes and this class was still hard. Do not take him.
He isn't that bad if you apply yourself. Listen during lectures, read the chapters, go to SI, do the practice problems. You actually have to understand the material if you want to pass. It is a hard class but you will pass if you put in work. A 75% is a B which really helps.
Please do not take this class. I really worked my butt off just to get a B in his class but the final was extremely difficult, I was in complete shock. It brought me down to a C. If you just want to take this class to pass, take this class. The final was not what he said it would be on. You'll be disappointed like me.
This is a VERY hard class to get an A in. I had a high A in chem 1A and ended up getting a B in this class even though I studied a TON. Tests consist of 15-20 tricky questions. He flew through 100+ powerpoint slides and his accent was very difficult to understand.
Not easy to approach and even the SI advisors agree he is one of the hardest chemistry teachers. The grade is based on 3 tests and in-class questions that are only 5 points in the gradebook. Exam grade averages are usually C's or D's. All information is based on his hard to understand lectures. Don't take unless you already know the materials.
He does not bother to simplify anything, I had to rely on SI sessions to learn the material. He's also very rude to students over small issues. He told the entire class our final would be one thing and gave us something completely different.
Rude and unapproachable. Difficult to understand and teaches as if he is talking to a colleague that already understands everything. Lied to his entire class about what would be on the final and when I approached him about it he said that he did it on purpose. Lost my bright futures because of him and I have never gotten below a C in my life.
GREAT PROFESSOR!!! I am so glad I took him for my Chem 1 B class. He was a great professor. Taught me a lot in the class. I really like his teaching style.
took Chem1B in summer B. Professor Hernandez did a great job explaining the material. The class is lecture heavy and you may have to read the textbook for better understanding. Study a lot of the practice problems and It'll be fine.
I didn't like the class because the only grades you get are the four tests. But, his powerpoints are very clear about what will be on the tests. Study his examples and book problems he assigns and you'll be golden. I suck at chem and did good. He said final would be cumulative but heavy on one chapter, ended up all being that chapter. Didn't lie
Worst professor I have taken. Does not know how to teach and makes tests way harder than the practice problems he provides. The only grades for the whole semester are four lecture exams and the final exam.
The only grades in his class are 5 tests, with the final replacing the lowest grade of the other 4 tests. Hes a nice guy and all, but hell put things on his tests that he didnt tell you to study. His lectures are just him reading off of slides he posts online, so you get no use out of waking up to go to them. He tests patience, not knowledge.
This class grade is only based on test grades. There is no extra credit or any other assignments. I went to every lecture, studied all the material he recommended, and took detailed notes but still couldnt get good grades on the tests. He tells you what problems to study and does review but then the test looks completely different.
Terrible professor
Your first two test shouldnt be too bad, theyre easy As but after that the test takes a turn for the worst and progressively gets harder. The fourth one is probably the worst. He goes to fast with slides in class so youre forced to use your phone to follow. Each test is basically 2-3 test worth of material crammed into one. Dont Take Class!!!
He's the worst professor at UCF. He doesn't assign any homework or classwork to help boost up your grade. He only assigned 4 exams and a final. His tests are tricky and confusing and the optional practice problems he assigns have little to do with what was on the test, especially test 4 which more than half the class failed. DON'T TAKE HIM!
he is a fairly good teacher. The only thing is that he teaches as if you already know the subject, so definitely read before class. I hate the fact that your total grade is based off of only 5 tests!! don't take him if you're a bad test taker. He's nice but expects you to already know the concepts. his tests are very confusing
Mr Florencio was not there when I needed him. Claimed the heart of chemistry was love, but taught only loneliness and depression.
Sends out reviews to do, nothing like test, sends out practice problems from the book, nothing like the test. Might as well not have sent us anything. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Worst experience of my life. Cannot describe how I felt leaving that class after every exam day. Struggled the entire year and no extra credit was offered. Based off of 5 test
He is very unapproachable. If you have no background of chemistry already, this professor is not for you. He moves very fast and does not explain the material well. Not to mention your entire grade is based off of 4 exams and a final.
Professor Hernandez was not the professor best professor. This class is basically all self taught and going to lectures doesn't help usually. Recommend if you take him to attend SI sessions and do problems from the book. He will not be teaching instead he will be reading off of power point slides. Only grades are 5 tests. Good luck you'll need it.
He is very inconsiderate of students. Very rude and over the top. Lectures are lackluster at best. His grading criteria is lenient but because he sets you up to fail from the beginning. His exam wording is extremely different from practice questions he says we should go over and we should be fine for the test. Awful!
Professor Hernandez is a great professor. The class itself is difficult. The only grades are test grades, but he replaces your lowest score with what you score on the final, that was great. Its vital that you do as many practice problems in the book as you can, thats how to pass chem. You have to practice. Good professor though, nice and helpful.
Your grade is solely based on 4 tests and the final and his lectures are very difficult to follow. He didn't really seem to care much about the students honestly. Rather than trying to help us understand the material, he blames us for "not studying enough". Don't take his class.
Your grade is made up of 4 unit exams and 1 final. All exams are multiple choice, no extra credit. His lectures are good but you need to do all of the practice questions in the chapter to be prepared for exams. If you struggle with chemistry and are not good at teaching yourself, I would find another professor.
Your grade for this class is based off of 4 exams and your final. He does not drop the lowest exam grade, nor does he give extra credit. I would highly recommend NOT taking his class. But if it is your last resort, you should go to lectures and also do all the questions in the textbook. Good luck.
4 midterm exams, 1 final. If you're a STEM major & are good at chem, take him bc the course layout will prep you for harder chem classes that you'll need (chem 2, organic, etc). If you're just trying to fulfill a GEP/you aren't good at chem/you're a bad test taker, don't take him b/c there are no "buffer grades" (quizzes, hw, iClicker, Aleks).
Reviews and material given to study for tests was usually not what was on the test, or the examples on the test were much more in depth
This class is terrible. Everything is unnecessarily hard. I had a 98 the first portion of this class and Im barely getting a C this semester. Do NOT take this class. This experience has been the most stressful experience of my academic career.
I would not recommend taking this class if you want to keep a good gpa. When the semester first begun, I thought the review that was provided plus notes were going to be helpful. wrong. The tests and review didn't match. I started going to SI, sarc & doing every. practice. problem in the back of the book and managed to get a good grade on the exams
this class was not easy at all. i went to ALL the lectures and i am barely passing the class with the grade i wanted. he goes too fast on the slides as well. he isnt a bad professor though, just not the best. good thing is he replaces your lowest score on an exam with your final (if you scored higher).
The class isn't easy to begin with and it doesn't help that the professor takes pride in people struggling in the course. Lectures move very fast and questions are usually met with an accusation instead of an answer. The entire grade is based off 5 very hard 20 question tests. Chances are he'll read this and brag about it to his class next semester
Four tests and a final are the only grades offered in this course. You will have to study a lot to do well. Prof. Hernandez is very knowledgeable about chemistry but sometimes it is hard to understand him.
Class is based on 4 exams and a final. Most questions are fair, but there are usually 2-4 questions that are difficult, which determine your A or B. Final is not cumulative or the ACS exam; however, it had the lowest average. It does replace your lowest exam. No curves. No extra credit. Form study groups. Be ready to go over lots of information.
All his tests were information given on his powerpoints. All i studied were his powerpoints and ended with a B. Very fair with the tests, easy test questions, but they are 20 questions. Focus on powerpoints, he likes coneptial questions more than the actual math questions. Explains really well the powerpoints in class, so go to class. 75-89 is a B.
