incredible lecturer. seriously, we applauded after almost every class. labs are hard, but awesome review sessions
If youre not in his section, go to his lectures anyways. Best 115 prof by far.
Looks like Neo, teaches like Morpheus...
i have to honestly say prof leung is one of the most interesting speakers i've run across at UW. the way he manages to tie everything together and talk about art and languages is amazing Plus he's kinda hot!
Somewhat cute, fairly generous, and totally brilliant
This guy is amazing
Awesome prof ;P.. very clear and helpful. He is really wanting to help his students.
Makes math poetic and students swoon. Pretty tough assigments but its all good. FSL!FSL!
Prof. Leung is an interesting lecturer who enjoys professing about math. However, sometimes in his blaze of glory he'll leave the entire class stunned with the beauty, and they won't have learned anything. If you're very interested, take this guy. If you're only taking the course because you have to, you might want to take another prof.
this is the best pro i've ever met!not only math in his class, but also philosophy, music, and history!going to his class is totally the most enjoyable thing to me!awesome guy!u can't miss him!
Incredible. He is also a pianist!!!
This guy is awesome! He makes linear algebra fun and interesting. He always brings philosophy or literature into his discussions as well. Very nice guy, very helpful. He goes above and beyond the course material.
FSL is the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are florid and peppered with culture. I hope that UW can recuit more like FSL! It's too bad he's only visiting (for now).
Outstanding professor and a superb course. It's almost a shame that I'm in engineering, or I might have gotten him again.
The perfect prof....
Gave just a few lectures while our regular prof was away but I was really impressed. Organized, knew what he was doing and you can tell he's passionate about math. Impressive. Not bad on the eyes either ;)
I LOVE HIM!!!!!!!! He knows math extremly well, he is a nice person, he is funny. OMG!!!! unfortuantely he is not teaching math235...
Superb speaker! His lectures are just awesome. I would go to his class just to listen to his metaphors. Assignments are very difficult and whenever I finish one, I always feel I have accomplished something big.. Extremely helpful prof. I don't really like Linear Algebra and I guess I wouldn't work as hard if he isn't the prof. I love FSL!
Holy Crab....Why he isn't teaching math235 this term???After studying in his class,u gonna feel all other instructors suck...i am serious...that's exactly what my feeling is...
He doesn't prepare for the lecture sometimes and he'll tell you when he come in to the class that's when you know today?s lecture will be terrible. He also uses complicated examples to explain easy things. Think by yourself first then go back to he?s example it'll be much easier (at least that what I found).
Don?t be afraid of ask him to rapid or explain, even though he will say something mean back at you but just laugh it off he doesn?t really mean it (I think it?s just his nature). Over all his a nice prof. If you still have difficulty, ask him right after class or during his office hour are also good ideas.
Dr. Leung is a very skilled professor. His style is pretty "high" though, and people who just want to get it over with probably should take someone else. But if you have any interest at all he is amazing (and the philosophy makes sense!!)
Im surprised no ones mentioned the challenge questions or is that new? The man gives prizes. Nuff said XD
Leung Fok-Shuen is a very clear very profound speaker. He will ask you questions which is nerve racking but he is nice. Other profs are easier but with Fok-Shuen your mark will be higher at the end probably.
Trust us, you won't hear Langston Hughes in another math class. LOVE him.
He is everything a professor should be.....
An intellectual sophisticate. I'm mesmerized...
I am so impressed. Leung is not easy, definitely not especially on assignments, but this is more than made up by his eloquence and helpfulness. Go somewhere else if you want an easy ride...take Leung if you want to be taught by the master!
The best professor I've ever had. Hard but helpful. Does not dumb things down like other professors (you know it) but challenges you. All around amazing!
Concluding Math 136 has been painful. But not as painful as sitting on this term's Math 235 class. I don't believe I would ever come across any professor as good as Dr. Fok-Shuen Leung. To anyone who is in his class at the moment, make the most of it. Don't miss any of his class and go to his office hours when you can.
Highly competent, friendly, and actually pretty humorous in a dry way... Makes class interesting and worth going to... Young, but it does not show in his ability...
Overall He Is Just Awesome. Good Teacher With A Good Sense of Humour!
hard assignments, very helpful, somewhat sarcastic, sharp dresser, pretty much the bomb. ;(
I was having personal difficulties when I took linear algebra with Dr. Leung, and he was really understanding. He can be ironic in class but in person he is very good to us students. Yes he is a great teacher but he is also a good person. Take him if you can.
Admittedly, he is a good professor, a smart guy, and an easy marker. Although his assignments are unique and harder than other class, they are extremely helpful for your exams. However, his Lectures are really hard to understand to most of people so that the attendance vastly falls. Even there is no formal examples in his lectures -- it is horrible
QUALITY
unique assignment, humour, fast pace, choose him if you're confident about your level
Great professor. He goes fast sometimes but asks alot of questions. Most of all, interested and interesting. Poetic lectures I would say. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE.
He is an amazing professor, and one of a kind type of a person. Even though he often likes to use hard stuff to challenge your mind, but let's face it, it's for our own good! He is responsible, humourous, very young but of very deep and broad knowledge. Too bad University of Waterloo is loosing him...He is going to other university permanently.. :(
Hilarious, and an amazing professor. Keeps you interested, gives excellent lecture material.
Superb .... I doubt I'll ever have a better teacher. Dr. Leung is exactly what I expected University to be like. He goes fast, and truth be told could give more examples, but clear and has a fantastic way of lecturing. I actually got choked up during his last lecture at UW :( Amazing.
Without a doubt one of my absolutely best professors in my entire undergrad career at UWaterloo. Very engaging lectures, makes a very strong (and successful) attempt to learn everyone's name, and is amazingly helpful. Relates math to many other disciplines with interesting examples. If you can, take any class he teaches. I'm going to miss him here.
Absolutely the best prof I've had! Classes are entertaining and challenging. Even though I wasn't too interested in the material to begin with, he made it interesting. I'm going to miss group theory :'( ...
Astounding. Really, really astounding. The textbook for this class is horrible, but the professor is amazing. A true gentleman scholar.
Definitely the most interesting prof I've had yet.
a smart and nice guy, so young and so successful, i am sad that waterloo is losing him, i wonder if he will ever come back?? J
Awesome prof. Love his analogies. Keeps it interesting. He is just cool.
"Your high school teachers will tell you there's no such things as stupid questions. You and I know better."
I know its only a couple weeks in, but he has got his s--- together. Simply put, amazing. Smart, funny, goodlooking in a kinda nerdy way, and, by far the smoothest prof I have. Also helpful . He may actually make me like math =)
Inspirational.
Well that was a hard exam. In assignments and lectures he isn't easy but in person he's actually a really helpful, kind (sweet?) person. But he writes too fast!
Great guy, and a fun class.
Prof Leung is very nice in person. Yet his lectures are often difficult to follow and assignment questions are extremely difficult that no students can do them by themselves. (Need to get help from Math students)
agree that his assignments are way too hard, but he is a good teacher in addition to being so helpful ... and somewhat good looking
Love him. Hate his assignments.
Best math prof I've ever had. Extremely knowledgeable about the topic. Even his "improvised" lectures are killer :) He also has an awesome sense of humor, and makes math exciting!
A poet of symbols - a magician of numbers.
One of the best profs I have ever had.
Amazing prof!!! Never had a prof as passionate about his subject and as helpful as Fok is. His lectures are interesting. Sophisticated humor adds to his intellect and expertise.
He is a really special prof, take him if you can.
This man made me actually enjoy waking up at 5:30AM to get to an 8:00AM math lecture 3 times a week. Very slick, always comes up with witty comments, and a great sense of humour. He's also a great professor and his teaching is quite clear.
Fok-Shuen Leung made my 1B semester! Awesome prof! BTW, he also has a fan page on Facebook, which he updates regularly :D
GREAT!!
Cool and confident; a great professor.
One word, Excellent. If you have a chance to take one of his classes, DO SO. Assignments are a bit hard but if you go to math tutoring center you'll be fine. Also, he does help you a lot if you go and ask for help during office hours. The assignments are hard so that the exam will be easy if your practice is more than enough.
An absolutely inspirational professor. Hard assignments, but hilariously entertaining classes. Highly recommended. I would definitely take his classes again.
Simply inspiring. Assignments may not be easy, but if you go to him for help, you'll learn a lot.
Incredible in every way..... really challenging assignments but he does know what he's doing and everyone wins in the end. Forget "smart is the new sexy", sexy is the new sexy.
Something posted on his FB fan page (yes he has one): The union of the mathematician with the poet, / fervor with measure, / passion with correctness, / this surely is the ideal.
He's BIBLICAL... makes me want to optimize my differential
A hard prof but explains things extremely well. So intellectual. A wonderful sense of humour, often makes references/allusions in class that go over most people's heads. Don't be afraid to talk to him outside of class.
Prior to this class, Math was my nemesis. Now having finished this course with a passing grade, I must commend a great deal to Prof FSL. He really motivates the class, weekly assignments are difficult and require a lot of effort, but undoubtedly help you in the final exam.GREAT prof, LOVE when he goes off on a tangent talking about Greek philosoph
Easily the best professor at UBC. Demands attendance and completion of assignments, so plan on budgeting 1.5hrs of homework for every hour of class in addition to the the time you spend in class. Lectures are very, very good.
Extremely helpful, don't be afraid to go to his office hours. A very motivating teacher. Attentance will pay off, because he remembers people well and if you give him a good impression (regardless of whether or not you are smart), he will be happy to help you no matter what. he's a must-take!
Amazing! Brilliant and really helpful! He made me realize where my real problems in math were and helped me work on them. His more than a math prof, he is a educator of the mind. Take him by all means! Office Hours are super helpful!
Great Prof! The only mistake I made was not going his Office Hours more often. If you go to those and do your homework weekly this course is an easy A.
nice prof BUT his exams are extremely difficult don't take this class if you are not naturally good in Maths
It feels bizarre to comment on Professor Leung´s homework and exams...as challenging as they are. He is just not like other professors, he makes his subject necessary and inspirational. Don´t sign up if you don´t work hard but if you are willing to it is possibly career changing. The best teacher I´ve had and not just at university.
Amazing. He made me look forward to math class. Going to his office hours was fun too. He's pretty laid back, but you really have to get used to his style and not be intimidated of this math god to talk to him. He's fun and high-spirited, but his tests and assignments are quite difficult. Not an easy class, but an inspirational one.
Clear, poetic and really helpful. Respectful but definitely challenging. He has a magnetic charisma. I think I'm in love lol.....
I'm IN LOVE.
Simply amazing. Like people have said, FSL's assignments can be extremely difficult (you know who you are, Part C) but he is extremely helpful in office hours. The lectures are very, very nice. He is popular for a reason!
This guy is so awesomely clear and helpful. He may seem intimidating, but he's actually really nice. He's also really funny and dresses like a CK model.
HE'S TURNING ME GAY! BEST PROF FROM 8AM TO 9AM! IF IT WASNT FOR HIM, NO WAY IN HELL AM I WAKING UP AT 6:30 EVERYDAY TO BUS TO THIS GARBAGE OF A SCHOOL.
Gives breathtaking and breathtakingly fast lectures. You don't have a prayer of keeping up unless you work a LOT, but the material can be amazing. Demands a lot yet gives a lot. Stylish.
"The voyage is a long one, full of adventure, full of discovery." This is a wonderful, humorous, deep class.
Sometimes I want to fail, just so I can take this course with him again! Simply brilliant and by far the best Prof I've ever had.
Can keep me awake at an 8am class without my first cup of coffee, thats how good he is. Brilliant teacher, gripping, gets his material through and the most motivating professor i have ever had the chance to work with. He makes people who can't add 2 and 2 believe in themselves and believe that they can do calculus. Absolutely amazing guy!
This guy is truly epic. So funny, smart, interesting, clear, helpful, well-dressed, tall, handsome, attractive....etc.
This is an extremely challenging class with homework containing difficult material. But it is my most interesting and satisfying class too. And FSL is just a charming, fascinating guy.
Fok is just the best of a great group of Scie 1 profs. His lectures are always polished, sophisticated and fun, and he is always very helpful. Zero God FTW.
Fok is a very intelligent person and makes a lot of clever remarks at his students that can be funny but disrespectful. He is a great teacher and he definitely made me a lot more interested in math.
Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth but supreme beauty. Fok makes you realize it.
Amazing, amazing professor who genuinely cares about his students. Lectures are classical and frankly sublime. Be prepared to be called upon.
Cool dude. Still visit him sometimes.
He is an amazing professor. He actually cares about his students. He provides a lot of assignment which would seem annoying but are actually helpful. He's also hilarious !
Going into my third year now and this is still the best prof I have had so far. Makes class genuinely interesting, (on that note, make sure to actually attend, it's crazy important, and he's not above randomly taking marks away if you are habitually absent. )
Great teacher, really loves math and inspires you to like it too. Exams and assignments are pretty difficult.
I'm not a surfer dude, and don't sit in the back row
I never did breathe its pure serene / Till I heard Fok speak out loud and bold / Then felt I like some watcher of the skies / When a new planet swims into her ken
Amazing teacher, take a class with him if you can you won?t regret it in the end.
Before starting UBC, the last time that I remember math not being a huge burden to me was probably grade. Since starting this man's class, it's become one of my favourite subjects. Nuff said.
It is not until you encounter your classes in second year that you realize really how skilled Fok is. He demands new ways of thinking as well as serious commitment levels...but man is it worth it. Highly recommended and missed.
This guy is a boss. 10/10 on intensity and cool. Lots of people from other sections seem to come to his class as well.
Who knew that math was a mode of philosophical inquiry?
Definitely a master of his art- passionate, knowledgable, clear, but albeit very difficult. His class is definitely not easy to take, don't be fooled by the whole "Math 110 is the easy math," because it isn't. He demands a whole different level of and style of mathematical thinking. Very patient, but also challenging.
Wasn't happy with the course throughout the year, but looking back, I am very happy to have had FSL as an instructor. He is much better than other profs for the course. If you must take MATH 110, take it with FSL. Class average 61%.
Academically, extremely demanding and rigorous. Incredibly difficult exams except for the last one. Personally, one of the nicest guys around. Fok "makes" the program!
Fok truly cares about his students, not just about how they're doing in math but everything else as well. I'm touched by his willingness to help. He is really smart and it could feel overwhelming talking to him sometimes because he knows so much and can turn a conversation to things like literature and arts. He's a really cool prof!
Old school, generous with his time and passionate about the subject. My only complaint is with the textbook, but FSL is magic. Well worth taking!
If you have to take Math 110- absolutely have to. Take it with Fok. This class is hard as balls, but he understands and the chances of you failing are very slim. (I walked away with 65 after failing both midterms and the final). Make sure you go to the Tutorials because they're free marks!!!
OMG! HE IS GREAT! Amazing teacher and very thoughtful! Always willing to help you with math problems and life in general! cool guy :) He rides a motorcycle too!I felt like I actually understood math.
Amazing prof. He really encourages you to work hard and try your best. He believes in his students and is very generous with his time. The homework is really challenging, and definitely not like anything I've seen in highschool math. If you don't walk out of this with a good grade, you will definitely develop a good work ethic at the very least.
If you have to take math 110, pick FSL! Even though his classes are at 8, he is interesting and keeps the class engaged. Regular assignments made good study habits and his tests were fair. Course evaluations are spread widely amongst course work (free workshop marks!!!)
Loved Fok. Don't be fooled by the intimidating vibes he gives off. He's one of the nicest, friendliest, funniest, smartest guys around and truly cares about his students. Approach him, get to know him, you won't regret it. In class, sit in the front so you can hear the funny stuff he says. Rigorous, demanding, but awesome prof.
Definitely my favourite prof all year. Didn't even matter that math was one of my most hated subjects; he made the lectures interesting with his quirky personality and all his wonderful quotable sayings. He is very personable, and despite his busy schedule, doesn't mind taking the time to give his students one-on-one help. Highly recommended!
BEST PROF I'VE EVER HAD! :D FOK IS AMAZING! YOU HAVE TO TAKE A COURSE WITH HIM
Best prof I've ever had. Sit at the front and participate. You can not coast through this class. The assignments are hard but worth it. Also keep a seprate page just to write down the funny things he says throughout class. 100% worth coming in at 8am on a monday and I dont make that statement lightly
Great prof, interesting to talk to. Lectures are a bit spontaneous given the freedom the profs have in Sci1, so definitely make sure you understand everything covered by talking to him if necessary. Homework is much more difficult than exams, which are straight-forward if you're calm.
If you like vague instructions and back breaking work load then this is the prof for you.
THE BEST PROF I'VE EVER HAD!!! Very helpful in both class and office hours! He has an awesome sense of humor and is extremely intelligent!!
Fok has to be my favourite teacher of all time. Material is difficult, but it is definitely do-able if you work hard! Go to office hours and get to know him-he's a super interesting and caring guy! Oh and write down all the funny things he says in lecture. Term 2 has barely started, but I already know I'm going to miss his class.
So interesting and charismatic. Homework is extremely difficult at times, but very worthwhile. Lectures are amazing. Office hours could be about anything from delta epsilon to Wittgenstein. It is so hard to imagine Science One without Fok!!
Very helpful and interesting if you work hard but can be quite unfriendly if you do not work hard! Latex homework is very difficult.
Fok was so loved by the class that we even have a document of his quotes. He is extremely supportive and takes the time and effort to make class engaging. Also made a math scavenger hunt once in tutorial - the class ran around campus finding his math questions :D
Very very tough prof.
Great!
Fok appears to be really strict and tough. But once you know him, you will find him amazing. His lectures are funny and clear. He is patient, if you have questions, feel free to ask, because he is actually a really nice person. His courses are tough, but certainly deserve you to work for it. Go to his office hours, its really helpful.
be aware of the homework never feel math is hard before i attend his class
The best prof Ive had at UBC in 3 years of math. Amazing clarity of thought, very creative going way beyond course material to inspire and fascinate. He will PUSH you hard, in an honest way. He has amazing office hours and once described getting into math "like a club. It's hard to get in but once you're there its great". He's kind of intimidating.
Really really tough but after ward second year math is easy. Great prof.
This guy is really overrated. He keeps experimenting with different teaching techniques but often it's just downright confusing. On multiple occasions he refused to help me because the questions I ask "could be on the exam". His expectations in terms of homework are unrealistic.
He has a very interesting way of thinking of math. In Vantage College this was the hardest course but he was the best professor even if he taught just one time each week. I like him because he will treat every question well and never treat his students like children. He is kind but not too friendly.
A really excellent prof I have ever seen in UBC from my two years experience in UBC. I learned a lot from him when I was in Vantage. Despite he didn't teach me for the second, he is still to be our coach for MCM/ICM, which makes me really appreciate.
I'm not as "fond" of Fok as some of his other students, but respect the hell out of him. He "cares about students", but it's pretty obvious that he cares about Math much more. He doesn't play favorites and his actions are fair, but he can be a little biting. This was a difficult class, with really difficult homework, but completely worth it.
Wow is all I can say.
A real gem, like a blueberry patch in a desert ;) Recitation is so important, takes a while to realize!
Good: Clear explanations. Bad: It's hard, especially the homework. Ugly: Not much. #blueberry
Demanding but really helpful. Recitations are amazing if you have good TAs! #blueberry
Prof. Leung is fine, maybe even superfine. He's very fast and helpful on Piazza and his lectures are great, however the typed homework does come out of left field. Get ready to work.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! Very humorous, inspirational, interactive lectures! Be prepared for his written assignments; they require a lot of time to finish. Quizzes are frequent, but you'll be fine as long as you do the WebWork exercises. Make good use of his office hours; he's always willing to help.
Expects every student to be exceptional or you wont pass. Weekly assignments expect too much of a student with no calculus background. Does not teach the material you are graded on. Absolutely no guidance available. He assumes you can teach yourself diff calc. Worst prof by far
Fok is a very interesting person that I've ever met. He makes interesting lectures, jokes and also some "poems". If you try more to communicate with him, you will find him reaaaally nice.
Very intelligent and well-spoken professor. The class is difficult, but c'est la vie. If you put in work you will leave with an exceptional understanding of mathematics, and view math as an art form or way of thinking, as opposed to a strict regiment of rules that you have to adhere to.
Fok is the best professor that I have ever met.
Math180 was the hardest class I took, but it turned out to be a great preparation for Math101 and even my other non-math classes. Absolutely inspiring prof. Protip - learn how to latex before this class.
Class is quite intimidating.. he asks the class a ton of questions and expects us to answer. This keeps the class intriguing however and keeps you focused. His lectures are extremely insightful and the homework help develop your math skills. I have always loved math so I enjoyed the course, but others struggled. One of the best teachers ive had.
The structure of Fok's section had us think through the material and work it out ourselves without even knowing. You had to work to do well in the class, but if you went to his office hours he was beyond helpful. He tries tounderstand why you're getting a problem wrong rather than just tell you you're wrong. Genuinely cares and is a brilliant man.
Math is a really hard subject for me, but at least this prof made it tolerable. He's an amusing prof who cares deeply about his work, but his lectures are sometimes tough to follow. Did most of the learning on my own. So much Webwork. Easy quizzes every week.
he teaches you simple mathematic rules in class then gives you homework way beyond what you've been taught. he is not helpful with the homework, he just gives you very slight hints at how to start the question but overall don't help
Highly smart, pretty savage. He is not to everyone's taste but you can guarantee you will learn a lot if you are open to it! Pros: great lectures and office hours, really helpful outside class, brilliant guy. Cons: class is huge, could use a better textbook, recitations are hit or miss.
This professor should not be teaching first year calculus. This course is suppose to be for students with no calculus background and he is lecturing on topics ten steps beyond a beginner course. If you are coming out of high school with no calculus experience, do not take his course.
Love him or hate him, you will learn a Lot if you are open. This is not your typical highschool class.
Prof. Leungs class was the hardest and most useful class I took in first year (Im in second year). Yes, he really makes you work. Really intimidating in class but quite kind once you start going to office hours.
The biggest advice is to attend office hours regularly. This class is ridiculously hard but those help. Prof. Leung is actually really nice and helpful there. I also hear he can deadlift 300 pounds.
Terrible lectures that are confusing and dont help with the homework, which theres a lot of. Prof said himself the written part alone (theres an online part too) needs 8-10 hrs of work a week. I think Im gonna fail this class, and its partly because of how poorly this class is taught. Just take MATH110 honestly.
A great professor, and a genuinely kind and funny guy. I was intimidated by the amount of work required for this course, but Fok makes the lectures fun and info packed. He usually opens the lecture with some advice/jokes that helps lighten the mood. Fok himself can seem intimidating , but if you're looking to take his class I promise he is not.
November 8 2018, I saw a homeless guy start talking to Prof. Fok in a bus line, and the prof treated him like he was the university president, to the point of missing a couple of buses. I really do not like some policies in Math 180, as well as the class being too difficult in my opinion, but I will always respect this man.
Professor Leung is one of the smartest intellectual human beings I have ever been blessed with the presence of in lectures. He literally carries himself with grace, and his lectures are always well-spoken, info-packed, entertaining, & funny. The course itself is super challenging, but has changed my ways of thinking which is the utmost goal anyway.
May seem like a harsh professor, but it's really the course that is difficult. Lectures are entertaining and enjoyable, but also quite useful. Office hours are a great help to anyone with questions. Overall, a great professor!
He is so inspiring and cares about all his students. He clearly is passionate about what he teaches and has an awesome sense of humour. Definitely my favourite prof in university! He comes across as harsh and demeaning at first but go to his office hours and you will see what he is truly like.
Hardest course I have taken without being ever introduced to calculus, in this class you're going to be assigned a lot of work, written assignments will leave you stumped for days, maybe a week. His lectures are not helpful, be prepared to carry yourself because Prof. Leung teaches you the absolute basics unrelated to the assignments.
Not going to lie, at the beginning of the term it took me a while to really appreciate his teaching style. Now at the end of the term ive noticed that not only did he teach the basics , but he taught to inspire us to apply our knowledge and to dive deeper into calculus, and to work with elegance/ grace. This is way more valuable that teaching facts
He may seem intimidating in lectures but if you go to office Hours and put in the time you'll notice your effort pay off on the quizzes and assignments(but would recommend going to the MLC for these since they take days). Overall a really respectable and caring professor who is really passionate about what he teaches.
Like most math courses, MATH 180 requires a lot of work. Professor Leung makes this work a bit more tolerable by being so inspirational in his lectures. He obviously adores math and despite the low grades, wants all his students to love math, too. He also consistently sends out mass emails of encouragement to his students prior to and after exams.
Very interesting professor. I recommend his class if you are interested in proofs or getting a deeper understanding of differential calc. Lectures are well structured.
Totally unexpected. This was unlike anything in high school. If you go in expecting to be taught techniques, you will be greatly disappointed. If you go in willing to learn, you just may "change your life".
Taking Math 180 course with Dr Leung was one of my best university experience Ive ever accomplished. I remember going to that class at my very first day and I was in the verge of crying when I returned home after that lecture. Overtime, I developed a tremendous respect for him and see him as my inspiration. He taught me how to think gracefully.
Tips for this class: For Written Assignments, go to the MLC. It will save your life. If you're concerned about something, go to office hours. Prof. Leung seems intimidating but he's so helpful when you put in the work and effort, and will reassure you if he sees you giving it your all. You won't be taught everything, but videos and course hero help
The first month of so thaf I had professor Leung, I really didnt like him. I though that he tried to hard to make things more complicated then they needed to be. But after the midterm I had a meeting with him. Thats where I realized that he truly cares for all his students and that he tries his best to teach you and that he wants to to succeed.
Leung's teaching is overrated. The lecture is just a repetition of his textbook available on his website, though sadly few people were aware of that... Your success in this course depends so much on your "recitation" (tutorial) rather than Leung's teaching. Make sure you pick good tutorial instructors and don't miss any session!
Prof Leung seems nice, but I benefited so much more from my tutorial instructors and MLC. After all this was a big class. Every time when i went to the prof for questions he was always surrounded by people and could not attend to my follow-up questions after his immediate answer.... luckily the TAs at tutorials and MLC are more available!
At the beginning of the course I thought he seemed to be making everything harder than it had to be. At the end I can look back and realize all of this was just to demand a higher level of mathematical understanding. Although I worked my butt off and ended up with a lower than ideal mark, I have no regrets. He's well-spoken and engaging.
I did not find it especially hard compared to other science courses. Prof. Leung's lectures are most times concise and clear, somewhat interactive, and he also takes a decent amount of time for questions. His jokes were funny too. Btw I failed my midterm, so if you study, you can recover your grade. Or just try hard from the beginning lol.
This man loves math more than any person I've met before, and he wants his students to feel the same way. The homework in this class? Crazy. My most time-consuming class by a country mile. I had my doubts about Dr. Leung; his lectures were never very helpful, the homework felt impossible, and the midterm was brutal, but the final was easy at least.
Brutal but fair
Most brutal course I have ever taken. The amount of homework and studying needed for this class was triple the amount for any other course I have taken. He is by far one of the hardest prof in UBC and good luck getting a good grade. That being said, I respect him as a person deeply, and he is truly passionate about math and is a great person.
Hard agree with the previous rater. Fok is a very tough prof who teaches at an extremely high level. The math is hard, the homework is long, the lectures are definitely eloquent but sometimes containing words that you have to look up. But he is also extremely fair. You will learn a lot .... if you pass.
Fok is the best prof ever. He really cares about his students and his subject. Some profs at UBC make you feel like you're wasting your time/money, but he is the opposite. He's amazingly smart, and maintains high standards for his students, which keeps the integrity of the university. If you need help, go to office hours. One of the kindest people.
He is the GOAT
No textbook, no instructions, and lots and lots of proofs. You could not attend lectures and learn the same amount but his 2-hour lectures are mandatory so have fun with that.
Honestly easier than it seems at first. Dr. Lueng is tough and inspiring. Small classes are hit and miss tho.
He is a great prof.
Went to his office hours and was immediately motivated. He may seem tough during his lectures but he is a great person inside his lecture hours or if you have a questions. Very knowledgeable. Lectures are kind of confusing at first and his way of explaining kind of complicates things a little in lectures. Very eloquent lectures.
Prof Leung is the most intelligent being I've ever encountered and you can't help but be slightly intimidated by him. Has the ability to make lectures inspirational and dumb students (me) believe in themselves. Super kind in office hours and helps you recognize your mistakes instead of giving answers. "Math is not a toolbox, it's a way of thinking"
This class puts you in the deep end from the get-go which is a huge shock to the system, but once you get over that you realise how much he knows. Learned more in this class than any other. After the class is over he's still available for guidance too! A real gem.
SO difficult but a really good experience in the end. Quite hard to study except for doing lots of problems and going to office hours.
Lmao good luck
Really hard class, really caring prof!!
Amazing professor. Super organized which is even more important this Covid semester. Everything laid out before, runs a tight ship. Unbelievable caring and wants you to succeed. Active on Piazza, and has office hours multiple times a week. What a treasure for UBC and no surprise with his teaching prizes. Tough tests though so work hard!
As a first-year UBC student starting online, Prof Leung was an awesome introduction. His personality is hilarious and he makes calc fun, and the structure of Math 180 was challenging but well organized and thought out. There is a decent amount of homework and the tests are very challenging conceptual questions, but they are marked very fairly.
If you have him as a prof, you are blessed. As a first year, he set the bar way too high, I dont think any other math class Ill take will come even close to his. This man is passionate about what he does, and he cares about his students understanding. You have to put in the work, but hes there to support you. His lectures are clear and detailed
Marks you based on your understanding of the topic for MATH180. Assignment and exam questions were more explanation based rather than 'solve an equation and be done with it'. Overall wonderful lectures and explanations. If you take his course, I recommend you attend his office hours (gives out very useful info.).
The most amazing prof in math dept.
I'm grateful I had Fok as my prof. I have so much respect for him. He cares SO much about his students, would host MANY extra hours on his own time whenever anyone needed help, course related or personal related. His way of teaching is difficult for sure, but rewarding. He would send us positive messages and song playlists before and after tests :)
Prof. Leung is such an amazing professor and kind person. The course was very tough but it truly made me a better student overall because his tests are very conceptual and require explanation. I really enjoyed his class, and he was very human, which made my first math course at UBC less intimidating. If you have the chance to take his class, do it!
I had major personal issues going on at the end of the course, Prof. Leung helped me seek help and then checked I was okay in the middle of the next term. Don't let his ironic sense of humor fool you, he is really honorable. The one down side to the course is the lack of textbook, but the CLP textbook is solid.
Prof Fok does give incredible lectures.. if I was planning on pursuing a math major. Because I'm just trying to get the math credits and get out, this course is unnecessarily difficult. We didn't have a midterm because our class average would be almost a fail & the weighted 50% final doesn't look much better. Still, a really great and smart prof.
He did not consider any students that did not have the same background knowledge as others. He did not communicate clear learning objectives. His content was based on doing an example that was completely different to what we would be tested on. Save yourself the pain and dont take this class!
Definitely my favourite professor in the Math Faculty at UBC. Hes an absolute legend.
His way of teaching was difficult to understand and I learned way more from my tutorial classes than from lectures. His explanations were unnecessarily vague and unhelpful to students who did not already understand the material. The examples covered in lectures were not very relevant to what was on the final. Purple - ifykyk
The best prof I have ever had. Lectures were clear and concise about the material. Very helpful and explained questions perfectly. Would take again.
Amazing lecturer but unbelIEVably hard course
I loved Dr. Leung's lectures and learned lots in the course. I found the final very difficult compared to the practice exams.
Dude rules. He LOVES math, he makes that apparent from day 1, and for some that will mean there's a disconnect because he views math through a more positive lens and a more intuitive understanding than a lot of students will. He will, however, do what he can to make sure ANY student understands things intimately. Tests are hard, but not impossible.
He's a really nice person but often gets off on tangents in the lectures. The lectures then tend to be very confusing and it becomes hard to follow what he's actually trying to teach. The final exam was also nothing like the practice tests he recommended we do.
Class was very hard. Only one lecture per week, learning was crammed and we weren't taught everything we need to know. Only had one test and it was the final, which left you unsure on how university math tests go especially since this is a first year course. Very non enjoyable class. Class average was 57%, indicating many fails.
He is an amazing prof. But the course is really hard, one of the toughest I have taken in three years. Absolutely would recommend but try to take easier courses along with MATH180.
This guy basically saved Math103.
This review might look odd, but that's because I really do respect the guy. HOWEVER, if you're looking to get a good grade and you're not the strongest in math, please take 110 and save yourself the trouble of failing 180. Prof. Leung is a super inspirational man, but even my best couldn't help me pass. 57% class average guys, 57%.
Amazing guy. Would take again. Absolute legend and extremely clear. Hilarious and engaging.
Amazing professor, nice guy. Tests are concept heavy but not as difficult as everyone says, as long as you get used to the idea of really understanding things.
He wasn't a prof for 103 but he literally carried the course. He was the only one to help students with problems in piazza where the profs did not even spare a glance at. He's also very honest and gave great advice to students who were overtly (and somewhat rightfully) frustrated with the course.
This was a brutal course, but I would definitely take another one with Professor Leung. Inspiring and knowledgeable prof.
Great professor with the way he teaches, but course isn't easy. The final was difficult and because there are no midterms, it's hard to tell where you are at. I honestly learned way more from my TAs than the actual prof. If you have a good group for the discussions and are able to do well on the tutorials, you can pass even with a bad exam grade.
Really hard course. Prof. Fok genuinely cares though. Office hours are extremely helpful.
Amazing, really accommodating. Super organized. Great TAs!
Fok is by all means a great guy, with a good personality and is generally pretty nice and approachable. However, his class is difficult, especially if you have trouble concentrating for longer than 15min. There is no textbook, no online (no use of tech in his lecture), and everything is lecture note based. If you can't think long you get confused.
The class is pretty hard but eventually, you learn healthy habits and you can tell he really cares and wants to make class better. At first, it seems impossible and you leave the lecture lost and crying but I just had my last class and I will miss it! Also funniest professor!
Amazing and funny professor; cares about his students and genuinely wants us to do well. He's very active on Piazza and responds extremely quickly, and also holds daily office hours leading up to the final exam. His lectures can be confusing at times, but calculus is just a difficult course (the terrible group projects did not make this better)
Most overrated prof in department. He's not the worst by any means. Doesn't teach anything relevant to the coursework. The lectures are long derivations, not really related to the weeks assignment. The 5 star reviews praising him to be a god are those "interesting" bootlicking students who think worshiping another adult will help their grades.
Tough course but Fok is the GOAT. I learned more in 3 months than in 4 years of high school. There are previews of exam questions in assignments, so pay attention!
Course itself is okay, but the final is really hard! Group work is meaningless, and be prepared to work on your own if you are the one who wish to score high.
Yes the course is ridiculously hard, but I was never that strong in math and I passed so you can do it! Fok's a legend and there's good reason that he's a 5/5. Lectures are very much about math itself and not the best way to learn the material but they further your understanding which I think is more valuable. Just be ready to watch some youtube!
The prof himself is great, however the course was difficult, especially if you have a weak math background like me. Course content is the same as Math 100 and the extra hour of tutorial was not helpful imo. I salvaged my grade by getting 100% on group assignments, which was only possible through going to office hours (!!) and making use of the MLC.
Super lecture heavy course and boring, but he makes it humorous and interesting. He wants his students to succeed and motivates for success. Everything in the course is fair, no midterms, just one final exam. His humour is what kept me going throughout the term! He could be intimidating at first but humorous personality makes up for it!
10/10 dude. So funny and charismatic. BUT do not forget that this is a ubc 1st yr math course which means it is HARD and weeder. FSLs jokes make it better tho. He does random attendance so if u don't go to class prepare to be ROASTED. I can tell that he is very passionate about the subject and he does his best to help you succeed.
A very interesting and engaging prof. But the lectures are very heavy and you need to do a lot of work.
Professor Fok's lectures are very interesting and engaging. But be prepare for Webwork.
Intimidating at first, but actually really kind especially in office hours. Old school cool guy. Only downside is he takes spot attendance.
This was by far the hardest class I took this term, yet he knows his stuff. "Train hard, win easy".
I was terrified of taking calculus because I had only done up to pre-calc in high school, but Prof Fok did a really good job of teaching the content. He's a really funny guy and encouraged all of us to do well. You do have to put in a lot of work, but it'll be worth it in the end, I promise.
MATH180 was meant for those who didn't take Calc in high school, but it was identical to MATH100. Fok is passionate, but this takes over his teaching---too much "understanding>memorization," so he doesn't teach basics and instead goes over 1-2 VERY specific problems each lecture that aren't too useful. Had to watch another profs recorded lectures.
In terms of his teaching, I personally did not understand his lectures and had to watch organic chem tutor afterwards... HOWEVER, his tests are EXTREMELY fair; I personally think our final was easier than the final papers we found online and most of the questions were taken straight from Webwork, only changing some numbers. AND HE IS VERY FUNNY.
The final exam was kind of fair. The two midterms were brutal in some ways, and fair in others. Lectures were focused on specific problems rather than general ideas/concepts. I ended up learning everything on my own through videos and other resources. But, his dry humor does help when it's a 9:00am calc class, and he does seem like a cool person.
Dr. Leung is funny and his final was fair, but MATH180 is an almost entirely a self-study course. Be prepared to make use of Youtube/Khan Academy because I (and many other people) did not find the lectures useful. Many were extensive derivations of differentiation rules rather than applications and examples. Prepare for tons of WebWork !!!
The lectures are very useless. He focuses to much on concepts, and skips many steps when solving problems, making it impossible to follow along. I only went to lectures for attendance but solely learned from ochem tutor on yt. His sense of humor is pessimistic and slightly degrading. would NOT recommend AT ALL
I'm in my last year now (not in math) and realizing that FSL was my best prof by far. I found his class really time consuming at the time and hated it for that reason, but I have never learned so much. Highly recommend, but it's a lot of work and as others have noted FSL can be a hardass.
Really smart guy. I hate math. I still hate math, but he made me hate it a little less. Probably the hardest class I've ever taken, but that's just cause first year calc at UBC is a joke. He really does seem like he wants to help you and see you succeed. If you have to take this class, I'd say he's definitely your best choice.
Alright gang hard truth is that first year calc at ubc is tough as hell. And some people say he focuses too much on concepts but you gotta remember his job is to teach calculus not how to prep for the exam questions lol. Still, I only went to one office hour and could tell he really cares about students his doing well. Final was super fair.
Took this class with him four years ago. He is a special prof.
Literally most egotistical professor in all of UBC. I don't know why his rating on this platform is so high,it is probably because he deletes the bad ratings. TAs are even scared of him and give warnings about his bipolar attitude.
Incredibly thoughtful guy. Big piece of the reason I got into math at UBC.
First year calc at UBC is notorious. Fok is an amazing teacher, I wouldn't have made it without him!
Expect a challenging yet rewarding experience with this prof. His lectures cover concepts deeply, though some find them fast-paced. Supplement with resources like unstuckstudy AI and the free textbook for solid prep.
Prof Leung is an amazing mathematician and professor. He has great personality and is very helpful in guiding students. However if you are not into math, i.e. taking this course for prerequisite of higher level CS courses, this course is not useful. Prof focuses on concept and theories, proofs, etc, not applications.
Professor Leung has a wonderful personality, engages students into class a lot and takes every question students have. His class is very fun. However I'm not sure if he covers everything we need to know in order to do the practice problem. Have to teach myself so much things and the information feels really scattered. Respected.
The absolute worst professor. Do not take this course with him. Expect proofs for midterms and exams. If you do take this course make sure to ask questions in class since he won't answer questions after class. He will pick on you randomly in class and have you mention your name just to forget it again.
Too much theory for me, but he knows his stuff. I get the feeling it's easy to pass but hard to get an A. Beware attendance is taken.
He is the best math professor theres nothing else to say.
AWESOME PROF
Fok is the goat. Test heavy, but this guys lectures are great. Honestly best math prof you could have.
GOAT. lectures are fun. This is the best math prof I ever had. Nice Nice prof.
Best math prof ever, went to every single lecture and actually understood the content
The best professor of my entire degree. Straightforward course. Amazing lectures. No tricks except in black star questions where he warns you well in advance.
Great prof. This was the only course where I attended all the lectures and felt like I got something out of all of them. He has serious aura in spite of the fact that it doesn't make sense at all.
Loves overcomplicating simply equations with theory.
He is the best math professor!
I love him so much. Very funny guy and pretty entertaining lecturer!
There are many better Professors out there in the area of Mathematics! Fok-Shuen Leung just focuses way to much on his beloved theories. Unfortunately these theories don't help much when it comes to performing on exams. He's just such a silly little guy!
Boy this class was confusing. You know it's was bad when asking the Prof a question left everyone even more confused.
Great prof, very clear tests based on assignments. Very clear in office hours.
I attended all his lectures even though I was in the other section. Super clear, except during the tangents for A-students, but those don't happen too frequently. Highly recommended!
Surprised no one has commented on the way he takes roll. Calls names at the break, penalizes you if you're not there, puts you up for random prizes if you are. Overall, there is less material than calc classes but the hard problems are way harder. FSL is excellent.
A subpar Professor at best!
Fun, easy class. FSL is an interesting guy.
Does a great job of helping students prepare for material that won't show up on exams!
This is a great course for non-math people. Clear, interesting, philosophical, collaborative. All the instructors were good but to me Fok just stood out. He is a great guy who wants everyone to do well and gives individual feedback. I gather he is much tougher in advanced math courses but this one is delightful. We had one class in the Chan Centre!
The most overrated Professor at UBC!
Inspiring and amazing teacher who pushed us hard, he also was the one who got me into math. Highly recommend!
He's a gentleman and a scholar, one of the best profs at UBC. But warning: expect to put in at minimum five extra hrs a week on this course or it will destroy you.
don't know why most people hate him for such easy course,if it is MATH 221,I agree hard final and homework to handle. Calculus wasn't that hard, idk how precal is invented ,for what purpose. Besides, some often cut lecture, play truant, seriously? What are they attending university for?
He is a very understanding teacher. He doesn't go on until everyone has a chance to ask questions. He can come off as pretty scary but you can tell he cares!
I am in the other section but I have attended his section since week 3. Thankful for every minute of it. He is amazing.
Attendance is mandatory, the course is difficult, but he is a very nice prof. He makes sure everyone has the chance to ask their question before moving on. He genuinely cares about students, sends emails the night before each test to wish everyone good luck. I submitted my regrade request late and he still marked my test.
The best professor of my entire degree. Amazing lectures. No tricks except in black star questions where he warns you well in advance.
Fok is the goat. Test heavy, but this guys lectures are amazing. Honestly best math prof you could have.
Very down to earth professor, one of the best ive come across and has a true passion for teaching and helping students.
Best prof ive ever had at UBC hands down.
literally the goat, my glorious king Fok. Ill miss your bald head :(
Fok was the best part of MATH221, and he genuinely turned a course that I expected to hate into one that I looked forward to attending. He genuinely cares about every student's success in the course. Crystal clear on course expectations and test material. Always responds promptly to emails. Also tried his best to make lectures engaging.
Math 221 is a conceptually difficult math course, but Prof. Leung made it as clear and easy for us as possible. Be sure to understand the content and do the weekly homework, and I'm sure that the exam will go easy on you. Ready to attend every lecture cuz there is gonna be random attendance taken.
Fok is a fantastic prof. He has very high standards and genuinely cares for student learning. He gives good advice after each of the two midterms, which moved me up a whole letter grade.
Very good lecturer! He's definitely a GOAT and humourous. I was rly touched by his emails sent before exams. The tests are fair, pretty easy if you do spend some time reviewing the contents.
