really rough professor.
Too smart to be teaching basic o-chem. Tests were all right, but he did postpone our first exam due to computer malfunctions...and ticked off the entire class (I knew a bunch of students who pulled an all-nighter for the exam).
Dr. Michael gave hard exams, but was extremely helpful and clear in his explanations. He was the first UW science teacher that gave me the feeling that lecture offered something the book did not, and showing up was worthwhile. Ochem is hard for some, but he breaks things down very nicely, and I reccomend the hell out of him.
a pretty good organic chem prof. he had a good sense of humor and was obviously very intelligent but that wasn't enough to keep me from skipping his lectre.
He was a great o.chem prof. His class was actually quite interesting, and he was very helpful.
Wonderful Chemistry professor. My best Chemistry grade ever! I actually did not fall asleep in class. Very clear lectures. Professor was eager to help students.
awesome chem prof. you have to take him.
Best professor hands down. He's super smart, clear, friendly and extremely helpful. Definitely take a class from him if you have the chance.
Best chem professor I've had so far. He keeps things simple and clear. Lectures were engaging. Tests were straightforward and fair. Highly recommended you take him!
Awesome ochem teacher. He knows the material well. I feel like I am always ready to learn in his class. His test is decently hard (more like tricky) but it is manageable. The only thing bad about him is that he sets the curve kind of low in comparison to other chem profs. But otherwise, awesome prof to have.
He was a pretty good teacher. His tests were fair. I recommend him.

interesting lectures. i would recommend making your own rxn table. Definitely memorize the diff rxn, crucial for the exams. exams are fair, can get a bit tricky. if u memorize the rxn, do all his old exams, and attend lecture, u will do fine.
You won't sleep in lectures! Lecture notes are very clear and his tests are fair as long as you do the previous exams. The highest grade i got in a chem class.
Very clear and straightforward kind of guy. If you put in the work and look at his old exams, you'll do just fine. Make sure you have a solid understanding of the reactions and make sure you're there for every lecture.
Forrest Michael is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. He's crystal clear in his explanations, and is always willing to help anyone who doesn't understand the material. He's a very approachable prof, and I highly recommend him. He's kind of a genius too :)
forrest is awesome. if you're going to take 237 with anyone, take it with him. he's funny, provides excellent explanations, and his tests are fair.
I love this man, he's a really good and funny teacher. His tests were hard, but very fair. Take him if you can!
Amazing professor! Taught me more about chemistry in one quarter than all of my previous classes combined! Tests are definately really hard, but absolutly fair. One of the best professors at UW for sure!
Amazing lecturer. Keeps the interest and engagement high during lectures. Tests are hard but fair, like others have said. If you have the opportunity, take this guy.
Excellent professor. Very glad I learned fundamentals of chemistry with him. Gave very fair tests. Very handsome professor too! If you do all the problems in the book and start early doing the practice midterms, and attend his office hours, you will do well in the class :)
Best professor I've had at UW. Lectures are awesome, tests are fair. He's super good looking too. I would definitely take organic chemistry every quarter for the rest of undergrad if he was the professor.
I love Professor Michael!!
Great professor. His lectures are very interesting and fun to listen to. I'm so glad to have learned intro Organic Chemistry from him.
The most handsome professor I've ever met so far. His tests follow the same pattern like his previous ones, so make sure you practiced from his previous exams and quizzes.
Gorgeous professor. Intelligent, handsome, what more could you want? He made ochem very interesting for me.
His smile makes my heart melt.
He was great at communicating. He knew how to talk to those that aren't chem majors and knew how to break down the concepts clearly. He also uses a lot of questions from his past exams/quizzes, so be sure to review those as well. Never a dull day in his class, and he always knew how to put a smile on your face. Good looks was icing on the cake ;)
Amazing man. He is really nice and very helpful. He is such a smart person and teaches chemistry in the way that he learned it, so he gives you a lot of super useful shortcuts. Definitely read the text and use the lectures as a supplement & you'll be good. He sweats a lot though which can be distracting, but he is hot pepper worthy, trust me. ;)
His lectures become useful about 3/4 of the way through the quarter. Sometimes you get quizzes, sometimes you don't. Very disorganized. He's one of the better chemistry teachers at UW, but of course that's a very very low bar.
Super good professor. What he doesn't talk about in lecture won't be on exams. Disorganized, does not reply to emails or bother to reach out to students unless confronted in face. But none the less, BEST chem237 prof. you can possibly have in this series.
Excellent professor. I learned A LOT in this class. And he is a Greek God come down on earth...utter, pure hotness.
Great lecturer, very clear in explaining concepts. Exams are very difficult, they are about twice the amount of work as the practice exams that are given. Overall excellent professor, difficult class. Work hard and ask for help when you need it and you will do fine.
Overall good prof. If you attend lecture and do a lot of extra practice problems, you'll be fine. Really difficult course but practice tests are super helpful and they cover really similar material as actual exams. Actual exams are just a lot harder. Oh and he doesn't put lectures online.
Wonderful professor! Exams are challenging and shouldn't be underestimated. Do as many practice exams and problems as possible but also actually just learn the material and not memorize it. Lectures are super helpful if you come to learn and not memorize. Strongly recommend this professor!
Professor Michael is an excellent professor. He writes as he speaks to the class so the pace is manageable. He is very engaging and really nice if you ask him questions. Do his practice exams and go to the Ochem study center for extra help. His exams are straight forward and clear! Best Ochem professor I've had so far!
People think Forrest is a good professor but the way he lectures is actually very confusing. He's unclear on what we have to know and to what level of detail. Idk, don't take him, didn't work for me.
Interesting material made better by engaging lectures and great class structure. Weekly quizzes keep you on top of your game, while his teaching style is both interactive (student participation and resulting critical thinking leads to understanding) and crystal-clear. Encourages questions, which is great!
He has a good sense of humor, & is easily accessible IN THE CLASSROOM. Otherwise, don't expect to get a reply via email/Canvas. Same goes for TAs. You're really on your own. He has you read the entire chapter the week before, then you take a quiz, & he lectures next week. Lecture notes are unorganized and unclear as to what you you need to know.
I personally enjoy Michael's teaching style and explanation, but his exams are ridiculous. I don't recommend him for those who don't like taking tests. He's not very specific with his expectation of what students should know. I'm sure lots of people hate him, but I enjoy his class and think he's a great professor.
Personally I find his lectures very unorganized and explanations not clear. Tests are very hard and he will not tell you what he expects you to know. Do not expect any help from him outside of class. That being said, I liked the short breaks he gives during every lecture and how he always talks about an interesting ochem related issue.
His lectures were super interesting, but you could easily skip them if you read the book. At first weekly quizzes were difficult but after a while you get a hang of what he would/wouldn't cover. If you enjoy chemistry you'll appreciate his interest/passion in lectures. Definitely a class that challenges you to truly understand the material.
He has enthusiasm for the subject, but isn't great teaching it. The material itself is doable if you get help & tons of practice. However, lectures are poorly organized & not too helpful except for in-class practice problems. The weekly quizzes are alright, but tests are incredibly difficult. Look for other sources of help because he will not.
You can tell he know his stuff and enjoys chemistry, but his classes were confusing and disorganized. Midterms were very hard but final was relatively easier. Reading the book before lecture is a must if you want to keep up with his poor explanations.
The way Prof Michael sets up his class is that you have to read the textbook before you are quizzed and lectured on the material. I don't know why I should even bother with lectures, because he acts as if we already know everything. If I need practice problems, I'll go to the book. I'd rather have a professor who actually teaches me material.
Professor Michael is an amazing professor. Literally everyone I asked who said they didn't like him gave vague reasons when in reality they don't like him because they aren't doing well in the class. He's the best lecturer I've ever had and gives a ton of examples during lecture, which is great. Tests are hard but its fair (its ochem). Take him!
Worst prof I've had. So unorganized. Can't connect lectures to concepts in the book. Not tech savvy so can't count on panopto. His lecture notes don't help either as he only draws molecules and doesn't even write down phrases to go with them. Tests are impossible and everything is last minute. practice test not posted until day before exam. Awful
He's definitely the best lecturer I've had so far at UW. There's a bit of a learning curve as to what he focuses on/how to study for quizzes/tests. As a chem major, I thought he was really great but I could see how people wouldn't like him if chem wasn't their focus. That being said I did receive the lowest grade out of the whole sequence here so.
Homework & quizzes count as make-up points for lowest test score. Lectures can be hard to follow, he teaches by contradictions which can confuse you if you haven't read before class. Tests are hard, but are very close to the test from the year before which he posts as a practice exam. You'll do more reading and practice than ever before.
You're going to get out whatever you put in for this course. His exams are pretty difficult but he offers a chance to make up points by homework and quizzes. He also doesn't penalize incorrect answers for Sapling, which is really helpful when learning the material. The more questions asked during lecture, the more he clarifies things. I liked him!
Professor Michael has a knack for exposing the tricks and hiccups that come with the material taught in Orgo. All of his examples do an amazing job of clarifying exactly what elements he wants you to take away from them. Do yourself a favor and read the chapters before lecture, otherwise you'll get lost and blame the professor for not doing his job
Sometimes one of the exam questions will not be covered in the lecture, which makes it hard for us to know what will be covered in the exam. Otherwise, work hard on the book questions and his practice exams and you will be guaranteed a good grade.
Forrest was a fantastic professor. I was really a fan of his lecture style, and the way in which he presented the material. He is really intelligent, and teaches ochem in a way that focuses on reasoning rather than memorization. He always brought up relavent chemistry news, which was refreshing for a prof to do. His exams are hard, but so is ochem
such an inspirational model.
The professor did not do much explaining in class. It was more of a question answer session. He expects us to have read and understood the material before class and during class time he just asks us questions and expects us to know the answers. Very confusing and no clear way of teaching.
When I took it his lectures were just him scribbling chemistry down on a blank One-Note document so if you didn't read the book before lecture (at least skim) it can be hard to follow/see what important info to take away. You learn his system by the end of the quarter though and it's not as bad. Exams are very similar to practice exams provided.
Michael is my favorite professor of the OCHEM series. He made his OCHEM lectures fun and interesting by making students more involved. He gives out example problems during class that clarify what we're suppose to understand for exams.
He is very good at explaining chemical mechanisms and complicated ochem topics. He makes you read the book and sometimes it is a little unclear what is going to be on the test, but tests are reasonable (for an ochem class at uw). He takes his time on each topic and focuses on what you will be tested on. Good professor for a really hard class.
I liked Forrest. A lot of work, but he makes you think critically about what you are doing and why, (and why you're college ;) ). Sit in the front row, read the book beforehand, do the sapling homework before you go to lecture. The more you teach yourself the more you'll be able to participate in class and ask/answer intelligent questions.
worst professor ever. Seems like a nice man but he doesn't actually teach anything. And this isn't coming from someone who's doing poorly in his class. I had a 3.7+ going into the final. Lecture notes are scribbles. Isn't clear about what you need to know. Exams are all over the place. He was a terrible professor. I stopped going to class.
He expects you to read a lot. Weekly quiz and homework are not mandatory but recommended. Not the most organized professor and often things are going to be done last minute, but he is very knowledgeable. Anyone can survive him as long as they read the textbook and go to lectures. Luckily textbook is full of mechanisms so its not a lot of texts
Terrible handwriting; Assign homework before the materials' covered in lecture
Forrest Micheal is probably one of the smartest professors I've run across so far at UW. This makes him an incredibly skilled lecturer, but it also makes it hard to keep up in lectures. A downside to the class if the quizzes are comprehension based, which often meant having quizzes immediately after lecture. Go to office hours for clarification!
You learn a lot in Michaels class, but his teaching style was such a pain. The only way to learn was to come to class, as he contradicted the textbook a lot. The only things in the grade book are tests and quizzes, and he curved the average lower than he told us he would because he was disappointed we didnt do well on his impossible final.
Dr. Michael's lecture style is not the same as most other professors, it's based a lot on whole class discussion, which prevents lectures from being dry and painful. Even though the grade book is almost entirely exams, he does allow you to drop one. Overall I highly recommend taking his class it's the best class I've taken at UW so far.
Honestly a really good professor. A lot of people complained about how hard his exams were but I believe the people that didnt do well didnt put in the extra work that is needed to do well!! I watched YouTube videos on all the concepts covered and got an A.
I liked Dr. Michael and his lecture styles. He focused a lot on reasoning and did not expect students to memorize concepts. The only thing I will complain about is that his exams are very long. The first midterm was around 7 pages and the second one was around 6 pages. The final, however, was 12 pages long. I did relatively well in the class (B).
Im taking his class rn and its not the best. His final was REALLY hard and way too long. His lecture notes are hard to read and his live lectures can be confusing as he doesn't give the best explanations to answers and doesn't elaborate. I wouldn't recommend him for 237 but if he teaches higher chem classes its worth a shot??
He's primarily an honors teacher and it shows. He might be a great honors ochem professor, but he's too difficult for regular ochem. Long and difficult exams (even by ochem standards) + oddly helpful but hard to calculate grading scheme stressful class.
Lectures muddled the material more than shed light on it, so I resorted to mainly studying from outside resources. Difficulty of his provided practice problems and exams did not align with that of the actual exams at all.
In the best way possible: this professor is a scientist, not an instructor. Course material provided is good, class structure is weak, and lecture style is painful, at least over zoom. Not very personable, and rudely brief when annoyed.
I took forrest for advanced synthetic ochem and felt that i learned a lot. Forrest is a GENUIS. He lectured literally OFF THE TOP OF HIS HEAD on a blank piece of paper all quarter, and didnt miss a beat. The class was very relaxed (only 2 papers and a final exam) and he made us feel that we were there to actually LEARN, not for a grade.
TERRIBLE professor. we have our first exam today and everyone was so confused. do not take this professor. he doesn't teach you what shows up on the exam and homework problems are useless. he only offers 2 office hours and the TAs don't know anything. don't do this to yourself. he cares more about research than student learning.
beware of this professor. just took his exam today and the questions were so ambiguous. he doesn't teach in a good style and only cares about making his students suffer, that is probably why he is associate and not real professor. the questions are so confusing and similar that you don't know which 2 are greater or least. not enough practice exams
someone told me not to take this professor--should've listened. he is rude and doesn't give any clear answers, attended all his office hours and received no help for exam. he is rude and doesn't care about his student's learning. contradicts textbook several times and doesn't even tell us what to actually read. HORRIBLE experience so far.
Just had the exam today and noticed that people were not doing good things by bringing in their own colored periodic table and put dipole moments of molecules on there. Dont think this is right. No regulations or proctoring, and almost half exam was dipoles. Heard people talking about this outside lecture hall after exam, very bad things happening
if -10 was possible, i would give. such a horrible, inconsiderate professor. no office hours before the exam. lectures ONLY included a resonance structure in first one, and a bunch of boiling point practice questions. no resonance. no functional groups. exam: 3-4 boiling point ques. this prof sucks at teaching and needs to go to teaching school.
Rude and unprofessional! Ive been trying for like ten minutes to find a way to rate a professor 0/5.
He teaches a tough class and can't cover everything in lectures, so reading the textbook is necessary. His lectures are really helpful though and the class is well organized.
dont even get me started. dont take this class with this professor! dont do this to yourself. unhelpful! how did they give him the job?
His class is hard only because the exams are hard and because he provides 0 resources to help you succeed. Posts pre-exams too late, rarely goes over valuable content in class, never hosts office-hours and he is extremely disorganized. If you are able to take a different professor, I definitely would. The content isn't difficult, HE is difficult.
HE IS DELETING RMP comments! Not a good professor for many reasons such as that. Our TA is not teaching us and he is having bad comments be deleted! Watch out for this one. He is a horrible professor and doesnt teach rather has students suffer with his miserable exams. Fake comments are being posted by the teaching staff. No resources or help!!!
Never again! Gpa dropper and horrible experience! NO TA OR PROFESSOR HELP ANSWER KEY SCRIBBLES NO EXAM REVIEW SESSIONS NOTHING JUST READ TRXTBOOK EXAM PROBLEMS NOT LIKE THE TEXTBOOK ONES REALLY MESSES with you. Dont do this to yourself. He does not know how to teach and cares more about laughing at your suffering! Suuuppper hard exams. Tough cooki
Very disorganized lectures that are hard to following since he lectures off the top of his head with no previous slides to look at. Exams are significantly harder and completely different from the homework.
Obviously a very smart guy, has mostly worked with the material at a very high level. This however does not translate to a great intro level professor. The class is very difficult, lacks structure, and requires a lot of self-studying. Hard to tell if these issues are the product of a poorly designed "weedout" system, or the professor himself.
Doesnt want to teach the material properly. Off topic lectures, unrelated material to the exams. A very smart person but not a good professor especially for an intro level class. Would never recommend. Homework unrelated to exams and too many quizzes and exams each time, and more examinations but less learning. Chemistry is about learning.
I didn't think he was bad. The tests are very reasonable and if you do your work, it isn't difficult to get a good grade. The biggest problem is he doesn't give you many practice problems before the test, so you need to either buy or find the solutions manual online.
I was really surprised by the very negative ratings for Forrest. Organic chemistry is a hard topic in general and I think he teaches in a fairly helpful way. The TA quiz sections are really helpful and the exams are hard but pretty fair, as they are mainly based on the practice exams. Definitely not the best but not the worst either..
Professor Michael gets a bad wrap because CHEM 237 is naturally a difficult class. Although his tests are difficult, the practice tests he provides are 70-80% similar to the actual exam. Attending his lectures is a must if you want to do well in his class. As long as you go to lecture, reading the textbook isn't necessary. Class is hard but doable.
said "A tutorial on YouTube could probably explain the material better than me" on the first day of lecture-- really did not like the way the class was structured. Reverse lecture-tutorial format didn't work very well for this material-- very teach-yourself. That being said, nice, passionate and helpful explaining material outside of class.
I really would do a 3.75 if I could. First off, if you like structure Forrest does not. We read chapters and didn't need all the content, wasted a lot of time. With that being said, lectures give you what you need, he's passionate, and practices are very similar to exams. You do need to learn on your own, difficult but doable surprisingly lmao.
took his class during peak pandemic in fall 2020 and was living in the opposite time zone. not only i had daylights savings against me but also everything in his class. i emailed him about accommodations and he never replied and the TA was equally unhelpful. taking weekly quizzes at 3am isn't feasible and that obviously reflected on my grade.
He's the worst professor I've had at this school, and that's saying a lot. Our TA was absolutely terrible, she didn't know how to do anything chemistry related or teach anything. she claimed she didn't have the textbook into the 4th week of class and told us to go elsewhere to get help. complete s%%% show. yeah, we get it your trying to weed out.
BIG weed out class. i've heard that the uw med admin. communicates with the chem department to weed out as many students as possible by not teaching anything relevant during class. he is such a terrible professor and perpetuates the weed out system. we know you hate premeds but don't take our your frustration on us, not our fault you cannot teach!!
He was only good for online, his entire class would cheat on the exams by taking them together. he didn't care because it didn't apply to him. his exams can be found on chegg, coursehero, and all sorts of websites. people gave him 5/5 because they were satisfied with their cheating earned grades. if you 4.0'd the series while online, you cheated
All the 5s are from the online cheaters. They are satisfied with their grade because they cheated when things were online, and 4.0d the entire series. people would take the exams in fraternities/dorms, and work together for the grade. he is only a good professor for promotion of this type of cheating. From what I heard, doesn't stop in person.
This class was the first in person class I took at UW and it was probably the best possible intro. The class moved super fast and the content was crazy, but it was entirely fair. Furthermore, the homework and weekly quizzes are "optional" in that you can use the points from those to sub out a midterm or part of the final. Loved the class in person
Nice person, but his explanations for concepts were entirely confusing. Also, no class slides! he just writes on a One note file and following him along can be so difficult as mentioned in my first point. He gives an explanation, but then there is an exception. we know he's trying for critical thinking but I really don't recommend for ochem.
we didn't pay tuition to be taught by youtube. Even in his office hours it seemed like he was not interested in being there and was just at the uw for research. he even told me to use youtube if i wanted an explanation. the purpose of having a professor it for what? Relied heavily on Youtube to teach me and befriend upper classmates. beast!
The class itself is very difficult LOTS of material to learn. A lot of times I had to use outside recourses to help me. The professor grades fairly and his lectures are fast paced. The homework and weekly quizzes are technically optional, in a way that you can use the points from those to sub out a midterm or part of the final.
He's one professor who is a huge part of the weed-out culture. Unfortunately, the accessibility to get help from him and his TAs is very weak. The lectures were also not helpful, half of it would be for questions (people end up asking irrelevant things), and the other half was about random topics (Nobel Prizes). So I wouldn't recommend it overall.
lectures consisted of trying to parse out his horrendous handwriting and learning ab nobel prize winners. help from professor and TAs were worse than weak, unfortunately. expects you to just understand orgo conceptually without actually teaching it. never actually answers any questions, just asks you them back. cares ab his students though!
I liked the way Professor Michael taught. To be fair, I had learned a lot of the material last year so it hadn't been too much of a struggle to grasp the concepts. I would bring a model kit to class, because his drawings are not the greatest. He was sarcastic when students asked questions, which can be intimidating. best of luck if u have him.
Organic chemistry is a hard class, but his lectures are always really helpful and interesting. Definitely a lot of studying needed for this class but he releases practice exams before each exam that are similar to the test. Class is graded only by tests, you have the opportunity to replace your worst test score with hw/quiz grades which is nice.
Prof Michael is really good, Chem 237 is difficult by default but if you study his practice exams are very similar to the tests so if you study that you should be fine. He likes to ask trick questions in class which is nice because then the test doesn't have something new and tricky because he's already showed it to you.
He does a good job of explaining important ochem concepts, and his grading system is very generous. While sometimes he does go a bit off topic during lecture, for the most part they are definitely worth your time and very helpful, and he only tests on things he explicitly covers in class.
Professor Michael is a tough teacher, but he gives you everything you need to succeed. His practice exams are very helpful in studying for the tests, and all of the quizzes and homework are reasonable. The grading is a little weird, but really helps if you do all the assignments. Overall a he does a good job preparing you for the rest of the series
Prof. Michael tended to go over material very fast. Reading the textbook and watching supplemental videos made things a lot easier. His course requires a lot of studying and outside work. However, he had a great system in place where homework and quiz scores can be used to replace a test, or part of the final. I enjoyed the class!
Loved this guy's teaching. Its clear he loves being asked questions in class, as long as they are thoughtful, and encourages discussion and debate. Very funny but also down to earth professor. One of my favorite classes so far.
Forrest is a funny/always positive in class. With that being said i have a few gripes. He gives absolutely no practice problems beyond the past years tests and the quizzes you have weekly. For the past years test he posts the answer keys late because "he doesn't trust us to do them without looking at the answer". Keys for these are also often wrong
Great teacher who is definitely passionate about the subject. Extremely exam heavy but can replace an exam grade if you do most of the homework, quizzes, and other assignments. Quizzes were optional to attend, but they only can help your grade so it is recommended. Lectures are recorded, so attendance is not mandatory and is not graded.
I took Forrest for 237, and now in 238, I feel so behind. In the Chem 241 lab, I was very confused because we were doing things that the other 237 classes learned, but Forrest did not teach. He also put material on the midterms that was never discussed in class, and the only way we knew about it, was if we went to the CLUE study sessions.
Forrest is super charismatic and also breaks up the long 2hr lectures with chemistry fun facts that apply to everyday life like why chocolate is poisonous to dogs! In addition to this, he is extremely patient with students and has plenty of office hours. Cannot recommend enough for 237.
He only used textbooks. Answering only a few questions in a 1.5 hr lecture. Never answer a question directly.
If you want to put your tuition towards teaching yourself with a incomprehensible textbook and youtube videos, go ahead and choose Michael. He does not teach. Lectures are office hours with 200 students that he will condescend to without actually answering any questions. The only good thing about his class is that I'll never have to take it again.
The job of a professor is to explain content, not host lectures that serve as a "discussion" expecting you to learn all the material at home from the textbook. He needs to start explaining reactions/mechanisms/concepts instead of us paying tuition to learn ourselves. Flipped class doesn't work for most people and makes learning very stressful.
prof. Michael was funny during lecture. he didnt do a very good job at "teaching." flipped classrooms don't work for most students, and we didn't pay tuition to be taught from YouTube. He expects you to read the textbook and watch videos until you understand the material yourself, and lecture is basically a giant office hour spent answering bad q's
3 sections of the class and Michael's was the slowest one. Flipped classroom format so he uses lecture as his "office hours" except he doesn't answer anything at all. Literally learnt all concepts from textbook & Ochem tutor on YT. Not a good preparation for the rest of the ochem series. He probably thinks he's the "cool prof". Never again.
Go ahead and choose this professor if you prefer studying all by yourself with terrible resources provided to you. Refuses to answer questions straightforwardly, gives wrong answers in the answer key provided for practise exams and refuses to clarify what the coming exam will cover. Loves putting content on exams of concepts/questions not covered.
Forrest is a very engaging lecturer, and he has an entertaining sense of humor. He's also pretty accessible and regularly answers questions on Ed. I do have some issues with his class. He expects you to do most of your learning from the textbook: you're tested on things he doesn't teach in class. His exams are also difficult and have curveballs.
University emphasizes independent learning, this class is extreme, expecting you to teach yourself everything. The professor offers little support and sets unrealistic expectations. Lectures are disorganized providing no clarity or structure. Rather than teaching, he seems to assume students already understand and judges them for not being experts.
As someone who understands chemistry classes and gets a 3.9-4.0, DO NOT take this professor for your own wellbeing. First off, his lectures aren't on content but goes over questions and never actually answers them. He also is degrading towards students who don't know something and often mentions students are only in this class for med school.
He's OK. I wouldn't take him again as I feel like almost all the learning I did was from the textbook and then ChatGPT explaining concepts to me lol. Felt very condescending in lecture and on Ed. But is pretty flexible. Plus his exams are exactly like the practice tests he gives, which I think make up for his lack of teaching.
don't want to sound harsh, but he always has his own way of teaching. You can feel his enthusiasm during the lectures, but the whole quarter was useless, and he wasn't helpful at all. If you want to learn something from the lectures, don't take this class. He spends the entire class answering questions and treats the lectures like his office hours
Lectures were full of practice problems where he would ask for volunteers to answer each question. On ED discussion, we will not give you straight forward answers. The answer keys for practice exams will have mistakes. The practice exams are the same format as the exam, so I would spend most of my time on those questions.
Very engaging lectures and funny, but lots of issues with this class that made it difficult for reasons beyond course content. Both practice exams and actual exams were full of mistakes on the answer keys and the tests themselves. Lectures don't cover everything you're expected to know for exams; you have to read the textbook to learn most concepts
This class felt self taught. We had to learn conceptually difficult ideas with little guidance and his lectures were pretty unhelpful. I did almost all of my learning from the textbook, youtube, and study groups. His tests are fair though and are very similar to the practice exams (but the answer keys are consistently incorrect).
Beware that you need to read the textbook and come with a decent understanding of the weeks concepts before going to class or lecture will be useless. If you are prepared, lectures are very helpful and teach you how to apply the material from the textbook. Prof is obviously smart, but his class is not for everyone.
Professor Michael is engaging and passionate. Though exams are challenging, the flexible grading system and available resources like Unstuck study make the class manageable. Definitely take this course if you're interested in chemistry!
Most of the other reviews are right on the money, but I'd like to add that his class is not hard to succeed in if you read the textbook and do the homework before coming to class. He won't cover the material himself, but he will explain it pretty well if you ask focused questions. Also exams are 1:1 to his practice exams with slight variations.
Dr. Michael is a very knowledgeable man; almost too knowledgeable due to the fact he has been studying organic chemistry for over 20 years. While 237 is hard, he does not make it more difficult than it needs to be and is very good at teaching us how to study ochem which is the most valuable part of the series anyways.
Forrest is unquestionably just the best and I learned so much about the nuances and intricacies of what was taught in sophomore organic chemistry ;) . Now I get the primal urge to tear any molecular structure I see apart retrosynthetically and piece them back together again. Life is so much more fun thanks to this wonderful class.
Dr. Michael is an excellent professor who is very passionate about what he does! You can tell he really cares about his students succeeding in this class. Orgo is incredibly challenging, but he made it so much easier to understand. His class is very textbook-heavy, but you'll be okay if you keep up with the reading.
Best chem prof at UW. Very smart and gets his point across effectively. His tests look very similar to the practice exams, and he gives you ample time to do homework and readings before class. Very fair exams, he only tests you on what was covered in class. Fun, informative brain breaks in the middle of lecture, and he obviously likes his job.
Dr. Michael knows his stuff, but he expects students to understand everything from the readings themselves. New content was learned through the textbook rather than lectures, which were spent on disorganized practice problems or talking about irrelevant topics (ie, Nobel prizes). We were quizzed on textbook before going over that content in class.
exams are very long but strongly mirror practice materials and content was reasonable. keys for exams often had errors and the partial credit system was pretty harsh(also we didn't get a final key?). course grade entirely based on exam scores (lowest dropped), and he didn't have an organized grading system (no breakdown or guaranteed benchmarks).
Trauma. If you took genchem honors & think you'll be fine, beware. Very cryptic-I appreciated the theoretical discussions but I didn't appreciate spending 50min of class time on a ? we would be expected to solve in 30s on an exam. To top it off, 12hrs before our final someone asked a ? abt our prac exam, and his response was "that's a tricky one."
