I nearly went into cultural anthro because of her!
This class was brutal, but her strangeness made it worth going to. As well as the hottie I was sitting next to. She's a riot!
She picks the most interesting films!
This class was really interesting and I liked the topics she discussed. Pretty easy class b/c the exam questions were taken from the study questions. Some of the lectures were tedious but theory is never exciting.

She's a very interesting person with good knowledge of anthropology. She's also super nice.
A definite must have for an anthro teacher! Quite the experience in her class!
very nice teacher
good teacher. stutters somewhat, but cool hair. looks like einstein
She is very helpful, and very approachable. Her class was always interesting.
Very interesting class. She tends to run on a little longer than she expects, as she sometimes gets carried away with topics. She has a slight stutter, but it's not a huge hinderance. Class isn't too intense, which is nice for those of us in engineering.
I took this class because it was at a good time- little did I know it would change my life. Anthro is now my major, and Professor Boag is definitely a part of that. Her class was interesting, funny, and sometimes provocative, the films were helpful and I was only very rarely bored.
Good class, good professor. She really knows her stuff. Very approachable and nice. She injects her lectures with funny tidbits and anecdotes. All lectures are online; so are exam questions. Makes for really accessible studying. No hidden tricks up Boag's sleeve.

An eccentric character but very entertainig and friendly.
Hard to follow her lectures. Her notes are incredibly unhelpfull at best confussing. Her lectures are disjointed and often irrelevant and do not translate well to notes. Her test questions are often phrased awkwardly, more complicated than necessary.
This professor was an INCREDIBLE BORE! Her hair was the only thing that was interesting in that entire class. She thinks that the cultivation of corn and her work in Italy is something we all should know much about. Her phrasing was awkward, she doesn't lecture well and her class is a plain drag.
She's an excellent lecturer. A definite must have for anthro teacher.
Dont be fooled with everyone saying anthro is easy. Its hard work and alot of tideous time studying to try to pull off a B which was dissapointing. None the less prob ur best bet for a anthro prof and is really approachable which made up for the hardness of the material .
Franca is very sweet but she is very difficult to understand and at times she seems to babble.
The review questions she gives for tests basically spell it out for you. She speaks clearly, uses helpful examples, and expects just enough from you. Thanx to her for "no stress".
Tedious! AHH, so much work for a 100-level course. Had to drop it because everything about it was an absolute bore to me. She's nice and funny at times, even got to watch some cartoons before class started. But I dozed off in every class. Very confusing!
Quite the character. Although she can be absent minded and babble she covers the material needed, with amusing side stories to attempt to wake up the sleeping people scattered throughout the room. Tests are not tricky, plenty of material provided for review.

Boag's cool. She's a little eccentric but that just makes the class more interesting. You can tell she loves what she does. She shows lots of interesting films and her classes are worth coming to. She's bubbly and friendly.
Overall a very good prof, although her tests need considerable preparation and the textbook is relatively unhelpful.
Great person....bad hair, but a great attitude. Exams were fair, notes were ok. Highly recommend this course to others. Great as a slacker course or if you have a loaded schedual. Movies are tedious but her stories are not so bad.
She's a not bad prof. She does go off on tangents sometimes. The text book was crap and the exams where pretty hard. Pretty nice though, just don't talk in her class.
A terrific professor - She works hard to ensure you understand the material (including providing study questions for the exams). Exams not difficult if you simply study. Lots of interesting films to see in this course too.
I don't think that I could have survived a theory class if Franca hadn't been teaching it. I actually became interested in some of the topics because of her teaching style and comments. Very helpful class, especially for other senior arts classes.
Stutters and rambles about useless junk. Her midterms are mostly based on material learned in-class so you have no choice but to attend her crappy lectures.I have no idea how someone can like this prof.Id rather gouge out my left eye with a rusty spoon than to sit through another one of her classes.
She is probably one of the best profs that I've ever had. I was forced to take an "arts option" class, and this was it, but I ended up loving it. Amusing stories, thorough notes, fair exams, and most unusual of all -she really loved her subject, and cared about the students.
This class was so boring and Franca would always go off on her awkward tangents. She also is quite unfair with giving extensions to some and not others. She would then claim that she always offered extensions in class, when you know that she didn't, because you were at the lectures! Academia can't always admit when they're wrong or unfair.
Thought I'd hate having to take this course, but ended up loving it! Boag made theorists interesting & theory relevant. Re: comment on extensions below. Sour grapes ? - coz I skipped a couple of the last classes & still heard extensions announced twice in class . . .
Franca was such a good prof that I changed my major to anthropology. She's very friendly and her exams are extremely easy and fair - if you go to class. She also makes a point of knowing you and addressing you by name in and out of the class. Added bonus: she always puts on cartoons before the lecture starts.
Listen. Everyone who reviews her says she goes off on a tangent about nothing and that is true, but the stuff she goes off on a tangent ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS. You'll excel beyond the rest of the class. And Take notes on her notes. I enjoyed the class, the first half was really boring but the second half is interesting. And LOTS OF MOVIES
Dr. Boag is awesome!
This class was drier than Christmas fruit-cake passed down through the generations. Dr. Boag is very monotonous and struggles to keep the attention of the class. The exams are very specific so if you're not a keener, take at least 8 hours to cram!
AWESOME! I thought I was going to hate taking this course but Franca Boag made the class. She does stutter and go on tangents...but without the tangets you would miss a lot of the little things that anthropology has to offer. Sample questions were very helpful for the exams.
This prof should not get ANY bad reviews. She is the best!! So helpful, gives study Q's. I didn't go to every class but still got 99% on the final. Plus, I ended up loving the course (People of the Circumpolar Region) even though I'd gone into it quite unenthusiastically. PLUS, she's hilarious and her eccentricity is endearing.
Really liked this class. Dr. Boag has been super nice and very helpful. She provides her notes on WebCT, but that does not mean you don't need to attend class! She gives study questions for lectures and readings also, although way too many to realistically go through thoroughly, in my opinion. Still-- good class, good prof.
She provides alot of help to get prepared for exams and is generally fun in class.
She makes 8 am class worth going to! Even when the readings were dead boring, she made it come alive and seem relevant...always ready to help, and doesn't live to stress you out! If you're willing to put in the effort she's always there to clarify and make you feel like something other than a first-year statistic. Highly recommend.
An amazing professor and fabulous woman. Take her class, you won't regret it.
She rocks, a really great prof. Though, she does expect everyone to keep up with the readings or you will pay for it come exam time.
argh! i thought she was terrible! this was a 300level class that felt like a grad course! the readings were really heavy.
Shes a fresh PhD therefore too detailed. Number of readings per class not practical.you will find yourself racing through them trying to get the point for tests rather than thoroughly reading and understanding concepts. Her language/diction is way TOO floral for anthro. Makes a subject/concept way more difficult than it should be for a 300 level.
Her love for the subject is the best part of the class. A great prof and an inspiring person. Going to class and being attentive is all you really need to do well.
Good prof and an interesting class. She knows the material well and the multiple choice exams are fair. If the class is at 8AM, don't worry about it. She's always in a good mood and plays a couple minutes of cartoons the last five minutes before class! Coffee is always helpful.
She's really passionate and energetic, which helps keeps us interested. She's fair about tests, and while the readings can get kind of demanding, if you stick with it, it's really rewarding. Great prof! Will take more classes with her if I can.

She was very helpful with any problems I had. her tests were pretty demanding due to the fact that you need to make sure you've read all your readings, but worth it in the end, because she is very fair. She is very passionate about what she teaches, she's got a great sense of humor, and answers any questions any students had.
Difficult to stay focussed for the beginning of her classes. take the notes. STUDY for the tests. make sure you go for videos. any questions on midterm pre studies shes really no help
Very scattered lecture style, difficult to understand what her point is much of the time. Very flexible with deadlines however and does make the attempt to help out when you have questions. Unfortunately her clarifications are usually as unclear as her lectures. Obvious favoritism towards her Italy field students.
I've taken 207, 370, 399, 394 as well as field school w/ her. she's absolutely great. uber comprehensive exams --> really, if you want to learn. do the readings and the study questions --> you WILL pass the grade and then some! hilarious, extremely helpful, GOOD teacher

One of the best educator of my time...very approachable and very comprehensive.Exams are very fair and it is a pleasure to be in her class!
she is extremely helpful and funny. she gives out the sample questions that are of great help. in the beginning the class is a little boring but over all she is pretty good.
TERRIBLE. NEVER ENTER THIS CLASS. All she talks about is stupid jokes and "bling".
Boag is BRUTAL. She can never stay on topic. You have to read the text book if you want to follow in this class. She always goes off topic or forgets what she was talking about.
Her lectures are so scattered it is extremely difficult to understand anything she is saying. I would never take another class of hers if I have the option.
Yes, her lectures are very scattered but if you do the reading than you can follow. She expects you to know your stuff (reading, lectures notes) and if you do, than exams are fairly easy. She is a hard marker on papers, and expects you to put time and effort into it. I did mine two days before, and didnt get the grade i was hoping for.
Be prepared to read the entire text book. She hands out Key concepts before the exams. Make sure you know them as her exams are all long answer and the questions are word for word the key concepts. I don't know how you could get below an A in her class. If you enjoy the class/material you'll do fine!
Franca's classes are hard to follow unless you do the readings, though, so prepare to spend a lot of time studying and learning on your own. The lectures are a SUPPLEMENT to the readings, not a replacement. She gives out exam questions at the beginning of the semester and is always accessible through email, and is the nicest woman you'll ever meet.
Great professor! SHe's always there for ANY kind of help. If you just want to go over the exams or want an explanation of something you didn't understand. Her lectures are very interesting but when she hands out the study questions and key concepts to know for the exams READ THE TEXT.
Franca is great, very knowledgable about her subject and very easy to talk to.
Class is not the traditional structure, but more about whole atmosphere of approaching the subject for what it is: THEORY. so the class is not and i would not expect it t be the traditional cookie cut out sort of class. she was very informative about the subject, material was dense, and she was always available to answer questions. BEST PROF EVER
Here's how to get an A on Franca's exams: Take additional notes in class. Do the study questions - All of them. In each answer, define all of your terms. If you follow these two steps, you're set with at least an 85%. If you need clarification on anything, email her or go to her office. Franca is amazing and wants all of her students to succeed.
She's very entertaining but she knows her stuff.
The best instructor I had in my 5 years at Grant MacEwan. She is clear, concise, friendly, humourous, knowledgeable and very helpful. I would recommend any class she teaches!
Her lectures were far too scattered. She went off topic on a regular basis, and most of her lectures were too vague. Overall, not the best anthropology instructor, but she is very passionate in her work- too bad it doesn't transfer into great teaching.
I have had Franca for multiple classes and although she seems to digress into a variety of tangents, the point she tries to convey is that the material is inter-related to multiple facets of society, no matter the subject. Individuals who are liberal thinkers & do well with social science methodologies and theory will do well, others will not.
I really like her. I think her classes are refreshing. If you go to class and understand the concepts you'll be fine.
She is the bestest most awesomess teacher. SO happy Macewan has her as a permanent! She is very helpful in regards to understanding critical information. She encourages self thought, and critical thinking. Learned a lot about traditional ecological knowledge, and learned lots about Italian farming.
Franca is super confusing. It's hard to pay attention to the important parts of the lecture because of her constant off topic tangents. She holds personal grudges and will make this class brutally hard if she dislikes you. Expects too much reading and prep for classes, it is impossible to stay on top of this class with her.
If you need a cookie cutter classroom style in order to learn you need to back away and find another class. If you are interested in Anthropology and awesome people you will LOVE her and her classes. She is a wonderful person, teacher, and mentor. Her classes are wonderful, so is she, if you can't handle that you shouldn't be taking Anthro classes!
Franca is super nice and very relaxed. I have taken two courses with her and enjoyed both very much. I found that to do well, you must read ALL articles and chapters she assigns. Answer the optional assigned reading questions throughout the semester, and you will be fairly well prepared for her exams.
Hard class with lots of reads required. However, she is super understanding if you talk to her. She will give you the articles and topics to write her papers on. And if you talk to her she will give you extensions and let you hand papers in via email. Very friendly.
Franca is very nice. I just had an issue with the excessive amount of films that she showed in this class as I find it difficult to just learn from the films. I also sometimes had difficulty relating the films she would show us to the actual class and her lecture slides. She also goes off topic a lot and is hard to follow along with.
Best class ever! It's a seminar discussion class so attendance and participation are expected. Super interesting lectures, sometimes got off topic but in a good way. Be prepared to read lots and fill out weekly journals. Textbook is awesome but papers are lengthy and not well written. Best anthro prof ever! No stress!
Be prepared to write! Her assignments and exams are all written, there is a ton of readings and films required to do for the assignments. Her lectures are important to attend as they also aid in doing journaling assignments. This course is easy marks if you show up and do all the required assignments. Franca is so friendly and wants you to succeed!
Franca is a prof who genuinely cares about her students doing well inside and outside of school. She isnt the most organized prof ever, but she makes up for it in how interesting her lectures are. It's not difficult to do well as long as you stay on top of the readings. I dont usually talk to profs outside of class but seeing her was super helpful.
Once you figure out her teaching style, it's all smooth sailing. She's unconventional, don't expect her to be like other profs
Franca is one of my favourite professors. She's an absolute gem to go see after class, she'll help you with anything you need a hand with- class related or not. Sure, she's incredibly disorganized and this can be stressful for some, but once you figure her out, the class is smooth sailing. DO ALL THE READINGS, and watch all the movies, trust me!
Franca is very nice, but I found it genuinely very hard to follow along with the material during the lectures. Even when she tried clarifying things, it did not make sense. I was incredibly stressed out this term because of this course :( ended up dropping it.
Franca is just a genuinely amazing person. Super easy to approach. There's weekly readings and 2 ethnographies that have to be read for the final paper, but you get to choose what one of them is. So there's a decent amount of reading but all interesting, in my opinion. Franca can be a bit disorganized but if you go to class you'll be set for tests.
Franca is a real gem not only for her passion, but her enthusiasm for her students. You won't see an attendance sheet passed around but it's important to show up to connect to the material. Lots, lots, and lots of readings + films. If you aren't passionate about anthropology, or willing to do the work, you might want to look somewhere else. Bravo!
Franca is an amazing prof and an even greater person. She's passionate about what she teaches and makes class fun with her sense of humour and enthusiasm. I almost changed my major to anthropology because of her! If you do all of the readings you'll be set.
Franca is beaut, I had her for 245 and 399. If you do the articles, write down everything she says that irrelevant to the courses, you will do very well in her classes.
Best prof, basically has got me through my degree!
She takes 4 or more days to reply to emails, often doesn't reply at all. Assignments are vague and have to fight for clarification. Overwhelming amount of writing assignments yet all worth minimal marks. Takes weeks to get grades back yet will be further tested on the material before getting the original grade back (aka you get it wrong twice).
she looks for quantity over quality expecting five 1000 word discussions, a midterm, 2000 word bibliography and 4000 word research paper where everything is worth no more then 20% each. the final is on 18 lectures, 12 textbook chapters, 13 articles, 10 films. talk about overwhelming i got other classes, don't think this prof gets that.
Absolutely love her. But the one thing you have to do with her is immediately do your homework or else you'll get overwhelmed. She's so much easier to access during her office hours, and will always be able to talk after class. If you love anth, take 399 with her because she's a delight
She makes it clear on the syllabus that there's going to be a lot of work, as it is expected in a 300 level class. However, with all the assignments and readings she gives you, you actually learn so much class relevant material. She is passionate about what she teaches and shes is a great prof if you have any interest in cultural anthropology
Very confusing and hard to follow prof, basically taught myself everything and lots of things were not in the textbook or the lectures and it was very confusing to keep up with. That being said, a very very kind and understanding prof who is easily accessible and will try to help you out however you need. Not an easy class with this prof however.
Her class averages are super high but it's extremely frustrating to attend as she gets on tangents extremely easy then doesn't finish covering class material. She gives an insane amount of assessments, more than i've received even in my seminars, which takes her forever to mark. Easy marks but a painful, long process to get them.
She's just a delight. Obviously adores teaching and is very knowledgeable about her field, she's kind and approachable.
Franca really cares for her students and does her best to facilitate their success. She is a fair marker and explains concepts well. She uses a lot of external resources, like articles and films for better understanding of the topics. On exam day she bought the class boxes of cookies, donuts, and pastries from tim hortons!
Franca is super caring and thoughtful but this class was terrible - run... the lectures are confusing. The slides are unhelpful in studying and MANY readings - takes up the time of 2 classes. Has a good study review for the final.
Very nice prof who definitely cares a lot, but confusing lectures & unclear assignment goals
Very difficult to hear and understand her. Don't focus on the lecture notes. Has a lot of readings and documentaries. For the tests, she gives you a list of the questions beforehand. You don't need to attend class regularly, but definitely come for the classes before your tests because she tells you the main points to hit for the test. Easy marker.
Franca is caring and passionate. She tries to remove stress by having flexible due dates. Her lectures are very long and hard to listen to. She meanders a lot. She assigns a TON of reading, including bi weekly discussion papers. She's a great person, but I wouldn't take another course.
Franca's class is a lot of work, but if you stay on top of the readings and assignments, you'll learn a ton. The lectures can be confusing, but the review sessions before tests are really helpful. I found using Unstuckstudy along with the course materials to be a game-changer for studying.
