Great proffesor. Doesn't complicate the subject. Energetic. You do need both textbooks. Lot's of reading!
Overall, very good professor. You will learn a lot in this class! 3 tests, no final, and 2 papers. Tests straight from lecture so GO TO CLASS. A bit of reading, but not all is necessary. Take her, the class is interesting!
Very straightforward, hard grader, you'll have to work for an A, but it's worth it cuz the class is really interesting. she's no nonsense, but very friendly outside of class and pretty helpful too. Take this course!
I love Dr. Flannery! She is firm but very fair and I have learned SO much in her class! She definitely thinks out of the box when it comes to lectures...it's not all taking notes! Take the class and find out what I mean!
one of the best professors i've ever had. really great humor and lectures.
Took her class on Terrorism and Apocalypticm. Very interesting and she does a great job at teaching it. You will have to work for an A but it isnt impossible, she is very nice and helpful. Highly reccommend!
she is amazing! she is always willing to help, and loves when you ask questions and engage in conversation in class. dont have to read textbook because the tests come straight from lecture, but book is very helpful in studying. tests are not hard as long as you study. really nice lady! take her classes!
the best professor ever in any subject! she's so funny and understanding and really presents the material in an accessible way. take her classes, any and all of them!
Great professor. She makes the material interesting because she's so animated and is always willing to help out if you don't understand things right away. If I had more time I'd definitely take more of her classes because you learn alot. She makes you think about things differently and you have a good time doing it. BUT GO TO CLASS AND READ!!!!
Nice lady. Really funny and understanding. Knows and cares a lot about the subject. I learned a TON about terrorism and apocalypticism. Take her.
Dr. Flannery is an amazing woman--she is intelligent, helpful, caring, and an excellent professor. She genuinely cares for her students and will go out of her way to help you...if you are willing to help yourself. Do the readings and keep up, go to class, and pay attention. Ask questions, talk to her. You won't find a better professor.
This professor is extremely arrogant, condescending, and half of the information she dictates seems entirely fabricated. This professor teaches this gen ed class as if it is the most important major course a student will take over their college career. She plays favorites and also teaches various religions with significant bias DONT TAKE THE CLASS
Considering that it was an honors section, her expectations were fair. Sometimes I got confused during lectures, but the material was really interesting. GO TO CLASS. All material on tests is from the lecture notes/discussions. She?s pretty funny and nice; sometimes intimidating because she?s so knowledgeable.
Professor Flannery is a really nice lady and good professors. You must go to class and take good notes in order to do well. If you are a visual learner do no take, tests are based more off lecture than text book.Easy B, hard A. You have to do shared inquires for each chapter based off each chapter which she grades hard. Not an easy Gened!
The content of this class is very interesting but also very taxing on the emotions. Dr. Flannery is great at teaching this class. I learned so much. There is a lot of work but it is an upper level 300 class. I suggest taking this class even if you are not an International Affairs major.
one word: AMAZING! She is a great woman and a fantastic professor. The class is interesting, captivating, exc. Highly Recommended. Yes you have to do work, but it is worth it. P.S.: First day don't let her scare you with the syllabus.
By far the best professor I've ever had. This class literally changed the way I see things... despite the hard work (but come on, we're in college), I would gladly take this class again if I could. Professor Flannery is helpful, super interesting, and will teach you more than you though possible. Take this class, I'm so glad I did!
Dr. Flannery may sometimes come off as condescending and she definitely thinks very highly of the subject; that being said, however, she is very knowledgable and you will learn a lot. Write down every word she says (and don't skip class!) and you should do fine. I barely read the book. Despite being a gen ed, it really made me think.
The class is unorganized and her teaching style is difficult. She relies heavily on the textbook. She just gets up and speaks during the class so it is difficult to follow and take notes. Says random stuff that does not come together cohesively. Half the time you don't know what you are even trying to understand. Would not recommend for a Gen Ed
Dr. Flannery is very knowledgable on this subject, which can come off as stuck up but really she isn't. She has a great interest in this subject and if you put forth effort into understanding it, that will pay off. Go to her office hours! She notices that and gives a better grade. The tests are mostly lecture so go to class and pay attention.
Throughout the class Flannery will help you, but she makes it very clear that she is always busy, so it makes you feel like its an inconvenience for her. You don't need to read the book. Beware! At first the tests seem easy but don't be fooled, the tests get harder. Also, chances are you might not like this class if you aren't religious.
Don't do it!! she takes the class very seriously and makes a gen ed way harder than it needs to be.
She's a sweet lady but i'd recommend this class only with caution. She's very scatter brained and her lectures are all over the place, you have to write down every single thing she says. Also, she's very knowledgeable about the subject but a bit condescending. She also makes it very clear that she's too busy for her students.
This class is interesting but she makes the class very difficult for a gen ed. She teaches it as if it is the most important class you will ever take. Her lectures are unorganized and hard to understand sometimes. Definitely not recommended if you're looking for an easy A
Dr. Flannery is one of my favorite professors at JMU. She is a very good lecturer and deeply cares about her students. Study guides for tests (3 tests and 1 paper). For the paper GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS FOR HELP. That's all I have to say
A lot of notes to take during class, but other then that barely any work to do outside of class. She gives study guides for the tests so if you do them and study the day before you will do fine. Loved her she's so nice and makes it very interesting.
I had her for GREL 101 and she's the reason I changed my major... 460 was the most amazing class I've ever taken and changed the way I think and view the world. She's a tough grader and you have to hang on every word she says but I feel so privileged to have learned from such an intelligent woman. Will def be taking IA363.
She is fantastic. I love her.
This class is amazing!! Flannery is fantastic, lover her! 100% recommend taking this class, no matter what your major is. It can be a tough class at times, but so worth it!!!
Flannery is hands down my favorite professor at JMU. She is an incredible woman and truly cares for you. Aside from my love for this woman, I have taken her 2 semesters in a row and will take her again. REL 200 is my favorite class I have taken at JMU. I highly recommend taking one of Flannery's classes.
she's really nice and wants to help you succeed, but you have to go to her office hours to get the help. I would recommend her for this class because she cares about the subject, but you definitely have to work for a good grade.
Very nice lady but her lectures are a bit unorganized. She makes this class harder than a Gen-Ed needs to be. She assigns easy papers and is a really fair grader. She is really there for you at office hours, which are useful to go to since lectures can be confusing. She is passionate about the subject so that makes lecture more interesting
Flannery was an amazing professor! This was by far my favorite class and I would definitely take the class again if I could. Lectures were very interesting, in fact, I didn't mind getting out of bed to come to it at all. I learned a lot in this class and she was able to really make us think about religion and its application to the real world. TAKE
Nicest professor i've had at JMU! She genuinely wants you to succeed. Go to her office hours for papers and she'll tell you what to do to get an A. You have to go to class but the content is actually interesting. Tests are pretty straight forward, just take good notes. She can be a little unorganized but overall great class! Easy B, kinda hard A.
Flannery is a great teacher with a solid understanding of how the old testament works. Class has a few quizzes, two tests and a paper. Attending class is "mandatory" because otherwise it is hard to stay on top of things. Lots of reading if you want to do well. She is very approachable and wants the best for her students (not out to get you)
Dr. Flannery is an incredibly knowledgable professor. I would suggest taking this class if you are interested in the historical and literary history of the Old Testament or if you are a Religion major. Wouldn't suggest for an elective. You must go to class to get the proper info that you need for tests. Not easy, but a wonderful professor.
not a TERRIBLE class, but definitely avoid if possible. she is a little unorganized, gives you more information than you can handle, and doesn't make it clear what will be on the exams so you basically have to write down and study everything she says. she's nice but sometimes can be very condescending. also awful with technology
At the beginning of the semester, I did not like her at all. The more I was in the class, the more I respected her, because she knows her subject well. Although she does shove it in your face. She loves being asked questions, and will explain things again. She gets distracted very easily, but she does want you to do well in the class.
Professor Flannery is very passionate about religion. If you have to take this class then I would recommend taking her. The lectures are pretty boring and she does call on people. I would recommend doing the study guides for tests. One paper and journal entries due at the end of semester. Easy B have to work for an A.
I started this class hating it but it eventually grew on me. She is very smart and knows what she's talking about. Attendance isn't mandatory but you have to go to class to understand religion. Tests are non-cumulative, multiple choice with one essay question (she gives you the possible prompts beforehand). 3 tests, 1 paper, and 1 quiz :)
Do not recommend. Flannery is not direct and very confusing on what she is teaching. It is all tests and one essay. Very hard to get a good grade and i wish i did not take this course. She is nice and funny but not a good class.
She's so smart and so passionate about the subject. I enjoyed her, but she does make you work for it. The lectures can be difficult to understand if you don't do the reading, but the readings are helpful. She's also good with answering questions if you're confused. Also, do your paper on indigenous religion. Please don't make the same mistake as I.
This class is awful. Youd think it would be managble it youve ever learned about religion before but it isnt. The lectures make no sense and she starts so far off roof from the actual book, and then the tests have nothing to do with the book or lecture. Highly recommend looking for another REL101 gen ed teacher. If you have her, good luck.
Flannery really knows her stuff and cares about your success in the class. Material can be confusing if you have never been exposed to other religions before but she is very understanding of that and is always willing to take the extra 5 minutes in class to explain something in more detail. Readings are important but I've gotten away without them.
This class was way too hard for 101 level class. The grade is based on two tests, the final, and one paper. She says you need to read the textbook before class and for tests but I didn't open mine once. She takes this class too seriously but at the end of the year she throws out some random bonus points so I can't complain. Try to avoid if you can.
Flannery originally was a teacher I just could not be able to sit through long lectures for. But, by the end of the year I was able to study better for the tests and got help raising my grade a little bit at the end of the year. Three tests and one paper (work very hard on preparing with notes). GO TO CLASS AND FILL IN YOUR OWN STUDY GUIDES.
It's manageable, but way too hard for a 101 class. Tests are based off of lectures and she says a lot during lecture so it's hard to know what to write down. She's super liberal and is annoying about it. Tells us to buy two textbooks but I never bought them and got by fine with a B. The study guides she gives us are complex but useful for the test.
Took this class as an elective, so glad I did. Flannery is caring and fun. Makes you think about how you view religion and Judaism. Is open to hearing from student opinions. Lots of reading but I found myself really enjoying it. She's loved by her students and cares about them. One of my favorite teachers and classes at JMU.
Flannery is an interesting prof. She has 3 tests, a pretest, and a paper. Study for the pretest, it's weighted heavily and if you don't do well on that, you won't be able to get an A. The other tests are more so based on lecture, but READ THE BOOKS and USE THE STUDY GUIDES. She wants you to succeed, but she isn't an easy professor, so be prepared.
Best professor I've had at JMU. Two required texts you have to get in order to do well on exams because a lot of content is taken from the text. Amazing lectures that engage the students and made me want to go to class. Loved every second of this class even though it was different I wanted to learn more. 10/10 experience TAKE HER
Flannery is a super nice lady, but she can be hard to follow in lecture sometimes. There's only like five grades for the entire class but if you study the textbook and actually go to class you should do fine.
I had Dr. Flannery for Rel 101 and she has been amazing. Her lectures are super interesting and she more than willing to help you during office hours. For my class, we had a total of three papers, but if you go to her office hours with questions she's really helpful. Take her!!!
Flannery is not a bad professor, she is super sweet and very passionate about religion. The class is super boring though and there are three papers in total. It is honestly pretty easy except for the papers. If you're good at writing then you'll definitely get an A!
shes a very nice lady, but the class is hard. ive been taking this class online, and you really have to pay attention. you NEED to go to her in her office hours for your papers or else youll do very poorly. shes VERY particular on how she likes the papers written.
Absolutely love her! She is so caring and loves her students. The class was online due to COVID and she was so understanding. She even made all of our quizzes due at the end of the semester to lighten the workload. Very interesting lectures and SO EASY to pass. Her voice is also super calming which helped while doing lectures over ZOOM. TAKE HER!!!
This class was probably my favorite class I've ever taken in college! Dr. Flannery is very knowledgeable and I still talk about the things we learned a year later! A great and interesting class that I would suggest to everyone! Only downside is the textbook is one that she wrote which is always sketchy but at least it was good!
She gave us 1 week to write a 12 to 15 page paper on religion with full citations. Not cool. Acts like we don't have other classes and work. Who does that? it's almost impossible and way hard.
So this class is hard because it's a 300 religion class & you're reading & analyzing stuff from 2500 years ago. But Flannery is so kind and tries to explain everything even though it's still hard to understand sometimes. She was so nice w the huge paper & there's no final exam just a project. Can't miss classes though but this professor is chill.
A good grade Prof Flannery's classes is not a given by any means, but if you put in the effort you will learn a lot and she is an extremely kind and understanding professor, not to mention so smart! Would 100% take more classes with her.
Dr. Flannery is by far one of my favorite professors. She cares so much about her students and is very flexible. Her class involved a lot of reading and writing, but it is all based on really fascinating material. She's kind of a tough grader but gives amazing feedback, especially one on one during office hours. I highly recommend Dr. Flannery!
Great professor, ridiculous course. I read more for this--which I took for an elective credit--than I did for almost all my other classes combined. She has you do a role play game that makes no real sense and write a masters level 12 page paper. Honestly one of the kindest people and caring professors I've ever had though. Great person, bad class.
Dr. Flannery was the best professor Ive ever had, I compare every professor to her. Her lectures were interesting and captured my interest and she was very understanding.
She is a nice lady but this is a ridiculous class for it being a 100 level gen ed. I do more work for this than my medical terminology class. The way things are taught are only directed towards auditory learners and its frustrating. I really dont recommend
She is a very nice lady, but the class is not fun. She gives a lot of work and reading. You watch a lecture video that she records that morning. The tests were the hardest test I've ever taken. This is a ridiculously hard Gen ed and the topics are not that interesting. I do not recommend taking this class, a regular history course would be better.
Dr Flannery is super passionate abut what she teaches! Definitely not an easy class, but the work is worth it and the content is super interesting. Definitely tells it like it is and won't baby you (in a good way). Tests are pretty straightforward, she provided us with study guides for every test as well. Everything is online lectures, powerpoints.
Dr. Flannery is the best! She really loves teaching her subject and cares that all of her students do well! So sweet and funny, I always loved going to her class
Flannery is a horrible professor. When asking for help she often talks down on you. She is a heavy grader and gives so much busy work. Her exams are impossible to pass and she gives no curves. No review for tests. wastes her class on stuff that won't be on test.
Prof Flannery is a great person but teaches a very heavy workload course.
I absolutely loved Dr. Flannery and her class. She is one of the best professors I have had and I would take her again if I could. I was sick for two weeks and she set up zoom, gave me extensions, and really just cares more about you being okay. Her lectures are interesting and her weekly assignments are easy if you pay attention in class.
Flannery is super nice and knowledgeable about her subject. When the class was struggling with learning the material she restructured how the class worked for the rest of the year and allowed lots of opportunities for makeup and extra credit. REL 101 is a tough class but Francis Flannery is a great professor.
Dr. Flannery is a nice person. She records all of her lectures ahead of time and then plays them for the class, which I can't tell whether or not I like, as theyre sometimes all over the place. Nonetheless, the tests are often easier than I thought they would be. Tests are half multiple choice and essay, with out of class quizzes often.
Really really sweet and very clearly interested in the material. Her tests are hard but if you study you'll be fine. Most kids don't like her cause she can be a bit unorganized at times but she is genuinely a really awesome prof. The textbook is probably not something you have to buy, we use it maybe 4 times the whole semester.
This professor was sweet, however, her lectures were very unorganized. You will watch pre-recorded lectures in class that she recorded from years ago. They are very confusing. The tests are difficult and the study guides barely help, as they include random words and are pages long that even have some words multiple times. would not take again.
She cared and wants you to do well, very passionate about her subject, but teaches through prerecorded lectures. You have to write a few papers but she usually extended deadlines if you ask. There's a zoom option which is really nice.
Dr. Flannery is one of the sweetest and most caring people I have ever met, she cares for her students so much and absolutely loves what she teaches. She gives great feedback and is very accessible out of class. You are graded on 3 tests and 3-4 papers and lecture quizzes, the tests are difficult but for how good of a professor she is, take her.
Seemed knowledgeable and passionate about the topic, but sometimes came off rude, passive aggressive, and talked down on me when I asked questions. All of her lectures were pre recordings from previous years that she played in class. There are 6 paper tests through out the semester, relatively difficult, as well as just a lot of work for a GenEd.
She's a probably a great professor for courses that are required within a religion major...not so much for a GEN ED course. A lot of homework, if you miss a reading or lecture you're screwed, 2 major papers that are intense, a lot of homework. If you want the workload of a REAL GEN ED course, don't take her...
Passionate for sure; however she tends to make her class a political soapbox and really distracts from the class. While everyone is entitled to their opinion it doesn't serve anyone any good for a five minute Trump bashing session. Get that you don't like him, but it doesn't belong in the class. Not what my tuition pays for.
Quizzes are all online—very caring and understanding. Yes lecture heavy - but she prepares you well. Lovely professor.
Dr. Flannery is AMAZING!! One really big paper/presentation, 3 exams which are open notes, and some quizzes. She is so knowledgable and very kind when it comes to needing more time. Very interesting lectures and gives you a totally different view on life. Highly recommend if you're in IA or REL student. Take her!!!
She is very unorganized and does not fully explain the magnitude of the assignments in person. You could miss the whole semester and still get a good grade from reading online. It's not an easy A definitely but attainable if you have the drive.
Dr. Flannery is nice but for a 101 this class required SO MUCH work. She is sweet and passionate about the subject. Do the readings, takes notes on EVERYTHING she says, review the study guide. 6 tests (lowest dropped, no cumulative final), 2 papers, and participation lecture quizzes. willing to change class to accommodate struggling students
If I could go back and not take her class I would.U think it's an easy class until you get home from class & see that there's a hour and a half video lecture posted for us to watch. She rambles off topic so much that you don't learn everything u need for the final. Oh and for my class she showed up 20 min late for the final no apology no extra time.
Very passionate about what she teaches, but a bit much for a Gen ed. Nevertheless, she is extremely caring and understanding to her students' needs. Work is not too difficult if you actually try, pay attention, and take notes on everything.
She seemed nice in the beginning but then just got worse and worse. If I needed help on something I would be talked down upon, also very passive aggressive. Rambles on about things off topic and lectures are extremely confusing to understand. Never got a single study guide for anything.Bad
Dr. Flannery is extremely knowledgable and passionayte about religion. However, there is a LOT or work for a gened class in my opinion. She can be very scattered-brained and rambles about unrealted topics. I never went to class because it was just not helpful. She was 20 mins late to the final with no apology. Would reccomend if you do the work.
She's very disorganized, which makes the class much harder than it needs to be. She's kind and funny and clearly knowledgeable about the subject at hand, but all that is degraded by her lackluster lecturing. A lot of personal tangents and marginally related stories. I would recommend the class because its so unique and relevant.
She is very disorganized and makes the class 10x harder than it needs to be. She lectures all of class and then expects you to watch a hour long online lecture before the next class. Not good at explaining things but If you don't understand or need help, she gets annoyed and talks down to you.
This professor assigns an overwhelming amount of homework and papers every week. There are always readings, assignments, and essays due at the same time. On top of that, her lectures are incredibly confusing and hard to follow. It is a lot of work for a GenEd and she tries very hard to get you to minor in Religion. 10/10 do not reccomend.
So glad that she's leaving JMU. Would give so much work for a gen ed class. On top of that she is unbelievably lazy which is exhibited by her using prerecorded video lectures from years ago instead of professing the class herself. Not too hard of a grade if you do the work but I would never recommend taking her if she comes back to teaching college
**REL 366** She was very disorganized and would frequently not post assignments until right before they were due. She would also not discuss assignments in class and how to complete them until right before they were due. Super unclear on expectations and not helpful outside of class.
