she is a easy going teacher, but a lot of papers.
nice lady and good teacher, easy easy grader
interesting class. easy.
She's easy enough and interesting enough, runs a good solid class. I just wish she had offered more insight as a social worker to the material (Family studies). Brought in a guest speaker that was awesome.
The class is interesting and she reads off her over head lecture notes. Class can get a little boring but it is easy. Lots of busy work. Two multiple choice exams, 2 group in class assignments, a three part paper each part 3+ pages, In class movie analysis. assignments are busy work and not hard just time consuming. I recommend her highly.
She is a easy professor but a good. I recommend her.
Francis is an easy instructor. She doesn't require a lot. BUT she does have pretty rambling lectures. The lectures weren't very clear because of this and I found myself skipping the class and just reading the book. She also does not have good control over the class which can be annoying. She is very nice though.
Extremely easy...but there was a lot of her talking about...nothing relating to the class. I just read the book and did ok. Just do the few assignments!
i was really looking forward to this class, but its a bit disappointing. if you want an easy class, take it with her. class is supposed to go from 530-910, most like this have one 15min break.. this class starts at 540, you are given two breaks totaling about 35 mins, and get out at 845. text is $145. take it online, save some time!
I didn't hate her. I just felt that she rambled a lot and could have done a much better job controlling the class.
She may be a nice person, but she is the worst professor I have ever encountered. Her slides are useless for learning and may just lead to confusion. Mandatory, sign in class activities because if not, her class would be completely empty. Rambling is a understatement! Not worth my money or time. Take it with anyone else if you can.
Prfsr Stehle seems to know a lot about the subject. Her Marriage and Intimacy class was really easy and she's really nice and helpful with studying for the tests.
Lectures are hard to follow, many questions on quizzes are not found anywhere-PowerPoint slides, lecture, or text, so ask her questions if you cannot find them! Frances is alright, but very clearly pushes her politics upon the students. I am here for an education, not to listen to political views! Just make sure to go to every class, bc she gives answers on class you would never get anywhere else. Good luck!
This class was very boring and was not organized well. Half of the time students did not know how to complete assigments. The proffessor is nice, but you do not need to attend this class as long as you turn in the papers.
Frances was a great teacher. It would have been nice if the class was more interactive, but it was a hybrid, so our in class time was limited
I can't believe so many people said she was easy! There was a RIDICULOUS amount of busy work in this class. I feel like I learned very little but spent a LOT of time doing random things. It was a class on US society and the readings were completely random. She seems like a nice lady, but I would not take another class from her
Hybrid class, so be weary of small discussions online that are due at certain times during the week. A lot of busy work--small assignments due throughout. Topic is interesting, so why is the class not?
Hybrid class-instructor was well educated and always prepared. Not very clear on projects however. All together, I would recommend her.
Disorganized, material scattered in too many different readings, links, and videos-that locating the required materials was time consuming or proved unavailable. Correct due dates and syllabus wasn't posted until several weeks into the term. Quirky, unlear expectations. Disjointed d2l set up.
I took 2 soc classes from Prof Stehle Winter 2013.U.S. Society was very interesting. We learned about food ind: agribusiness etc. theories of rationalization. issues in educ., in finance sect, child abuse, foster care Problems that affect parenting. I liked content. Workload was fairly hiGH, but worth it.The course was set up well -weekly modules.
I took 2 soc courses from Professor Stehle in Winter 2013. Weekly modules all set up on D2L. The intro class used regular textbook, but with a lot of multimedia. 4 easy quizzes,-drop lowest two. Midterm and final were challenging, but I studied got A's. Weekly summary papers& discussions were interesting-helped me to understand our sociey!
I really got a lot out of the class. I'm a freshman who had taken psychology classes but this helped me to understand people in the context of the society. I understand so much more now. The class was interesting as it used a lot of multimedia. It kept my attention. The instructor replied right away to any questions.
I took this class just as an elective. I never even knew what sociology was before this course, and now I am interested in a lot of the subject matter. It was a decent amount of work, but I feel like I had a good experience and learned a lot (this was my first online class). The teacher was available when you had a question and responded.
Great class. A lot of writing but easy to do, because she wants to know how the assignment affects you. I would recommend this class to everyone.
For a 200 level course, there is a work load. I once signed up for it and dropped it because of the work load. I eventually signed up for it and glad I didn't drop the course. This professor is well-organized and for the work load, I learned more than I expected to. Highly recommend this class. Easy A if you read the book and keep up with the work.
I would not recommend this course to anyone with a life outside of college. The course itself has easy material that is retainable, but I found the class to be completely disorganized and sometimes took longer than the assignment to figure out what the teacher was looking for. The work load amount is insane and is all busy work.
Professor Stehle was great. She made the class interesting, yet didn't dumb it down. I learned so much more than I usually do due to the way she has students engage with the material and concepts. The course was very well organized on D2L-no problems finding things. I will take more classes from her.
This class was 100% busy work. Many online classes are like that, but this was ridiculous. Something like 4 discussion posts, 2 essays and a quiz or exam every single week. Might not have been so bad had any of the assignments been interesting. Also, many questions or direction were vague or confusing, which caused assignments to take even longer.
Eyes wide open now! Great class and I recommend it. Professor Stehle created a class that really gets to the heart of being a minority in this country. I learned about the history, prejudices, stereotypes, but all in a senior level and intense class.
Great teacher and class. It really kept my interest and I ended up learning a lot about sociology. You do have to keep up with the weekly work, but that structure helped me.
I'm taking an online class with Professor Stehle and she is amazing. I feel like if I need help, I am able to contact her despite not seeing her in an actual class.
Quick responses to e-mails and good feedback. The assignments and readings are easy enough, but there are a LOT of deadlines each week. You need to stay organized and complete everything on a schedule to get an A. The teacher's weekly notes are thorough, sometimes a little rambling though.
This class has so much writing! So, just be prepared. There was a discussion every week as well as weekly papers (and I do mean EVERY week). There were also two other essays focusing on various topics. Frances is always available for questions and you can skip two discussions and papers as well. There's also chances for extra credit. Good class!
Best online class I've ever taken. There are papers due every week however the information is interesting and a lot of the writing is reflective. Included a lot of TED talks and documentaries along with readings. Quiz's and Tests were very fair. This teacher was available at all times via email and gave thoughtful and helpful feedback on work.
Course is 11 weeks of content 4 if you take it online in the summer. Be prepared for that. HOWEVER, I have to say that Frances was INCREDIBLY clear, forward, and helpful. Emailed weekly, if not every other day, had fair deadlines, understood it was a lot of work. It's worth it. If you keep in contact, she'll help you out. Firm, but way fair.
Very engaged. I would recommend any class Frances offers.
I call this instructor, Professor But Wait There's More, ans there is always more. I have emailed her several times, I have received one reply. NO help there.
This was one of the best teachers I've ever had. There is a lot of reading required for SOC 310, but don't let that stop you. The material is interesting. Frances gives very specific feedback on all of the assignments. I really enjoyed this class.
Professor Stehle is the best professor I've ever taken an online course with. She is very organized, clear and specific about what she expects, and has a consistent assignment schedule which is substantial but accessible. Readings were interesting and topics weren't hard to dive into at all. I loved the course and I love Prof. Stehle!
This was one of the best classes I've taken. It kept my interest due to a good textbook, articles, documentaries, TED talks, etc. The discussions were thought provoking. Professor Stehle was very engaged and helpful; she responds right away to emails and has phone availability.
I've taken 3 online classes from Frances now - all GREAT, SOC337U, 314, 419. She provides notes each week that serve as a lecture with supplemental material and textbook reading. Interact with classmates through weekly discussions, and submit a weekly paper to synthesize the week's material. Gives good feedback, readily available for questions.
I love Professor Stehle. This is my second online course with her and I continue to be quite happy with her and her organization. She's consistent, clear, and well structured in the way she organizes her online courses. Course material is interesting and topical. Best online professor at Portland State - hands down.
I liked everything about this course and professor! The material was interesting. The workload was about right for a 400-level class.
Fantastic instructor, very clear with instructions. No tests, but there are several short papers and discussions due, so you will learn the material. Do the assignments and you will do well. She is available for questions and gives a lecture notes sheet each week. Great class.
She is awesome, I took a 2nd class of hers, mainly b/c she taught it. There is time-consuming homework but I wouldn't say "a lot" of homework. She's clear, quick to respond, enthusiastic, and the materials were very interesting and there was a lot of materials outside the text which was a major plus.
This class was fantastic. I enjoyed this class immensely, the work is not insanely hard, but it does challenge you. The policy on late work for papers was a life saver, and she lets you skip some work too, so that was awesome. This class is really worth it if you want to learn about the issues dealing with mental illness and have fun along the way.
Amazing professor
Love her, fair but makes you earn it
I really enjoyed this class and I learned a lot about mental health and women. I enjoyed Stehle as well. She actually answers emails and offers extra credit that is worth more than 1 point. If reading is not your thing don't take this class. There are weekly discussions, weekly exams, and two major quizzes. Some weeks there are two discussions.
I loved this class, she assigns really interesting and inspiring reading. She expects you to work but not so much that you are pulling your hair out. If you do well and actually engage with the material you will get a good grade. She is an inspirational teacher that assigns tough reading material that really makes you think.
Thoroughly enjoyed Prof. Stehle and her genders class. Two inexpensive books and she provides the rest online. Her quizzes give you chapter numbers for reference. Some weeks, there can be a lot of reading - so time management is a must. She gives great feedback and clear expectations. Very responsive to questions. Will take again if possible.
Really enjoyed Frances Stehle's WS 306 class. Every assignment was in detail and she was available whenever I needed clarification. I was able to communicate with her through D2L email with no problem. She was very thoughtful in her feedback. If another opportunity comes up, I would take another class by her.
Taken two web classes with Frances. Both fascinating and engaging. Time management is a must, and I recommend reading the BOOKS as soon as possible. Weekly readings/articles/films are provided online, along with usual stuff and a larger project (paper or "blog"). Frances is thoughtful and encouraging. Do not take her class lightly.
Out of all the online courses I've taken she's the best instructor. Very clear grading rubric, good amount of weekly assignments, and quizzes are straight forward. There's a lot of reading but that's a given for an online course. Overall, I would take another class with her again.
Prof. Stehle is awesome. Class is straightforward, quizzes come with chapter references, and the discussion boards aren't the worst compared to most online classes. I will have taken 3 classes with her and am happy that she is in my field of study. Take her for an easily earned A, if you put some effort into the work.
Frances is a real gem. She cares about her student's success and gives valuable feedback for each weakly assignment. Beware there is a lot of reading in this class, but about the second or third week you will get used to it. I have taken Frances twice and loved her each time. I just wish there were more teachers out there like her. Take her class!
Great professor! Shes a very understandable and lenient grader. She knows that a lot of people are taking her class as a jr cluster; therefore, she doesnt put you on a pedestal and expect you to be an expert on the subject matter.
Even though it was an Online class, I can say that the articles she gave us were really interesting and filled the expectations of what this class was about, she has a clear grading criteria plus she is also really understandable and down to earth when it comes to giving feedbacks which, BTW are, in fact, helpful and detailed.
Really enjoyed this class and teacher. Real life experience. a LOT of work (long papers, discussions online, tests) but I learned a ton
She was really awesome! The workload is a little intense, but she is a really fair grader, and always gives good feedback. As long as you do all the assignments and put in effort you should do well. I would take her again in the future.
My favorite online professor I have had so far! Clearly is organized on D2L, there is usually a paper and a discussion due every week -- three different weeks you can choose from an online quiz or the paper. She also allows for you to skip one weekly paper (you can do it for extra credit) and one discussion for the term. Absolutely loved this class
Has to be one of my favorite online classes I've taken. I would say it's an easy A, but you still have to work for it. There is quite a bit of writing, however, if you do the reading, watch the videos that she assigns, and participate, you will pass. She also has the clearest grading criteria/expectations of any teacher I've taken so far.
really loved this class. a good amount of homework, but you learn a lot and as long as you do the work according to the instruction she will give you full credit. several quizzes, weekly papers, discussions and 2 short papers (2-3 pages). lots of work but you learn a lot. she rewards you well for keeping up with assignments.
Stehle's class was well-structured, with alternating weekly quizzes and papers. We also had two term papers, but there were clear guidelines. It felt like the prof was very hands-off with teaching, and that the class became more about answering specific questions to get full points rather than learning and applying the material.
The first week of class I was worried about the pace of the class but as time passed I started to feel more comfortable. This class was by far my favorite in the term. But warning there is a lot of reading and writing but the topics are interesting to read so if you don't mind I really recommend it! This professor is really great. :)
I learned so much in Frances class. Great instructor. Timely grading and feedback. Weekly papers and discussion posts and a few open book quizzes that she gives you two chance to get your best grade. Attendance of an AA meeting and follow up paper also required. She is easy to communicate with and seems to care about her students and their success
The textbook is extremely dated and this class felt like I was learning inaccurate information. The book is biased and speaks down about addicts, women, and BI&POC. I talked to the teacher who was nice, but brushed me off. I spoke with the head of the department to also be brushed off. I changed majors after this class.
Loved this class. It was completely online, no lectures, but her weekly notes and group discussions made it really interesting and feel like a class. The reading were great and the weekly papers really helped me grasp the material (even though they were long) She gives really encouraging and thoughtful feedback. Really interesting material.
Read the book, participate and watch lectures and take notes and you'll do great. This class is interesting and the professor is a good, fair grader.
Very fair grader, and she's sweet. Middle-of-the-road workload for a junior cluster. Don't wait until the last minute on the weekly paper. Overall I liked this class a lot, but I did pay for a textbook that seems outdated and has major typos in it.
This class was an online course for UNST. It consisted of reading 4-6 articles and writing a weekly paper, along with a discussion post and 2 responses. There's also 3 blog posts. If you don't like to read/write a lot I would re-consider this class. She does give you specific q's to answer per paragraph. An easy A if you have good time management.
She gives a lot of detailed feedback, the expectations for the week are generally clear. The work she assigns can be tedious. The discussions feel like short papers when you are already assigned an actual paper with the discussions. Says you only have to write 6 papers over the 11-week period, but there's actually 9.
Frances is just an eh professor, the material isn’t hard but just make sure you get everything in on time. She’s a stickler for on time work and her rubric, but isn’t super accessible outside of class and isn’t really clear when she does respond. 1/10 I wouldn’t recommend, but if you must take her class, just be on top of everything
Prof Stehle is a very kind person & gives very clear instructions & feedback. However, I do NOT recommend you take this class if ur also taking a capstone.10 essays. 9 essays that end up being 3-4 regular spaced pages WEEKLY. Weekly discussion + 2 responses which is very similar to the essay. 1 point off every week it's late though.Quizzes biweekly
I enjoyed this class, Gender and Sexualities, so much! As a member of the LGBTQ community, I felt the class provided both scholarly and popular source content that was inclusive. The videos added to the written content well. The course was well-organized, interesting, and I am looking forward to taking other classes with Professor Stehle.
Prof Stehle has very clear grading criteria and seems to be an easy grader. However, the workload is intense. 5-7 page papers, a discussion post and two responses on the discussion board EVERY week. Plus an occasional quiz. Seems to forget that students have lives, take other classes and often work. Way too much work for a 4 credit class.
She's nice but workload is insane. Says papers won't be more than 2 pgs every wk but it's really 5-7. Thought she gave good feedback until compared. She copy and pastes the same thing to everyone if you meet the word reqs. Quizzes very easy. Content very interesting. Would of been better if I didn't stress about a paper and disc due every week.
This is my second to last quarter of undergrad as a psych major sociology minor and this class was more work than any class I've taken. Theres a weekly paper due every week that requires you to read two textbook chapters, articles up to 25 pages, and watch videos that can be up to 2 hrs long. On top of this is weekly discussions and a final paper.
They seem really kind and responsive but the weekly papers made this course pretty stressful. It's unfortunate that the workload takes away from the content because the reading is actually super interesting, but for the sake of time you end up skimming for the parts that answer the paper prompts. If you have the time though you could learn a lot.
10 papers requiring 1000+ words for the term. Weekly discussion posts and responses on top of that. I can tell she put a lot of effort into creating the class and teaching content, and she gave nice feedback, but it was just SO MUCH reading and writing. The content itself was not difficult, but the workload is extremely tedious. Take with caution.
I loved this class! I was surprised to read complaints about workload. I spent about 5 hours a week, about right for an online class. There were 9 weekly papers (Week 5 was a break, super helpful for midterms). Quizzes were easy, straight from the book. I enjoyed this class and the structure and am taking another class from Professor Stehle..
Frances is nice and a good grader. I haven't taken any other class with her so I don't know if the work load is the same for other classes but be prepared for a lot of homework. I would recommend only taking 8 credits with this class because any higher you would have no time do do all the work. loved the class/prof but not workload
Overall a perfectly fine professor. I am taking an online course, and my assignments have been submitted late fairly regularly but I write good papers so it balances out. My biggest gripe is docking points for lateness when our submissions are not graded on a consistent schedule, and most often provide a delayed response.
this class was super awesome. it is a lot of reading and writing, but its super interesting. frances was great
