Can be hard to understand. His lectures are straight out of the textbook, and keeps repeating ideas, and ends up falling behind in lectures. Easy tests, easy marker, large portion of marks on dicussions. If you want a good mark take this class.
Nice guy - as long as you do your readings and keep up with the Chapter assignments, you'll do fine. The multiple choice questions are right from the readings - easy stuff! He is very helpful, answers questions to the point and always wears a smile!
Very kind teacher/read the chapter and do practice quizes that are provided online(instructions come w/ the textbook. He is a fairly easy marker and tests and paper broken down fairly
Teaches straight from the book without adding any personal thoughts. Easy to get marks from discussions. Unhelpful commentary on essays.
Nice guy but not able to teach
No Comments
Teaches straight out of the book so there is absolutely no need to hear his lectures. This is great in that tests are fairly straight forward but negitive in that he offers no personal insight/perspective. He's also a pretty dry lecturer. Nice man though.
He is hard to understand, and very boring! Very unpredictable in regards to tests! I wouldn't recommend this class, it was a waste of my time.
He's alright, a bit of a ****-but ok. He teaches right out of the text. Gives low participation marks to those who even participate on a regular basis. He hates teaching College level. Thinks college students lack motivation. Got a 'B' afterall.
He's a pretty nice guy and he's pretty clear in his teaching. His classes are straight out of the textbook and are pretty boring. The tests are easy if you give the text a once over. Class would be a lot better if he put effort into making it interesting.
He is "the essence" of brutal teaching
omg, you might as well call this guy DICTATOR ABIEW! Its either his way or the hi-way! Forget what you read in the text cuz it wont be on the exam! Very unfair, not even willing to discuss the possibility that he could have made a mistake. Will not change
Show up, do readings, participate regularly, ask for help if you need it, review and study before exams = good grade. Easy formula! Good guy, interesting, helpful, friendly. No one should get a bad grade in this class if you do the work required.
Alright, basically in this class you'll learn more about how dictators run a classroom rather than a country! Im taking the class again with a different proffesor!
"in essence" DONT PICK THIS TEACHER! his 3 hour classes are hell. DONT ASK QUESTIONS cause he cant answer theM . goes on and on about what you read EXACTLY from the text book. someone get him a class of water becase he "pecks" his head
Good instructor - interesting class. Hard exams.
So easy, yet so so boring
Count how many times he says "In Essence" I timed it, 37 times in 30 minutes. Dont ask a question, if your LUCKY he'll answer it and then carry on for 10 minutes, if not, you'll just get ten minutes without an answer. HORRIBLE prof, DONT TAKE
you cant understand a word hes saying
Francis is a nice guy but man...in 15 years of classes this is the first class i skipped more classes than I went to. He is a really nice guy though.
Notes are straight from the text and are VERY disorganized. 90% of the class has given up on taking notes from lectures and began to take notes from the text during class. Very stubborn when it comes to reviewing marks on exams. Avg. first midterm: 41%
Material covered is right out of the text, and there are no surprises on tests. Midterm, final are short (1.5hr), and so is the term paper (5pgs). Lots of people had a hard time like me. He's particular in his tests, but you'll learn A LOT in class!
Very nice guy. His lectures are straight from the text so it makes studying for his tests alot easier. Tests are pretty simple, for the essay just spit out information from the notes and text, don't put in your own ideas. Pretty easy class, I got an A.
I think he just started teachin and hes just getting the hang of it.Read the book, front to back&remember the examples.Answer the ?s thoroughly&see him for advice on the essays.**REITERATE**everything he says on the exams&essays
not interested in anyones opinion if it's not identical to his. confuses the class and teaches straight from the book. no effort to help students. i was dissapointed
You shouldn't pick this teacher. You understand nothing. The answers to your questions are no answers at all. If you plan to read the book only you will do better.
Arrogant.
Not the worst teacher, but definitely far from being one of the best.Lectures are boring and dry,no humor is ever involved. This prof.is also VERY demanding when it comes to marking, and is one of the least generous markers.Interesting subject made boring :(
good prof, he is tough but fair. Like all things in life, if you work hard in his class you will do well!
fair teacher, he is strict but he is fair, if you attend his classes you can do well.
frustrating course. hard to stay awake. he lectures straight from the text, almost word for word sometimes. very uncomfortable setting
heavy accent. unforgiving marker. lectures are just a regurgitation of the textbook. bad at answering questions--long winded. avoid him if you can. he also didn't give our class a break, but would finish after an hour and a half, instead of 2 hours.
HE can't teach, goes all over the place in his freaking lectures, and does NOT make himself available for help. Has a strong accent, but can't blame him for that. Unorthodox, unstructured and confusing sums up this guy
Unbelievable boring lectures from the textbook. Not available for help outside of class. Picks on students during class. Unforgiving marker. DO NOT take this class with him.
I really liked this teacher and class, it started off a little rocky but then it got really interesting and we had great discussions, he was always available for help and he was very knowledgable.
A great teacher once he gets into the course, very interesting debates and discusions. I recomend him highly.
THe guy is not a good teacher. Firstly u can not understand him which I can't blame him for but the person who hired him. 2nd his idea of notes are RANDOM words on the board if u get stuch w/ his class u are better off @ home reading the text.****TEY!
he is the most confusing teacher in kwantlen, you say you can do well if u attend all his classes ? well if u rip a piece of paper out of ur book be prepard 4 a D. I was at every class go 89% on my essay and got a D , go figure
GREAT PROF - very knowlegable, very helpful. Serious about his teaching and expects a lot from his students. If you work hard you will earn a good grade. Seems people are quite hard on him here and I'm not sure why. not unreasonable. very nice guy.
Hes a totally bad prof...is not helpful at all and completely unreasonable....if in a discussion he does not agree with what ur saying he will make it clear by the look he gives u..do not take him at all...i would not recommend him because he is completely rude and unfair!!!!!
quite unfair. Too many uh's and reads right from the text. I wouldnt recommend him at all.
I think that this professor alright..i mean if u study u will most likely do well in his class...first 2 exams are multiple choice...juss study everythin and take ur own notes cuz his lectures r STRAIGHT from the book..overall alrite teacher...u need to b good at talkin out loud infront of th class
he is hard to understand

Really unhelpful and hard to understand. If you have him as a teacher, GET ANOTHER ONE!!!
His tests are m/c for first two tests and third is m/c and essay question. He is really keen on participation. Lectures are boring. They will put you to sleep.!
Not an easy class, but definately interesting. Good instructor, very helpful - works from the text, so if you do readings you will succeed. Likes lots of class participation, be ready to talk lots. Friendly, resourceful and very knowlegable. Recommend this instructor highly.
Not an easy class, but definately interesting. Good instructor, very helpful - works from the text, so if you do readings you will succeed. Likes lots of class participation, be ready to talk lots. Friendly, resourceful and very knowlegable. Recommend this instructor highly.
his methods are strict, but if you come to class wanting to learn about poli sci and the inner workings yes, he is great!! but if you come in with a defeated attitude this class is hell...but keep in mind what he is teaching is exactly what he is there for to teach..Poli-Sci not Fine-Arts, my advice is make alot of use from the text,ALOT!
ONE WORD- AWFUL! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! TRUST ME ON THIS ONE! CAN'T SAY NO ONE WARNED YOU!
If you study, its pretty darn easy. Kind of boring though.
I really enjoyed his classes and teaching style, and found him very knowledgeable and interesting. However there were many in the class who really didn't, but that is probably because they weren't interested in the class. Also, be prepared to discuss and speak in class, if you don't, he'll single you out.
he is a horrible professor, he couldn't teach to save his life. thankfully, if you read and understand the textbook you will do well. his tests are exactly from the book. if tries to teach but if you listen to him you will get confused. so dont listen. he will expect you to have an opinion and voice it.
This class was so boring. All he does is tell you waht is in the text. No teaching at all, just reading. He is the worst teacher ever. Hard marker and expects you to know stuff he doesn't even teach! Do not take him!
he doesnt know what hes talking about. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!
WORST PROF AT KWANTLEN! I'VE HAD GOOD PROFS, AND BAD, BUT HE'S THE WORST BY FAR! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
His lectures were disorganized, he said "what have you", "in effect", and "uh" way too many times, it makes absolutely no sense and no connections in his lectures. The best way to to get better score is stick to the textbook and don't try too hard to comprehend what he just said.
He makes no time for you, never helps with essays, is not very easy to understand, but simple tests
He does not care about his students. He will not see you outside of office hours which are once a week for 3 hours. He doesn't even want to talk to you during break and he won't respond to e-mail. He's abrasive and condesending. Everybody dislikes him immensely avoid him like the plague.
I would not recommend this teacher to anyone. His teaching style is okay and his marking is efficient. However his testing style is terrible. Its impossible to do well unless your a political science major. Even when our whole class is failing the blame is put on us for since "Some people are getting A's and you should be able to put in that effort
He is not a very helpful teacher. His lectures are faulty and his tests are incredibly hard. DO NOT take any classes with him, he's a incompetent imbecile.
This class is like watching paint dry while having your brain beaten to a pulp by poor grammar, nonsensical phrases, and repetition. Read the book, and make sure you have 4 hours of good tunes on your Ipod every week.
A boring fellow, but not the horrific war criminal everybody else seems to think he is. He could stand to be clearer and less abrasive, but hey, I got an A, so you don't hear me complaining. Everybody else should try getting a life. His class simply isn't that hard. Incredibly boring, yes, hard, no.
Probably the worst teacher I've ever had. He reads straight from the textbook during lectures, his tests are incredibly hard, and his accent is very thick and its hard to understand what he is saying. Also, he says "for instance" 18 times in two minutes. He favours students who speak in class, and if you don't, he talks to you as if ur an idiot.
what an incredible teacher, his knowledge is so deep. His background boggles my mind. always has his door open and likes interaction in class. keep with it, you will learn so much if you want to learn..if you dont then you wont
Great teacher and person. I have no idea what people are complaining about. He is an easy marker and easy to understand once you have had a few lectures by him.
Very helpful, easy to understand. Follow the syllabus, attend lectures and do readings and you will have no problems in the class... His expectations seem high, but he is fair and very interesting to listen to. Encourages lots of class participation and is always willing to engage in a friendly class discussion or debate about curriculum topics.
If you are taking this course for an easy grade, you will not like this professor. Pay attention, talk in class, and you'll do fine. He is very knowledgeable in Political Science. He marks papers as though it is written for an advanced class though, so be prepared to know how to write a research paper. I would take him again.
I should have listened to all of the other posts, he is the WORST prof Ive ever had . he looks down on his students has a severe attitude problem . his exams multiple choice questions are from left field, DONT TAKE HIS CLASS, ull feel like youre being tortured
His teaching styles suck! I being a disabled individual in his class and treated unfairly at times. i have been intimated by his facial responses with in class and being laughed amongs other students in his actions. He is very rude professor when it comes to needing help in his class. For a person with a physical disability he likes to pick on m
Terrible. He's not the worst teacher I've ever had but it's close. At least for MY class, the lectures lacked direction and often dragged on and on and on. He gets angry when people lose attention (due to his ineptitude) and then hammers down on bad class conduct. I actually like the subject; it's an interesting class. His lecture style just sucks
Francis Abiew is only for those who want to learn. He makes extra efforts to make sure that students who show an interest are getting the maximum benefit from the class. His knowledge is so wide that once you will leave his class you will realize that no other proff. can compare to him. I am sure many students(including me)have been motivated by him
All I have to say is WOW. For a man who has a doctorate, and a degree in law, he is very hard to understand. He does not engage the class at all. He is very condescending to the students, and talks down to them all the time. He may be a scholar, but as a Professor, he gets an F. He should go back to studying law because he cant teach dnttake hi
Wow is he ever terrible. Maybe its the late night classes but he is hard to listen to when he lectures the whole 3 hours. I end up playing farmville and ignoring him, casually adding the nod here are there. I dont recommended him. Maybe for students who really want to learn and can handle his intimidating facial expressions. Not for me.
His expectations were too high for an intro course. He talks down to his students and over-explains basic concepts. You will often hear him say "DO YOU GET IT?" Despite being quite interested in the course, I found his lectures unbearable. It was much easier to learn from the textbook. Avoid if possible.
For a Political Science Teacher his views towards certain topics are biased and his narrow-mindedness make you not want to learn from him. Plus hes a jerk :)
for a first year student, this was the worse teacher i could have taken. AVOID! he makes no sense and definately mumbles his words and fades out his answer when talking to you. for an easy question he will make it so difficult and avoid answering the initial question.even if you want to learn its pretty much impossible.
Terrible prof. Incredibly hard to understand, constantly goes off tangent and demeans students.
He's incredibly hard to understand. That's probably because he's from Ghana, but still. I sometimes just read Cyanide and Happiness comics or blog/twitter half the class.
Horrible, hard to understand, by the end of term 5 people remained in class and only 1 passed. He favourites one, and despises others
Really bad teacher! Cant understand him at all. Treats his students poorly. Expects you to participate in class but if you say the wrong answer or ask a "dumb" question he looks down on you. Very intimidating.
god this guy cannot talk clearly and doesnt even go over all material in class...coming to class is a waste of time! and hes a really hard marker too!!! soo picky!
the worst prof ive ever had! he is so unclear of what he says, skips chapters at a time and tests you on it, and plays favorites. STAY AWAY. this prof will fail you for FUN.
Listen to these comments, he is not a good proff. He is very unclear and rude when it comes to tests. Avoid at all costs!!!
i came into this class interested in world politic i gave my opinion in a class discussion and from that point on never talked in class he will put u down if it doesnt fit his bias hes sooo unclear he talks to himself and has no office hours and doesnt respond to emails
Wow, Francis Abiew is not only the worst prof at Kwantlen, but the worst prof of my life. He is rude, arrogant, and unclear about what he wants. He uses material not taught in his course or in the textbook for his tests. He singles students out and insults their intelligence. He marks way too hard and he refuses to respond to emails from students.
Francis is a wealth of knowledge and has a clear passion for his subject. Tests are not difficult but right out of his lectures, which are right out of the textbook. He also gives hints in class as to what might be on the test. If you want to do well, try studying. His tests are mainly essay questions. Figure it out... this isn't high school.
Very intimidating, and very strict. Little or no tolerance. Seems very egotistical and self-centered and will refuse to respond to students emails. As it's an intro course I don't know why he would be so abrasive. Do not take his class as he is a poor representation of what Poli Sci is.
Terrible, disrespectful, offensive, discouraging(very), unfaithful, bully(needs to attend anti bullying classes ASAP), needs teaching lessons, and to conclude he is overall a terrible human being.
Terrible professor. I have the joy of comparing him to some of Kwantlen's finest, and he is the furthest from it imaginable. Abiew is condescending, arrogant and abrasive. Relies on the book more than his lectures; often leaving very important details out which may leave them skimmed not studied. I highly recommend avoiding his class at all costs.
Francis abiew is the worst teacher i have ever had. he is biased in his marking, does not give good notes, and picks on individuals. this is an INTRO course, yet he expect everyone to know everything about the political world. he needs a wake up call, and some lessons on teaching. i would NOT reccomend him to anyone. EVER. stay away..
this was my first year, never would i have thought that i would meet a professor that is proclaimed to be as evil as protrayed in films. francis is a bully. he picks 2 or 3 kids in a class and makes them feel stupid, and picks on them. he is biased in every way possble. and if you corrcect him he will make you feel like an idiot. avoid at all costs
It is my first semester in university, I keep up with the readings and I don't slack off. This guy is a BULLY he actually made me CRY in class. He really focuses on putting his students down if they have a different opinion or if they have human error. I dread going to class every week. Whatever you do DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM! :O
Worst teacher so far.dreaded going to his class every week. Accent makes it hard to understand what he's actually saying. interesting topic, boring teacher. like everyone else has said, he is a bully, and i read the textbook prior to class every week. opinions are encouraged, but when given, are often put down... don't take this class with francis!
HORRIBLE INSTRUCTOR!
I thought he was OK. I did see him ream out some other students though. Just be diligent to follow his instructions and you should do alright.
not a good teacher id highly recomend you to avoid uses way too many big words. is not clear at all and jumps all over the place. highly do not recomend as a intro class
I have taken a number of classes with this prof, he is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. I am now a graduate and still I go to him to discuss worldly topics, and just in general keep in touch. He remains friendly and interested in how his students have done. If you're willing to put the effort in, he is the best.
Fairly Easy, essay is worth lots, hard to understand and quite condescending, but still helpful and friendly. Very knowledgeable prof. Can get good grade if you put time into essay and read text
Teacher is VERY hard to understand. Has a attitude that he is better than you. Very condescending. Incredibly brilliant however he is not helpful as a teacher. I received decent marks however it was due to my following of the text.
BEWARE! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Hard to understand and doesn't give good instruction for papers. Avoid if you can, but you can still pull a decent mark if you put extra effort in.
This professor is very knowledgeable and will make sure that students who are interested get all the help they need. You can ask anything, e-mail, office. I think he really enjoys talking to students about international politics. You just have to show some interest.
to those who complain that he's a tough marker - you probably skip his class a lot. he's willing to help when you ask for it. Cmon guys, we're in University. Don't expect Kwantlen profs to spoon feed you the grades - you have to work for it. Attend classes, do the readings, and ask questions if you're having difficulty. This is not high school.
Honestly, unlike all the other reviews that I've read on here Dr. Abiew isn't too bad. He's a fair marker when it comes to papers and is a generally pleasant guy; however, his lectures seem to be more geared towards a 3rd year course unlike a 1st year one, which this is. Be prepared for group discussions and lengthy essay questions on tests!
Francis is a very reasonable marker, and as long as you study and attend lectures you will do fine in his classes. There is no reason to get poor marks, he is very willing to clarify concepts if needed, and his tests are straight forward with no surprises. If you take good notes, you'll ace his tests. Avoid If long lectures aren't for you.
He's a very slow lecturer and very rude when students ask questions. We had this one student ask a fairly straight forward question just to clarify what he had said, and he looked at the student and said, "Really. Did you really just ask me that?" Quite frankly, I would have dropped this course the first week if the refund period hadn't changed.
Francis is a nice guy but a tough marker. He is very slow with his lectures and if you follow along with your readings, you find he is far behind with his lectures. Has 3 exams, 1 Essay. Seems a bit strict but he is a kind guy. However I find that if you are a politics lover, he doesn't make you excited for the course unlike some other professors.
Francis' lectures are LONG. He talks from start to finish of class, but if you take good notes and study them, it'll be all you need to ace his tests. Don't bother buying the book! He is also very understanding and wants his students to succeed. I deserved to fail my presentation, but he gave me another chance. Not a lot of profs would do that.
The first class will get you excited but the lectures go a bit downhill from there. He's an easy marker when it comes to the one essay you have to complete in his class and the three tests are relatively easy if you read the textbook. However, his lectures literally put me to sleep on more than one account.
Incredibly knowledgeable and helpful instructor. Take advantage of approaching him and he will help you, he genuinely wants his students to succeed and is very supportive.
He has many years of education and knowledge but fails to understand how to teach the information in a supportive, caring and respectful manner toward students. He insulted a student in class for her opinion that differed from his opinion. He is the worst professor I have encountered in political science.
Lectures and grading criteria lack clarity -and his grading seemed inconsistent. Make sure you have exhausted all other options before going to him for help - he doesn't appreciate lazy questions. He was okay. I might take him again, but I wouldn't suggest him to anyone. Take lots of detailed notes, he tested based on lecture materials.
I can't believe the reviews on here, clearly a lot of students who expect to be handheld in university. Francis is a fantastic instructor who expects that students are in his class to learn. Frankly, I've been in several of his courses and it is him I pity for having so many lazy students who never want to engage or keep up with readings and work.
OOOPSS WHAT TO SAY. HE IS THE HARDEST PROF. I EVER HAD HALF OF THE CLASS DROP THEMSELVES BUT I HAD TO GO THROUGH AS IT WAS A MANDATORY COURSE FOR ME HE IS A REALLY TOUGH GRADER THOUGH DON'T WANT TO GIVE U MARKS ANYWAY HARD ESSAY QUESTIONS NEVER BEEN IN HIS OFFICE HOURS
PLEASE AVOID!!! like legit if you are reading this just do not take this professor! Francis is such a hard marker and constantly makes you feel so dumb if you ask any question in class. Does not make use of powerpoints so it is all chalkboard.
really hard to understand im with his accent, don't miss a class youll fail, he gives lots of long boring lectures and you have to write what he says he barley writes his notes and test are big with him...
First of all, if you do not have a textbook you will fail. His lessons cover maybe 40% of the material and the textbook covers the remaining 60%. His accent is thick and is hard to understand at times, not to mention that everything is on a chalkboard and is organised terribly. At the end of the semester half of the class failed. DO NOT RECOMMEND
This is uni not hs you guys. Dr. Abiew is warmhearted, caring and passionate with what he teaches, he's a real gem. He has quite heavy lectures yet very informative for the tests. Tests aren't hard long as you study text and notes. Its good to study as you need insight for the tests. A prof who wants you to succeed, just ask questions when needed.
if political science interests you and you want to learn more outside the scope of your syllabus, take a class with him. He provides real examples to everything he teaches. He goes at a good pace, and encourages questions. Anyone who has anything negative to say must not be a poli sci major. Hes very strict with due dates, go to class, hand it in
By far one of the worst profs at KPU. He is unclear, his teaching method is outdated (doesn't use moodle/ only uses chalk board in-class) and he does not seem to understand how to teach a first year course. Half the class failed. That's a reflection on the instructor, not the students.
Goes off Topic 60% of the time. Tough Grader, test are confusing
Should not be teaching any first-year courses. Would be an amazing professor for upper-level courses as he is very knowledgeable in his field. He marks and lectures as if students know more than what has been taught. Avoid in your first few political science courses to develop your political science background. Can be intimidating
He seemed to have a chip on his shoulder. Started classes with too high of difficulty level with unreasonable expectations for a 100-level course. But when more than half the class failed the first exam and did poorly on their papers he made his content WAY too easy that it just ended up confusing the ppl who were studying to expect difficulty.
Francis is a gem. He is warmhearted and amazing. He truly cares about the class and whether or not you understand the content. A lot of people in the class didn't do so good because they didn't have the textbook. Textbook is mandatory if you want to do good. He has one essay, two tests, group discussions and no exam. Definitely recommend.
Intelligent/passionate but will set you up for failure. Long, tangent-filled, hard-to-follow lectures. Yells/rolls his eyes at wrong answers then wonders why nobody wants to speak up. Complex essay topics that haven't been covered in syllabus yet for 25% of your mark. Discouraged me from politics and general learning (as a mature honors student!)
Very knowledgable and passionate. Francis is misunderstood and has a teaching culture that is misunderstood. MUST PUT EFFORT, TIME, and visit him during his office hours to connect with him.
Take his class, if you love Fs
Terrible professor. No other way to describe him. When I went to confirm with him what was going to be on the exam he literally only told me just one of the topics. I dont really rate professors but I had to here. Unbelievable
Probably the best prof I've ever had. He really loves what he does, and wants others to succeed. I cant believe some reviews on here, grow up, its university. He truly does want you to succeed, and for this reason, is one of the best profs I've ever had.
rude, not respectful, encourages you to ask questions but just says "as I said before" making you feel dumb, feels like you're in a high school class
internationals don't go for this one. very hard grader. will surely make get an F.
One of the best classes I've taken so far! Dr. Francis is an amazing professor and he explains really well. He is also very intelligent and gives a lot of "extra" information for the class so that we can understand the full scenario. You need to read the textbook and pay attention to his classes (and isn't that the point of being at university?!).
Prof Abiew has been amazing in my opinion. I dont think that people understand how hard he worked to get his PhD and that is why he is very strict. He wants you to work for your grade. Great prof. Recommend if interested in political science.
Francis Abiew does not want to accept your answer, even if you write what he had explained! Stay away from him!
Don't me wrong, he is well respected and very likeable. However, his class made me reevaluate my strengths as a student. The class i took was an introductory class however, it felt like a third or fourth year class. Very hard marker and almost goes too into depth during his lectures, kind of expecting us to know what he is talking about.
I'm sure he's knowledgeable in his field and he seems to be a nice guy but he's just so boring and expects far too much from students. I would only take a class with him if you are very passionate about the subject matter and have a lot of time to dedicate to the class.
Maybe he's better for in-person classes, but his online class is insufferably boring and he does no real teaching at all.
I think he's a nice guy overall, but this was an INTRO class and I did better in the other co-req courses. had no concrete criteria but still marked really hard... expects students to know so much (it's an intro class too)
Dr. Abiew is kinda nice but will make you feel stupid if you ask him a question. he doesn't properly explain exam questions which resulted in a lot of people failing one of the midterms. this is an INTRO class, yet it felt like a 3rd-4th year class. he goes SO in-depth in his lectures and expects you to know what he's talking about. stay away.
Guy does not explain stuff properly. PLAIN BORING
He is probably better in person than online. He marks quite harshly for an intro class, and I think most people did poorly in the class. He also didn't go over exam questions very well until after he graded them. One extra thing, I felt his essay grading was fairer than the tests, I would consider taking his class in person, but never online again.
Overall, Professor Abiew is a good professor, but online classes aren't his style. My first problem was we didn't do anything worth marks until late February, its hard to understand a professor when you have no graded work until that late in a semester. Additionally, lectures were not engaging, felt as though he was reading the textbook to us.
was so scared to take his class here is how you can pass! ive only had him online so idk what works irl. So write down everything he says in lecture like literally everything!! and then for exams write that as the answer. Even if you think it doesnt fit as a good response bring it in the convo! i never read txt but i did pay attention in class.
If you read the textbook, take active notes while reading, and pay close attention in class you can do just fine. To be honest, when I had his class I could have had a higher mark but I slacked off a bit and skipped some assigned reading. You can't expect an amazing grade in his classes if you don't put in amazing effort. Overall, I like this prof.
very very hard professor
tough professor
Upper years students might learn a lot from he, you can tell his brain is full of knowledge, but terrible if this is your first semester, or entry to political science training, he would expect you'd know most of the terms and will not go into the specifics, no PPT slides were used, make sure to take notes of whatever he writes and says.
He isvery tough prof. never had this kind of prof. Tests are very heavy and he is very bad grader
Tough professor who grades harshly. Lectures can be dry, but staying engaged and using resources like the textbook and unstuckstudy can help. Consider taking this in-person if possible.
yells at students who participate in class, rude, does not show the friendliness or openness to questions, if you ask a simple question via email you would be given a paragraph of why you shouldn't email him but instead look at the class outline (which doesn't have the answer and is very messy) or to book an appointment during his office hours.
Dr. Abiew is a very, very passionate professor and is really enthusiastic during lectures. Always makes sure students understand what's going on. There was one essay, three midterms, no final. Tests were easy because he gives you the answers and test questions during his lectures. Full of knowledge. Overall super interesting class, I loved him!
If you ever approach him about an assignment, he provides detailed and helpful feedback to guide you. In his class, the structure is well-organized with two exams, one presentation, one research paper, and three reports, all of which help us thoroughly understand the material."
Francis is a pretty funny guy. He's so wholesome and super passionate about poli. Truly wants his students to do well. You have to show up to class as he gives out answers to the tests in his lectures. This class was an easy A, just review the notes you take during class. You'd have to really put effort into not trying to do bad.
Super easy class if you pay attention in lectures and take notes. Anyone who found him/this class hard either skipped lectures or was asleep in class. Francis is very good at explaining concepts and gives you test answers in class. I'd definitely recommend him to any students interested in poli. Will probably be taking another class with him.
Hard to Understand what he says
Dr. Abiew is a wonderful professor who focusses on content explanation. He has clear grading guidelines and is very upfront with expectations and requirements of students in this course right at the beginning of the semester. As long as students take notes and attend classes, students will be perfectly fine!
Possibly the crappiest prof out there. He doesn't know how to teach. He opens a textbook and pretty much reads from it, doesn't really explain anything properly. Also, if you ask questions, you're likely to get yelled at. Best advice, just don't take this guy and save your money. I regret everything.
The class is easy, as long as you read the textbook to get an understanding and take notes in class. Dr. Abiew is very clear on what he wants you to know, so take notes on those specific things. Tests are very easy/basic. As for the doc himself, he's a funny guy who teaches with a lot of passion and his heart on his sleeve. Love his lectures!
This Prof is terrible. do not take him unless absolutely necessary. he yells at students, gives unclear and contradictory instruction, and is completely unhelpful. if you must take him, only take one of his classes per semester, any more and you will regret it.
the best prof kpu poli sci department has. Dr. Abiew has so much knowledge to share and truly cares about teaching students. Do not believe all these bad reviews, as long as you show up and take notes you'll do great. Yes attendance does matter and although there is a textbook required, a majority of everything on tests is from lectures.
I had the easiest semester because of this prof. Very clear guidelines and wants his students to do well. Don't take his courses if you expect to be spoon-fed its as simple as that. Cannot wait to take more courses with Dr. Abiew.
Feel bad for the guy because of all the goofs he has to deal with in class. I did well on the tests, which resembled a lot of what he highlighted during lectures. Comes to class with energy/passion ready to teach. Enjoyed this class.
As a poli sci major I learned so much and was an enjoyable class. The clear guidelines were appreciated. There was 1 research essay and 3 tests which all stem from the lectures, by far a very knowledgeable and kind professor.
I highly recommend this class if you're a political science major. Super structured course, nothing unexpected gets thrown at you. Very clear expectations so its easy for time management. There are 3 tests, a research essay, and 3 discussion groups. It literally can't get any easier than that. Truly enjoyed learning from the prof.
I would not judge him based on the negative reviews, this class was fairly easy and straightforward. If you want to do well in this class follow the course outline precisely and take notes in his lecture. He will tell you over and over that what he says in lectures will be on the exams so if you're not taking notes you're obviously gonna do bad.
Shocked at some of these reviews because this is university and not high school. The profs class is fairly simple and structured. Don't skip class, participation and taking notes is all that is required to get a good grade. Overall, I'm looking forward to taking Dr. Abiew's classes in the future.
If you want to fail, then id gladly tell you to take this class. this guy does not care about you or your grades; he expects you to know everything on the topic already and will get upset if anything or topic that wasn't discussed in the class was brought out. 0/5 would NEVER take this guys classes again.
Dr. Francis is such a great professor honestly, and he cares for his student's success. I'm glad I didn't listen to the awful reviews here. He explains his lessons thoroughly and uses analogies as examples for students to better understand the topics. There's also lots of activities that you can boost your grades up.
Honestly a pretty solid professor. Had I studied harder for exam 1 I could've done much better. My only complaint is the classes were boring at times. Most of them are just him lecturing. He knows his stuff though and clearly enjoys the content. He also has the most aura of profs I've had at KPU, do with that what you will.
