Difficult to understand, but he cares
He's the best
He thinks his teaching style rocks, but I didn't learn a thing!

Francis is really really great. It was a very interesting, and informative class.
Nice guy, but didn't understand a bloody word he said all term
i found it offensive and inappropreite that in a white-first nations class he basically blamed the white students (or there ancestors but it seemed like a dirct attack) for the current state of first nations people. i dropped his class half way through.
This guy definitely knows what he's talking about. He is very interactive and makes do overheads as study material for the tests. Very humble and nice guy. This is the class that made me decide to major in Sociology! He wears ****ed out shirts too!Takehim
I really enjoyed his class.
I guess if you can understand him you'll like his class, but I could hear him half the time because he would talk so fast and quite. He's really into group participation and doesn't allow for people to be marked individualy
Francis is a great teacher full of passion and inspiration. For the individual who felt attacked and droppped the class, time to open your eyes to the reality of what this country is really all about!!
Man, I can get over the anguage barrier here but his focus on group work. What century is he living in. He is also very subjective on certain material and easily confused when you point out his clear contridictions. Francis if you read this.. give up the group work and let the student earn the grade
Hands down the smartest man I've ever met in my life. What can I say? I wish he taught all of my classes. He actually teaches you how to use your brain...and it's helped me in every class since! I just can't say enough...
AWESOME PROF!! He teaches you to think in a new way and re-examine many social myths that we are surrounded by every day. His accent takes some getting used to, but he is DEFINITELY worth it. Going into this class, you must be willing to not take personal offense to comments on Canadian society.
I found that he was difficult to understand.Half the time I didn't know what he was saying.

dont take this class if you like being able to understand your teacher, oh and he doesnt like you taking notes. he honestly believes all the crazy abstract things he talks about. take class if you feel like the world hates you
This teacher was impatient and stubborn with questions. He marked groups on the performance of one person, which meant you relied on the intelligence of a stranger. He didn't teach objectively, instead presented his biased opinions as fact. Near exam time, he routinely ended class early, leaving sections out and complainining the class was behind.
Great prof, loved his classes. If you believe that we live in a fair and just society, be prepared to be challenged! For the rest of us who already know what's going on, you'll come away far more knowledgeable about our society. Approachable, friendly, uber-smart, what a guy!
Very nice and very interesting views on society. The texted book suck a$$, though and the class could get totally sidetracked with arguements. As interesting as they were I wish he'd bring it around to the topic more frequently. Also, I didn't understand his "Know the subject, don't study" view.
A great guy that will make you think. I never opened my book once and it is $$$ so just take lots of notes(fast) instead. Go to class, with an open mind, and do not take things so personally and you will do fine. You should also sit up front to better hear and understand him. All in all, if your not a twelve year old you will do fine.
Awful teacher!! He doesn't give examples, his midterm didn't make GRAMATICAL SENSE! He'd talk about a girl in the questions but the answers all had to do with guys WTF! Everyone scored so low he made it out of 20 instead of 25, and guess what? He has done this not just for my class but ALL SOC. Isn't this telling him something? :(

He is unbelievably unclear about what he wants from students. His multiple choice questions make so little sense. He tends to make fun of people, so I've learned not to speak up.
Making my way through the General Arts department and I have found my favourite subject by far. I really dig this because he makes it interesting for me with his tone in his speech. It makes me want to listen. Not too fast, nor slow. Just perfect (if you don't enjoy reading the textbooks) - Powerpoint presentations all the way Doc!
He sometimes picks on people in class. He also doesn't make sense all of the time. English is fairly obviously not his first language.
Not the greatest teacher. He's all about doing minimal work. He just skips through most of his powerpoint slides and goes through what he thinks is the 'main' point.
This guy obvisously knows what he is talking about, but really doesn't know how to break it down so we know whats going on. NIce guy, but DON'T TAKE SOC 100 with him. I was confused from day one of the class, and he told most of us that we were going to fail the course. Encouraging?? i think NOT!! try to get it with someone who can teach better!

Francis really tries to engage the class and promote critical thinking. Although his accent is a bit difficult to understand, you get used to it. He is very accomodating, but will not lower his standards - which is great.
He made a lot of odd comments throughout the semester that were hard to follow. During a lecture he was talking about the human genotype. I found a major flaw in what he was saying and when i asked he admitted he didn't know and through my comments out the window like I had never said anything. This happened a lot in the term. Bad prof to sum it up
I couldn't get over the fact that I would spend two or three hours writing a critical review. Then bring it to class only for my group to pick a different review and I get a bad grade because of this OTHER persons review. You don't get any feedback in this class. He doesn't use email or post the powerpoints which in this day and age is ridiculous.
Not helpfull at all you will ask a Question and he will not answer it! You will spend your time reading more of the text book to understand what the HELL he is talking about no e-mail or power point avaliable! does not like when you take notes in class Tells you to put your pen down all the time! not a good teacher!
Very thick accent makes him hard to understand. Flips through powerpoints too quickly to write down. Super boring teaching style and no projects to keep you on the ball. I'm completely lost for my final for these reasons.
He is very interested in the material and tries to get the class to share his interest. However the subject matter is pretty boring and repetitive. He is difficult to understand for the most part (i feel bad when he makes a joke and no one laughs:( ) and there are no projects to help you follow along with the theories.
If you lack the, as Mills put it, quality of mind to understand sociology, this prof is not for you. However, if you have a desire to learn not just abstract concepts but tangible ways to apply those concepts, consider yourself lucky to have a prof like this one available to you.
He was my favorite teacher at Camosun! He was so interested in what he was teaching and it made me so interested. This class totally changed the way I look at society. Thanks Mr. Francis!
Nice enough guy, very heavy accent makes him hard to understand which often leaves you scratching your head while he moves on to the next subject. Provides tons of options for testing/final examination, including group tests. Very knowledgeable, but probably wouldn't take him again
He is reluctant to explain his assignments. Some classes are really interesting but his slides are tiny and there is so much note taking that often it is hard to listen to what he is saying (which is also difficult because he has a really cool, but strong accent that takes some getting used to).
Francis is an incredible professor. Once you realize that he's pretty much playing devil's advocate and challening you to break down EVERYTHING you though you ever knew about the world, you'll love the course. He wants you to question everything, to be passionate, and to truly learn.
umm...interesting teaching method...he's extremely nice and approachable, but hard to understand. You really need to show up to every class to get a decent grade.
Really nice guy but I find his class confusing. I think that he should mark the student instead of marking group projects. I feel bad saying it cuz he's just such a nice guy :(
Honestly, Francis is a great guy. But all I learned from this class were definitions and not actual understanding of sociology. Super easy!!!!! but if you plan on majoring in this don't take the class with him. I never showed up to class and still managed to get over 90% in his class.
You can't understand one word he's saying. I didn't learn one thing in this class.
Super BORING Class, I fell asleep a lot. He is also very very confusing, as his accent makes it hard to understand.. HOWEVER. LEARN THE DEFINITIONS. YOU WILL ACE ALL TESTS. I spent 3 months knowing NOTHING and I learned the definitions and got a 91% on a test.
Great teacher. Opened my mind up to analyze society from different points of view. Your grade will reflect your willingness to learn the material, and participation in class helped me understand a lot more. Speak up!
He's a really smart guy and very nice but this was the most boring class I've ever taken. He also doesn't like hearing anyone else's opinions (he begs for them and then just says no you're wrong). The concepts are really easy though, unfortunately the wording he uses on his tests is confusing and the final is worth 62%.
Francis is one of the most passionate persons I've ever encountered. Don't take him if you like regular homework assignments, frequent testing, etc... He kind of goes against the grain with this. Taking his class next term because I enjoyed it so much. You absolutely need the textbook - and make sure the most recent one as it is fully used.
So far the best sociology I have ever taken in my entire life. The best teacher I have met willing to show you Africa's reality in black and no white, inspirational, clear, will develop and shape your thinking, will strongly recommend taking his class a PhD in sociology and its class is truly worth it. Be prepare for group projects and readings
Best class I have ever been in! Francis is so passionate about sociology and really provides a hands on kind of approach. He doesn't believe in midterms, but wants you to understand the material! Helped me view Africa in a whole new dimension. Recommend taking this class!
Francis is passionate about what he teaches; but he goes too in depth about things the class has already picked up so it ends up wasting a lot of time. He can be pretty funny at times, he can make the whole class laugh. But he says on the first day, attendance is not necessary, and he means it. First class of the week, important; Second, optional.
Francis is easily one of the kindest and funniest people I've ever met. You'll never meet a professor more passionate or knowledgeable about his subject; he has a PhD in sociology after all! Would definitely take his class again.
Francis is an amazing guy. He believes in group-based, so if you are more independent I don't suggest you taking his class. Be prepared to read a lot, and come into class with crazy ideas to show your understanding. He wants you to succeed, but in order to do that you also have to apply yourself. He seems intimidating at first but he is very sweet.
Francis is a passionate sociologist who wants to hear your ideas. Don't approach this class thinking you just need to memorize the info (but you do need to do that too). Keep an open mind, do the optional service learning project, do the reading and you'll be ok. A great grade is possible but it will not come easily.
Absolutely terrible. Went to every class and taught myself more by reading the text book. Not clear at all for assignments. Has atleast 70 slides a "lecture" and gets through maybe 5 and you have to try and teach yourself the rest. slides aren't even clear of what you need to know. I had to google most of the concepts to study for exams
Participation matters in this class, it's a time consuming class but show up. Put in the time you'll get an A. Do the service learning project!!!. If you don't you need to do with small projects he assigns that will be due within days, if you're doing the service project he gives you bonus marks for doing the assignment.
If you want to do projects outside of the classroom to pass; this is your teacher. Otherwise, the lectures are confusing, and the question structure is difficult. I am fluent in English, it's my first language; I have never struggled so hard to understand a question before. His class average is 65% for a good term. About 6 study hours/lecture.
Francis is a certified beauty, you can tell he loves his students and his family.
Took this class as an online elective. Francis is the most unclear prof I have had. He doesn't seem to know how to use D2L properly at all. Dropboxes are only open the day the assignment is due. He also asks that you submit in groups of 6 or more, which is especially difficult with an online class. Discussion boards never open to communicate. Avoid
honestly this class is a joke... francis is a really nice guy dont get me wrong, but i didnt learn anything in this class... really easy though. its super hard to understand him because of his accent (not his fault). nobody would ever show up to class and most of the class got A's
Pros: Knows his stuff, can do a service learning project and then get bonus marks outside of it (Do that!) Cons: Everything else. Expectations are unclear, unreachable outside of class, posts assignments that are due 24 hours in advance, powerpoints are confusing, multiple choice questions are like layered riddles. Nice guy but confusing prof.
If you're a international student who is not good at English language like native speaker, you have to work with Canadian classmates in class. Francis's class is not much friendly to second language student. However, Francis is a really nice professor. Youll have a lot confusing in this class, then you have to ask him as soon as possible.
If you are international student who are not good at speak English as native speaker, I could recommend to avoid this class. You could not understand almost everything what he said.
Best teacher for international students
Francis is a great, funny, interesting person but I cant really endorse his Soc100 class. If you can get over his not so great public speaking and confusing powerpoints the lectures are full of good info and can be very inspiring. The assignments are really confusing though and he seems to have trouble clarifying what youre supposed to do.
If you like actually learning and having your questions answered, do not take this or any other of Franic's classes. You need not attend class as his 70 slide long powerpoints have all the info you need. If you were expecting answers to your questions guess again, he talks in circles, does not answer the question, and frankly comes off as rude. BAD
Francis is nice and obviously cares a lot about Sociology, but the way he teaches is not good. His power points are minimum 60 slides long and have 3 different fonts, 5 different colors and homemade mind maps that are impossible to decipher. Quiz & midterm questions are a paragraph long and also hard to decipher. Overall, disorganized. :(
I did this class online and it was terrible. I had to withdraw because I didn't understand the concepts he wanted us to get. I emailed him a few days before I withdrew, expecting a response, and he still hasn't emailed me back, this was a month ago. Lectures are confusing, he doesn't specify what he wants us to know. Overall, super disorganized.
Such a nice man, but so impossible to follow his lectures. Partway through the semester he stopped actually giving the lectures and expected you to read his hard to follow slides and learn by yourself. The way he does group projects is the worst I've ever experienced. Too hard to describe in this short amount of characters.
Really great person who is very passionate about soci. Classes are just him asking if you have any questions from the lecture you were supposed to read at home. He tends to go off-topic and no one can follow him. Content is not suitable for an intro class. Group projects can be gruelling. Great guy but I do not recommend this course.
The midterm is worth 30% with 30 questions that are all a paragraph long. It's impossible to decipher what he's asking and you run out of time trying to read the first part of the question which is irrelevant! Group assignments are all the same, instructions are unclear and he marks hard.
Seems like a genuine guy, but my main issue was that he talked unbelievably slow in his lectures. Even speeding the audio up didn't help the long pauses. Also the lectures slide each week were crazy long and disorganized, averaging 80 pages. All that being said, the course was super easy and you can get a 10/10 on assignments with minimal effort.
Francis is one of the best professors I have ever had
I highly suggest not taking his class. He's nice and not a super hard marker, but his teaching style (especially his chaotic powerpoints that are 60-90 slides long) will make you want to pull your hair out.
The lecture presentations are chaotic, no only because a are long, there are messy. The questions test are hard to identify because are long until the point you are not sure what's the question and during class he speaks very low. No recommended this class.
Chaotic. He seems like a nice guy but does not know how to teach. Very disorganized and his lectures and lecture notes make NO sense. A lot of his material is outdated or irrelevant (and also wrong re: Residential Schools), and he requires you to buy a textbook that he wrote. I tried to get help during office hours but didn't gain anything. AVOID.
The content is hard to understand through his repetitive lecture slides that were full of spelling errors so I relied on the textbook. For the assignments you have about 10 criteria to follow and you get graded for other people's work which made me mad. I didn't learn much, be sure to upload into the correct folder and read directions many times.
Honestly, he seems like a nice guy but NOBODY would show up for his class so it made the times you did attend very awkward. He would ask a question to a room of four people and there would only be crickets...seriously. One day I attended class to find only him and one other student there discussing the material. really awkward
The grading criteria are very fair. There are several group assignments in this course that must be done within a week, but they are not too difficult. The lecturer is considerate of the students and did not place undue stress on me in this course. However, the PPT was extremely perplexing. I recommend you read the reading first.
The lectures were very long and I found he would go on extremely long tangents that were unrelated to the class. He speaks very quietly so the lectures are difficult to understand and pay attention to.
A very nice person indeed, I would love to have him as my friend irl, but definitely not as my professor. If you're hoping to really learn something in his class, you might be disappointed. But if you're just after credits and a good GPA, then his online course is your top choice.
Francis is kind-hearted and serious about Sociology. However, this class isn't a good introduction. His teaching style is ineffective. Lectures are very long (60-100 slides), disorganized, and have many grammatical errors. He will ramble and go off topic in class, only getting through 2-5 slides. He also tends to repeat information. Sad :(
He is a nice guy, but I wouldn't recommend him as a prof. Very long & disorganized lectures. Many group projects which you get graded on other people's work... really discouraging, as I would put time & effort into writing my assignments. Test questions can be long & hard to understand. Many others also had difficulties. I didn't learn much at all.
So many issues with this course; overall, not a good introduction to sociology. Instructions are all over the place and unclear, and minimal assignment structure is given. Lack of direction in group projects - students required to choose someone else's assignment to submit. Lecture slides hard to understand and extremely lengthy. Very demoralising.
his lectures and slides are very disorganized, all the group work is only worth like 5% but you have like 100 of them, he often will go off-topic without informing anyone so its confusing in that aspect. he doesn't know how to teach and had a terribly thick accent. he's done great things but teaching is not his specialty.
Don't take this class if you don't enjoy working as a group. Awful organization, awful explanations, awful assignments. That course is a nightmare. PD: Make sure your team group is actually collaborative
Grading is both based on individual and group work. Participation in this is the difference between passing and failing
My god this guy is terrible. Nice guy but damn. Entire class is dedicated to the first few slides of his 90 powerpoint presentation per class. He spends the entire class talking about the general overall key but doesnt dive into one of the required concepts for exam. The tests are also insane. So t take if you want to live.
