great personality, attend class, take notes, two short papers, get an A or B. Class is not easy, but rewarding
Great teacher fair just take note show up. 2 papars as well. 3 test plus finale
The only thing worse then Dr. Coan the professor is Dr. Coan the person. He is a bitter, little man with no social skills and a personality like a corpse. After 4 years at a university, never had a worse professor. So glad I no longer am in his class.
Coan is very confronting in terms of his personality, class can become uncomfortable at times, when he expects class to participate and no one does. Tests are also not class/ lecture based. In terms of a lot of BS multiple choide like exact dates.
he has to be the worst teacher i have ever had in my life, he has no sense of humor and gets angry when no one is answersing any of the question because we are all asleep of BOREDOM!!!!!! HELP ME I WANT OUT!!!!!!SAVE YOUR SELVES!!!!!

Just make sure you kiss his ass...
I really liked Prof. Coan. He expects his students to actually work in his class and if you do, you'll receive a good grade. If not, expect him to think you're a slacker. Do the reading, take notes, particpate, and you'll like the class. He's a good guy.
Professor Coan is tough, but good. He's very well informed & willing to help you if you need it, but he is very strick on deadlines. His tests are hard, but if you study the notes & attend classes, you'll pass, but you must know the material.
professor coan's class , while challenging , was incredably informative and enjoyable.he is very funny and as long as you take good notes , participate and study for the tests , you will do well.participation is the key to a good grade in coan's class tho
If you have a problem with this teacher, you may be the problem. Perhaps you are lazy and not bright. There is no reason not get an A in this class. I didn't even have to take the final to get an A. Just show up, actually care about your schooling, and participate in class and it will be a breeze
I had the pleasure of sitting in on Dr. Coan's class. He actually made history interesting! As a person, awesome! He convinced me to go to college in the first place! If you work hard, you more than get what you paid for! If not, well - you got what you deserved! Thanks Francois!
very hard!! his notes are impossible to understand. if i could give you any advice STAY AWAy!!!!!!!!!!!!
I found Dr. Coan to be somewhat hard, but very direct and clear regarding what he expects from you. I suggest you take better notes than I did. He's tough... but fun.
he was unfair to our whole class

REAAAAALLLLLLY easy class........only one month..........he had a nice little impact besides the course
Impossible to pass this class, unless you've been reading you're history book like the bible since you were born. Grades papers very hard.
his notes are impossible to understand all over the board no structure
Unrealistic expectations for online classes. Tests on trivia instead of major subjects. Unbending, too critical and unfair. If you are not right the first time, withdraw, you don't stand a chance. Maybe different in the classroom, ridiculous online. RIGID, flys through history at break-neck speed. Expects you to have insight and passion he doe
Nice guy if you do your work, and pay attention in class
Those who say that we are just not bright enough, must have some serious issues. I know 3 student that are history majors and they have failed his class. I passed, but it took 3-4 hours a day just to read the book and memorize all of it. His tests are beyond of what anyone could expect. I flet like I was getting my PhD.in his class. He is rude.
UGHH!
Dr. Coan is the best instructor at Tunxis. He loves his job and is a very involved prof. I think the world of Dr. Coan. Tunxis is very lucky to have him! Take his class...don't expect to fly through it, you are in college and it is time to buck up and work hard. But you WILL learn something!
If you are not part of the political party be prepared to fail this class. You must have prior knowledge of the subject matter in order to pass this class. He expects u to be on his level. Very strict grading. Good Luck.
Some of these ratings sound like the Prof. wrote them himself!
if you consider a class average of a 70 to be one of the best, then you can take his class, but that means you have an 70-80 in the class. super hard tester. if u dont read the book, drop the class. book was CRAZY thick and extremely boring. if youre into history, it's all for you. Def not a elective or first history type of class. you'll want to d
Extremely intelligent, devotes a lot of time to his tests and to his lectures. Has a particularly unique sense of humor, which makes class all the more enjoyable. Just make sure that you have content when taking a test, because he can spot BS a mile away
Prof. Coan is a wonderful educator and I learned agreat deal from his class. For everyone who complains about him, perhaps if you actually do the work, you would be successful in his class. Not an easy "A" by any means, but fair in grading...just do the work assigned!
SUCKS!! Do not take him.
Basically, read the book or fail the class. He doesn't give notes really. He just talks a lot and expects you to write down everything he says. He's nice, but gets frustrated when people don't participate. I wouldn't take another class with him, though. His tests are insane and he's a tough grader.
Professor Coan is AWFUL. wayy to smart to be at tunxis. he should be teaching @ harvard. no one in the class can understand what he is saying. he is disrespectful to the students and basically calls us stupid when we don't understand it. his notes on the board are AWFUL. soo all over the place and not organized at all. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
mr. coan is a TERRIBLE teacher. he talks down to his students and treats students who dont understand his less than effective notes like trash.he is smart although he does not know how pass the knowledge on to his students.
I went from Quinnipiac to TCC.. I thought that the history would be easier, it wasnt. He has the worst attitude and if he truly cared about how his students were doing, he wouldn't grade the way he does. Makes mean comments about people that are offensive. In his job for the wrong reasons. I'm so disappointed in Tunxis because of him.
The tests are really bad. He will do anything to give you a bad grade.
Worst teacher I've ever had. He doesn't help you at all. The whole grade is basically tests. He is such an inconsistant grader, one essay he'll give a D and one he'll give an A. Impossible to do well in this class.
Dr. Coan is an excellent teacher. The thing is- he wants to see students take an interest in learning. So, if you sit in his class and zone out and try to just grab an easy A you are gonna hate life all semester. He will really go out of his way for you if you show that you care about learning something and not just getting the easy A.
One of the most awesome teachers I've ever had... very nice, very helpful and somewhat humourous, LoL. He can tell who is ducking out and who is giving it their best effort. So if you're a hard worker, you MUST take him. If you're lazy and like to slide through courses, you're probably not ready for Coan.
Terrible experience with this teacher. I have to admit I have no interest in history and had to take it only to fulfill history requirements. His tests are tough and I think you really have to be into history to do well in his class. The questions are hard and our class average on first test was 50...I hated the whole experience.Would not recommend
Good guy. Extremely tough grader on papers and written essays. Shows true passion for teaching History.
Don't take this class! All the reviews are mixed opinions so I decided to see for myself. I agree that he is an overall nice guy and wants you take an interest in his class, but as for an intro to geography, it was more like a history class. exams are difficult he is a hard grader.
Professor Coan is not exactly a hard teacher, he just knows what he's looking for. He's very informative and is extremely interested in teaching this class. He's knowledgeable and helpful whenever you need it. As long as you attend class and write notes, you should do fine. Anyone that says his class is extremely hard wasn't paying enough attention
You learn a lot from him. Great teacher, very nice. If you pay attention, you'll do great. If you skip a lot of classes, don't take this because you can't just slide through. Definitely recommend him if you're looking to learn a lot!
Very nice and knowledgeable. Go to every class. He expects a good amount from his students so if you're a slacker forget it. The type of class you learn a great amount in if you just put in effort. He really respects and can pull out individuals in the class that care. Loved him! Recommended!
If you go to class and study, you'll do fine. He's very nice and very passionate about the subject matter. Pretty funny too. I'd def recommend him!
Answers questions before the beginning of every class. Has fun stories to tell. Very organized.
Passionate, knowledgable, funny. Take the class it's a great experience and you'll learn a lot.
Knows his materials like the back of his hand. Very passionate. If you go to class and pay attention you'll do very well. Loved him!
He is excellent. You need to go to class and pay attention, but if you do this and read the book a little you'll do a good job. He pays a lot of attention to if you skip and likes people a lot more if you attend regularly. I would definitely recommend him.
Show up, take notes, and you'll do fine. If you go to class he will have no problem helping you with any questions at all. I hate Geography and I enjoyed his class. I would recommend him to anyone.
He does not teach much in the class and the test are on everything in the book. Class average was in the low 70's. Don't even think about walking in late or leaving early.
Awful class, so boring id rather watch grass grow then take this class... grades based only on test grades. class average for test was low! SO BORING!
Professor Coan possesses a near encyclopedic knowledge of his subject matter. The problem is, he expects you to as well. As a history major I was able to keep up for the most part, but even I felt overwhelmed at times with the unnecessary difficulty level of a 102 level class. Class average on tests was consistently below 70. Very harsh grader.
Dr. Coan is very smart, but boy is his class difficult! Class average is a 64! A 64! He is a terribly critical and hard grader, his comments can beat you down. He will often refuse to teach a topic if not enough students participate, and assumes nobody does any work. SO GLAD I WITHDREW! BEWARE!
The tests are ridiculous. The review sheets do NOT match the test materials no matter how many times you may study from them. My class average wasin the 60's for every exam. For a 101 class, it was more like a high-level class!!
Professor Coan is very intelligent and definitely knows what hes talking about but he is extremely boring. His tests do not correlate with the study sheets AT ALL. His tests are very difficult. I wish I dropped his class, it brought down my GPA a lot. Almost half the class dropped
DO NOT TAKE!!!! I had a 3.8 gpa before I took this class. I wish I dropped the class. Extemely difficult grader. The test do not match the study guide. The questions are worded completely different than text or notes given. Horrible teacher. Extremely boring
DO NOT TAKE! verbally beats people down for not participating and assuming they didn't read the material because of this. Test reviews do not match the tests themselves accurately and saw about 60% of the original students drop out of the class. The material got better as the class went on but Coan's attitude was out of line and inappropriate.
His quizzes are so difficult, and his lectures are so poor. But he is an intelligent teacher. Like this class
Dr. Coan is good to you if you show effort. You need to show up to class and you need to read the book. If you don't participate in class, he will likely just skip over the topic and assume nobody cares or wants to learn. HINTS: Come in with questions to ask during class While reading at home, write something down and bring it to class
Tests are very hard and he's a tough grader. Don't use your cellphone in his classes because he'll ask you to leave the class at the moment. Intro to geography is supposed to be an easy class but not with him as a professor.
Professor Coan expected us to come to class with questions and be able to answer his questions on the reading even when the reading was difficult to follow or lengthy. When we didn't know what to ask or answer he would be sarcastic and grade harshly on the next test. He graded very tough and our grade was made up of only four tests for the semester
Professor Coan is a tough grader and is not specific about grading criteria. He goes on random tangents throughout class which is really distracting. Nearly everyone in the class was failing at one point and instead of offering extra guidance, he made us all feel stupid. Get ready to use your textbook.
Definitely, would never recommend this class for anyone. If it had not been required to get my degree, I would have dropped the class. This professor is extremely well educated but he is SUPER boring. Don't take the class if you dislike reading. He also changed the way participation was graded throughout the semester. No electronics allowed!!
Rude. You can study your butt off and you still won't pass with a good grade. Tough grader. He is very smart and expects everyone else to be up to his level. Makes you feel stupid and less than. Hard tricky tests, lots of reading . His study guides do not help. His class has been one of the worse experiences at Tunxis.
Come to class, do the reading, participate in discussions and in the group work, and you should be fine. Tests and quizzes aren't that hard if you did the reading, so make sure to do it. He really does know what he's talking about and I learned a lot, but he's definitely not for the faint of heart. Beware: never take out your phone.
I liked Dr. Coan. He knows his stuff and i thought he was very fair. He likes participation and reading is required. After all folks, this is college and that should be a given. Read the material, show up and participate. I love history and he made it interesting!
At first I thought this class was going to be an ok introduction geography. But its not, Be on top of the reading, because if not he will continue on and pass over parts in class. The test don't ever make sense unless you come to class and take very meticulous notes. Beware he does tend to get a bit upset if no one talks or participates in class.
good and interestingly weird teacher.. hard grader and you must stay up to date with the readings.
This professor did not give extra credit because according to him "If you can't even do your job then what makes you think that you can do extra?". Be ready to read a chapter at home for every class, and be prepared for hard/impossible tests.
A very interesting class with a smart and caring professor. He has high standards, but thats a good thing in college. Do the reading, come to class and youll learn a lot.
one of the best professors at tunxis! caring and always wants to see his students succeed.
Mr. Coan is a smart person, but he sees no point in teaching if no one participates and he verbally beats up the class if no one says anything. One day, class was let out an hour early because no one bothered to say a word. You must read and take good notes from the book and demonstrate your knowledge in class to get him to respect you.
The worst professor I've ever seen. Extremely tough grader. Went from having straight As on every paper I've done to a D- on the first one I did for this class. Gets extremely mad at the class for not being able to answer questions on the material he hasn't taught yet, and ends up skipping several slides. Doesn't care about success of students.
Exams are very hard, no review, skips the slides, does not explain the chapter well. Asks a lot of questions on the topic that we haven't covered, if the students are quiet he gets mad. I understand this is college but I have never struggled with a class so much!
Not only the worst professor I've ever had, but one of the most awful human beings I've ever come in contact with. Made extremely offensive comments about depression and how anyone struggling from it is just lazy. Impossible tests with questions that aren't mentioned in the countless amounts of reading you have every night. Avoid at all costs!!!!!!
I am an A student, he assigns readings but goes off topic -- doesnt touch on things youve read. Has a weird obsession with Teddy Roosevelt, makes you write papers about information you dont have like: If you were writing a paper on Hiroshima what primary sources would you use ( we werent even studying hiroshima). Bad instructor, rude, had to drop.
I would not recommend. Unfortunately theres many things I did not like about this class. Theres no homework. Youre graded on your tests and papers only. The lectures have no information, literally titles and dates. There is no real study guide. When it came to the test the questions were impossible to answer. Just do yourself a favor and dont.
His classes contain a lot of reading and lectures. He really makes you work for your grade. He expects you to do the readings and his grading/lectures reflect that; you only get graded on a few tests and are expected to participate. HOWEVER, he has so much passion for his career and it shows in his teaching. Great teacher but very hard.
He gives us "exams" every week and he throws 3 chapters at us which are very long! Posted 2 hr long videos for a 1hr and 45 minute class sometimes 3. Study guide is garbage. Study guide does not specify which chapter it will be on the most. Questions are hard to comprehend. Needs to simplify questions.
I was so confused throughout the semester. Does not teach as well as I thought. It was an online class no meeting time and he posted prerecorded videos that were sometimes 3 hrs. You can just read the textbook, but the quizzes and test had nothing to do with the textbook. Very hard to understand his questions during exams. Passive aggressive emails
I had a really hard time with him. He doesn't teach well and is very confusing. I had an all online class and he would post prerecorded videos up to 2-3 hrs long. The textbook was a waste we didn't even use it and he spoke so much differently than the textbook I was super confused. Passive aggressive when the whole class was struggling. Not helpful
You're only graded on a few tests/writing assignments all timed roughly around 1 hour and a half. The tests were roughly around 60 multiple choice questions -most students failed. The study guide was a waste. Most students were struggling and no effort was done on his part to change that. Chapters are long and so are the 2-year-old lectures.
Graded by very little and has extremely tough grading policies. Also, spent most of his class time complaining about administration and his bosses. Textbook was completely irrelevant, steer clear of this class or any others taught by him.
Absolute worst professor, I've ever had. His exams have nothing to do with the content of the chapters you study for. Feel like I am set up to fail.
Dont take his classes . The class mean for the entire class is 60.
He's a strange, but not bad professor. He is a little intense and can be intimidating because of that. He has one weird quirk: he will stop class and rage at anyone who comes in late and passes by him (hilarious). He will also toe the line and mention God a lot. However, his lectures are memorable, and he is passionate. Reading is a must.
