do not take this guy for biology! He does not understand what he is teaching. The only good thing about that class is he hands out a review for the test with all the answers on it and then pulls the test from that review.
I hated this class. He is an awful teacher. Can't explain a thing. Lecture very unclear. I would rather shot myself my in foot then sit in one of his classes. Teaches everything upper level.
WOW, this guy is crazy, can't teach worth a flip. I was really interested in biology befor taking his class, now I can't stand it.
He knows what he is talking about, but mumbles alot. He also talks about the woods too. If you do the study questions you will make A's on all the tests. Questions come straight from study guides word for word.
I wouldnt suggest taking him for Bio. His lectures suck because he goes way off topic all the time. I didnt study much except the first day before the tests bc he curves the hell out of them. I ended up making a B but didnt get anything out of the class. You can make a good grade bc he curves it.
This prof. sucks at teaching. He is unorganized in his teaching methods. Didnt understand a thing. NO extra and doesnt even answer your questions, he thinks you are trying to cheat? He is crazy. Avoid this man by any means.
I didn't go to class more than half the time. His lectures are hard to follow and he treats this class like you are majoring in the damn subject. Majority of the test comes straight from the review so its pretty easy to pass. I don't recommend taking him what so ever....its horrible!
Awful! Tests are very hard. Doesn't teach well at all. He doesnt give study guide answers anymore.
does not follow his own syllabus or grading policies, does notteachthe material instead he talks aboutthe various medical test he has gone through and which ones we must take if we want to make it past 35.
I had him two years ago....but it was a great class!! He explained everything we needed to know. If you just take notes, pay attention, not be lazy and study, then you will have no problem in Dr. Hornes class. He was one of my favorite professors at SWT.
Horrible. He was unorganized - didn't follow the syllabus or the notes he prepared. Even his study guides were horrible. Tests, even harder. No extra credit whatsoever. Pick someone else but him - absolute horrible teacher.
Great prof. Tests comme off the study guide, if you study, you get an A.
lectures on one thing, tests on another. Just all around worst professor I've ever had.
Horne's a cool guy... he knows what he's talking about though its hard to relate to the test. Study the Review and you will make a good grade. Let's you keep the tests to see how the questions are like.
Started out with Upchurch and the Bio dep. put Horne in the class. Smart man, but VERY unclear on teaching. Expects that the class knows a lot about Chem. Very unorganized, study sheets are 11 pg. long with questions and mult. answers which some of them have the wrong answers on them. Notes on blackboard are out of order. Does Curve Test. Stay Away
Drop this class now!!! His lectures have nothing to do with the tests. You're supposed to study the slides and the study guides, but the slides are not in order and half of the questions on the study guid are wrong. When you talk to him about your grade he is very unclear. Unless you have a good understanding of Biology drop the class right now!
Only reason anyone did well was because he accidently put old tests on blackboard the first week of school and someone saved them and sent them to the entire class. Do not take him. Tests have nothing to do with lectures or the book. If you care about your GPA, I advise against him.
He is hands down, the worst prof ever. Unclear, unorganized, rude, and very unhelpful. Tests are ridculously hard. Even with the curve, passing is difficult. He needs to retire because he obviously does not care about his students. I've never disliked a professor so much. PLEASE avoid him!
awful awful. wait to take it if you have to, he is horrible
Professor Horne is a horrible teacher. It was horrible, i spent WEEKS studying for his exams and still pulled a low C on the first two. without it i would have made 40's on the test. Let me just say the first thing out of his mouth this semester was YOU WILL NOT PASS MY CLASS. dont take him i strongly advise you, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Worst professor EVER!!! He needs to get his act togeather or find another job because he can't teach. I hate him and bio.
Horne is a really nice guy, but a terrible prof. I was in a class of 250 and by the end of the course more than half had dropped, and those who were stil around had no better than a "B". His tests were well over 100 questions long! I think the Final had 200! I got a "D" thank god, but most people were not so fortunate. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!
Im an older student and I had a hard time in this class. he lectured on one thing and tested on another. He seemed to just be an agry man against young people. Always complaining how kids are wasting their parents money and it was his job to send them home packing. I would not take him again!
worst prof I have EVER had! Every email we got from him said we may as well drop the class bc we wont pass.Do you really want a prof like that? Rude, trails off and yells at you when you ask him to repeat himself..everything is our fault, nothing is to be blamed on him.Avoid him at all costs.None of the others who posted ratings were joking!Awful!!
Needs to retire. Simple as that. If you've signed up for this class and would like an idea of what to expect, buy a random Bio book and ride a city bus for an hour next to crazy homeless person. Then once you've read the book while the CHP babbles at you, give yourself a test over another Bio book- this is Horne's class.
I took his class twice and I got a C the second time. Not to mention I had the tests from before. He's boring and useless. I would not recommend him.
I wish I knew about this website before i signed up to take his worthless class. I think a 40 point curve on a test could tell anyone that they are going to fail. But hey if u figure it out a 40 point curve isn't that bad lol
Super hard class, i would not take him!! Test are hard, he doesn't explain anything, and he is hard to understand.
He's horrible.
BEWARE! Though the comments were horrid, I thought I would tough it out. They were not kidding AT ALL. It is dreadful! It is frustrating and I will never take another one of his classes. I never had a question answered nor a concept explained in a comprehensible manner.
If u want to pass bio DONT take with him! Lectures are long and BORING! And sometimes the scantrons would mark questions that i had right Wrong! JUST DONT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!
This old man needs to be forced to retire. Nice guy, cannot teach. Lectures are filled with personal stories and pointless info. Reviews are several hundred questions long and have nothing to do with the test or notes. Listen to the comments, if you take this guy you will FAIL
Do not take this class!! Nice man, but does not know how to teach anymore. Lectures are dry, straight from powerpoints, and he spends most of the time getting off subject with personal stories. The reviews are hundreds of questions long, and most of the answers are near impossible to find. Tests are rediculous, not based on reviews. STAY AWAY!
Do not take him! You can't understand anything he says, he goes off topic several times in each lecture, the reviews are endless and you are not given the correct answers to study, and his curves do nothing to help your grade. He is horrible.
Hard class, lectures are useless read all the chapters learn the information, if you want to slack don't take this class, one good thing is he curves the highest test to 100 so you have a 25-35 point curve usually
One word...AWFUL Prof. He is terrible he flunked me by one point! and wrote me an email that said so close but yet so far away!. He went on and on about random stories that no ones cares about and he was terrible i learned absolutly nothing i had to take it again and got an A w/ another prof. of course, take this as a warning guys save yourself!
I dropped him moments after I met him. Go with FARR and save yourself some money. I ended up with an A in Farr's class,he is the way to go when it comes to BIO.
I really enjoyed his class. He gives you practice tests that are just like the real thing. If you study the practice tests you can make an A. :) Very interesting class, I learned a lot and changed my major after taking him.
IF YOU ARE EVER GOING TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE COMMENTS ON ANY OF THE PROFS, PAY ATTENTION TO ALL THE ONES FOR THIS TEACHER. HE IS THE WORST BIO TEACHER EVER KNOWN TO MAN! HE CANT TEACH SKWACK! SURE, HES A SUPER FUNNY GUY, BUT THAT DOESNT MAKE YOU PASS THIS CLASS, AND NEITHER DO HIS STUPID REVIEW QUESTIONS THAT HE GIVES FOR EVERY TOPIC THAT IS TOUGH
Take hima & u will waste ur time! He rambles way too much, takes forever to explain one little thing, and is completly unclear about it. I think i have learned more by my self than with him. He is totally unhelpfull. Super nice & funny thought. I dont know of any other teachers for bio 1320 at tx state, but DO NOT TAKE HIM!! funny wont help u pass!
There are only 3 grades he gives for this class; fail one and you will flunk it. Those 3 grades are test grades. Thats it! ur sol if you take him! He has been teaching since the 70's, you can totally tell! I couldnt understand one word he said either.
He is AWFUL. I regret taking him! I've given up trying to understand him.
So my final average was an 89. His motto is "close only counts in horseshoes" and offers no extra credit. STAY AWAY. He is useless. His class is ridiculous. HORRIBLE teacher.
Funny old teacher. Easy if you study the study guide that he gives you. He gives a huge curve on the tests. I got an A+, if anyone needs help just email me. [email protected]
Terrible got out of his class as soon as I could. Nice man but can't teach if his life depended on it.
Absolutely horrible. Nice old man who should remain in the lab, but never enter a class room again. Lecture is mandatory and useless
He looks like the old man from the movie Up.
Wow, Horne was absolutely awful. His lectures are hard to follow, and therefore your notes won't be helpful for the test. He didn't use the book at all, so the text couldn't even help you. I barely got through this class, and I'm just glad I passed. However, keep your tests because he just uses the same questions on the final.
Avoid this guy!! He is rude, and pretty useless if you are having problems. He repeats the most simplistic ideas and doesn't go over the harder stuff. Don't expect to actually learn a lot of bio from lectures...you will learn his personal opinions which are biased, discriminatory, and make him sound uneducated... I HATE this class bc of him!!!
He really didn't make biology an interesting subject. He would be talking about one thing then suddenly change the subject and it would have nothing to do with what we had been talking about. His test were pretty hard also
Maybe its time to throw in the towel for him.
I feel sorry for the guy, but all the previous comments speak nothing but the truth. Very hard class. Lectures are incomprehensible, test are long and extremely difficult, and he does not use the book. If you are forced to take him (like I was), save yourself the money and don't buy the book. You won't use it once. Sweet old man, HARD class.
Horne is the best teacher I've ever had. I highly suggest taking his class. His tests are simple and also he is a cool man. We had lunch.
Was easily one of the hardest classes I've had in college... I graduate this next semester. I feel bad just ragging on him on here because he is a nice guy, he just does a bad job teaching the actually things needed to be taught. I wouldn't recommend taking him for any class
Good teacher! Tests aren't to bad because he gives a huge curve and questions are straight from ppt slides. If your taking 1320, get Farr, but for v-phys get horne over garcia! GO TO CLASS, STUDY PPT SLIDES AND FIND AN OLD TEST AND YOU'LL MAKE AN A!
I feel like he sets you up for failure. I really like Biology, but definately not with him as a teacher. DO NOT TAKE HIM! He doesn't use a textbook, his tests are very long and over a bunch of random things at once, he is very boring, and he has a super strict attendance policy.
NO! This is the hardest class I have taken thus far ever. He is unclear, unhelpful(even when I begged for a study session) and has quit taking attendance toards the end of the year, so if you show up, it's pointless. His explanations are all over the place and his review is in a question form, so one never knows if they are studying the right thing.
This was the worst class that I took this year. The materials given out were full of inconsistencies and poor grammar. We never used the book. I was never clear about what to study. I believe that he failed most of our class. DO NOT TAKE BIO FROM HIM!!! It is pointless. You will learn nothing and even if you attend and study you will not pass.
I cannot believe this guy is still alive! Take him before he dies. His bit about the osmosis of immigration is hilarious. Also Garcia sucks, so this guy is great.
I really liked Horne as a teacher. A lot of people didn't like him but he will always answer questions you have and will stay after class if you don't understand. Study the powerpoints and notes for the tests. The tests are less difficult if you always go to class. He's a very good teacher if you use what he gives you.
He's a good teacher if you actually pay attention. Study power points and any study guides he gives you for the test. Pretty funny guy, he's a clone of the man in the movie "up"
Do not take, it's a death trap, like the sand monster from Starwars. Poor, confusing lectures. Impossible tests. No extra credit, nor anything else. Be prepared like Luke was, not Boba Fett...take someone else.
DONT TAKE HIM. He cant talk in a straight line, he lost our tests and we had to retest and he gives out study guides that are 200- 400 questions long. Tests are hard and inconsistent with information given in the book and there was no homework or extra credit. The only reason I passed this class was because of the massive curves he had to give us.
Dr. Horne is nice and knowledgeable but not a good teacher. He goes on tangents constantly. We just had to memorize his 400 question review and hope some of them would make it to the test. Old exams are helpful. Worthless book. Take someone else if possible. Missed an A by 2 points.
Run! Run while you can!!! Get out that class.
He isnt a very good prof. the lectures are boring and straight off of the power point but the tests arent. he didnt use the 80$ book i bought.
A tired old man who cannot stand the thought of retiring and spending most of his time around the wife, He's very rich, owns about a half dozen apartment complexs around San Marcos. AVOID.
Professor Horne is great at Biology, but not in the context of what an introduction level Biology class should be. He does go on many tangents and it is difficult at times to know what is on his test. He gives reviews, but majority of the questions are completely different when you actually take the test. Goodluck!
Do NOT take Horne. His lectures are incomprehensible, riddled with folksy backwoods idioms that mean nothing and ramblings about things you won't be tested on. His tests are poorly designed, poorly written, and reflect 0% of the things lectured on. Indeed, lots of questions seem to come right out of thin air. WORST. PROF. EVER. AVOID!
Worst teacher i have ever had the test are really hard and its almost impossible to prepare for them other than the first one, DONT TAKE HIM
Worst professor I have ever dealt with, bar none!!! Told the class the final was going to cover questions from the three previous exams and that all questions would come from them. WRONG! Only about 15 questions were and the rest he pulled out of thin air. Poorly written with many mistakes!
One of best teachers I have ever had; but the test are really hard and its almost impossible to prepare for them other than the first one
Professor Horne is great at Biology, but not in the context of what an introduction level Biology class should be. He great detail like the book and it is difficult at times to know what is on his test. He gives reviews, but majority of the questions are completely different from his examples when you actually take the test.Very interseting
Do not take Prof. Horne if you do not plan on coming to class because you will get a D or F. His lectures are from power points, easy to follow, but he adds more information in class. Although challenging, I learned a lot of every day biology, good at answer questions. I would take him again.
A lot of people had a hard time in this class, but he literally gave us the answers to the tests. If you go to class actually study the study guides he hands out, you should be fine. The study guides and tests were lengthy, but it was all multiple choice and you have like two weeks to study the EXACT TEST QUESTIONS. I would take him again.
Impossible tests, but tests are curved. No extra credit, nor credit for attendance. Interesting lectures and helpful. Hard!
He's funny, but it's a really hard class. He never uses the textbook. He only uses poorly made powerpoints. Incredibly hard to maintain interest. I do not recommend him.
Hard, interesting. Don't expect high school like study guides where questions are the same as test. Very helpful in answering questions after class which allowed me to pass.
Good class, enteraining well organized with power points, interesting lectures. Expects attendance, and no extra points. Tests challenging, but from mass of material he covers in class. Exams curved with high grade being a 100 pts. I recommend!
Organized well with power points, but he adds lots of information in class. Helpful, funny, interesting. Would take again.
It's almost pointless to go to class. He puts reviews in the powerpoints, which he puts on TRACS. He also gives out more reviews on the day before a test. Study those reviews and you will be golden. Plus he curves the tests. The final is a free for all. The reviews didn't help at all with the final; it was unlike any of his other tests. Good luck!
Best teacher I have had at Texas State. Organized, fair, helpful and very friendly. Does not put up with foolishness. Explains things well and likes to answer questions. Take him.
Good, interesting teacher. But hard because so much information. If you do not come to class and do not want to learn, take someone else.
Enjoyed his class very much, but must come to class. Uses power points, organized & covers in class what he expects you to know. If you want to goof-off and not come to class take an easier teacher.
enjoyed class; organized power points, funny, easy going, but does not put up with bad behavior of talking in class. Relates biology to real life and likes students to ask questions.Challenging. Recommend him to real "students',
good and interesting teacher; curves tests so average grade is "C". I recommend if you come to class. No extra credit or points for attendance.
He is very knowledgeable but tends to get off topic a lot! His tests are pretty much the exact same thing as the review so study the review and you'll be fine!
My most interesting class. Learned a lot of new stuff. Recommend.
Would take again, good university class. Relates biology to every day living.
Good teacher, answers all questions with humor, explains things well. I did not attend class regularly and missed out on a lot of test information. If you are lazy, take someone else. Other teachers give more A's and B's. But take him if you want learn how biology effects our live. Recommend for serious students.
Very good class, shows how animals adapt to environment. Friendly & jokes around. but he should have thrown two girls out of class for talking during lecture. Recommend for minors and majors, especially geography majors like myself.
Explains information well for a difficult class. Friendly and keeps you interested. Encourages questions. Definitely recommend.
He is constantly off topic during lecture, says he has an attendance policy but he doesn't. His "pop quizzes" are really for extra credit and he never gives any. His tests are just like the review he gives out the class before the test. Do the review and you're golden. No need to go to class or even get the textbook. Don't take this guy.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He rambles all class, the review which he hands out the day before the test is not even helpful, it only mimics like 10 of the actual test questions and the others are often off topic. I am a straight A student/Honors student currently making a C because of this class. Do not be fooled by anyone who has given him a good review.
As he said, it's a university level class, 30% A's& B's. Highest test grade = 100 so everyone's grade curved to 70% average. Most TXSTU classes give mostly A's& B's, 80%+, his his. No POP tests. I am taking him next semester since I learned so much about how biology relates to life.
Enjoyed his class. Exam grades curved to 70% average. Most of my TXSTU classes give mostly A's& B's. Does not put up with BS behavior in class. No talking, rudeness not permitted. Take him if you want to learn something,& no extra point for coming to class.
Interesting, helpful, exlains topics well. Discusses everything on test so its helpful to come to class. Recommend! How can a straight A/honors senior make make a "C" in a freshman class of 200 where average class grade is "C"? And blame the teacher.
Helpful, explains things well, likes questions. Tess over what is covered in class so come to class.Too much information, but I recommend. How can a teacher be blamed for a senior straight A/honor student making a "C" in a class of 200 where the average grade is "C". 100 students are doing better than they are.
Helpful, explains things well, likes questions, intertaining. Tests over what is covered in class so come to class. Too much information, but I recommend. Large class 200+ the average class grade is "C".
Explains things, answers questions, friendly ok teacher. No extra credit for coming to class, Tests over class material.
Hard tests with lots of information, but curves. Relates biology to life experiences, take him but come to class. No credit for just coming to class
Honors/A student here to say I am now making an A, but not because I feel like I've learned something in this class but because only about 10% of the class had an A so now he is curving it so I believe it's 35% has an A/B. I have to take Modern Bio 2 and it'd be cool if I actually had learned enough to do so.
Good, interesting, demanding teacher. Just come to class, learn the powerpoints and study guides. Recommend.
Good teacher, relates biology to real issues. Lectures convinced me to change majors from Education to Agriculture/nutrition.
good teacher, explains topics well, tests over lectures
Hard class, but very interesting. enjoyed and learned allot.
Good teacher, must come to class those that don't make Ds and Fs. Answers questions and encourages them
He is constantly off topic!! His test are nothing like the reviews he gives out so they are pointless to do!! He never answers questions in a manner we can understand! He is nice but his class is designed to be curved. If you pass the test you've obviously had the class!
Like others said, he rambles and is at times incoherent. His reviews have questions that don't even have a correct answer, same with his tests. Will email coaches if you miss class (didn't happen to me, just a class mate). Very confusing, even though he tries to use everyday examples.
Good teacher enjoyed class. Funny and entertaining.Learn the power points, come to class, you'll do good.Gives study questions. Tries to get students to come to class, but most students don't come and fail. He does not tolerate talking in class like many of my other do.
Enjoyed his class. He was always smiling and joking. Learned a lot, helpful and encourage questions. Recommend.
My favorite teacher this semester; interesting not boring for non-major in biology. Power points easy to follow and discussed well, but come to class. recommend
Friendly, encourages questions, gives reviews good power points. Expects class attendance, but is fair about absences. Does a good job.
Good, friendly likes questions.Relates biology issues that everyone should be interested in and encourages discussions. Test fair and with reviews, but with lots of information. recommend
Friendly, well-organized lectures. Follows and explains power points. Tests cover material discussed in class. Good teacher
Made class interesting for non-majors. Explained material so it was easily understood.
He was one of the most interesting professors that i have had since attending Texas State University. He was very good at relating complicated science into our regular everyday life style. I am happy that Texas State University has such knowledgeable professors. I would take him again.
I really enjoyed his classes, he made my biology life so much more manageable!
I enjoyed going to class. It always kept my interest.
It was a joy having him as a professor. Recommend
Never in my life have I done so poorly in a class. The man lectured over genetics for two weeks, gave us exam reviews over genetics, and then tested us over plants. He insulted everyone that did poorly on the tests. Show up or not, it won't matter because you'll have no idea what's happening either way. He does look like the guy from Up though.
Good, interesting class, but he worries too much about students who don't come to class and do not want to learn biology. reccommend
Horne is a nice guy; he's funny too. But, his class is very unclear. His power points, lectures, and exams don't have any relevance to one another. However, his review is helpful (if the answers on it are right. Sometimes he gives reviews with wrong answers) for the test.
Don't do this to yourself. He never lectured over anything relevant. His tests were impossible. He gave us reviews with 300+ questions. Said he wasn't taking attendance, but actually did. He's adorable, he knows his stuff (talked about anything and everything irrelevant to the course), but he's not a good choice if Biology isn't your cup of tea.
Don't do this to yourself. He said he wouldn't be taking attendance, but actually did. He doesn't lecture over anything relevant to the course. His tests are impossible; he gave us 300+ question reviews and then the exam was like a completely different subject. He's adorable, funny, and nice, but if Biology isn't your cup of tea, don't take him.
He provided me with a wonderful and challenging semester, forced me out of my comfort zone which opened my mind to new and interesting knowledge. wish all my professors provided me with an education that was as challenging and meaningful. Highly recommend. But come to class!!
favorite teacher this semester. Relates biology to current and every day events. Class was interesting and fun.
He finds a way to teach the material in his own way and doesn't go by the book. If you want to pass his class you need to go because most of the things you need to know aren't located in the Powerpoints he just speaks about them. Its a difficult class and he says the same jokes every class.
Prepares you for professional medical schools. Entertaining, friendly, explains topics well and like questions. Enjoyed, take him again.
Reviews are 300+ questions, but exams are exactly like reviews. Sweet professor! He gives curves (which saved my semester)
Went to class everyday, some days he took attendance. Test reviews with 300+ questions (not all the answers on the study guide are correct) and only like 92 questions were on each tests. Tests are graded out of uncommon amount of points (80, 70, 80, 60). Babbles on about irrelevant things, double check scantrons makes sure they are graded correctly
Good teacher. He relates biology to current issues and how it effects things around us. Relaxed, teaches from power points that he explains in class, gives lots of study questions and likes questions in class. If you don't want to come to class and learn about biology take someone else. I am in his class next semester.
Uses power points in lecture and explains them in class. Tests from class. Tough but explains topics well. Fun class
Enjoyed class. He taught me that evolution is about change and not just man coming from monkeys as I had learned from other teachers.
Never thought I would like biology but I did. Relates biology to true life events. Hard, fun class.
I think he prepared me for Med. School, if I get in. Good class integrates many biologychemistry topics. Adjusts grades off highest class grade so the best students get A's and B's sort of like a bell curve. Lots of information so you to come to class. Tests come from lectures.
Dr. Horne made this class much more difficult than it needed to be. The information is both interesting and relevant, but his presentation of it is very poor. His lectures are unorganized and he makes many, many mistakes. I was always worried that tests would be graded incorrectly. He does give out test reviews, but are about 270 questions long.
The professor is really nice and funny, his lectures are interesting and entertaining; you learn a lot from them. I suggest you go to class so the material can be easier to study when you do the review. Make sure to study the review because it is mainly just like the test, except that the questions are mixed and only about 100 are chosen.
Best Bio class ever! He's an amazing professor with a great personality that engages students into his well taught lectures. I over going to class and listening to his lectures because it helped me understand biology better plus he's hilarious! Definitely recommend; just make sure to really study the review and the test will be easy for you
Goes into depth about physiology; really helped me in Med school. Enjoyed his class.
Had two of his classes four years ago, 3421 and 4450. They helped me and prepared me more than any others during my PhD degree program at OSU. Related chemistry, physiology & ecology. Very likeable teacher.
As a person, I like this professor. He's got the silly old guy thing in his favor. But he doesn't communicate clearly. The tests include a lot of content that is never specifically discussed and it very hard to find elsewhere. His reviews are 200 questions long. He's got some crazy expectations, but at the very least he curves the grade.
He talks a lot in his lectures and mostly about stuff that doesn't even relate to the class and therefore repeats the same information over and over because he forgets what he was talking about
Enjoyed his class; recommend.
Frances Horne is a really sweet man. If you are a student who is determine to pass, you will succeed. However, if you are just taking this curse to get by, you are in the wrong class. If you want a challenge, this is definitely the class to take. As mentioned before, as long as you try you won't fail. Don't skip class and memorize PowerPoint.
I have around 100 credits so far, and out of all the classes I have had this was the worst. EVER. He is rude, yelled at us, cursed, and lied. He gives 300 questioned 27 page reviews days before the tests and then expects you to understand everything. Lectures comprise of inaccurate non related babbling and 40 minutes related to Biology.
Good class, recommend.
Good class . lots of information. Relates biology to true life.
Friendly, helpful teacher. Explains tough topic well. Relates biology to current events
Made coming to class fun; relates biology to current issues. Gets annoyed about talking in class and absences. Will take the second class from him.
I liked his grading system: highest grade on test adjusted to 100%, This pulls everyone's grade up. Students who study lecture material study questions do well. His study questions are not ncessarily the ones on the exam, but the same material is.
So for an old guy, he has a funny sense of humor and he really is a cool guy. As far as the actual course, its difficult. Especially if bio isnt your thing which its not for me. The amount of material to learn is so much and you really will have to study.
Favorite teacher last semester; learned alot about biologu
Good teacher, funny, enjoyed class. Likes current events in biology.
Enjoy his class; explains topic well, seeks questions & humerous. Covers lots of material in vert. phys.
DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU MUST. Incoherent and off topic lectures. Doesn't follow the syllabus, HARD tests that are also confusing for the number of mistakes in them. He's completely out of touch and teaching from the 50's. Even though he doesn't keep to the syllabus, you absolutely must read the book if you expect to learn anything.
Abusive, thinks it's okay to make extremely inappropriate jokes in class, rude and condescending. Best of all he has a mandatory attendance policy which means you have to be subjected to it all. avoid avoid avoid.
Covers physiology and some biochemistry to explain animal interactions; and compares how the different vertebrates function. Easy going, enjoyable class, Test are comprehensive but from what he covers in class and power points. Book necessary as reference. recommend, attendance necessary to do well. Those not coming to class do poorly and gripe.
Tests come from power points and lectures, come to class and learn material. This where all the questions come from. Follow syllabus and study power points before class, ask questions. He appreciates questions. Enjoyed class.
Professor Horne is a funny guy, and very stylish, he is the type of person that you could like outside of class. His powerpoints are very confusing and all over the place, though I don't think that's his fault, he's old so I'd bet that he relies on others to make his presentations for him. Tests are long and tough. Sometimes he goes too in depth.
Enjoyed class and learned a lot of biology. He explained the power points in class so attending class is important. Does not enforce attendance. Will take his other class next semester.
Makes class interesting for non biology majors. Test cover lots of material but he adjusts class test average to C. Gives study questions before exams over power points and material covered in class. Expects students to attend class, Very friendly and relaxed.
He might teach a intro for non-majors class but, its a hard class. I find him to be "old school" and smart. I loved him just hated the class.
Hard test, lectures don't help,power-points don't help,
Asks and answers questions, exam thorough over lecture and power points. Hard tests but curve so average always a "C". I am taking thim next semester.
Favorite teacher, friendly, study questions, relates biology to current events.
enjoyed being in his class and learned a lot. it was fun.
Had an awesome semester in his class! Learned alot Makes class interesting and fun..
He's a really cool guy. Loves the subject he's teaching so he tries to make it as interesting as possible for non-biology majors. Recommend, but come to class
There were only three tests and the final, no other grades. The tests are long and hard to understand. The lectures are hard to follow. On the day of the first test he said "I'll be surprised if anyone makes a 70." And no one did. The best thing about the class is he grades on a bell curve to help you pass.
Enjoyed coming to class, funny, explains topics well. Makes class interesting for non-majors. Expects you to come to class. No extra credit.
Answers questions and encourages students to enter into discussions. Exams come from lecture/power points. enjoyed class. Curves grades.
Old enough to have the Bejamin button effect where he can verbalize his thoughts onto the paper tests and in lectures on the same level that a 2nd grader can. Will hear "I have hearing aids speak up" when you are on your knees begging him to fix his own mess up.
Not a very good professor. Course is poorly organized and doesn't make any sense. However, he is a very nice guy just not a good professor.
Enjoyed going to class; interesting and fun. recommend
Test questions from lectures and power points; lots of difficult material but he explains it. Encourages questions and asks students questions to encourage participation. Don't skip class you'll miss some test questions. Class is not boring. Prepares for medical school.
my biochemistry class this semester is more meaningful because of what I learned in vertebrate physiology class last semester. Horne's class gave me a MUCH better understanding of how the biology and chemistry fit together and work. I am now able to figure out answers to questions that I don't completely understand by reading. Excellent teacher!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He is the worst teacher I've ever had and I'm an A/B student. He said in the beginning don't buy the textbook because there is too much information and power points are either too wordy or a bunch of pictures that he DOES NOT EXPLAIN. Goes off on life tangents more than teaching. You wont learn a thing but random facts..
Integrates biochemistry, physiology and ecology to explain how animals are able to live where they do. Encourages questions and class discussions. Very friendly, but come to class. My best class and teacher.
Fair, friendly and helpful. Likes questions and will answer any questions. Tests from power points and class presentations, so go to class. Fun but hard.
If you have ever seen "Up" he is Mr. Fredericksen... class is boring but I personally do not like biology. He needs better powerpoints. He does provide reviews for the tests but they sometimes dont help. Study them as much as you can.
I've learned quite a bit and enjoyed horn's class.
Dr. Horne was unorganized and ill-prepared for lectures. Asking him questions outside of lecture is pointless; his answers are long, confusing, and do nothing to help your understanding. He answered his phone during class almost daily. 0/10 would not recommend.
Learned quite a bit and enjoyed the class this semester. Interesting and brings in current events.
Interesting class and brings in current events. Very friendly and wants everyone to come to class.
Friendly, brings together ecology, biochemistry and physiology, He explains what you need to know how animals adapt to where they live. Fair grader.
Had Horne in vert-physiol, 3421, and physiol-eco, 4350. Friendly, engaging makes class interesting if you want to learn. 4350j was better class because everyone a major. Vert-physiol had too many non-science majors who did not come to class or want to learn Outlaws cellphones and computers. Test very fair.
Made biology interesting. Related it to current events.
He relates biology to everyday situations making biology more interesting. He also drops the lowest test grade which helps a lot and there is plenty of extra credit. Come to class and study power points. Likes questions.
Learned a lot of practical biology. good class. Study power points, come to lectures ask questions. I may change majors.
Puts biology chemistry and ecology together. Good reviews. Tests from lectures. Fun class
Good teacher, take.
He inspired me to be a better student & I loved learning in his class. What I learned in class helped me receive a better grades in my subsequent biology classes. His humor and passion for teaching showed in his classes.
I took Environmental Physiology of Animals and never got the chance to thank him for teaching the course. It was one of the most challenging I've taken but it really pushed me to think outside the box of memorizing and made me critically think. As a future physician, I will be using tools you taught me.
Very nice professor, he is really kind and funny, for his test's he gives out a review, as long as you study that review you will pass his tests. The tests are basically verbatim word for word what is listed in the review, if you memorize it you can get an A. He is really funny in lecture and I found the lectures very interesting.
I had to drop the class for medical reasons but I really appreciated the time he put into the class. I really enjoyed my time in there and his lecturing style. Good teacher.
This class brought together a lot of concepts I learned from previous courses, and helped me understand how they all fit together. I really enjoyed learning about how organisms are shaped by their environment and I thought the lectures were interesting. Dr. Horne's tests were fair, go to class and study the lecture material you will do well.
Attendance wasn't mandatory, but towards the end of the semester, you'd be glad you came. "Come on, step up to the plate- not the dinner plate," is one of his over-used lines, but Professor Horne's so darn adorable, you're gonna end up forgiving him. Study the reviews for the tests--the answers are given. All in all, a relatively easy bio class.
He is very unorganized and gets off topic a lot. He gives reviews that are worded very weird and sometimes gives answers that are wrong. He said he takes attendance but he does not and he doesn't give extra credit either. Not recommended.
Applies the context/contentof the course to everyday life, rel life situations. Sense of humor made class enjoyable.
Excellent lectures and engaging. Good class. Lots of information for nonmajors.
Awesome teacher, friendly, makes class fun. Lots of information for nonmajors. Come to class and you will do well
Absolutely ridiculous. He's funny, he's well- educated in his field, but I took a 1320 class (I'm a Liberal Arts Junior, I'm honestly just trying to pass the class) but the amount of material is too much. Our final is cumulative- 90+ questions from past 3 exams, plus another 300+ questions. Doesn't drop lowest, and is really unclear on TRACS. Bruh
I am an A student and am struggling to pull one off in here. If you like structure, this class is not for you. Curves tests but gives you reviews with most answers being wrong. Also a few of the test reviews are 400-500Qs. Not sure if this is him trying to trick us or he is just really old? Never again....
You get 3 or 4 test and not much grades besides that, the study guide is long and boring but learn it inside and out and you will be fine for the tests! Attendance is not important at all.
Honestly, he was one of the worst professors I have taken so far. Lots of PowerPoints and a ridiculous amount of test review questions (that may not even be on the test). Some reviews are answered but may not even be correct. One question was "true (A) or false (B)" and the scantron marked "C" which wasn't even an option. Easy but not worth it.
Good class if you want to learn biology and how biology relates to daily life. must come to class, test questions come from published power points and class lectures. Miss class discussions of power points & you'll do poorly on exams. He scolds tudents who do not come to class & do poorly. Enjoyable class, recommend
FUN, ENJOYABLE CLASS. TAUGHT US ABOUT DNA AND HOW DNA WILL CHANGE OUR LIVES. STRESSED IMPORTANCE OF GENETICS. ENCOURAGED QUESTIONS AND CLASS TO INTERACT IN DISCUSSIONS. ENJOYED CLASS WILL CHANGE MY MINOR TO BIOLOGY.
Knows and can explain the subject very well. Answers questions if students have a concern, however this class has an over whelming amount of information. Grades are based on exams, though never emphasizes what one should study or the key points in his lecture. Would not register for another class with this professor.
fun teacher, story telling connecting history and biology.
This has been the worst class I've taken at TXST. This professor is a terrible lecturer and often brings up irrelevant/unrelated topics. The reviews he provides aren't always correct so double check the answers. The tests have multiple duplicated questions and repeat answers choices. Always double check your grade because he makes mistakes often.
Enjoyed class . Gives lots of questions to study, focuses on what's important for exams. We get to keep tests. Come to class to understand power points that relate to current events & everyday life. BS or talking in class not tolerated. If you not here to learn, miss class & are here to goof-off, take someone else. Favorate class
Super boring class, i didn't really learn anything honestly even though i showed up for every class. He gives tons of review sheets and they have the exact same questions as the test. Study those and you'll do fine on tests. Low attendance will make him upset so show up or he will require attendance. Dont buy the book. Got an A and didn't need book
Good professor, friendly and relates biology to current events to class. I studied hard and learned a lot making a B. Likes questions. Does not put up with BS in class, like talking. Expects students to act like adults and come to class. Enjoyed coming to class. Wish he taught the second beginning class.
He inspired me to be a better student. I loved learning in his biology class. What learned in his class helped me receive a better grade in my subsequent biology classes. His humor and passion far teaching shows in his class.
I liked this class because you did not need to buy a book! He is a little old school and goes off his power points for tests. I thought he was rather easy since I attended his lectures.
I got an A in every class my first semester, EXCEPT NON MAJOR BIOLOGY. This class is supposed to be easy, but the professor is SO disorganized. Does not give information in a way that is concise or understandable. He gives you several 40 page powerpoints, of jumbled, incomprehensible information, and expects you do to 300 questions on them.
Lots of info for nonmajor class, but it relates to current events. Fun, friendly, recomment.
He is a nice guy, and is also very funny. However, he teaches about a lot of irrelevant things that have little to do with the actual material. He is very unorganized and his powerpoints are very unclear. His tests have lots of typos and make it very confusing. He does curve though so thats a plus.
Do not take him, I repeat do not take him. He is super scatter brained and the test is nothing like his lectures. He gives a review but be prepared for it to be 180 + questions that doesn't pertain to what he "taught" in class. He is a super sweet guy just not a great teacher.
Only graded on four exams and the final. Lectures are long and not organized. Gives reviews for exams but they are long and confusing. Exams are confusing as well but he does give a curve depending on the highest grade. I would NOT recommend taking him.
Don't take this course... Professor Horne is a nice guy, but his class is very disorganized and his lectures are more confusing than helpful. I'm an A student and I'm struggling to keep a B in this course just because of the lack of clarity in his lectures.
His personality is nice but the work is not. Lectures include a lot of non useful information for test. Reviews asre given right before the test but is impossible to retain the all the info because it has like 300 hundred questions. This class was extremely frustrating and stressful.
Lectures from power points & adds information an explains all. If you don't come to class you miss a lot of information. Gives review questions (250-300) that come from lectures and power points and are on the exams. Laziness & absences earn D or Fs. Fun class I recommend.
Hard class for non majors cause so much information especially for the many that do not come to class. Friendly likes questions, engages class. follow study guides and study questions, come to class. Teaches about current biology events like DNA, cloning. Take someone else if you don't want to learn
Good class for biology majors; relates ecology, biochemistry and physiology. Explains chemistry is way you can understand it even if not a chemistry minor. Tests off power points and in class lecture. Easy going.
Learn importance of DNA to every day life for all students today. Interesting fun class. Very friendly.
made my biochemstry class more meaningful; explained how physiology & ecology all tie to allow vertebrates to live where they do. friendly, helpful and lots of information. Gives study guide questions to help you focus on information.
He is a terrible lecturer. He is very unorganized and his tests have a million typos. Only reason I do well is because he curves. BEWARE! DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
The professor is such a nice guy but teaching is not his strong point or his calling. Gives out 300+ question reviews two days before the test, most of which hadn't even been taught by him. Lectures are long and he often gets side tracked. Only plus is he gives small curves on his tests, but even then he doesn't do those correctly either. 1/10
Makes biology interesting explaining how dna works and how it is being changed today. You must come to class and half don't so they do bad on exams. Class average is a "C". Enjoyed, but it's demanding class. helpful friendly.
Interesting, enjoyable class. Lots of information and study questions that are helpful-questions over what he discusses in class. If you don't plan to come to class, take some else. Every question on tests were talked about in class. Biology has so much more information than my education classes.
Prof. Horne is... quirky. He's a cute, funny old man with a thick East Texas accent, but a mess of a teacher. His lectures are hard to follow (especially with his accent), and his powerpoints are a mess of fonts and content. No one in my class learned anything. "Slap yourself awake" & "are we on the same page or even the same planet?" get annoying.
His class was only 3 tests and a final, all the material was online so you did not necessarily have to go to class, but if you do it helps a lot. His reviews are literally the test which is pretty cool. I could have received an A easily in this class, but I would print and study the material the morning of the test. Sometimes offers extra credit.
Good teacher and good , fun class convenienced me to change my major to biology. He should take roll and fail those that do not come to class. All they do is complain and do not want to learn, and take classes where evryone makes an "A".
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY'S CLASS, PLEASE. His lectures have very little substance to them, and are aided by messy and unfocused powerpoints. It's just as easy to skip class and study from quizlets. He curves a lot, which helps, and while he has a grandpa-like charm, it's very clear that he isn't the best for this class.
If you enjoy lectures about OJ Simpson right before a test, then this is the class for you! Very kind and sweet elderly man but really could use a TA or SI. Tests are very hard and often have repeat questions with different answers. And yup, you probably will get it wrong. Curves tests, though! Drops about 10 questions per test.
Enjoyed his class; good teacher, class very helpful. Likes questions, friendly & relaxed. Expects students to come to class. Biology like all my classes; too many students weren't here to learn, do not come to class, whine too much or expect extra credit for just showing up. Ties biology to current issues made me want to learn more about DNA
I had a great time in class, he made me interested in biology. Heavy on information, explains topics, encourages questions and participation.
Don't take him if you can avoid it. His lectures put you to sleep because the slides have so much info on them and he rambles on forever. In the beginning he gave study guides with answers that had over 200 questions and it turned out he takes about 60 from the study guide for the tests. So if you can memorize that's good.
Thoroughly enjoyed the class and definitely will take this knowledge with me. Good teacher
Had a wonderful semester in his Ecological Physiology class. I learned a lot about biology and the way the world and our bodies function. Brought together chemistry, physiology and ecology in a way it could be easily understood.
Enjoyed his class. Recommend.
Please avoid this class if you can. Very unorganized
Good professor, come to class, lectures follow power points, ask questions. Very friendly, encourages questions. Never asks questions on exams that were not presented in class. Relates biology to current events. Recommend.
You will not pass. Worst professor ever. Don't even try. I contiunuously went to his office hours for help and guidance. He told me to drop the class because I wasn't educated enough. Um, tell that to my 4.0 average.
Friendly, very helpful and will explain biology until you get it. What I liked was he made 1320 biology interesting by relating it to current events. Come to class ask questions, study power points, lecture note class and example questions. Exams mostly over what he talks about in class. My favorite teacher.
Wonderful semester, learned more than I ever expected. thanks
Excellent teacher that brought ecology, biochemistry and physiology together. Explains difficult topics to a level where students can understand them. Gets annoyed if you miss class. recommend
Friendly, likes questions, explains topic well. recommend.
absolutely 100 percent one of the worst teacher/professors I have ever taken a class from. boring lectures, gets off topic, should honestly be retired. His reviews give wrong answers, and he can't even give a proper assessment online without messing it up. Please save your time and money and do NOT take this class. Utter waste of time.
Good lectures and power points. Give study questions, but too many. Make biology interesting. Recommend
Please save your money and time. Do not take this class. He was maybe good back then, but now his classes are so disorganized. By far the worst teacher/professor I have ever taken a lecture from. I showed up to all lectures, did all assignments and still struggled. Students would email him, and he responds with "relax". Very frustrating, and rude.
Horne's study guides are literally the exams. But he is not a good professor at all. His power points are overloaded with unnecessary information, info that does not help for exams. Very unorganized professor. Study guides are partially correct so that makes it harder for us. Its a good idea to attend class, but its hard to drag yourself to class
Professor Horne is possibly the WORST Professor I have had at Texas State. He hands out reviews that are 80-100 plus Questions, half of which will not be on the test. His lectures are extremely hard to follow because he goes on tangents half of the time so hope youre good at Bio because you will be teaching yourself this course. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!
horrible professor. unclear grading and notes. gives curves bc everyone fails tests. I failed every test but got As with the curves. no textbook even tho he says so. abt 200 question review for each test, almost exactly like the tests. tests and notes have horrible grammar cant even understand questions. he is like 90 years old. look at quizlets.
favorite teacher, likes questions, good study questions, very friendly. Class attendence necessary for questions from lectures that follow powerpoints. If you miss lots of classes your grade will suffer. His favorite is "if you do not attend class you'll probably not show up to a job
Good teacher joking and interacting with class. brings together ecology, biochemistry and physiology in explaining how animals adapt to the environment. Explains topics at level that class can understand especially biochemical ones. Fair grader, highly recommend.
Dr. Horne is friendly, helpful and encouraging. What I like about him is that he does not put up with BS. In class talking students get called down as do students with many absences. Many of my classes allow students to talk during lecture, very rude. Explains topics where non-biologists can understand them. Recommed
professor Horne is such a good professor and he really cares for his students. If you dont go to class you lose the opportunity for him to know you. He will stay after class to answer any questions and help on the reviews. If you put in the effort he will make an effort to help you.
Prof. Horne was a sweet man but this was so unorganized. Lectures are long and scattered & he goes back and forth on PowerPoints that make no sense. He did care about our understanding of the subject, but it was hard to grasp the content. 3 exams and the cumulative final were the only grades. Again he was a very nice guy but I would not take again.
I learned a great deal in this class and I got an A. He is a great professor. I recommend him for any one who wants to come to class and learn biology; be respectful and not talk in class. Related current events to biology. If you do not come to class for lectures and depend only on powerpoints, your grade will suffer.
Fun class, smiling often. I in looked forward coming to class and never .understood way so many were absent. Introduces current issues and how DNA used is used in medicine and solving crimes. Seeks questions and interaction with students. Take!
Dr. Horne made ecological physiology engaging and challenging to a group of students with a variety of backgrounds, for this, I thank him.. I'll make sure not to "stand there like a toadstool" and let my life slap me around when challenges present themselves. Enjoyable class.
You will be confused the entire semester about what is going on but he gives test reviews that are exactly like the test. There are online GECC assignments that aren't a grade but will add points to the cumulative 130 question final. Overall 3 tests about 80 Qs each & a cumulative final.
Loved his biology class. Good teacher, explains things well, likes questions.
Good teacher; enjoyed class.
Good teacher, friendly, helpful. Relates biochemistry, physiology & ecology. Good bring together course.
Good class for non biology majors; funny, friendly and like questions.
Prof Horne taught only through powerpoint lectures. Had 3 tests and a Final, no dropped tests. Uses a hearing aide so have to shout so he hears you. Typical old white dude mentality. Both his study guides and tests can have pretty egregious spelling and grammar errors. But he curves the test grades like a madman.
Really interested in the subject matter and really enjoyed learning how animals are adapted to their environment. His class and the Zoology class that Ive taken are the two most interesting (to me) that Ive taken so far. His class helped me focus on what I want to do after I graduate. Highly recommend.
Terrible professor, asked if I could get midterm excused since my brother's wedding was the same day, he agreed and ended up still failing me for the midterm with no chance or offer of retaking it or dropping it even though his syllabus said otherwise. Also does terrible in class drawings that have no resemblance to the topic. Waste of time/money
Really nice and funny person, but not tech-savvy enough to work with students at ALL over the computer. Makes up his own rules as he goes literally up to the day of, sometimes hours before the exam. He doesn't actually take attendance and doesn't make you read. Makes things as easy as but has no perspective on what trying to learn from him is like.
I deeply enjoyed Dr. Horne's biology class. He always came up to the plate (not the dinner plate) showed up to class with a smile on his face. Very passionate professor who has revived my passion for Biology. Even though this semester had an unexpected ending, he handled the pandemic situation well. Recommend for students serious about College.
I wanted to thank him for his valuable time, and for your passionate spirit over the topic you teach. He is such a wonderful, spirited professor, and I wanted tot hank him so much for making a topic that Im not too fond of, personally- pretty interesting. You are one of the greatest professors. Thank you for a great semester.
I deeply enjoyed his biology class. He always came to the plate (not the dinner plate) and showing up to class with a smile on your face. He is a very passionate professor who has revived my passion for Biology even though this semester was disrupted.
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR BIOLOGY ! PLEASE TAKE ANYONE ELSE. He was extremely unorganized, did not know what he was doing. You will pass the class based on your work ethic and the professor ! I literally failed because of him. Dont take him !
Explains material well, very friendly, likes questions. based only on class pre-virus. On line messed up class with not personal interaction.
Enjoyed class even though it went on line with the virus stuff. Power points were good and his audio helpful. In class lectures were interesting. He tries to bring topics like ecology, physiology and biochemistry together. Explains topics in ways that students can understand them. Recommend.
I haven't been in contact with Prof. Horne since transfered to UT Austin, but I wanted to rate him, as he left an indelible impression on my academic career. Being a Canadian living in TX wasn't an easy transition, but he made me feel welcome and comfortable. He always encouraged me to study hard attend lectures & would succeed. Miss his smile.
