Good lectures, good material, good approach, a lot to remember for tests.
Great Professor, very helpful, A lot to remember for test though.
Martin is fabulous!I learned a ton.I got A but had to work hard! TIP:GO TO CLASS
makes fun of people, talks too fast (bring recorder), lots of studying, sadistic
Tests are hard, but he is a pretty good professor.
Great teacher! You must learn the concepts though, not just remember facts.
Really hard class. Very informative, clear, fast-talking teacher. Be prepared to study A LOT.
He's really nice and helpful. Make sure you study hard for the tests....LOTS of slides to remember!!
so impossibly hard. funny guy, but hated the class with an intense burning passion

slides are torture... take good notes and keep up with the readings
This is the hardest class I've ever had! No lie. Study everything! Slides are the worst. Nice guy and very very helpful if you go to his office, but be ready to weep when it's test time. Keep up with the readings, and ALWAYS come to class!
Great Professor, reminds me of Steve Martin. Tests are really hard, lots of info to remember, but you can learn a lot

One of the best teachers at UCF! I really liked him, even if it meant recording every lecture and visiting his office to get help. This class is a lot of work so if you're not willing, then don't take him. Make sure you read and use flash cards!
He is very clear, and willing to help.
If you LOVE art history take this class. Tests are not as difficult if you read the text and make flashcards. He is a super nice professor. Extremely helpful and funny. Make sure to visit him in his office so he gets to know you.
Dr. Martin: You want to hate him because Art History II is the hardest class in the WORLD, but he is so cool it's hard to. If you have no life and can dedicate every waking hour to studying for this class, take it because it's fun. :-)

pay attention to his not in the book Picures. Passionate about art hard test teacher
incredibly hard; if you go to his office he will say "make flashcards as you go, take them w/you EVERYWHERE so every spare minute you can get them out and study, tape record every class - play it while you sleep every night!"
Unless your major requires one of his classes, avoid this teacher at all cost. Incredibly difficult tests.
Very Difficult class...If you dont study. very passionate about Art History and willing to help you as long as you ask. He likes when you stop by just to chat. This class challenges you but can be rewarding.
Do NOT take this class unless it is absolutely required for your major. It is incredibly difficult and he will tell you that the first day. He said: "If you made the 1st mistake of taking my class, don't make the 2nd of not reading."
it's argued that his class is one of the hardest offered at UCF. I believe it! 100's of images to be memorized, this is not a class for slackers. So much studying needed - talks super fast so it's hard to take notes in class. Phew!
if you have taken arh 2050 with gonzalez, expect the same amount of studying. he makes it interesting tho. he is def less scary than the beast who teaches art history I
Class attendance is a must. Many test questions are from class notes. Martin is a nice guy, and very willing to assist students outside of class.
I love Dr. Martin! Yes, he is very tough, but he's not tricky. Study your butt off and you will do good. I did, I got an A, so it can be done. Also, he's friends with R. Crumb, how cool is that?!
Nice guy, talks mile a min.,willing to help; tests R difficult(25 slide Qs & 25 mult. choice Qs, but he doesn't try to trick you like Gonzo. does;NO EXTRA CREDIT offered so if U don't need this class,DON't take it;attend class, study notes, pray~ u'll need i
best teacher EVER.
A course to weed out freshmen, Martin is a horrendous teacher for an intro class. Buddy up to him and he might find it in his heart to give you a point or two. I suggest taking this class later in your art education. It's insanely difficult.
I love Dr. Martin! He is difficult, but he's amazingly brilliant and conveys it really well. He's also an extremely different professor in huge intro classes then in his smaller specialized classes. He really likes to get to know his students, so he's more personable with the smaller ones.
Very nice guy, tests are hard and talks very fast. It might be a good idea to invest in a tape recorder.
I love Dr. Martin. His tests are hard, but he is always there to help you. Very generous with extra credits. Knows more about arh than anybodyelse in that department. Simple man, good sense of humos, always in a good mood.
Dr. Martin was VERY helpful! Go to his office hours!!! He's fun to talk to if nothing else. The tests are challenging and attendance is mandantory. Class isn't completely boring though, he has fun stories and jokes, as well as good art (obviously)
Horrible class, he seems to be pleased with the more people who fail his classes. He's a nice guy, but shouldn't be teaching considering he seems to find pleasure in failing students, in fact he said so the first day of class
He tries to scare you at first so you don't think he's a pushover, but he's really a pushover. Especially if he gets to know you he's helpful and more lenient on certain things, like if you're a couple points shy of a higher grade. The class is still hard though, and requires a lot of effort.
A very hard class if you do not study. But if you do put out the effort it is not too hard(NOt easy though). Martin is a really nice guy and does try to help you IF you ask for it.
EVIL MAN, but interesting class. Tests are very very hard, expect staying up all night.
very good teacher and person. take his class to learn. I liked it so much I took it twice! Well, that and I got a D the first time around. My fault entirely though. just study your ass off and attend class. I wound up with a B no problem
Dr. Martin is my favorite Art History professor! He is a very intelligent man but will admit when he's wrong/doesn't know something. Make sure you write down everything he says "Now make a note..." before! And don't miss class at all. Don't take his class unless you love art history!
He is a very nice and helpful man! Go to his office hours! His tests are very hard and you have to study for them forever! Don't take this class unless you love Art History, otherwise he is awesome and I will definately take more classes that he teaches!
This is one of the greatest teachers ever! Test are somewhat difficult but if you ask questions you will be fine...The biggest mistake to make is to think this is a BS class-IT ISNT be prepared to work.
A true scholar and a gentleman. Art history is not an easy class, you have to memorize a lot of paintings and sculptures, but when you need him he is there for you. Two years after I dropped of college I went to see him and he gave me the courage to return to college and finish my degree. Today I have my B.A. in sociology, thank you Prof. Martin.
This class is hard, but if you keep organized and pay attention you will learn a lot from the Marquis de Sade of the art department. Martin ROCKS. He is very helpful and quite amusing.
Sadist for sure. Not a class to take if you have any issues memorizing endless (and quite useless) facts, as that is the ONLY way to pass his test. Yes he's willing to help, and blah blah blah. But if you're looking for nothing lower than an A in a class, you better not take any other class that requires use of your brain in the same semester.
When he says, "you might see this on the test," or, "make a note .." then for the love of god WRITE IT DOWN! This was the hardest class I took last semester but I learned and retained the most from his class. Got a C but I regret nothing! He is a wealth of information and I wish I could sit in for another semester just to listen!
extremely hard tests! be ready to study 100-150 slides with 4 things to memorize EACH!!! very nice man, but 1/2 my class was retaking and i failed also! be ready to devote almost all your time to this class.
Majored in art history because of this man. Because I love him, I'm going to give him a chili pepper. One the best profs I ever had.
be prepared to study like mad! If you dont you'll do horrible. Go to the lectures, he practically says all the test questions
hes a very good teacher. he's hard tho. you HAVE TO go to every class or you'll do terrible on the test. memorize memorize MEMORIZE!! and when he says make a note or i can see it on your test WRITE IT DOWN! otherwise hes very help. and hes funny. make sure you like dogs!
He's good with the lectures. Attend them all. He's bad with helping people. As far as I can tell, he only intimidates you by telling you everything you ever did wrong. You might want to take this class at a community college.
Fantastic teacher, hard tests (don't miss class!). He's a great guy. He was a looker in his day ;)
Awesome teacher!! You must show up for class, take notes, get a voice recorder, and read read read the text. He is extremely helpful and knows his stuff. He is the reason I am an art education major!
he's great. make sure to go to all the lectures and memorize the material. this class requires alot of study time.
Do NOT miss class, your grade will suffer unless you know someone who takes good notes. Anytime he says "make a note" or "keep in mind" write it down. Tests are very detailed, he enjoys the fact that he makes it hard.
I'm sure he's a great professor if your major is art or art history, but I went in casually to take it as a general ed. because I liked art. DON'T DO THIS, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. He's tough, his class is annoying, he has like 500+ slides, and most of his test is opinions of artists that aren't even in the book. Do yourself a favor, don't take it.
Face it, no matter what art history class you take at UCF it will have a lot of slides & info to remember. The difference is, Martin gives you a study guide, the tests are multiple choice and even the option to write an EC research paper. You'll still work for an A, but not nearly as hard as you would for the other art history professors at UCF
Really fun guy but tests are difficult and there is alot of information to memorize. My advice is don't miss class! Ever! and get Sherlock notes if they are available for your class. They are helpful and renforce what you listen to in the lecture. Also bring a tape recorder so you don't miss something b/c he goes fast!
Martin and Zaho are an early morning tag team of art history! They both yelled at me for taking both their art history classes in the same semester. Rightly so but the good thing was that despite art history being such an overwhelming subject of study, Martin made it easy with his lecture style. Especially points out what you need to take note of.
He encourages attendance and coming in during office hours for questions/grades/help. Class required a lot of memorization, but after the first test, you'll know what to study for. Get a tape recorder, it helps a lot. Class isn't easy, but it's a requirement for most art majors.
Dr. Martin is a very interesting guy. There's a lot of material and he talks like an auctioneer to get through it all (some exaggeration). He doesn't repeat himself, SO RECORD HIS LECTURES (he encourages it). Also, he pretty much tells you what will be on the test, you just have to train your ear--he'll generally say, "make this note."
Prof. Martin was not easy, infact I would not recommend him to anyone. I took Art His II simply because I wanted to, I'm an Engineering major with a minor passion for history. Basically, if your stubborn enough to say forget your advice, im taking this class, this is the perfect class for you. hint, use the books in the library he provides
Really good and interesting lectures. But his tests are still hard, if you have problems memorizing dozens of dates and names. Recommended if you're really hardcore about art history.
Don't take this class unless you absolutely have to. If you've taken Zaho's Art History I class, Art History II with Martin is completely different. The material he has you memorize is completely different and he will not repeat anything he says or slow down when talking. Again, don't take this class.
Memorize over 40+ pictures, periods, styles and artists for 1 TESTx4. 25 pictures, 25 knowledgeable questions on or about the time or artists. [Make a note] helps, but it won't save you if you don't study. STUDY LIKE IT'S THE ONLY CLASS YOU TAKING or you'll barely get by with a decent grade. This is the very first class have failed! And I study TOO
great instructor ...a wealth of information. Just read the material and show up for notes.
don't take if you don't have to. Prepare to study ALL night long. He is very pretentious and states his opinions as facts, but if you don't mind memorizing and regurgitating information, this class is decent.
Class is absurdly difficult. Tons of images, tons of information, all exam grades count. He doesn't review, go over, or slow down. I didn't get the textbook (I'm cheap) and regretted it. TAKE NOTES. STUDY HARD. This is the only class I've ever studied for and still struggled. Besides that, Martin is awesome, funny, an art genius. Great teacher.
Dr. Martin is one of the reasons I am studying art history. He is funny and knowledgeable. His classes aren't easy, it's a lot of memorization, so don't assume you'll get an easy A. Use a tape recorder, it'll help alot. He basically tells you what is on the test, just listen. Flashcards and listening to lectures before tests have given me A's.
He's brilliant, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable. And after having taken him for 3 years, I think he's actually getting a little softer, in terms of telling you exactly what's on the test. Just make sure you come to class. It's a lot of info to memorize, but so is ANY art history class. Prof. Zaho's tests are a lot more difficult!
Dr. Martin is amazing! He is inspirational and has worked with many great artists. His lectures are intense, and he tries to be tricky on his tests, but if you know the information backwards (which you should for art history anyhow) and forwards, you can ace the class.
I have taken every class this man offers minus history of illustration because he is that good. I only study the night before the test and have always gotten an A. Do the extra credit paper even if you don't think you need it. You will learn so much and you won't realize it till you've graduated. Then go back in and thank him.
dr. martin is awesome as a person but his classes are pretty difficult. i got my first C in this class. massive amounts of studying required and class attendance is mandatory. listen for "this sounds like a test question" and "for your notes"..those are always on the tests.
If you don't memorize information well don't take this class. The tests are based on memorizing everything that he says in his lectures and minute information is put on the test-stuff that you wouldn't even think you should know. funny professor, hard test.
If your not a GENIUS at memorizing, I would not recommend this class (75 slides on tests out of 700). and to debate what other students said, he DOES NOT always put his "make a note of this" or even "This will be on the test" on the test. Very frustrating and discouraging. Other than that he is personable and great to talk to and listen to.
Dr. Martin is very smart. But I don't think he wants you to know that for his own cunning motives. I've been in three of his classes so far and they've all been difficult to varying degrees. Memorization is absolutely key, but understand that things he tells you to note are pieces of a puzzle that he assembles into a question or two for the test.
He does not lay out the information for you. He tests come from his lectures and the book. I attended class every day, wrote down every word he said, studied for hours, and only got a B. Expect to put a lot of time in and not get an A. He was very brash with his students. Don't expect much help if you have questions.
Dr. Martin is incredibly smart and knows his stuff. LOTS of notes. He gives clues as to what is on the test, but the tests are ridiculously detailed. U need to know more about the artists' lives than the actual paintng. 3 tests ONLY. Hours of crazy memorizing. Gives FREE answers in the few mins b4 tests start. Nice prof, funny. I pulled off a B.
I've taken Dr. Martin now for 4 different classes (Art Hist. 2, American Art, Hist. of Prints, and 19th Century Art). I'm not going to lie...his tests are tough, but if you go to class every day, take good notes and put a lot of studying in, you will get a good grade. Definitely an A+ teacher in my book.
Bottom line, I really enjoyed his class. He is very knowledgeable, and passionate about the material. If you want an A, go to every lecture, tape it, and pull all information that he says is on the test. Study and know it with the images! Also good idea to review the tests with him. He is there and willing to help!!!
Professor Martin is a very nice and fun guy to talk to, but believes that you need to work for your grade, which explains why his class is so difficult. You need to study a lot, go to every lecture, pay attention and be on top of the material. MUST study CONSTANTLY through the semester or you WILL fall behind and be screwed.
I have had Dr. Martin for 4 different art history classes and I adore him. He is a very interesting and funny professor. You MUST go to every class, all exam questions are from his lectures. His texts are tricky and you really need to study your ass off, but you'll leave with a vast knowledge of that art period. If you want to know art take Martin.
MY FAVORITE professor! Class is hard, but if you take WORD FOR WORD'ish notes, and study KEEP IN MIND statments, you'll do fine!
I LOVED this course. The material is really interesting and Dr. Martin is wonderful! I got notes from a friend who had already taken the course which made it so I could actually listen to the material instead of trying to scribble everything down [he talks VERY FAST]. Study the "make a note of..." moments and you'll be solid.
Dr. Martin is a cool guy. Very straightforward. If he says "write this down, this is going to be on the test" for the love of god, write it down! Can be a little forgetful, but he knows his stuff, don't be afraid to get to know him, go to office hours, etc. study the images and you will be fine. There are only like 4 tests, make them count!
Very knowledgeable! This guy knows his stuff and he knows how to make it interesting! Attend EVERY class and take good notes! When he says, "make a note," or "this sounds like a test question"...WRITE IT DOWN! He has accomplished alot in his life and he is a joy to have as a professor.
I'm currently taking this class a second time because I failed the first time around. Pulling an all-nighter for the test won't work. You need to keep up with the material, take notes (especially when he says "keep in mind" &etc.), and find a way to study the images. He's very nice in office hours&helpful, and cares about how you're doing.
I LOVE THIS MAN. Although, his tests are hard...he makes knowing what exactly will be on the test very easy. Here is what you need to know: GO TO EVERY CLASS. Do not skip any classes. When he says "for your notes" it WILL be a test question. 20 images&30 q's to a test.Go to his office hours, he is very easy to talk to!
Show him you're willing to work hard, it makes a difference. He's willing to help, but not during class (only before/after & office hrs). A little disorganized (syllabus outdated & didn't match the chapters in the book). Can be unnecessarily rude sometimes. Won't take him again unless necessary. Keep up on the info and you'll survive.
Professor Martin is by far my favorite instructor at UCF. The passion he has for art history will trickle down to you if you pay attention and go to every class. DO NOT SKIP. If he says "make a note" or puts emphasis on an important fact, write it down. It will be on the test. Highlight these points in your notes when you study. I recommend highly
Very helpful. Although I found him to be very rude at times, he knows a plethora of information about art history and doesn't shy from passing it over. Work hard and you'll do fine.
Great professor one of the best I have had at UCF class is not that hard as long you attend every lecture and keep up with the slides on a eekly basis. Really gets to know his students in a class of over 200 he knows most peoples names really passoinate about his subject and it rubs off i highly recomend this class
Go to class and take notes. If you don't study you will fail the tests because he covers a HUGE amount of information for each test. You really have to devote a good chunk of time to this class. I wouldn't recommend asking questions in class because he can be rude.
Professor Martin is awesome! I just started this course and love his lectures, he keeps the interest level high. He is always helpful, just ask all your questions in his office. I haven't taken an exam yet, but all three are multiple choice. Just go to class, write down key information along with "keep in mind" and "for your notes".
covers too much material and takes test questions from obscure points
Dr. Martin is one of the best professors at UCF. His lectures are intellectually stimulating and covers everything you'll need to know for the tests. There are three tests, all of which are easy as long as you know the material. To do great in this class you need to study on a regular basis, it's the only way otherwise the tests will be hard.
Covers HUGE amounts of information for tests, so be ready to devote a lot of time to studying if you want to do well. I didn't care for his type of humor and he was snippy at people who asked questions during class. Because it was such a massive amount of information, I don't feel like I actually learned much in this class that will stick.
Enthusiastic professor and interesting to listen to, but covers too much information in too short a period of time. Only 4 exams, none of which are easy. Best way to go about them is to memorize the image list and study the points he says to "make a note" of. Don't waste money on the books, just take/get notes and go to his office hours.
Although failing this class, which was my own fault for personal reasons, Dr. Martin is one of the greatest professors at UCF. His lectures are filled with information and knowledge. You MUST pay attention to what he is saying in order to pass. He also has certain phrases that will let you know that that specific point her made is important.
This class was definitely challenging but doable. Dr Martin lectures at a fast pace but lets students record the lecture. Write down his "make a note of," "this will be on the test," and "keep in mind" points. Just memorize the images and don't buy the textbook. Go to class and get the right images. Start studying ASAP. I ended up with an A.
Always write down and highlight the "keep in minds" and "on your test" segments of notes, for these are half of your test questions. I never went to his office, but he seemed to adore those who did. We covered interesting material, however because the lectures was so fast paced it was impossible to really appreciate the art.
Dr. Martin is awesome! He truly cares about the success of all his students. All you need to do is go to every class, take good notes, study daily and you'll do great. If you want a good grade, you have to put in the effort there is no other way around it.
Be prepared to devote all your time to studying this one class. Your only assignments are four tests. If you bomb one, prepare to deal with a bad grade for the whole semester. Some of the questions on the tests are brutal, like giving two similar dates (1942 or 1949) and asking which one is correct. Too much material to cover for four whole tests.
Some of the hardest tests I have ever taken. I love art history. When I took this class I was a Digital Media major. I loved Art History 1 and got an A. But this class was the first class I almost failed in college. Something about his tests was just so unreasonably difficult. And if you do badly on one test that's it because there are few grades.
Dr. Martin is my favorite professor Ive ever had and his class was hard, due to the unavoidable memorization, but he made it fun and rewarding. I loved his class so much I took every art history class he offered. I highly recommend him!! I am so happy he is still around! Take advantage of the opportunity to learn from him while you can!
