Sheehan is a great Chemistry teacher...especially at John Jay, where Dr. Berger is the Science Chair. BEWARE! Berger is an absolutely TERRIBLE teacher! There is a reason why Sheehan's class fills up so fast- everyone knows SHEEHAN ROCKS! But Berger seriously needs to be forced into retirement.
Professor Sheehan is the best professor John Jay has. If you find yourself in one of his classes consider yourself lucky. He's a great guy, and a really down to earth personality with a terrific sense of humor. The perfect professor in my book!
AWESOME I left JJ to teach b/c he made me love chemistry Great person! Administration should let him make improvements. Cares about stdt success, teaches an awesome lab instills students with good ethics and emphasizes accuracy and precision.Cares about safety/SCHOOL DOES NOT. Beware of John Jay Labs, very unsafe.Be patient like to exp labs alot.
I was so glad I took Sheehan this semester. He's pretty awesome. His teaching style is just so much more effective. Plus I still remember how he met with me & gave me a tour even when the school was closed for spring break. There's a reason why I did tremendously better this semester. BETTER TEACHER! (anyone is better than BERGER).
Professor Sheehan is the most amazing professor I've ever had. His sense of humor brings the classes to life. The man has a gift for teaching. Any student is lucky to have him for class.

He really knows what he is talking about. The material may be difficult at times, but as long as you put your time into it, its not too bad. He is the best professor for General Chemistry.

He's a good teacher. The only things are that sometimes he's hard to hear and writes too lightly on the board.
He's a good teacher. This is definitly one of those classes where you have to study. Dosen't give a curve in his class.
best gen chem professor u can get..very helpful..explains clearly..fun professor..gives handouts to make up for not writing on the board
Excellent, excellent teacher. Taking general chemistry with Professor Sheehan is the best thing you could possibly do at John Jay. And if you're lucky and he's teaching lab, make sure to sign up for that section. You'll learn EVERYTHING you need to know to be able to move on successfully in the forensic science program. He's also hilarious.
Uses handouts to teach which become VERY helpful come exam time. The best chem prof to take at JJ, not neccessarly beacuse he's that good but rather because everyone one else that teaches chem at JJ SUCKS
brilliant professor. gives hands out that are really helpful. very knowledgable in his field..friendly..fun..u will love this professor. i got an A in the class without even trying
He's a great professor. If you have a question he'll be more than happy to explain it for you. He hands out sheets with notes for Chem 104 that are extremely helpful. He tries to makes jokes, not so funny, but at least he's trying. Definately take him if you can.
Great Teacher!!! I had him for chem 103 and 104. You should take him he is really good and is extremely knowledgeable besides there aren't any better profs. for the subject. I would take him for any other chem class but hes not teaching them. BOOOO! Class isn't that difficult and he tries to make it as interesting as possible.
great professor!!! He makes the work easy and gives out handouts. also holds study groups before exams.
Amazing professor. If only he could teach every science class!!
If any of you out there are looking to teach YOURSELF an entire chemistry course, this in the one for you. Sheehan does not care whether or not you understand the lectures. He simply tells you where the room for tutoring is and moves right along. He also tells alot of corny jokes! I would go on but i can only type 350 characters. Hope this helps.
I don't know what the last person was talking about. Apparently they can't read the text book or follow along with notes. Professor Sheehan is awesome. He's really helpful and explains everything. And only if you really don't get something does he send you to tutoring. SERIOUSLY, LEARN TO FREAKIN READ THE BOOK AND TAKE NOTES.
Good guy, but i wish he can go over more topics. He only goes over some stuff and just touchs briefly on them. Wished he could have spent more time on the hard stuff, and made it more clearier. He is funny though, and down to earth. I recommend only if youre willing to study alot. If youre like me and are lazy, you might want to search for another.
he is a nice cool guy, but he just doesnt explain the topics well. basically he just goes over what your going to have to teach yourself at home or whatever. he jokes around alot, which is cool, but he could be using that time to make the class understand what their doing. its not an easy subject. wish their were better chem professors @ jjay !
He is an easy professor, all the notes and all his lessons are very useful, i had him for 103 and 104 and he is very clear. If you have the opportunity to take him, do ir because he is fun.
he takes time to really go over the material. he makes sure everyone participates and understands the work. he is the head of the chemistry department, so he makes the tests so he goes over the information that is on the test so it is easy to get good grades. make sure you go to class and do the OWL homework and you'll do just fine!
He is one of the best professors of chem I have ever known. When you try to fall asleep on his lectures, he starts joking around so you keep up with what he is saying. He can go over the material you dont understand for hours so by the end youll get it!!!!
he was great lecture professor really funny. he had handouts for all his notes and explains anything if you ask him.
This professor does not go through it thoroughly and his tests are extremely hard. It's like he does it on purpose. I would take it with another professor.
He is the most boring monotoned and unclear professor I had. His exams are no joke. If your able to stay up during boring things by all kea stake his class.
Sheehan is the man. He's a really good chemistry teacher, and he's a funny guy. If your into chemistry, this is the professor for you. If your not a chemistry person, his humor makes up for it
I LOVE this man. Even though he does sometimes stray off the topic, he really knows his stuff and explains it the best way he can. He also makes tons of corny jokes that are pretty funny. However, don't expect him to go over everything in class. Sometimes you have to write your own notes and do some extra reading. This is college folks!
He is clearly a very good teacher. The course is doable but you must commit. Most topics on tests are covered in lecture or recitation. My only complaint is that we blasted through the material on the final exam in 1.5 weeks and it counts for 40% of your final grade. I would have gotten an A if this material had been covered more thoroughly.
The worst I've had at John jay I couldn't comprehend his lessons thank god for recitation
Awesome Professor is awesome! Very funny, very clear, very friendly. He knows what he's talking about and explains very well. If you know your chemistry, this is a great Professor to take.
He's the worst chemistry teacher I've ever had. I'm a straight A student and I could barely understand anything. I had to teach myself. He doesn't care if you understand and gives you an attitude when you ask questions. His jokes aren't funny and he strays completely off topic. I'm extremely disappointed in his class and dont recommend it to anyone
He is a great professor. His jokes are pretty funny and he is always in a good mood. He runs through topics rather quickly but he gives printed out lecture notes for everyone in the class so that you can review them both in class and at your own time. Within the notes everything is gone through step by step so you're always set to go.
Professor Sheehan is a really nice guy. His classes are usually funny, and he knows what he is talking about. However, it seems a lot of the tims he gets off topic, and also takes a long time to get through topics, which leaves you cramming before the test. Also NEVER fall asleep in his class, or use laptops because he will embarrass you.
Great professor. He may get off topic, but you will learn what you need to. Take his course
It seems that everyone I've ever spoken with that had something negative to say about this professor are the ones that don't do their own reading or take their own notes but expect to come to class having their professors explain every tiny detail at the slowest pace. He may not be the best professor in the department but he's definitely effficient
Just graduated.Hes a good professor and loves chemistry. Take your own notes, study study study and you'll sneak through
Great professor!
He's a great professor. He knows what he is talking about and he explains it well. The tests are fair, and easy if you study. His jokes are so bad, they're funny. If you have the choice, definitely take him.
Great Professor who is passionate about chemistry. Read the chapter before class so it will be easier to follow lectures. Gives review sheets and goes over the exams with you . As long as you read and do a lot practice problems you should be okay for the exams.
I would not recommend taking this class. The only way you will be able to pass his class is if your are only taking this class and not working or volunteering or eating or breathing. You have to go to class then go home and read the book until you go back to class and in between that do all of your homework from lecture, recitation and lab
Pretty easy-going and he can teach really well. Tests aren't bad at all. All multiple choice. Homework is annoying. Sorry, but if you're in FOS and you're struggling with his class, you're not going to make it. This is coming from a current senior in the major. Everything you learn from this class will be repeated to you for the next three years.
I failed this class because I didn't know what to expect. He also tends to take his time with the chapters, falling way behind schedule. The homeworks are hard and take FOREVER to do. I would rather not take his class, but if you do have him, he's a nice guy and will definitely help you.
I generally do respect and enjoy most of my professors, but Sheehan is the exception. He wastes an enormous amount of class time babbling about things not related to the subject, his lectors are incredibly boring, we never finished all the materials needed for any of the tests, and all in all he just does not explain chemistry very well.
He is ok professor , his exams are hard. It's too bad that john jay has only one professor for Chem 103 & 104. It's hard to pass his class. I failed his exams so I withdrawal and took the same class to another CUNY school . Do not take him . His class will lower your GPA.
Too bad that I took his class and I didn't pass it. Try to take another professor if you have a choice. Too much extra work for his class and exams are totally different from his lectures and home work.
It's not easy to pass his class. Do not take him if you want to pass chemistry in good grades.
Really nice guy, always willing to help students. He is extremely passionate about teaching, he is always in a good mood! However, he doesn't explain things very well. You're going to have to read most of the chapter on your own not cus he doesnt go over it, but cus there's not enough time for him to explain very clearly. there is a lot of hw
This class was a mistake. Sheehan never finishes going over the material for the test and he never explains the material. The homework takes too long and will stress you out, but it's not like you'll ever finish it by the deadline. But don't worry, he drops a test, as if it really helps.
Taking him for CHE 103, if you actually study like he motivates people to do ALL THE TIME, you WILL pass. Never got anything less than a 95, but then again its just Gen chem 1, and I LOVE chem. TAKE HIM!
If there was another professor option for CHEM 103 i would take that professor.. but sadly there are no other options. his lectures are him reading off the slides and making a corny joke every so often. his tests DO NOT go with what you do in recitation or lab. its AN EXTREMELY HARD CLASS. he doesn't help you pass. I had a breakdown and took the F.
If you're extremely good at chemistry take him if not don't even bother! He makes things 100 times harder and his lectures are long and boring you basically have to learn on your own from the book! A lot of hw that stresses you which is due right before the exams but is good practice! He's a nice person but he will fail you if you fail exams!
To do well, motivation and passion for sciences helps. Use the MSRC tutors. Professor Sheehan's lectures are clear, though he runs out of time and misses covering a lot of material. Concepts and math seem easy, but PRACTICE is essential. Exams are tough, but doable. HW is time consuming, but good practice. Kind and funny professor. I learned a lot.
He is fun, easy and helpful if you pay attention to the lecture and study hard after school. If not, don't take this class because it's extremely hard. He is easy but the class is not. You have to do the HW, it's mandatory for Chemistry course but it's very long. If you have any problems, just email him he is there for you. Very helpful.
It was basically the worst decision of my life. DO NOT take this class unless u absolutely MUST. its more of a rating for the course. its ridiculously HARD. like wtf man, its almost impossible to pass... Sheehan reads off slides, tries to explain the concept but its too much stuff in too little time. tests dont go with what is given in RECLABLEC
Sheehan was great. For the amount of information given, he explains it as well as possible but recitation helps a lot. The exams are all multiple choice and on what he teaches. If you pay attention and study, you'll do fine. The homeworks are brutal, but do-able. The people who say it's impossible to pass, I would say that's their fault, not his.
Literally reads off the slides, puts you to sleep. When you take the test its not the same as the material as the homework, nor in the textbook. It is two totally separate things. DO NOT TAKE unless your amazing at chem and can study. Doesnt give extra credit to help students, who did not get decent grades on test because he tries to be fair.
Too much homework, tests are tricky, goes through slides too fast, lots of self teaching
Prof. Sheehan is like one of those teachers that secretly wants his students to fail. He makes things unnecessarily difficult and doesn't give help. If you were to ask him a question he'd say "you're supposed to know that". He runs through the slides way too quick, gives a ton of useless HW, doesn't review for tests, and his jokes are NOT FUNNY
Really boring, you have to teach yourself and practice a lot but I end up getting an unsatisfied grade since some questions on the tests are tricky for no reason. Seriously, some questions are just too hard and unexpected. Why is he teaching in JOHN JAY?
Nice guy but dont take his class if you have a hard time learning
Sheehan isn't that bad as a teacher, it's the subject that he teaches that is incredibly hard. For any Chem class, be ready to put in long hours outside of class to get a good grade. Whenever he says he will do something in a day, give him 3 days to do it. Be prepared for lots of dad jokes!! Don't be scared of him, if you have a question just ask.
I like professor Sheehan, despite the lack of effort he puts into his classes. His class is straightforward, do your homework on time, do readings and do A LOT of outside studying. He does what he can with the small times allowed for lecture, but he does waste a lot of time talking, and is very boring lecturing. To his defense, thats chemistry.
sheehan is super funny and a great person but needs to slow down. dont be afraid to ask questions (even about grades or correcting him)
I took this class over the summer last year and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. Sheehan knows his stuff, but expects you to know it too. He gives mountains of homework that aren't helpful, his lectures are long and boring, and his tests are very tricky. He puts a lot of exceptions and expects you to know everything in the textbook.
Very sweet and caring teacher, you need to do your online homework but if you pace yourself its really not that bad. He probably makes a joke at least once every class so he lightens the mood. Fair grader as well!
Professor Sheehan isnt a bag guy, but also isnt a great professor. This class is extremely hard.. failed it 3 times. The homework is LONG, hundreds of questions, which is be overbearing. This class is a lot of work, so only take it if its mandatory. The lectures are boring, so study before he teaches. I changed my entire major after failing so much
Professor Sheehan is a nice person but his exams are very tricky. His lectures are just him reading off of the slides. The mastering chemistry homeworks are super long and they do not help.
He is a nice guy and is funny at times. He is a great professor. He grades very fairly and tries to help kids pass. His test can be hard if you dont study or pay attention. But if you do everything youre suppose to do, the tests are easy to pass. He gives you printed slides and they are super helpful. Just by studying them you can pass the tests.
He's a nice guy and is funny at times but if you don't teach yourself or go to tutoring you won't pass the class. He reads off his power-point and has you fill in some blank spaces. You do have the opportunity to drop one test grade and you take a total of 4 exams but can't drop the 4th test grade. All I have to say is, good luck.
You have to go to class, he is very strict about that. He tries to help the students with 2 funny questions in the exam, but it doesn't help at all. He is nice but I hadn't learn anything in his class.
this class stressed me out and I'm stuck with him again for 104 in which he said is going to be harder. I got a C+ and I worked hard for it! Could I have studied harder? of course but I have other classes! sad that I have to take chem cuz of my major but at least I passed. you can too!! get ready to teach yourself and study hard! good luck!!
A professor who knows his stuff! Very well informed and his lectures are full of information! But the homework material isn't very helpful despite being told the homework is the key to success!
Now I took this professor all of gen chem and he's respected, knowledgable, and makes you work for it. He does have his favorites though, so if you're struggling don't expect to get off on the right foot with him even if you show you're working hard. just, good luck.
4 tests to determine if you pass or fail. Be prepared to teach yourself. You have 1 test to drop but if you mess up twice you will not receive anything above a C. Grading combined with Lab/Recitation make this your most dreadful class to go to 3 times a week with your other chem requirements.
Professor Sheehan is a wonderful person and professor. For anyone complaining that the class is too difficult - all it takes to succeed in this class is to actually put in the effort and study. The exams are NOT difficult, so if you actually do the work required to succeed you will do well. He's very fair and he wants everyone to do well.
Sheehan is a decent professor. This is not a class where you can put minimal effort in(obviously), but it does require a lot of your time(heavy workload, lots of studying), esp. if you already struggle with chemistry. I didn't find the lectures helpful, so I taught myself most of the material. Be prepared to prioritize this class over others.
Good luck to class moving online in the fall, he is a disaster. Makes you feel like you're doing everything wrong in the class. Has lab instructors grade you poorly as well even if you are doing well because he is in charge of the grading. Cannot escape him as he only teaches 104. If you are not on the screen he kicks you out or calls on you.
I took this class in Spring 2020 so I got to experience Sheehan with in-person and online classes. He always provides the notes in every class that you review during the lecture. He goes over tricky subject material and is overall a decent professor. Read the textbook! This is vital for the exams. He always talked to us after classes, a nice guy.
He was such a mess and beyond inconsiderate of everyone's time for the fall. There were times where he would send the meeting link at 1 or 2 A.M. He would always read off his slides and never provided anything beyond that. Honestly if you have the option to have a different professor do it.
Took him in Fall 2019. Horrible experience because I didn't try as hard as I could've but his lecture is reading off of uninformative slides with a system where a random person's ID comes on the projector as a means to call on people. Performance factor deducts from your total possible exam grade, horrible grading system. Avoid him if you can.
One of the worst professors I've come across in undergrad. His teaching style is similar to that of HS genchem, cold calling, snarky remarks, and microaggressions when anyone asks for help. I did well in 103-104 by just self-teaching and ignoring his unprofessional comments. Unfortunately, the gen ed chem classes are dictated by him so no options.
Professor Sheehan is not a good professor. His bad teaching style made it hard to do well in the course. His lectures were unorganized and he would also get annoyed and sarcastic towards students if they were having trouble or confused. Also he wastes a good portion of the lecture talking about things unrelated to chemistry.
I took him for Fall 2021 and hes probably one of the worst professors Ive had. Hes rude, not helpful at all, and his online testing set up is awful! Stay away from him.
One of the worst professors at JJ. Insisted everyone had their camera on and marked a student absent who had their camera off because he was in the bathroom. Sheehan really made the kid turn his camera on while sitting on the toilet.
Everyday at 8am I wanted to rip my eyes out. Our cameras had to be on, he would read over the slides and explain poorly. He would say in recitation we would go over this but we went over something else. Homework is heavy. His test setup was worse, and invasion of privacy. He would spend 1 hour on the setup. Cant miss class and get ready for sarcasm
He seems like a nice guy but is not great at explaining the concepts. Take this class if you are already a strong chem student and have the ability to understand everything on your own. The lecture/exam zoom links were sent past 2 am the night before but preregistration was required. Also waited over 10 days for most exam grades to be posted.
Hilarious upsetting how he is still a professor at John jay. Super upsetting how they dont find a replacement. To improve the chemistry department they need to get rid of this guy.
If you're someone who learns by having a powerpoint read to you for 3 hours straight, this is the class for you. Camera is required at all times or he will mark you absent. At home testing setup is crazy. The tests were also quite difficult for me because I am not someone who can memorize. Exam grades take 1-2 weeks to get back which is frustrating
I think that the lectures were alright, because Sheehan was willing to stop and answer questions wherever needed. But whenever he communicates with students, it feels like a long list of what students do wrong rather than what they have done well. Makes him come off as an overall grumpy man. Based on his communication with us, very pessimistic.
The PowerPoint is read to you for the 3 hour lecture. Concepts arent explained very well, doesnt answer questions without ridiculing you, takes forever to post test and final grades. He also often goes off on tangents and wastes your time. Cameras are required for class and the online exam set up is insane and you lose an hour on your exams.
lectures are not good. they're packed with info in a way thats really hard to understand. cold calls on students. cant avoid him because hes the only one teaching the section. very strict with attendance, dont even be a minute late. will drone on and on, sometimes going over time or almost forgetting to give a break. overall, too much.
Took his che104. This man is the sole reason I almost changed majors. He's the only chem prof, so you can't avoid this disastrous course. He is condescending, does not explain anything clearly, and brags about students dropping his class. Read the textbook, get tutoring and truly hone your self-control. All I can say is good luck my friend...
Just ok. Class was very difficult in the first place. Grading is mostly based on 4 exams though the lowest one is dropped. Exam set up was a huge pain. Was nice sometimes but can be disrespectful a lot to students. Attendance was mandatory as well as keeping your camera on. If you know chemistry very well, then you'll do fine in this class
Don't do it, just don't take the class. Switch Majors even, the credit is not worth the experience you have to go through to take this class.
I would not recommend it, you're going to rethink everything. I dropped this class because he barely taught during lectures, this class will make you rethink your whole major. I wish anybody taking this class or CHEM 104 a lot of luck. If you fail more than 2 of the 4 tests you basically fail the class. If I could give this class a 0 I would
Professor Sheehan is honestly ridiculous. This course was only online and if you're a STEM major, you'll have him again for CHE104. Good luck. He wants cameras on at all times and has multiple devices set up to make sure you're on video. Doesn't respect privacy and expects you to buy a tripod to set up for an exam. I dropped this course.
To be honest, don't take this course. However, if you are like me, a STEM major you will have to take him for 103 and 104. Cameras on at all times, no exceptions. Get ready to buy a tripod for his impossible exams where the class averages a 40%! He will randomly call on you to answer questions, if you don't know he shames you in front of everyone.
Got sick and failed me for not being able to attend lab over my sickness.
This professor caused me major depression, no kidding. He said in class he expected half of the class to fail, and if you do not want to fail his class and get an A you should study at least 15 hours per week outside of the homework (which takes you more than one hour to finish each assignment). Honestly, I am still traumatized when I hear his name
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY, YK UNLESS YOU WANT TO FAIL HAVE YOUR GPA TANK AND WANT TO BASH YOUR HEAD OVER WITH THE REQUIRED TRIPOD YOU NEED TO GET, EXAMS ARE HARD AND NOT IT, HE COLD CALLS AND DOES NOT CARE FOR YOU UNLESS YOU HAVE A PET IN VIEW WHERE HE WILL ASK YOU ABOUT IT FRO 2 MINUTES
Please don't take this professor. Unless you are a STEM major you would be required to since he's the only Professor for this course as well as other chemistry courses. Be expected to learn the material on your own by reading the textbook. He is rude and will definitely belittle you and make you feel as though you wont be successful in this course.
He was the only professor. He talks in a condescending tone and comes of as rude. He shames students for coming late or not knowing info when asked. The summer class is fast paced and it was horrible. The lectures have so much information. He goes past the ending time. Only 20 minutes of break all together were given for 4 hours of class. Hated it.
Class was extremely exhausting/too much to learn to shove into 8 weeks. Very condescending, overcomplicates explanations, and isn't the biggest help. Chem isnt easy but he makes it worse. So much homework, so much reading, if you don't study you won't pass. Only got 2 ten minute breaks in a 4 hour lecture. Annoying about cameras on/showing ur face.
Tough class with rigid requirements like mandatory camera use and tricky exams. Professor can be blunt, but lectures cover material well. unstuckstudy helped me stay on top of studying.
Get ready to teach yourself. If you have no prior knowledge of chemistry, you will suffer in this class. It is a very fast pace, and no extra credit is allowed. My advice is to do all of the homework and recitation assignments; that way, if you fall behind in lab, you still have credit to boost you. But still try to do every single assignment.
Mr sheehan isn't a good professor but he's not a horrible one and means well. His lectures can get very heavy but he will answer questions if asked. Its a hard class but just study as much as possible and you will do fine.
Valid professor, keep using the textbook and practice with the recitiation sheet. Ong we only get 20 mins break out of a 4 hour lecture. I had 10 minutes to take a shit and i couldnt find toilet papers so I had to rush to lecture. But class was valid I got a high grade. He is OG would recommend, no short cuts or handouts. RESPECT UNC!
Professor Sheehan is a good professor overall. He's fair in how he grades and is always willing to answer any questions you have. He runs his Zoom classes very much like an in-person class, so he does expect participation and will randomly call on students.I definitely recommend studying the textbook thoroughly and doing plenty of practice problems
Chemistry is going to be a difficult class if you only rely on given assignments and what you learn in class, which he emphasizes. Study, attend workshops, ask questions, take notes, etc. and you'll excel. There is A LOT of homework. I love his occasional jokes and he's a great professor. You're not going to like this class if you want an easy A.
he's a really understanding professor when it comes to personal situations but the teaching itself is just really mediocre. he reads straight from the slides itself without really giving outside knowledge for easier understanding. you'd need to teach yourself the material most of the time and the exams are basically suicide without acc dying
