lectures are long and boring, teaches well, but very hard marker

my opinions biased because i tried very hard & read lots
This guy is not fluent at all. A little personality would sure go a long way

Very nice man, willing to help outside of class time but a little boring and not very clear. For tests just memorize his notes word for word.
Really disliked the attendance rule(what is this high school?) and really annoying way of testing. just read the notes(if you can manage to get any) or read the text.
Nice teacher, provide all the reading materials for u, just need to make copies of the related topic for the test in advance and take notes...the test will be a piece of cake! Beware of the lab...it's tricky~
I have taken many classes at this school and he was the worse teacher. I don't recommend taking any of his classes. I didn't understand most of what he said. His lectures are so frustrating and he gives little help.
ok, you know what? this guy should NOT be a prof. He's boring, his notes suck, and it's impossible to pay attention during class....his laugh gets me going though ;o) if possible, DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS
A couple words for you----> no final!! just memorize his review sheet for the test and ur golden. notes suck, studders like the kid in billy maddison t t t today junior. ah di duh ummm. His laugh however is like a 12 year old girls. again no final
A very nice man who is willing to help students outside of class. However, his notes are simply just "headers"- they are topic names, not actual facts. Worked hard and passed his class easily.
He is a nice enough guy, but his notes are everywhere, he has no control of his class, and he takes forever to get his marks up.
This teacher is a joke. He doesn't even know what he's talking about and he's so boring it's impossible to pay attention in his class. He's hard to follow and he marks poorly.
This guy is from Hong Kong and has been teaching at camosun since 1989 and still has the HARSHEST accent, you have to REALLLLLLLLY listen to figure out what he is saying, and some words just dont make sense.. like loledge is knowledge duh ohhhh
Francis is super friendly; willing to help; ridiculously accomodating; labs fun and practical; excellent experience for those interested in human geography.
Unfair marker, and you can't understand a word this guys says. Makes it impossible to take decent notes. Class presentation is a joke in terms of how he marks. He takes marks off for not being able to understand you...what about him???
This class is a joke, he is very unclear. Lectures are EXtREMELY boring. His marking is ridiuclous, no matter how good of a student you are getting high marks on labs tests etc is hard because he takes full marks off for very MINOR mistakes. This teacher is a waste of time DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
He's nice, mostly helpful, and its not that hard to get a good mark if you make the effort. Apart from that, his class is a waste of time and money. He is hard to follow and I don't learn anything worthwhile. It's a snooze-fest and the only point of going to class is to get the attendance marks.
yee cannot speak the english language, is unable to explain any concepts without refering to china. yet still demands specifics on his tests.... boring incomprehesible stupid capricious and even spiteful, a tepid mass of oh um..... useded yes useded. do not take this class if u value marks or sanity
doesn't really know what he's talking about...I'd suggest he teach asian-pacific studies or something because the one subject he does have knowledge on is China...completely vague & unclear but expects very clear and specific answers on tests...labs just get annoying at the end..didnt learn anything
Yee has ruined any chance of me taking geography again. he butchers the english language with his accent. Cannot understand lectures, asking for help is useless as you cannot deceifer what he's saying. Don't take this class. It stinks
I found this class to be very frustrating! I was expecting to learn at that of a 200 level course, but found I learned most of the content he taught back in high school. He is extremly unclear with labs, and wasted alot of inclass time.
the course itself is very interesting, but not the way he presents it. he's pretty helpful if you have a question for him. basically you just have to read the text and do the lab, you'll do fine in the course, cuz his lectures aren't very good.
Textbook example of a prof. who doesn't care. Does not manage classtime well. Will not award top marks, period.
you're being harsh.you have to work to get marks in college.in this case, READ!Francis is difficult to understand b/c of his accent, but he is very helpul and always attempts to answers questions...some people see this as wasting time? His exams are fair, so be prepared! he'll help if u ask! Be kind!
His exams are only fair because he gives you a list of 20 things to study 4 of which will be tested on. He hands you the great mark. However manages to find something wrong with some answers even when they are completely memorized from book.. he is a brutal marker. and very unclear..AVOID HIM
Fantastic teacher if you know how to reasearch write and have some experience in economics.. he actually trys to raise awareness about current issues...one of my favorite classes.
I really liked this class but everything was due at once.. carefully plan ahead if you take this class.
He's not clear, and has very high expectations for a first year level course. Has an accent and say's "umm" or "ahh" 80 times in 20min Extremely hard marker on labs and he doesn't give much help to students with the labs. Our clas did very poor on two labs, both he would not provide much help with.

not a good prof! you can't understand him...the language barrier is a total problem
I fall asleep, zone out, and generally dislike this man's style of teaching. his use of language makes it difficult to learn and pay attention. i wouldn't take any of his classes in the future. sorry mr yee.
Umm. He. Ahh. was. Ahh. not. Umm. bad but. Ahh. he has. Umm. this. Ahh. weird. Umm. thing that he. Umm. does. Umm. when he. Ahh. talks!
This class, sucks! He is hard to understand, the class is boring, and he's a brutal marker. It's good that he gives us the test before hand, because other wise everyone would fail this class. It's hard to even do well on the tests, he ALWAYS manages to find something wrong even when it's right! One of the worst teachers I've had for sure!
Where to begin... let's just say I don't recommend this class. The only benefit of showing up is attendance marks. The lectures put me to sleep, and I basically learned the entire course from my textbook.
The class can be boring, but the marks are easy. He is hard to understand at times, but helpful when it is needed. It's nice to have the final a few weeks before classes are over (although you have a project to do) as it just gets the course out of the way!
impossible not to fall asleep
Although this prof claims to be able to speak English, he cannot. I'm sure in a social setting he's a nice dude but in the classroom...well.....'negative' is said 'lacatif'...language barrier is a big prob indeed
Where do I begin, he is the worst teacher I have ever met, its like having your intestines pulled out by wolves just hearing him speak. Losing interest during lectures is an understatement..This man does not belong in the classroom! Even if you love Geography, don't take this, avoid at all costs.. Run away Simba, run away and never return!
The language barrier renders this man completely worthless. All his labs are mere pointless busy work projects that dont involve actual learning. Do not take any of his classes.
Francis is really nice and helpful outside of class; however, within the classroom his teaching style can be a little frustrating and too vague. His accent is not that bad and it's unfair for people to criticize or judge his teaching ability on account of his accent. Canada is supposed to be multicultural after all!
very poot
not going to class is a better option here folks, expect to bring a translator with you if you go... also "umm eee dah" some of his classic lines
I have found his accent fine- if you actually pay attention to what he is saying. He provides pratical and useful tools for those looking for higher education. Unfortunately most people in his class are fresh out of high school and apparently have a low toleration for culture. hard to believe considering he teaches culture not just geography!!
It is impossible to get a decent grade on any assignment you do, not matter how much time you spend on it, it is never good enough. His exams are brutal, yes he does give you the questions that are on the exams but the material that is needed to know for each question is way too much work especially if you are taking other classes beside his. :(
he is great. I like this class. Not too hard to get good marks if u study.
he is terrible. avoid this class at all costs.
Francis was not my favorite instructor. Yes, he was a little difficult to understand. However, he was always more than willing to help any students that were having a hard time. I wouldn't consider him a bad instructor at all - just not exactly the best I've had.
It's very helpful class if you put your effort on it. you will get a good mark!
no too good speak english
he's a giver. if you ever need help. he's all for it. but it is a somewhat hard course.
OMG PLEASE AVOID HIM i went to every class pratically and could not understand anyting his tests are hard and he cannot explain anything! and hes a hard marker!!! drop the class if you ever have a class with him!
He is a great teacher. I think that people may get scared of his accent but overall it doesn't affect his ability to teach. Understanding and fair. Glad to be in his class again.
well whats left to say......same as everyone else...the guy is boring, unbelievable hard marker.....if your looking to keep your GPA up or trying to get into other schools don't take this class.......i made the mistake....now i'm funked.
memorize the text book, the concept is wrong unless its word for word out of it. he should not conflict economic geography with economics. Hard to understand, and likes to beat around the bush with answers.
Unfortunately it is pretty much impossible to stay awake during his lectures.
Francis is a great professor. He is helpful and enthusiastic if you take an interest in his class and relevant issues. He is also part of the African Awareness Committee and is really supportive of students who take the time to do well.
Funny guy with interesting experiences
This is post secondary, not high school. I took 7 courses while taking this one and still ended up with a high A. His exams are simple. He gives you notes. He gives you the exact question. No teacher outside of Camosun would do this. Those who cannot handle this course load should grow up/forget about trying on a real university: It's a lot harder.
Interesting material taught by a nice guy who obviously cares very much about what he's teaching, but the lectures are BRUTAL. Two hours of droning on and on with powerpoint. Also very unclear about assignment requirements.
AHHHHHHHHHH!!! Biggest waste of time ever. Can't give you a straight answer if you ask a question, easy material yet I learnt nothing..you could fit the content into a week if he could teach. Hes a nice guy but boring as hell. He heads the Africa Awareness group which is fantastic just avoid his classes. Easy "A", but not worth the torture.
Possibly the worst instructor I have ever had. Don't waste your time and money. He gives the questions that will be on the test so you can just google it and not go to class. Not hard but a big waste of time.
Great guy, not that good of a teacher. He can be hard to understand sometimes. Critical thinking isn't necessarily promoted in the class, just memorization of lectures.
I feel bad reading some of these comments about him. I hope he doesn't see them. He's a nice guy, although he can be really rude to someone if they're talking in class. He has a thick Chinese accent. I can understand him but others can't. The class is boring and you never get out early but it's school, so whatever. Also, he makes a lot of typos.
F. Yee is kind, patient, and understanding. However, I couldn't understand him (he is soft-spoken with a VERY thick accent. I was often unable to get a clear answer from him if I needed clarification on an assignment and his feedback on exams was not constructive. There was very little critical thinking and/or discussion; just memorizing slides.
Francis Yee is a really nice teacher. I didn't have a hard time understanding him once you are a week or two in. He knows his stuff very well, and I thought his feedback on questions during class was very good. His midterms are not hard, and his labs are not difficult either. Definitely not the worst teacher like some of the other posts say.
maybe doesn't have interesting lectures, but a good teacher in general, very well organized
Yee was a fantastic teacher. Extremely intelligent, very well traveled and knowledgable. A true humanitarian.
I took Francis's online Human Geography course. Francis is a very kind, helpful and patient man, and extremely intelligent and experienced. I liked his assignments and his tests, and when I fell behind because of work, he assisted me in getting back on track.
Yee is a great prof, but his lectures lack interest. Test and labs are easy, but he marked really hard on the final project. If you can stand to attend class he will hand out bonus marks. The textbook is a waste of time.
Francis is a great teacher & he's very nice. He uses power point & is well organized. Very helpful & clear. However, you must attend classes if you don't use or have the text book. He doesn't post his power points on D2L. Do lab assignments, study, do well for presentation & you will pass his course.
Very helpful!
Human geography with Yee was fun because I'm passionate about volunteer work and Yee did tons of that. However, the lecture was dull but he is such a kind-hearted man that it didn't matter. Make sure on exams such as essays that you explain what you mean in every unfamiliar word. Clarity is important! This man is involved with many humanity
Everything you need for this class can be found on his D2L site and in your textbook; use those resources. Francis Yee is a wonderful person, a humanitarian, he is organized, and driven. He is quiet with a accent that can make understanding him difficult. Tests are designed in an answer 2 out of three questions he tells you questions ahead of time.
Francis is such a nice guy. His lectures are a bit dull, but he is very organized and makes his class easy to follow along. He is incredibly helpful in his office hours. He gives you all the exam questions prior to writing them, so you can easily prepare and do well on exams. He is, however, a fairly picky marker. Overall a really nice prof.
I was looking forward to this class prior to taking it. The worst class I have had so far, Francis is very difficult to understand, not just his accent but also has a speech impedement. A few times he opened the class up for group discussions, only to tell students that they wrong. Smart man, but shouldn't be teaching. I will not take again, ever.
Lectures are hard to sit through, long and droning and the language barrier sometimes makes it hard to understand. Grade is based mostly off the end of the term project which is fine, but it makes sitting through lectures pretty tough knowing the exams don't make up a significant part of your grade.
Great prof but difficult to understand but very fair and passionate. Versatile in course, able to combine Labs with Projects and gives all exam questions before hand.
For a man who claims to be a humanitarian, I've never had a prof with such little regard for another human. If you have any mental illness, do NOT take classes with him. He requires you to present the final project in front of the entire class, no exceptions. When I expressed to him that I have severe anxiety, his answer was basically "too bad".
Worst prof I've had at Camosun. His English is incredibly hard to understand given his strong accent and speech impediment. Assignments are confusingly written and his grading criteria isn't clear at all. He docked me marks on the final exam because he didn't know a word I'd correctly used. I had to fight to get the marks back. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Francis was always available when extra help was needed. Lectures and assignment criteria were occasionally hard to follow or unclear. Seems genuinely passionate about what he teaches and will gladly provide extra help
A very knowledgable professor overall, but can make classes unnecessarily boring and difficult. Tends to talk quite slow and drag on simple concepts. Also, does not encourage class-discussion much which is a bummer for such an interesting subject! That being said, he is a very kind and caring guy.
I learned a lot in Francis' class and if you listened, it wasn't that hard to understand what he's saying despite his accent. Francis was clear on every assignment and exam, offered time in class to work on labs and was organized. Plenty of opportunity for extra credit. Lectures were boring at times and Francis is a hard marker but easy to do well
Lectures were incredibly hard to sit through (boring, read off his slides) and I briefly fell asleep several times. Can be condescending if he thinks you're not paying attention or don't understand what he means. When asked to clarify concepts, he basically would just repeat himself. Mandatory in-person presentation at end of year (yuck).
A good teacher. You will like the class if you are interested in the topics for sure, and the assignments he gives are really straight forward and clear to understand. He answers your emails within 24 hours which is nice and will always help you out if you have trouble understanding. Overall a good teacher and would recommend for geography
