Stop laughing so much it gets annoying
weird
hilarious but sometimes I was fighting to stay awake
fine I guess...
Goofy, He knows his books too well.
Enough with the laughing...right.
very informational lectures but he expects alot on his essays
Very intelligent professor.
Laughs alot and no one every laughs back
great prof, who rewards those who think. Find a way to quote machiavelli. he will remeber you always

Excellent prof, go to class and you will pass
Very smart and interesting to listen to. Recommended
He was a good teacher, but said "right" and laughed to himself alot, i counted him saying "right" 120 times in a 1hr class. He is a good teacher, quote what he says in class and you will pass with flying colors. If you answer in class
He is very intelligent, but he laughs to himself about 60 times every class. I liked him until he made fun of Kin students, now I kind of have a grudge against him... but he did kind of like my essay.
He is Canadian Woody Allen! Great (dry) sense of humor, you need to be intelligent to get his jokes otherwise you wonder why he laughs. He spends the time to actually help and guide your progress of u are motivated. Also it is very clear from class what he expects on exams.

Easy class. Nice guy. He swears alot and has a good sense of humour. I got nothing bad to say.
I can't believe some people actually think this man is a good prof! He is the WORST. AVOID THIS CLASS!! If you are a first year student and want to hear degrading comments directed at you for an hour and a half twice a week then u will love it. He is crazyyyyy mean. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Brilliant professor who realizes that humour is an effective teaching tool. Thanks to Dr. Zichy's dynamite night class in Canadian Literature, I got fired up about school again and went back to university. Changed my life!
i dont get why people dont like him. hes fantastic. read the books and if your half as smart as him youll get his jokes. sarcastic humour is helarious, use it in your papers and get ready for a good mark. dont feel bad if he makes fun of your papers, its better than just telling you your stupid.
His unofficial nickname among the class was "Zany Zichy", because he's pretty weird. The entries before this one pretty much sum it up: he laughs at his own jokes, talks to himself for a while, and sarcastically says that the essays are "dreadful." He really is nice, and is only being sarcastic.
Prof Zichy cuts through the bull that normally surrounds English class and gets to the point of the literature as opposed to a bunch of jargon. I used jargon until going to this class and seeing a very intelligent person use none of it in his class. Yes, he is a little strange, but that will only serve to keep you entertained. He's the best!
haha he is crazy... he likes to laugh a lot (at his own jokes)... he has really quizzes a lot that are really easy if you just read the handouts... only problem is he spent four 1 hour and 20 minute classes analyzing one poem, literally word for word, kinda boring if u don't like poems.. but all in all good
The Best English Prof. Ever! He doesn't worry terribly much about your grammar like most profs do. He looks for understanding of the material primarily. He likes to dig deep and read between the lines. This is what makes his class so interesting! As long as you actually try to do well you will.
HAha...so crazy! He is a super funny prof for sure and he really does know what he is doing...And is also very very helpful.
Like everyone else had said, he's crazy but in a good way. I doubt there are many other profs on campus who care as much about what their students learn as he does. Go Z., go!!!
He strays off topic A LOT and laughs at his own jokes that aren't even funny. He only deals with novels or poems that deal with sexuality and seems to be his favorite topic which in turn creates his **** views against women.
Really interesting ideas about life. A little crazy but thoughtful and kind.
This man is a riot. He has an intelligent sort of self deprecating humor, and is quite interesting to listen to. Nervous. Its as though he's watching for a sniper to show up in the back row and take him out. He's a fair marker and straight forward on what needs work and what doesn't. Holds organized lectures. Overall he's a decent prof.
Zichy is a really good prof, he always clearly explains what he expects from his students and marks fairly. Keep an open mind if you take his class, he is very opinionated and likes to make comments on things that his disapproves or dislikes. Overall a really good prof :)
Great prof. Interesting and insightful. Great sence of humour and knowledgable. one of my favorite profs. He marches to the beat of his own drum, which is refreshing in a prof.
Interesting guy. If you can get past all his random bursts of laughter, he has some very interesting thoughts and good advice. Really fair marker, class became more enjoyable later on in the year. I would definantly recommend him for english 110.
Awesome Prof, fair marker. He is also willing to answer questions about marking, and keeps the lecutre as interesting as possible (considering it is English). He got his PhD from Harvard, but is very humble and never bragged about it. All around great professor!
Fair marker - I'm doing well in his class. Sometimes it is hard to stay awake but when he's funny he crazy funny and oddly cynical about his job. Take first year English with him if you like good grades and good taste in literature
I heard great things about Zichy, but after I took a class with him, I wonder if these people were talking about another prof. He would come to class really irritable and bash women; completely unprofessional. He needs to keep his personal problems to himself.
One of the most insightful, enjoyable and WISE professors I've ever had. If you can get past his ranting, his occasional awkwardness, neroticism and cynicism (which i find very amusing) then I'm sure you'll learn something from this guy. His class is an education not just in english literature, but also in life itself. Highly Recommended.
I enjoyed his class. I would recommend him for a first year university student as he is very thorough, and goes over things more than enough times. There is no way you'll fall behind or do poorly in this class as long as you show up. Very easy to approach and learns the names of his students.
Quite the interesting professor! Yes, he sometimes loses track of his intended topics, but his discussions are never boring. Funny guy, too. He does do quizzes occasionally, so make sure to keep up on your reading.
He's fair and he's really nice. I disliked his poetry analysis, if it's up for interpreting, why do we get marked? Very helpful, funny, intelligent. His cynicism is amusing, it's funny when he's laughing because his laugh makes me laugh. I think he plays dumb sometimes too...He definitely makes english interesting. Fair but tough
I thought I was the odd ball in high school because of my views, I found myself agreeing with him (secretly) more and more...what he says sometimes, is frighteningly similar to my thoughts in late high school. His quizzes I found could work against or with you, but at least it wasn't putting all eggs in a basket.
I adored Professor Zichy! He's incredibly intelligent but self-deprecating (he always calls himself a failure). He's cynical and kooky, and his odd sense of humour makes lectures so fun. He's very approachable and insightful. He's a fair marker, and quizzes are easy if you've done the readings. This is a great class, esp. if you're a quiet student.
GREAT PROF! I will miss his class immensely because it is more about life in general than English. The man is a real-life genius and I feel lucky that I had the privilege to learn from him.
His class gave me something to look forward to twice a week. Has a lot of deprecating things to say about people and himself (so don't get offended). Hilarious! (Although classmates doesn't think so). Go into this class if you want to learn about life. Has his own way of being brilliant (doesn't believe in science, maybe he's just bad @ it.
Professor Zichy is awesome! I was really not looking forward to taking an English class in University but he made it fun. He has a very strange sense of humour but will teach you a lot about life. He also got me reading Jane Austen which I thought would never happen. Thanks for a good year Professor!
I was scared to take this class, and so pleasantly surprised! He is funny, down to earth, and goes over topics that he examines you on so you know what is coming up. He is a very fair marker, and has a funny sense of humour. I miss this class.
Best professor ever! Professor Zichy is hilarious and his laugh is infectious! I looked forward to every class just to see what he would say. I would definitely recommend taking a class from him!
Best English professor ever! He always made jokes (and he doesn't mind swearing) and made the literature very interesting. He expects you to do the work (attend class and read the materials) and he marks fairly easy (as long as you've started your essays earlier.) There will be pop quizzes now so READ your materials. P.S. he reads these comments.
I wish I had more excuses to take classes under this man. What a great character.
He's clearly a smart man who knows what he is talking about, but he assigns readings he doesn't discuss, runs out of his notes for the lecture halfway into it, before which he mainly compares the work to works we aren't going to read for another two weeks or points out funny anecdotes. You won't get more than a surface understanding of the texts.
Worst prof at the U of S by far
Zichy is a well-spring of cynical wisdom to life, love and everything in between. Some people don't appreciate his humour, but I thought he was (in his own terms) "funny as hell". Definitely my highlight of 1st year. He taught me to love poetry and take myself a bit less seriously.
Prof. Zichy is one best professors i have ever had, if not the best. I would definitely recommend him to any one. Eager to help his students and as someone in this post already mentioned, cynical but funny as hell!
After finding out some pretty interesting background info on Zichy I asked him, in class, if he was actually a Count in Hungry..after receiving a hilarious answer he won me over totally. The man is brilliant and whether you like him or not he has a lot to teach that is worth remembering. Great class, great teacher!
Very intelligent and has many insights to the works studied. He finds humour in most situations. He sometimes forgets that English is subjective and treats his views as the only views. He is a good professor, but my style of learning clashed with his style of teaching.
Awful. All he did was talk about sex in the most vile terms. He teaches Canadian lit but always says how much he hates it. This guy needs to retire...
You either like him or you don't. Overall was a great professor and learned a lot in his class. Definitely recommend taking one of his classes! :)
Prof. Zichy has a killer sense of humour, although some students may find it annoying. IMO he does extremely well teaching, he knows his material thoroughly, is VERY intelligent, explains concepts well, and keeps you interested with his hilarity. Pop quizzes keep you on your toes, so make sure you do the reading. Hes an oddball, an amiable oddball.
Would not take another class with him. Multiple students in my class say they're considering dropping the class. Constantly talks about having tenure and acts like that makes it okay not to care about his class. He talks for the full hour and 20 but I couldn't tell you what about. Not the book much. Hates Canadian lit but teaches it. Should retire.
You either like him or you don't. I found he was very interested in Canadian Lit. ad could make very good insights about the texts. Show up to class and you get good participation marks.
Not a fan of English, made it with taking
Hilarious prof. Loves to crack some jokes and is always jolly and giddy. If you read the material you should have zero problems doing well in his class. He is a very generous marker and seems like an all around sweet guy. 10/10 would recommend for first year english 110
PROF ZICHY IS MY FAVOURITE!!!!! Highlight of my day every MWF Super funny. Class is more about life than English. Totally would recommend. Prof Zichy said no one has ever given him a chili pepper so Zichy this is for you ;)
Prof. Zichy makes poetry interesting and gives easy quizes and tests
Very few assignments, very entertaining
Great prof!!!
Should be nominated & receive the best prof Attendance - Quit school if you are not planning on going to class I am Inspired by prof zichy
I have 350 characters to write with so here I go. TAKE THIS MANS CLASS. He is a wonderful prof who values education above all and drops real-life advice all the time. Teaches you more than any other college prof could, would re-take any of his courses if I had the chance to. Great jokes(sometimes weird lol) + easy on marks if you show up to lecture
Recommend it to anyone taking a first year English! He is hilarious and very passionate about what he teaches. Go to lecture, read the materials and listen to what he has to say then this course wouldn't be a problem at all. He is very fair with his marking too!
Prof. Zichy may be the most chill 1st year English prof you can have. He's old fashioned, so be prepared to go to class every day and take some notes. He's knowledgeable about the material he teaches and we had 2 essays all year, but lots of pop quizzes. Expects you to know your grammar by 18+ yrs old, which is reasonable, but is hilarious.
Prof. Zichy was my favourite instructor during my first year and probably will retain that spot for the rest of my education. I found him hilarious and compelling although he does tend to make some of the same jokes too often. I didn't do so well in the class because I didn't put enough effort in, but I would absolutely take it again regardless.
The greatest professor I've ever had. Take his class you will not forget it.
Best Professor! Just do not skip class or you wont pass the class. As he does not post notes online. Worth going to every class !
Hardly ever on topic, not sure what he was aiming to teach, dont think I learned a single thing. Talks about sex a lot. Wastes class time joking around and talking about politics or authors instead of the actual literature. Seems to hate Canadian literature. However, everything we read was a good read. Something for everyone reading wise.
This man truly cares for his students and no matter the time, place, or material, he will try his very best to meet with you. Although he tends to go off on stories, all of them were intertwined to the purpose and the topic at hand. Students complaining were the ones who only ever showed up every so often and talked obnoxiously all class long...
Prof Zichy was a great first year English prof, made a boring class bearable with his stories and was an easy marker as long as you showed up for class. Not missing class is important as he gave quizzes and didn't always give us dates that they would happen but easy class otherwise.
Prof. Zichy is a terrible prof. I will never take a single class from him again. He is rarely on topic hates the books he teaches and makes one point about a book and repeats it for weeks. I learned nothing all year.
Probably the best professor that I will have in university! Shared his life experiences through the form of poetry, and they were very interesting. If you are interested in having a whole new perspective on language, and life experiences TAKE THIS CLASS! Thank you Mr. Zichy!
It takes some time to get used to Zichy, but when you do you realize he is a very genuine and caring man. Not many profs know every student's name by the end of the class. Very fair marker - wants to see students succeed. Show up to class and prepare the readings ahead of time (due to pop-quizzes) and you'll do great!
I cant decide if hes a lunatic or a genius- probably a little of both. Easy marker, hilarious prof, and interesting content. Highly recommend for first year English
Zichy made this class so enjoyable. You can tell he loves what he does. He is always laughing and makes everything very clear. Highly recommend.
If you are looking for a decently easy grade then this is the prof for you. However, to achieve this be aware that you will have to sit through hours of his racist, sexist, and misogynistic views on the literature and the world. Talks about the same point for multiple classes so we never got to fully read or analyze the novels. Will not take again
I took his class during the pandemic so everything was online. There were no live lectures and was basically read the poems and make notes then take a quiz. After the quiz, he posts his personal notes about the answers to the quiz and more information. It was hilarious because he was very passive-aggressive in his notes toward the student. 2 essays
Just don't do it .... hardest marker for only a 100-level course. Worst mistake I could've made was enrolling in his English course.
Zichy is my favourite prof. He's like the classic cranky old guy. I had a blast in his class, but also fell asleep sometimes. The class is just him holding a book, reciting pieces and telling you his thoughts about it (the man does not hold back). take good notes, he's super kind when you need help. work hard & its an easy 90%
