“Professor Beltran uses a flipped classroom model because he thinks it's effective however upon discussing his teaching methods many of us agreed that it wasn't working out for us”
ECON160 - 2.0 rating“Uses flipped classroom (students have to watch hours worth of lectures before class, do practice problem sets, go to class & ask questions because he refuses to lecture, hw has to be done before class ideally)”

Professor Beltran-Silva was a good professor. It was his first semester teaching and his lectures are clear and helpful. There are weekly homework's and quizzes, two midterms, a cumulative final, and an extra credit assignment. Please take him if u can because he's nice and kind.
Teaches through Cengage and the book is also there and its expensive but manageable. Ask questions and expects answers and quizzes weekly. Difficult but does give a second chance on quizzes. Is accessible after class and tries his best in order for you to pass but difficult yet bearable for someone who struggles with ECON and has a busy schedule.
This class is Hard and the fact that he gives you so much information at once isn't helpful. Nothing about this class is easy and honestly, the workload needs to be cut down as well. Please find someone else to take, because his class just ain't it! Trust me save yourself!!
Prof Beltran-Silva is truly passionate about what he teaches which makes his class really interesting. There is a decent amount of work but a good amount of time and many opportunities for feedback. Exams are a little difficult but definitely doable! He definitely tries his best to give us as much practical experience as possible.
Very nice guy but definitely overcomplicates the class. He will spend 20 minutes explaining something that is very basic and can be explained in less than a minute. He also assigns so so so much work and makes you watch lecture videos outside of the actual class period where lecture should happen. Clearly caring but is a struggle to learn from
since it was online his class was not worth it. He wouldn't even teach the lecture the day off and he expects you to watch his lectures. This professor isn't worth it online.
I get that hes new, but his teaching style is really weird. You have to watch lecture recordings outside of class. The regular class session is just him asking questions and he would get annoyed when we didnt know the answers. There are weekly quizzes and homework but he gives you a second chance and you have unlimited attempts on the homework.
This class was really difficult. Dont listen to other reviews, hes a very caring professor and wants you to pass!! You have to work for your grade heavily as there is weekly quizzes, unlimited attempts on hw, quiz retakes, 2 midterms and a final. If you dont reach for help, you wont pass. I really had to work for my A but he is a very nice prof
He does give retakes for quizzes, and curves the midterms and final. However its difficult to learn from him. One of the worst instructors ive had when it comes to explaining things or teaching. Doesnt teach in class and makes you watch pre-recorded lectures out of class. We do problems in class but calls on people randomly, gets mad if u dont know
He was such a great professor! He gives 2 extra credits. One of them you do half of it in the beginning of the semester, and then you finish it at the end. 2 midterms, 1 final, lots of homework but the practice helps you understand the material. He is BEYOND caring, he gives very helpful tips on how to succeed in his class (LISTEN TO THEM).
In order to pass you have to set time aside. There is quizzes every class but he gives re takes as well. The class is kinda of tough but he truly cares for the students. He gives extra credit and he gives life advice which is helpful. He also gives practice problems for midterms and finals
Good Professor and very caring. Gives quizzes every week and retakes as well. 2 extra credit opportunities ( one you do at the half way point of the semester and the second is at the end of the semester). Two Midterms and a final! Mostly goes over questions from the quiz during class and wants you to watch pre recorded lectures. Homework every week
This professor challenges his students instead of encouraging them, his test questions are all ambiguous and with tricks, so the student will always get it wrong. He doesn't accept excuses for sick or emergency. He fails you if you get in an emergency.
For some reason, doing homework and reviews at TopHat made this class a whole lot easier. Each lesson has a set of review questions, WHICH I HIGHLY RECOMMEND DOING because the quizzes and tests are based on those review questions. He even takes time to email each student individually for feedback. Overall, a very caring and friendly professor :)
Great Professor, he gave me good feed back and helped whenever it looked like I was struggling.
Highly recommend this professor. If you really put in the work, you will pass the class with an A. He really cares about his students and responds to email very fast. Tophat is required and there is weekly homework and quizzes. Quizzes are easy if you do the homework. Midterms are a little difficult, but if you study, you'll pass.
Where do I begin? During the hardest year in college and the pandemic, professor Beltran helped me succeed and thrive. He comes with a passion to teach and guide his students. He knows what tools and knowledge are necessary for an economics major to do well in their career. Study hard, ask questions and participate. MAKE SURE YOU DO THE HOMEWORK!
This class one of the best classes I took at CSUN. The teacher was so nice and his lectures were very interesting and he teach everything the easy way and when you asked questions he would always have an answer AMAZING teacher!!!
Very good professor, he has prerecorded videos about the topics, which help you a lot and are very good practice for the exam. If you want to pass this class you need to put at least 5 hours into it.
Good professor just be on top of your assignments and reading and pay attention to lectures
Very good professor, he has prerecorded lectures about the topics, which is very helpful for upcoming quizzes.
Every week there is reading,HW problems, and an in-class quiz. 2 lowest quiz scores get dropped and there's a retake if people do poorly. 2 EC opportunities, 1 halfway and the other towards the end. The professor loves to answer questions and will help you if you ask. Responds quickly to emails. Do the HW and reading problems to study for tests.
One of the best professors I've taken; extremely professional, but caring after class. classes are not easy, so if you are looking an easy A with only 30min of work every week find someone else. It is a junior-year class so I think the stress and amount of work is acceptable.
There is a lot of work for his class and quizzes every week. However he does care and will email you if you need help or to get feedback. I only take one of his other classes because he cares for your grade but there is a lot of work to be done in this class. Would only recommend if you are ready to study and put in the work.
Professor Silva Beltran is the best ECON 160 teacher ever. He grades quizzes and tests fairly. Everything he does is multiple choice like assignments, quizzes, and exams. Also, Professor Silva is very caring person; he wants all students to succeed, understand, and get good grades on each section of ECON.
I had Professor Beltran for econ160 and at first the class was difficult to understand and I thought I wasn't going to do well in it. But throughout the semester I did his practice problems, reviewed the homework, and asked him any questions I had, which made things more clear. His lectures can be confusing but the homework helps.
I took Econ 160 in spring of 2021 everything was online but the Professor made things very interactive and very helpful. He’s by far one of the most approachable teachers that I’ve had at CSUN. As long as you do the work the class should be easy. Also he discards the lowest grades, and he gives out practice quizzes that are SUPER helpful.
I took Prof. Beltran-Silva for my Economic Development class at CSUN. He was very good at explaining the subject to the students and I learned a lot of important information about the subject. Very interesting class, highly recommend it!
I would recommend this professor, he is one of the best professors I have taken at CSUN. He cares about his students. Studying the homework helps a lot for the quizzes. Also, paying attention to his lectures helps.
Professor Beltran was amazing, he went out of his way to make sure the students understand what hes going over. We had a test every week and he also offers retakes which really helps a lot. Homework every week and he always goes over most of the material from the quizzes and homework during class so people can understand the concept.
The course well taught. Explained concepts and material clearly to understand. Participation was required, but I think that was great because it helps us see if we are understanding what was being taught. He would review the material or the concepts that we wouldn't understand. I would highly recommend this professor.
Professor Beltran-Silva is one of the best professors I’ve ever had. His lectures are very detailed and is gladly willing to go over concepts you need help on. His lectures are very helpful for the quizzes. You take quizzes in class, and allows re-takes for those who wish to. He listens to students, and cares for their input. 10/10.
Professor Beltran is a caring and understanding professor as long as you put in the effort you will pass his class. He gives extra credit opportunities and drops your lowest five quiz's.
Really great professor! There to help you and answer all your questions. The lectures are interesting and clear. Removes the lowest test score which helps a lot.
Great Prof. would 100% take another one of his courses.
He is a caring professor, you can definitely reach out to him. In the beginning, I was having a hard time doing the weekly quizzes but I starting going over the reading material and review questions and I did better on both the weekly quizzes and exams. His teaching methods are really good and he makes it easy for you to understand the concepts.
If your looking for the best Professor please choose him. He is very caring and is always willing to help. There are weekly quizzes which are questions from homework’s and that applies the same for mid-terms and exams very similar questions. The material is not hard to learn and you can always ask for help. TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT A STRAIGHT A!!
I took this class in Spring 2021 and he was by far one of the most caring professors I've had. I actually failed the first exam and he reached out giving tips and followed through the entire term to help me succeed. Do the homework, it actually helps you learn, and he's nice enough to give extra credit that ACTUALLY helps your score.
Really good professor and great teaching structure. He had very useful video lectures which I preferred over the textbook. I really liked that he gave quiz insurance where you get extra credit points towards your midterms for doing well of quizzes. Other positives include quiz retakes, minimum homework, availability outside of class, etc.
Amazing professor with an extensive knowledge of microeconomics. Truly cares for his students and clearly outlines what is required to be successful in the class. Always responded quickly to emails and took the time to give thorough explanations of confusing homework problems. Weekly quizzes are great practice for the midterm/final.
Some other aspects that I liked was that he would count the highest scores for the hw and quizzes. Also we did take the quizzes in class and after we did went over them so it helped. He would also provide video lectures which we could watch on our own time and allowed for discussion of any uncertain concepts in class instead of having lecture.
- Test and quizzes were from the book as well from the lecture. - Professor was accessible and conscientious with students. - Grading was fair and assignments according to syllabus. - I suggest a more straightforward method for explaining the supply and demand topic during the lecture, since the graphs are difficult to read at the beginning.
Professor Beltran Silva is one of the most caring professors at Csun. He is great to go to for school/career advice. As for the class itself there were 10 quizzes, weekly hw assignments, two midterms and a final and he offered a lot of extra credit. The best way to prepare for the midterms are to review the quizzes and hw. Overall a great class.
Professor Beltran-Silva is easily one of the best and most caring professors at CSUN. His course structure is very straightforward and organized. Read the chapter and view the recorded lecture before attending class. He wants students to come prepared to ask questions and participate in class discussions. Lots of self studying is required to pass!
Great Professor provides extra credit and drops the lowest five quizzes.
You have to put in time to see results, but that goes for any class not just for this one. Class structure is straightforward; read chapter and watch the recorded lecture before attending. Homework actually helps while studying for exams. He’s actually interested in getting to know his students, easy to strike up a conversation with.
Prof Silva cares a lot about his students, and he always goes above beyond to help you. Econ development is very interesting, but at the same time, the material is hard. For the first midterm, I had gotten a C, but Prof Silva has so many ways that you could recuperate your score. One of the best profs at CSUN. This class is not for lazy people!
Professor Beltran is amazing and genuinely cares about his students doing their best and understanding the material. He is easy-going which makes it easy to participate and ask any questions during class. Of course, you need to put in the work to earn your grade but the professor makes it clear that he is always there to help with anything.
Great professor. There were no surprises when it came to exams; everything was based off of the lectures and the text. There was a group project that was enjoyable to do and Profesor Beltrán-Silva provided good feedback
The grading policy was very forgiving, the 5 lowest quiz grades are dropped. Also if you get high scores on your quizzes, you could get up to 10 extra points on the midterms. The professor was able to teach the information very well and it was easy to understand from his teaching style.
Professor Beltran was one of the best professors I've had. Communication is key and the material is a bit difficult at first but he gives great examples and provides extra practice questions that help a lot on the exams and quizzes. Not only does he teach you Econ but he gives great advice and inspired me to do my best in all my courses.
Professor Beltran is a perfect example of what a great professor should be. He goes above and beyond to make sure students understand the material. Not only is he passionate about teaching economics, but he's also passionate to help his students in any possible manner. He inspired me to minor in economics! I recommend him!
Professor Beltran-Silva is a completely understanding professor that cares about his students. He is absolutely approachable about anything from modern media to issues you're having in class. To this day I use Professor Beltran-Silva's class as an indicator on whether or not a class I'm taking is as structured as I would like it to be.
Great professor. Put in the work and effort, and you will succeed. The professor does a great job of motivating the students to perform at their maximum potential.
One of the few classes I actually learned stuff in. Attendance was mandatory but his lectures and in class problems were very helpful. He explained everything clearly but make sure you watch his lectures before you attend class. Weekly quizzes but he drops the lowest grades.
Professor Beltran-Silva was probably the one Professor who actually cared the most about his students and their future over anyone else that has taught me. He is always available and willing to help you with your grade. If you show up to class, listen and do the homework (the minimum you should be doing anyway) you will get an A. Highly recommend!
Truly cares that his students pass although the material is hard he makes it commendable. He has pre-recorded lectures that you watch before class. Quizzes every week and also retakes. Drops the lowest 5 quizzes which is amazing. Just take him, you won't regret him at all. Best Econ Professor of the university.
Normally, I tend to struggle with Econ, but Prof. Beltran-Silva made the class so amazing. Attendance is not mandatory but strongly recommended since we have a quiz/retake quiz and go over questions each class period. He really does care about his students and will take into account any recommendations you may have.
I took this class online once a week. I think it's a wonderful class. If you pay attention to the texts in the tophat and the lecture, you will get good grades easily in this class. You will have a quiz at the start of every lectures. Quiz questions may a little bit challenge, but you will get chance to take it again if you do not get a good score.
Professor Francisco Beltran-Silva is an outstanding professor. By all means take his 160 course if you want to have an actual understanding of microeconomics principles, and have a good time doing it. Professor Beltran will always be available to help with any troubles you have and will go out of his way to help if he sees you are falling behind.
Easily one of the best professors I've had at CSUN. The class is straight forward: weekly quizzes at the start of class, lecture, and a chance to ask questions and work out problems from either hw or quizzes, and a weekly homework assignment. He's caring and emails w/ updates w/ your standing in the class. Do the work and you'll pass
Great Professor, super inspiring! I hope to take him for Econ 370. As an Econ major, he offered a great introduction to the field. His class was super engaging, but it also allowed for self-study. As long as you put in the time, it is an easy A. Extra credit opportunities!
Professor was great. Super caring and understanding! Course is on website called Tophat meanwhile lectures in class. Going to class does not affect your grade but highly recommended considering in class there is extra credit participation (helped me a lot). Hw on sundays but not hard or overwhelming. Extra credit essay assignment. Overall, great!
Really cool guy who cares about his students. He wants everyone to get an A. You can get an A in this class by just watching the lectures which he uploads. There is a quiz every week but they are easy since he provides lots of practice problems.
The textbook, homework, and quizzes will all be on TopHat. You will need to watch his recorded lectures and read the textbook to prepare for the quizzes. The quizzes are every class meeting (only keeps the highest) and the homework is due every Sunday. There is an extra credit assignment. His lectures revolve around students' questions.
Great professor. Extremely knowledgeable. I thoroughly enjoyed this class, as he made the material engaging and prepares you for quizzes and assignments. Always willing to help and makes himself accessible through email. Lots of ways for your grade to improve including him dropping multiple low grades on quizzes and discussions.
Take feedback to learn areas you may be deficient in. He is not easy but you will learn. He wants you to succeed and will give you tips in case you decide on graduate school.
He will take his time of the day and check on each students progress in this course. He is also generous when it comes to grading with extra credits
The professor is really approachable and goes out of his way to help students succeed and get the highest grade possible.
Great professor, very knowledgeable. Not only is he willing to help but offers great feedback and countless ways to improve your grade. Extra credit is a big one! Everything is on Tophat and you watch pre-recorded lectures each chapter. Along with a quiz but drops the 5 lowest. Definitely Recommend!
Really good professor! Worries about students and have a great course program!
He's one of my most memorable professors and provides great advice. He's very forgiving overall and is willing to give lots of feedback/examples that will help you get the grade you want. He's accessible through email, office hours, and classroom discussions and provides very practical advice for your career which most professors do not. .
Professor Beltran is undoubtedly the best Professor I have had at CSUN. He cares so much about his students and it shows. You learn so much and learn skills through his assignments that you will take with you for the rest of your life. Professors like him make me proud to be a a matador. Take his class! Work hard and listen! You will not regret it
professor francisco's class is tough, but he is very supportive in helping his students as best as he can like dropping discussions/quizzes and replacing a low test score. the class is made up of projects, discussions, quizzes, and tests. by the end of the course, the grade you get will be equal to the amount of effort that you put in.
He cares and wants his students to pass the class. He offers extra credit opportunities. There are quizzes every class period which is overwhelming at times, but that is because he gives us one retake per quiz. At the end of the semester, he drops the lowest 5 out of 10. No live lectures, pre-recorded lectures are assigned for hw which are long.
Professor Beltran-Silva was a great professor. He was always happy to help. Great communicator and is very understanding. As long as you do the lectures, homework, and reading lecture questions you should be fine.
I had Francisco for my ECON160 class and it was a pretty easy class. There was assigned decent amount of homework and weekly quizzes, but they weren't that hard. I would take this professor again.
By far, one of the best teachers I've ever had. The class seemed daunting at first, but it was very fair and doable. You will need to put in the work to succeed. He gives extra credit opportunities and he drops half of your quiz grades. You also get to retake all the quizzes. Go to office hours!! He is super patient and kind, utilize all resources!
Very knowledgeable professor, group projects are involved, and a lot of reading. Heavy curving on grading, and very understanding professor
After taking various econ courses and gone through alot of Professors, Prof. Silva has been my favorite. You can tell he actually cares about his students, something that has been rare throughout my econ major experience at CSUN. He focuses on a mix of econ and real world skills in his lectures that can be applied in the working world. Great class!
He is a good professor and really helped me learn econ. One of my favorite teacher/professors I have taken in all my years of school.
Professor Silva is the true definition of what I always wanted to look for in a Professor. He is caring and very considerate with his students and what they are going through. It is very important to have a supportive teacher that you are comfortable with so it can be easy for you to learn. Professor Silva is great! if you want to learn, take him!
Amazing Professor! Not the typical "you're on your own" professor, he will personally reach out to you about your grade and give tips on how to improve. Offers extra credit and is always ready to help anyone either in class or during office hours! Definitely the most supportive professor I've had at CSUN. Lectures are prerecorded, quizzed in person
I would recommend you show up to class because he provides a lot of extra credit. The class really isn't that hard, you just need to put a little time into it. Anyone who got a bad grade in this class probably skipped class because the extra credit really carried my grade.
Pretty nice and chill professor, is always ready to help you if you are having difficulty. Attendance is not mandatory, but showing up helps your grade. Overall, I would recommend to him.
Professor Silva has a very straightforward teaching style. We had numerous opportunities to improve our grades with extra credit and test curves! We had weekly quizzes and homework, as well as retake quizzes which added extra credit on the midterms/final. We were always encouraged to go to office hours and expand our learning! Very knowledgeable!
Professor Beltran is a kind professor who reaches out to students on a regular basis to offer advice on how to study and improve your grade. The online text, quizzes, and exams, are on TopHat. He offers a lot of opportunities to boost your grade, especially with the insurance policy, which helped me. I highly recommend taking him.
Really good professor, encourages students to ask questions and overall would recommend this class to others.
Professor Beltran-Silva was hands down the most participative professor of the semester. He makes learning fun, and explains things in creative and easy to understand ways. There is a chapter lecture and quiz every week, with the option to retake that quiz the following week. I could write a lot more but my characters are limited
Totally recommend taking this professor if you want a watered down version of the subject. He's great at to the point.
This professor at the higher level course will slowly focus on how to succeed as a good worker. The class concepts, independent research & referencing class-provided resources, and independent debate will get you thinking. Thus, if you want a class that is different from the prof-reading-textbook, then this prof. will provide the space for that.
He is one of the best economic professors here at CSUN always care for his students and gives a great amount of chances to improve the grade, amazing lectures and extra credit, I would definitely take his class again
This professor is one the best at CSUN. He cares about his students so much. Topics are always fun and informative. This prof prepares you for the work life. You put a lot of effort on the class but it is definitely worth it. The course is ECON420 not 370.
Time management is very important for this class. He truly cares about his students succeeding. Very knowledgeable about the course and lenient on grading. The extra credit assignment is a lot but I do recommend doing it.
Professor Silva is a good professor. As a person he is great, caring and wants his students to pass. There is weekly homework on Top Hat and weekly quizzes. There are 2 midterms and 1 cumulative final. One thing I did not like is his teaching style. He wanted us to read the material at home and we would just go to class and he would answer question
Prepared teacher who is very good at explaining topics and making sure that you understand them. The best way to succeed in this class is to review the material that he tells you to review. It is also recommended that for difficult chapters to attend his office hours. Overall a very good teacher.
I would definitely recommend taking professor Silvas class. He gives many opportunities and resources so that you can excel in his class.
Great Professor, had him two classes in a row and was very pleased with his teaching methods. Would recommend.
Professor Beltran-Silva is a professor that wants to see his students succeed. If you put in the effort you will do great in his course. You will be utilizing a third-party software called TopHat a lot, so check TopHat to see what assignments you need to complete. Highly recommend going to his office hours, he helps clarify concepts. A solid guy.
Very good professor, his instructions are very clear and his exams are based off of what he tells you to study with no surprises at all. The weekly article summaries he assigns are based on interesting articles and are not too time consuming. Make sure you do it in the correct format so no points will be deducted. It was my favorite class for Fall.
No option for ECON 421. He was a nice guy and wanted us to succeed in the class and in work, but I was not a fan of how he chose to structure the class. It was half and half lecture/discussion but the lectures were so dense and boring that they were hard to follow and the lecture slides were just a pain to study from. Discussions were good tho
Professor Beltran-Silva is both a very knowledgeable and helpful professor. The class consisted of two midterms, both worth 25% each and weekly discussion assignments that were worth 50% of your grade. Professor Beltran-Silva also helped his students gain competitive advantage for the future by covering study habits and non-academic strengths.
Really great professor, cares a lot about his students and will email you directly if he notices any slips in your grade. Gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. Lectures posted online & class is for questions and further discussions. Uses TopHat online textbook which is easy to navigate and has great resources as well. Participation is key!
Great professor! The class was difficult at the start because he's a tough grader, so it's crucial to follow his instructions carefully. He's very knowledgeable and provides real world advice for his students. Exams are fairly easy if you follow his studying recommendations. He gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit, so take advantage of it!
Professor Silva really cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed. The material is heavy however he offers multiple extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. Definitely not an easy A class, but if you put in the effort and activity participate during class it will pay off.
Without a doubt of the best professors CSUN has to offer, Professor Beltran-Silva truly cares about each and everyone of his students. He truly wants you to succeed in and out of the classroom. The class was hybrid, half online lecture, half in-class discussion. Make sure you go to class and participate! Go to his office hours as well!
Great Professor! In addition to teaching economics, his course gives students the skills they need to win any job they want. Even if you fail the first half of the semester and the midterm you can still get an A. He drops five out of the eleven lowest discussion points. The lectures are extremely interesting and he has clear grading criteria.
Class format is hybrid;Lecture one day, open conversation/debate the other. Weekly articles given to summarize and follow strict format and converse about the articles. Slides are very dense and hard to breakdown but professor is always open for questions. Great caring professor who wants you to succeed in and outside of class.
This course is difficult if you don't participate and don't pay attention. As long as you do what is expected, you'll do great. And TAKE HIS ADVICE!
Amazing professor, very caring and will do everything he can to help you pass the class.
He takes attendance using the online course, so you have to be there every lecture. Economics is hard in general and he doesn't explain things well. He tries to explain the material in class, but is confusing so I never understood. Definitely would take a different professor, who could explain things better. Exams are hard. Hw every week.
The professor makes it very clear how to get a good grade in his class. He drops half the quizzes at the end of the semester and offers retakes for every quiz. Participation and attendance in lectures are not mandatory but help in the course. Also the pre-recorded lectures help a lot on the quizzes and exams. Overall a great class and not too hard.
Professor Beltran-Silva truly cares about the students succeeding in class. He has a very clear grading guideline and as long as you follow it, you should do well in this class. He drops 5 of the lowest scores for lectures and he gives several bonus points.
This professor is one the best at CSUN. He cares about his students so much. Topics are always fun and informative. This prof prepares you for work life. You put a lot of effort into the class but it is definitely worth it.
Professor Beltra-Silva cares a lot about his students' success both within the classroom and post graduation. There were weekly discussions that took place regarding a variety of labor economics articles. Not only did we stay informed with current events, but we also developed structured debating skills. Overall, I would highly recommend.
Great prof!
If you think you can get away with skipping classes. You can't. All tests and quizzes require a code aside from retakes. Did I mention even if you have the code, TopHat tracks your location. Lame.
Not sure what everyone was raving about, worst Professor ever. He refuses to lecture, assigns hour long videos (multiple) to watch before class, and never answers questions during class. He takes peoples questions and answers them with questions. Uses Tophat, need a code for everything and everything is monitored. 2 Midterms, 1 Fin. Weekly assigmts
He cares more about volleyball than his student's education. Always says that one should advocate for their education since one is paying for it but doesn't even teach, he wants everyone to be independent and to learn how to use their resources.
He's anti lecture & anti his JOB! Refuses to teach students in person, makes pre rec'd lectures (hours worth) in which he never gets to the point. You have to teach yourself and get help from tutors or other students. He emails you essays multiple times throughout the week. multiple midterms, cumulative final, 1 ec that you won't get full pts for.
Teach yourself and you'll do okay however teaching yourself defies the purpose of having a professor to begin with. Horrible, wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy.
Very touch grader. Quizzes every week & expects alot from you
He does not lecture in class , so you have to learn the material yourself. You have to attend class to earn insurance to go your tests and quizzes. You will have to watch lectures every week that are long. Also, you will want to keep up with doing your homework and also it helpful to practice problems before you take your quizzes and exams.
Professor Beltran-Silva was always willing to help during office hours, via email, and in class. He gives clear instructions, grades generously, and cares about the wellbeing of his students. This class isn't for those who care about an easy A. You get what you put into this course. Take this class and take advantage of office hours.
Professor Beltran-Silva is a very reasonable professor. He gives extra credit opportunities, offers something called insurance (which is basically extra credit you can get for exams by attending class throughout the semester), drops your 5 lowest quiz grades, etc. But, don't think this will be an easy class. Econ is very difficult.
If you're signing up for an in person class expecting it to be your typical in person class, this won't be it. Prof assigns hrs worth of lectures to watch before class and then still wants you to come in for an hr worth of q&a sessions. Many students pointed out that the teaching technique was inefficient and he could care less.
Pros: hw due sun, extra ptson exams for retaking weekly quizzes, 2% ec opportunity, drops 5 quizzes. Cons: Never lectures in class, makes pointless recorded lectures, never fully answers your questions (tiptoes around the answer), doesn't listen to student input. Only take this class if you want to be stresses continuously and want to teach urself
He doesn't care if you understand the material or not, don't waste your time expressing your concerns with his teaching style because he won't change it to better suit you even though you're paying tuition in exchange for him being a good professor. Learn the material on your own and you'll have a better chance of getting a good grade.
Professor Beltran-Silva thoroughly laid out all class expectations and materials. He utilizes an ample amount of extra credit for quizzes, exams, and base percentage points. The class is designed in all aspects to benefit the student, the grade you receive represents the time and effort put in. An A is easily earned if you follow his instructions.
Professor Beltran-Silva cares about his students like no other professor I've ever had. While his course may be difficult and demanding at times, if you put in an honest effort to his course he rewards you with a great grade and incredible feedback. This professor makes this course a bit difficult because he wants to prepare his students.
All lectures are online, but the class is hard to fail. I took it upon myself to learn on my own (YT & TopHat helped a lot). There are quizzes each class (10+10 retakes; he drops lowest 5). The tests are heavily curved. Show up to class! Attendance+ retake scores calculate your curve. Be ready to study if you want an A (try to find a study partner)
Pretty hard class you have to put in the time to study and make sure you study the right way. Don't just do practice problems to study for exam make sure you watch the lectures and study your notes. He gives us decent opportunities to not fail the class so take advantage of those. Class can be boring at times unless you engage and ask questions.
This professor has a flipped classroom method which in case you don't know you do the homework and lectures at home. So when you come to class the professor will answer questions you have. This teaching method doesn't work for me because I require the professor to lecture me in person instead of 40 mins videos online.
This is a very difficult class as you need to put the time and effort outside of class. He's a good professor however I do not like his flip classroom teaching method it left me more confused and lost. He really wants you to do well as he assigns extra credit. Please take the extra credit and go to office hours. Good luck ya'll!
One of the few classes that challenged me academically and made me reflect on my study and note-taking skills. If you take this class: read the syllabus for due dates, ask questions, visit office hours, and take good notes. This class is worth it. It's difficult at times, but he's generous and curves. He's wise and offers grad + job advice.
If your major is Business, I recommend taking Prof. Silva's class. He wants his students to succeed and goes out of his way to help. His homework assignments & the practice quizzes allow you to have all the practice you need to prepare for the exam. Watch his videos, make sure to use that time to do the work, and continue to practice the problems.
Uses flipped classroom (students have to watch hours worth of lectures before class, do practice problem sets, go to class & ask questions because he refuses to lecture, hw has to be done before class ideally) . If you rely on your professor walking you through lessons this class isn't for you, you have to learn everything completely on your own.
Professor Beltran uses a flipped classroom model because he thinks it's effective however upon discussing his teaching methods many of us agreed that it wasn't working out for us. We made sure to let him know that his fc method was inefficient but he refused to hold traditional lectures because he read that it's a good method despite us struggling
Professor Silva is one of the toughest professors I have ever had at CSUN. Exams are tough but they are significantly curved. He is a great professor and wants you to do well but you have to put in the work. He is very helpful in his office hours and answers each question thoroughly.
The class structure is you watch the lectures before class and then come to class for any clarifications. When it comes to grading, he is the type of professor that wants to help you get a good grade. If you need help with a concept, ask in class, he will explain everything. His office hours are very useful. Overall he is very sweet and respectful.
This is an asynchronous class labeled as a synchronous one. You're expected to learn on your own time by watching multiple pre-recorded lectures at home. You're also expected to do work outside of class so that you're able to ask questions during class. Prof will not answer questions clearly, he gives examples/questions that indirectly answer you.
Take class if you love math, don't take it if you struggle. This professor favors flipped classroom as his teaching method and doesn't really care if his students don't do well with it. You have to learn everything on your own by reading the textbook or watching his lecture videos. Then you have to ask questions during class, he'll answer vaguely.
The 5/5 ratings lied to me so bad. He uses a website to track your location for attendance. Recorded lectures super long. Anyways beware
Just simply awful. GO ANYWHERE ELSE AND RUN!!
You pay for an in-person lecture yet this professor teaches the course as a hybrid making you watch his two-hour lectures before class. Then in class, you review random problems which is very confusing. Has handwritten HW submissions that he will gladly give you a 0 on if one detail is missed, and they're useless and time-consuming.
This class was very difficult for me with 4 page papers due every week and 2 very difficult tests. However, Professor Beltran-Silva cares a lot about what he does and wants his students to succeed. Once again, this is a very hard class but if you care about the quality of your education, I highly recommend it.
- GO TO OFFICE HOURS This professor is very helpful during office hours and will spend hours with you to make sure you understand a concept. - WATCH LECTURES The online lectures are critical to passing the course and make sure to watch them to do well on the quizzes and finals. He wants to see all of his students succeed.
Good professor. Not going to be easy unless you put in the work. Uses online methods for homework, not the best. Need to put in time outside of class. Overall, very caring professor, and a very nice guy. Class isn't easy
If Im being completely honest, you have to learn everything yourself since he provides a bunch of video lectures for you to watch. I was completely clueless but thank god I passed the class, coming to class for me personally felt like a waste of time as well. weekly quizzes on monday's and retakes on Wednesday.
I loved this class. It was well-rounded: we practiced our "soft skills" by participating in class discussions (for credit) and also learned about labor econ. Professor Francisco is very knowledgeable, genuine, and caring. This is a solid class for anyone who actually wants to learn about labor economics.
Professor Silva was awesome! His class is tough, but you will gain a lot of knowledge that will help you in the future. He gives you opportunities to better your grade if you put the effort. He is very inspirational and is wiling to help if you give an effort. Take him!!! Challenging but very rewarding.
The class was great. The professor was understanding and explained the topics well. Although you have to do papers every week, the only issue is that you might not get the formatting right the first time, but it is easy to improve on. The class is very informative and explains a lot of the current topics. Great class.
50% weekly discussions. 10 points each, 7 from the report and 3 from in class participation, dropping the lowest 5. Great opportunity for free points, but you need to be proactive with them 50% VERY difficult tests, but with fair curves. Study the slides ONLY, make sure you conceptually understand a majority of the models, have a good cheat sheet
Professor Beltran-Silva is a very good professor who encourages his students and gives them opportunities to succeed
Format of the class is 2 weekly lectures: a discussion & a lecture. Discussions are great for practicing document preparation & presentation skills. Lectures provide the economic concepts about Labor Economics. Overall Professor is a fantastic professor who cares about your future. Grading is generous and if you try you will get an A.
I had a great experience in this class. Definitely not easy, but if you put in time outside of class studying you'll well. Watch the lectures and take notes. Ask questions! It will clear up so much confusion when you ask in class or during office hours. The professor is very kind and really wants to help you learn so don't be afraid to speak up!
If you are genuinely trying to learn econ he's a great professor. If you want an easy A this is not the class. Kind and very easy to talk too. Def go to office hours. He Curves, weekly quizzes+make ups, Offers EC, Weekly HW, Cheat Sheet for exams. I dislike the flipped classroom model; watch pre-rec lectures before coming to class.
If you do the weekly articles and participate consistently in the discussions, you're guaranteed to at least pass with a C. Midterm and Final are a little hard but he curves them pretty nice. Even with the articles, its a thing you get used to and it becomes automatic for you every week.
This class was challenging but put in effort and do your work and he will reaar
Professor Beltran's class is definitely manageable as long as you put in effort and study before quizzes and exams. He offers extra credit, drops the lowest quiz and hw scores, and curves exams so it helps a lot. Definitely take this class if you want to feel encouraged to succeed and if you're curious about how a flipped classroom works.
Professor Silva is very encouraging and cares about his student's future and wellbeing. The amount of work and material is definitely heavy, but if you work hard you can do it. Quizzes every class, retakes for quizzes, and has lots of extra credit for midterms and the final.
I'm gad I took this professor. Dr. Beltran-Silva is caring and extremely knowledgable in the field of economics. His lectures are quite open ended and focused on answering student's questions on material. He dropped half of our lowest grades in both quizzes and homework. Highly recommend this professor. I learned much and always felt encouraged
My negative review was deleted multiple times. He asked us to give him good reviews at the end of the class. Save yourself!
The rating is very deceiving on this one, avoid him if you can
I have taken Econ 160 in 2 institutions and I can tell that there is no professor as Dr Beltran. He cares about you to learn and gives you many options to get a good grade. It is not an easy class, but Dr Beltran makes it in my opinion, as easy as possible.
This is one of the most caring professors I've had. Can be a critical grader but at the same time very manageable. Less intellectually demanding material vs. other 300 and 400 econ courses, even though I was still challenged on tests/quizzes. Takes attendance and can spend too much time talking about obvious and unrealistic methods of development
Avoid at all costs, you could think he is cool, and is great at teaching the material, but his system sucks, it really does, if you are taking more than one class, you should avoid him, He has big expectations, and he is not tolerant for anything. AVOID HIM.
RIP your GPA. Avoid!
He actually cares to help you pass the class and grades in a way that will help you even if you struggle.
Intimidating, seemingly rigorous requirements, just like in the professional world. But keep it professional and do your best, and you will be rewarded, just like in the real world! - Warren
Prof gives many opportunities for students to succeed & will reward students who show effort. Going to his ofc hrs goes a LONG way and the prof is extremely patient & attentive. Very thought provoking class and overall enjoyable experience. Prof gives you all resources to ace his class, you just have to give him/them your attention.
Professor Silva, as challenging and demanding as he can be, genuinely cares for all of his students and brings out the best in everyone. He curves generously and provides many opportunities to earn extra points throughout the semester. He is always available for office hours and is hands down the most supportive professor I have ever had.
This class heavily depends on weekly prerecorded lectures, quizzes , and handwritten homework. The professor does a great job at answering any questions and cares about their students. Advice for this class: stay on top of the weekly prerecorded lectures, ask a lot of questions, and come to class.
He is an amazing professor who genuinely cares about his students' success. Beyond mastering the subject, he helps improve habits like attention to detail when submitting homework. This skill benefits students in their professional lives, making them more meticulous when applying for internships or jobs, thereby enhancing their career prospects.

Professor Beltran's class at first can be a little overwhelming and you'll wish you had chosen a different professor but later in the semester you'll realize that he is actually a good professor. Also 2 quizzes a week. One retake and one quiz on the chapter. You also don't have to stay in class after the quizzes, you wont get marked present though.
This class is tough, but Professor Beltran genuinely cares about your success. The weekly quizzes and handwritten homework can be challenging, but they help develop essential professional skills. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep.
Wouldn't recommend has a odd teaching style He would have you watch videos weekly which are the lectures about 2 hours a week and would still make you come to class. Attendance is mandatory after 3 absences he would start taking off points. I got really sick and had to go to the hospital and he wouldn't excuse it since I didn't have a doctors note.
hes is genuinely one of the worst professors i ever had, what is even the point for the handwritten submission part of the homework, even if its only 5% wrtitting the homework and drawing every graph every week feels repetitive and it is not efficient for learning, if you are liked by him you passed if not the gl, horrible professor and experince
Professor Silva is tough but not impossible. At first I was overwhelmed by his handwritten homework but once I got used to the flow of the class, it was a lot more enjoyable. He drops a lot of Hwks and tests, and gives you multiple oppurtunities to improve your grade by a lot. Be ready to take notes, watch lectures, and invest at least 5 hrs a week
This professor is great, he is very knowledgeable about his subject and makes the lectures interesting and informative to the students. The course is divided into lectures and weekly discussions, which makes the learning even more effective and enjoyable for the students. It is hard, so take it if you're ready to study!
Teacher is a lot of work but does give a lot of extra credit opportunity. I'd take another class with him. His tests are very hard but they are curved.
This class is really tough and consists of weekly class discussions and lectures. There are multiple opportunities for extra credit and I recommend taking them as exams are very tough. Professor Beltran really cares about his students and even provides tutoring during his office hours, so if you're falling behind you should definitely go.
The professor will tell you what he is looking for on assignments. Trust him, and you'll get the grade you want. Part of what he is looking for is critical thinking. He isn't going to ask you to simply repeat what he tells you in class, you're going to have to ruminate on the subject matter.
Professor is a professional in his work ethic and is great at teaching Economics. Do not expect an easy class. Econ Development is a hard concept and the Professor does not make it any easier. Expect to read and put in a few hours a week. In all honesty he can prepare you for harder Econ courses. Might ask him for a rec letter to CSULB.
This class is difficult, but Professor Silva really cares about his students' success. The class consists of lectures and weekly discussions based on weekly articles. This class really helps prepare students for their professional lives. The exams are difficult, so I would recommend attending office hours, which is really helpful.
The material is hard, but passing is light if you are good at the discussions/reports and pay attention during the lectures. I must say that the discussions were a first for me, and helped immensely outside of class (in terms of knowledge and conversation). After four years at this school, Professor Silva is the best professor I've had.
He was honestly one of the hardest classes I have had at CSUN. Do not get discouraged in the beginning of the class because he does give you extreme amount of extra credit and is super helpful with the discussions as well as the midterm. He is literally a professor that is there to help you and wont make you feel dumb or slow.
Professor Silva is an exceptional professor in the Business and Economics department. His class composes of online and in person lectures. What I do not find suitable to me is that you need to watch pre-recording lectures before attending class or read the corresponding textbook. However, a great class environment and a great class!
Professor Beltran spends a lot of time making sure you understand the material and he really cares about your success as a student. One thing I really liked is that out of 10 quizzes, only your top 5 grades are kept. A similar practice is used with homework grades too. There are also a lot of extra credit opportunities throughout the year. 10/10!
his way of teaching just powerpoint slides from the textbook and reading it to you and just walking around the class and talking about the slides. It bored me and Also his weekly quizzes have like 8-10 answer choices for each question which was annoying but he gives decent curves. Wouldn't recommend, he should have better teaching skills.
Professor Silva forces you to watch online videos to learn the course material, functionally making this an online course. He then forces you to attend nearly pointless in-person lectures with quizzes and attendance codes. On the bright side, he is a genuinely nice and helpful professor (if you ask questions) with plenty of extra credit.
If you are willing to sit and pay attention during the lectures, you will be set for the entire class. Professor Silva is dedicated to his student's success and provides many opportunities for extra credit and additional help. His lectures are very clear, and the tests are exactly what you learn. Pay attention during lectures and you're golden.
This professor cares about all students and provides many opportunities for success like multiple extra credit chances and thoughtfully answering any questions that students may have. He also goes out of his way to find the best teaching methods that are scientifically proven to highly benefit students so they may have a high quality education.
Professor Silva is a great professor who genuinely cares about the success of his students in and outside of class. He appreciates questions and easily reachable. Make sure to pay attention during class and take advantage of the numerous extra credit opportunities he provides and you'll be set.
Professor Beltran-Silva genuinely cares for his students and takes the time to provide students with great feedback. It's important to read the syllabus and any instructions he provides carefully. Quizzes and exams (curved) can be difficult, but putting in the effort to study the material goes a long way. He is helpful and wants to see you succeed.
This class is manageable if you stay consistent. Do the extra credit—it's the key to an A! Quizzes are daily but he drops the 5 lowest. Exams are curved, which helps a lot. Attendance matters, so show up and participate.
A great professor. The lectures are very good, but he only talks about the hard parts in the reading. There is some stuff that is in the reading that he just won't get to in class, but are still on the tests. There were short quizzes everyday. A TON of extra credit. Do the work and you can get an A in the class while only getting 70% on the tests.
A great professor. However, he only talks about the hard parts in the reading. There were short quizzes everyday. He gives a lot of extra credit. Tests are heavy, so reviewing problem sets and quizzes is necessary to get over them with a high score. Ask him whatever making you confuse, it is really helpful to understand this subject.
The professor mainly cares more about making the quizzes and tests more secure than actually teaching the class. Its all self learn. everything he teaches in class isnt that useful but you could definitely get by without going to class. quiz every day and once a week homework. lots of extra credit tho. 3 exams 55 questions the quizzes are 8 questio
Take this class online if possible. It's 3 hours long and the professor uses every minute. He relies on Top Hat for homework, quizzes, and exams, which tracks location and locks screens. No tech allowed unless instructed. Teaching is unclear, he gets annoyed with questions, so you'll end up learning from the textbook.
Unless you want your life to revolve around this class, don't take him. Genuinely, for your time and sanity. Only got half a semester's worth of lectures cause EVERY WEEK we wrote reports and presented them in class (worth 50%). Grading is brutal. Must follow instructions exactly, or automatic zero. Simulates a cruel business environment
I'd skip and just take another professor if possible the material isn't concrete or concise enough, makes it difficult to understand what he's asking students during lectures. The quizzes have 8-10 different answer choices which are unnecessary.
Professor Beltran-Silva is caring and approachable. However, the teaching style is not very effective. The class relies heavily on readings, with little lecturing. Students are expected to know graphs and formulas without much explanation. Easy extra credit for attendance, but quizzes can be confusing.
Great Professor, helpful, with many opportunities for extra credit throughout the course. Show up and do the assignments and you'll do great.
There are many opportunities for extra credit, take advantage of them. Attend class, participate, and do yourself a favor by attending office hours. The professor genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. If you work hard then you'll do great!
Although the course is fairly difficult, Professor Beltran-Silva is a great professor and wants you to see you succeed. For the reports, he emphasizes attention to detail so make sure you are reading the instructions thoroughly. Also take advantage of the many extra credit opportunities. Put in the effort and you'll be succesful in the class.
Approachable and helpful professor, he understands that econ is hard and offers a lot of extra credit. There are weekly homework assignments and short quizzes, 2 midterms, and a final. Dedicate a few hours to study the material and you'll pass!
