i think he is helpful and you should take him because he is easy for english 67 therefor,i was able to pass the class right now :)
pro gomez wasnt extremely easy, but he was fair. he used the text book all the time. quizes came out of the reading in grapes of wrath. he goes over things a bit fast and doesnt really finish the lecture. although,if you're confused he will help you. he's a funny and nice guy. he is a bit picky on his essay exams so b sure 2 read each question well
He's a very fuuny teacher, and personable. I thought he was a excellent teacher and uses great discription to get peoples attenetion. Many people thought he was a hard grader, but he strictly just wants what is asked. would recommend
He was very fair with his grading. He would give you the benefit of the doubt if he saw someone trying in his class, but would not grade them differently than anyone else. He always helped if one took the time to go to his office hours or ask him to set up a different time. I would definitely recommend him.
Professor Gomez is a great teacher! His stories related to what we are learning are always interesting and help you better understand the material. if you are anti social do not take him because he loves to put us in random groups everyday. He is also really particular about his essay structure! I recommend!
He did not even have a textbook required for the class. All we did was read handouts and answer questions based on the handouts. He is a nice guy and tries to help, but the SI and him just created confusion among the students in the class. I wouldn't recommend him.
This professor is by far the best I've had he clearly explains the material and is pleasent to be around. If you fail his class you either didn't show up or didn't pay attention. He is very chill and actually teaches the material with clarity :)
He actually told me not to use this site but here I am! Great teacher, keeps class interested. Do not go to him if you do not like group work, there is group interaction EVERYDAY! He is helpful and knows what he wants on essays. His grammar lessons go a bit fast but just take notes!
Great professor! Very clear on what he expects and very helpful. Doesn't require you to buy a worthless book and teaches in a way that is easy to pay attention.
took him for english 1a and did not pass, wasnt friendly, told us to go to writting center if we wanted to progress, not my cup of tea. take him if you know your good at essays already if not wouldnt recommend him.
Wasn't very helpful, don't recommend him.
he's not helpful, I killed my self going to the writing center but still he would not grade my essays fairly.. I would not recommend this professor at all....
He is very funny, charismatic, and makes you laugh with his witty banter. However, do not let his charm fool you. He is incredibly unfair and grades terribly. He will destroy your self esteem and make yoy hate your essays you worked so hard on. If you think you're a good writer, think again. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!
It's a pretty easy class you just have to turn in your work & follow his guidelines for the papers and you should pass the class. We used a novel not a text book. He's very helpful and makes class fun
Class is solely based on one novel and a variety of handouts. You're put into groups practically every day (randomly chosen). He's very sarcastic and humorous and he makes you feel comfortable. Some complain about his essay grading, but personally I thought it was average. It's not a hard class; just turn in your work.
One of the best and memorable teacher that i ever had. He does a lot of group work, and i got stuck with people who did not do the work, but the is not the professor's fault. He is a very smart guy and has changed my perspechive on many things. If you fail his class, it is your fault, not his
Prof. Gomez has received several derogatory comments, this is my attempt to enlighten you! Yes, Gomez is very adamant about sticking to the prompt and the rubric, and yes he is most definitely challenging when it comes to grading. However, do you want to learn? He is attempting to prepare us for the "university" hello people! Gomez is a Professor.
He is very funny and provides examples we can actually relate to. Does a lot of group work and discussions.
One of Mt. Sac's finest professors. He is funny and very helpful and takes time to answer your questions and he makes the class fun. The class was a little bit difficult, but you learn from him. He is an excellent teacher.
This teacher is one of the hardest ive ever taken. He is very nice but during a summer or winter semester is almost impossible to finish. Summer of 2014 half way through there was only 6 people left in class. I suggest to not do english in short semesters due to lots of reading(at least 50-100 pages a day) and hard essays.
This professor makes you read a lot of books and he grades really hard on the essay.
very strict on essay grading
Do not mistake his passion as a negative. Yes, his class does require you to actually apply your self (this IS college). However, if you keep up with him you will learn! He makes class fun and relatable. Also, there is a lot of group class discussions so if your anti-social I do not recommend his class for you. Gomez is a great Professor.
He didn't seem to care about his students and help them improve. If a student got lower than a C on his quiz he doesn't allow them to stay in class. He says it forces students to learn but in my opinion having them miss class is far worst than failing a 10 point quiz. I wouldn't recommend him, there's better profs who emphasize on the end result.
Best English professor. Went from not knowing how to start, format essays to getting A's in all his essays. He's hilarious but really strict . Recommend for students that need that strict professor to not slack off
Pros: - Pushes you - Is there if you need help - Gives good lectures - Prepares you for university level Cons: - Tough Grader - Kicks you out of class for an hour if you fail reading quiz - Reading quiz almost every day - Puts you in discussion groups Conclusion: He is strict, but makes you a better, and more disciplined student.
Was not a big fan. His explanations of things often had vulgar analogies or comparisons that related to his personal life growing up and was mostly inappropriate for in-class discussions and sometimes didn't even relate to the topic. He can be condescending towards students should they speak their mind if it's not what he feels. Very pretentious
You will definitely pass if you conform to his opinions. There are daily quizzes to make sure you did the reading but those aren't too bad. Very pretentious, very opinionated, even got in an argument with a girl and made her cry during class because of where she worked. There was only 8 of us left at the end of the semester.
He was a really cool teacher at first but once got deeper into the semester he became rude. He doesn't help you with essays, nor does he even give you explanations as to what was wrong with your essay, also kicks you out of class for an hour if you fail a quiz, which also defeats the purpose of learning as well. he's very rude.
He's a pretty awesome professor and straight forward on what he wants. Motivated me to be a english major. TAKE HIM!
He is strict, but there's no trickery afoot. If he says to write an outline you'd better have one on time. How can he help you improve when there is nothing for him to give feedback on?
There's no mistaking this man is passionate about the topics he's interested in. Unfortunately that passion doesn't really translate into teaching. Lectures are boring and depressing. Peer reviews are a joke. You can get great help on your writing only if you go to his office hours. It says a lot that more people drop his class than pass.
Professor Gomez is a challenge. His class is not for a student who simply wants a passing grade. A student must be involved and open-minded in this class. Nevertheless, his class works wonders on critical thinking of students. Gomez is blunt but fair, and he grades everyone equally. University style professor.
Rude and inconsiderate
Papers not easy but improved writing skills due to constructive feedback. Discussions inspired critical thinking. Assigns 10-18 pgs of free reading online. Some struggle with having to print, bring the packet to class & get offended when they are excused. Learned so much, not easy an A but worth the work. Office hours for extra help if you need it.
I dropped a week before midterms in the spring. I had a 4.0 GPA Average and was not willing to mess that up because of his class. He is a good professor but I don't like the way he speaks to his students. He is super analytical!!! Every article we read was looked at with detail. If you are taking other classes, this class will not be for you.
Professor Gomez is hands down the best professor I've had. I started off the semester a little scared because he's very blunt, but he's also very clear about his expectations. If you're not willing to work, don't bother taking this class. If you ARE willing to work, you'll leave 100% prepared for another tough class, and be a better writer!
Hes cool at first but then gets insanely hard. When he gives us readings be prepared to do analysis on every single sentence. The essays are hard its not fair. This class is very intense so i highly recommend you dont take if you already have other classes. I had to withdrawal because I couldn't seem to be doing anything right. Trust me i tried.
Most days consist of group discussions with the reading that was assigned the class meeting before. Quizzes on the readings are often. Essays are really intense. Must go to the writing center if you get a bad grade. If not it affects your next essay and so on. This class is lots of critical thinking, you will go in depth with every single sentence
We had to read 3 books, along with 4-5 essays. If your looking for an "easy A" DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. If you want to learn how to write an essay at a university level then take this class; however, be prepared to work. You have to write 5 essays, completely analyze the 3 books and essays you read, and will get tested every class on the material you read.
I would never recommend him for 1A. He clearly knows English but that doesn't matter because he is a terrible teacher. He does make you feel like a moron if you dont understand the material. Like others have said you will analyze the articles given. So if you want blatant criticism with no content what so ever take him.
Don't recommend him at all! You can tell he's a smart person, but definitely not a good teacher. He gives you the schedule and what to expect up on the first day which is cool, but as the weeks go by, you're grade goes down. His grading is mostly based on essays (about 75-80%?). He's a TOUGH grader, mostly everyone got a C/D or below on essays.
Not an easy A, but a fulfilling A. His lectures are very interesting and engaging and he grades very harshly, but fairly. The best course of action is to go to his office hours for advice and critique and go from there. He comes off as intimidating, but he definitely cares about the growth of his students and he will help you.
Many people take offense to the things he says, but his attitude is what made me comfortable in the classroom. Paper are not difficult as long as you ask questions when you need help. If you are not a face to face person, he is very good at answering emails as well.
Loved the class, he incorporates humor in his lectures. He is always available to help students individually. Very polite and caring. Most of the assigned reading material is fun to read and he helps us understand it in the next class discussion. He is very organized and structured. He grades fast and with feedback comments.
He's a really cool professor to have and puts humor into his lecture. He takes the time to help any student that asks for his help but the only thing you need to know is if you procrastinate and lag on reading this is not the class for you. His grading is based heavily on how you do the essays but he gives hard but good comments on the essays.

He's an amazing teacher. He doesn't sit well with a lot of people because of his strong character but I truly feel thats what makes him. He really does care for us as students and will invest time in helping you if you truly put an effort to go to his office hours. He's funny but don't take him for an easy grade you'll have to work for it.
Unfair to students. Attempts to sound smart but all he does is reuse the same words (conducive, premise, disservice) I'm blunt so idc for his constructive criticism but no matter how much I asked for help, he'd always go around my question&never give an answer. I tried my hardest and got a D+, I took it again with different teacher&I got an A.
Why did my rating get deleted? Anyways, the class consists of reading , quizzes, & papers. He focuses too much on the reading rather than the writing (Ironically, papers are the majority of your grade). &he's a TOUGH grader. I'm not sure why he focuses so much on the literature when thats for 1C. I get the preparing idea, but teach us writing
Horrible teacher in general. In order to pass this class, you must visit him during office hours and somehow get him to incorporate his opinions in your essay. The writing center is useless because the way you write does not matter. His grading criteria is very biased. The only way to pass is to visit him during his office hours.
I took gomez for 1A and 1C and loved both classes very much. While 1C did get a tad repetitive, it was still a great environment due to the way he runs his class. He is very caring towards his students and will put in the effort for you as long as he sees you are putting in the effort for his class. He sparked my love for literature.
If you're looking for an easy A do NOT take this professor! He is very caring and will be willing to help you if you put in the work. Going to his office hours is a must and you have to put in a lot of time and effort into your papers. I learned a lot from him in 1A so I decided to take him for 1C.
He is rude & he has no filter. He gives reading assignments and every class you have to take a quiz on it. He goes over the reading in class(boring) and tells us to write an outline and essay on it without any further help or instruction. I had him go over an outline and all he told me was it was crap but he didn't help me. Don't even bother.
I took him for winter and this Professor has SO much knowledge to share. If you truly want to learn i highly recommend, you will be better prepared for Eng 1C. He is willing to always help you and is very clear and honest about his grading. I am not the best at English but he helped so much, I always recommend him.
in order to pass the class you MUST go to his office hours. There are 3 books you have to read for the course and many articles. If you do plan on taking this course, do not choose the Friday class because there's too much work to do and understand.
Great professor, but it was a little too difficult for me. I did learn a lot about essay structures and analyzing texts. My next English class was a breeze with what I know from him. Interesting class and the professor is great. If you want a challenge and leave with good knowledge, take him.
Terrible teacher in general. Do not take him if you're planning on getting an A or B in the class.
Just do the work and you'll be fine. Says the F word a lot but its funny. TAKE HIM.
He doesn't teach you how to write even though 80% of his grading is based on writing. Theres a ton of reading to do and he will quiz you on every reading. I'm naturally not a good writer so i cannot blame him for giving me the grade I have. Make sure to go to his office hours to let him critique your essays before turning in. READ READ READ!!
Make sure you participate and go to his office hours. If you put in the effort to get a good grade, he will put in the effort to help you. Most of the class consists of reading and writing essays.
If you want to do loads of work for a mediocre grade take this professor. This is basically an essay based class and he is very clear on what he wants in the world BUT the amount of work that each essay requires is insane. 90% of my class failed or dropped, however those who stay will definitely learn to master an essay
I can honestly say, his ENG 1A class was a breeze for me. The first thing he said to the class was "If you think you could get an A in this class without working hard then leave now." Naturally, I took that as a challenge and scored above an A without really trying. As long as you understand and meet his criteria, you'll be fine.
His class was based on reading what he has already assigned to read as homework so it was pretty repetitive. In order to get good grades on essays, it is mandatory to go to his office hours, which are usually packed with students so he only checks like one paragraph out of your whole essay. DONT take him. Made me feel dumb my first year of college
Its an easy class if you actually show up and put effort into it. All the people giving him bad reviews are just complaining about how much reading there is to do but its a college level class. You only read two books towards the end but the rest are just 10-20 pg articles. He quizzes you on every one but the quizzes are just true and false.
Not a fun class. If you are white I do not suggest.
I've taken Professor Gomez twice. He is available for help with the work and school/post-school advice. He is a clear grader and very accommodating. Participate and do your quizzes. Most people complaining, you do realize you're in college, right?
Do not take this class if you are planning to pass English 1c with an A or B. Gomez Only actually helps you and your grade if you setup a meeting with him or the class aid, other than that , he will assume you are not worried about your grade and give you lousy replies through email that do not help your situation. I worked, no time for meetings.
I took him when classes moved online. Every discussion on zoom was worth it because he goes into detail about the readings and it helps when you have to do the quiz on canvas. There is a final essay but as long as you participate you should be fine. Hes really cool and he made the class interesting. I would take him again for literature.
I loved Gomez! it was definitely stressful taking during the winter term because It was condensed, but he is open to hearing the student's ideas. He will make time available for you to brainstorm on essays and definitely appreciates when students participate in class. I definitely recommend taking him for English 1C!
I personally feel like the professor did a great job as an educator. He is very strict with grading, and without him, I would have never learned how to write an essay properly. Trust me, if you don't know much about essays then this professor will change that. Wasn't a big fan of him personally, but it doesn't matter, great teacher!
He is the harshed grader that I have ever had and puts an overemphasis on essays while leaving a lot of key issues and grading points out of the rubrics. He comes off as someone who is full of himself and who cares more about politics than anything. Do not take his class if you want a very educational English experience, just stress, and politics.
Took Gomez for fall semester online, you don't have to buy any books because he does his best to provide pdf copies for all materials covered, which he goes over in class. Zoom meetings are recorded, and he goes over important points in the readings pretty clearly. Participate and the essays are ezpz
I can easily say Gomez was one of the best professors at Mt. SAC. He is definitely a challenge, but it helped me grow exponentially as a writer. His feedback is always amazing and can make time for you to review previous essays.
He will teach you how to write a good essay. He is not that harsh of a grader. If you know how to write an essay then you will pass this class. I think you have to attend this class to get a good grade because he provides a lot of information and help in class.
Overall, I'd say Professor Gomez is probably one of the best English Professors at Mt Sac. If you put in effort and need help he will always take his time to help you with the essays. He is not a tough grader and he cares more about the effort you put in the class if anything. Someone can easily pass this with an A if they show effort.
He's a tough grader and he does make you work for an A. Just go to class, participate, and try to understand what he is telling you. I used to be afraid of writing essays but since all we did was write essays in that class I can easily say that I have become a better writer and critical thinker. I will definitely be taking him for 1C.
I took Professor Gomez during a winter semester and I'm a good writer,(I got A's and B's on his papers) but the prompts were ridiculous. He makes you connect texts that have seemingly nothing to do with each other. If you want a class with good, clear, reasonable prompts take a different class. Wouldnt recommend 4 bad writers at all
Gomez, in my opinion, is a hidden gem. He genuinely cares about his student and pushes them to their limits. If you need help with your writing, he is willing to meet with you outside of class to peer edit your essay. The way he explains his lecture makes it very enjoyable. Don't let the rating discourage you from taking him! He is amazing.
I took this course during winter and the amount of schoolwork was excessive. Winter is 6 weeks so I knew it would be fast paced but I didn't expect it would be this extreme. Professor Gomez is a helpful teacher though. Ask for help if you need it because he is truly there for students. And do the meetings with the TC. He gives extra credit for that
Gomez is a little rough around the edges in his style of communicating with his students. I feel this class would be more enjoyable for a manly, more political, student audience. You definitely have to work hard for your grade, which is an honest thing to do. Good luck.
Professor Gomez overall is a good professor. He is pretty clear with his instructions but he will push you to do your best in the class. There's a lot of research involved so be prepared for that. He is also pretty strict with how he grades, so if you wanna pass email him and ask him questions as to how to improve your writing.
For the asynchronous class, you must watch 4-5 lectures a week. Each lecture is over 2 hours long.Extremely unprofessional. He curses during recorded Zoom lectures and leaves unhelpful, snarky comments in emails and when grading your papers. Pickiest and toughest grader I've ever had. Extremely disorganized course structure. Kudos to his TA though.
This professor is extremely unprofessional and unjust. He finds the smallest things to critique and leaves rude remarks in the comments of your submission. I tried my hardest in this class and he decided to fail me for adding 1 too many sources. Where he claims he reiterated multiple times to not include too many
He is very tough grader and I would put hours into writing the final draft of the essay to not get a very good score. Also some of his prompts didn't make much sense which made the essays even harder to write. If you're looking to improve your writing then I would choose this professor, but otherwise avoid him.
SUPERRRR awesome! He is funny and also only does readings with meaning. There is no busy work, everything you do is in preparation for essays. I took him for 1A AND 1C, he lets you turn in essays late as long as you turn it in before the next essay is due. He lets you out early everyday, during this time he is available for individual help.
his essays were very confusing, I went to seek help and his TA was being rude to me for no reason. DO NOT TAKE HIM PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avoid at all cost. Lots of reading and research. Nit picker. Does not give feedback on Rough Draft then surprises you with nits on Final Draft, then deducts heavy points. I spent 4X more time than my other tough classes. I've been praying everyday that I pass his class. VERY VERY TOUGH GRADER.
Prof. Gomez has clear grading criteria and maintains a nearly stoic demeanor in his Zoom lectures. He is supportive and passionate about teaching his students to write college essays according to the most current MLA standards. Despite finding the reading material arduous, I learned how to write several types of essays that are vital in college.
DON'T TAKE HIM, PLEASE!!!!!! he is picky for no reason, and his essays were confusing, I went to his TA for help and he was rude to me for no reason like if you didn't want to help why did you become a TA in the first place.
Took him for 1A & 1C. For 1A, I recommend. 1C, I STRONGLY DO NOT. Far too much reading for a class that isn't honors. I am a strong writer, so I did well. If you aren't, don't take him for 1C. Readings are interesting and worthwhile - technology/police/politics based but they're to get you to understand America. Just thought that he crammed it all.
If you want to learn how to write well take his class. If you want an easy A, look somewhere else. Gomez is an amazing professor.
Gomez was an enjoyable person but not an enjoyable teacher. He did help you prepare well for the essays but a lot of the people in my class had very minimal experience with writing and found all the essays terrible. More than half my class dropped the course because of how terrible it was.
Worst professor I've ever met. Don't take his class unless you have English essay experience. He doesn't give useful comments for online classes, have to meet with him in person. Require a lot of readings and have to be perfect every time.
If you are not a confident writer, this is not the class for you. Gomez is incredibly nitpicky, does not give you any corrections or insights on your rough drafts so you assume its decent until you turn in your final draft and all of a sudden, he has feedback for you, and he DEDUCTS HEAVY POINTS. The TA is not as useful as you think as well.
If you want to improve your writing ability take this class. But if you want an easy A dont. Assigns short readings with an essay prompt. Personally found the class very easy, but know alot of others in the class didnt. I got a 72 on the first writing, and still got a 94. Put in the work and youll get the grade. Hes always happy to help, just ask.
He is an easy C but if you are looking for an easy A don't take his class. If he is your only option make sure to meet with him for your rough draft. Also even tho attendance isn't mandatory you will regret it if you don't show up. But if you do all the homework and turn in all the essays it's almost a guarantee C.
Gomez's class had a steep learning curve, but with the help of resources like Unstuckstudy, I was able to navigate the extensive reading and challenging essay requirements. While his grading was strict, I gained valuable college-level writing skills.
Do not take him. Very picky grader, doesn't give any feedback on the rough drafts and then grades very harshly. I do not recommend taking his class, take any other professor.
Genuinely, If i could give him a 0 I would. Rude, and disrespectful. He is inconsiderate with any personal matters. Do not take him! Me and 25 individuals would agree with me on this.
Definitely would not recommend. I should've gone on here before signing up for his class. I tried to explain to him that English was my worst subject and after years of not attending a school setting. I advised him that I would have trouble and would need help, but all he said was "you chose to take this class." I hope the Dr gets compensated well.
I completely failed the first essay but his first paper didn't count toward the overall grade. 99% of the time people who failed the class often - didn't go to office hours - didn't follow the writing rubric he provided - had winged every essay - don't know how to analyze quotes (when it's an analysis essay) - need their hand held
Don't take, I'm saving you guys right now. He is a tough grader , doesn't care about your situations, he's no help and his “tutor” isn't either. Gives you half credit if one little thing on your work isn't correct, gives no help feedback. Reason my grade was so low is because of the way he graded my assignments.
Professor Gomez is approachable and supportive. He replies to emails quickly, making communication easy. While he's a fair grader, he expects more from essays. Assignments build toward them, so effort pays off. He truly cares about student success and is an encouraging, kind and helpful professor overall. I highly recommend taking his class!
Professor Gomez is approachable and supportive. He replies to emails quickly, making communication easy. While he's a fair grader, he expects more from essays. Assignments build toward them, so effort pays off. He truly cares about student success and is encouraging throughout. A kind and helpful professor overall!
Professor Gomez talks down to students and comes off smug and condescending, rather than helpful. His communication feels unprofessional, and the class is lecture-heavy with long video content (10 mins to over an hour) and a ton of writing. Not a very supportive learning environment, especially for new college students.
A LOT OF ESSAYS RIGHT AFTER ANOTHER.
Literally the worst professor ever. His grading is SO bad. Hes way too strict and will fail you for the smallest things. I'm pretty good at writing and he made me feel like I hadn't written anything in 10 years. Would never take him again!
