The most difficult marker @ KUC. I find him nice enough, personally; smart guy, has very high expectations. If U don't plan on CHALLENGING yourself, or if U act like a kid in class, DO NOT TAKE HIM. U'll fail. Period.

Do not take him for starters. He is very strict about the written answers, and the mutiple choice answers can include; all, two of the above(you have to actually list the two), and none, in the same question. His teaching is okay, though.
Do not take a class with Marino. Take this class with Ian Ross in Richmond. Marino's class is brutal.

He is terrible. I mean Crim is suppose to be a class to help your GPA not bring it crashing down. His class is way toooooo difficult DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
unfortunately franco walks around with a stick up his a** and therefore doesn't quite understand the concept of "TEACHING". The material is not hard but he makes it difficult to unerstand and won't even help you.
i think Kwantlen keeps him to make the $, if you fail or get below a C you have to take it over again, its all a conspiracy. It seems like he is taking his personal frustrations out on us innocent students! he just needs to get laid:)
I don't think many students get it. We aren't here for a vacation. Studying is work. This instructor was funny, insightful & very helpful. I would take his class again in a heartbeat. One of the best teachers I've ever had.

I can't believe I survived this class. Way above first year. I do not agree with the stupid comment made by another poster here that Crim is to boost up your GPA....but man Marino will knock it down!

He tests were a little difficult, I don't think he was that bad, however. He was a nice guy and pretty helpful. I would take his class again, he knows what he's talking about.
Do not take his class! His tests are INCREDIBLY difficult, if you don't answer his questions, he gets mad. LOTS of readings are expected, they are on the tests. Boring class. I advise you to choose another teacher.

Franco Marino is a genius. If you are serious about school and you are up for a challenge, he will be the best teacher you could ever have. Don't take him if you just want to have fun, you will die a horrible, slow death.

Horrible. Exams are incredibly difficult. If you do horribly on them, it is hard to get a good grade in the class. There are no other assignments to boost grades. He gets mad when you don't answer a question, and then gets mad when you answer it wrong.

Excellent teacher if you do your work. He makes things extremely clear and goes over stuff if you ask. He's not there to fool around, so if you're not serious about your classes than stop wasting his, and the rest of our time.

If you ACTUALLY want to learn something and aren't looking for an easy grade, than I suggest you take up the challenge of having a class with Marino. I've never had less than an A in his class. If it were possible, I would take every single class with this guy. He knows what he's doing and if you're willing to learn, he will help.
His teaching style is this: sink or swim. His exams are the longest and hardest I've ever written and I'm a straight A student. I worked my butt off just to prove to him that I'm not an idiot and got an A. Do not take this class if you just plan to BS your way through. Take it if you actually want to learn something.
I had to drop the class to take the w rather than the F, and now repeating it with another prof. I'm a smart guy, and have never had to use the entire exam period to finish an exam before, let alone NOT Finish one in the allotted time. Also, the text was crap, being needlessly complex and extremly confusing. Don't be sick and miss classes. gl

Franco is tough. Take his class to learn but be prepared to WORK for your grade. Of my 4 courses, I spent the MOST time studying for this class, yet my mark did not reflect that. He's not student-friendly, but he is fair in my opinion. Students complain about not being able to dispute marks, but he gives a lot of bonus marks too. You've been warned

Man, this guy was an ass! He does have a huge ego, I mean huge! His tests are ridiculously hard and the questions on them do not relate to anything from his notes nor textbook. I would recommend to avoid this guy if its' your first year. But if you have no choice, good luck. Your GPA is really going to suffer.

Absolutely awful professor. I withdrew from the course. I have a 3.4 GPA. I loved going to school until I enrolled in Marino's insane course. Now that I've dropped it I enjoy myself at school again. Save your money and time and effort.
I had read all the comments about him after I enrolled. He is SUPER tough. I ended up getting an A but only because I wrote down almost EVERYTHING he said in class. I would also take notes on the textbook at least two weeks before the test. If you can choose another teacher instead, do so!
I have attended Kwantlen for over three years, this man made us feel stupid, one girl actually cried in class. Our frustration level was so high i just stopped going i couldnt do anything else to save my sanity, it was so bad. Even didnt show on an exam day , just all wrong.

Marino is TOUGH. Take notes efficiently and study hard. There's alot of info and u need to go to every class and pay attention. ask and he'll help. study study study. I got an A and didn't put any extra effort into this class. You'll learn alot if you give him a chance. Exam questions are tricky and u need to know what he is actually asking
I loved this class and prof. Interesting lectures, no assignments (just unit tests.. not even a cumulative final exam). Attendance is important because he tests basically on what he talks about in his lecture. Entertaining but not very interactive which i enjoyed. I got an A by just listening in class and taking notes.

Franco is the worst teacher ever!! If you have to take a stats class, take it with nathalie gagnon, she actually teaches you stats and is very helpful. Franco does not explain anything and if you do not understand, he does not offer any useful help. To start there was about 20 ppl in my class and it dropped to 12 and about 8 ppl failed! Horrible!!

Lots to learn in this class so you cant blame him for being boring and dragging his classes on and on with pages and pages of notes. Franco started off on a bad foot....however as the semester progressed the insults ceased and instead patience was used . He LOVES his stuff, there is no doubt about that...and you can tell because he is so passionate in his teaching. Prepare to work hard, this is not an easy topic.

This guy is very hard ,he treat the first year students like Phd students. he gave us 140 multiple choice questions in the mid term plus 2 case studies. it was unbelievable that he gave us only 2 hours to complete this mid term. The same pattern exam he gave us in the final. HE is very very very hard and not helpful. Avoid Him !
he pretty much just pours the information on you and then leaves it to you to apply it to very complex cases that he hands out. he expects phd level performance from first year students and should stop teaching. on a side note, he acts like he is the smartest person in the world and he WIL make you feel extremly stupid. avoid at all cost.

He is very unfair. Does not know how to teach the course material in clear fashion. He makes the material sound more complicated than it really is. I never understood him, and when i took the same course with someone else, it was a piece of cake. He can't teach students at all. On top of this, he is very rude and arrogant.

You will learn alot in his classes as they are very engaging and he knows his stuff... that being said he prides himself on his hard tests and needs to scale them all in order to have a class average over 50%.
He was very difficult, Teaching wise he had good examples of what he was teaching. taking notes was difficult because they were moreover what he was saying rather than what is shown on the projector for the tests. For this reason, his tests are about "making connections." Connections that are missed because we dont know what to write down.

There is a reason why his classes are always the last to fill up and its unfortunate for those with late registration times. It is almost as if teaching is just a side job (to his academic research) and he dreads it. He belittles his students and just assumes everyone is unintelligent. You can pass his class but you will have to work hard for it.
You have to come to class, pay VERY CLOSE attention to what HE SAYS and not what he writes on the projector or board. Moreover, you have to make connections in your brain and tie them with what he is presenting. For first year students, I would recommend you stay away from him. He takes 4-5 days to reply to emails and rushes lectures to stick to his syllabus so you have to learn a lot of stuff on your own. Is not clear on the criteria for assignments, especially the take home assignment worth 25%. Super tough exam. Half my class dropped with a W. Avoid him at all costs

the only thing i learned in this class was a phrase in a different language which is " SALA PAN CHODA, PAN DI LUN AYDI" which means law is essential because is governs the state.
I really loved Franco's class. He is extremely intelligent and has high expectations, and why shouldn't he? This is supposed to be higher education. Take notes, write down everything he says. Read the assigned readings in the text. He was very helpful during office hours. Work hard for him and you will be successful.
His tests are very difficult and he makes you memorize all the formulas for stats. more than half my class has dropped. He has provided absolutely no criteria for our take home project and has given no due date and only told us about it in november. unfortunately it seems there is no alternative to him.
He's not that bad - stats is hard, and he stresses out when it seems the class isn't trying/passing. To pass: Don't leave getting your topic approved to the last minute, avoid emailing - go to office hours instead, & READ before class so you're not lost. Tests are long and hard but he'll adjust scores if warranted. WORK HARD this isn't high school!
You have to memorize formulas for stats, but it's manageable. Study lots, don't cram. Read the chapter before class, and see him in his office hours if you need help - i did, and he was really helpful. Won't give criteria for assignment until late in semester, but it's very detailed and quick to do. No need to drop the course, just work hard! :)
WORST INSTRUCTOR EVER FOR FIRST YEAR! Put me off Crim all together! After four years at Kwantlen, I STILL think he was the worst teacher
he is very hard marker! exams are very hard.but his teaching is the best, and he always give you extra points.
Because of his reputation it was very intimidating to take a class with Franco. However, I think that if you take notes, pay attention to his lecture, and go to class it really wasn't that difficult. He is really intelligent and you'll learn a lot.
Extremely hard teacher and was convinced I would fail his class but to my surprise I did alright. His tests are very difficult however they teach you a lot and Franco himself teaches you the proper way of studying and learning. I've gained a lot from taking his class.
Worst teacher ever. Half the class failed. Recommend taking 1208 with another teacher.
Franco's teaching method is definitely not like any other traditional prof's out there. The pace of the course is fast, the material is difficult, and when you don't know the right question to ask, it makes this course even more confusing. Tests are broke down to 3 parts, one is done you can't go back to the other. Would not recommend to students.
Franco is a GPA Killer. I am a A- average student and i got a D in this course. When I went in for extra help I was told that he would not repeat anything that was said in his lectures. I would not recommend this prof at all.
Absolutely horrible. Within the first 5 days he lost half the class. He is distracted easily, unwilling to change his point of view and unwilling to accommodate for different students. Even after he caught out WHOLE class talking about him after a quiz. He also had to take questions off quizzes frequently
-good lecturer BUT no powerpoints,gives surprise quizzes whenever he feels like, EXTREMELY difficult tests,& you wont have enough time60/more mc,10/more open- ended answers(more like paragraph question)and sometimes an essay)in 2&half hours.Avg test percent is between 20-65%.YOU WILL FAIL, SAVE YOUR MONEY, SAVE A LIFE, THE APOCALYPSE IS COMING.
WORST PROF I HAVE HAD SO FAR!!!! i would NEVER recommend him to any student in their first year! He was NOT helpful even though he clearly says "come to my office im here to help". I went for help and he discouraged me and i came out more confused and mad! Not so nice upfront. AND HARD TESTS!!! Spare yourself and take this with another prof!:(
I'm not lying when I say that I had to work my butt off to get a good grade in this class. He is clear and super passionate about Criminology; be prepared to study HARD for exams! Franco's class is very interesting and fun but involves a lot of legwork. I recommend him only if you are a dedicated student, not just looking for an easy GPA booster.
Very difficult professor. You MUST study hard for this course as he treats you like you're going to Harvard for a law degree. I don't recommend this professor if you are lazy or for a GPA boost. That said, even the students that studied really hard for this course barely passed the midterms. The material is easy - the tests are not.
Franco is a hard teacher everyone knows that but if you work hard and attend every class you will do well. Attend his office hours as he is more than willing to help. Do not take this class if you are lazy cause you will fail. Franco's goal is to teach you something and he does.
Honestly this guy is a hard prof. Definitely not an easy class however if you work hard it's for sure passable with a good grade. Franco is really passionate about the field and really intelligent, he's a great lecturer and is very helpful, however is exams are his downfall
Absolutely worst professor Kwantlen could have hired and wasted money on. Very insecure man and lashes out on his students. I would never want to even cross paths with this man again.
Very degrading toward his students. Every time I went to this class I felt stupid because of the way he spoke to us.
I took this class without knowing what I was getting myself into, I knew by looking at Franco on day one that something was going to happen and it did... He tested the tests in this class like we were in law school, he expects you to know every one bit word of detail from lectures, notes, and anything else. IWillNeverTakeAnyOfHisClassesAgain.
A teacher who treats students like idiots if they dont memorize every word in the textbook chapter from reading it for a week. Plans too much to do in a term abd forces students to make up lost time from that on their own. Tests are so hard he had too scale them by 25%. His grading practice is also highly innaccurate and constantly changing. AVOID
Definitely would not recommend him for first years. Very difficult tests and there is often not enough time to complete. He treats his students like idiots and is rude and arrogant. Most students take his course as a last resort and don't know what they're getting themselves into. Pls, if you don't wanna fail this course don't take this prof
Franco Marino was very strict with his class policies and was very quick to get to work. His lectures were very dense and readings are mandatory or he will get upset. His marking criteria is insane and very in depth. If you arnt ready to put in a min of 2 3 hours a week of work for this one class don't bother.
He is just hard, hard rules, hard readings, hard exams. If you cant put yourself for a good 2-3 hours hardass study, dead serious dont bother.
Gives pop-quizzes and assigns lots of reading. Hard tests. Gives very good lectures though. If you ask him a question and you're even slightly incorrect he'll tear you apart.
Hard test and in quiz he want exactly same words he taught in lecture or are in book.
Honestly, he is one of the best instructors in KPU. Yes, he is very strict with rules and readings; but the same time I learned tons of stuff. Yes, he is very straightforward with his opinions; but it does not mean that he is rude. On the contrary, he is there to answer students' questions with great patience and clarity.
He's okay, pretty straightforward but I don't really recommend him. We didn't have a textbook just a bunch of links he gave us to read. He made me feel really stupid for asking simple questions. All I can say is take at your own risk
Franco Marino is a tough, but fair professor. He is upfront from day one that he will require perfect attendance and a large amount of reading to succeed in his class. If you're up to the challenge you will learn a TON during a semester with Dr. Marino, but like most things in life, you will only get back what you put in.

THE WORST PROF! He makes the class way harder than it is. Complicates all the ideas. He gives way too many readings as if that is the only class you are taking and nothing else in your life matters. He is not a very nice person in general. His tests are equal to death. His class ruined my GPA even though the content for the course was simple.
The man is bitter and sucks the life out an interesting subject. He plays mind games instead of teaching. Our tuition pay his salary and I do not appreciate his psychopathic teaching style. Drop the games Franco. Listen to these reviews and do not bother taking his classes. Unless you want to study a narcissistic bitter man.
By the end of the term only 5 Students left from 30. Worst Prof ever. I had a panic attack in his Final exam and he told me to suck it up and ended up failing me. I worked my ass off and utilized a tutor, study group and tutorials with Franco. WORST PROF EVER. DONT TAKE THE CLASS WITH HIM!!!!!
I am going to be transferring from Kwantlen to finish my Criminology degree. The demand for classes is too high and we are left with horrible teachers like Franco. I do not understand why this institution allows this individual to continue teaching. He is just mean to students, and seems to enjoy it! Disrespectful, downright rude. AVOID PLEASE.

franco marino is the worst professor I've ever had! his tests are a bundle of written paragraphs! literally all 20 questions has to be answered in the form of a paragraph! and he provides no criteria sheet in preparation for his tests! and his notes are useless can't really study from it..
This guy is freaking horrible! I'm 2 months into the class and I'm already failing. I want to withdraw but I don't want to loose money. His teaching method is no goodhe doesn't have any powerpoints with his lectures and it's so hard to follow what he says. His lectures & the textbook literally have no parallel. & he's the only prof who teaches 2331
Worst professor ever! Started out with a full class with him. 2months later there's only 8 students left in the class. He's very discouraging. Doesn't explain assignments AT ALL.

Normally an A student and I failed this class. There is no way to win with this guy. He has an absolute disdain for students. Even if you need this class do not take it with him. If you still do after reading all of these reviews, well god help you, you'll need it. Prepare to be abused.

Read absolutely everything he gives you; handouts, online readings & textbook material. Memorize EVERYTHING. His exam questions are open ended & his expectations for the answers SO arbitrary, it will be hard to pass. He curves all exams because majority fail. He is rude, disrespectful & will make sure you know how incompetent YOU are. Good luck :(
he gives the hardest tests ever! and they're all open ended questions.. prepare to fail his tests because he gives you 3 packages to do part a, b, and c except for part c which is multiple choice questions around 70 questions and he doesnt give part c to you unless u finished a and b. if u fail his tests u fail the class since there's only 1 assign
Has unrealistic expectations and is not flexible or considerate of student lives. Course material and assignments are given as if you are only taking his course and dedicating your entire life to his class. Also changes schedule As well, I had a grandfather that passed away and he demanded the death certificate AND the funeral schedule as "proof".
He's an awesome professor when it comes to the lectures, the lectures were very interesting and easy to listen to. But there is no home work only exams (5 exams to be exact) and they are based both off the lectures and the readings so I suggest not to skip class and to keep up on the readings.
If you want to do well, make sure you do not skip any class,takes notes and don't be afraid to ask questions. His lectures weren't boring, but actually easy to listen too. Some people may think he is awful, but as long as you don't fall behind, you will do well.

He doesnt know how to deal with students and in the class of allmost 60 student didnt even pass a single one. Most student were so depressed that they didnt even came for final exam
This man has issues. Why do students keep willingly put their GPA's on the line with guy? Strong warning: do not sign up for his classes. Save your trouble and wait a semester. It's simply not worth the mental energy trying to pass his class.

This guy makes a first year criminology class into some sort of Harvard Law school class. His tests are just full of open ended questions. His tests are way harder than they need to be. Avoid this guy.
He seems like a nice guy but he is a HORRIBLE teacher. 5 exams, 1 project, irrelevant lectures that come with mandatory attendance. If you want to teach yourself the textbook and then be tested on obscure parts of the chapters, Marino is your guy. If you're in the mood to have your GPA, mental health, and patience lowered, take his class.
Really awesome, very knowledgeable instructor. VERY difficult so I wouldn't recommend unless you're willing to work for it, but if you're driven and passionate about Crim I 100% recommend. If you don't come to class and don't read the textbook you probably won't pass but definitely worth the time if you do!
Franco's class overall, can be a challenging course as his teaching delivery can be complex and sophisticated. However, I came in during his office hours to get help and read the textbook daily and repeated reading the chapters 2-3 times. Once you become friends with the prof and get to know him, he will give you good grades! Great semester!
You have to put in the effort, but you'll do very well if you do the readings! People who don't like him generally just aren't willing to put in the work. A great teacher and available to help you outside class
Never take him people. He is a horrible instructor. Dont even listen to students about their problems. He preferred to ignore you, if you have any questions.
Franco seems like a good professor but he doesnt know how to teach properly. His lectures are dry and boring. Get ready to do 3 cumulative exams, 2 take home assignments & 1 m/c exam. He doesnt explain how he wants the take home assignments done properly, nor does he talk about them in class, he emails them to you. He comes off as rude sometimes.
I found he knew his work well and delivered good lectures. I didnt like how he spoke to students - he came off condescending & rude. I found his grading to be nonsensical and unfair. Would not recommend.
Franco is the best instructor i found at kwantlen. His lectures are amazing. Youll have to put a lot of effort and do the readings before hand.
Franco knows his stuff, but he doesn't know how to teach in a way that doesn't further complicate it. 1208 is a hard class to begin with and the exams and assignments are much much harder than what is practiced in class. For 1208, do yourself a favour and avoid taking this class unless it is with a well rated prof.

Get ready to cry taking this class, Franco makes you feel stupid. For a 1100 class- I would not suggest a student who may have ANY type of anxiety take this class. I studied hours upon hours and still had to withdraw after the mid-term. Save yourself the sadness/stress/anxiety/time and take it with another professor. PLEASE
This is my second class with him. He is so knowledgable I thought I would learn a lot... BUT.... HE LITERALLY WENT OVER THE EXAM WITH THE CLASS AND LAUGHED SAYING HE KNEW WE WOULDN'T GET THE ANSWER RIGHT BUT WANTED TO SEE WHAT WE WOULD SAY... It's not impossible to pass with a B but you won't get the grade you deserve no matte how much you study.
He is possibly the worst prof at kpu. One of the hardest markers, I've had. Do not take him trust me, worst decision I've made!
The subjects we discussed isn't supposed be rocket science. Somehow he made it seem like that tho. Best to not answer questions in his class as if your not percised on word for word with the correct answer, you won't be right.
He's a tough, pragmatic professor but only because he wants his students to really understand the profound concepts in the course. He makes you think deep about the information he gives you and on top of that his lectures are interesting and speaks with the passion. Warning though, his tone changes when he lectures and it catches people off guard.
This is the only class Ive ever had to drop out of. No matter how much you study, he makes the material hard to understand by complicating things. When he ask the class a question, beware and dont volunteer to answer, if you get it wrong, he will make you feel stupid. My academic confidence really plummeted taking this class.
I'm paraphrasing ... "okay class, I'm gonna lecture for an hour about irrelevant things and then you're gonna go home and memorize the text book and then next class there's a test worth 1/2 your grade but it's on nothing in the lecture or the textbook and you fail" ...
