Very nice and preaches to the class. Its his way or the highway.
O my God!!!! If you a weak person don't take his class because you are going to drop thiss class faster that you registered... You have to be strong person to deal with him. He has a short temper. But you can learn a lot!!!!!
First day, he was intimidating. I was sure to drop but i stuck threw it. No Lying, he is very hot tempered and strict, but he pounds the course work into your head and keeps you on your toes, you learn so much..just dont get on his bad side.

He is crazy! He extremely mean as well. I feel like**** in his class. i hope he is retiring sonn. If u don't want to be the next victim, absolutely don't take him!
This Prof. really makes you feel like you are the worst student ever. But if you do the HW and the reading he becomes the best Prof. ever. My recommendation to you is, if you have a weak personality. DO NOT take his class, But otherwise take him.
Cant complain, hey atleast students in his class dont have to write long term papers. he is good at grading also.
damn.. he is good yo.
the worst of the worst. Don't ever take his class, very boring
worst prof ever - told me to shut up after I answered a question incorrectly.
A straight out ****. I've met and learned from great professors who are strict and to the point, but this guy is 60% hot air & 40% arrogance. He spends too much time talking about himself and the unknown books he's published.
Pompous idiot

Oh... worst professor ever, end up dropping class. There were only half students left anyway. I have no idea about what to prepare at all before midterm. No idea what he is talking about. Don't choose him even no calss fit your schedule. Oh, no essay for LTT class. a joke?
Ok, he might not be the nicest, but he teaches. and the students, at least the ones he didn't scare off, LEARN. If you do your work, it's an A. The people that left bad comments are the ones that were failing his class anyway. I won't lie- the dude is very challenging.
I LOVE this guy. He's very difficult in the beginning, he hates weak students. He just wants you to get a really good grade. He'll tell you what you did wrong on your test, fix it, and not mark you wrong. Take him if you want to learn Italian. Got an A (worked real hard for it)
If you want to be offended and abused by a professor, take this guy.
hes a pretty tough teacher but he not a bad guy. you gotta study and do a lot of homework but you learn the stuff well.
He doesn't like to work. that is why he scares student, so he doesn't have to grade too much paper. He is very arrogant. He thinks he is the best italian professor. He doesn't motivate students, he makes them feel stupid.
His pronounciation and grammar are horrible. He claims to speak several language (namely French), but once a French student spoke to him in French and all he said was, "I don't understand your accent." Go figure.
I just love the guy. The best professor ever, because he really makes you study and learn something. The class is not easy, since you have to do your homework and study every week. However, for those who really want to learn Italian, he is the best choice. I got an A.
His personality is not easy, but he's a great teacher. If you don't want a lot of homework, don't take his class. He is strict about studying and assignments. Do it and you will learn. He is very helpful during tests. I wouldn't call it an easy A, but if you do what he wants you'll get one.

Can never understand why a person who can't even speak English is teaching it for a living. Unbelievably boring. Rude. And the worst part is, he is not funny, but tries to be, so it only magnifies how hard he is trying to be funny. It's pathetic.
yall need to stop hating you came to school to learn not to play around lisen folks the man is good just listen when he talks and take good notes and all you have to do is do the readings. Do that and you will be fine. Also may sure that you attend class on time and ask alot of questions. Then he will make the class go by fast cause he talks alo
Bring a pillow.
First, the one below needs to learn how to spell before s/he writes another review. This professor is weird. He makes you feel like crap for no reason. Comes late every time while being strict about punctuality. He enjoys reading passages in English and French in broken accent to give ppl the creeps. Worst of all, he is incredibly rude.
He doesn respect student at all, mandatory attendance, one midterm one class presentation and one final, doesn say anything about test, tests are hard, I'm a 3.8 GPA and didn pass the midterm but i worked my ass of 4 presentation and final and ended up with A-. NOT RECOMENDED
For midterm know everything that he spoke about in class, and make sure you can identify each poem given just two lines of it. He doesn't want any creative analysis, just make sure you can repeat what he said. A bulk of the final was identifying the poems (15 of them). My oral presentation lasted 50 min, and he spoke for about 40 of them.
As long as you take notes and read the required text, his class is fairly easy. Just remember to take plenty of notes.
Heh, I enjoyed this class. Zangrilli is very hard, very strict, but if you pay attention you'll get an A. At the start of the semester his personality alone wanted me to drop the course, but he mellows towards the middle of the semester and the end. Mid terms were hard, but if you study you'll do fine. Want a challenge? TAKE HIM!!!
very pasionated about literature. too passionate to yell out his opinions.never listen to/accept students' views. a lot of notes and reading r good for the test. good luck if u have to take his class
As long as you take plenty of notes and read the required text, this class is a breeze. Prof. Zangrilli really knows his literature and enjoys teaching this class. I would highly recommend this class for someone who's actually interested in learning about literature.
He is not hard and easy, but boring. Notes requires even trifling characters for tests. He is not an American so his pronouncing is awful whenever he said, it's very difficult understand. If you'r an international student, you shouldn't take him. Never expect question of tests? he gives just 2 lines each poems and answering poets or titles. Bad!!
He can't teach and he doesn't like it! His classes are torture, if you don't want to spend more than 1 hour listening to how intelligent he is and be screamed at like a 2-year-old stay away from his class. Hard grader, doesn't explain... A TOTAL NIGTHMARE! BAD BAD TEACHER! HE REALLY SUCKS!!!!!
I never expected that someone without the slightest command of the English language would be courageous enough to try to teach English literature, of all things. It is one thing to succeed in doing that; but it is quite another to fail miserably, as it is the case with this professor's class. DO NOT TAKE!!!
His class was not hard, but his test was not easy. easy get a good grade if you study. his pronounce was not perfect, so if you are international student, you will listen carefully. I know one of the students this place. The person got a good grade even if the person said "his prononciation was so bad"
If you would like to keep your interest in Literature, AVOID him. If you would like to hear clear, good English, AVOID him. If you would like to get an inpiring class, AVOID him. Need I say more?!
I changed my minor because I could not stand him. Not only a Bad professor, he is also mean. I have italian background i have been in Italy more than 7 times and he thinks that he knows all about it, but he doesn`t and be carefull if you dare to contradict him. Terrible experience. Nobody in my class liked him. Not even one person..so just imagine.
Despite what they say, this guy is a good teacher. Just make sure u read the book, participate in his class and you'll be alright. The poems are a little tough, but 1 test, 1 presentation and tha Final. I got an A- so I'm not hating.
He is a great professor and very knowledgeable, he is a very bright and smart guy...Poems and readings are a little complicated but he explains everything in class...He makes you think critically, so if you like to think take him...I got an A!!!!
For those of you asking why this guy is teaching English Literature while he is not a native speaker: because it's Literature!!! You are nothing but ignorants who attend college just so you can get a job. How many books have you read in your life?(besides Dan Brown lol). How many languages do you speak? Excellent professor!!!
Love him or hate him, the man knows his literature. English isn't his mother tongue BUT he speaks it along with one or two more languages! He is a tough Professor and I have not agreed with him all the time. Difference is I supported my points of view intelligently and I got an A. So if you contradict him be smart and respectful about it.
This Guy rocks.
He might be good with Literature, but he cannot teach Italian at all. I'm Italian; I speak Italian. But this guy makes the class way more difficult than it has to be. He shouts at students, he puts student on the spot, and he intimidates us. He made me hate the language.
If you take this prof, you would be falling asleep because he DOES NOT let you talk. He is a jerk: he is mean for no reason, he puts you down, he thinks he is GOD because he speaks 2 other languages, he loves talking about Italy, which is, according to him the, oldest country with the longest history (?!). Don't take.
If you enjoyed a class with a jerk as the professor, take him. People either hate him or love him. But way way more people hate him than love him. Ask around and you would probably get the same review. Save yourself the trouble and avoid him.
To pass his class with an A, I studied ALOT. Was always prepared and always did his homework. Once you do that, you will forever be on his good side and he will go out of his way to help you.
This professor is extremely hard. And very disrespectfuk towards students. Not a structed learning environment. Loads of HW and moves very quickly. Try to avoid if possible.
This Professor is very Arrogant, And He can barely speak English. He Thinks he knows it all and Loves talking about How he Didn't do Construction like his parents and how he's educated and they are envious of him. Bunch of Bullshit. He's the Worse, If you like him you're crazy and a kiss ass.
Zangrilli is an amazing professor for students who want to learn. Yes, he does give a lot of homework, get over it, it's called college. He dislikes lazy students who waste the class's time. It is not an easy A, but you will learn more in his class than any other. I highly recommend him to serious and mature students.
It is like you say in Italian: "Un professore molto antipatico.", but when I say molto means A LOT. You have to be a master of diplomacy. Take his insults also if you don't mind, it's OK? I believe professors don't need to be rude in order to be considered a good professor, so he is not a good professor.
I dont know why everyone is bashing him! Hes a great professor! Yes, he gives a lot of hw, an hr or two to complete tops. His tests arent that hard if you just study and what you study can just be the hw. 3 tests, including midterm & final. There are wayyyy harder professors and I know it, he is not harsh to students,jokes-sure, cmon grow up.
he really knows italian? i don't thinkso.
I was hot and cold with this class. It made me think alot and although I did not agree with his points of view and was frustrated with him I enjoyed the class. He likes small classes and can come off intimidating but really if you just attend all classes and take good notes its an easy B. He only gives a midterm and final which I found very doable.
no way
He is a good prof. Gives a lot of HW, like 45 min a day, but its very helpful. He is a harsh grader. if he catches you not doing the hw, thats 4 points off your FINAL grade. 2 midterms and a final. The exams are easy if you do the HW. i really like him. he is a good and fair teacher. just do what he asks(which is a lot), and you'll do well.
he is amazing... truly inspirational. just be extremely attentive... ask a lot of questions, speak out... and he also likes an occasional challenge so dont be afraid to speak ur mind, it will probably be in ur benefit
Yes, he knows Italian. But he is also Italian. I took the class because I had to. I got an A because I knew Italian already. He is not patient and his method of teaching is very inefficient. I felt bad for the other students because they were struggling and he was not helpful at all. It's impossible to communicate with him. He is a very stubborn.
He can be quite rude to his students and very condescending. He will embarrass you in class at every opportunity especially if you do not do the homework or if don't do a portion of it. His exams are pretty fair and short but the class gave me anxiety because of his demeanor. Luckily and thankfully I walked out of there with a B but it was tough.
He can seem intimidating but he is just passionate about the material at hand. You have to do the reading and speak up in class. You do not have to agree with his views but be able to defend your own. There is only a midterm and final so the rest is participation.
Very strict and the class is very very demanding. However, there's no denying the results and his methods really helped learned the language quickly and effectively. Ask questions and make sure you do the hw and studied the conjugations as he tells you to, and you'll do fine.
Franco can be very generous. If he knows you are working hard he will give you the grade he thinks you deserve, trust me I know. But you have to come to class, do his hw and participate so that he knows you are trying. Yes he is hard to please and can be rude, but he hates laziness. Dont give him 50% and expect to get an A. Study from the book!
I got a B+ in this class and I agree with all the comments below. But you know what, he saw that I was trying even though i struggled and he ended up rewarding me well. If you come to class, do his hw, and study for his exams then there is no reason he wont give you a good grade. He is not evil he just want you to earn your grade so try your best.
I took this class becuse i have to. but this is the worse class i have been took in my life. he didn't teach us anything just showoff his idea, and no instruction of the midterm. even though he has less work, but this is an easy failing class.
He's a really good professor and is passionate about what he does. You just need to keep up with the reading and TAKE NOTES. I feel that was the issue with many of the students. It may seem like he 's going off on tangents when he's really saying something relevant and will show up on the midterm or final. Take notes and you'll be fine.
The worst professor in the history of Baruch. One of the biggest pervs I've seen as a faculty member. I would never take another course with this guy, a waste of time. Honestly, don't even take him if he's the last professor in the world
If you really want to learn Italian this professor is just the right choice. He will give you everything you need, the rest depends on you. He is funny and charismatic, so you would love to study in his class if you take it seriously.
Worst professor I've ever had. I should have dropped it at the beginning of the semester when half of students left. His speaking is like murmuring and sometimes shouting. His ears are so bad that every time a student ask something, he always says speak louder several times until the student yells. Lectures are unorganized. Exams rely on lectures.
Do your homework and participate always. He seems mean but he really want his students to learn and succeed in life. He doesn't like lazy people so please don't waste his time if you are not interested in learning Italian. I would totally take his class again.
Prof Zangrilli is a character, don't mind if he yells, or asks you to speak louder. It's just his thing. He is very passionate about what he is doing, and very knowledgable (wrote 40 books!). He gave us many inspirational speeches and encouraged us to do our best as students to succeed. Test are easy if you do your homework. Overall, great class!
He teaches straight from the textbook, but if you need help, he will explain further. He loves Italian literature and does assign readings, but you aren't graded on it. I took Italian for 4 years in high school and learned more in the 1 year I had with him. He's a little fresh sometimes if you're a pretty girl, but he's also adorable. Would recc.
Since like a funny person who always yell and complained that he cant hear you and speak louder while he is talking to himself that we cannot hear him. He will also speaks over you while your in the middle of speaking.
Just don't take him worst professor every in this world he doesn't like you if you are not agree with his opinion Only midterm and final which affects 50%of your grade and if you are not participate in class you will not going to pass. You need to study by yourself using a note that he talked about during class. Need to take a note to pass.
I did not have a good experience with this professor. We did not follow the syllabus and grading was super unclear. Boring lectures... he'd read and then rambled on and on and then BOOM we were hit with a test... He should remember his students names and at least attempt to build a relationship with them.
He's quite a character, and expects a lot from his students. Very smart guy. If you really work hard and take thorough notes during his lectures, he'll reward you. He likes to see his students trying.
Professor Zangrilli was the highlight of my most recent semester. Though at times erratic and explosive, he is a real gem. Be prepared to read! There is a lot of assigned reading and he expects for you to know your stuff. His tests are fair as long as you have read! Poem identification, short answers, and two essays usually on midterm/final.
Very laid back but knows his literature. He's definitely passionate about what he does. You really have to read and study the material if you want a good grade. Not a lot of writing involved for a writing intensive class, so if you like literature but hate papers, he's the guy to take. Go to class, take notes on his analysis and you'll do well.
He is a quite character. He makes students study hard. He has an Italian accent so I had some hard time to understand. Let me tell you some tips for this class. 1 DO NOT SKIP CLASSES 2 WRITE EVERYTHING WHAT HE SAYS 3 MEMORIZE EVERY POEMS FOR EXAMS. (For Poem identification part) 4 COLLABORATE EVEYRHING WHAT HE SAID N WRITE FOR ESSAYS QUESTIONS.
Professor is very old fashioned. Is not realistic with his expectations, the course is HARD and disorganized, he does not do in class review he expects you to study all the material on your own. Gives three tests throughout the semester but does not give reviews prior to the test, basically the test is a free for all if you have a choice DONT TAKE
Several students dropped the class in the first week possibly because of Prof Zangrilli's thick Italian accent. Stick around, you'll get used to it. This class is mandatory for graduation. Tips: Listen to and make note of the concepts he explains. Do the readings (this is not negotiable). This is not a cake walk. Do the work. Easy A
I liked this class and found the text thought-provoking but difficult to understand at first. There were a lot of ESL students in the class who struggled. He is enthusiastic about the subject matter, so ask questions! Not politically correct, but fine. We didn't have tests or quizzes, so the entire grade hung on the midterm, presentation and final
Professor Zangrilli grade here is too low. His class is structured where you must do the readings. I recommend reading the assignments at least once weekly. The big stories, maybe read twice, three times max + notes. Theres no class work or homework, except the readings, plus an essay or presentation. The reading are interesting (in a good way)
You must read the textbook if you want a good grade in this class. Overall good professor.
No homework, he doesn't provide any guidance or structure for his students. He is rude and singles out students with ancients even though he has a very thick one. Very short-tempered; gives timed essay qu on midterm and final. Advice removes your own opinions regarding the literature and regurgitates his own. Webcam on and participation is a must.
Interesting lectures, knowledgable, respectful and fun.
Professor Zangrilli is extremely stubborn and only wants his students to repeat his opinions. He is very stubborn and can be rude. If you don't like being interrupted when you speak, then don't bother taking this class.
I was in this class spring 2020 during the initial shut down. In class, lectures were dense and not engaging at all. He is very passionate about the material, that is for certain, but a lot of the time he would be rude and dismissive to students. He requests very specific assignments with little instruction and can barely communicate.
No written hwks. Just need to read books. Exam heavy. Exams are hard. Lecture Heavy. Pls write and memorize the stuff he tells you in class bc 100% of the time it will come in the exam. No quizzes. Lenient exam grader. Just Bs as much as you can boom A. Memorize EVERYTHING by heart otherwise won't pass. He's type rude but dont snap back at him.
I have a lot to say, but I'll keep it simple: don't take him unless you have no other choice. When it comes to literature, Zangrilli is a very passionate individual, however, he is also very stubborn, close-minded + rude. Expect to do a lot of reading and don't be fooled by the lack of written classwork. He piles it up for the midterm + final.
Prof. Zangrilli can be very rude. He cuts you off a lot when you are talking. Do not rely on his syllabus. There is no homework just a whole lotta readings and two exams. HOWEVER, it is not hard to pass the class. Take notes on everything he says. EVERYTHING HE TALKS ABOUT WILL BE ON THE FINAL AND MIDTERM. So take good notes and you will be good.
Attendance is mandatory, there is a midterm ,a presentation and a final. Make sure to take notes and participate during the classes. Honestly, if you read the assigned authors and take notes, you will be fine. Important: when he says essay, MAKE SURE YOU WRITE INTENSIVELY, BRING THE EXAMPLES FROM THE BOOK, otherwise you would lose many points.
