not at all approachable
knows his stuff, but hates to share it
No Comments
Very knowledgeable in his field. Tests were marked hard though
Good Prof. Hard marker. Lectures were very interesting
Extremely knowledgeable instructor, demanding but fair. Hard work is rewarded.
He is good. He knows what he's talking about; he loves most of what he has to teach. He wanted us desperately to understand it, and thats not always easy. Tough is good; did you think any of this was going to be a cakewalk?
He was such a great teacher. He was always really clear and was desprate for people to understand the concepts and made himself really accessible to his students. His assignments and tests were really easy and he always added humor in to his lectures.

Not too easy, not too hard! Marks assignments fairly and his tests aren't too hard. Very interesting lectures and great notes!
His in-class activites are super fun; he reminds me of "Yvonne of the Yukon"
I loved his class, it was what helped me decide to major in Anthro. He also has a great sense of humour, and lots of stories about his fieldwork. He can be a hard marker though.
He is an egomaniac. Even when a fellow student pointed out that he had made an error on a test he was unwilling to accept the fact he could have been wrong until everyone else realized the error. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! He gives marks based on gender as well. Same answers, different marks.
He is a funny prof, very passionate about what he teaches. Marks assignments fairly, tests are harder than expected - lots of written work on exams.
His lectures are fascinating,he's an entertainer.Unfortunely,if you try to talk to him he is unapproachable. He seems to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder, maybe spurned by a lover in the jungles of Panama?Tests are hard, esp.multiple choice.Made me decide to major in anthro.
he is really good in class and makes the class fun, but when you talk to him outside of class he is really unapproachable. his tests weren't that hard if you do the work.
Francois is very funny and in many ways a good tacher, however he does not like teaching, and this too comes out some times. He has very ambiguous difficult M/C exams and is quite close minded and cynical - even dogmatic. And I say this even though we share similar polotical views.
As long as you are thorough while studying the notes and text you will be fine on the exams, he does sometimes pick obscure things to test on, they are a bit on the tough side but not if you know your stuff. He is occasionally funny, and you can tell he is passionate about what he studies.
Smart dude, he is actually pretty funny(sometimes). Its obvious he is a bit of a jackass but still is an excellent teacher. Fairly east tests
humourous, however his m/c midterms are difficult because he will test on the ambiguous little things rather than focus on the important things-the essay was easy however he does not respond to emails quickly or offer helpful advice, simple final but he needs to revise the amount of his m/c to correspond with the time alloted for the test
Fun and energetic in class but does not do reviews and basically thinks he runs the world - very unapproachable
Great prof, test are simple if you come to class and take notes. He hands out questions to answer from the readings so u don't have to read the whole text. Very sarcastic humor, i love it! He really makes you think, and isn't afraid to share his opinion. One of my best classes this semester.
This guy knows his stuff and how to teach it. He however makes his testing a suprise as he does not have reviews or posting of old tests. :( I recommed if you want to learn anything about anthro this is the teacher!
he defenetly knows his stuff, but his lecture notes are not posted on the web, and i find him very unapproachable. his lectures are very good though and he is very thorough. his examples and stories are really good
Interesting class. He IS an entertainer, but also encourages class discussions that are both relevant and useful. A little hard to approach but overall friendly and a good teacher.
I came to this class with a general interest. He shot down everything I thought this class would be like.He is boring, sarcastic, biased, and does not offer much help. His humor is bland and he doesn't realize it which makes it even worse. Obvious grudge against the world and expresses his (unwanted) opinion far more than required.Try to avoid class.
extremely rude, does not seem to care at all about his students. very unhelpful
he goes on a lot of tangents and if you miss a class you'll need to get the notes you missed..and you will have missed notes.
he's smart
he is hard to underdtand, and does not care about his students, i would never reccommend him
Attendance is mandatory, you will most likely bomb the first midterm if you don't study the text book and his notes word for word. He does not believe in half marks, it is either you have the material down or you don't.
very passionate about the subject!
Funny. Smart. Great Notes. But attentiveness, attendance, and reading is required. He writes really hard tests and the reading is the only way to pass. You must be diligent!
He is an alright Prof. Lectures and notes are clear, but the topics jump around alot. Overall good class, and interesting material. Easy marker, within reason. And he is always there for help if you need it.
He takes his first year Anth 110 way too seriously, you must know everything to expect a decent mark, he is very biased in his opinions and going against them will cause a loss of marks, he is unfriendly and unapproachable and I would never recommend him. Out of every class I took this was by far my lowest mark.
Powerpoints very clear and helpful, not boring, he makes jokes. Very good teacher, just show up and do what you're supposed to and answer questions.
I do not recommend this teacher at all! His lectures do not go hand in hand with the textbook at all. His lectures are very boring as well. Don't recommend him at all
Must read text and come to class, tests on obscure things and is a difficult marker with short answer. Must explain everything. Unapproachable and unwilling to discuss tests, comes off as a jerk when talking to him individually. Lectures are interesting and funny, notes and explanations good.
Larose is a good prof, he requires that you read your text along with studying the class notes. Although he is not very apporachable I would recommend him and look forward to being his student again.
I LOVE Larose. He is hilarious and his lectures are so interesting. You have to attend lectures and I'd recommend writing notes beyond the power point. If you do your readings and follow along in class, you will do well.
Very good teacher, funny and interesting lectures. He's not the warm fuzzy helpful type, so you'll have to work out the answers for study questions by yourself. You also must attend class, and remember the textbook readings almost word for word. Good marks are possible with dedication. Overall a good teacher.
Terrible teacher. Do not recommend!
Larose can be intimidating and even rude I found. But he's also quite funny and interesting. Make sure to take notes in class and study the textbook. Tests can be tough. Also, don't be late!
lectures incredibly dull, you'll have a hard time attending this class.
In order to pass the course you must attend lectures because that is all his tests are on and he does not post the notes. He has very interesting stories to keep you interested. His tests are terribly hard though and very specific so you have to know your stuff inside and out.
I do not recommend this professor at all, communicating with him is ridiculous. He is far from helpful when you ask for feedback on assignments. Extremely rude, find another professor.
His exams are very hard, you need to know every specific detail. HIs lectures are really boring and he comes off as rude. Need to work extremely hard to get a decent grade.
Very critical comments on assignments but they let you know exactly what you are doing wrong and will make you want to work harder on other ones.
If you take this class, be prepared to teach yourself. Probably the only teacher that asks his students to read 6 chapters, that have nothing to do with his lectures, PLUS his lectures (that he doesn't post on BB)for ONE midterm. A total and utter joke, especially for an intro class. I would absolutely NOT recommend this teacher.
If you take this class you should know ahead of time that you will have to teach yourself. He does not clarify points and makes people feel stupid for asking questions. He goes through power-points really fast & won't post on bb or slow down. Do not take this class. It will ruin your GPA.
Absolutely useless. This prof does not give any sort of guidance and if you take this course, be sure to answer questions in essay format. He will not give you any mark if he believes your answer is too "vague" (which in most cases, it will be) The class average was 35/70
Great teacher, gives good in-class notes but if you don't show up and only do the readings chances are you will NOT pass his class. Very funny and has great stories and life experience in the field to share. Sadly he isn't very approachable.
He's ok. Lectures are good, he explains things well, gives a lot of examples and wants class participation. You HAVE to read the text and you HAVE to attend lectures or you WILL fail. He doesn't post notes and can be a tough grader. He may come off really blunt but that's just him. I had to put most effort into this class compared to all my others.
Took it in summer school and found the lectures quite dry and hard to pay attention.
- : Not approachable, lectures are dull (powerpoint & discussion), doesn't post notes + : Lessons are straight forward, funny, has lots of cool stories, gives great examples, get out of lectures early, the multiple choice section on exams are super easy, and the BEST PART: Come exams he'll post what you need to study for and what to ignore
I really enjoyed Dr. Larose's class; however, it is A LOT of reading in addition to the notes from class. They don't correspond to one another all the time, so doing both is mandatory. He also doesn't post his lecture notes online, which is somewhat annoying. His lectures are very interesting though and he has some really funny stories.
Took Intro to Anthro which was way to hard for a 100 lvl course and I'm not one of those lazy students. I have a high GPA and his class definitely lowered it. His tests are very hard and you NEED to study both his notes and read every chapter of the text. You need buy the textbook. He did have some neat stories! I'll give him that ;)
Honestly Larose was probably the most straight forward teacher there is at Macewan. Always tells you what's gonna be on the exam, and clearly explains material. Honestly I'm not that interested in Anthropology but his class was one I looked forward too. Also his exams aren't really that bad IF YOU ACTUALLY STUDY! OH and you NEED the textbook!
Not sure why people are saying he's super tough for ANTH101. I don't even like ANTH and ended with a 87% overall average. All I did was read the chapters once and not skip a class and I did perfectly fine. Can be unapproachable, tests are straightforward, does not post notes online, if you skip, your grade will plummet BAD.
The class was really straight forward. You show up, take notes and you read the textbook and you're fine. If you skip class, get then you won't do well. He doesn't post notes so if you miss a class, you'll have to get them off someone else.
His lecture slides aren't overly detailed but he explains everything thoroughly in class. Is a firm believer in stupid questions and if you ask one he will give you a snarky response. For my class we had online quizzes every few weeks that were strictly textbook based so the textbook is a must. Pretty helpful outside of class and pretty funny dude.
Avoid if possible. The material is interesting but the prof is almost non existent for comments and gives terse replies which often miss the question. Each week sees 1 marked assignment, 3 non graded 'optional' assignments, and 1 quiz plus a tonne of reading. There is not enough time. Last discussion 140 students chimed in, we are all spent.
as someone that's used to getting 85's and spent a moderate time studying for his class, im upset that he had the nerve to give me a 30% on an essay that i spend weeks on and refused to tell me why. he is unhelpful when approached, and rude about grading papers and long answers on essays. i do not recommend taking his class.
Funny dude lol. Very clear-cut with what he expects out of his students. Attendance is mandatory because he doesn't post notes on blackboard. If you skip class, you'll fall behind on the notes and will most likely bomb the midterms. His exams are extremely fair. Doesn't surprise you with anything on his tests. Does timed online quizzes as well.
Awesome Prof. Funny, easy to listen to, clear explanations. You can tell he knows what he's talking about. If you go to class, read what he tells you to, and want to be there you'll do great in the class. He DOES NOT put his lecture notes online so be prepared to attend every class. Exams are more than fair if you keep up with notes and readings.
He doesnt really like his students. If you email asking questions he is very unclear with his response and when you ask for clarification he gives none or is very snarky. He will not help on tests and does not post lectures online. Lectures are very straight forward and his power points are very helpful. Attendance is a must and so it the textbook.
Really interesting class, as long as you're there and read the textbook it's easy. Doesn't hold your hand through learning, which is nice.
You must attend class: there is a ton of content and he does not post his lectures online. Start studying from day 1 and do all of your readings - his exams are brutal, you must do the assigned readings (as well as the review questions) and study all of your course notes. If you do the work you will do well - if not, expect to fail, seriously!
He was very old school, which wasnt my problem with him. I had issues with him being excessively rude to students in his class. When we would ask questions we were belittled, or told to go and read the textbook. He would then insinuate that our class was stupid when we would not answer his questions. Bad Professor, and mean.
I am a usual A - B student, but this was the first class I have ever failed. The material was actually extremely interesting, but he was very dull and condescending in his tones. I came to all the classes, took detailed notes, but he has a way of twisting the wording of questions on an exam just to make you fail. He is not helpful in the slightest.
Makes you memorize all the textbook stuff AND his lectures- which has additional info to the text- and then asks very specific questions. I started off excited for astronomy but not so much anymore..
Super funny with an odd sense of humor. Very engaging. His assignment at the end was easy. Tests are tough but fair if you study properly.
Francois is by far the best prof I have had! He is hilarious which makes the lectures interesting. He does not post notes so you have to go to class but the classes are interesting and not long.
Tougher class in the sense that there is a lot of reading material and lecture notes but his lectures definitely held my interest. He is very sarcastic and kind of degrading to his students, but I found it rather hilarious.
He doesn't post his power points online, so it is a must to be in class since a good portion of tests are from lectures and what he puts into his power points. The readings are dull, but he makes them more interesting when he explains the key concepts in class. Keep up with your readings and attend class and review and you should be totally fine.
I enjoyed the cl;ass quite a bit, and it was quite easy for the first half, however I missed ONE class and it did massive damage to my grade. Show up, or you are doomed.
Larose was wonderful. He was very clear and knew the material by heart. I thought he explained things so well and was helpful. I went to him regarding a mid-term mark, and he was nice and gave good feedback. If you want to do well in this class, instead of blaming him, YOU have to do the readings and study and try to understand the material.
Overall good prof. Attending class is essential as he does not post his powerpoints online. You also need to read the textbook. But he is funny, and passionate. He gives reasonable marks. I was engaged during his lectures and his tests were easy.
Francois is hilarious and such an old school teacher. Some of the content is super boring but his random jokes make up for it. Online quizzes are tougher than in-class exams, but just go to class and be prepared to take notes since nothing is posted online. If something is important or not he will usually tell you, honestly just pay attention.
He obviously cares a lot about Anthropology, and it shows in his lectures. The textbook is mandatory and used throughout the course. His lectures are dull but chocked full on information. He does make jokes now and then, especially about cats. If you show up and do your readings it is an easy A.
Larose is a good prof, very knowledgeable and passionate about his work. However, his notes are difficult to follow, and often there was conflicting info in the text vs. his notes. Lecture is mandatory, readings are mandatory, midterm/final is dependant on readings. If you take thorough notes and cross-ref with the text, you are GOLDEN!
Very funny, very kind! I found his lectures very amusing. He has notes which aren't posted so you must attend class. Also his exams are 50/50 for the lecture notes and the textbook content. The exams are tricky but overall fair. He understands his students and takes into consideration their lives outside of his class.
Francois was great! Very passionate about his subject, pretty funny, and very clear about what to study for. The discussions online were easy marks as well. I would recommend him, but you must go to class, as he doesn't post any notes on blackboard
Does not post notes on blackboard - talks too quickly, cant even write or type to keep up. Pretty much responds to everything we ask or answer with, "ummm, no." "not really, no." "ahhh, sorta." Very unclear. Makes you read ALOT of dry content, and tests on it. Very unclear about whats on tests. Don't recommend this prof.
Took his class as an elective and it was super hard and I do not recommend taking this class as an elective.( not an easy A) His exam questions are hard and you must support your answers and it must be exactly right to get marks. Must do readings and go to class . Exams were half lecture, half readings and you can not study the night before.
Took his class in spring and I would not recommend taking this prof again. He posts study questions and tells you what to read from the text but it's as if none of those are on the final exam. Marks extremely hard on the short answers and is not helpful when you ask him for questions.
I found Dr. Larose to be an excellent instructor. As long as you attend class, ask questions to clarify, read through your text book, and don't save studying to the last minute, you have nothing to worry about. He provides funny, well spoken and informative lectures. I would take his lectures again.
Larose offers clear guidelines for what's on his tests! He does not give you lecture notes, and you will have to do some readings from the textbooks, but he gives you a list of questions for the readings. This is all you need to know for the exams from the textbook! and he will take questions directly from this list! Easy grade if you read!
Larose provides a very in-depth study guide for his exams that are very helpful. He is passionate about the lecture material and approaches it in a very unbiased way. He doesn't give clear instructions on the group project, but overall is a very good professor.
Larose will make you do some work for your grade but not more than other classes. Tests are all multiple choice, the only other assignments are two short responses (a total of about 800 words) online, on a video. I spent about 90 minutes on each for full marks. He doesn't post notes but his lectures are funny and I didn't mind having to go.
Great prof, made me laugh all the time. Easy grader. Attend class as he doesn't post notes online and read the material assigned as he tests are based 50/50 on each. Material is interesting but he made it even better. Can maybe be a bit condescending to students, but they usually deserve it and again I found it hilarious.
I think Francois is a great prof! He is hilarious in class and really tries to get the main points across. You have to keep up with lectures in class as he does not post the notes but they are easy to follow along. He gives great examples and involves the class in meaningful discussions. His exams are fair if you study lectures and readings!
I felt with this class, because it was online it didn't really make a difference to me who was the teacher. Francois didn't do much for giving notes you basically just have to read the whole textbook and thats where you learn the content. I felt like i could have done this class without a teacher. Easy marker but there is a lot of content to learn.
As a fourth year student, I found this class to be extremely heavy for an intro level course. For the midterm, you need to start studying about a week in advance because there is so much detail that you are quizzed on. The weekly quizzes are also VERY specific. I would suggest taking this class in person rather than online.
Good at conveying information during the lectures.
Dr. Larose's humour was possibly my favourite thing this semester. With that said, his class isn't all fun and games; it's heavy with information with more assignments than you'd expect from an introductory class including discussions and 2 midterms. He's enthusiastic and knowledgeable, but it takes a lot of work to succeed in his class.
Im taking an online class of his and he is so vague with his emails. I asked him some questions with respect to the midterm exam and how to prep for it, because the study guide was so vague itself and he did not give me any specific instructions. His midterm is very specific. Study two weeks before at least. Would not recommend at all.
Luckily his grading information for exams are put into a study guide (I found to be very clear) and that's all I needed to get an A- on the test in a day of studying. Discussions are graded fairly and a great way to boost your mark as long as you show some effort. Posts grades incredibly fast.
Francois is a must take if you are taking an anthropology course. Show up and take notes because he does not post notes online. His lectures are insightful and he keeps them fun and interesting. He is very well liked by all his students. By following the grading criteria for assignments and attend lectures, you are able to do well.
bad prof with a bad attitude. avoid
I can understand why some people don't enjoy him but I found his lectures were interesting and he was very clear about his expectations for the exams. He would even repeat himself multiple times to convey if something is going to be on the exam. Don't skip his class or you will miss infomation, he tests 50% textbook and 50% lecture.
This is the worst professor I have ever come to have an online class with. His midterms and final exams are ridiculous for an intro level anthropology course. Makes you read unnecessary readings and barely provides guidance for what to study for. Seriously avoid at all costs.
He was a really good teacher. Hilarious lectures that kept you interested and a lot of joking along the way. His written portions of the exams could be difficult, but the questions were always fair if you had studied for the exam
As a fourth year student, it was not what I expected for an introductory course. Francois larose relies solely on the textbook and gives vague information as to what he expects from his students. When I emailed him regarding the course material he simply told me to just read the textbook. Does not care for his students and shows no desire to help.
Took this class online. Horrible professor. Gives 0 or little feedback and seems like he doesnt care when students ask for help. Online quizzes are quite difficult and time consuming. He is also a tough grader on online discussions. My biggest mistake was taking this class or maybe it was taking this class with Francois Larose...
Was in his ANTH101 course, he is an okay prof, never had online course. 1st thing, set up meetings for more information on assignments/quizzes which I didn't do. For assignments, structure to rubric and manage time properly. Feedback was very brief, I didn't care, had other papers to do. Would take again if in lect, need to follow my pers schedule.
Would not take this class again. Exams are pretty much only textbook based. His lecture slides are barely on the exams. Has a arrogant attitude and does not seem to care about his students. Makes this course harder way than it should be.
I have taken online Anthro classes and found them interesting and easy to learn so this one is disappointing. For online Anthro 219, Larose doesn't include any mediums to aid in learning besides reading the textbook and answering questions (for study purposes). Quiz questions were completely different from chapter questions. Hard to learn this way
Some of the questions on the tests sound challenging, but are in-fact quite simple. I think his lectures are very relevant to the tested material, and attendance is required for that much desired "A". Don't over-think a complicated question, often times he'll be seeing if you can identify many aspects of a single topic, keep it simple and on topic
I took ANTH 101 as an online class. Professor Larose is okay but isn't very specific when answering questions. His lectures are boring and, for that reason, are hard to follow. His quizzes are extremely specific because they're open book, and the course relies on textbook readings, which are long and boring.
Boring lectures and rely heavily on textbook reading if you want to pass tests. MC and short answer; not a hard class but you definitely need to read and take notes to pass. Took online so very little interaction w prof as no scheduled class times.
TONS of reading in this class. Larose was an okay prof, took the class online, and all lectures were asynchronous besides optional weekly meetings. The lectures had some material for the quizzes and tests but were pretty boring. Textbook readings are heavy, boring, and long, and the quizzes are extremely specific.
He doesn't respond to emails and even if he did, it would be condescending and he does not care for it. I emailed him for accommodations for exams due to being ill and with the current situation but no reply. So I emailed department head and him responding to me only after that with no empathy still. The course is heavy reading and tests are hard.
Avoid him! He's a VERY tough grader. He's looking for VERY specific things. It's supposed to be a GPA booster but happened to be the hardest course I have taken because he grades very low. It's my lowest grade so far.
Prof Larose did not reply to any of my emails ever, and whenever he did, his replies would be of no use and would consist of 5 words. I had to listen to lectures and read the textbook to do well on the quizzes and exams. There are better profs out there for Anth101. Larose is not the best, but he isn't horrible either.
He's horrible for a first level course. The exams are based off the textbook, there's practically no teaching on his part and the questions are very difficult especially if you're struggling to get past the long readings. There's better profs out there.
Lecture material and textbook material do not cross over at all so you pretty well learn x2 information. Readings are heavy and there are multiple a week. The format of exams is not ideal. His explanation in lecture is vague yet the depth of detail he requests on exams is extensive. Would absolutely not take it again.
Just awful. Biggest regret taking his class. Lectures material was useless because none of it showed up on tests or the exams. Lectures and textbook readings did not correlate which made it 2x more work. Textbook readings were long and boring.
Youll never be asked to define terms, its about understanding how they relate and giving examples. Despite being online, you actually have to put in the work and study as exams/quizzes are very time restricted so cant wing them. He doesnt test outside of his study guide questions. Overall easy class chill prof just requires effort from the student
readings are MANDATORY as he basically draws all exam material from them- word for word. he rarely comes up with his own questions. exams were timed and difficult and ridiculous! super unempathetic. never responded and if he did the responses were brief and unhelpful
Why am I paying for a whole course just to read the textbook and get a grade on it? Dont waste your money taking remote courses with him, he doesnt teach AT ALL (the course is 100% teach yourself), barely responds to his e-mails and gives five words of feedback on assignments. Completely disengaged and unhelpful. Horrible prof for online courses.
No communication whatsoever.
Grading has been fair but, for a first year course, the amount of reading you have to complete is absurd, almost twice as much as my 400 level courses. This week alone, we have been assigned 3 chapters of reading (90 pages) that do not correlate with the lecture. Tested heavily on the readings. If you want a social life, avoid!!
This professor is one of the better professors I've had. I enjoyed the content of the class and he was relatively engaged with us even though the class was online. I found the class to be quite test heavy, and the lecture material is mainly textbook. Testing is mainly content-understanding based. Overall, I would recommend him for this course.
Both midterms and final are short answers, you have to be crazy specific and give tons of examples on the midterms and final, he's a hard marker and doesn't elaborate on what you did wrong on the tests. Doesn't show empathy or care towards how you're doing in his course. All of the PowerPoint lectures are boring and he tends to ramble.
I really enjoyed this class and it's content, the tests are mainly based on textbook reading so make sure to keep up with the textbook and you'll be solid. His lectures are simple and easy to stay engaged with as well with the quality of notes, I signed up for another class with him as I really enjoyed the amount of work balance.
I enjoyed taking his class. He was funny and the course was pretty easy to follow. The only negative would have to be the amount of reading we had to do for the class I took. He is very knowledgeable and you definitely need to go to class in order to pass.
There are a lot of readings, but he provides you with study questions. He uses those questions plus questions from the lectures. There are two midterms and one final. He offers questions to choose from, and you must be specific. You have three quizzes (5% each) plus two assignments (600 words, 10% each). Yes, he is blunt in his email responses.
Was all online but his recorded ppts were as if you were in class. A lot of reading in the textbook- he doesn't go over this in his ppts so this is on your own and difficult. A quick marker and has clear criteria. I thought it was a easy class and had easy assignments.
Don't take anthropology with him if it's just your non-business-elective course! Might as well major in it with all the studying you need for this class! Exams are all short answers. Doesn't post powerpoints, and his powerpoints aren't that helpful with the questions he gives on the exams.
Very tough tests. The midterm I wrote was all short answer and he wants you to provide a ton of detail. Doesn't provide the lecture slides so attendance is mandatory. Tends to ramble about useless stuff during class. Definitely don't recommend taking as an elective, only take this class if you intend on majoring/minoring in it.
Very apathetic towards his students, never replies to emails and makes the course incredibly boring. I'm aware it is online but jheez... could of at least made it a tad interesting. I love anthropology and love all my other classes. I've never had a class so bland. will avoid him at all costs.
Attendance and required readings are mandatory. His exams are set up fairly so that it is either directly from textbook or his lectures and he is very engaging. The assignments are also very easy marks as well. This course was life changing to me.
Larose is funny at times but that does not make the class worth it. Textbook readings are SO important bc half the midterm Q's are based on it. He doesn't post lectures/notes online, so try not to skip class. He is very peculiar with grading for tests & the questions are HARD!!! Study study study. He asks the class for answers but says EHHHHHHH...
Just awful. No help outside of class. Responds to emails with 4 words maximum. Did not even try to engage with students all semester. Had an entirely open book course, finished it off with a closed book final. I understand it is online and there is a ton of content but he could have tried a bit more. Never again.
Have to read 2 or more chapters a week plus attend lectures. Two midterms and a final which are all short answer. Crazy amount of material to memorize. Readings are dry and very boring/hard to get through. Very difficult marker. I emailed him 4 times throughout the term and he did not reply once. Do not take this class as an elective.
He had great lectures and made the class very interesting. He brought in stories from his own experiences and many examples that made everything more clear and easy to remember. I really enjoyed the class. His tests were all short answer and you had to be very specific to get the marks. Other than that it was great and not too much work.
lectures are boring but you cannot miss one. only had exams and quizzes and 2 discussion posts so you gotta do well on all. all exams are written and he marks very hard. honestly felt like I didn't deserve the grade I got but I won't even bother disputing it. takes 2 days to reply to an email & will give you one-word responses with no clarification
His lectures were engaging and entertaining if you have a genuine interest in Anthropology. There was quite a bit of reading, but completely reasonable so long as you have decent time management. He often shared from his personal experiences and was clearly passionate about his subject. He does not post his PowerPoints, attendance is crucial.
Tends to ramble. He rarely answers his emails and when he does it's with short sentences. I had a family crisis on the day of the midterm and he wouldn't let me reschedule while all my other professors did. He doesn't seem to care. Wouldn't take a class with him again.
He talked great thing in lecture but dont post any powerpoint even if i ask for the powerpoint he refuse to give it. textbook is mandatory as he said said theres stuff that he havent talk about but are cover by textbook will be on the test. He also made our midterm fully written and then complain about how we didn't answer the way he want.
Doesn't post his slides so while attendance is not mandatory you need to show up because you'll miss whatever he'll talk about that day. Lectures got boring as the semester went on, and there is so much reading you have to do from the textbook. Hard to connect the textbook with his lecture sometimes which doubles your work and your studying.
does not give slides to you, only accessible in class, rambles in lectures, extremely tough grader. you skip = you miss anything said and all slides gone through. dont recommend
I really enjoyed Larose. Lectures are funny and not "mandatory", but if you miss any you will fall behind because he often teaches things not mentioned in the textbooks. Tough exam grader, but he wants your own words rather than a mimic of the textbook. If you make an effort and take interest you will do well. I recommend both Larose and ANTH 101.
The workload for his class was honestly much heavier than it needed to be, as you had to know all details from his lectures as well as 300+ pages of the textbook. Each midterm and the final were also 17-20 short answer questions, and he graded them rather harshly. Overall, extremely boring and time consuming, although he tries to be a bit funny.
I used to dislike him because of the exam format. but after putting in the work, i passed the class. his exams are just written response. but the questions are simple. but he isn't an easy marker. all you gotta do answer and elaborate on ur answer. give an example and stuff. You just gotta know ur stuff. he's a nice person. and a good teacher.
Easy pass if you read the textbook and attend lectures. Attendance isn't technically mandatory but he doesn't post lecture slides, so you should attend. The midterms and final are only written responses and you really gotta know your stuff. Lectures were boring due to the material but he does his best, most lectures were engaging because of him
he doesn't post notes online, boring lectures, and tries to make jokes but marks incredibly hard and not clear what material is on the tests i would avoid.
Professor Larose does not have not most interesting lectures which of course, were mandatory. He does not upload his slides and expects you to be incredibly precise in the written portions of his exams. Do not take his class unless you have to. I took this class as a GPA booster and it tanked my GPA.
HE IS VERY FUNNY AND ENGAGING. HOWEVER, HE IS A TOUGH GRADER. GET READY TO READ, DOES NOT POST SLIDES, EXAMS ARE DEFINITELY HARD (ALL WRITTEN).
They are a super tough grader. Expect to learn very fine details within the course material and be sure to include them in any written assignments.
I took this course online and it was great! He posts the lectures and content early. We had two quizzes and 2 written assignments. I would say he is a fair grader and responded quickly to emails. Quizzes were mostly based off lectures, although a few questions from textbooks. I think overall, he's very easy going and an easy pass.
Took ANTH101 with him and I ended up withdrawing. He did not like when students asked questions, hated repeating himself even if a student did not understand the concept fully. Never answers emails. Doesn't post the slides so attendance is mandatory. Extremely picky on students' words of choice when writing written exams.
Professor Larose's class is challenging but rewarding. Lectures can be dry, but he makes them engaging with his humor. Exams are tough - you need to know the material well. Using resources like Unstuck study along with the textbook is key to doing well.
The toughest grader ever, he expects a really precise answer, and if you don't write exactly what he has in his mind, you will get no marks. He doesn't post his slides, and you're accepted to write what is on the slide and what he is saying both at the same time, and he goes through the slides so fast, which makes you unable to write everything.
need inclass notes!
He was unaccommodating and his lectures weren't engaging. I wouldn't recommend him as your Anthro 101 professor. He is a tough marker and you will need to read your textbook before hand. He barely answers emails and his exam are much more difficult.
