Hilarious teacher, best stories ever.
This guy is HILARIOUS!!!! Really made a 9:00 class worth attending!!! and he definitly knows what he is talking about... helped me realize that Anthro is the path i want to take in life. TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!!

He is a funny teacher with interesting stories to tell but is very moody at times.

I liked the class but Dr. Larose was not very helpful. It seemed like he did not care all that mch about students. I also had him for the lab and he did nothing but sit up front and talk to members of the department.
Very good. He explained many of the concepts through apt illustrations (from my textbook), which was in keeping with the anthropological method, and very enjoyable as well. Recommended.
Dr. Larose is peppy and funny 95% of the time.
Is interesting to listen to and his tests are fair; only downside is that he's a bit fussy and moody from time to time, gets a little annoying.
My friends and I found him excrutiatingly boring. He would try to joke around, but most of them fell pretty flat. Perhaps we were just not too interested in the course material, but I thought he was dull and that his notes weren't particularly helpful.
Good prof. Once in a while it is hard to understand through the french accent, but otherwise he is a great instructor.
Francois seems bitter to the world, he's very one-sided, and although makes some valid points, never even considers the alternative reasons for them.
Francois is very funny and easy to understand. You don't want to ****him off though. I've seen him yell and it's not pretty.
He is like the funniest prof ever. Very knowledgeable and strait forward
AND THEEEEN....this prof bothers me...he likes to make bold statements without any form of proof...doesnt seem to know background info of what he's teaching...cannot take a scientific approach and is critical and biased in his exams as well...tries to indoctrinate his extremist point of view...bland
He's very funny and explains things well, however, he hates teaching and it shows. His exams are very difficult because he asks obscure questions that don't test important basics. He's politically left which I like, but he's also very close minded cynic and a total cultural reductionist.
Larose is a decent prof. He's usually quite funny and sarcastic, but moody at times as well. He does not like to be challenged, however considering he has loads more education and experience in the field than we do, this seems appropriate. You should like him!
He is unapproachable, refuses to help students, is arrogant and lets his emotions(unpredictable at best) influence his lectures. He is judgmental, and though incredibly intelligent and educated,he seems to hate teaching and treat his students poorly. He asks trick questions on his exams-unfair marker
worst class of life! didnt learn anything new. irritable, biased, bitter. doesnt know the meaning of terms he put in his own notes.makes ridiculous interpretations out of many trends.extremely boring & useless textbooks without structure.cant make fair exams.the list goes on ask anyone whos had him
Hey this guy is cool. He may be exerting his rules in a straight foreward fashion at times, but at least this way the students have some respect for him. I like his class. Sharp, I think he is objective after all. HE does not seem to want to brain wash anybody. Cool cool.
Very unapproachable. Nice prof in that he teaches interesting material, but if you have a problem, you're out of luck. No point asking him unless you just want to get yelled at.
Larose is a bit of a grump. Not a nice guy but it doesnt matter much for Anthro 101, its pretty straight forward. Tests are all MC, and they have there moments. Decent overall.
He's very funny and knowledgable. He is, however, absolutely unapproachable (you risk getting made to feel like an idiot if you do). I wouldn't recommend taking anything other than a 100-level course with him. Tests are challenging, but fair... all multiple choice. You are expected to know text AND lecture material (that doesn't always overlap)
He's very funny and makes some of the more dull material bearable. His exams are fairly easy (all multiple choice) although some of the questions that are based on the textbook can be really random.
Absolutely terrible prof! Strays off topic for whole classes. Spends a class covering material which is only tested in one question. Incredibly difficult exams. Unclear tests. Some questions have more than one right answer. Textbook is boring and random. Only saving grace is his jokes, but they're not enough. Oh yea, he can't spell Neanderthal
Absolutely hilarious in class, completely disrespectful out of class. If the TA ever gives you a guest lecture make sure you take notes, he'll ask random questions about that on exams for the rest of the year. Know the text book inside and out. Some of the questions on examsare completely out of the blue but they're all mc.
extremely funny, made the class interesting. He can be moody and yells like a ***** but students deserve that.
I found this class to be stupidly easy. The prof is kind of loud and rude sometimes but he makes up for it with his easy tests. One of the answers was actually "evolution". How easy is that? I don't know how anyone could get a bad mark in this class, just read the notes and the book abd you'll do FINE. Awesome, easy, fun class!!
I think he might hate everyone, but he's hilarious and as long as you don't talk loudly in his class or have a cell phone on you'll be fine. His tests are an absolute breeze as long as you go to class and take notes. He can be a nice guy (although he defaults to sarcasm), just follow his classroom norms. If you're a freeloader he'll kill you.
Terrible prof. Very random questions on exams and class time was not used well at all.
Shoot me in the skull! This guy is torture! I still can't believe I actually had to PAY for his class. He is extremely disrespectful and rude. Treats all students, no matter what age, like inferior peons. Way to "holier than thou" to take seriously. The guy should quit his job if he hates it as much as he makes it look like he hates it...
Good prof. And I have never seen him actually yell at a student...He did once tell a couple of kids to be quiet, but that's expected, the man is trying to teach. I love his sarcastic remarks, they are awesome funny. His tests are alright, MC, but some of the questions are SO random. He uses his notes and the text, so don't try to skip over one.
He's a hell of a lot better than julija, whom he replaced for about a month after she mysteriously disappeared...
I thought Larose was a great prof, very sarcastic but in a funny way. His notes were very good but make sure you read the text, a lot of questions from the book that weren't in the notes show up there. When someone says something stupid in his class he lets them know, it's rather refreshing.
very good prof. classes are interesting. does not go far into detail but what he goes over in class is a general guide to what you should study further from the textbook. going to class is important as he tells you throughout the lectures what will and will not be on exams. read the textbook if you want to pass.
Attendance is a must, he doesn't post his pathetic notes online. Dull boring class, he has a horrible attitude. Textbook is almost complete blather, but you must read it if you want a decent mark. Takes questions from sidenotes as well as main topics. Didn't enjoy the course very much, spent way too much time on the common ancestor/evolution unit.

Read the textbook or you'll get slaughtered. Attending the class probably wasn't necessary, provided you got someone else's notes, but he was sarcastic and funny enough so that going to class is almost enjoyable. He wasn't mean unless somebody was disrespectful.
no need to attend this class. just buy the book and read the chapters. you'll do better on the midterm than people who go to class and get distracted with unimportant information.
very french. READ the TEXTBOOK!!!! If you learn by going to class go to class if not get the notes from a friend. to much time on monkeys.
I sat in the front row of his clas, and I really liked it... He's pretty funny. He actually makes you want to show up. Overall, pretty fair tests, just read the book and you'll be fine! Anyway, He's awesome, I liked him!
Fantastic teacher. Quite funny. He made the material really interesting. If I could take more classes with him I would. Make sure you read the text; he especially pulls questions out of sidebars and footnotes just to make sure you read it.
great prof, concentrate more on the book since 80% of the midterms and the finals are from the book. Memorize all the definitions. Very funny, interesting class.
I found this prof yo be rude and condescending.
He definitely knows what he's talking about. Lectures are a must, he doesn't post his notes (and there are a lot of them). Tests are pretty fair, but you definitely have to memorize notes and textbook readings. Interesting course... though he does seem bitter he is funny at times.
Great prof...manages to keep people interested for the most part (and in a class of 300, it's very easy to daydream). If you read the designated chapters in the book before going to class, you should do very well. Attendance is not exactly mandatory, but very helpful.
great prof, good person, highly recommend his class, you would find him smart funny and learn lots, need to read the text(especially concepts and terms), need to study his notes carefully as well...memorize!!!
Really great prof, always kept things funny and interesting. Used great examples to enhance the meaterial. Tests were quite textbook heavy and memorization is key!
An excellent professor! Coming into this course I was looking for easy credits, and didn't have any interest in the actual field of anthropology. He completely changed my outlook on the world, and it is a course I highly recommend. Very important to read the text!
If you want an entertaining prof, who knows what he's talking about, Larose is the guy. Every class is like a stand-up comedy show based on Anthro. Yeah, it's good, but make sure you read the text!
Bad teacher, hard to understand, very boring. Read the text like people said and almost failed..don't take him.
All he wants is for you to dictate back to him his views on racism and aboriginals. He leaves no room for opinions, he was boring, his "text books" were BORING
First class he let everyone know he wasn't their friend, but despite his obvious lack of enthusiasm in some areas he's still fascinating. The lectures are interesting and sometimes he's even funny. He got on top of a desk at one point and imitated a monkey. Be sure to study the material thoroughly.
What was tested, was not knowledge which was useful. Asks about who the theorist is, not what the theory is.
very interesting material, but too much reading. tests are more about spouting back random facts and names or testing your skills at multiple choice. there are also short answer qs of 1 word/1 sentence, but no critical analysis just lame regurgitation. ugh. i learned some new/interesting things but was disappointed in the testing
Funny guy, but a lot of material covered. Make sure to be familiar with both textbook and lecture notes. Does not post notes online.
Great Guy ... I didn't know what to expect from the mixed reviews on here. Just make sure you read the text and master the notes and then you're golden. I did well in his class like 90 and that's all I did. Class average is in the 60s so if you've got a good memory take the course.
GO TO CLASS and take notes. He tests on many small details from the textbook. Doesn't put his notes online but they're quite thorough in class.
Notes not posted online. Go to class! Nice prof, very interesting.
Don't be fooled by his dour expression, Larose has a very well developed sense of humor. His lectures are dripping with sarcasm and are quite hilarious most days - just don't ask stupid questions in class! Like others said, read the text thoroughly. The subject material varies from fascinating to dull, but Larose does a great job teaching it all.
He is very funny because of his cynical nature but he is very set in his views. If you disagree with his opinion too bad just shut up and keep it to yourself. Otherwise an interesting class with easy exams, do the study questions and read the notes and its an easy B.
Pay attention in class, and thoroughly read the textbook, concentrating on small details. His sense of humor often makes class interesting, but the tests are difficult multiple choice and sometimes not entirely clear on what the question is asking. The class averages on tests seemed quite low...
Read every bit of textbook!! That is key. I liked his lectures; he is pretty cynical but it suits him. He's actually quite funny. But DON'T speak up in class because he will probably mock you.
Pretty boring but nice enough guy. He explained simple concepts in ALOT of detail which made for a very dull class. Tested on text material more than class material. Hilarious when he cracked the odd joke but I wouldn't take another class with him.
This class was the easiest class i had every taken in my university career. The lecutre is very interesting and the mideterms/ final was just based on the notes and the book and its all multiple choice. To do good in this class just pay attention in the class, do those questions that he gives for the reading you will definataly get an A.
Tedious, awful class. If you're interested in memorizing primates, go for it. Worst survey class yet. He makes you memorize the textbook for the first two midterms but the final was easy. Don't be deceived on the first day when he seems like a funny, nice guy. I found him disrespectful, condescending and unenthusiastic.
I found him and the textbook really boring. His tests had too many random useless questions. And you had to memorize too many primate names. Overall, just a very boring class. Not too hard to do well though if you actually memorize those primate names, because the class average was low.
Seemed funny at first, but turned out to be very boring and a bit rude sometimes. His exams usually had 50 multiple choice questions. You'd have to memorize every little fact to get a really high mark
sarcastically funny but very rude! There is a lot to memorize for this course, NOT a GPA booster! Material is pretty boring
Good class. His notes are very well organized and he does a good job at supplementing videos in to give a break from lecture. Can be very funny and knows his material well. Tests can be tough but it is not hard to do well as long as you do your readings and study the notes!
I love this guy. Had him for 101 and 219 and he's hilarious! I wish he taught more at the U of A. 219 is an incredibly boring course but he kept lectures entertaining and his tests were pretty easy. The curve might hurt you though, the final grade average was pretty low in the end...
At first I was unsure about this teacher because he came across a little cold but after a while he warmed up and started using humour in his lectures. Larose is very good at teaching ...and you learn quite a bit in his class! He defintely is an expert in his field and I would recommend him for this mediocure class.
i knew nothing about this class going in, but he made me look forward to every class because of his humour, and insightful teaching. i would recommend him to every one of my friends
Really funny
I definitely found Larose to be a mediocre and condescending professor. I'm an Anthro major and I like learning about primates - his lectures were funny at times, but the tedious details that he puts on exams are annoying. If you like summarizing textbooks, take the course with him.
my major is stat,i barely take arts option, but this is a good choice.it is really interesting and professor is knowledgeble,i am actually want to know more about this field. Tests are not that easy, but fair. like it!
Kept me interested with his witty quips and anecdotes. Made me laugh every class. Helpful when approached at the right times but not the bend-over-backward type of guy.
He is a nice person in front of the class but a little rough around the edges when its one on one. His notes are somewhat of a guideline, but you have to read the textbook to get all the information. know your primates and human evolution!
He's a mediocre prof. I have nothing bad to say about him. He uses humor in his lectures whihc can make 8 am classes bearable. He expands from the textbook and makes everything clearer. Always go to class in order to pass his tests. They are straight-forward, and are neither hard nor easy. By studying it's easy to get a good grade.
By far my favorite prof in terms of personality. He really makes you enjoy coming to class. Although his tests are tricky and do require you to do quite alot of memorization, he does a great job giving more details about aspects of the textbook. I suggest only those who are interested in Anthro take this class, because it's not a high GPA booster.
Okay, so no one should ever take this course as an elective. If you want to major in Anthro then go for it! But this course is otherwise useless. Francois isn't the nicest person in the world, but he tries to be funny. His notes are important for the final but for midterms its useless. You have to memorize the entire textbook.
Nothing bad to say about him. For a first year eglish class he is a pretty good prof. He expands on the text and his slides are interesnting. He's a humorous guy. The course itself is very dry & 8am it makes you want to die... Larose makes it bearable.
Buy the textbook. Read it. The read it again. Take notes. If you have to miss class, have a friend whos notes you can borrow because he doesn't post anything. His teaching style is straight forward - nothing amazing, but nothing terrible. Exam based in Notes and Text. Easy to get an A ONLY if you repeat the book and notes at least 3-4 times.
Excellent prof! Kept things interesting and he's quite funny. Classes are relaxed, with lots of student input into discussions. Make sure you read the textbook, tests tend to be based on the readings. Make sure you know your primatology and human evolution.
Difficult exams based on the textbook and the class notes. You have to know the textbook like the back of your hand. Really boring information (a million different monkeys! ugh!), and it's just uninteresting unless you plan to be an Anthropology major. Don't take it as an arts credit! There are way better classes out there!!
Attendence is definitely mandatory, he takes a lot of notes and doesn't post them online although they're on a powerpoint... Exams are really specific, although the final was easier than the midterms. There were 3 books and you need to read them all front to back. Funny guy, just a lot of information to learn.
Absolutely a great proff! He is well educated in his field and makes funny jokes.1st midterm average was 67% and the 2nd midterm was 60% . It's not hard to beat the curve if you study well. Take this class if you like the course only. I loved anthro 101 and will take any course with him again because he is excellent.
Had him for 101 too. His exams are hard for people doing high school effort. If you read all the texts AND his notes and make a decent effort to remember them you will do fine. This is straight forward material that is all memorization. Anthr 150 had some BRUTAL textbooks but Francois makes a valiant effort to make the class bareable. Hard worker=A
First midterm, I got slaughtered because I assumed class notes were important and made the mistake of dividing my study time between them and the textbook. Don't bother going to class - the book is all you need to know. Dry course material. Great lectures; wish they'd been relevant!
Funny french guy. Read the textbook material over and over and over for the first two midterms - don't bother with the notes until the final. Midterms are very detail intensive, final is more general and very easy. Only one question on the final was found exclusively in the class notes, from a video - otherwise, class attendance isn't necessary.
Unless you are an anthro major avoid this class like the plague. The tests require countless hours of memorizing the most incredibly dull textbook known to man. Lectures were interesting, but just not worth it. Larose was a good guy though and quite funny.
I found his lectures very interesting and he easily transferred his passion for the subject onto the class.
This prof is amazing! He definitely made this my favourite class even though it was 3h and at night. He's so passionate and knowledgable about what he's teaching, you wouldn't notice the time go by. Attendance is mandatory, he doesn't post notes online. No assignments and the exams are super easy (mostly based on his notes).
Really funny prof and interesting to listen to. He never puts his notes online, so attending his class is a must. Tests are straightforward and M/C, but are out of 5 options.
I found Dr. Larose's class interesting and easy to follow and I thought i was prepared for each exam...Until i actually wrote the exam! They were unreasonably difficult and were 5 option MC tests. DO NOT take this unless you want to be an Anthro Major
Larose really does know his stuff and the classes were very interesting. However I did find a lot of questions on his exams were a little unreasonable. KNOW EVERYTHING. I agree with everyone else in saying avoid his class unless you're majoring in anthro.
AWESOME PROF! Funny and easy to follow lectures. If you attend class and read the textbook before exams, you will do well. I would take another class because it was taught by him. No paper, 2 midterms and a final. Some pretty funny stories about his field work. Post no notes online but has really good powerpoints in class.
Exams are heavily textbook based. Doesn't post his notes online. Test questions are really random.
makes jokes an all that in class, but essentially just teaches right out of the textbook. tests are all on totally random, minute details. not recommended.
Fun class to attend as he makes jokes all the time. Notes are not online, but if you wanted to just read the textbook out of class you would still do very well on exams. Two midterms & a final, you need 85% to get an A. Easy course and a good guy to take it with. Make sure you do and remember the readings.
A great prof!he's funny and makes an attempt to make something dry, something bearable. It isn't the most exciting class, but he tries. Exams are quite heavy, but if you go to class and take notes, as well as know the text, you're golden. The text is boring, but reading it pays off, as does attending class! Great class, glad it could be my first!
Make sure you have a friend in the class to bum notes off of if you'll miss a class. Get down all the notes and everything important from the text, and bring some cue cards to go over for an hour or two before exams and you'll be fine. His exams are hard, but if you have your stuff memorized you'll know what he's asking for with his questions.
Really funny and tries to make class interesting. Make sure you have someone to get notes from if you miss class and make sure to keep up with the readings too. Exams are on tiny, seemingly insignificant details.
He is one of the greatest profs I've ever had! He lets you know exactly what he wants from you. Two midterms and a final, not cumulative! Very easy A as long as you attend and take notes. Trust me, don't take this class with anyone but him!
You need to memorize the entire textbook if you want to do well. Don't bother asking him any questions - self conceited, EXTREMELY rude and won't even answer to the question, will use his words to make you feel inferior instead. Interesting class, too much effort for a 100 level.
Didnt buy textbook, huge mistake. Still beat average though.
This man is ridiculous! He is funny but you actually do need to memorize the textbook, including captions. He tests you on the smallest details he can find. As an intro course, it required a lot of work. And definitely do not take this course at 8am!
Great prof. Injects humor into what could be a dry course, but isn't. Immensely enjoyed his class. He clearly has a passion for his profession. No assignments or papers - entire grades are dependent on two midterms and a final but all three tests are quite reasonable as long as you study. Definitely recommend!
He was a great professor! He was knowledgable and hilarious, and his notes were really straightforward. Most of his exam questions were taken directly out of the textbook, so make sure that you read the chapters.
Honestly, the exams are not that hard. Two first midterms are entirely textbook based and if you make notes from the text you'll do just fine. All I did was read the chapters and memorized the definitions listed at the end of each chapter and I did pretty decently. Professor is funny and makes you wanna go to class!
Really enjoyed this class and professor. He had some really entertaining stories from his own experiences. Easy to follow notes and lectures, although notes not posted. Two midterms and final (not cumulative). Midterms are texbook-based so buy the book and do the readings. The final was half class notes half textbook. Marked on a curve. Easy A.
Larose was a great lecturer and kept me engaged for a 3 hr night class, but was snarky and disrespectful to students that asked or answered questions. Sometimes he would cancel office hrs entirely, and there was no other opportunities to get help or view exams. LOTS of material in this course (3 texbooks!!), tough exams but an interesting topic.
Interesting prof, good sense of humour. Interesting class. Minor note taking of PPT headings required. Easy MC exams and not curved. 85 or over is an A so easy A. A plus realistic with some skimming of textbook. ANTHR 101 with Francois Larose is highly recommended! GPA Booster Certified (GBC) course.
He is a nice Prof. with a good sense of humour, I enjoyed attending the lectures. However, the course has a large portion of biological anthropology which i wasn't interested in. Moreover, reading the textbook is required! the exam and the midterms wasn't that easy! He is a nice prof. but I don't recommend taking his classes.
AWESOME PROF AND REALLY REALLY CUTE. LOOKS LIKE A CUTE BEAR
READ TEXT. DO ANTHRO LAB. This will get you 75+ on test, most likely. He cracks hilarious jokes in class. If you've taken him ehhhhhhhhhh (you'll know what I mean). Haha! I like Larose, recommend.
Excellent and hilarious prof. He knows what he's talking about. Midterms are REALLY textbook intensive, especially the second one (IT WAS BRUTAL AND RIDICULOUS). Final was easier than the midterms (mostly from the notes). Would not recommend as an elective for first year engineering students or any students in very demanding faculties.
You literally have to read the entire textbook since all of his exams are solely based off of chapter readings (except the final which has some class notes). First midterm and final were super easy, the second midterm was a bit more tricky. Overall, a pretty easy class
This guy is seriously so funny. He makes the material interesting and is pretty passionate about the subject matter. He can be a bit condescending if you ask dumbirrelevant questions in class, but he is also available after class if needed. Buy. The. Textbook. And. Read. It. It isn't huge though, so don't worry. Overall awesome, take this class.
Francois is an adorable little French man, who is full of things to say and funny jokes to share. He tests on A LOT from the textbook. The 1st midterm focused primarily on class notes, the 2nd was very hard (random dates and facts from the textbook), but the final was easy! Class attendance is mandatory as he does not post notes online.
Easy A w reading. Buyread the textbook for tests and that's it. Skipping the course and reading the textbook exclusively is possible as that's what you'll be tested on. 2 midterms and a final so it can clear up your schedule if you have a busy semester. Only complaint is too many freshmen talking during lectures so sit in front row if you show.
Read the textbook or you won't pass. Both midterms relied heavily on textbook material, it is best to read all the chapters and make your own notes based off of the textbook. The final exam was easier than the two midterms.
One of my favourite profs - very funny and very nice. He really cares about the information and about helping students to do well. I will definitely take another class with him if I have the chance.
Two midterms and one final and they're all MC. He tries to sneak in jokes here and there to keep things interesting. Attendance is mandatory as he does not post his notes. Course Content itself is pretty interesting. Tests do not take lots of effort to get a good grade. Studied a total 1012 hours the whole term and got an A
Dr. Larose is super funny! He makes tons of jokes during his lectures, and he really keeps you interested in the material. He isn't very helpful outside of class, but I found his class was so straight forward that I really didn't need to see him during his office hours anyways. Buy the textbook though, you will need it.
Vast majority of midterms are based on textbooks, usually exact quotes of vocabulary definitions, and some other details. But overall, it's an easy A if you read. That being said, his lectures are amazing, and at times inspirational. Lectures mostly not tested, some lecture notes tested in final, so go to class to copy from his power point.
Has a good sense of humor, fine lecturer and gives notes in lecture ONLY, so go to class. You do need to read the text book as the exam is 50% lecture and 50% textbook, but otherwise, little work is needed for this class.
If you want a GPA booster, this is not the course for you. There are 3 textbooks involved and a lot of reading to do. The tests are 50% lecture and 50% readings. I found the class extremely boring. Would not recommend.
I took Race and Racism with Larose as a night class. He gave great lectures which would keep you engaged for the entire 3 hours. No written assignments, just two midterms and a test with multiple choice and short answer. Tests were easy if you studied a bit, but there is A LOT of reading material, and it is tested equivalently to lecture material.
He got me interested in anthropology so I love that, but looking back I realize that he taught in a very unanthropological way. He told us that magic was basically tricks by the magician who knew they were not doing real magic. Many of his stories/perspectives were not culturally relativistic. I'm glad I did not have him for an upper level.
This prof definitely wants you to fail. Unhelpful and rude. Will actually play with wording on questions to trick you into picking the wrong one. Tells you things to study, so you really focus on that material, not to have a single question on the exam about it! Our class average for both midterms were 53% and 61%. Avoid this class if you can!
2 midterms and 1 final. 3 textbooks that are essential, but a layout is given for the info you need to know. Notes aren't posted to attendance is necessary. He cracks a lot of jokes and makes lectures interesting and understandable. He did such a good job of explaining what Anthropology really is, that I changed my major to Anthropology. Great prof
He made a lot of jokes in the lectures and made it interesting, but he doesn't post lecture notes so attendance is mandatory. Exams were 50-50 textbook and lecture, but he provided a guide as to what to study from the textbooks.
There is a lot of reading for this course, but it's all relevant and interesting. He gives extensive study guides for the readings, which is helpful. He will help with questions but has low tolerance for questions that suggest a person hasn't done the readings/attended lectures. Really liked him and found him funny, but wish he was more polite.
Do NOT recommend this professor. Talked down to the class, and was unprofessional. Long, boring lectures.
Francois is one of my favourite profs, I've had him for a few classes and he is very funny and his lectures are interesting. You can tell he is passionate about what he does.
Dr. Larose can be incredibly condescending, and often answered questions in a sarcastic or ironic tone. Lectures are boring but Dr. Larose pulls the majority of his test questions from factoids he mentioned in passing during a lecture - so make sure you attend. 10/10 would never take another course from him.
Refuses to post lecture notes online and is condescending to students. I would not recommend taking a class with him, especially if you're expecting an easy, GPA boosting class.
His PPT notes are minimal, so type fast to catch all that he says vocally during the lecture. Very intelligent, knowledged man. Interesting lectures. Answers questions clearly, tells funny anectodes along the way. No assignments. 2 midterms, 1 final. Tests extensively from his lectures & textbook, so be prepared and up-to-date with reading along.
I'm surprised this prof doesn't have a better rating. He is a very knowledgable man and explains concepts VERY clearly. He adds in some awkward humour here and there which is nice. His slides are clear and concise but you gotta go to class to get em. Heavy textbook readings but he gives a clear guideline of what you have to know/don't have to know
If you are having an issue with his grading, go into a meeting with him armed - preferably with a reference from the textbook. In the face of obvious errors in his grading or exams, he tends to react intransigently. Not questioning him nearly cost me a letter grade. If you pay attention and attend class, you won't find passing difficult.
I have been touched by his lectures, you don't understand how much he has changed my life. His emphasis on the humans really gets you thinking. Thank you, francois for changing my life
one of my best professors first year! His midterms were super easy, just make sure you read the textbook because a lot of the material is from there. otherwise, great class!!
Dr. Larose's lectures were funny so it made them bearable. I personally did not enjoy the content, so this might've affected how much I enjoyed his teaching. The textbook is very necessary as the tests rely heavily on the readings. His lectures were kind of the bare bones of what you needed to know. He also doesn't put lecture slides online.
This course is more difficult/demanding than 400-level classes I've taken; do not take as a GPA booster. However, it's incredibly worthwhile and Prof. Larose is super passionate about it. DO THE READING- gives you everything you need to know in question packets and if you answer those the exams are not too bad. GO TO CLASS- notes are not posted.
He was a very funny prof, kept me interested. Slides arent posted online but easy to just ask your neighbour for notes so no complaints. He doesnt take attendance but theres the odd question on something he said not in the notes. You have to read the textbook as it contains info you need for the tests. First midterm and final were fairly easy.
Francois was a great lecturer (good for a course with dry/tedious content). Often times he was quite condescending towards students, but it did not affect class content. The midterms were extremely textbook-focused, which was a little disappointing because there is a lot of repetitive reading, but the final was easy compared to the other tests.
Only had two midterms and a final for marks, so I wish there was more to base the mark on. Wasn't a bad lecturer, but I wish he was more interesting at times. Pretty decent class.
His sarcastic humour makes lectures interesting. Doesn't post notes, so attendance is a must. Exams are 50% lecture/50% text, not something you can study for last minute as there's lots of reading and memorizing. He provides study notes for each chapter which is nice. Class is curved. Exams are too detailed based for a 100-level class imo.
Professor Larose was hilarious and you could tell he was passionate about race and racism. Half of the things that you need to know for the exams are based on the textbooks needed for the class and half are from lectures. He doesn't post his notes online which actually made me go to class to get the notes myself. Overall, great prof!
Dr. Larose's class had online quizzes were open book, but a lot of the multiple choice answers in the quizzes had discrepancies with what the textbook actually stated (wrong dates, etc.). The writing assignments were also unclear, as they left out how long the assignment should be, and instructions had spelling errors in them. Easy marker though.
Dr. Larose was a good prof, but he did sometimes give off the vibe that maybe he didn't want to be there, which could affect your motivation a little bit. Did not post slides online. Exams were 50/50 textbooks and lectures (3 different textbooks) The class itself was enlightening. It'll change your view on the arbitrary categorization of races
Some of the material is dry at times, but he does his best to keep the class entertained with his jokes and commentary. He doesn't post any notes online, so go to class and/or get the notes from a friend. As long as you pay attention, do the additional readings, and go through the study guide for the midterms and final you'll get a great mark
Lectures great, informative, he's entertaining and passionate. Seems the lecture slides have been the same over last 6-7 years! 90% weight of course is on tough multiple choice tricky too. Despite studying hard I did poorly and worrisome as these tests are 90% of grade! disappointed that we are still in 21st C assessing on how much you memorize
The slideshows he uses for notes can get pretty dull sometimes, a lot of the cool and important information is usually said verbally. He would pop in some jokes every once in a while, which was helpful for an 8:00 AM class. Tells you exactly which topics are going to be on the exam. However, a textbook is necessary to do the midterms
Exam questions are heavily from the textbook. He tries to make his lectures interesting which I respect, cause some of the material is a bit boring. Everyone has told me Anthro is the easiest course in the world, but his class was more on the normal difficulty level rather than insane easy. Also has a french accent but still easy to understand.
Absolutely loved his class! Discussions were always fascinating and he seemed super into his topic and extremely knowledgeable. Exams were fair but you must go to class to succeed in his class since he doesn't post any of his materials. Left with a solid understanding on what he had instructed.
Took this class looking for an interesting elective/ gpa booster, which was a terrible idea. First midterm is not bad however if you haven't gone through the textbook with a fine tooth comb memorizing small details the second midterm and final will be very difficult. Never really knew what topics to focus on.
I had him for Race and Racism, he was alright but you definitely have to work for your grade. I enjoyed his lectures sometimes as he was entertaining and funny. The midterm and final were worth a ton in the end so it was really important that you studied (A lot!)
Emailed multiple times, and he didn't answer majority of them. He once replied to tell me that he would post a review, and never did. He is not a bad teacher just very lazy and a bit harsh at times.
I love this guy. Explains concepts very well and is clear about what to know for exams. Very knowledgeable and caring. 2 midterms and a final. He's an excellent choice!
Amazing prof. Genuinely cares about the info he teaches. Clear about what will be on exams and easy exams. 5 quizzes, 2 midterms, 2 assignments & a final. All quizzes/exams are open-book, but have time limits so it's harder to cheat. 3 textbooks, all necessary (text only Qs). Must listen to lectures & take notes. Assigned videos for assignments.
Just use the textbook to answer his study guide, watch the lectures and you should be good!
Textbook reading were long and covers alot of irrelevant information that you are not graded on. Lecture are awesome, I could listen to him talk for hours, he makes jokes and is clear in explaining the material. Assignments are relatively simple, quiz are hard because the time limits is 30questions for 45 minutes. Exams are similar, not enough time
He has. agood esense of humour. Mak sure you do the rading bc his exams and quizzes are based on material covered in lecture and text. The scale is lower for this class so you are very likely to do well. he also has assignments which are documentaries you watch and answer 1-2 questions for. Very easy marks.
