I love argote freyre, his first semester at kean has been a great experience for me. He is knowledgeable, fair, humourous. He also has a way of mixing up the class a bit to avoid boredom!!! Take Freyre, he is one of the better professors at Kean.
This professor does not give any notes, he makes students lecture eachother. He assigns papers with confusing requirements. Also he is a extremely hard grader.
I dont know what anyone is thinking who said he is a good teacher. He lets the students lecture, so you don't know if what they're saying is right or wrong. He is unclear, midterm was hard. On the final, MAKE SURE TO KNOW THE REVIEW. The whole test is on the reveiw.
Someone actually thought this guy was good? Listen, he already thinks your ideas are crap, so don't bother. Students lecture each other, so you've no idea of the material you really need. Midterm is ridiculous. Syllabus is useless. He's very unhelpful. I, along with others, found him to be very biased. Bottom line, this guy sucks. F.

Frank is the worst in the Hist Dept. He represents the worst of the worst, I had to drop his class, he is unclear, unfair and way too demanding, hard grader, confusing and useless, you learn absolutely nothing in his class but his resume which sucks, who ever said he is good is on some sort of crack, dont take him unless you want to lower your GPA s
worst teacher i ever had
This professor is excellent. Our class has amazing heated discussions; it's a double period and I am almost never bored.
Dr. Freyre goes way beyond the call of duty as a teacher. I have been struggling with some of the readings and he has gone out of his way to share ideas. He has expressed an interest in my career and interests. I see him as a positive role model.
I have learned so much about Cuba and Latin America it is unbelievable. The guy is an encyclopedia of knowledge. The films from revolutionary Cuba are great. He basically wants you to do the reading, if you do you are fine. If you don't -- you are dead meat.
WOOOAAAA....these people are beyond lying...i think they want ya'll 2 fail....he iz an unhelpful guy, he iz unclear about all his assignmentz, he gives u these stupid surprise quizzes!! and his midterm n final iz so stupid...i would not recommend u 2 take him, but maybe itz juss me
I'm a straight A student and I had to drop this jerk's class because of his teaching abilities, or lack thereof. This guy has no direction with assignments, the class has no clue what they're supposed to do, the midterm was absolutely ridiculous. His personality is complete garbage. Malicious. I wish I could describe him without obscenities.
We have debated race, immigration, terrorism, education and women's issues in a very thorough way. He is one of my favorite. The people criticizing him are a bunch of losers. I noticed there were a bunch of people in our class that were never prepared and, of course, they failed. People get mad because he tests on readings. Read you lazy people!
He breaks the class into themes and you spend 4-5 classes on each theme. Section on race was my fave. Nice Guy. Fair assignments.
Only whiners and slackers would complain about Prof. Freyer. He is fun and easy-going. Always prepared and interesting. I would take again.
the worst professor i've ever taken at kean. do NOT take!
Oh My GOD the class just flys by. A double period, but it really goes quick. Music, videos, lectures, student discussions -- he utilizes everything. Funny and entertaining
He's a jerk. Basically, PARTICIPATE A LOT. I got a B- on both exams, a B on a paper, and C+ on another. I participated on my group projects, and he gave me a D! Jerk lowered my gpa..
not very helpful but loves to tell you about his accomplishments
Simply the Best Prof. EVER
Even though it was a double period the class did not drag. Everyone debated everything. I learned more than I thought I would.
Im shocked at the negative comments. Prof Freyer is a good teacher and a even better person. He looks out for the students and is interested in your lives if you talk to him. He is not difficult and even admits it. Reading assignments that are interesting. Double period flys! Discussions, films, Q and A sessions. Excellant. Take.
what a tool. tests are impossible, makes everyone do group presentations like at leats 4 times. hes a mean little guy who will rip you apart if u dont know the stuff.
Fabulous class. Really demanding prof with NO NONSENSE approach to slackers, but you learn more than any other course and makes Latin America come alive. PARTICIPATE in class or DIE! I loved this guy.
i really liked this professor...he was a nice guy and class went by pretty fast...this class is do your own thing... do your work read the articles and you will pass...if not you might not do well at all. his pop quizzes are kinda hard tests easy..good professor...id sugg. to take him
Great Professor! Very clear! You need to read the books and the handouts because this info is on his tests! Do the debates, cause it gets you off of doing his final paper. Take notes and practice the maps and know exactly where the cities are on them because he's picky about it, and you will ace this class!
I loved it when he started to discuss the Mexican Revolution -- Zapata and Pancho Villa. Cool stuff. Great movies. Tough grader. Make sure you prepare for your presentations. He will let you stand there like a babbling idiot. That was worth the price of admission. I recommend if you are serious about doing the work.
He is not clear on work that needs to be done. The items he puts on the exam are not what you talk about in class. Gives you many books to buy. It was pricy to have to buy 5 books. Would not take him again and I love History!
He is simply the best -- I will take him any chance I get!!!!!
Great professor! Easy midterm and final, a few papers and extra credit. Always friendly and caring towards students.
I have him now -- just great
Excellent Pofessor. I have taken him twice already an will b taking him again next semester. I have noticed that those who are saying that he is a hard and awful professor are freshmens who just got out of high school and think college is a piece of cake. You do have to do your readingd and you ACTUALLY LEARN.
I had Frank for Latinos in the United States class. He is one of the worst professors I've ever had. He is very arrogant, and totally into himself. He gives a very one sided view and if you do not agree with him don't bother opening up your mouth. The final paper is 20 pages and absolutely impossible to manage. There is a mandatory field trip. RUN!
take the class if you want to hear about how great he is and the things he has done. very knowledgable but comes off as an academic snob.
The best! Thanks Frank! GT
This guy is politically correct almost to a fault. If you even said the word "native" when talking about the Aztec or Mayans, he would stop you to correct you to say "indigenous people." He was very friendly and helpful, however.
Simply wonderful -- No one better
The guy is thoroughly prepared. I could not wait to get to class.
A class act. He prepares carefully and thoroughly for every class
very nice and helpful. A little disorganized, but def. cares a lot about what he is teaching. Easy to talk to, likes student participation. Two 4-page essays, midterm, and final with extra credit.
Viva Fidel! Viva MadMen! Frank's the best. If you're not there to give it 100%, then get the hell out of his class...to many lazy whiners here. Keep it up Frank!
Horrible professor. The essays you have to do on the books are incredibly annoying because of the way he forces you to format them
Good luck with this professor!Super disorganized!Difficult keeping up with syllabus.Besides the 3 books to read, you'll get many packets to read in addition;get a binder.5 pop-quiz on the readings(there's ALOT of reading) quizzes on books and handouts.Plus midterm & Final;2 papers(4pages)This is a 2000 level class,I DON'T think so!Skip it!Skip Him!
Not a good professor. Does not give back grades too quickly, the reading quizzes that were worth 20% of the final grade were awful, he told us what the readings were about after we took the quizzes, did not tell us what to look for, even with study groups everyone still failed the quizzes. You need to participate a lot in class in order to do well.
History 2304 Colonial Identity Professor Argotte-Freyre has become one of my favorite professors here at Kean University. He is a great Professor he is straight forward and makes class fun His quizes are hard so make sure you read but his midterm and final are not bad at all. Study The Study Guide and you will be fine. I call him the Aztec King
Not sure why people are complaining. Great teacher. Yes, you read a lot, but he tells you everything that's going to be on the mid term and final. You will actually learn a lot from the man. Overall, no complaints from me. Do your work and you'll get a good grade.
Great class, and even greater professor. Knows the material well and provides great insight. If you do the reading and participate in class you'll get a good grade. Slackers stay clear! Those who want to learn about the history of Cuba, you MUST take Frank's class.
He is not helpful at all and takes forever to return any assignments.
Awful grader. You have to basically memorize the entire textbook and recite it on your exam otherwise you fail. Don't take him.
I took Prof Freyre last year for Cuba and got a D. The second time around I took Brazil and got an A. Your grade really is determined by the amount of effort you put into it. I slacked off the last time but this time I did all the assigned reading and studied for the exams and it paid off. Recommend for those interested in Latin American History.
I have learned a lot about Brazil as a result of taking this class. He is a very knowledgeable professor. I put much effort in studying for this class but it was well worth it!
Great professor! If you work hard you'll get an A.
Though I'm getting high grades in this class, there are negatives. The paper format is terrible. His personality is great, but I feel like his lectures are rushed even though the class 3 hours. Definitely not the best way to teach history. As a junior, I've had many classes and this class doesn't impress me. Wouldn't recommend him.
Although you can learn from him the work load is quite a bit. He has you read through multiple books every week. He doesn't exactly give you homework but he has you make up for it by doing 2 papers for both the midterm and final. He also has you define about 10-15 word definitions and he has you work on world maps. Take him if you want a challenge.
I have to warn those who decide to take this Professor to be prepared for him to say the F-word in every class. Some students might find it amusing but others may find it to be unprofessional. No real homework but you will have to do 2 essays during every exam along with maps and vocabulary words to define. You will have to present a Mexican state
Each class was very rich in material. He usually lectured or led class discussion for about an hour. There were usually PowerPoints from different students about the different Latin American countries. I did not even know where Latin America was before this class.
Good professor. There is a lot of reading involved, but that is the case in most history courses. Has a passion for history which makes the class more interesting. Two papers, midterm, and final. It's not one of those classes you can fall asleep in, he's too loud for that. Overall I enjoyed his class I would take him again.
Very good professor. Opens your eyes to many of the injustices commited throughout the world, especially in Latin America. My only peeve is that he should lecture more and small talk less. His knowledge and anecdotes are far more interesting than a discussion on someone's vacation or other non-sense..
A really thoughtful guy! I liked the fact that he gave you the Mexican perspective instead of Mexico from a US point of view. Recommend him.
AVOID!!!!! Many people in the class had to repeat him
Won't pass unless your Cuban! That is all he talks about
Those who didn't do well are the ones who didn't do their homework. You MUST read or you will miss out on a lot. Excellent teacher, really passionate about History. Do your readings and you will get an easy A.
Those of say that this guy is good don't know what they are talking about. His online classes are easy because he don't do anything but his actual in class classes are hard and he can't teach to save his life. If you a good grade in his actual class then learn to start sucking up to him.
Only thing we are graded on are papers...... If you don't do well or don't do what he expected, you're doomed.
He is a bad professor, even the History majors try to avoid taking him and the ones who ended taking him wished that they had dropped the class. Most of the people who take him are the ones who had failed his class and is there because they had to repeat the class. His online classes are easy though but I wouldn't recommend taking him in class.
This was my 2nd time having Argote-Freyre as my teacher. Extremely fun class to participate in ONLY if you do your readings. If you don't do your reading, you won't be as enthused. There is a lot of mandatory readings. If you don't read, it will definitely show in your work. He gave us 2 books that were mandatory to read be prepared to read 500+pgs
Worst professor I have ever taken. Took him for history online and he was so lazy. Only sent one email the whole semester which was the syllabus and was the toughest grader i have ever had. I am an A student and he gave me my first D ever. And I did all the work. Avoid!!!!
Freyre expects you to read books and write papers, but isn't that what college is about?? Those who don't pass usually don't do the readings or the papers that are due. I thought he presented the material well and knows his stuff very well.
Take a Latin America history class with him. Major countries that the class was about was South America and Mexico but every class the professor would only talk about how great Cuba was and that Cubans were more successful than any other Latinos in the world. Someone in the class got offended by that and ask him to stop but never listen.
Took him twice. The first time was for History of Brazil, which wasn't that bad just boring but when I took for History of Mexico, this guy was just horrible. The class was boring overall but this guy wouldn't even talk about Mexico. He would talk about how Puerto Rico stole the Cuban flag and everything about Cuba. I'm not latino but it was wrong
Like any college class requires that you actually DO your work. read and participate to earn a good grade.I really loved having Dr. Argote-freyre as a professor. I learned so much more than i thought i even knew about my culture and for that I am so grateful.
Not helpful at all.
Excellent professor, very knowledgeable...."tells it how it is" doesn't mince his words when it comes to issues concerning social justice...a voice for the Latino community
He's a very good professor, and definitely knows his subject matter well. Yes, there is reading to be done, but this is a history course. As long as you go to class, pay attention, participate, and prepare for your tests and papers adequately, you will do fine. Also, he is a very nice person, so don't be intimidated by the reviews on here.
I'm glad I took this class; Dr. Argote-Freyre was engaging and his lectures were very informative. He focused mostly on how race & ethnicity were viewed in different societies across time but also analyzed religion, technology, and trade. There were 2 exams and an essay in which the students explained how they and their families have experienced race
Did ok in the class, certainly a lot of work for the grade but if you do the reading and put in the time you will pass. With that, he is extremely impressed with himself, and I think expects you to love him as much as he does.
This professor was the worst professor I have ever taken. He doesn't reply to emails and he is rude with his comments. He is so full of himself its annoying. Simply avoid him because he doesn't care what you think, he only wants you to say what he thinks its right.
There are professors at Kean who will remind you to wipe your ass. Professor Argote-Freyre is not one of them. Print the syllabus, do the readings, and engage in class. Not an easy A, but doable.
Yes, he assigns many readings & there are lots of questions on the exams but this is not a high school class. You must be willing to be a serious college student. There are some practice map quizzes but they'll help you for the exams. You also have to write one paper (4-5pages). Participate in class, prepare for the assignments and you'll do well.
Although he is a very tough grader, Dr. Argote-Freyre does impart a lot of info about the Aztecs & Mayans. He seems to know everything about the economy, culture, technology, religion, and social structure of these civilizations. And also why their legacies continue to endure & how they were affected by the European conquest.
The information Dr. Argote-Freyre provided on the Aztecs and Mayas was amazing. He touched on everything from human sacrifice to warfare, agriculture and artwork. Funniest moments were when he confronted students who thought their architecture was built by aliens. Cray, Cray.
Tough grader, uses no rubric. Doesn't go over readings until after tests, and doesn't answer questions. He is more concerned with embarrassing students than in answering real student questions. Never ever take him, everything I learned I taught myself from the book. He doesn't even read the books he assigns, and his facts are conflicting with books
Yes he is a tough grader and unlike other professors he will give you a lower grade if you quote sentences from books which he didn't require you to read in the paper assignments. However, Dr. Argote-Freyre knows so much about Cuban history that an issue regarding "his facts are conflicting with books" didn't exist in the course I took.
This Professor does not take students' academic futures seriously, or their grades seriously. He expects you to be an expert to the subject, and tests are all fill in the blank. Every one. He does not like to answer questions, and gives conflicting information. During his lectures there are no power points, no hand out worksheets, just him talking.
Professor Freyre provided clear grading guidelines. One of the best classes I ever had at Kean. He provided a worksheet every two weeks on items of importance. Tough but fair grader.
In the Worlds of History class Dr. Argote-Freyre made the students largely concentrate on how race and ethnicity were perceived by various civilizations over the centuries. He seemed to have patience with answering questions; when there were many students, like 5 for example, who raised their hands he would answer all 5 questions.
Dr. Argote-Freyre provided the students with an impressive amount of info about Carribean history. He compared and contrasted the Spanish, British, and French colonial systems. He discussed how the Carribean nations became independent & their complicated relations with the US. And he analyzed their economic, political, and cultural issues.
wow...
Lecture heavy, no handouts or PowerPoints. Barely any tests. Expects you to be expert of this class from early on.
Makes you think the class is easy from the beginning and expects to to be an expert from pretty much day 1. No PowerPoints or handouts, only lectures. Barely any tests. Expect to read the books
I took Freye for two separate classes, during the lectures I believed his exams and papers were going to be easy. I can say he is a very difficult grader. He looks for support from the text and he wants you to answer every question given within the essay prompt he gives you. The only way to pass this class is to read and write solid papers!
This professor is extremely tough, but don't let that get in the way of you choosing to take his class or not. I learned more in this class, not just the content area, but in general. So if you want a challenge and learn some valuable lessons try him out. He's not for everyone, but if you try you can succeed.
He is a fair professor. He gives more than enough opportunities to raise your grade. Though he does give a ton of reading, you have to read if you want to pass. He has a journalism background and is passionate about Cuban history, so he will grade you hard. This isn't a class that you can slack in, read the books & write solid papers & you'll pass
Best Professor I ever had. Very thorough. Made me work like a beast. Very respectful of students. A real gentleman.
Argote-Freyre is a very tough grader. It is true he does expect you to be an expert, listen to the other reviews. As a person he is nice and I could have a conversation with him but as a professor his grading is too hard and assigns too much reading as if you have no other classes. I especially disliked getting emails at 10pm the day before class
Truly the worst professor at Kean University
If you do the reading you will be fine. He expects you to do it. Learned a lot.
Dr. Argote-Freyre is a tough grader but he is fair. His lectures are relevant and insightful. Everyone taking his classes should expect to work. He personally went out of his way to help me when the University failed in their course curriculum. If you are looking to be a historian or a teacher you should take Dr. Argote-Freyre and pay attention!
Great guy, but he is not a respecter of persons when it comes to grading. The type of guy to smile at you, shake your hand, and ask about your family, then fail your paper. Be prepared to read a lot, and participate to show you've read the book as well as writing solid papers. You will mostly be graded on papers and he grades those very strictly.
Class lecture was always engaging and fun; overall I felt I learned a lot about the subjects covered but he is a very tough, sometimes arbitrary grader, especially on the essays. Read carefully and regurgitate back to him his lecture tying it into the material and you will be ok. The tests arent too bad you just have to study. Great guy.
Took for his Maya/Aztec class. Wow he is super knowledgeable and a great lecturer. The class was laid out very nicely on blackboard. Absolutely no trickery in his class but you must do the reading. Great guy and professor!
An amazing teacher, the lectures will definitely broaden your perspective on history. But, a very tough grader, he grades you by how much he expects of you as well as what he would have done if he were you. So if you are a student who actively participates (which is graded) he expects only the best. Also, you are graded by only 5 assignments.
The best professor I've encountered at Kean thus far. Sure he's not the easiest grader, but if you want to learn take him. He's a sweet guy and his lectures are interactive. This is the only class I pay attention in and don't look at the clock. (he doesn't stay the full time btw) Quizzes are extra credit and grade consists of 3 papers. Take him.
This bozo gave me a D expected me to read 3 books cover to cover in a class that had 4 people in it. It was a HALF SEMESTER COURSE. I deserved an A. I took him before he is a nice old man from New Jersey but he's still a complete bozo with a good sense of humor.
Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money taking this professor hes a clown.
Great in class but barley goes over the readings for the essays and the essays are tough as well
One of the best history professor at Kean! makes you really appreciate the material and allows for you to nerd out! The Aztecs class he only gives two papers and the rest of your grade is based on quizzes every 2 weeks-ish. does not go over the required reading in class fr but is entirely what the papers are based on. def going to miss this class!
Dr. Argote-Freyre is an amazing professor who has excellent lectures and leads great class discussion, I learned a lot. Be prepared to read and write to pass the class, as he gives papers which are based on the readings. He also gives geography quizzes, so study for those. Overall his expectations are reasonable for a college course of this level.
super knowledgeable, super charismatic, super nice, but his class is reading reading reading and writing pretty long and complex papers, he answers his emails promptly,
Professor Argote-Freyre is engaging in class, but the readings and essays can be challenging. Staying on top of the work is key. unstuck study proved helpful for preparing for quizzes and papers.
I suggest that you .. run
