swear too much during lecture
Should stick to being the economist interviewed for the evening news on Global.

Don't take him to pick up his Toyota... he still will only give you a B
Sometimes way too mean
absolutely hilarious

Takes great pride in being an ****. Extremely rude to all students, ill prepared for class, ruined the course. Horrible, bad, awful. And totally loves the pretty girls. Quite disgraceful to our class of 03.
Atkins is an awesome econometrics teacher. Don't know about the other courses though.
Very unprofessional!
Very professional! Awesome econometrics prof.
Very funny. Bark way worse than his bite

His classes are very easy
Very helpful and a generous marker.
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!! He KNOWS his stuffs and very smart!! One of the best econ profs i ever had! He doesn't trick you on his tests unlike PETER TRACEY who didn't even get a PhD in econ and thinks he's all that!!!
There needs to be communication between profs. I had kneebone for 303 and now I'm left completely lost. Gets off topic too easily, and doesnt really.... explain much. I dont care about how to make a graph on excel for gods sakes.. its not 311!
Atkins is a discrace to teachers. He spends half his class time talking about his personal life(his Toyota commercial) In both classes, he barely gets any material done and then throws completely unfair questions on final to bring down class average.
atkins is a **** and a ****, not very professional, was probably once a brilliant professor before he became jaded and bitter unfortunately I wasn't around then,
Rude and awful. "I've been studying economics all my life, so I don't know **** about cars. That's why I bought a Toyota." Yeah that's really something to be proud of. I hear they're looking for a banjo player in an upcoming remake of Deliveranc
Frank is great. He's got a weird sense of humor, but outside of class time he's actaully really helpful. Most of the people he's arrogant and rude to do really well, becuase they know hes only kidding. Thought his tests were fair.
Biggest **** of a prof ever. Totally disrespectful, makes inappropriate jokes. Completely favours pretty girls. A disgrace to post-secondary education. And last I knew, he owned an Acura Integra... So maybe the Toyota commercial got him a free one.
aside from ridiculing certain members of the class, i had a blast taking 359 with him during summer session... particularly the "gladdened" portions of class where i laughed at a mofugging liggard of a mary in my class. Easy marks... just know ur beggar thy neighbor for the final.. and ur set

If you are of lower intelligence and lack any sense of humor you will not like Dr. Atkins. As can be seen by previous comments from others, they are indeed missing one or the other. He is clear, upfront and more than courteous with regards to questions. I enrolled in his other classes. He rocks.
Haha, I deffinitely disagree strongly with the last comment. I have a sense of humour, and took an A- in his class. Yet check my ratings. Hmmm, good theory, but no go. Atkins' 'sense of humour' is totally based on offensive humour - the kind fit for close friends drinkin' O.E. He is NEVER prepared!
Seriously people. If you don't do good in his classes, you must be stupid. He hands it to you on a silver platter, and then some. IF you go to class, and take notes on what he says, you'll do fine. This dude knows a ton and is funny as crap to boot.
I was initally worried about this class but came out with a decent grade. He's not a bad prof but not a great one either. The advantage in taking 315 with him is that he babbles on so much about other stuff that the workload is greatly reduced compared to other sections.
Got a decent grade, his marker sucks (assignments.. etc), yes he does favour hot girls, and yes he does include the odd racial comment, but all and all if you want to learn - this is the class for you; aren't you paying to learn?
If you like Holden, you'll like Atkins. He taught Willy everything he knows.
really good prof. you gotta like his style though, but he is really intelligent and knows his stuff and makes it fun for you to learn
the guy is brilliant! likes to discuss current events some much that he'll rather do a whole lecture on it then teach, midterms were easy cause he repeats the same material over and over again till its sunk in your head, short group assignments . overall got an A for showing up to class
Great prof if you like his style, outspoken to say the least.Midterms and exams aren't too difficult as he repeats lots of questions. He's willing to discuss things in class which is nice to. Too bad he's going on sabatical

I learned nothing from his class. he only talks about the phone call with Steven Harper or he might be slected for the Nobel Prize stuff. Who does he think he is
great guy!! loved the class and the midterms were easy which is always a bonus!

Very clear, straight-forward lecturer. Unfortunately, he's also very boisterous and borderline offensive at times. Still, the lectures are always worth attending for his antics.

If you go to class, and take the time to get help if you need it, you will do well in his class. If he see's that you are willing to work he will help you as much as possible.

Great guy, interesting lectures. His personality sometimes leads to him making rather insulting or innaproppriate comments to students from time to time, but that actually makes class fun to attend. Exams are extremely fair and he explains the material that will be tested very clearly so you always know what kind of questions will be on the exam.
His lectures are disorganized and often break out into politically biased tangents. He can be rude and offensive which detracts from lectures. If you want a laugh then this is the class for you. However if you want to learn we only covered five chapters because most lectures were spent on rants and teaching took place sporadically in between.
Atkins can say offensive and loaded comments, but I have the utmost respect for him. Atkins is a man who doesn't suffer fools, and if you're one you won't like him. Tests are very fair and short answer/essay based. Too much excel on assignments though.
Dr.Atkins is definitely an interesting person. Classes are rarely boring, he can come off as a tad offensive but is willing to help you to understand and improve your grade if you see him personally. He can be moody, but all-around a good prof. Tests are fair but the material is challenging.
Honestly you probably only have to go to class before midterms. Otherwise you will waste your time attending a useless rambling lecture. The material on the tests is straight from the text book, review that and you should be fine.
this guy,,,,really don't wanna comment on him...extremely rude and discriminated. likes to **** instead of teaching. really waste my time...sucks...not an easy class, choose someone else but NEVER HIM!!!
Here is a hint for anyone taking his class. Midterms and finals are constantly recycled. Get as many old exams as possible, recognize common questions and you will not be disappointed. Good teach, very "different" approach. If you can take his comments with a grain of salt you will do fine...
took econ 303 & 359 with him. He goes through course material slowly to make sure the class understands it fully. Not everything will be covered. Use textbook as a backup, just attend lectures. Exams are fair, his classes have 2 midterms and 2 assignments
I took both econ 303 and 359 with Dr. Atkins and I have to say that he is a great professor. I know that he usually gets carried away by current events topics and that he teaches very slow and does not cover a lot in his classes but he makes sure that the students learn relevant topics that can be applied in the real world. The students that did no
This guy claims his success as a professor from teaching Prime Minister Harper in the past. Having this title under his belt, he can be as lazy, rude, and arrogant as he wants to be. If possible, avoid this joker's 359 class at all cost because he will only bicker about his life rather than teach you economics. He is by far the worst Econ teacher.
I definitely agree with the last post. Whenever you need help, he storms out of the room ASAP. On top of that, his office hours are only from 8am-10am two days a week. He also has problems keeping himself organized. He doesn't follow the course outline, and neither does he know which section of the course he is teaching half of the time. Crap prof!
I don't know why this guy is so upset all the time. Whenever he shows up to class, he's as red as a tomato, his veins are popping out of his forehead, and sometime you'll see a few bruises on his face. I don't know if it's his gimmick to be a surly teacher or not, but if he wants to become a better teacher he should start acting more professional.
Frank Atkins would be great teaching at a Clown College. If you want a decent teacher for ECON 395, I would prefer taking it with Marian Miles or Eugene Choo. Word of mouth, I heard he's also a terrible teacher for ECON 359. Which isn't a big surprise at all!
Explains things clearly and about 5 times. Pay attention to sample questions before midterms. great sense of humour - Grumpy type. Lots of current events discussion to make it relevant. Go to class, learn the concepts and you will do well. Makes econ easy. Enjoyable class, enjoyable prof. Made me like macro econ!
This was my first experience taking a class from Dr. Atkins-& boy it was an experience! He does go way off topic and probably doesn't cover all the required material BUT this kept things interesting! Its not too hard to get a good mark if you study the few major concpets he emphasizes. Show that your putting in the effort & you'll do fine
USE-LESS! Does he get to paid to be a clown or does he get paid to be an economics professor? If he gets paid to be a clown, I hope none of my tuition is going towards it.
I don't care what the haters say, Dr. Atkins is an awesome professor. He made me love macroeconomics. Yes he can be lazy, arrogant, and offensive but that's Atkins for you. He explains everything clearly and makes sure students get the concepts. Just go to class, take notes from his rambling lectures, read the textbook and you will get an A!
Either you like Atkins or not, but so far he's about the only teacher who actually makes economics (or any other course) interesting for me. If you go to the lectures and take the time to learn the concepts you will do well. He'll will clarify any concepts you don't understand by teaching them in different ways.
This class did not prepare me for anything at higher level macro. Is frequently late and dismisses early. A very disappointing and frustrating experience.
Very clear in explaining concepts. Believe it or not, I think he actually cares about how students do in his class.
If you are easily offended, he's not for you. As for me, finally I was entertained in university. He's satirical, interesting, and straightforward. He doesn't respond to emails, but will answer any question as many times as you ask it. His assignments, midterms, and final, aren't hard so long as you go to class. What a great prof. thanks frank!
Atkins is the man. He's hilarious and really gets you going about Econ. His notes in review show up on the midterm and Final. Read/Glance over the book you'll do great. Definitely taking more courses with Atkins!
Interesting and funny prof that keeps his lectures entertaining. Uses current events to make the material relevant. Follows the text book pretty close as well (which I liked) and overall felt like I had a better understanding of macro. If you like organization and need structure in your classes, however, I would not recommend.
Frank Atkins, the biggest of many reasons why the University of Calgary Economics department has such a bad reputation.
Atkins is my favorite prof. He may come off "hard" but is down to earth if you talk to him. He actually teaches you about the material in a way that relates to the outside world. Need to attend class to do well. Book is not necessary but VERY helpful. Learned a lot. Would take a course with him again.
What a guy. You won't see another prof like this at the UofC. He makes macro interesting. Attend class and he'll give you questions on the exams (without saying he is, ofcourse). His book is pretty good. Happy I took the class with him and will be in his 359 class next semester.
Atkins has one of the biggest egos seen in a teacher, which lacks any solid foundation. He is essentially a babbling old man who uses the same sayings day in and day out. Put your hard earned money to good use and choose another professor.
Dr. Atkins is very inappropriate and disrespectful in a classroom environment. While Dr. Atkins is a knowledgeable professor, he does not develop a classroom environment conducive to learning and frequently makes inappropriate remarks. I would not take another of his classes or recommend him.
Atkins is the Gregory House of the University of Calgary.
His class helps me a lot. You can learn some 'real' stuff from his Econ359. Strongly recommend
Atkins makes what would be dull subject matter interesting, and although he does have a "unique" style of teaching, he makes course material easy to understand. To anybody who was/is offended by his classroom demeanor, good luck in the real world...
Assignments were easy and answers were right in the text. Midterms were SUPER easy, 2 short answers word for word from tutorials (DON'T MISS THOSE!) and an "essay" that comes from the assignment. The final is where he is going to get you, short ans. are like the practice Q's, but the essay is from lectures Bonus Q asks for a event from that week.
Very hard marker, assignments were easy. Textbook is a must, and don't skip if you intend to pass.
By far the best Econ prof I've had. If you are easily offended don't take his class but one of the most helpful profs. Tests are very straightforward. If you know how to use the resources available to you, you will succeed. And BUY the textbook
He is a bit disorganized, he started very slow then sped up after the first midterm. The assignments are marked easily. The midterms are marked much harder. He does mark easier on the final. Kinda of ornery and jaded, but funny.
Not easy, but not hard. He is a bit of a goof/really messed, depending on how you look at it. Ask him questions because he is passionate about econ and will engage you in the conversation which is the best part. Assignments are easy, midterm is super easy, final is challenging but manageable. GO TO CLASS!!! He will know if you don't.
I am not really sure what I learned in this class but I enjoyed it. I thought he hated me for the first half but then I realized it's how he teases. you will do fine if you show up, do your assignments and study.
One of my favourite profs. the jokes get old but they're always entertaining. He loves a good econ chat and is a fair marker
One of my favorite econ profs. He can be a bit disorganized which some people aren't used to, however people shouldn't be mad, just because he's not spoon feeding you answers. He makes you think in his exams. I really enjoyed his class a lot especially for it being 9am, such a funny guy.
Atkins does a good job teaching the material, he provides a lot of hints and doesn't teach a whole lot of math. However, he is somewhat disorganized, the class felt like a repeat of Econ 301 and a lot of duplicated material. Omitted an entire chapter. Assignment instructions can be vague. Is a hard marker.
Smart and serious, but funny, one of my most memorable profs
