BORING
Good teacher never really had to show up for class did i pass..Um..LOL no but WHO CARES! [email protected]
very fussy with the papers....Make sure you write down essays without voicing your opinion...but rather talking in depth about the topic. EASY MID TERM --dont know about the final...in about 2 weeks
Yes,perhaps his lectures are boring, but the material is interesting!!!He gives you info that's going to be on exams! Why to complaint?Papers-I'm sorry but someday we all need to learn how to write them!-Problems?- go &get help,he's available.

The midterm was alright. The final was really hard--essay questions are the worst. No animation...so, LECTURES ARE BORING!!! Papers are on philosophers and should be factual. Good luck staying awake. If you need the core credit, go for it.
friendly, but lectures were dull
There are many better history professors at Loyola, so take 101 from one of them. Biletz is pretty boring. To make things worse, I had him for a night class. It was 2 1/2 hours of him droning on and on. He was also a fairly difficult paper grader.
Prof. Biletz is honestly one of the best History teachers I have ever met. I love him. He is tough, but I learned more in one semester of his history class than any other history class I have ever taken.
Boring.... Boring.... Boring. I would much rather prefer being graded on tests rather than papers.. I feel that the more objective a teacher can be, the more the students can excel.
okay.....I would rather eat **** than have to sit through his class. his exams are extremly hard... you need to know every little detail. For the Mid-Term...only one person got an A on the test...that is out of a class of 65 students... take a diff prof.
This man is the most boring professor I have ever encountered. What's annoying is he managed to make interesting subjects dull and uninteresting. The only people in this class that seemed to do well were philosophy majors, and this was history!
He's horrible, boring, and expects way too much for a 101 class. I would recommend not taking his class.
very nice guy, obviously know a lot about history. lectures are really boring, just him pacing back and forth across the room, lecturing. write 3 essays, kind of a hard grader, very particular. but, still a nice guy.
His lectures are clear and interesting BUT his grading policies are hard and often sketchy. Usually unable to properly explain why you received a certain grade and you are thus confused on what he actually expects. Must know ENTIRE textbook w/ dates!
Does not budge, is not fair and the final is a nightmare. Give yourself a break--take ANYBODY ELSE for history!
It was hard to pay attention in lecture. They weren't very creative/entertaining. The tests were pretty standard, but he's picky about learning dates for everything. The essays weren't that bad.

you guys are insane, he's not a bad teacher at all. I'm never in class punching the clock, i'm always somewhat interested and i'm always busy taking notes (occupying my mind) So far i've done well on his tests and i'm not an A student.
A Nightmare.Makes u read three novels that are philosophy novels in general. A very hard grader and can't explain what he really wants in his tests. DON'T TAKE HIM FOR HISTORY!!!!!
Lectures were boring, tests were unfairly graded sometimes, but in all, he's a good guy. He's excited about history, and you can tell he loves his job. There's no homework, just reading the textbook and novels. Put a little effort in and you can get an A. I did.
His classes are boring. He tells you what he expects on the tests so that you can prepare adequately. Overall I would recommend him because as long as you prepare for the test you will get a good score. Also, you dont really have to read along. Just read the parts you need for the tests.
He tells you what to expect on the tests and the books arent bad...he is really passionate about his work so you learn a lot. He is approachable for help and will understand if you have to be absent. I would recommend his class
Somehow this man gets excited about history. I hate history, but just seeing how excited he was made me pay attention. History is boring, so its gonna be boring...he flings his hands around duing the whole lecture (so its better not to look, you might get dizzy)...Helpful, EasyA
lectures are boring. dont need to read book because he covers material in his lectures. gets excited about history but his voice is monotonic making lectures boring. just study hardcore for the exams and you will be fine. he gives you a heads up of what topics to expect on exam. a do-able class
He's a nice guy, very understanding. Very enthusiastic about his subject. However, I would recommend him for someone who is a history buff or is planning on being a history major/minor.
He's a nice guy.. very flamboyant and enthusiastic about history. He wants you to know the dates of every event. kind of a tough grader. He's mainly good for those who LOVE history.
I have no idea how a man can get so excited about history, but somehow he finds a way to! He is a very flamboyant but a nice guy who loves his history. There are two tests, a paper, and 1 final exam. He is a fairly hard grader but its still easy to do well if you study. He makes you study WAY more than necessary for exams, but I still got a B tho.
If youre looking for a class where you can catch up on some sleep this one will probably be your best choice. His lectures are soo boring and its hard to follow his train of thought especially when your trying to take notes. Definately not one of Loyola's finest teachers!
Best professor ever! He'll lose his train of thought sometimes but it's nothing too confusing. His love of his subject definitely shine through in class and I was kept very interested throughout the semester. This is one class I never skipped unless I had to!
Worst Class Ever. do whatever you can to avoid this guy, unless you wanna work your hardest to get a C. His tests are ridiculously hard and doesnt go over anything in class. I could never even stay awake in class DO NOT TAKE!!
4 grades plus attendence. a midterm and final with 10 out of 30 possible ids and 2 essays. the other 2 grades are papers on philosophy books. dont take him, hes hard to follow and a pretty hard grader.
He is one of the smartest people I have ever met in my life, but he isnt the best of teachers. His tests are hard, but he gives you everything you need to know, so its up to you to prepare accordingly. The main problem I had is that he tends to play favorites in the way he talks to you and the way he grades papers and test.
One of the worst hist teachers I have ever had. Class is such a bore and some how he still gets excited. 2 papers, 1 midterm, and final, but takes attendance. Will rip apart your writing without a care and always has a problem with word choice. If you have aspirations for an A or B you will definitely have to study hardcore for the exams.
He is a good guy and knows his stuff... But watch out! Be prepared to study hard! Also be freindly and ask questions, it will put you on his good side. All round it is a good class but dont take it if you dont want to do alot of learning.
Do not take him! I'm not a history fan to begin with, but he just made it worse. Class is very boring and you feel like you're in there forever. The only entertainment you get is watching the spit collect in the corners of his mouth. NOT COOL.
This guy is very knowledgable and enthusiastic about his subject. The class is not easy but its not hard. I got a D on the midterm and still pulled a B in the class so i imagine if i didnt screw up it would be not that hard of A.
AWESOME!!! If you like history, take this class. Great teacher! Very helpful. Be prepared to learn. I would love to take this professor again.
this class was impossible for me. the notes were all over the place. He gives you the questions for the test and i still manage to do horrible. He says he wants one thing and then when you dont have the magical extra information you didnt know you needed your screwed. i did not like this class, but the teacher is a good guy. he gets really excite
BORING CLASS...lectures the entire time, not enthusiastic at all. you do not have to do any of the reading. the quizzes are all from the notes. prepare and study for your exams and you are fine. i NEVER went to class and got a C+.I would not recommend this class. It is so boring I didn't even care about my grade. Nice person, though and will help.
HARD GRADER! high grade in the class was a B+! boring lectures. very nice guy though and will help with any questions you have. very spontanious lectures. very energetic. picky about essays (which there are a good amount of).
the worst teacher i've ever had. i sleep through this class like it's my job, he does not put notes up on the board or give you any notes what so ever, he studders and just expects you to find out everything on your own. i went to him for help multiple times and he did nothing to even try to help me or solve my problem.
I took this class to fill my core and it destroyed my GPA.....You have to be very detailed on exams and write at a graduate level for essays. Look over the textbook before exams.....I spent over 6 hours studying for the second exam and got a B-!! I will never take him again.......3 exams 2 essay
Good lectures if you actually read-adds some flavor.Good books:Communist Manifesto,Voltaire,Survival in Auschwitz.Semi-difficult exams but study the reviews he gives.Go to class for key terms/explanations if you didn't read-must go to class. Read and you'll do well on the essays. For comments below:this is college, you must read everything(or skim)
awesome prof. you have to WANT to learn. attend every class and take DETAILED!! notes and youll get an A. I did. if you write down what he says almost word for word (including jokes) and write them on the 2 tests and papers, youll get an A. hes funny. drinks water weird, way flamboyant. awesome guy. learned a lot!!!
The information is interesting, but the lecture itself is so boring! He has a monotone so it's hard to pay attention, but you need to take really detailed notes because the tests are basically from lecture notes. He's a pretty hard grader on the tests and 3 papers, almost like he's an english professor.. but he's not! Wouldn't recommend.
aw i love this guy! he really knows his stuff and is such a nice guy. his class is boring but everything is incredibly easy.
He was UM the UM UM UM UH you know the UM... WORST PROF EVER! Monotone, hard grader, grades like he's an English prof., and says UM and YOU KNOW every other word! I absolutely dread his class.
He stutters a lot. He definitely knows his stuff but speaks in a monotone. There are FOUR (boring) novels to read in this class (and write essays on) on top of reading the required text, which he lectures more in depth on what you read so it's not that necessary to read. Four essays, midterm, final.
UM.. UM. YA KNOW, YA KNOW. I wasn't that impressed by him and he made me lose interest in a subject that I was originally considering majoring in. He was a nice guy though, but extremely boring.
Difficult class. He grades very hard... It is a history class and it is rare if anyone will get higher than a B on a paper (even the history guru's). I won't take a class from him again.
His standards are impossible to live up to. Lectures are unbearable to sit through- he's unclear and doesn't offer anything to guide you through the lecture, so good luck taking notes! His feedback is vague, ambiguous and grading is NOT fair. (Max credit on ID terms on exams is 4.75/5- full credit doesn't exist apparently). I worked HARD for a B.
I thought he was a good professor and his lectures were pretty clear. They can be a little bland, but the topics are interesting and he knows what he's talking about. He is a nice, friendly, and pretty funny guy. The workload is very easy for a 200 level course. If you can memorize dates and facts you will do well on the papers.
He's very knowledgeable and passionate about the content. He's a really nice helpful, sweet guy. He expects a lot but he's fair. I wasn't all that interested in the class beforehand but I really love the material now.
Dr. Frank Biletz is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. He's not a mean guy! He's just won't help you with the papers he assigns. His standards were far to high for me to even come close to doing well in that class. The guidelines for the papers were hidden online and he never told us. He doesn't teach the class, he rambles about the subject.
He is a semi great teacher. He is somewhat funny and quirky most of the time but tends to go off on boring lectures. Papers are pretty easy, can spark note most of the information of the books. If you pay attention to major details and have access to google prior to the tests you will be fine. I have not touched the text book once this semester.
This professor was honestly one the worst I have ever had. He designs tests knowing you shouldn't be able to finish them in time. Worst of all: he tries to lecture on topics which he has no clue about. I caught him giving the wrong answer, and was able to pull out a text to prove it a couple of times.
Professor Biletz's class was not my favorite, to say the least. He assigns 4 papers on novels required for the course (you choose 3 of 4), and he grades them VERY harshly, (I never received higher than a B-). His midterm was very stressful, and his final was basically a larger version of the midterm. Lectures are long and he tends to stutter.
Once you get past the stuttering (there's a LOT), Frank isn't that bad- until he starts to assume you already know something about the topic he's discussing. He'll ask a question ("Who knows what Islam means in Arabic?") then awkwardly wait for someone to answer the question nobody knows the answer to. It's awkward and infuriating.
He writes "key terms" on the board at the beginning of class to guide notes, but you still need to pay attention in class. You can use sparknotes for the three essays in the class rather than reading the actual books and easily get good grades on the essays. He does stutter but it's not annoying, you'll get used to it fast. Overall the class was ok
Grades consist of 3 papers, midterm & final. The papers aren't too bad but he is strict when it comes to grading. You can expect between a C+ and A- on papers. The format of the midterm and final is tedious but doable. Lectures can get long & boring but the key terms he writes out are necessary for the exams. If you ask for help, he'll help :)
Attendance is mandatory and gives very long very tedious and boring lectures. Grade consists of 3 papers a midterm and a final. You can get by on the papers with spark notes and still get a B. You can not pay attention in class all semester and still get a B.
He's a really nice guy and he doesn't grade harshly at all. There's a lot of reading assigned in the class but he NEVER checks if you've actually read. As for his midterms and finals, he gives you a certain number of historical eventspeople to know, and only about half will be on the test. He expects you to know them all though.
I absolutely LOVE him. He was so quirky! Theres no homework, just 3 essays and 2 tests throughout the semester, but you can literally just read the spark notes and get at least a B. I would HIGHLY recommend! The lectures are a little long, but its college; the lectures are always long.
Biletz was such a quirky professor. Sometimes I felt sad for him, other times it made me laugh haha. His lectures did get a little long and boring and he will keep going after his class ends, which is awkward. He is a very fair grader, which was my saving grace because history was so boring for me.
On the first day of class, one couldn't help but feel bad for Frank because of his stutter, however don't be fooled. He doesn't hesitate with his sass or his unrelenting red pen. Not sure why he teaches world history since he specializes in Ireland and loves art history. BEWARE: he does not give As to freshmen because he thinks nobody is perfect.
Absolutely the worst professor I have had. He rambles on about unimportant details and his powerpoints barely guide his lecturing which makes it impossible to take notes because he's constantly talking. This course also requires you to learn so many details about such a large period of time, it's hard to keep everything straight.
Professor Biletz was the toughest teacher I've had all semester as a NURSING MAJOR. He is not the most understanding guy. He is absolutely ruthless when it comes to exams -- making us learn terms just to test us on handful, not to mention the 4 essays he gives in the study guide but only puts 2 on the actual exam. Would've taken someone else.
3 essays throughout the semester on 3 different books. Sucks but you can use them to boost your grade as he is not a hard grader. All he tests you on is the terms so if you study hard and memorize them all before a midterm/final, you'll be fine. Easy class
He tries to be engaging, but unless you are very interested in history, the class seems to drag on forever. You only get graded on five things. The tests are just terms, so if you memorize those, you'll be fine. He does take attendance every day, so if you don't show up more than three times, your grade will drop.
This class wasn't bad! His lectures can be a bit boring but he is an overall nice guy and a good teacher. He does stutter, but that does not get in the way of understanding what he is saying. Class consists of three books that you have to write papers on, a midterm, and a final. Not too shabby!!
Professor Biletz would be a great person to sit down with and debate/discuss history with. As a professor though, most of the class was endless lectures repeating the textbook with required attendance, and trying not to fall asleep. I love history but was disappointed with the lack of discussion and VERY hard grading. It was HARD to get a B.
He's a weird grader. I would write, for i.e., "there is historical use in..." and he would mark it up asking "the use of history?" Obviously! Besides from being a tough grader, his class is okay. 3 papers, one midterm, one final make up the grade which isn't bad at all. You can sparknotes the books, but I don't recommend that it's better to read
Prof Biletz is very knowledgeable but is a very tough grader when it comes to papers. He is very specific on what he wants in the papers & if you don't write exactly what he wants, he takes off points. There are 3 papers, 1 midterm, & 1 final. On both midterm & final he gives you exactly what you need to know so you just have to memorize.
Prof Biletz is a strict grader on essays and exams and will also tend to go off subject during the lectures making it difficult to prepare for the exams.
This professor is not worth your time. My biggest pet peeve was the way his essays were graded. I got Bs on all 3 essays because of grammar issues that weren't even there. My content was correct and historically factual but he did't like the way I wrote. I have an A in all english classes so clearly I'm a decent writer.
Professor Biletz is such a nice guy but he is the most boring professor I have ever taken. The class includes three papers a mid term and final which doesn't sound terrible but the books you have to read are awful. Luckily he isn't a tough grader but he's so bad a lecturing that it doesn't matter. Also attendance is mandatory so there's no escape!
His class is made up of 3 essays, attendance, and 2 exams. Attendance is 10% of the grade and if you miss 3 or more classes you automatically get a C. He is an extremely hard grader on his essays, and he is unclear on what he takes off points for. His exams are very difficult and if you miss one small detail on a definition, he will take points off
His class consists of 3 essays, attendance, and exams. He passes around an attendance sheet at the start of class and it's worth 10% of your grade. Also, lectures are very dry and hard to sit through. His power points contain lots of visual images rather than content, making it hard to study for exams. He takes points off for the smallest details.
Professor Biletz cares about his students, but not so much about their grades. Class is graded on attendance, 3 papers on novels, a midterm, and a final. This class was harder and took up more of my time than my major classes. Way too difficult for a first tier core class.
I had this professor and he was sooooo lecture heavy, he has a really bad way of explaining things and he is a very hard test grader. I only sort of passed because I studied my butt off for those final exams and went to the writing center for help. Don't take him if you're not majoring in history.
He's a very nice professor and loves history, but he is an INCREDIBLY tough grader, especially for a Tier 1 class (90% of us took the class for credits, not for our major). Your essays had better be written by Shakespeare or an equivalent otherwise you will get a B. The whole class is just lectures, and they are painfully boring. Don't recommend.
Professor Biletz is a very sweet man, however his class consists of mostly lectures that are very dry. He also grades very tough on papers and exams. Grades consist of MANDATORY attendance, 3 papers, a midterm and final. He passes around a sign-in sheet at the beginning of each class. I wouldn't recommend him unless you are a history/english major
In all honesty, when I first saw him, I thought he would clearly discuss all the information; and he did. However, when he started to grade papers, they were almost always under an A for every student. Extremely picky on papers. Tests were composed of memorizing at least a paragraph or two about 30+ terms. Hardest professor I've ever had
grade consists of 3 papers, mid term, final, and attendance. He is a very sweet man with a Sutter and his lecture is boring but it is easy to pass. he gives 3 essays on books: is a tough grader but I got A- on all my papers and I spark noted. you can look up all the info for the tests online, its not too hard. Nice cute Oldman tho
I was hospitalized for about 9 days after a suicide attempt during finals week and missed all my finals. Afterwards I explained to him the situation and asked for a substitute final instead of the exam. He did not even respond to what I said about the hospital. He just told me that would be unfair. I was not able to do the exam and was given an F.
If I could give a 0/5, I would. Boring, difficult, and not a good tier 1 class. I'd rather lick the bottom of a sweaty foot than take a class he teaches.
Prof Biletz is a nice old man but his class is very dry and very long. He's a very picky grader with the three papers you write for the class- even prolific writers in his class will never get a 100. The tests are kind of hard even if you do take notes in class as well and aren't very reflective of the lectures.
Super sweet man, I had him my freshman year and at one point I had a c in his class I was struggling so much. His lectures are so long and dry and confusing. But I started to meet with him outside of class before quizzes and he really helped me and made sure I understood and my grade on quizzes started to improve. He really cares just reach out.
He rambles about things that barely relate to the lecture and is very hard to follow. There are 3 papers to write and he gives almost no information about what he expects but grades very harshly. Does not respect our time and consistently goes over the class time limit by 5-10 minutes every class. Do not take!
Make sure you take good notes. Essays are relatively boring and he grades quite harshly. Would not recommend skipping. It was hard to follow what he was saying and was my most boring class by far.
Very boring lectures. You have to purchase 3 books in order to write 3 essays. Additionally, he wants you to purchase a textbook. He's doing too much for a tier 1 course.
Prof Biletz is simply a sweet old man who loves history. He does have an old-fashioned teaching style that is sometimes a bit boring, but overall, I was decently happy with my grades on the papers (avg. 80%). As of this semester, the tests are all take home. He is forgiving if you miss class, as long as you reach out. There are worse professors.
Has a stuttering problem, slideshows are mainly pictures, kinda boring, 3 readings, 3 3page essays on the readings with given prompts not difficult at all and I hate writing essays and I skimmed through the readings still managing to get a good grade, quizzes every 2 weeks. Would not take this class again though
Bit of a drag, really, but he's a nice guy. Four quizzes and three essays, plus midterm and final. Kind of funny in a dad way.
Students write 3 essays on 3 different books that have nothing to do with the class material, and for an introductory course he grades them SO harshly as if it is an advanced level English course. At least the quizzes are straightforward, if you take notes in class they will provide the most help. Avoid him if you can!
Professor Biletz is understanding, especially if you speak to him. He's not the best lecturer, so it's important to keep up with the 'daily readings', as they will matter for the final exam. Additionally, there are three bigger texts with an essay each. Be sure to manage your workload, because it will seem to ebb and flow.
He is very passionate about what he teaches which makes the class more interesting. It is entirely lecture based but just pay attention and you will learn a lot. There is never any homework. We have 3 papers throughout the semester and the quizzes are all take-home, there's also very few of them. He is very kind and understanding.
nice guy you can tell he loves history but doesn't have a grasp of what should be expected of the students. makes the grade dependent on 3 papers on 3 books that have little to do with the class. He's a great lecturer and the things he teaches are interesting but his grading is abysmal, unless your a history major do not take him
he's not bad but also not great. three essays on random books, four quizzes, an excessive final, and attendance are what you're graded on. he isn't a BAD professor, but he definitely can get boring. I met up with him for office hours before each essay & he was very helpful! btw do not buy the textbook & u can easily sparknote the papers lol
Every class was a 45 min run-on sentence with no breaks for questions or comments. The information was not interesting and he didn't make it interesting. The papers are completed completely outside of class. The quizzes are all online and pretty easy but I would only recommend this class if you enjoy an incredibly boring lecture.
Prof Biletz is a very sweet man and and happy to explain more in his office hours. He is heavy talker in his lectures. I wouldn't recommend if your a history major, he is very smart and knowledgeable about history, just not a great lecturer. but if you're only taking for a core requirement he is perfectly adequate, kind of easy too.
Prof. Biletz is one of those professors that you don't like in the beginning, but grow to sort of accept. His class may seem boring and overwhelming in the beginning, but it's very repetitive and his grading is straight forward so u get the hang of it. He can be boring but dont skip! Attendance does matter, and it'll either help/bring down grade
He's a nice man, but he doesn't know how to teach. Lectures are very dry and you're graded on 3 papers based on 3 books. Books are completely unrelated to the class itself. Stutters a lot and gets side tracked very often. Quizzes are based on such small things briefly mentioned during lecture. Do not recommend. STEER AWAY!
He is a very kind person, but a very difficult grader. Each question on the exams are out of 10 points and he said he rarely gives above a 95 unless you are basically quoting from the textbook itself. You do not have to buy the text book, and it can be found online, as well as the required books. If you want a good grade, you have to talk to him.
Very boring class, it was a struggle to stay awake. Professor Biletz is a nice man, but his lectures are extremely boring, and I learned nothing. Exams are extra asf his grading for them is annoying. Don't buy the textbook, it's useless. He makes you read 3 random books and write an essay on them. Not the worst class, just extremely boring.
