He's a great teacher. He knows what he teaches. The problem is on the exams and grades. All are long essay questions and I had a great difficulty writing out all I know in a short period of time. Naturally, good grades are hard to get.

A likable guy if you're not a victim of his rant. Be sure that you're right when answering a question. ;) Straight-foward--just as I like them. Won't BS you and say you're half correct. When you're wrong, you're wrong. Better be able to write extermely fast to get an A on his exams though.

Not recommended if you can't write fast. You will need to write A LOT if you wanna get anything better than a C+. He's very tough at grading the test and quiz papers. However, he explains everything very throughly. As long you do the assignments and pay attention in class, you'll do just fine.

Insightful and gives clear explanations. Gives very good lectures to start students off in philosophy, however it is true he is very hard headed that won't listen to arguments against his beliefs. Extremely hard tests even though he is thorough in marking them. AVOID this class if you're worried about GPA (he claims to have NEVER given a B+ or A).

Don't sleep in his class! Study hard and write alot more on the exam, will be better grade.

Dr. Derringh expects rigorous effort from his students as well he should. The subject matter by definition is rigorous. He forces you to master the subject,

So here is the deal, the comments you read are right he is hard he takes philosophy very seriously if you are taking this class just to take it I suggest you don't. Now if you are taking philosophy because you are actually interested and want to learn I suggest you take it. His test are easy if you are alway in the class, and you READ THE MATERIAL.

For one thing, philosophy is worlds removed from the other social sciences--it forces you to think, which I guess most college students don't like to do. With him, if you are an average writer and you hate reading, DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS! This course requires you to think and write extremely well, so tread VERY carefully!

One of the most high quality professors in City Tech. Very tough on grading. Very very very knowledgeable in his field of work with extensive verbose debating skills. Don't try to debate with him unless you have solid reasoning and evidence. Most students fail because he teaches at an ivy league level. Still don't understand why he teaches here

Very knowledgeable and a good teacher, the notes that he gives should be used in your own way on the exams. Don't just study the notes, you have to understand the subject and come up with your own ideas. A good Prof. if you want to learn and work hard.

Just like a student invoked in one of the ratings , Take this professor if you want to learn a lot of amazing ideas in Philosophy. He really doesn't seem to teach at an Ivy League level , You just have to understand what he expects you to write on the exams.Not saying he is easy but take him if you want to learn very well.

Best Professor I've ever had. Enjoyed his class very much. Hes very smart. His tests are hard and he may be sarcastic at times. Just take good notes. Love love love him

Great teacher. Cares about his material. This class is boring if you have a short attention span, and is hard if you are not capable of complex thinking. He appreciates class participation and outside reading greatly. I wouldn't say this class was easy, but I did enjoyed it. I admire this professor quite a bit. He is also very animated.

Excellent Professor!!! He knows the material. He is very knowledgeable about other fields. Smart, extravagant and charismatic, for sure. The class is interesting and informative - couldn't miss one session. You have to study, though, and read outside material to pass it. If you are taking his session you should want to do better than just pass.

He's not an easy teacher to pass. Although we never get homework except to read. He wants to understand it like the back of your hand. if u get a little off topic he makes u feel bad. disrespectful until after midterm he lightens a little bit but will still be mean. hopefully i get a C with a lot of effort.

Honestly he's a great professor. He's just not an easy A by any means. He says it from the first day, he doesn't give A's. However he promotes critical thinking. Just answering the questions on the test without giving your own ideas will get you an 80 at most. He's really knowledgeable and funny. Some people take his jokes seriously though...

I took his class and yes it's hard. He's a strange man but very knowledgeable. I can see why he gets so many negative reviews; still these students are crying babies. Do your work and don't complain. Derringh is there to teach people, if you don't want to learn and work hard it's your fault.

Prof. Derringh is really into his subject. It is important to sit in on one of his classes before you sign up for the semester. Make appointment to go over draft of your paper before turning it in. Chit chat with him about chess.

Stay up on your readings. test are all essay questions. he allows you to express yourself and encourages you to ask questions and participate in class before the exam. HE IS THE BEST IN THE DEPARTMENT. NO HOMEWORK AT ALL. just keep up on the readings so that you don't have too cramp it in the day before the exam. you will prob get a B if your good

BY FAR THE BEST IN THE DEPARTMENT. No homework, no papers, just 3-4 text. VERY simple professor. He does make you work for it. Just pay attention and give intelligent answers on the test and you will do fine. Seriously the best in the department. He needs to teach all the philo classes.
