Frank is the man. He seriously cares about his students, and you can tell. Not sure about what you're doing in school? I dont think Prof. Espinoza isn't a counselor right now, BUT HEY, he'll set you straight. Or help as much he can. KEEPS THE CLASS INTERESTING. ANSWERS QUESTIONS. OFFERS GREAT EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES. uwontregrettakinghisclasses.
Mr.Espinoza really helped me to tranfer to SJSU. The class was very helpful and recommend it to anyone transfering.
I took SOC 10 during the summer and it's a great class if you don't want to stress out too much. There were 3 midterms, 1 paper, and some extra credit assignments. He's a great guy and makes sure we enjoy what we're learning.
Very upbeat guy, pretty easy class. Not much work involved but it could make or break your grade if you do bad on the tests and the final paper. Really easygoing so ask for help if needed.
Great Professor, helpful, patient, fun but yet challenging class, sociology 13
This guy knows his stuff. Not only are the lectures easy to follow, they tend to lead to heated discussion which is good if you are like me and can't stand simply go to class everyday just to take notes. He requires three papers to be written all semester, all on current event analysis. There are two midterms, the final, and one extra credit opportunity. I highly recommend taking him.
GREAT PROFFESOR!would never regret taking this class. His lecture are well explained and if you read the chapters before classes you'll do fine. Test wording are not confusing at all..Take his class!
He's a very open minded and caring teacher. There's not homework, just 3 tests which are challenging if you don't understand what's going on in class, one paper which is just about yourself, and one extra credit opportunity. If you want to pass you have to try though.
Took the class in this intersession. Interesting class. 3 exams, no final exam, just the paper about you. 15 attendant score. Easy B but if you want an A, you have to try hard. However, the professor is really helpful and kind.
Took him over intersession. The class is tight due to limited time. The course looks like dry but he always know how to make it interesting. 3 tests are multiple choice, A for sure if u read the book carefully. 1 paper reflects abt ur experience of life. Hes nice and really know what hes gonna talk about. Take him, u will never regret
Espinoza is an excellent teacher, you will learn something out of this guy! All of his test are based on lectures and the reading. Overall it is a good course recommended.
This professor looks very strict at first, but he is a nice professor. He makes his class very interesting, and makes his students to participate. He knows his stuff. He is very clear in his lectures, and he is really making change in the live of his students. If you want to learn something meaningful, take this class.
He is such a great teacher!! Love being in his class :) take him and you won't regret it
Keeps the lectures interesting. he is one of those teachers who enjoys his job and interacts well with the students.
He's a great teacher. There are very few assignments, so his grading is mostly test-based, but they're easy if you follow the lectures and read the book. He makes sure every student gets time to speak, and engages in great conversation. Very inclusive in his teaching, too. My favorite teacher, so far.
People say this class is easy, and it is nice because you don't have homework or quizzes. However, his tests are RIDICULOUS and way too hard/long. He includes his lecture notes, book material, and 95 key terms he gives you that he expects you to memorize. He takes points off if you are late. He is an awesome teacher but don't take the class.
Great teacher. He is vivid in class and is able to deliver lecture after lecture on the most important information. I would recommend this teacher to anyone who needs this class. His exams are not as bad as some would like to think.
Buy the study guide version of the book. Its more helpful on his tests. He's a pretty great teacher. Super passionate about his job and course. Best kind of teacher. Always smiling.
Mr Espinoza is awesome. His class is really straight forward and wasnt hard. All you have to do for an A is read the chapters and do well on 1 paper he gives out. Super nice guy
HAVE to listen and take notes. In order to even get a B- on the test, you have to read your notes a few times. The paper is easy enough. Very genuine guy.
Sociology never peeked my interest. Until, Mr. Espinoza speaks and then you are caught. He is passionate, vivid, and hilarious. Be prepared to be inspired. Attendance is mandatory and he notes tardiness. Semester workload consist of two tests, research paper, and final. NOTE: you have to read the book or you will fail miserably.
An amazing teacher for an amazing class. Read and pay attention to the lectures and you'll be fine :)
Best Sociology teacher at EVC. He cares that you read the material, but you dont have to read it word by word, just the ideas matter. His tests are important but very passable if you read. His lectures are very good, and thoughtful, take notes as they help for the tests. He wil give you a good grade if you work hard.
Such a great teacher! actually knows what he is talking about and keeps you very interested in the class. must take notes to pass the class. notes are very helpful for tests. he is very specific on what he wants. always full of energy. interacts with his students. No homework but quizzes are on the more difficult side :
For an intro to sociology class, the lecture is just about what you would expect: Redundant, participation based, and sometimes dragging. If he spent at least an extra 15-20 minutes on textbook material it would definitely make up for the dense material in each exam. Other than that, decent class. Just needs more focus on material than daily news.
Not only an amazing person overall but an amazing professor and mentor. He really isn't asking a lot, and that's coming from someone who's attended two CSU's and if you can't handle this class then you sure aren't ready for the universities. He gives out helpful words to know for the exam and his lectures are clear, concise, and interesting! 10/10!
I love professor espinoza, he is a really cool dude. He's super funny and makes learning fun. Also does an extra credit assignment on a live theatre performance which is awesome. Overall a great professor, grading is fair but does expect nothing but your best work. Really connects with his students. Will be taking Social Problems with him.
Mr. Espinoza is definitely THE man! He's so inspirational and funny. I definitely learned a lot from his class. He's so energetic. You would get an A on exams if you read the chapters, no doubt.
By far one of the best professors I have ever taken. 3 tests, one paper, and one extra credit opportunity. Lectures are informative and really get you thinking. Don't fall asleep in his class, study, and be involved in the class and you'll pass. TAKE HIM!
This teacher is pretty passionate but it gets in the way of others personal opinions. He said in the beginning of the class that he wanted to hear everyone's opinions but I guess that just meant if it's different than his, he wants to correct you. He doesn't like being challenged but students need to do it anyways.
Very passionate professor and the best professor in sociology. He makes you work hard but is always there to help. Take notes and read the text and you will get a good grade.
Very great and well respected professor. His lectures are heavy but he relates everything to the class, and personal experience. Always an interesting class, no homework, multiple choice midterms and finals. Study guides help a lot, and read the sections. Tests are fairly easy if you study.
He's just too funny! He always smiles, which makes me want to smile back. Although I keep falling asleep in class because it's an easy A, it can be a pain if you don't read the textbook, as the exams are more based on the book concepts rather than his notes.
An absolutely inspirational professor! Lectures are mandatory (he gives points for attendance, plus a lot of test material is from lectures) but he manages to make them interesting. If you can, go to his office hours and get to know him on a personal level. Tests are pretty easy, only one paper. Great for an easy GE, plus I learned a lot!
Earn your grade by coming to class. Lectures include some great life lessons and generic info, which is interesting and easy to remember. Take good notes. Exams are fair. You'll pass if u get ur stuff done. He's a pretty clear cut teacher
Espinoza is an amazing professor. He is very passionate in his work, really funny, and makes lectures very interesting. If read the assigned chapters the exams will come easy to you. There are 3 exams and one final paper. He gives the paper in advance so you have plenty of time to complete it and its due on the last day of class.
He is good. Tests are easy. Only complaint is that the essay worth 20% of the grade is due on the last day, so it makes an A uncertain... I did get an A overall, so how bad could it have been... good prof
Mr. Espinoza is an amazing teacher! There was 3 papers, one presentation and 3 tests. Also a couple of outlines due as homework. He grades fairly and is not boring. Tests are usually on notes taken in class however if you read the book you I'll deffinelty not have a hard time on the tests. Take him!
Espinoza is a great professor. He only gave 3 exams through the semester and one Final paper. Easy A as long as you take notes on the lecture, and read each chapter! He encourages to see him during office hours to aid you in the course.
takes attendance EVERY DAY. doesn't post his lectures online because he wants you to show up to class. all exams are based off textbook, so if you want to get an A you'll want to read the chapters. no homework and one research paper at the end of the sem. the class was only worth like 300 points, so every point matters! overall he's okay!
So inspiring. So motivative. Really encourages you to strive in academics and life in general.
So glad I took his class! One of the best teachers I've had so far at EVC. We have weekly homework but its not even hard. 3 papers 3 exams and 1 powerpoint presentation. Mostly all the exams are on the notes taken in class. Didnt really need the book, however if you find sociology interesting I suggest you buy it. Great class!
Frank is a very cool professor. His class is very simple and doable as longest you read the weekly chapters, take good notes, & write down definitions of the terms he hands out. 3 exams (60 questions) and a research Paper. I enjoyed his class very much. Hes a funny enthusiastic guy. Definitely recommend this teacher. Take him!
An amazing lecturer that speaks with tremendous amounts of passion for his subject, and inspires you to take a second look at the world around you. Tests are easy if you read the textbook and take notes in class. Would most definitely take again!
Super boring class. Tries too hard to be convincing. Cant remember anything from lecture. The exams are hard to pass like you have to READ THE BOOK. The final paper is like KMS. :(((((((
Tests are ridiculously long, great professor but many pros and cons depending on the type of student you are. Doesnt include clear outline of final paper. Good profesor, take at your own risk if your not on top of your stuff
First year student at this College but not very interesting teacher
Loved his class. If you have the chance, take it! It'll be a fun experience.
She is really cool and understanding. Her assignment is not only easy, short but also relatable. You wont have a problem doing it. Tests are multiple choice and notes allowed. Final is presentation. Highly recommend!
Mr. Espinoza is funny & informative when it comes to lectures. Theres only 3 tests and 1 research paper thats due on the last week of the semester I believe. The only bad part is that he doesnt give no study guides for his tests, so you must read, write & study all vocabulary terms on the handout he gives, & study all your written down notes.
Pay attention during the lectures and when he says "This will be on the test" cause it will. Three exams, one paper, and they are heavily based on the lectures but you also need to keep up with the reading. Made a mistake not reading the first half of the course and it put me behind. Very kind when you need help. Has lots of office hours!
I scored a B on my first exam but he rounded to an A, I got an A on my second exam and a B on my third exam. Not sure how i did on my final paper, but I feel like he rounded my grade up to an A. do not take this class if you do not want to study the textbook. I carefully skimmed through the chapters but studied the vocab words heavily.
Super fun, caring, hilarious professor. He was super nice and made the subject relatable to us. You can tell he's passionate about sociology and not to mention how WOKE he is!! I love him so much as a professor and he's so educated and he knows exactly what he's talking about. He's super lenient and kind. Take him!
11/10 AMAZING PROFESSOR! I went into socio not knowing what to expect but Espinoza made it worth while. I really enjoyed this class. The reading is very manageable. He goes through his lectures slow enough for one to understand and he is HILARIOUS. He's very interactive w his students! As long as u take notes and read, YOU'RE GOOD
One of the most passionate teachers on campus. Talks with conviction when talking about sociology. Make sure you keep up with the reading and show up to class, he's super transparent so make sure to just put effort into the class.
He was the best professor I had at EVC! He cares about his students academic and well being. He talks with so much passion for sociology. He's so easy to talk to and is easy to communicate with.
College lvl class not hard to pass. exam1 passed he curves the grade, exam2 got a C, but I didn't try final exam you must study key term trust! final paper is APA 1500 sounds hard really its not remember that he only grades on these no late or extra credit and show up everyday 15pts of you grade for 6 months covid changed tat you must turn in final
His class will put you to sleep. All based on lectures. No homework. 3 exams 1 final and 1 reflection paper due the last day of class. seems easy but He makes his exams tricky and confusing. also you have to read before going into class or else you wont know a lot of what he's talking about.. he's really cool though he also rounds up your grade.
Espinoza is a great lecturer and really opened my eyes about society. However, if you rely solely on lecture notes and don't read the txtbk, you'll miss a good handful of questions on the exams. No hw, just 3 MC exams (noncumulative) and 1 paper. Not much points to go off of, but you'll be fine as long as you read and go to class.
Professor Espinoza was one of my favorites at EVC. He cares for his student's academics and mental health! If you have a question, he would be extremely patient to explain it and make sure you fully understand it. It give the study guide at the beginning of every unit. 10/10 recommend!!
Professor Espinoza is one of my favorite professors at EVC! I felt challenged and pushed to do my best work, and I must say it was gratifying! I savored every part of writing my final sociological paper because I took a journey within myself and wrote what was in my heart. I did average on the midterm. Bottom linetake Professor Espinoza's class!
Espinoza was a good professor. It's a very easy class as long as you follow the directions exactly and take his feedback to heart. Every week, you're expected to post a discussion essay, a reply to someone, and a ten question quiz about the lesson. The final is a sociological reflection paper, which can be done easily if the directions are followed
I've had Professor Espinoza for sociology in fall semester. Sociology has always been one of my favorite subjects but with him I wanted to tear my eyeball out. Every week be expected to write a 5 paragraph essay and on top of that a 5 paragraph peer review. Absolutely dreaded this class and good luck to anyone who takes HIS.
An amazing teacher that gives you various resources. He knows a lot about the school and what it provides, so talk to him if you need any accommodations. His lectures include class participation, where students can apply their own experiences with the topics being discussed. He is funny and very friendly. Stay on top of your work and attendance.
Professor Espinoza is a very solid choice. He is very clear from the beginning of the semester about what he expects which in my opinion is not asking for a lot. Interesting lectures and if you keep up with the readings you should be fine. Open book quizzes every other Saturday mornings which were not too bad. Coming to class is mandatory.
He was really considerate and he listens to you and your needs
Took professor Espinoza over the fall semester async. Started off alright. He was clear on what he wanted and expected. However, I disliked how his assignments were due at 12 PM on a Saturday. Quizzes were open 8 AM-12 PM on Saturday. He is strict on extensions. Some of his assignment criteria are a bit confusing.
I did not like the way this professor carried himself in class I took his class a year ago so maybe he has changed. He cared too much about "real news" often went in to tangents not related to sociology. I dropped and had to retake with another professor the semester after.
Lectures were boring/basic. Participation is heavy and attendance matters. Grades participation inaccurately; me and others got different scores for the same participation. Midterm/final are moderate. Assignments are heavy, no remake/extra credit, losing 4 points will drop grade by 2% or so. Quiz opening and closing times: are short/in morning.
His lectures feel like they last for eternity, half the class would either sleep or pretend to pay attention while looking at their phones underneath the desks. He would derail from the lectures to talk about things unrelated to the lectures. He speaks in 3rd person and narrates about his adventures outside class.
The professor was okay at first. The assignments are always due at 12PM every Saturday and the quizzes are only up on Saturday from 8AM-12PM. For students who has other classes I recommend you take another professor.
Attendance matters as well as going to class on time. Lectures were boring. Assignments are heavy--grades can drop significantly just by losing 2 points. Quizzes are open 8AM-12PM on Saturdays and homework due 12PM on Saturdays, no exceptions. No extra credit. Don't recommend taking him if you don't have time to do his assignments or go to class.
Shows lots of passion for sociology & his love for his culture. Talks about current news & connect them to sociology. Tries to connect with the class & learn more about his students. His lectures are easy to understand but his midterms are tricky on purpose. His assignments are due Saturday 12pm and quiz Saturday 8am-12pm. Not a bad class! :)
Don't listen to the bad reviews! Really understanding and tentative to your needs if you need anything and is super passionate about sociology. Just communicate with him! Attendance is mandatory. Assignments due Sat 12pm, quizzes open Sat 8am-12pm. Do work on time! No extra credit offered. No hw, just news article assignments. I recommend Espinoza!
Espinoza is really kind and considerate. Do your best and he'll work with you to help you succeed. DON'T skip out on the final paper--I would've gotten an A if I'd done it but I have bad time management so that's on me. Bi weekly quizzes and new article assignments, neither of which are difficult at all. Good luck :)
Not worth taking, talks to much and doesn't work with you to do assignments. Don't take his class if you want to get a good grade
He's not very considerate he always say go back and read. He's so confusing too lazy to explain
I took this professor twice and he is willing to help you perpare for the midterm and final. Just be aware of the quizzes that are due every other Saturday
Great professor! Loooooots of writing though. If you struggle with writing long paragraphs and responses, maybe not the class for you. He does care about using local sources for information and learning about and getting to know each other. Grading criteria is very clear from the start.
I took Espinoza for an accelerated online course but it never felt too overwhelming. Weekly readings (2 chapters in my case), discussion about a current news article, and quizzes. He is communicative and forgiving if you miss a deadline. He has clear criteria for the assignments, so just follow the instructions and his feedback.
The discussion boards are pretty difficult. Other than that, everything is fine. Professor takes his job seriously.
Caring & responsive. Took accelerated version. Weekly discussions connecting readings to recent news articles which can be time consuming, be prepared to write. Weekly open book quiz, opens Fri-Sat. A final paper making personal connections to 5 contexts from the book, be ready to cite your sources. Follow instructions+feedback & you'll be good.
I do not recommend this professor for those taking a lot of classes. He will assign a lot of work in accelerated classes; around 2 quizzes per week, 1 discussion (basically writing a whole essay), and to read 2 chapters. It's overwhelming and he is barely flexible or understanding.
Keep in mind that the discussion posts for this class are due weekly on Staurdays at 12pm but these are not normal discussion posts, they are 5 paragraph essay's with 6-8 sentences in each paragraph with an additional essay response to a peer. I had to drop the class because the work load was overwhelming.
Do not take his class! Possibly one of the worst teachers I have ever had took his online class assignments are graded harshly while his feedback is a joke. Instead, of this feedback helping you understand what you did on an assignment it confuses you. And he is not flexible he expects way too much out of an online class.Good Luck if you take him.
This dude is actually a horrible teacher, if you want to learn anything about sociology please do not take him. He talks about how teachers treated him wrong in the past but does the same thing to his students. Please do not take this teacher. I had him in person and he was extremely strict on dates and had no lenience whatsoever.
Red ratings are just people who thought "sociology class where I could be lazy ezpz" but realized being lazy and showing up late would mean having a hard time in his class (who could've thought..). Prof. Espinoza is really passionate about what he teaches and WILL care for you if you put in the effort and ask for help. I loved his class!
Professor played mainly videos throughout the lecture time instead of actually lecturing and does not speak on topics related to a lot of the quizzes and finals. 1 hour 30 minute class but is almost 45 minutes of videos that do not relate to the lecture. Very textbook heavy.
