He is very detail oriented. Any word he says in lecture can turn up on the test and usually does. Broings live specimens to Zoology and is quite amusing. Is kinda cold when you ask a question on a 1:1 basis

I recommend recording the lecture because his tests come right from his lectures which don't include any written material.
Write down everything at lecture, it will show up on the test. Class isn't too bad but he seemed elitist sometimes. Have fun with the taxonomy lab where you'll have to memorize like 150 animal family, order etc...
Openly made fun of students in class, why? Not helpful for questions at all.
This man is so strong and inspirational. One time he pitched a no hitter and at the same time smashed one of his own pitches out of the park and still had enough carisma to catch the ball, preserving his perfect game.
Very fun to listen to. Nice guy...very animated makes class go by quickly!
Dr. Fish loves what he does and it is evident. Very hard class but just pay attention, take good notes and show him you care.Tests are STRAIGHT from lecture notes!! Lab is long and tedious but very cool! Definately take this class- you wont regret it!

I took 2 of Dr. Fish's classes over 12 years ago. He was and still is one of the leading minds on fish locomotion (it's true). He was smart, engaging, and funny - even if it was at someone's expense. Some classes are worth taking-and his is one of them
dr. fish is awesome!best lecture teacher i ever had..made this stuff seem interesting..test come straight from ur notes..of course its alot of material,ITS A BIO COURSE PEOPLE!!!!study ur notes youll get a good grade...
THE BEST PROF. AT THE DUBC... I LOVE HIM...there is nothing else to say
I had him for Marine Bio & Animal Morphology. He taught some of the same info in both classes. We went scuba diving in the pool in Marine Bio. Fish always talks about his "enormous muscles." Lectures are sometimes boring, but exams are easy and straight from his notes. Would definietly recommend him.
AMAZING!!!!
He's an ****. He won't answer questions you ask him and his tests for zoology ask for extremely minute details. The lab sections are poorly thought out, and then contain obscenely hard lab practicals where you must know everything about every species dissected. But you have to take Zoo for bio so there's no way around him.
Dr. Fish is not only the best but the coolest professor in the science dept. This class was extremely hard, but as long as you are willing to put forth the effort and try your best, your grade will reflect that.
Update your freakin syllabus! You're tellin us to read pages that aren't on the exams. His personality: COCKY
Dr. Fish is a cool guy for lecture - avoid him for lab though. His tests are straight from the notes, do not waste hours reading the textbook - literally 2 or fewer questions out of 50 on each exam were from the textbook. He's not a hard professor, and an A is possible if you're willing to put the time into the course. It IS a biology course, so it
he is cocky in lab. great in lecture. very interesting and the notes and tests are very clear. if you understand them well you will do fine. I got a B-.
The class IS extremely interesting, and he's great in lecture. BUT you do have to work for your grade. Lab is the hardest part just because the identification must come from memory and there's no multiple choice. Read the text, go to class, and study your ass off.. and you will do fine. I got a B.
Great teacher. Just pay attention and take good notes and you'll be fine. Read the pages in the book and the readings he assigns. Its not that hard of a course at all...if you think it is... just wait til your upper level bios.
very charismatic as well as informative. by the way, he is not cocky: he just has a sense of humor. If you can memorize, you'll be fine.
If you're not having fun, you're missing the point
He isn't cocky. His class is actually fun & very interesting! The tests are pretty easy if you study, and you don't need to read the whole textbook. He lets you know what to read, and it isn't a lot. The lab is more difficult than the lecture, but if you don't have a problem memorizing things you should do fine.
Definately a knowledgeable professor, has some very interesting lectures, he even brought a crocodile into class!!! Not the most helpful guy though...
Best professor at WCU. Tests are fair and straight from notes. Funny and makes the concepts easy to understand. He brings live specimens into class and is one of the leading minds in his field. Highly recommended.
As a person he is Conceited, full of himself, and demeaning! However, he is more tolerable as a professor. If he just took the time to be a little nicer, I think he would be one of the best at WCU, but his personality pulls him down.
Dr Fish is not there to hold your hand through school. He is there to teach, and he does a great job. His sense of humor might come across to some as "conceited" but when you are as renowned a scientist as he is, I think you can get away with it. As a professor, he is informative and fair. He is one of the greatest assets of the university.
He is an a$$ and def. not apprachable. But, he is also a really good teacher. class isn't boring and if you put in the work you can at least get an easy B.
Dr.Fish is a great professor. Not only is his class great, but he is also a widely known. This guy has a grant from Harvard to do research. He knows the material from experience. Lecture is entertaining. His tests can be tricky, but are fair. He's a character. Highly recommended.
Dr. Fish's class is entertaining and fair. I would definitely recommend him.
He's definitely into himself. Selfish, conceited, unapproachable. All excellent words to describe him.
Are you kidding? Dr. Fish is awesome... he is so smart, funny, and entertaining... I don't find him unapproachable either. Take lots of notes bc anything he says could be on the test, but he is definitely fair. Great professor, great class... I'd recommend him to anyone. :)
He is @ the top of his field, this is University level-take notes get a good study group Work together! Office hours if U need his help - do read-throughs of ur notes in groups to see what u missed. no slides, ur skill@note taking is it. YOU MUST get study groups to share notes tests R anything he says during class 2or3 ?s from the textbook.
He is an okay guy. makes you work hard but overall is pretty fair
Lectures are very entertaining, sometimes he brings in live animals. Lecture notes are not posted so you must attend each one and take your own notes to do well, he also takes attendance each class. His tests are exactly from his lectures and 1-2 questions from the assigned textbook chapters. Lab practical is a of memorizing but not impossible.
He is very entertaining in his lectures, but he doesn't put the slides on d2l even though that is what most of the exams are on. Not very approachable and extremely unhelpful. He goes to his lectures and teaches well, but do not expect him to put in even a little bit of effort to help you outside of class.
The lab is actually harder than the class itself. As long as you memorize, you'll be fine. He's actually kind of funny.
Dr. Fish is one of my least favorite professors in the bio department here. When I took general zoology, I went to his office hours to ask for help and he basically just shooed me away. He has little regard for his students, and cares way more about "his" grants (I say that because they are actually shared between many schools).
Fish gets a bad rep, he's not hard if you go to class and take notes. out of 50 exam questions 2 may come from extra assigned reading. If you go to class and actually pay attention it's an easy A. The lab is the hardest part.
Truly doesn't care about the student and our success. Loves to find ways to make everything more impossible than it should be. Test are straight from the notes which would be great except he doesn't use d2l, doesn't provide power points to students so how well you do depends on how great you are at taking notes. Lab practicals aren't terrible
Go to class. Reading the material is important but you can't replace his lectures. He's entertaining and makes everything seem clear and easy when he explains it. The labs are tough but if you work hard in them they make the class so much more easy.
Don't ever skip. Record the lectures and listen to them again. The lab is hard but all memorization.
If you go to class and take good notes and study those notes, you'll get an A. It's up to you to put in the work for this class, since he doesn't post anything on D2L, but his tests are straight from class notes. Lab was tough, but just don't start memorizing the night before and you'll be good! I personally loved zoology!
Record the lectures. That's the only way I made it through. I listened to them after writing my notes by hand and then typed them up. For lab, I used quizlet to get through the first half. Helped with spelling and such. Don't rush through! 2nd lab exam I stayed the entire, took pictures, videos identifying structures. Study and you'll be fine.
Great professor! Lectures are hilarious. You can tell her really likes his subject. Record his lectures!! Only way I passed. Lab questions are very straight forward. Study the list for 1st one & for 2nd one stay the entire time & make videos identifying structures. Ask for help & its there. Can be intimidating. Read the assigned book its on final.
I gotta say, I enjoyed this class. This class really required me to keep organized notes and record lectures, and spend weekends memorizing the labs, but if you have good notes you will get an A- guaranteed. Read the textbook (3 questions/exam from the text) and take copious notes from there and you'll get an A in Dr. Fish's class. Great lectures!!
I know a lot of people like Dr. Fish: I'm not one of them. He's rude, condescending, and arrogant, and really doesn't care about the student. He does love his Zoology, and knows his stuff. I studied hard for everything. Record the lectures, read the textbook and other readings, and ask for help. The worst was the 2nd practical. :( Not an easy A.
At first I thought I would be bored of the class b/c it was about animals. However, after taking this course I have a new profound respect and learned a lot about animals. Dr. Fish's lectures are honestly amazing. He keeps it very interesting and even brings in animals and props! However, by no means is this class an easy A. You will have to work.
Fantastic professor, very study heavy. Would highly recommend recording lectures, and rewriting the notes a few times. Lab is very difficult. Fantastic experiences for everything. One of the most difficult classes I have ever taken yet would not trade it for anything.
I have taken 3 classes with Dr. Fish and he definitely does grow on you. I can relate to students when they say he can come off intimidating at first, but if you put in the effort and go to his office hours frequently he will appreciate that and see that you are trying. Record lectures and talk to him if you are confused. Best professor in Biology!
Tries to engage the class. Brought in an alligator when we talked about reptiles, that kind stuff. But if you skip lecture & don't get the notes you will not pass. Lots of details, as expected for a bio class. Overall good teacher, though not the kind that's a pushover. Do the assigned readings, and make flashcards as you go.
Fish is a solid professor. Honestly, the people that get bad scores on the lecture exams are the ones that sleep through the lecture or don't care. That being said, this is not an easy A. Always start reviewing the weekend before the test, you won't regret it. Also for the lab practicals, PLEASE do not take this lightly. It is so difficult.
Fish is a great professor, very knowledgeable. I recommend recording lectures and reviewing for exams at least a week in advance. The class is made up of minimal assignments, homework not being one, so suffice to say it is tough to make up for bad grade. Office hours are a must. Do not take this class lightly or you will regret it.
Dr. Fish is a great professor. I had him for Zoology and got an A. If you go to class and take good notes, you will pass. The questions from the tests are right from his lecture and the readings he gives you from the textbook. READ those pages in the textbook and make sure you understand the bolded concepts.
Dr. Fish is by far my favorite professor of the semester. He is so funny and is really passionate about zoology. However, he does not use D2L, so you really need to attend class. Make sure you also do the readings from the textbook because he expects that you have done them and will put questions from them on the test.
Class was a lot harder than I expected. Take good notes and pay attention. Lectures were interesting, tests were a bit difficult. He only chooses 2-4 questions from the textbook on the exams so it's not essential to have. For the assigned book about otters, I never read it and did fine.
This was the hardest class I have taken. Honestly, if it weren't for the library assignment, I wouldn't have passed. Pay attention in lecture. I also did not read the otter novel and did just fine. Lecture was not the problem, it was the lab practicals. My suggestion is take GREATTTTTT notes.
Dr. Fish's lectures are very well put together. He is actually very approachable and has great stories to tell. I have taken him for zoology and now marine mammals and his lecture styles are the same. He tells you great details that are good to know if you are interested in animals. I don't know why people are so hard on him on here.
Dr. Fish is a wonderful professor, zoology is just difficult. It was honestly the hardest class I've ever taken in my life. It's a LOT of memorization and start studying at least a week before exams to make sure you know all the terminology. My greatest compliant is he doesn't use D2l so we can't have access to the notes & graded by few things.
This class was very hard in general and there isn't much to help your grades if you do badly on tests. There isn't any homework so you're solely graded off three exams, and the corresponding lab. I would recommend going to office hours.
zoology is just a nightmare in itself. im in organic chemistry and this is a breeze compared to that mess. just horrible. if you do bad on 1 exam youre done for the semester
Fish knows what he's talking about but comes off very condescending. He doesn't use D2L and will NOT give you his lecture slides if you miss class. Everything he says is fair game for the exams which are way harder than expected. This class requires a lot of outside study time.
Good teacher and is very passionate but record lectures to listen back on and make sure you study for everything at least a week in advanced. Doesn't help much in office hours so read textbook.
Dr. Fish is so very clearly passionate about what he is teaching. However, he seems to care very little about individual students and can be hard to talk to, due to the fact that he makes you seem like an idiot if you don't understand a topic. Other than that, his lectures are full of so much knowledge and can be pretty entertaining at times.
He gives the occasional extra credit for showing up in class. The exams are tough, no doubt about it. Just study and youll be okay. Make sure you go to class because he doesnt post the PowerPoints. If you do poorly in lecture, you can make a lot up in lab if you do well enough.
He isn't for everyone. You have to be a certain type of student to do well in his classes. Tests are rather difficult, and labs can be a nightmare if you don't work hard. I had to have spent at least 8 hours a week - probably more - studying for this class alone. Pay attention, go to class, and take amazing notes.
this is the hardest class I have ever taken in my entire life.
Fish is so knowledgable and passionate. He is a difficult professor and you can't skip class because slides aren't online. Zoology is also just a difficult course and is memorization heavy. He's intimidating but a gem. Work hard, read the textbook and show up to class. Don't take this class if you don't want a challenge.
No approachable at all. Literally told me to get out of his office when I went in for help. PowerPoints are useless and his lectures are hard to follow. Doesnt post his lecture on D2l
Dr. Fish is one of those professors that would've been amazing in the 70's. He needs to get with the times, he doesn't upload ANYTHING online. No grades, no lectures, and even when I asked for him to send me the lecture material when I had an EXCUSED absence he said I better get notes from a classmate. And the only things that are graded are tests.
When I talked to him one on one I felt like he was rude. In large lectures he isn't so bad, but overall has a bad attitude towards students. He keeps the lectures interesting but there are no assignments (only lab assign.), just exams so if you do bad on the exams... forget it. His exams are not easy! His lectures are detailed with no help in notes
THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE HAD!!! Dr. Fish was RUDE didn't seem to care about his students at all. On top of that he was a bad teacher. AVOID his class and lectures at all costs! Do keep in mind I took his class online, but I heard the same story from friends who had him in person.
Classes are mandatory and participation matters. He takes up the entire 3:50 hours and it is soooo long. He doesn't post slides online and goes too quickly, so you need to take notes fast. Lots of reading. The exams are essays and they are LENGTHY! The class itself is interesting but the class is harder than it needs to be.
Dr. Fish makes his comparative class brutally difficult in person. Despite hours of in-person practice and studying it is still my lowest grade. What actually makes me mad is how he made the class the easiest class in the bio department when the course moved online. I understood before he wanted us to learn, but he clearly doesn't actually care.
Don't know why these reviews are bad. Dr. Fish is a very good professor and puts a lot of effort into his lectures. You can tell he is really passionate about his job and tries to make things entertaining despite being online. He encourages questions so don't be afraid to ask. Doesn't post his notes so make sure you pay attention. No hw just tests.
Dr. Fish is an amazing professor, but his classes are difficult. Slides are not posted online and he hands out articles to read that could be on the exams. Your grade is divided between a midterm, final, and group research project so STUDY HARD! Don't take this class if you aren't committed to studying. I recommend everybody take his class once!
Dr Fish never came to class prepared, never made powerpoint slide, and never taught me anything in class. My 2 hour lab was an independent study block and Dr fish was basically just our classic rock DJ. He made fun of other students in front of me to try and be funny and yelled at me once for asking too many questions.
I was not a fan of frank fish. lectures very fast and does not post the slides online. I found myself frantically writing the whole time to not miss anything. Exams were 3 long answer (which are pretty lengthy and 9 short answer . Exams are based on class and reading he hands out. Lots of papers about 7-8 for each exam.
Smart man but does not come off friendly at all. He is very cocky and intimidating. Will call you out on things. Lots of articles! Only 3 grades total worth 150 pts each. 2 all essay exams and a research project/poster. Material is not super difficult though and he is lenient with grading on exams. Does not give out slides, most have only pics.
He is very funny, and straight forward. Exams are straight from lecture, i suggest to take handwritten notes to draw structures. READ THE BOOK. You will spend hours in the lab, use quizlet. He is very straight forward, and it willing to help. no homework, just exams. Plenty of extra credit. HARD CLASS, but he makes it manageable.
Good professor who teaches a difficult course. Experienced and knowledgeable about material. However you will need to put in a lot of your own work to succeed.
I have had an overall great experience at WCU, but respectfully Prof. Fish's class was awful. He turned on a radio and walked around for 2 hours during lab. Almost no help at all. Not a good teacher imo
Ugh. That is my one worded description of this professor's class. He could at least try to be more pleasant. In my lab, he made comments/jokes which made some in the class so uncomfortable that we considered bringing it to the department's attention. I regret using my tuition on his course. His course work lacks enthusiasm. Avoid if you can.
