He sucks and all he does are diagrams and doesn't explain anything and makes the tests ridiculously hard.
Fowler is an amazing professor. I only regret that I will not be able to have him for orgo (hes retiring) This man will be missed!!
"puff the magic dragon" is the class website theme song
Very caring professor, which is nice in such a big class. Also has good lectures.
Horiible professor! Cannot teach for anything. makes things so much more harder than they really are.
Most uncompromising man on the planet.
He is a pretty good teacher.
test are just right... T.A.'s help a lot
amazing ppt's despite the fact that he uses the same ones from past year(s) (updated, of course).
whoever said that he's retiring...ur soo wrong? where the hell did u hear that? i talked to him like 2 days ago and he said that he wont be teaching che 321 but he will the next semester. also, he's an awesome prof..he really helps u out alot
He is very helpful. He actually came in my recitation and asked if we had any questions. Pretty good lecturer
In class he went over the most basic stuff, but a lot of test questions were on the hardest topics that weren't clearly explained in lecture.
You will get junk organic chemistry from this man. All he will do is repeat day after day how lipids are greasy and discuss why amide linkages don't rotate - meanwhile he will rush through important topicssaying "I think youcan appreciate that __ occ
Good professor. His lectures are pretty clear. He does skimp a little on some of the more difficult reactions, but what he does cover (about 90% of exam material) is well-done.
I dont know what everyone is complaining about. This guy takes his test questions straight from the workshops and homework. If you are too lazy to do work in a 322 chem course you have no right to complain. He was very helpful when i asked him questions, and hes enthused about teaching.
I took Medicinal Chemistry with him and I am not complaining about anything so everyone who is needs to shutup. He is a very good professor and its just a question of whether you are interested in learning or not.
Great Professor. Clear lectures, straight forward tests. What else could you ask for?
For such a difficult topic, he makes it interesting and not so intimidating. Those who complain are the ones not making the effort. It IS hard so some ppl will struggle and need more time to study and see the connections. But all the help you need IS there. You can get orgo but for most it won't happen overnight and just scanning the material.
I'll give him a good rating for the compassion he at least appears to possess towards his numerous students who wonder as I do about the purpose of it all. You can tell he doesn't share that sentiment though when he starts to gush about the wonders of some reaction but what do you expect from a chemist? Bio majors/non chemists will do fine with him
aww he's such a cute guy... he really cares about his students, the subject is hard but he does a good job at trying to explain the material and he is funny!
didnt get the grade i expected but fowlers great/ hes sucha sweetheart . go to lectures and read in advance and ull be alright
Great professor. He makes learning about chem somewhat bearable. Very enthusiatic about his subject and very willing to help. Read the book, do the assigned problems and look over the workshop and you'll do fine on the exams.
Very Good and caring professor. Better than that **** sampson
Down to earth but brutally honest. is willing to help you if he knows you'll try. orgo is no joke you have to keep up and do everything assigned. he is always willing to help.
Orgo is hard, but he tries to explain concepts clearly, which is good. work hard and you'll do fine
He is a kind professor who is willing to help out if you show that you are putting in the effort.
Very fair and moves at a realistic pace. Sometimes the most interesting part is when he has to go through 3 sets of mic's to get through the lecture
He is such a waste to go to. My clicker had problems with me the entire semester, he told me there was nothing he could do. He is horrible when going to see him for help because he makes u think about everything, but he doesnt show you anything, so if your clueless he wont help, just make it worse.
He's a pretty good teacher- explains things clearly. His tests are maddd hard- study study study
I went to class, asked madd questions, read and annotated the textbook and still did OK. Go to class with this guy - he knows what he's talking about, at least I liked him better than Lauher. He screws up a few times on PPT, makes ok jokes, overall pretty good prof - learned alot.
if it wasn't for the cps clicker i wouldn't have shown up for lecture...always brought a soduko puzzle to lecture...his exams for free response is hard =[[ so study study study meow
Good professor, great guy, makes good jokes, lectures are RIDICULOUSLY easy compared to exams. he puts simple simple things in lecture notes but test and workshop questions are hard. Know the workshop and book questions for moderately difficult tests.
he's a good guy and great professor if you put in the work. he turned things around for me after i had a rough time in 321. his tests aren't bad...just put in the work.
Prof. Fowler is a great teacher for organic chemistry. Very clear in his concepts, very passionate about the stuff he's teaching; funny; always helpful during office hours; exams are not hard as long as you attend all the leatures and do the material he emphasizes on.
Professor Fowler was great. I had him both for orgo 321 and 322. He makes a very hard subject less difficult by explaining things clearly. After one test where everyone did poorly, he asked the class what he could do to make it easier the next time around. He's very nice; always waves to me when I see him on campus.
I love professor fowler! He is extremely passionate about what he does, and his enthusiasm really makes the students want to do well. The material is difficult but he does his best to help you understand what is going on. I definetly recommend him to anyone taking orgo.
Great Professor, great guy, very funny and makes orgo class a lot more fun than usual. His exams are hard, but I think that it is pretty fair. He goes through the slides very slowly and well and makes sure that we understand the materials. Highly recommended.
best chem prof ever... if u need to take orgo, this guy is da one who should teach u... i just love him.! he even comes to da lectures while some other prof is teaching so that he can help students who have questions. go to lectures for cps points, do da workshops, do well on da final, ace da class!
Very striaght forward. Below comments sum it all up.
Amazing Professor
Agree with the person below, hes a nice old man, was much nicer in 321, but still nice in 326, look over lectures, workshops, and repeat DONT read the textbook, its a waste of time, it sucks, read lectures, make sure you can do the problems in lecture, and recitation, just dont memorize the answers know WHY! and you should be set
He is very helpful professor. Go to class everyday, take notes, do problems from hw rect and past exams. go over his lecture notes and read the book to understand the topics he covers. the tests are fair. basically study everything that will be assigned and you will get an A
Love him, he knows what he is doing he explains very well, and if you ask him to explain something he has no problem saying it over and over until you get it and know it!
Prof Fowler is a great teacher, and a great guy. He was not kidding that if you mess up on a test, and prove yourself in the end, you it will not go unrecognized. If you do poorly on an exam, show that you know your stuff by doing well on the final. Just don't depend on the final to be the only test that you do well on. It's not that easy.
He is one of the best chemistry professors in stony brook. Cares about his students, and is willing to go out of his way to help you out if you showed eagerness, and interest towards learning. His lectures are clear, and exams are fair. He is not an easy teacher, but he is most fair. Expect hard challenging questions on the exam that was covered b4
best chemistry professor I have ever had. The enthusiasm that he has makes you want to do well in the class. Difficult material but he does his best to get everyone to understand it. Exams are fair, as long as you read over the lecture notes and practice the concepts you will do fine. Highly recommend this professor.
This man is super fit for his age. Can't imagine orgo without him. I'm always surprised by how quickly the class ends...it's that good :) The best chemistry professor in Stony Brook.
Professor Fowler is in a league of his own. I learned more from this course than any other. The way that the class is designed displays the splendor when there is art in teaching. Challenging? Yes. Impossible? No. Also, don't come into the class thinking "Organic Chemistry is hard", it will hurt you. Besides, there are harder courses out there.
Ok. So love orgo and it will love you back. This teacher is amazing, he makes the subject so interesting even if you hated it. The exams are challenging , but if you study it wont be hard at all. Fowler is very honest and have a good heart. I wish more professors are like him. The final is hard so don't count on it to get you the A study for mds
He is enthusiastic during lecture, but he isn't very approachable and a lot of people, including me, hated his teaching style: You are expected to come to class already having learned the material, and lecture just serves to emphasize certain points with clicker questions. So it makes it easy to fall behind. Midterms were fair, final was hard.
He is a really cute old man that will make orgo rock your world! Extremely funny and enthusiastic in class. He loves his wife!
Amazing professor best teacher ever
He is funny. But the test is not funny at all:(. The first two test was easy (to me). but the third one was f u cking hard! well, not that hard but you won't have enough time to finish this! Each question need to think very carefully and slowly!! Damn! I don't know what the final will look like... and not sure how he will grade this class!!!! Study
Difficult class to teach, but he does it well. Gives loads of clicker points. Don't be intimidated to go to his office hours. He's very helpful! Practice as much as you can to get through this class.
He is the best teacher i've ever had.VERY enthusiastic, makes the subject very interesting, i can not wait until next semester.
If you are good in solving puzzles/riddles/etc.then this class is 4u.Remember the basics from notes/text but need to be flexible with mind.Def brain teaser.1st/2nd exam generally easy, but it picks up.Final was ultimate brain teaser.GO to lecture/WS,get ur pts.Ask4helpifuneed!Fowler great orator&man.Very helpful.Thereiscurve, but many smart students!
It's organic chemistry - it's painful no matter who teaches it, but fowler is a devoted teacher who gives very good lectures. If you pay attention, and study like hell, theres no way you can fail the class. Getting an A is very difficult though.
Great guy, keeps the lectures interesting and fun. However, his tests are very very tricky. Watch out!!
He is an amazing teacher, still very enthusiastic after so many years of teaching the same exact thing to the same mostly uninterested students. If you analyze the chapters, do every quiz to 100%, attend every recitation and understand what's going on,and go to the CLC to really have concepts down pact, you will get an A. Now, who can do all four?
Stop doing so many damn clickers. He fights with technology. How about you teach the class Fowler - that would be helpful. Go to Todd Tutor!
he does not want to teach. He wants students to teach themselves?? Class is mandatory for clicker grade but who knows any of the questions??? He gets excited when the class answers correctly but it is the TA's that feed the answers. why not post the notes up right away so we can study?? Makes no sense. if u want a good grade go to Todd.
If everyone does good on a test he'll make the next test extremely hard, if not, then he makes it easier. His final is very very very hard, seeing how he teaches absolutely nothing in lecture. He shows slides with examples of reactions, but does not actually bother to teach anything. He assumes people kno stuff by doing clicker questions. GO TO TODD
he put material on the final that we never learned in class, and if we did, the questions on the test were specifically designed to throw us off. your best bet is to go to todd. if you pay attention during todd's you will succeed in the class. i actually enjoyed organic chemistry after going to todd's classes. he's the man!
Like everyone says, go to Todd. He will definitely help you grasp the concepts. I really hated it when he called on people during class, everyone got so nervous hoping it wasn't them. I don't think it's a useful tool in teaching students. He's still enthusiastic about the subject, but it doesn't mean he's a great teacher.
Awesome teacher. He is so enthusiastic. Dothe problem of the day everyday and you'll be a wiz at this in no time.
Mad hard class. I had to use most of my time studying for this class to get my A. I ended up getting a C on my 2 other classes. PRO TIP: Go to Toddtutor.
completely useless to me
He is one of the best professors I have ever had. He made organic chemistry fun and interesting and easier to learn than I thought it would be. The exmas are very challenging and you must study a lot for them. The online quizzes help a lot. Easily one of my favorite teachers ever. He is also very funny and lively.
You learn nothing from the lectures in my opinion. You will have to teach yourself.. and the professor is almost 80 years old, so hes not as quick as he used to be id imagine 20-40 years ago
Orgo is hard, but Fowler is especially dedicated to helping students succeed. You need to attend the lectures and read, but as long as you put the work in you can do well. A lot of people complain about his teaching style, but in my opinion all lecture hall classes should be run this way. His lectures are better than Grubs's in my opinion.
awesome
Great Prof.
This guys really enthusiastic but active learning only works if you read the text before going to class. So do so!
good teacher. not the best, but better than the gen chem teachers. def read the txtbk before going to class. fowler likes to ask questions in class to see if you know the material before he explains it. overall nice and enthusiastic guy.
OMG, he is THE worst prof ever. seriously I have never had anyone worse. Grading system is unfair, exam questions come from nowhere (also puts stuff from later chapters), and he doesn't even give you enough time to finish. But you know the worst thing of all?! He does not teach a thing!! He is the perfect example of what a professor should NOT be!!
He doesnt teach anything at all. He expects students to know everything b4 coming to class. Only thing he does,is ask clicker questions. I didnt learn anything from class. The TA's were the only reason that i passed the class.
The TAs were great but Dr. Fowler was also good at exlaining concepts. Orgo is hard so don't expect to learn this stuff completely on your own. It's up to you to understand, not the professor. Exams 2 and 3 were pretty brutal but Exam 1 and the Final were both pretty lenient.
Orgo is not as bad as people think it is b4 they ever start studying it. The professor is funny(makes me laugh when i watch it on echo) but HE DOES NOT TEACH MUCH AT ALL-LECTURES R USELESS BUT U GOTTA B THERE FOR THE CLICKER PTS. GO TO TA in CLC, study, pick what u dont understand and go over it w/ TA and u should do well. DO PREVIOUS EXAM PROBLEMS
He has a giant lecture but does make an attempt to help the individual and keep people occupied. It is an annoying subject and he isn't fantastic, but he isn't that bad either.
Do not take his class organic chemistry class if you intend on learning anything. He's doesn't teach, just makes test for you to do poorly on. He does not curve grades even though the class average was 55. My advice is take it at another college or university and transfer the credits over. He's a nice guy, but not at a remotely competent professor.
Easy to talk to. Ask any question with confidence. Class follows at a nice pace - This is a MUST TAKE class for any science major! Lots of fun!
Prof Fowler truly cares about his students. However his teaching style is not conducive to my learning style. After getting an A- in 321 I decided to go to Todd for 322, A. It is a large time and money commitment but it is the best way to be taught orgo. That being said if you are a student who is willing to read the text and learn fowler is fine.
It's orgo so its not easy but if you read ahead and do the H.W. you will get an A with less effort then you think. For those people who say the class is not curved a 60 is a B so there is a huge curve that decrease to where a 90 is an A. Also if you go to lecture and workshop and get your full credit your grade goes up a whole letter grade.
Smart man but don't really know how to pass the knowledge to students. He waste too much time running around and asking students question. I learned almost100% of the stuff from recitation and reading book. He is a good guy but horrible teacher.
Professor Fowler is a really nice guy and who wants all of his students to do really well. He teaches most of the concepts by working through sample problems in class, he takes a very interactive approach to learning. The one negative is that solutions to work shops.
Amazing, I got an A and never read the textbook. I would love to take him again if I could.
He puts a problem on screen and asks students with microphone how to solve them. Some studets come up with bad explanation or the wrong asnwer which I found really confusing. he should just explain the solution first and then give example.
It is all about clicker questions. i dont know how you can learn from that.but compare to others, he is better. why those professors dont teach at stony brook?
Organic Chemistry 1 is a joke to begin with. Class with this guy is completely useless, it's all about clicker questions, which are easy but waste time. I learn NOTHING in lecture but you have to go. He calls on random students to answer easy questions which they get wrong, he doesn't really explain the answer after though. TA's are helpful though.
Honestly treats his class like a game show. I thought Professors were supposed to teach, not just review?
The best organic teacher ever, his lecture the best and the best part yet? This class will weed out so many premed students. If you want to beat the class you're going to have to be a gunner. My only advice is to attend both lectures, take it from me, I got a 100 of all of my exams so far. ;)
Awesome and enthusiastic teacher. Class isn't boring due to nearly constant clicker questions. He uses very very little time to actually lecture, which means you have to learn the info in other ways. Exams are somewhat unfair in my opinion due to random hard questions from class showing up on the test instead of the main points.
Stony Brook's organic chemistry course is one of the hardest in NY state. If you are the guy who tends to learn most of the stuff from lecture then this is ABSOLUTELY NOT THE CLASS FOR YOU. If you are willing to read like a maniac and truly understand the mechansims behind the concepts then take this class. Otherwiese PASS IT.
Really easy class, I was getting raped by my low midterms grades, but then I pulled an A on the final. My grade went from B- to A. I'm so happy. Amazing teacher, with very nice grading. I got an A and so can you. This guy is very nice during office hours.
This class will always have something within my heart, I got an A but only because I lucked out and got an A on the final. Going to work harder next time and not try to cram. (Thank to todds I crammed the final and aced it).
Ok teacher, but I never went to class. Easy A since I already learned this in high school.
Im not sure if Fowler is a poor professor or just lazy at this point, he's been teaching orgo here forever. Of course orgos challenging but they make it more challengin by being ambiguous with exam material and asks kids clicker questions instead of teachin; Go to todds and do well on the final; grading is kind if youre finals better than your avg
This class is not bad, not very hard to get an A. The only people who complain about this class are a) Never study and think they can do well, b) People who party every day and think that pulling an all nigher is good will get an A (These people get the C lmao), and c) Dumb people. Like many people said before this class is easy in terms of work.
I would just like to caution you regarding ochem; it is considered the "weed out" class for premed (despite it not being as difficult as ppl make it out to be). This class isn't hard, but may seem to fail in this class since they never study. I got an A because I learned orgo in stuyvesant. P.S Most of the TA's are clueless, don't depend on them.
Welcome to College Chemistry where you are meant to learn quick or be weeded out. He is a great teacher, as far as college goes, and takes her time explaining the material, again as far as college goes. Work hard, study harder, kiss ass, come to class, DO PRACTICE EXAMS AND EASY A. EASY A FOR THE SMART PEOPLE.
He is very good professor and those who say he is hard are just dumb asses who has no interest in academics whatsoever. He is helpful and very nice. Recommend to everybody who is interested in whatever they are studying.
This is the hardest I've worked for an A. Ignore those who say this class is easy. That isn't true. Fowler is a very good professor though.
Easy class, read the book and learn the mechanisms. If you're still confused go to him for help, he's more than willing to help out students. Do the old exams, they're basically identical to what you'll see on the current exams.
Class is a glorified workshop; there is NO teaching, just quizzes. And when half the class gets the question wrong, NO explanation is given. Lecture is devoid of material or education. Teaching yourself is the only way to do well. I understand working hard, but I want education I pay for. Fancy slides can't replace a professor's effort to teach.
For those who are not naturally automatic amazing at chemistry then brace yourself because this class is HARD. Professor Fowler is good though and willing to help. Go to class for clicker questions they earn you an extra 120 points if you get clickers and go to recitations. Just study hard, read the book and get help if needed! Fowler is cool!
He doesn't really teach, he just go through the problems in class. So you have to study urself or go to Todd's to do well. Personally I thought 322 is easier than 321 but it depends since it might vary for everyone.
he does not teach you anything. just uses clicker qizzes to test you in class without any theory review. They expect you to learn everything on your own from textbook. the only reason to attend class is to receive clicker points. workshops are useless too. The only reason i passed is b/c i studied like crazy at Todd's tutoring. Todd taught me.
He definitely tries his best to teach and is very enthusiastic. On the whole, he is an alright professor. To do well in this class though requires a lot more work than just attending lecture. You need to teach yourself a lot of material with the textbook or get the TAs to teach it to you outside of class time.
Fowler is one of the most derange and lost professor I've ever had. He contradicts himself constantly, doesn't grasp the material himself, loses track of what he's doing in the middle of teaching, and best of all he admits to all of it. He's said "I don't know how you kids do it, if I took these tests I'd get all these questions wrong" and he's the one who makes the test. Just do Todd's, pray to whatever deity you believe in, and you should be ok.
A on final = A in class
Now that the reign of Fowler has concluded we can look back on his historical impact through a clear lens. Fowler represents Stony Brook well in a way: you must be prepared to teach yourself and bust your ass if you want to do well. He's not a bad guy, but certainy not an ideal lecturer...long live the king, however.
