Helpful with the students, the amount of classwork and project isn't overwhelming.
it's a lot of work. but if you manage to do a little bit everday, you'll be fine.
Fun teacher, I figured out his trick. If you need help with somethign or y0our writing, DONT ASK HIM IN CLASS. HE WONT GIVE YOUA CLEAR ANSWER. Most likely he'll answer you with a pathedic question. ASK him @ office hours & on Blackboard

worst teacher ever! i don't know what these other students are thinking when they rated him. if you ever get stuck with him drop/withdraw, whatever you have to do get out. there is a reason why he has taught at 10 colleges over the past 10 years
Take this class if you have no problem writing .
HE SUCKS!!! WHAT ARE YOU ALL THINKING. HE DOESNT ANSWER OUR QUESTIONS, HE GIVES US BOGUS ESSAYS, I MEAN REALLY...WHO CARES ABOUT THE LOSS OF "IT"? HE SUCKS DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!! IF YOU GET STUCK WITH HIM, DROP IT AND GET WRITTEN INTO AN
I can't say he's the best, but he sure gets his class working. Stressful work, but it does make you think.
Frank is great. His use of blackboard is excellent and if you have a brain and a drive to succeed you will do fine in his class.
He sucks
The essays we write about are really boring. He doesn't explain things well and when you have a question, he'll just ask you another question, to confuse you even more. Avoid this class if you can.
People who think this class is hard are obviously 8 steps away from intelligence. Frank's a great guy who encourages thinking out of the box. Fear not the unknown and proceed with an open mind or else you will recieve nothing from this class.
First off he is a really nice guy in general but not that clear in what he wants in the essays he assigns and is also a hard grader... only 1 person in my class got an A which is pretty ridiculous, but he uses blackboard well and is very appoachable
A wonderful teacher. The test are all essay and very easy, you cant get anything wrong as long as you support what you say. There are four papers to write, but nothing too drasctic. 3 pages at the most and he spreads them out fairly easy. Easy class guy
Be prepared to use Blackboard excessively! Frank makes you write out end letters summarizing papers, comment on paragraphs, and stupi $--- like that. He also cant pronounce certain things: i.e. simi-LAR-ly.
Yes, he makes you work your arhss off, but it's worth it. You'll pass the prof. exam with flying colors. He picks literature that's interesting and informative. Trust, he's leniant.
Okay, it's not a hard class, but he doesn't teach English! His discussions don't relate and you don't really do anything in class. His paper assingments seem easy, but then he gives you a C for missing a major point. You can never get a straight answer.
Frank is very misleading. He makes you buy an excessive amount of books, and you use them serioulsy once! In addition to this, he is very unclear about what he wants, and he never gives you a straight answer. His Final exam is outrageous
Very unclear about what he expects. Annoying writing techniques.
he gives you papers EVERY DAY.. and isn't very nice, or COOL! i don't like him
Welll..this teacher gave me the first C on a paper I have ever gotten..and sad to say, it was one of the highest grades in the class. His grading policy is extremely unclear, but at least he lets you re-do your papers. If you dont want to work, dont take his class.
Even if his class is a little bit difficult, i thoroughly enjoy it. Take his class but ready for a little bit of a challenge
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS HE GIVES OUT HORRIBLE GRADES!!!!!! and he doesn't even know what he is teaching and makes you write down every little thing
Frank is an amazing teacher. You guys have no idea what you're talking about. Nobody has ever taught me to appreciate writing and reading like he has. Maybe you should all learn to pay attention and party less and you'll realize that his class is enjoyable and informative.
i love frank he is the greatest teacher eveeeer take his class
Frank is the best!!! So good I wrote a song about him and I'm taking his Eng 2 class this semester!
Frank is one of the best teachers i have ever had. He kept the class interesting, which made doing the reading and assignments much easier. He is very understanding, and helps you with anything you may have a problem with.
Frank Gaughan is the most amazing professor ever. There is a lot of work and a lot that he expects from you, but he's so helpful and relates to each student unlike any other professor (not to mention he's really hot). Take his class if you have the chance!
frank is the best teacher i have ever had :) he is great anybody who has to take english as a freshman should take him...and hes not bad to look at either :)
frank rocks, he is big on writing, but just wants you to understand the material. Assignments can be a little unclear, but if you ask him for help he is always willing and gives you ideas. :0)
A condescending professor, he speaks about theories but does not teach one how to apply them. His comments on papers are too general and not relevant to revision. I am an honors student and would have liked some guidance. I received an A, but I left with the same knowledge that I came in with.

FRANK IS THE SHIZNIT!!! He's probably my favorite professor, his class is relaxed and he's not afraid to say whats on his mind, and he grades fair.
meow ;)
Frank is a great professor. It's true that you will have a lot of papers to write, but he is very helpful. Some of the work is boring but he does his best to make it enjoyable. He really cares about his students. I highly suggest taking him. He is one of the nicest prof. at Hofstra
Professor Gaughan's class was awesome! He is really open minded and helped my writing out a lot. I learned a lot from his class and think that he is a really sweet and passionate teacher. He definitely made my freshman first semester easier and I would highly recommend him. :)
Frank is awesome. THe class is basically a couple of essays, no tests, no homework, and no final. The final is just the last essay. Once and a while, you'll have to write a one page entry to something. Easy to talk to and just a great professor.
Great professor, I highly recommend him to anybody who's really looking to improve their writing and be an active student. One of the best teachers I've ever had in my life.
Extremely understanding and helpful teacher. He's very really willing to help and he always responds to his emails quickly. He seems very interested in helping students improve their writing and works hard to provide as much feedback as possible! Class was interesting and he is very funny!
Frank is the man! He's always available for help outside of class and he really seems to want you to get a good grade. He can be a somewhat tough grader on papers, but also gives you the opportunity to revise for a better grade. Very interesting class!
Yes, he's helpful, but the class is boring. If you wanna read and write about literature, take his class. But if you just want to get engl2 over with don't take his class. Our 1st essay was, what is literature and what does it mean to you? Who cares?! I don't. But, the fact that you get as many revisions as you want is awesome!

Frank is fantastic. He knows that most kids don't want to take English 2 so he tries to make it as interesting as possible. He made me laugh every class. He really cares for his students and he really helped me improve my writing skills. A+ for Frank =]
Best composition class I've taken. Strives to make a writing class something that you actually look forward to and attend, and succeeds. Very fun class, if you participate.
Frank is a great professor. He makes it very easy for you to be a good writer which is awesome for a composition class. He cares about his students and really wants us to do well. An awesome professor, however some of the reading material is not that great (i.e. Rosenblatt), but hey he is definitely worth taking.
I regret taking his class. He's nice, helpful, but the writing assignments are lame, and the peer reviews are annoying.
Frank is a really great guy. He is always willing to help and will go out of his way to help students. His papers are pretty clear, but he's a pretty tough grder. However, he let's you rewrite the paper with his corrections for a better grade. If you want to improve your quality of writing, take him.
very clear and helpful
This class is a waste of time. I don't necessarily think it is Gaughan's fault but his method of teaching didn't help. We would read the text out loud that was assigned as HW, so doing that work was pointless. He's helpful when it comes to corrections and always gives you the opportunity to correct your work so it should be a pretty easy A.
Frank is a really great guy and a terrific professor. His class was very challenging, but I learned a lot about writing from him and I don't regret taking his class. He is a hard grader, but he allows students to revise their papers and offers great feedback. Take his class, but be ready for a lot of hard work.
He is such a good teacher. I never understood the readings but he always was helpful. He is fun in class and I took him 2 semesters.
like any other english class, freaken boring, reading and postings. tho he is such a freaken harsh grader. if u slack and lazy def not ur class. so dont take it
I am currently in Dr. Gaughan's WSC 001 class and I absolutely love it. I am actually going to take his WSC 002 class next semester. He is a funny guy and attempts to make class interesting. I highly recommend taking this class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I recommend going to class.
Professor Gaughan is great. He is a fair grader and very helpful. The textbooks are used pretty often but the reading assignments are very manageable. Attendance isn't mandatory but as he states, if you miss more than 5 classes you should withdraw because you will miss too much. I plan on taking WSC 002 with him in the Spring.
Very good professor. Makes class interesting. I highly recommend his class.
Professor Gaughan is a really great instructor. He is very helpful and wants you to succeed. The books are used pretty often and while attendance isn't mandatory you can't miss too much or you will fall behind. Take his class!
Professor Gaughan is awesome! So helpful and really fair. Gives you plenty of opportunities to get a better grade.
Professor Gaughan is a really nice guy who is always willing to work with students. He's a really easy grader &even gives you the chance to re-do every paper &drops the lowest paper grades if you go to the writing center. He tries to make the class interesting & always explains the readings. His assignment topics are actually interesting too!
Prof. Gaughan is awesome!! I took him for my wsc 001 and his topic was interesting, his papers were pretty easy to write. He's there if you need help and he's lenient.
The class was kind of boring, but the 3 major essays followed a general theme. Professor Gaughan is actually really helpful though, because he will meet with you at any point. There are rewrites for all 3 essays with a writing center incentive (if you go to the WC at all for the essay, you get the higher grade of the rewrite rather than the average
He's honestly the one professor I actually learned from and is there when you need him. Definitely would recommend everyone to take him.
Literally the best teacher ever! He really tried his best to make the lectures fun even though they are long. He is really there for you whenever you need and he lets you redo essays for a better grade!!! EVERYONE TAKE HIS CLASS HE IS AWESOME!!!
He makes a mandatory writing class worthwhile. I enjoyed the assignments/theme of the class and learned a lot. Very understanding and helpful.
He has a very monotone voice so his lectures seem long and boring. He also is a tough grader on papers but offers good feedback and does allow rewrites. He is very helpful and understanding though and will listen to and question what you say. He can be funny at times too.
This class was incredibly boring and annoying. Like other people said, this isn't entirely his fault, but if you think taking a mandatory writing class is already a pain, look elsewhere. That being said, if you do care about WSC, he's not too bad
Professor Gaughan is an excellent teacher. Knowledgeable in the subject and cares very deeply about the entire class understanding and improving. When I worked hard, I got As. When I didn't, I got Bs and Cs, but he lets everyone resubmit essays for a new grade. 3 essays over the semester, and he's a great teacher. If you want to do well, you will.
Difficult professor with short daily assignments and a huge focus on the three large essays(worth most of your grade); however, I did learn so much and my writing has improved significantly despite doing well in AP lit and Lang in high school. Would recommend. He knows his stuff and teaches very well.
If you want an A in his class, you will have to work for it. He allows revisions and you should definitely take advantage of them. He is a tough grader but he wants you to do well. His lectures put me to sleep almost every class. I wouldn't take him again because the essays were so boring to write and they became overwhelming.
Professor Gaughan is my all time favorite professor. He's incredibly passionate about what he teaches, beyond intelligent and always includes interesting anecdotes in class discussions.
He is OK. You will read a lot of difficult and boring essays. The 3 papers are this: an exploratory essay, a literature review, and a persuasive essay. The most difficult one was the exploratory essay and myself and a lot of my peers received poorer grades on it. Does group work. One presentation on the persuasive essay. Encourages questions.
Professor Gaughan brought my writing skills to another level! He is extremely nice and willing to help anyone who asks and shows interest. There are three essays and one final. He also lets you revise your papers. There is no reason to not do well in his class! Take him!
This *can* be easy class, but you need to put the work in. His grades are mostly based on 3 essays, which can later be rewritten for a better grade (HINT HINT, GO TO THE WRITING CENTER). Just pay attention in class. I know someone who failed this, but only because he never bothered to try. Listen Gaughan's feedback and you'll do well. That's it.
Couldn't ask for a better professor in this course! Sooo committed to get me to pass the class! A previous professor for this course was insensitively rude and refused to work with me, but Gaughan?? WOW!! His resilient effort and success is unbelievably spectacular! Truthfully, his essays are difficult to understand but worth your time! Take him!!!
Loved this professor. Interesting discussions and you will enjoy and get more out of this class if you participate. About 5 papers all semester. Pretty easy. Most papers were 2-4 pages except the final. Professor G is amazing, a fun dedicated teacher who genuinely cares about his students.
Dedicated professor. Although I thought that I was a good writer coming into university, his class proved me WRONG. He cares about his students but is relatively a hard grader. You need to be absolutely sure you are a good writer before you walk in his class to get an easy A. If you don't think you are a good writer get ready to put in WORK.
Ok.. I dont recommend taking him for WSC unless hes your final option. Readings are excruciatingly boring, as you are given barely any help to understand them.. Highly recommend Prof. Dandridge if youre at Hofstra. Faaaaar better at teaching the subject, makes the class funny and I learned a lot about my writing!
Great!
Nice man, but its an English class not an art class. We had to study paintings and write papers about them and apply them to writing studies. It was absolutely ridiculous. If he didn't like it then thats that. I dont't recommend if you want to pass with an A or B.
Cares for students and gives the chance to revise, yet a very tough grader over the smallest things. Boring lectures, boring assignments, don't really learn much in the class.
One of the best professors I have ever taken at Hofstra. He seriously cares about helping his students do better grade wise as well as students developing better writing skills. From someone who absolutely despises writing, he managed to make the class fun and enjoyable the time. I recommend taking him for this course.
I love frank
Constant reminders about up coming homework and tests. Very clear when explaining lessons.
He was a great person however the lectures were boring and he was work heavy. Every class something was due, he is very caring and willing to help you out but grades very seriously. Revisions are always given!
Prof. Gaughan is extremely understanding, and in saying that he also is a person that shows passion for what he does. Because he enjoys, or seems to enjoy, what he is teaching, it makes the class even more enjoyable. While yes, writing is difficult, the rubrics and feedback really help later on.
There was something due every week and there were too many things for me to do. Grading is on the harsher side for papers and he takes lateness very seriously. He took 5 points off my final and he gave another guy a -20 for being late.
This professor is a great guy. He is really caring and super forgiving. He understands alot and forgives you. Honestly a great guy. Its hard to get a A in his class but hes a good teacher. sometimes hes a little boring but hes a good teacher.
I really, really liked Professor Gaughan. He's a very good guy, and very understanding as long as you communicate with him about what's going on. Had a few big essay assignments and some other smaller assignments, nothing too crazy. Definitely recommend!
Very nice guy but super boring lectures and a refuses to give an A.
Prof. Gaughan is the most caring and best professor I have had so far at Hofstra. The work is not difficult at all, he gives you plenty of time to do it, and is not a harsh grader. He is super easy to reach outside of class and is very understanding about you having a life outside of his class. Could not recommend him more for WSC.
He's super sweet and understanding! just make sure you communicate and you'll be good!
Just a fun and easy going professor. You do have a lot of reading, but that is every comp class. Essays are in class, and if you don't like your grade you have the opportunity to go to the writing center and redo it. Interesting material, love his class!
He is extremely easy to talk to about grades and wants you to do well. The class is mostly writing but it's not difficult. If you don't do well on an essay, he always gives opportunity for extra credit.
Very good and easy to talk to. Writing isn't too heavy and he provides good feedback to improve with, but you got to pay attention to the readings.
Prof. Gaughan is an understanding professor who cares about his students. The workload is manageable, but you'll need to put in the effort, especially on writing assignments. Unstuck AI and the free textbook are great study aids.
I took his class my first semester and he was super laid-back. Some of the texts are slightly difficult, but they are nothing out of the ordinary and he gives multiple attempts on quizzes. The lectures can feel boring, but he genuinely cares about his students and understands when you struggle with harder topics! My writing improved in his class.
Professor Gaughan is one of the nicest teachers on campus and knows exactly what he's talking about. All that he asks is that you participate in class do your work (which is pretty manageable and is usually classwork). Just be ready to proofread as fast as possible for many of the texts he gives out.
Such a nice guy! He truly cares about his students and when he saw me falling behind, he did not hesitate to speak to me and help me catch up on all my work. His work is not too hard but it isn't the easiest. I would def take him again!
His class was pretty easy and he did not require attendance. He is a pretty laid back guy, though sometimes hard to read, gave good feedback and was very helpful and communicative when need be. There is a decent amount of assignments, but they are all straightforward and just require a bit of work. Easy class, good Prof. I'd recommend.
I've always loved writing classes, I started hating them bc of my WSC001 prof & thought I was horrible, thankfully he changed that. He's a very caring prof, explains things well, and easy to reach outside of class. You have a some small assignments, some quizzes, & 3 large projects. Sounds like a lot but isn't. There's a lot of participation tho.
I feel my writing has really improved from this course. Quizzes have two attempts, and the most challenging portion of the class happened during finals week. Get ready to write a long paper, a presentation, and then an additional paper! But as long as you make adjustments, you will get a good grade. He is a nice guy who is very approachable.
