more interested in talking about race than journalism
every discussion eventually turned race related...he actually came off as the most **** person in the class...very defensive
Not at all understanding or nice for that matter. IF U R NOT A JRN MAJOR U R WORTHLESS TO HIM! And the B-52 club is the dumbest thing ever. Aviod at all costs!!!
very challenging teacher but he knows what he is talking about
cool guy, but demanding. i learned a lot from taking his class, he knows what he's doing.
If you are not a JRN major avoid this professor at all costs....if you are a JRN major avoid him at all costs. He will crucify you for the smallest mistake because he is blinded by his own arrogance b/c he thinks that he knows all, and we should submit to his preferences.
The worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Grades unfairly, makes every discussion about race, and just basically annoys the heck out of me.
If you are serious about being a journalist this is the class for you. Hard, but fair. Teaches what you are doing wrong and shows you how to do it right. Tough grader. Not for the easily offended. Expects professional work from serious students. Great class! Most helpful JRN class you will take!
Prof Harris is demanding and holds high expectations for all his students. If you take his courses seriously, you will learn and become a better write. He helped my writing more than any other professor in the JRN dept.
Prof. Harris is an excellent teacher. I never got the sense that he brought every topic back to racial matters. I am a better person and a better journalist for knowing him.
This professor can ruin yourself esteem and your life in one semester.

Prof. Harris is a throw-back to tough professors. He gets flack from students because he's so strick. He doesn't give out easy A's and apparently so many of his students just expect good grades because they put their name on a paper. He makes you earn your A and deserves to be appluaded for not being such a push-over. He expects your work to be done accurately and completely, and will not tolerate lateness and excuses. GOOD FOR HIM!
Professor Harris gives a lot of work, and he's a very tough professor, but he teaches you a lot. he sometimes seems to have favorites, and he's much less understanding and fair to these people.
No matter your background, you will leave his classes knowing how to write. His "mighty red pen" is a bit frightening, but it will make you into the best journalist you can be.
To all non JRN majors avoid. To JRN majors very tough class. He is very demanding and is just tough. Just like many proffessors grading system doesn't make much sense. Instead of being a good teacher criticizes to much. If you don't write his way then your way is wrong. Gives way too much work. To JRN majors bear with him and non majors stay away.
Horrible! The worst teacher i've ever had. Huge ****head. Stay away!!!
the most unhelpful professor i have ever come in contact with

Gives a ton of homework (we had 3 quizzes on the first day) but not too hard, all open book stuff. Wrote his own textbook for the class, which the school won't buy back, and it's completely useless. Will not allow anyone notecards during presentations. He rambles a lot without ever actually getting to a point. Don't waste your time! Gave me a C+ when I aced the midterm, final and never got below a 90 on a quiz!
Can be a little tough to deal with sometimes. Sometimes gets upset over silly things but not terrible overall.
Don't listen to these people! Prof. Harris is a very wise and intelligent man who knows how to teach. He expects you to do your best, and doesn't accept any less. His assignments allow you to be creative. These people just want good grades handed to them instead of working for it.
Awesome Professor!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously the worst professor in the world. I did all my assignments got B's on every single one even when I put the extra effort into the paper (hard grader). You have to participate a lot in this class or you will not pass. I did everything in my power to get at least a "C" ended up getting a "D". DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
Journalism students-- You will have to take this professor's class so I suggest you take it during a semester when your work load isn't too heavy. If you have the free time necessary to commit to his many assignments/quizzes, you'll do fine. If you are taking more then 5 classes, do extra curriculars and have a job, you WILL struggle just to pass.
Frank is a stickler about AP style but hell, someone has to be. Im tired of journalism students complaining about how hard he is when all they have to do is listen to the guy. If you ask him questions he will help you, and just follow his suggestions.
If you are a JRN major, there is no way around him. But honestly this prof is not hard, just VERY detail oriented (you can fail an article just for spelling a name wrong). But you know what? When it comes to actual editors when you graduate, this guy is a piece of cake. Learn from him and you'll be glad you never mispell again
Works you hard, but in the end all the work is worth it!
Very hard grader and tough..he acts like he's better than the students, rude answers to questions. couldn't avoid him-jrn major
Harris is not a difficult teacher, he just assigns a lot of work, and expects perfection. Some may say he asks too much, they say 'how can I be perfect all the time.' All I can say to you is if you aren't willing to put the extra effort in to be perfect, FIND A DIFFERENT MAJOR! Also I got an A in the class for those of you who say it's impossible.
After reading these comments, I was so afraid to take Harris! I have him now and I gotta say, he's not bad at all. I have him twice a week and Fri he assigns work via web vista. The pain is actually going out and interviewing people in a timely manner but I mean, that's what we are planning to do in our careers! I actually enjoy class, I got 90's!
Avoid. Can be extremely arrogant and unhelpful. Also he is not clear with assignments. Love the course, wrong pick of professor. Not a fan by any means.
I took him as an online class, which I do enjoy, but he was great as an online professor. Extremely helpful and was always willing to make the assignments interesting. I saw some of the comments and thought it he would be awful, but he's a great professor and he's not in my major!
I took his online class over the summer and it was a challenge, but likely better than taking it on campus. The book was used intensely and the assignments were hard to keep up with. Many assignments were not clear and he changed the due dates/times frequently. The material was interesting and he cares about the class content a lot. Not the best.
Not an easy professor, but definitely one of my favorites. He prepares you for the real world of journalism and doesn't cut you slack.
Honestly the worst professor I have ever had. I took his class online. He does not value anyones opinion. His assignments are not clear, and he is extremely rude. I would avoid him at all costs. There is a quiz almost everyday, along with oral presentations, midterm and a final.
The class involves a lot of work but Harris is a nice guy. The great thing is that the class is very straightforward as you essentially have the same assignment every week. Once you get the first few stories down, you'll get into a rhythm and they won't bother you that much. Class time felt unnecessary though, it'd be the exact same online.
This guy is the rudest teacher I have ever had in my three years of college. He overrides his own rubrics to give you a lower grade. DO NOT take this class
By far the worst teacher I have ever had at SCSU. Extremely rude and down right arrogant. He speaks to countless students in a way that I have never seen a teacher do at SCSU. I don't know how he has been teaching here for so long. Race in the news was the class name; apparently there are only African Americans and Caucasians. Hes absolutely awful
Professor Harris is one of the worst professors I've had. Very rude and mean. His opinion seems to be the only one that matters. Failed all my papers that were largely opinion based, mean to students who asked for help, made mean comments on papers if you didn't write to his standards, definitely shouldn't be teaching
Do not take his class. He overrides his rubric, grades way to hard! and doesn't care if anyone fails. His class average was a C and he was proud of that. For a 200 level class the expectations are way to high. I got all A's this semester and then an F in this class, which I did the most work that tells you something. Don't waste your time.
I think people over exaggerate on how tough this class is. He makes his instructions and rubrics very clear. All you have to do is follow the rubric, read the textbook, and do the work on time. I think he was a good professor and as long as you follow instructions, you'll do well in his class.
First off, EXTREMELY RUDE!!! Gives very poor feedback in class. Tells you to follow his rubric then ignores it when grading. More of a dictator than a teacher. You can't argue with him He'll just tell you that you're wrong and move on. Avoid at all costs unless you absolutely have to take him.
Professor Harris was honestly one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He overrides his rubrics and grades based on his opinion. If you don't agree with him then, your grade will reflect it. A lot of work to do for this class, and while it's not the hardest, it is very time consuming and annoying! Would never take a class with him again.
Love this teacher. He is a very clear grader, has criteria, as long as you read it you will be fine. Very interesting, you can tell he spends time on his lesson plans. Would take again and I am not even a journalism major.
It's taken me 10 years and many A+ papers to become a confident writer, but Harris has undone all that confidence. You can hand in a great article and still get a D. The articles follow the same rubric, but he finds a new way to take off points every week. His methods are rigid & antiquated. I've never worked so hard and had nothing to show for it.
Listen to his comments, rubrics, and guidelines (which are all thorough and readily available on BB9) and you should do fine. He wants to make sure that students leave his class with the skills needed for a career in journalism and he is a hard grader because of it. I have so much respect for Harris and a lot of other students do as well.
I am always a fantastic writer, passed every english class I have ever taken with great grades. But prof. Harris is great at ripping apart every single piece of your assignments. For an online class, his coursework is extremely heavy and his feedback is pompous and unhelpful. I do not recommend his classes to anyone.
You will only do well in this class if you have the exact same opinions as him. He is completely biased and teaches like he is above you. Incredibly rude comments to students when it comes to grading.
Professor Harris must have something wrong with him. He reprimands students in front of the class for missing class, even if they are out sick, have an ill family member etc. I took him for JRN 135 and he would often override his rubric to give his students zeroes. He does allow students to fix mistakes made on his projects, but it's not even worth
Took the online course . Professor is very rude and self-important. He overloads on online quizzes that take directly from textbook that he wrote and forces students to buy. Uses scare tactics for humor and offers no leniency. Grades are weighted with no second chances. If you are a working student or mentally ill student, do not take this course.
This class was easy but Professor Harris is very rude. He talks down to students like they're stupid. He is also a rather tough grader, none of the assignments are hard but they are time consuming. You also have to show up to every class you're only allowed three absences no matter what the reason.
Frank Harris seems to dislike you heavily if you support anything Donald Trump has to say, and most of his assignments are based around Donald Trump. He is very biased and very rude, do not talk to him if you have a problem.. just go to the head of the department. And trust me, you'll need to. Worst professor at SCSU by far.
He has rigid requirements and the online classes are MUCH harder than in-person. However, if you are a JRN major, he is very necessary. He very much prepares you for the industry and you will come out of his class as a better writer. And once you get to know him, he's a really good guy. Needs to dial back on his political/social views, that's all.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR ! Does not care about his students what so ever. The material is very interesting and did learn a few things but did not enjoy having him as a professor. I took his online course and completely hated it.
took his online class, and we had stuff due on the weekend. This class you still needed to show your face, there is a lot of times where you need to record yourself speaking as a grade. There were a lot of video assignments. The quizzes were easy but you need to get the book. We had a quiz final/midterm and a paper for each as well.
Hardest class I have ever taken. Before joining this class I emailed the professor. He replied in a timely manner, gave me lots of info and warned me before hand about how time consuming the course was. It is very fast paced. He is a tough grader. Keep his rubrics in mind. The quizzes are really easy, fill in the blank with the book.
The workload was extreme. For an online summer class, his coursework is extremely heavy (47 assignments) and Prof. Harris is great at ripping apart every single piece of your assignments BUT doesn't give much credit even though I rewrote everything. I do not recommend his classes to anyone. I did everything on time &rewrote everyth & still got a B-
Would not recommend this professor for anyone who isnt a journalism major . Took him for an online class and his workload and criteria was absurd . Very hard to pass unless you have a genuine interest in journalism .
I took his online W course. There are a lot of assignments but theyre not hard by any means. Just do your work and follow his rubrics and you will be fine. Those who hate him probably didnt do the work. He gives good feedback and is a quick grader. Im not a jrn major and I enjoyed this class. If you can keep up with assignments take the class.
Eight-week online class: Textbook is a necessity. Frequent timed short quizzes with answers directly from the book. It was over $100, the school is not buying them back. Tests were moderately difficult. Many video and written assignments (due any day of the week). Precisely follow his rubrics. Heavy penalties for late work. Quick email responses.
SCSU needs to get rid of this man. Terrible teacher. Super disrespectful. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS.
Doesn't care about his students. If you don't follow his rubric EXACTLY how it's written. Goodbye to your grade.
Didn't like jokes, was pretty mean and doesn't respond well to emails. He is super strict and you have to do webcam videos for the online course. It's as weird as it sounds.
He makes quizzes super easy then grades writing assignments as if you were an editor at the Washington Post. Not a kind talker & makes personal comments about himself on your graded papers. Super inconsistent with grading and you must check in online everyday or else youre guaranteed to miss something. Really dissatisfied with this course.
Harris has very clear criteria and the only reason you won't pass is if you don't follow the rubric. Read the book and follow his rules and it's a guaranteed A. It's not 'hard' work, he just has specific guidelines.
I took several of his classes as an undergraduate and while he is a strict, tough grader, you will leave his classes a better writer. Attendance isnt a chore, you should attend every class, thats what youre there for. Participate in class, ask questions, pay attention. Respect is earned in his class by doing the work and being prepared.
Very condescending. I took him for multiple classes and always had the same results. He is well respected, but he forgets that we are students too and we are not full time journalists which he expects us to be
I started his class not even a week ago but was up to date on my work. He decided to give me a zero on two video assignments I completed simply because the video was vertical instead of horizontal. I ask him exactly why and he responds that I should check my grades even though I have multiple times and am a working student. I dont recommend at all
Professor Harris Frank is someone I certainly won't be taking again. He's cool but I ain't having him ever again as a professor. Tough ass grader for what, and he don't accept late work. Don't even bother taking him. Look for another class to fulfill your Tier 2. He cool though, nice person , just won't be taking him again...
I'm dropping this guy class before it even starts. Already I do not understand how the university employs a guy who has had bad reviews since 2004! For an African-American man who preaches about tolerance and race, isn't very tolerable of ideas that aren't exactly his. Avoid at all costs. I'm returning his stupid books too. Uni won't buy them back!
He was constantly saying something realizing it didnt work and then try to figure it out before trying to explain it again. He talked down to students with questions and gave me zero on a project I posted on the class website on time because I forgot to put the link to the (public) website on blackboard. When I asked to give him the link he saidno
Worst professor at SCSU. I had this guy back in 2010 and he was the biggest racist ever. This was at the time prior to what is occurring in today's news. I did all my work and the final grade was heavily relied on the final presentation. I walked out mid-way bc he interrupted me on purpose while I was presenting. Guy is a scum bag stay away.
Why y'all got to hate on Frank? I was nervous to take his class but this man is so awesome. He tells you exactly how he wants things done, he has grace periods for due dates, and he is friendly with his students. The only thing is that he expects kids to finish work outside of class but he's mellow about it if you don't. Overall, fun man & class.
Don't take this class or this professor! Very hard grader and he doesn't explain when you have questions. Doesn't give good feedback on assignments, he critiques the way you look and speak on video presentations and takes a bunch of points off. He was always rude in the way he gave "feedback", and never had anything nice or encouraging to say.
I needed one credit to complete my degree so I selected this 100-level course to accommodate that ONE CREDIT. Unfortunately, I immediately realized that this was a mistake. He assigned 6 quizzes and 3 speeches in one week. His guidelines for grading are odd and extremely rigid. (For speeches, if someone has a tattoo, they are required to cover it!)
He is alright, but is very very strict with attendance. I am scared of getting sick this semester as it could impact my grade. He does not seem to understand that human things such as getting stuck in traffic happen.
It is funny he teaches the digital journalism/computer classes because he barely knows how to turn on a computer.
Although there are a lot of quizzes they are straightforward and go along with the book word for word. His class took a little time to get used to, but his feedback was specific and useful. I genuinely enjoyed learning and if you are willing to put in the work, follow the rubrics, and complete assignments on time you should be just fine.
Prof. Harris is a tough grader but also gives good feedback and lets you redo the assignments to get a better grade .
I highly recommend avoiding this Professor. He is a very strict grader. Even when you read the rubrics and try to follow them to a tee, he will find a way to tear apart your work. I can't tell you how many times I went back and made sure I did the assignments exactly how he asked and still received poor grades.
Professor Harris is very strict, but he can be nice. His grace periods are generous and as long as you follow the instructions you'll get a good grade. Attendance is a major deal for him - being late, even ONE MINUTE over, is considered a half absence. Those build up quick. Don't take his morning class if you can't be there on time.
it was online class, all assignments were on top of each other, also lot of presentations and lot of requirement of preparation for each presentation which take lot of time. after two month of the semester all assignment were done and final grade were up. over all very bad class and professor
Don't waste your time with this unreasonable professor, he takes himself too seriously. Obviously, being a good student is important, but he makes it unnecessarily hard to pass. It should be writing intensive, not writing impossible.
He is so nice and considerate.
Taking this class was annoying to the point i gave up and ended up failing that class. If you miss 3 days you fail the class automatically, even if you have a A+ in this class miss 3 days you fail the course. He helps you a lot also good at responding back to emails. He moves at a fast paced if you don't listen he will move on to the next thing.
Former student in 2018, just wanted to advise you guys to never take his class. Harsh grader, rude and deceptive. Very mean spirited as well.
If you pay attention to deadlines (they are frequent) and show that you care, you won't have an issue in this course. Professor Harris gives awesome feedback, allows you to revise assignments for a better grade, and wants his students to be motivated. I got so much more out of this course than just an “A”. Harris is a professor that truly cares.
May god have mercy on your soul because he will not.
I really enjoyed this class. Lots of presentations and papers but rubrics are very clear and easy to follow. As long as you pay attention to dates and follow rubrics, you can do very well in this class!
Took as elective, one of worst decisions ever, terrible professor unprofessional and makes the class as hard as possible. Thinks he's the best journalist ever when he has videos as examples looking like it was filmed 50 years ago.
VERY critical. I got points taken off because my bed was in my background (I live on campus). He makes this class hard to enjoy and I'm not one to complain or even give up but I would never take this class again. If you lack confidence don't take this class because when you feel like you did your best, it will never be good enough for him.
Makes a lot of mistakes, then brags about how he is the best. Nothing is good enough unless he makes it. Takes off up to 20 points for things he doesn't like, such as you moving too much in your chair.
Teaches a tech fluency class but barely knows how to operate a computer, uses examples of videos that look like they were made in the 1980's, harshest grader I've seen, will take points off for answers the person you interview gives and other things out of your control. Had to take him twice for my major, avoid at all costs.
I have taken tech classes before but none of them have compared to this class. The professor is impossible to work with and none of the quality work I put into the class was ever good enough for him. He will take off points for errors that were never stated in his rubrics. Not to mention his blackboard is unorganized and confusing.
This professor never grades consistently. He likes to act like his grading is crystal clear, however, it is not. He makes you do videos and group responses the day after. The due dates are very random and never consistent either. He thinks he is a good grader/professor but he truly is not. I wished I listened to the Rate My Professor ratings.
