has the highest fail rate in the university
You will learn more than you ever thought possible
A hard, or weed-out course, but great help is there if you ask
Don't miss an exam...make-ups are designed to punish. Not helpful, can be rude. He probably likes his grad students, but he stereotypes those in basic bio. I enjoyed his book (he makes you buy it) and you'll learn some interesting stuff.
The reason why everyone is saying that his class is difficult is because they are not putting enough into it. Frank is a very nice man, all you have to do is go talk to him if you need help. He will help you with what you need.
best professor I have ever had. I learned more from this class than any other class I have ever taken.
Awesome professor, take his class seriously and you will learn a lot!
Professor Farnsworth, you are the BEST!!
takes his job very seriously, though I question his knowledge of current research within the field, as well as his overall grasp of cell & molecular. Will teach you the basics very well.
I really enjoyed his honors biology class. He covers lots of interesting topics and does a great job explaining everything. He is tough on grading papers, but you'll learn a lot.

Whoever decided a 100 level class should be a weeder course needs help. First class Heppner told everyone who wanted to go onto medicine that 3/4 wouldn't make it. This guy needs to be put out to pasture, teaching style is absurd.
he was horrible! He does not teach from the text or from lab and his lectures sometimes have NOTHING to do with biology. I would not request to take this at all
Hes a real nice guy. Go to lecture, and try to take the recitation instead of the lab. While you're there write the papers, youll get a good grade. He allows u a cheat sheet with every exam (1 pg. front and back). I suggest to take the essay exam (he gives u options). Easy if you wanna try.
Funny, somewhat interesting, but not an easy A or B..definitly have to study hard
Literally the worst teacher I have ever had. This is a class for non-bio majors but he doesn't teach you anything. You are expected to learn pretty much the whole book on your own while he wastes your time in pointless lectures that have nothing to do with the class. I hate this man for bringing down my GPA
GO TO THE LECTURES! a good portion of the questions from the test are there...he uses "secret words" too...you're allowed cheat sheets for every exam, and if you fail you can re-take it (in essay form)...clearly he wants every student to succeed...class is graded on a huge curve...if you go to class you will succeed
Definitely a bit crazy...and don't fall asleep in his class because he will wake you up in the most embarrassing way he can think of at that moment.

this guy will do anything to help a student if you just ask. do go to lectures, do read the book on your own. the book teaches itself, and he teaches other stuff which is on the tests. he tells everyone this at the beginning of the year. he gives you every chance he can and really wants everyone to do well.

I had this dude back in 1990 and I still remember him. Hard class, but a great professor. Very interesting and into the material. I would certainly recommend him, but definately be prepared to work!
He was a difficult professor, though he made sure his students knew what they were doing.
good old frank-a-roo is an alright professor.. although everything he teaches isn't in the book. he throws in random questoins on his exams that he only covers in class. I didn't attend 90% of his lectures, didn't read any of the book, and pulled a B- . you can do ittttttttt too. his +10 point scale on his whole course is GOLDEN!
Loved his class. It was a ton of work (in the form of research papers) but I learned so much. This class forces you to learn time management. No tests and no final in this class. Taught me how to write a real research paper. Knows a lot. Tells great stories about all his adventures.
his tests were way too hard
Tough class, cool teacher. Try to go to all of the lectures, DON"T PROCRASTINATE! his tests are tough and cover a lot of material. don't let the 101 fool you, i thought this class was more challenging than anatomy and physiology.
Although he may be ok with lectures this guy is (quoted from him) "one of the meanest sons of ****es at this university." He's a jackass who needs a major ego bruiser. I went to see him once and he made me cry and didn't seem to care at all. He needs to realize that some of us normal people have lives outside memorizing 30 chapters for a test.
Not easy. You need to take notes, study them by yourself, and also need to read the text to get a good grade. I don't think he's helpful at all. When I went to him to ask some help, he just sent me to AEC. Not good:P
It is close to impossible to do well in this class, even having gone to every lecture and having read every chapter assigned. His lectures are sometimes interesting but also completely irrelevant to the material. I don't suggest this class if you have other hard courses, because to do well you have to devote all your time to it.
His knickname is Dr. Death. His idea of basic concepts is what students see as details and his idea of the detials is a students idea of reading and knowing exactly every little minute thing the text book is saying. He isnt very clear on anything, i would have learned more if he had taken more time to explain things and work with his students
Not helpful at all... tells us something will be on test and it wouldn't be... Very hard... It's either you get it or you dont... Quest. on exam had nuthin to do w/ Science!!!
He's very arrogant & it shows in his tests. Sometimes you can study every little thing and he will still find a way to throw you curve ball questions. He also has VERY little sympathy when you ask him for help, especially if you're asking late in the semester. Overall, I am NOT a fan. You can do well, but be prepared to eat, breathe, and LIVE bio.
very hard class. don't take it for a gen ed. you could study the whole entire textbook and you still wouldn't know all the questions on the test. he is full of himself and thinks he knows everything about everything. def. not an introductory course.
You have to work very hard in this class to do well and you have to be able to think not just remember information on his exams. He wants everyone to do well and offers secondary formats on exams so you can do which works for you best. Really helpful if you go to him towards the begining of the semester. Not an easy A but you will learn so much.
He's not that bad as a person, i didnt think he was mean, just very hard. His lectures have rarely anything to do with the text, and so you should go to the lectures. Some of the lecture notes are on the exam, but if you dont read the text, you'll do poorly. His grading is scaled and thats the only good thing about this class.
Heppner does not care about his students. His exams are impossible unless you have every word of about 12 chapters committed to memory you are screwed. If you see his name on your schedule drop that class immediately. He is overly pompous and is far too proud of his Ph.D and thinks everybody knows as much about BIO as he does.
VERY difficult class. Heppner knows his stuff, but thinks he needs to weed out those "slacker students". Exams are very difficult: You need to know all your info (from text AND lectures), and read the questions carefully. Lectures are a MUST as are reading the 2-3 chapters a week. Final was COMPREHENSIVE and tested on lots of details. Review!!
terrible teacher. expects you to learn most of the material on your own. exams are extremely difficult do not take class if he is teaching it.
Dr. Heppner is an absolutely awful professor. His exams are ridiculously difficult, and the workload is obscenely high. His lectures have nothing to do with your reading. Overall, he is an arrogant and narcissistic person that views his students as numbers and not people. If you are unlucky enough to get him as a professor, drop that class ASAP
If you listen to what he tells you to do, and spend alot of time, you will succeed very well.
Eh, this class was not so bad. I went to class a couple times only before tests. He lets you use a cheat sheet. Coursework can be overwhelming , but it really is quite simple. My advice is to read the summaries at the end of the chapter. He is a bum, but the class isn't bad. Birdman all the way.

He says he does not give exam reviews because he feels you should learn how to study what is important yourself. The day before an exam I went expecting a review and he gave the history of halloween monsters instead. I swear to GOD.
Read the book, classes have nothing to do with what he teaches. The exams are insanely difficult. I was lucky enough to be able to switch to a different BIO101 class.
tests cover too much material. does not go into all that much detail in his class lectures. get old tests from friends who took it already...some of the questions are the exact same
HE WAS HORRIBLE! HE TELLS EVERYONE THAT THEY SHOULD DROP HIS CLASS ON THE 1ST DAY AND THAT THEY SHOULD PROB RETHINK THEIR MAJOR B/C THEY WILL NOT SUCCEED IN IT.
the worst teacher of my life. he has no interest in your education. all he cares about is dressing up like a vampire and talking about birds. definitely avoid this class with this man. your life will be much better with him not in it.

he doesnt teach you, you teach yourself out of the book. on tests ther will be a couple random questions on lectures but basically his tests are 30 questions of random things throughout ten chapters. its impossible , if i could take it again i would take the essay tests instead of mutiple choice. trust me
I'm a junior who just transferred and retook 101 and you freshmen are lucky to have Dr. Heppner as your Bio prof. WELCOME TO COLLEGE KIDS! He's getting you ready for the next 4 years. You're not going to get everything spoon fed to you. Dr Heppner has a weird but good sense of humor. Talk to him outside of class, he will take an interest in you.
not as hard as everyone says. i thought i was doing bad but ended up with a b+. you get a cheat sheet on every test but don't rely on it. material is tough so study!
Lectures are important to his exams. Labs can save your grade if your doing poorly, so work hard in those.
I found him difficult but not as difficult as he seems to think he is. He spent a lot of time lecturing on difficult the class was, what we should be doing to study, etc.; I'd rather have been learning about biology, but maybe it helped some students. I didn't make use of his office hours but think he could be very helpful if you connect with him.
Easy class. People who are complaining didn't read the book, and need to take a little more personal responsibility. Cheat sheets make exams a breeze. Just remember that like every other class for the 3.5 next years you will need to think. Much easier than organic chemistry or Calc II, so if you're uncomfortable with this...get out while youcan
this class made some many people i kno hate biology. he's extremely arrogant, the world revolves around him. he IS biology, when asking for help he'll only suggest u buy his book, study more then 70 hours a week and not go into a science major.Lab WILL save your grade.Read the book, take advantage of the cheat sheets. the final will make or break you
This guy does not teach! I learned more in my highschool biology class...and I didn't have to pay for it! He doesn't tell you what to study and talks about birds and vampires. Comes into class with a motorcycle, which taught us absolutely nothing. Thank god this guy is retired.
this class is super hard but youll regret it if you dont take heppner. theres a lot of reading (which you have to do if you want to pass), and the exams are very tricky, but you will learn the stuff. plus the guy is a wicked awesome prof.
Not my favorite teacher & definitely not my favorite person but the class forces you to read and learn on your own so you actually leave the class with a strong understanding of biology. It's not fun while you're studying and even worse when you're in lecture (he's so arrogant) but overall the class is worthwhile and you'll appreciate it later
Good professor. Take this class with Wetherbee if you can. It is not a memorization class. You have to understand concepts more than anything. Tricky exams. It is possible to get an A but your grade isnt always based on effort it is based on understanding. Has fun lectures that make the class interesting. Exams are 65% lecture. Lab will save you.
Professor Heppner is a difficult teacher. He expects a lot from you especially for an intro class. Go to class - information is different than that of the book. He tests you on both. He is overall a great professor - his demanding class prepares you for more difficult subjects such as Anatomy (Bio 121)
Really good professor, willing to help if you need help. Expects students to take responsibility for their educations like the adults they are. Interesting lectures, though they don't usually coincide with the reading. Its a hard class, but it prepares you for the classes that you have to take after it.
Professor Heppner teaches well in lectures but his topics do not relate to biology at times. He is a good professor who is willing to help you if you need it. The course requires alot of studying but i recommend you attend all lectures because he takes questions from the lecture and from the book. Tests are hard.
He is a difficult professor only because his tests are hard and he deff. wants you to think into the questions. He teaches you many life lessons in his lectures and keeps them pretty interesting. It is a self teaching course that requires a lot of your time and A LOT of reading. If you stay on top of the readings then the class won't be to bad.
Dr. Heppner is a bright professor who wants to prepare his students for the real world. He tries to weed out students who are not ready for the medical field and other related areas. Although his lecture can be interesting, they are not based on the book, so READ! You must know the book inside and out unfortunately. It is a touch course.
Professor Heppner is an interesting person with a head full of knowledge. His lectures have little to do with the readings and you're expected to know everything under the sun. The class grades this semester are not bad...but it's because of CHEATING!! C+/B- here, and some idiot pays his friend 60 bucks and gets an A. How is that fair?
He spends most of the lecture defending himself as a teacher and putting down students who dont attend class regularly, also spends most lectures rambling on about information that will never be on the Exams which have questions that are nearly impossible to answer scaled so a 50 is a D and a 80 is an A but many people still fail
Heppner is really hard. I do not recommend him. Take Wetherbee if you can. Lectures are boring and pretty useless... you are better off teaching yourself. I was not happy with the class.

Okay, for the people who try to defend this time; stop wasting your breath. This guy is the worst teacher I have ever laid eyes on. He preaches that he is a Doctor and makes it seem like people should bow down to him. Terrible teacher not be paid for what he does; the TA's do every single thing for him.
I'm a notes person, always have beenm but I find if more difficult to learn just from a text book in science.None of the things we learned in class, which was very little of the reading, were on the exams. Had to teach my self the entire book basically, and failed. While entertaining, if you have his class I say...run, run away!
you have to teach yourself everything. read the book. go to class. pay attention. he teaches you the basics that you need to comprehend the book.
i love frank heppner
don't take
He's not too bad. I would recommend going to the lecture's but they're not mandatory. Be ready to teach yoruself almost everything. If you interested in BIO you'll be fine, but he's a tough teacher. If you ever need help, to see him, he's always willing to talk to students.
Dude rocks!!!!and knows his rickettsia from his staph
Switched gears in life. I earned my bachelor's in electrical engineering. Then I took Bio 101 with this guy. Probably the worst, least inspiring professor I've ever had. I strongly recommend avoiding him. TERRIBLE. And I would know, I've take a lot of classes. He is useless as a teacher and even more useless as a person.
Very knowledgeable teacher but material is so complex and there's so much you have to teach yourself from the book. Exams are very hard. Labs are pretty easy. It's not a bad idea to take his course if you're a bio major though because he prepares you for future classes you have to take. The AEC has amazing study groups. Take advantage!
not good
ok...this man is the reason why im going to graduate college late..and as well as why i switched majors. Hepner is the worst teacher ive had at the university by far..all of his exams are BS after you spend days on end studying the study guide and get a failing grade.I DO NOT RECOMMENCD taking him, take Prof. Wetherbee instead.
Heis a such a nice character and i like his class too...............
Clear but very very very hard!
He is an incredibly intelligent professor and if you can get him for an honors class, it is definitely worth it. He puts a lot of time and effort into his classes, and overall he is just a classy fellow.
He is clearly a bright professor. But he is certainly more worried about his image than helping undergrad students. Oh yes, let's ride our motorcycle into BSC auditorium and then make us read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance on the first day of Z00101. Great... I don't need enlightenment from you... Just take BIO101 if you can. Fall 1987.
