He was pretty good ... he knows what he's talking about ... tests were not too bad
Keutsch is the man, funny german sense of humor, but good informative lectures. Easy online homeworks = easy grades. Exams arent too hard.
His lectures are interesting and his tests are fair. Great professor; great guy. And hot too!
great professor, esp. since this is his 1st semester teaching...he's really excited about chem. and he makes it very easy to get points...we had all of the 109 professors teach our section for a day when he was gone and he is by far the best of the 109 professors
really good professor, kinda crazy but whatever. tough class though.
He is young, so is still excited about teaching. That helps a lot for lectures. Good prof
Professor Keutsch is my hero. He really enjoys teaching and really wants you to understand the material. There are some topics (electrochemistry and acids and bases) that he doesn't really enjoy, so he doesn't really teach them too well. If he gives oral multiple choice questions in class, the last choice is ALMOST always the right answer.
Extremely helpful. He made the lectures entertaining, and genuinely cared about students.
Exams are kind of tough but his curve is great. Very student oriented and funny.
A great guy who will come in to lab sections and talk to each student idividually about how they're doing.
Keutsch is very excited about chemistry and he likes to do fun experiments in every lecture. He has a fun accent. Sort of a hybrid German-British-American thing.
He is a very good professor. As people have said before, he loves what he does, and he teaches it just as well. The demos are fun and keep the sleepy ones awake. I enjoyed his corky humor as well as his enthusiasm. However, it is a difficult class no matter who you have. But all the other professors subbed in at least once, and they are all good.
Good Prof, but like's to derive every equation, which is not neccessary. Get's boring when he goes off on one of these stints deriving an equation, but otherwise a very good Prof
I love Keutsch's goofy personality. Half German, half Argentinian makes him pretty cool. Can sometimes get a little boring, but he loves Chemistry. Usually the book provides explanations that are as easy, if not easier, to understand. The class itself is really difficult. TAs are really helpful, too.
Don't take 109 unless you have a passion for chemistry and are willing to work your butt off through the semester. Professor is great, he is engaging and passionate about the subject matter. Demos for the class are awesome, Prof Keutsch loves blowing things up. Overall, I would definitely take Prof. Keutsch again.
Keutsch is a decent teacher. Funny and engaging, but sometimes a bit unclear. If I had to do it over, I'd take Zanni or Manhappta, but any professor you get will be fine. As long as you make sure you READ the textbook it'll help clarify a lot. A good basis in chemistry is necessary to do well without working your butt off.
Doesn't really matter who your 109 teacher is, they all pretty much teach the same stuff. But the class is crazy hard, and you might as well take 104 and not lose your 103 credit. Prof is nice, and very energetic. He does a fine job explaining, but read the book before class and you will be way less confused. Fast paced and hard, beware!
keeps the classes attention. Its quite clear that he enjoys teaching the material and seems to care about the students. Exams were hard, with the average never exceeding 70%. I snagged a B with relatively heavy studying, granted chem is my weakest science class.
Very good professor. Explained things in a detailed, yet understandble way. Keutsch was enthusiastic about what he was teaching, making the class enjoyable to go to. He was very helpful(always answered emails) and seemed very interested in helping his students succeed. I would definitely take another class with Keutch
Cool guy, and fun lecturer. Exams were somewhat tough, but ok if you study and/or have had AP Chem in HS. Online homework system can be somewhat punishing, dont expect an easy 100% on them.
Frank Keutsch is one of the 3 main Chem 109 teachers and you can't really go wrong with any of them. He explains things quite well, is interesting, funny, and seems to genuinely enjoy what he's doing. Though Chem 109 is an insanely hard class, I am glad I took it and learned a great deal. Just be prepared to work hard.
He is the man. Take class from him. You will not be disappointed. He's helpful, funny, and a great prof.
Prof Keutsch clearly loves chemistry, and his enthusiasm is contagious. That said, his style of teaching is so unorganized and haphazard that I had to resort to teaching my self all the material to pull of an A. He is entertaining, but if you want to succeed, I would choose another 109 professor.
Great guy, fun to listen to his accent, helpful, decent lecturer but not the best.
Just because he is humorous doesn't mean he is a good professor. He is severly unorganized and doesn't know how to explain things. He focuses too much on material that is not on the test and often doesn't cover material that is actually on the test. Both of the other chem 109 professors subed on occasion and I was blown away by how much I learned.
Tough if you don't have chem AP under your belt. Lectures are not very helpful. Forces you to read the book. Exams are mostly book based. Very funny and interesting character.
Beautiful hair!!!
Kept lectures interesting. Exams progressively got easier as he began explaining more of what he expected. Recommended readings and problems in the textbook; online homeworks can be VERY unforgiving though. However, Keutsch is VERY helpful and promptly responds to emails. TA's in discussion are luck of the draw - you either get a good one or not.
His class is hard, period. Whether you take it with the other professors or not, the class is hard, but he is unorganized and isn't much help when you ask him a question, but he does try his best when explaining things. It would have been more helpful if I had taken AP Chem.
Exams are based of the notes in class. It's pretty straightforward. I thought he was a very good teacher.
GREAT PROFFESSOR. keeps your attention in class with a sense of humor, explains/writes things clearly and step by step.
His lectures are really entertaining and he has the best german accent ever. He thoroughly explains everything and is really nice. He tries to get to know students in his class which is respectful. The exams are pretty hard, especially the final
Great hair and awesome German accent. Has a real enthusiasm for chemistry. Sometimes is hard to understand, but is very helpful and generous on handing back points if there is doubt. Tests are hard though. All homework is through Learn@UW, so fair grading is ensured.
Fun and entertaining professors. Makes lectures interesting. Textbook isn't necessary since tests are only on what he teaches in lecture
This is the hardest class I?ve ever taken. If you are not sure if you should take this class, take 103 and104 instead. This is a very work intensive class yet your grade comes down to tests that are near impossible to prepare for. Moore teaches to the tests while Keutsch teaches to whatever he?s thinking about that day it seems.
Awesome teacher, very enthusiastic and helpful with any questions I had
Prof Keutsch is awesome. Lectures are engaging and actually keep you interested in the material! He does lots of demos to keep things fun. Plus his accent is awesome. That being said this class is HARD. Online homework can be punishing and exams are very hard. Don't take if you aren't positive that you can handle it.
Seriously one of the coolest professors ever. Loved chem going into the class, still love it. Online homework kind of sucks, but it's only once a week. Keutsch is hilarious, loves to blow stuff up, and is great at teaching! Lots of demos almost every lecture make it exciting. Definitely my favorite class this semester.
Keutsch is a great professor he puts a lot of effort into his lectures, and really cares about his students and wants them to do well. Don't take this class if you aren't expecting a challenge (it is two semesters of gen chem in one) but it isn't too bad if you keep up with readings and go to class. Overall, I definitely recommend taking Keutsch.
He is a very interesting professor (and funny); however, he doesn't expain the material that well. This sememster had a lot of substitue teachers (like prof. Moore) and while they kind of boring they are easier to understand. Online homework is time consuming and the tests are HARD. Don't take unless you had AP Chem in high school.
I really liked him as a teacher. We did have alot of subs, and I thought Moore was easier to understand as well, although not quite as entertaining. I had AP Chem in high school and I still got a BC in this class. I would say that you need to have taken AP Chem and really understood what you learned. This class is a challenge.
I'm glad I took Chem 109 with Keutsch. The lectures are worth attending. The textbook isn't worth buying, let alone the solutions manual. One recommendation, we made a study group on Thursdays to do the online homework and do pre-lab activities. IMO, it was the biggest factor in my success. Sometimes he would miss lecture because of research.
Prof. Keutsch is always engaging and extremely excited about what he's teaching. Sometimes lectures moved a bit too quickly, but overall were well-paced given the large scope of the course. Homework and weekly quizzes are online and worth doing in groups. Exams are formatted such that you can pick and choose different problems. Textbook optional.
Great professor, just be ready to work.
If you have prof. Keutsch as one of the instructors of the Chem course you are going to take, choose him. You won't be disappointed. Helpful, clear, and humorous.
Yikes. I didn't take AP Chem in highschool, and thus this class was a big challenge. No review, fast lectures, and a lot of new material. Frank is from Germany, so hopefully you're good at understanding accents! He's nice, fairly humorous. Difficult midterms! He is also gone a lot for his own research, which can be frustrating.
I took 109 with Keutsch. He taught pretty fast, but that's the pace of the class. He keeps lectures entertaining (relative to how boring chem can be), and overall, he's a pretty good professor.
Class is difficult if you do not have a good working knowledge of chemistry already. Keutsch is helpful if approached and his lectures are somewhat informative but definitely entertaining. TA notes are put up after lecture so pretty easily skippable, but why would you want to? He has awesome hair, a cool accent, and interesting perspectives.
He is a brilliant chemist, and a great teacher, kept me awake in lectures. If you have a choice for chemistry professors, definitely choose Keutsch.
Keutsch is a great teacher. He is interested in helping students learn the difficult material. He provides a ton of tools for students and even though he is from Germany, he is not hard to understand at all.
Probably the best option for 109, his class consistently outscored the other section on exams. Course essentially comes down to putting the right amount of time in and getting a decent TA.
Love Prof.Keutsch. His lecture is interesting and u won't fall asleep. He has a awesome German accent :) But I feel it is kind of intimidating to talk to him personally. Overall, he is great at teaching but sometimes the exams are hard. Recommend!!!
Very enthusiastic about teaching and wants very much to be helpful. He was easy to talk to during office hours and was happy to meet. Chemistry isn't my main area and I enjoyed his course and learned a lot at the same time. Highly recommended.
Keutsch is probably the best chem teacher I've ever had. He's passionate about what he teaches, and does fun and actually helpful demos. He genuinely cares about how his students are doing, even in a large class size, he clearly makes an effort to reach out to students.
Prof Keutsch was great. He always kept lectures interesting & he genuinely cared about the success of his students and was always willing to answer questions. Exams are really hard but they are formatted so that you get to pick which questions to answer. He moves quickly so I would only recommend him if you took AP Chem and understood the material.
Just take him if you have a chance, nuff' said
Keutsch is very funny and although the lectures at the beginning of semester can be boring because they're review, you can still enjoy it with his humor. He gives hard tests and but also listens to feedback from students and tries to make the class better. He also has an awesome accent!
Dont think "I took ap chem, I'm good." Friend with this attitude is failing. Practice tests like the exams and are class based. Do the reading anyways. Keutsch is a phenomenal teacher. He wants you to do well, and it is possible to do so. Will not stand for any BS. Labs are the hardest part for me. Gets into a little ochem, but its not too bad.
Keutsch is pretty good. He needs to slow down and relax sometimes, but he's too passionate about what he's talking about to ease up. He is kinda funny and extremely smart. If you took AP Chem in high school and did well (4 or 5 on AP test), then pretty much all the material is review. His tests are pretty difficult but very fair.
Keutsch is really great. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students. His lectures are interesting because he cracks jokes and does demos. At times, lecture can be a little confusing. Tests are hard and graded kinda strictly but the format is nice because you can pick which problems to complete. I'd only take if you've had chem before.
Keutsch, although he has a german accent, was very easy to understand and taught very well in lecture. The class itself was decently tough because it is two semesters of chem packed into just one. The textbook isn't really necessary but the online one is, it has all the homework
Professor Keutsch is a pretty good professor. Most of the time he is easy to understand but his test are pretty hard. The practice tests help a lot.
Has amazing hair. If you pay attention, ask questions, and do the readings you'll score pretty well on exams. Exams are fair and pretty straight forward with a general average of 75% and all are curved. He is very clear in lecture and extremely helpful. He'll keep you interested and you'll do fine as long as you stay on top of your work!
Chem 109 is a deceivingly hard class. Do your reading, go to lecture( pay close attention) and work hard in lab, and the class is a manageable A. Simply knowing AP Chemistry will not get you by in this class.
Hard to understand and doesn't explain concepts, only introduces them. Makes it very hard on the students.
This class was my most demanding. Lectures are very heavy and A LOT of material is covered at a very fast pace, so if you don't go, good luck. Keutsch does a nice job of keeping your attention. Course description recommends "at least one year of high school chemistry," but I would say more is necessary to do well.
Great lectures, genuinely cares about your success. A lot of work, but you'll gain a ton of knowledge from his class.
Chem 109 is difficult, but it is certainly possible to earn an A. Even if you have a solid chemistry background (1+ year of HS chem), a variety of new concepts are introduced, and you are expected to apply your knowledge in solving more complex questions. His exams require you to answer 6 questions (2 basic, 3 competency, and 1 mastery).
Professor Keutsch was great! He is very passionate about chemistry and wants his students to be successful. 109 is tough, but he is very clear with his expectations.
It's hard but if you figure out how to study early its not too bad. Textbook isn't required as far as assigned readings but its helpful.
Keutsch is a boss. He isn't the greatest professor but he's a funny dude. He can be all over the place in lecture so I often found myself confused, but that doesn't really seem to affect my grade. Tests are tough, be sure to study. The practice exams he gives will be your key to survival. I will likely get an A or AB.
Great personality and definitely makes lecture interesting. He only puts material covered in lecture on the tests, even if he only briefly mentioned it though. Definitely helpful if you ask for help, he answers questions by email at any time of the day (most of the time). Also, his accent is awesome.
Best you would ever have
Professor Keutsch was pretty great. Lectures were great. They had enough humor and interesting demos to be fun. The class took a lot of work and it required working with others to get a god grasp of the material.
He is a very good professor and he conveys the material without being too boring but the class is tough. Anyone who takes Chem 109 knows it will be. You will feel like you are learning too quickly but you will feel accomplished once it is done.
The class itself is very hard and fast paced, that being said Prof Keutsch is a great teacher of the material. A lot of reading of the book and learning on your own is required but Keutschs lectures are fun, funny and very helpful. The homework is online and very easy and the labs arent bad
AP chemistry is an important prerequisite to this class, and it definitely helped me. Labs are for the most part easy but boring, lectures can be fun when he makes jokes. The exams are generally on the tough side, but they are doable. Decent curve on the class.
Chem 109 is definitely a tough class. Only recommend if you've taken AP Chemistry. I never used the testbook and I suggest you just buy the OWL access code to save money. All of the content on the midterms and final is from class lectures. YOU MUST GO TO LECTURE TO PASS! Prof. Keutsch gives good lectures and really knows what he's talking about.
I took AP chemistry in high school and found it to be incredibly boring. Keutsch helped me to find interest in it this semester with Chem 109. His lectures are exciting and he genuinely cares about his students, especially if you put in the effort.
Keutsch is a great guy and makes lectures very interesting. Several test questions come from lecture material, and you have no way of getting those questions right without going to lecture, so pay attention and you'll do fine.
Professor Deutsch has been my favorite professor from college so far. Although his course was not easy, there was no reason anyone couldn't do well if they put in the time with the given resources.
Chemistry is never an easy subject but Keutsch made it amazing! His lectures were always interesting and the only thing that I would complain about would be that he would leave occasionally for conferences. he has a slight German accent but you get used to it. Its a hard class but if you put in the time you see results.
Professor Keutsch is a great teacher. He is very enthusiastic and keeps his students interested. He does a pretty decent job of explain some of the tougher concepts also. However, this is a tough class. Definitely need a chem background. The labs are every week. I would definitely take a chemistry class with Keutsch again if I had the chance.
He was a great professor but the class is hard. If you haven't taken AP, I wouldn't recommend but as far as professors go I loved him.
Amazing lecturer. Demos are a blast.
