Amazing professor! Crystal clear powerpoints (which he provides on Smartsite along with podcasts) and he is helpful during office hours. A lot of memorization but he gives you all the information well beforehand.
He is a total powerpoint teacher, so print them and take notes on them. Charts and graph are important, pay attention to time lines. Great professor, he is doing great research super interesting.
He is somewhat overrated but he is definitely one of the better professor at UC Davis. Dislike his grading scale- each question on our exams were equivalent to one percent of our grade. Nice guy and i agree that his researches are quite interesting .
don't be fooled. i thought this class would be my easy A, but got a B-. LOTS of memorization, lots of statistics, numbers, etc. mult. choice exams out of 30, so you miss >3 points on each exam, you automatically get a B. so much info and facts on power point it is impossible to memorize everything and all the numbers. very nice/funny guy though.
Awesome professor ! Awesome class !
One of the best ANS professors on campus. Take him !!!
One of the best professors on campus !
Such an interesting guy. His class isn't as easy as I thought but he is a cool person. Plus his accent is awesome!
2 midterms, 1 final. Easy if you pay attention during every lecture. Exams can be detailed, but he points out the details he wants you to know during lectures. So know them :) Cool dude, very passionate about his work and research.
Mitloehner is super nice and he really cares about making sure that the students learn. He also tries to make his lectures entertaining. However, every single question in the class counts as a percent of your grade, so it is very easy to get a bad grade by only missing a few points on everything.
HE IS AWESOME! Coolest professor ever and a hotshot in the AnimalSci world. Class was always interesting, and he really cares about every student. Tests were simple and clear. The lab is really hands-on. Overall one of the best professors I've ever had. Only tricky part is that each point is 1% of your grade. So you have to stay on top of things.
He is an excellent professor. He has accomplished a lot, and I enjoyed hearing about his research and the real world applications of this class.
One of the best professors I have had. Its just important to review the previous lecture in order to do well on the clicker quizzes.
He is a great professor veryunderstanding if you get sick or made a mistake in class he is always willing to help out a student and is finny in class. very enjoyable
Awesome! :)
Love this professor! It's clear he has a huge passion for what he does, and he wants his students to pass. Lectures are mandatory for clicker quizzes, which you can study for by reviewing previous lectures. Podcasts are helpful for relearning details you may have accidentally missed. The midterm isn't too bad - he hints what material to know.
Really awesome teacher, he's a smart and well-traveled guy with a lot of stories! Get to know him!
He makes the lectures engaging and often brings in real life topics. He really knows his stuff and I love that he comes out to lab with us. He is easy to approach and is secretly really funny. As long as you pay attention in class you can get a B no problem and if you put some effort in you will get an A.
Awesome Professor. It is easy to get a good grade, but also easy to have it drop quickly. Each clicker quiz question is worth 1% of your grade and same goes for midterm and final questions. The overall material is easy to understand, but be sure to not brush it off, meaning make sure you at least review your notes before lecture.
Professor Mitloehner is absolutely the best instructor at UC Davis. He made class worth going to, he is very knowledgeable about Animal Science as well as Environmental Science. ANS41 is already an easy class, as long as you pay attention and go to class. He is very personable and is good at his job. I wish he taught other courses! TAKE THIS CLASS
Dr Mitloehner is a great professor. He is very knowledgeable and captivating. His passion for his work transcends in to the topics he teaches and this makes the students more interested. I loved going to this class and wish he would teach more classes. His contemporary issues lectures were very informative and interesting. Definitely recommend him!
He is an AMAZING professor! He actually wants to teach and help you. He is really passionate about the subject, and found ways to tie in his research to make the class interesting. He is really funny, and probably the most approachable professor there is. I just want him to be my best friend!! Take this class even if you aren't an ANS major.
Most fun class I've taken at Davis. I'm not even an animal science major and I absolutely loved this class. I wish he would teach other classes, I really want to learn more about contemporary issues in the agricultural arena. My favorite professor at Davis! Be prepared for a lot of fair clicker quizzes.
I absolutely loved this class. Very knowledgeable and inspirational professor. I really wish he taught more classes at Davis. I would love to know more about contemporary issues in the agricultural arena. I'm not even an animal science major and I would take every single class he teaches because he's that amazing of a professor.
Loved this class! He is such an awesome professor! Made concepts super simple, always kept me engaged in class, and never asks anything too complicated on tests. He is one of my favorite professors. Definitely would take again and recommend to anyone.
One of my favorite professors ever. Some of his lectures really opened my eyes about some issues. He goes beyond just animal science criteria and talks about how agriculture in general affects society worldwide. Very inspirational, he is very passionate about what he does. Would love to take other classes with him.
Dr. Mitloehner is by far the best professor I have ever had. His passion for the subject shows in his lectures. He is very approachable and helpful. He does not only talk about animal production, but how ag impacts the environment. His class helped me decide what path I want to take in my career. I wish he taught more classes.
Loved him. His lectures are well organized and he is really interesting. If you show up to every class take good notes the worst you can do is a B. BTW, we only had one midterm and in class clicker questions are worth the same as the midterm.
He is an awesome teacher who really knows the material and keeps you engaged. I loved the class so much I would take it again in a heartbeat!
He is a wonderful professor who is clearly passionate about the Animal Science field. His lecture were very clear and well put together. He has clicker quizzes each class that collectively are worth a midterm grade, but they are doable His lectures were interesting and kept my attention. He is one of my favorite professors at Davis.
This class was very interesting, even if I didn't have much of an interest in management of livestock to start with. He is very passionate about what he teaches and links subjects in class to real-world problems. Some lectures dealt with contemporary issues such as climate change and ethics, which was cool (it wasn't all just abstract information)
I really enjoyed this class. I learned a lot of information on how production works and especially enjoyed the contemporary issues lectures. Attendance is mandatory as there are clicker questions each class. The clicker questions and tests were very fair which was really nice.
Professor Mitloehner is an incredible professor. He is very enthusiastic about his subject and he brings life and joy to all of his lectures. He is very willing to stop for questions. I anticipated going to every lecture because Professor Mitlohner made them interesting and fun to listen to. It was a pleasure to be in one of his classes.
Dr. Mitloehner is the absolute best! Not only does he care about the subjects he is lecturing about, but he is genuinely concerned with involving his students in the process of creating a more sustainable and better informed nation for the future. Dr. Mitloehner jam packs his lectures with useful and interesting material. I would HIGHLY recommend!
Frank was a great professor! Read the lecture slides before the midterm and final. Clicker quizzes each lecture count as 30% of your grade and you get half of that just for participating. Would definitely recommend.
This class was filled with interesting information, but you definitely can't miss class. EVER. It opened my eyes to other careers that I can have with my ANS degree. Be prepared to work hard.
Amazing man! He is very passionate and one of the most interesting people I have ever met. MUST attend lectures, write down what he SAYS not what's on the slides. Study slides and notes easy A. Don't skip class, you need to hear what he says. Gives extra credit easy grading. SUPER FUNNY, I laughed almost every lecture.
The midterm was not very difficult. If you have taken ANS 1 and 2 this class is an easy A. Still learned something and lecture was really interesting. Id recommend this class.
One midterm, one final, and clickers are only grades: every question you get wrong is equal to 1% of your grade. However, this class is ridiculously easy if you've taken ANS 1&2. If you know anything about livestock you'll get an A. Talks about himself and his research too much though: this isn't an environmental class, it's livestock production.
Dr. Mitloehner is truly a gem. He is very friendly in office hours if you have questions, or even if you just want to talk about animal science in general. His research is very inspiring too. TAKE HIM his class (41) is very interesting to non animal science majors too
He is honestly the best animals science professor I've had by far. He is willing to clear up and answer an questions you may have. He has a German accent but it adds to his charisma. He does clicker quizzes which are easy if you paid attention during lecture. Midterm and final easy if you study for them. I would honestly retake his class.
Dr. Mitloehner is a great professor. His class is really easy because his biggest interest is teaching you things that are actually important so don't expect to need to know super specific stuff. Class was very interesting and her German accent makes things even better. He's also a really nice guy so don't be afraid to talk to him.
Dr. Mitloehner is fantastic! You're graded on clicker quizzes, 1 midterm, and a final. If you pay attention during lecture and review notes everything is very easy. Lectures are very interesting and he does a great job making the material applicable outside of the classroom. 11/10 would recommend
Favorite class at Davis so far. Awesome professor
1 midterm, 30 clicker questions, and a final. He is very passionate about the class and makes an 8am fun. You would not regret taking his class. He is by far and best ANS professor I have ever encountered. Also, he does mythbusters every class and they are very interesting.
Very nice professor. Super interesting and well respected. Class has good content but structure can be frustrating. Each clicker question worth .5% of grade, each test question worth 1% of grade. Be sure you know all the details or you'll miss silly points. A lot of studying needed for an A but doable. Lots of work for 2 units. Would take him again
Sometime in the end of my freshman year, I began to regret coming to Davis. Taking this class reminded me WHY I chose Davis over UC Berkeley. UC Davis wouldn't be Davis without Mitloehner and ANS41. I wish everyone could take this course, even my parents and non-animal science friends. Much of the world is misinformed and this course will open eyes
Best professor EVER! He's passionate about what he teaches & cares for his students. As a non-animal science major I loved his class. He made having an 8am lecture enjoyable. Unfortunately he only teaches one class, I wish he taught more. The course material was a bit difficult because I didn't take ANS 1 or 2 but if you study its manageable.
Professor Mitloehner is one of the most impressive men I have ever met. He is an amazing researcher and his research is fascinating. His class is not easy and requires a lot of memorization, but if you take the time to go to office hours, Mitloehner really wants to make sure the topics are clear and understood. He is an extremely fair professor.
One of the best professors I've ever had at Davis. He genuinely cares about the students and their needs. He has A LOT of extra credit, 2 midterms, and one final. One of our midterms was just clicker questions about the previous lectures, so make sure you go to class and review your notes from the past lecture. Focus on the environmental lectures!
The struggle of waking up at 8am to get to his lecture is made up for how amazing and passionately he delivers each of them. Mitloehner truly cares about what he teaches and making sure he's communicating well with his students. His lectures will engage most of the braindead people who make it to his class. 10/10 Quality professor.
I did not miss a single 8am lecture because he was such a great teacher/lecturer. Clicker questions in class are combined to make up "the second midterm". Only one scantron midterm. No papers. 1 final. Definitely an easy A class and Mitloehner is an amazing human being who makes getting up that early worth it. 11/10 recommend.
Amazing teacher. He really cares about his students and strives to do what is better for them. His lectures are really entertaining and educational. His class is relatively easy, do not miss a day as there are clicker questions that count as midterm questions and if you miss them, you lower your grade. The midterm is super easy, no essays.
Hands down the best professor UC Davis could have. Not only is he straight forward with his criteria and tests your knowledge on things that are applicable to the real world but the research and evidence he uses (from his OWN personal experience) is incredible. Made 8 ams SUPER easy to look forward to.
Dr. Mitloehner is awesome! He truly cares about his subject and teaching it well. He emphasizes retaining the material, not just memorizing things we would forget right after exams. Attendance pointsa third of your grade. I messed up on this by not getting to some of the classes (at 8am), otherwise Id have an A. I appreciate Dr. M!
VERY fun class, was never bored during lecture not necessarily an easy A you may forget some numbers and lose points in the clicker quizzes/mt/final. He hosts review sessions so he gives students so many resources as possible and I love his mythbusters. I found myself telling friends about his mythbusters since I found them so interesting.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He really cares about his students which is so rare at Davis. His class is really fun, my favorite part was the "mythbusters" at the beginning of every lecture. This class is a lot of memorization like other Animal Science courses. But his lectures are very straightforward and interesting.
Great professor! Repetition of ANS1 & ANS2 so easy class over all.
A real diamond that shines above all other professors at Davis. TRULY cares for his students. Straightforward, genuine, personable guy. You would want someone like him as your best friend. Grades fair and give ample opportunities to succeed. He is extremely dedicated to his job and students. Would HIGHLY recommend taking any class of his.
INCREDIBLE professor. Genuinely cares about students understanding the material and is very passionate about what he teaches. Incredibly interesting and relevant class.
easy class, but he adds political nonsense about different props that affect animals. I didn't sign up to listen to a man rant about politics for an hour. Alot of propaganda on why the farm industry has "LITTLE PART" in greenhouse gases. I didn't care for it & nobody questioned it, it felt like an environment that didn't allow for other opinions.
Professor Mitloehner was the best professor I've had so far! If you get the chance to take his class you definitely should. He's very nice and loves what he does. Going to the 8am class was enjoyable.
He is the best professor I even met in college. Lots of extra credit, easy test, good lecture and no homework.
Professor Mitloeher is the best professor I ever met. He really cares about his students. ANS 41 course is only graded by exams which are not that difficult. I am willing to take any courses by him.
He is such a great professor and you know he loves what he does. Due to online classes, you get 2 midterms and a final. There is no curve but the quizzes are so straightforward. If you take good notes then you are all good. You are proctored during the tests. You will have no trouble passing the class because he is such a good teacher.
Professor Mitloehner provides you with a very thorough and clear understanding on the topics presented, he also has some very insightful experience and success in his field.
Dr. Mitloehner is extremely respected in his field and it's easy to see why. He's very knowledgable about the topics he discusses and is genuinely hilarious. You could tell he loved interacting with students and answering questions, and I'm sad I didn't get to meet him in person. The class is pure memorization and pretty easy if you've taken ANS001
He's one of the best professors here at UC Davis, although I found myself struggling because I was taking ANS 1 while taking 41, I did not have the knowledge that everyone else had but it was a really enjoyable class.
Great professor! Hands down one of my favorite classes I took. His class is graded on two midterms and a final so make sure you attend every lecture.
This class was definitely harder in the online format because participation points were removed and your grade was literally the midterms and the final. He asks really specific questions that just you either know or you don't. All in all still one of the easier classes.
2 midterms & 1 final (30%, 30%, 40%). Make sure you come to lecture. Slides and audio are posted, but no video. Questions can be very specific so make sure you know everything as the midterms & final are your only chances to get the grade you want. Hes a great lecturer and very funny. May make vegans a bit uncomfortable. Overall would take again.
You really have to pay attention to both the lecture slides and the facts he says in order to do well on the exams. The only points in the class are from 2 midterms and a final, but if you like getting a deeper understanding of animal science and fun life stories, Dr. M is great!
Great lecturer! Made everything super clear and made sure to tell us what was important for tests. If you go to lecture & take good notes, midterms & final are a breeze. Also loved him for 41L, labs are absolutely amazing. Can't go wrong with him!!
I know a lot of people were upset with Mitloehner this quarter, but he isn't awful. ANS 41 is a refresher of ANS 1 and 2. Only graded by in class pop quizzes, 1 midterm and a final. Questions aren't difficult but are very specific. Go to lecture and study a quizlet and it's an easy A. Worth noting he does not like vegans. Make of that what you will
Lecture was an easy A if you showed up, payed attention, took notes, and reviewed them. The grade breakdown was 30 points from inclass graded clicker questions (based on the previous lecture's material), 30 points from a midterm, and 40 points from a final so overall only 100 points in the class (with 2 extra credit points possible from each exam).
Professor Mitloehner is the best. He tells a lot of interesting stories and explains his lecture slides really well. He conducts random clicker quizzes that can only be taken in class, therefore attendance is required to pass. I was a couple points shy of an A-, and he was quite generous in awarding me that grade! Don't hesitate to approach him!
Clicker quizzes almost every class but they are super easy. If you show up to lecture you'll be fine. One midterm and one final. No homework.
Mitloehner has required attendance which can be rough, but the class is easy and he is a fun professor. 8am is hard, but its honestly not bad and Mitloehner is aware everyone is tired. Would take again. He also teaches lab and makes an effort to speak to students -- very nice professor.
Mitloehner is a nice guy, he doesn't make his midterm questions too crazy considering all of the info you have to learn in his class, but there's a lot of memorizing you have to do so try not to cram. Watch out for the iclicker questions every lecture, they are graded and weigh a lot. Attendance IS mandatory if you care about your grade.
Great lecturer. He is very passionate about his field of study and makes it very clear through his teaching. Lots of information but makes it digestible. Attendance is mandatory but his lectures made the 8am worth it. Had an A before I bombed the final (my own fault for not studying) and he rounded my grade up to keep my A without me asking.
Mitloehner is THE BEST! Class & exams are easy, just go to class, pay attention, and take extra notes on what hes saying. Iclicker questions so mandatory attendance but his engaging lectures kept me awake during this 8am. My roommate and i love this guy and still talk about him and his class all the time. Learned so much & class was low maintenance
Mitloehner was funny, kind, and a good test giver. All the tests were easy A's if you study the material. Attendance in 8am lecture was rough sometimes because he does geo tagged iclicker quizzes but at the end of the day it did get me up early so it wasn't too bad. Answered questions, made jokes, and overall created a great atmosphere. Nice guy!
Class is just lecture at 8 am 2x a week and the slides/ info are straight forward. After he's done with the slide presentation there's a quiz. The lectures are only audio recorded and there's no homework so just focus on studying the material that was presented in lecture. Straight forward class not too difficult and he's pretty funny.
His iClicker quizzes are so easy (35% of your grade), but his tests are so confusing. I swear he throws random things we haven't learned into his tests. His tests are half simple questions, half curveball questions. His lectures are fun and easy, but his tests are scary to non-FFA kids.
Great professor, he clearly cares about his students and wants everybody to do well in the class. “Pop” quizzes every other lecture or so but he makes it clear what will be asked on the quizzes as well as the midterm and final :)
If you struggle with early classes, be careful—missing just two quizzes dropped my grade from 100 to 95. The content and professor are great, but the grading is unbelievable and the participation requirement is too harsh for what I signed up for a 2-unit course. Don't be late or skip, or your grade will suffer.
He's very passionate and his exams are very straight forward!
Fine lecturer, frustrating person. Constant opinionated rants, propaganda, misinformation, comments on women's bodies. Told us multiple times we have to google info that would be on the midterm. Mandatory 8am iClicker attendance, but he constantly skipped and made TAs/guests "teach". Content wasn't hard, but tests were confusing/poorly written.
Good lecturer, engaging for a 8am class. Only grader by three things one midterm, the final, and Iclickers in every lecture. If you go to class its easy. Test are straight forward
The lack of stuff going into grading made me anxious but honestly js pick the longest answers for the iClicker and usually they'd be right. Tests were sometimes hard sometimes easy but again getting one question wrong can bring your grade down a lot. He was lowkey rarely there for lectures.
