Very funny, relaxed, and a cool guy, but as a teacher he does not deliver. Class is mainly viewing slides that has way too much irrelevant information. He is very unclear with his explanations. I leave class often more confused than when I entered. But tests are a breeze and as long as you are in class and teach yourself outside class you'll pass.
Don't need to show up to each class, however he does give quizzes in classes sometimes and cannot be made up. Some what unclear on few homework assignments you do receive.
Professor Frank Ortega is by far the best Professor I've had! I really enjoyed his class, learned a lot about sociology, and had an overall great experience. He is very funny and has amazing lectures. There's never any homework and the tests are very passable. I highly suggest anyone to take his class!
We take notes almost every day and have a group discussion while this happens, so people who are comfortable contributing to the discussion and offering their own experiences will thrive in this class, and if you don't want to talk, the presentations each class session are pretty clear and it never feels like anything is unexplained or cut short.
Great teacher. Lectures & note taking everyday. Easy grader as long as you contribute.
Mr Ortega is awesome, so clear in what he wants from you. Never gives any homework and only write one paper. Very understanding that you have a life outside of school. Gives a ton of extra credit. Definitely recommend taking his class
The entire class consists of looking at slides that contain too much information to get anything to stick. He is incredibly unclear when it comes to homework assignments. Due to the lack of assignments to determine your grade, you pretty much have to do well on everything in order to pass the class. Would not recommend.
Ortega is a really great guy. Hes super understanding and respects all of his students. He pretty much lectures as you take notes all of class. Nothing too exciting but not boring either. Only complaint is that almost all of the work we were assigned came at the end of the semester. I felt a little over worked but overall it's a chill class
Frank ortega is so great!!! he is super nice and fun and i enjoyed his class. 6 essays and a interview paper. no final. He's sooo understanding and lenient but you learn a lot and makes you think outside the box. Not a hard class at all and I would so take him again!
He is seriously so amazing! So much extra credit and sometimes just showing up gets you extra credit. I got a 113% hes a great teacher.
Professor Ortega is so awesome and funny. He makes his class alive and made sure his students understand what he's saying. He is very considerate and understanding. Best professor eveeeeeer! Take his class and you will have a good semester!
3 hr lecture. 1x/wk (Fridays). Intro to Sociology. Pros: Good content, teacher is super cool and relatable. Not too much note-taking, easy reading. Better friend than a teacher. Cons: Heavy lecture and participation/discussion. Connections between concepts during lectures are not clear. He seems a little lost/unorganized most of the time.
Ortega is great and truly cares about his students. You can really act like yourself around him and speak your mind. The essay topics are more traditional, with topics about native americans and capitalism. He is really lenient with essay dates, which i personally don't like b/c i always turn my stuff in on time when others don't have to. Take him!
Ortega is a GREAT professor. He is so accommodating to students and is really understanding. Lectures are really interesting, but if students don't participate they will get boring and he will make you write. A few quizzes, but as long as you keep up with the reading and demonstrate understanding you will get full credit.
Professor Ortega cares about his students. His lectures are interesting, and he has a great sense of humor. Participation in class discussions are encouraged. I really admire his dedication to teaching. He has an open door policy, and is willing to help any student, if they are willing to help themselves. Socio. 120 & 122. I enjoyed both classes.
Great teacher of sociology. All of the students seem to appreciate his sense of humor. He makes this class very do-able and relatable. Attendance is not mandatory, although you will miss out on participation points occasionally. There are not many assignments. I thought this class was a breeze. Take Frank Ortega, you won't regret it.
funniest and best professor you can for at a JC. class wasn't always mandatory but i wanted to be there bc Frank is hilarious and makes you really interested in sociology. if you have the opportunity to take him, dont pass it up.
A class where you leave feeling a bit more intelligent than you did when you arrived. Great class discussions led by an enthusiastic, funny, and most importantly REAL professor who understands the complexities of student lives in and out of school. He expects you to participate, so come to class prepared to think. Highly recommended.
Ortega's a funny guy, and the class is pretty easy and straightforward. Would definitely recommend if you're looking to get some general ed out of the way and gain more insight in the course!
I took Prof Ortega my second to last semester at community college before I transferred and he was such a good professor. He made the class understandable and relatable to society currently. He cares about his students and is willing to work with them when they need help or time to work on something. His textbook was free which was nice .
Very fun professor, took him for Socio-120 as well. The one problem I had was that he based almost your entire grade off of 6 papers, but a very easy class in every other way and a cool professor.
Accomodating professor, passionate about his lectures. Helps out a lot, sympathetic with great teaching skills. Wrote six papers for the entire class, if you don't like writing, do not take 122. If you like writing and want an easy A, take 122 with him. He helps a lot and makes sense to people who do not understand material.
Super charismatic and interesting. Just make sure to show up.
Prof Ortega is an amazing guy. Hilarious dude. He tries to use lingos & jokes in class to keep it engaging. Prof. Ortega is so understanding that our schedules are hard so he rarely assigns HW. Quizzes here & there but they are w/ partners or take home. Hella extra credit. I have a 107% right now. Sociable outside class :) Easy A class.
Professor Ortega is awesome, he is very comprehensive of your schedule and tries to not make the lectures boring, they are a little heavy on notes but times fly by, because of his classes i became a Socio major! took socio 120 and 121
This is a very writing intensive class. It is very easy to get an A or B if you complete the assignment but some are very tedious and demanding. I wouldn't recommend him.
Professor Ortega is great ! He makes class enjoyable and fun. He's super chill and will let you turn in late work, gives extra credit, and will do anything to help you pass his class. Its an easy A, but he doesn't have much assignments and takes forever to grade them. For tests he lets you work with a partner.
Ortega is pretty chill. As long as you somewhat participate in class and read the articles he gives, you'll be fine. There is a paper due about every 3-ish weeks and he is VERY flexible with the due dates which is very helpful. I think the topics discussed in class had everyone thinking so it made it a very insiteful, cool class!
Professor Ortega was great. I loved his class. He is really passionate about what he does. This is an easy A class as long as you show up and try you will get an A. Would defiantly take again.
He is hella chill
Super easy class. I took it online while also taking calc, chem, and bio and I was still able to get an A. It did not take up much of my time during the semester. I would recommend it if you need to get a GE out of the way. Ortega is very nice and accessible over email. He goes out of his way to make sure everyone succeeds.
Prof is chill, but this class was challenging. Take his warning seriously that this class requires WORK. If you aren't a decent writer, this class won't teach you how to write. You're mostly expected to just perform, but prof is available & willing to help, just ask. More work outside of class than in, lots of videos & lectures + class discussions.
I took him over the summer and honestly, I think it may have been my easiest class so far. He grades based on how you understand the topic and if you did it. As long as you show that you know what youre doing, this should be an easy A for you as well. He also drops your lowest scores on quizzes and homework assignments at the end of the semester.
Highly rated Professor. Awesome teacher and an awesome person. 10/10 You won't regret taking his class
I took this class online over the summer and it was super easy. Easy A and he's super nice and smart. Definitely take this class.
Hes great just take him and youll love the lectures.
Many notes to take! The final exam is extremely hard and wasting your time! I wrote 6000 words,20pages and spent 20 hours on my final exam!
I find this a very writing intensive course. He has high expectation that you would write lots of high quality papers. It easy for me to get a B on them but rarely any A in my experience. This feels more like a 4-5 unit course.
I don't think his lecture prepared me well for the test. Sometime lectures can be confusing and unclear. He has high expectation but that also means you have to do most of the learning on your own.
Really interesting professor and talks a lot about his personal life story. There is a quiz after every unit, a midterm and a final. Exams/quizzes are usually not difficult but he takes for. ever. to grade your work. There are also several in class personal response prompt questions to turn in. Overall pretty minimal.
Great and funny! He doesnt grade anything til the last two weeks so you wont know your grade until its too late. Hes fun to listen to and relatable.
Great professor!
This guy is great, super funny. No homework, just tests after a chapter is done. Book is online so you don't have to buy anything. Lenient on attendance, but does give out assignments to do in class. Two projects, but they aren't that bad. Laugh at his jokes and you'll do well.
Frank was a funny, nice, and unique teacher. I was lucky to be in the class I was in because we always got into fun, deep discussions that actually applied to our lives, even if it was off topic. Some assignments aren't as organized, but if you do what is assigned you should get a good grade. The tests can be a little difficult, but he helps.
amazing lectures, made the information very interesting. Would recommend going to class because he explains slides in much more depth than what he posts at the end of the unit. overall very interesting class and would recommend
He's a nice guy, hot, very engaged and passionate in the field of Sociology. But he is not good with responding to students messages and ignores you when you ask for a grade adjustment for a project. Its almost the end of this semester, and I have not hear a peep from him since April 14th.I feel CHEATED and am upset I wasted time on this man.
This online class was incredibly easy and interesting. The course consisted of weekly assignments like a 2-page film analysis, 5 question quizzes, and discussion posts. No midterm or final, and only a final paper that's 4-5 pages long. Literally just do the work and you'll be set for an A! 10/10 would recommend any of his classes.
He is a very good professor, his teaching style allows you to relate and stay engaged in the class. He creates a friendly classroom setting and teaches with confidence. He doesn't assign homework, mostly classwork, and the big points from the exams.
I just completed Intro to Social Problems online summer class. The class was designed around our everyday problems in society, including, poverty, generational wealth, and BLM. The textbook was free, and we used an online version. It wasn't a ton of reading, but you will be writing 1-2 page papers. Wasn't difficult, and he is a great instructor.
I would not take a class taught by Frank Ortega. Professor Ortega is extremely absent in his own class. He literally has posted three assignments the whole semester and doesnt even check his email. Ive sent him over 5 emails this semester and only got 1 response. He legit does not care about his students or their success. Leaves you to struggle.
I took professor Ortega's class just to gain credits. I had a few friends tell me that if you just need a class to get an easy A and gain credits this is the class to take and they weren't wrong. The semester is almost over and we've only had 3 assignments. All assignments are super easy and you don't need to watch his recorded lectures to do HW.
I would not recommend taking Ortega online. He was totally absent and does not respond to emails. He doesn't follow his syllabus or class policies. We've only had 3 assignments for the semester and there is no wiggle room to make your grade up. He posted more announcements about events going on on campus as opposed to anything class related.
Don't take his online class. He did not put any effort to engage with his students, very unresponsive with emails. We had a few assignments, midterm, final that go towards your grade. He would not announce anything related to the class (nothing to say about new assignments or tests). You just have to hit refresh to see if there's anything new.
Save yourself the hassle and choose another professor. The semester ends in 5 days and I still don't have any clue what my final grade is because he hasn't input any scores. There are only 6 essays, which leaves very little room to get a good grade if you mess up on one assignment. I've emailed him SEVERAL times, and he hasn't responded. 0/10.
This professor did not follow the syllabus at all. I do not even know why he posted it, when he did not follow it. He barely responded to emails, I do not think I learned anything. The quizzes are fun to do and easy, but the multiple choice on the exams were ridiculous.
If you want an A with no effort, take SOCIO 120 with Ortega. We had 4 assignments the whole semester that were mostly based on personal experiences and didn't really require that much application of class concepts. Ortega was extremely absent, and I honestly don't think I learned anything this semester.
Can most likely receive an easy A, I barely looked at the lectures and I used common knowledge & common sense for the assignments. I hardly learned anything in this class especially with a non-present teacher. Most of the assignments weren't graded until the week of finals.
Honestly one of the least professional professors I have ever had. Professor Ortega does not care about his students success it's clear as he grades things super late and takes forever to assign thing. You truly never know where you stand in this class because he takes forever to grade things. Do yourself a favor and don't take his class.
I took both socio 121&122. Free online textbooks and materials. Lots of papers, but he gives lots of different options for the prompts. He's very understanding of student's other priorities and accepted my papers late for full credit. He gives dry online lectures, but the actual topics and material is very interesting.
Horrible professor. Does not teach or grade, or respond.
The only grades we got were the 4 test that he provides.. he post discussions but he never post them to the dashboard so you have to go check the modules every now and then. He hasnt graded any of those to be honest, but i do them just in case. Fairly an easy class
I never once listened to a single lecture or read a page of the book and got perfect scores. He does nothing in a timely manner. If you want to learn, take someone else. I aced this class and couldn't tell you a single thing about sociology. If you just need to pass, you can take his class and only have work on the day the test is due.
It felt like he definitely had some trouble adapting to the asynchronous class structure this year, but Ortega really does care about his students. If you're the kinda person to shrug off a bad test grade or essay critique and keep going, his classes are probably not for you. When you meet with him, he will readily explain what you misunderstood.
He post every lecture for the semester of his online class at the beginning and then you're pretty much left on your own. I learned very little and got an A because the assignments were minimal and did not always reflect a deeper concept or critical thinking. He is the worst at grading in a timely manner and responding to emails. Pretty bad overall
Personally, he was a good professor. Do the work and you pretty much get full credit. He didn't lecture at all, but we had to read the class textbook every week. Quizzes and homework are assigned every week, they're based off the textbook. I took his synchronous class so not sure what his in person class would look like.
We had 6 essays in his Spring 2021 course, and absolutely no other homework. I couldn't tell you what sociology even means. He posts lectures every unit, but it's just him reading off the powerpoint presentation and not giving very much information about the content at all. Asynchronous course, so maybe his synchronous/in-person classes are diff.
Easiest class but also educational and social relevance. Good man.
Easy assignments and easy A. Two test: midterm and final both 5 short answer essay, no multiple choice. Terrible responding back to his students. I had to reach out to the Dean to get a response from him. Communication is awful. Takes forever to grade. His video lecture sounds robotic.
Frank Ortega is not a good professor. He didn't upload any lectures the entire semester, and has only uploaded a couple powerpoints straight from the book. He assigned some interviews and a quiz- this quiz had a page explain the assignment but it was locked and remains that way. I tried emailing him several times and got absolutely no answer.
Take this class with this professor if you just need to take this course for credit not to learn anything. You literally dont get any homework, just like one quiz every month. Super easy class honestly. He literally doesnt respond to emails until like weeks and weeks have passed so if you need a teacher who communicates easy, dont take him.
no criteria or guidance on midterm, but grades it really harsh?? does not make sense, considering every other smaller assignment he grades so easily. He does not teach, don't take him if you want to learn. If you need help, forget it, he never responds to his email, it's ridiculous.
He has been completely inaccessible during finals week. The class was very easy up until he graded the midterm, which he graded harsh, and gave little real, helpful feedback. You are better off taking a harder professor who will actually communicate and give good feedback, than Ortega, who is an easy A but is really frustrating
Basically, you make 5 slideshows for "quizzes" I only looked at the material the day I worked on the "quizzes" and had absolutely no interaction with the professor at all. The semester is almost over and there are only three things graded so far.
Professor Ortega was great, he often doesn't explain his teachings so you have to ask lots of questions in in order to learn and get good information. He doesn't give good feedback unless you ask him. This whole class was based off of 6, 1000 word papers. He is not very strict on deadlines so you can turn things in late for full credit.
Easy A if you do the work. You won't learn anything. Not accessible outside of class (will never respond to emails) and he takes weeks to grade assignments. Assignments aren't hard, but definitely read the txtbooks to do them. Assignments are google slides due every 2 weeks followed by midterm essay and final essay. My essays ranged about 8-10 pgs.
He only posts stuff to do every few weeks and tbh I never opened the textbook he gave us. You have to make 5 slideshows about the lecture slides he posts and the midterm and final were both papers. I don't even know the first thing about sociology but this class was easy. He just leaves you alone and if you follow directions you'll get 100%
I found the class to be easy. Professor really tried to have students engage. If you attend class and read the readings, it's an easy A.
Professor Ortega is great! He is very interactive with the class and he cares a lot about his students. He is always very welcoming and kind. He wants everyone to succeed! He is always willing to work with students. If you need more time for an assignment, let him know! There were mostly writing assignments, but they are doable!
I absolutely loved Professor Ortega's class. Since it was a summer class, everything was condensed and fast-paced but the information given was SO interesting. If you put in the work and try your best, you'll pass. There is one midterm essay+presentation and one final video project, discussion boards, quizzes, film assignments, etc. 100% recommend!
Take this class if you are looking for just credit, not to learn. He hasn't graded any assignments yet and you have to really just guess your grade until the last day of the semester. There are barely any assignments which is nice but I haven't come out of this class with anything new learned.
Mans just posts on Canvas, and we do the assignments. He has six 1000-word papers, but he's pretty detailed with what his expectations are. He never gives any feedback, and you barely hear back from him. If you're good at writing, he's decent; if you feel you need feedback, I'd look for another professor.
He's pretty much MIA the entire semester. Never graded anything and the entire class is research papers. The papers are on very broad topics so they're difficult to write and know what he wants, what you're being graded on. Didn't like the class setup and wouldn't take him again
Basically a self-taught and self-paced class because this professor was completely MIA. Semester ended with 8 assignments total which he stalls to grade until the end of the semester. Textbook is provided, but with the class format, I can't really say I learned anything. I recommend for anyone who prefers this class format, however I did not.
His lectures are interesting and engaging. He is a pretty chill guy, and usually gives out simple projects every week or so. He often forgets to post things, though. The final test that he gave out was a take-home exam paper, and it wasn't too bad. Be sure to do well in the easy projects, because those are super important for your grade.
Barely graded any assignments until the last days of school, so you didn't know what grade you got. I barely read the textbook at all, mainly look at the terms at the end of each chapter to help you with the assignments. An easy A, but I didn't learn anything.
I took an online class with Professor Ortega. The class was very straighforward--you're given 6 prompts and you have a deadline to turn in your finished papers, which is what most of your grade will be. The prof grades late and doesnt give much feedback, so just keep the paper deadlines in mind, actually be interested in your topic and you're good.
I took an 8 week course, and nothing was spaced out evenly, the last 2 weeks had actual homework. All other work was done in class. Absolutely nothing was graded until 24 hrs before grades were due but it seemed like it was graded for credit so super easy A. Just go to class and do the bare minimum and you'll be fine.
Professor Ortega is confusing. He basically went MIA the entire semester, only popping up to post some assignments before returning to his hibernation. Very unclear grading criteria, waited to grade everything until the day grades were due at the end of the semester, and did it surprisingly harshly seeing as he gave us basically no direction.
Three weeks into class and I'm already fed up. Does this instructor even exist? Like, where is he? I was really looking forward to learning but that seems unlikely at this point.
Instructions and grading criteria are generally vague. If you are anxious about grading, take someone else. The first assignment (intro discussion post) took about six weeks to be graded, and feedback was probably copied and pasted. The class encourages repetition, not learning. An A is achievable enough, but it is dull and slow.
This class has only about six papers, a minimum of 1000 words, and a few discussion posts. He won't answer your emails and will grade until the end of the semester. I recommend Dr. Ortega if you want something easy.
Prof Ortega is a great teacher who is not too tough on grading, if you want an easy class take him, but make sure you do your assignments and follow the grading criteria and you will pass the class (: p.s he grades assignments until the end of the semester so be patient !
He doesn't reply to emails and if he does very rarely, I sent multiple emails and he replied to a few. He talked about his family but not in a nice way. Assignments were heavily weighted and got graded very late and feed back given was copied and pasted with a few word changes maybe so not very helpful.
Do not take this professor. He waits until the last minute to grade and grades very harshly. He also does not respond to emails. Would never take him again.
He BARELY teaches. RARELY grades homework. Half a year of work all graded after the course was over. If your work doesn't fit his criteria (his grading criteria on assignments is BROAD) and you try to contact about it, he will NOT respond. I have not heard of ANY of my classmates getting a response from him over ANYTHING. His examples are dog water
I took this class as an in person class and stopped showing up after about a month and a half. His lectures are pointless to attend. We were graded off of 6 papers (1000 words each) and he graded them the day grades were due and I'm pretty sure he just made sure I hit the word count and gave me an A. You won't learn but easy A
Worst professor ever, don't take him... wait till last minute to grade all the work, I mean ALL the work we did during the semester and he does not respond to emails.
Worst professor I've ever had, doesn't respond to emails and doesn't clarify or communicate well.
He waits until the end of the semester to grade, doesn't respond to emails (EVER), goes on long tangents in class that are unrelated, gives insanely broad essay prompts and grades incredibly harshly, and complains about doing his job. Easy A if you have prior knowledge of writing through and with MLA citations, but overall an awful class.
Friendly guy, but I did not learn anything in this class. I hardly give professors bad ratings, even the popularly hated I find good in. But this class just isn't worth the time. He has not graded a single assignment yet and class ends in less than 2 weeks. I have no idea how well I am doing in the course, nor do the assignments make any sense.
I took an online class with Professor Ortega. Friendly professor, grades late, never/rarely responds to emails, and course material within Zoom meeting lectures are alright. Assignments consisted of 6 papers all of which have a 1000 word minimum and 1 discussion post.
Never responds to emails, lectures are confusing/long, and grades EVERYTHING on the very last day. Bright side is that the class, quizzes, and papers are very easy in my opinion. It's also most likely that every class he will do some kind of attendance/participation thing. He can also be very humorous at times.
Whole class graded on six research papers and only two are graded LONG after the semester has ended... I have no clue how I've done. He's completely inaccessible outside of class, posts grades late or never, and grades based off of who knows what... If you know how to write it's an easy A but if you like feedback avoid at all costs.
Nice enough guy, but lectures are long and confusing, don't expect to ever hear back on an email or get feedback on anything, and he will not grade anything until weeks after the semester is over. Easy enough class if you know how to write, but don't take it if you like feedback and accessible professors.
Not at all accessible, easy A, but if you have a problem with the submission of an assignment, don't count on him to even respond.
His assignments aren't heavy, but he does assign like 3 assignments the very last week of the semester, which wasn't the best thing with other finals. Accepts late work, as long as you get it in by the end of the semester, he'll give full credit. Makes many dad jokes throughout lectures. Just try in his class and you'll get an A
