All around good professor. His lectures however are dry. Everytime a student answers one of his questions its always vague and never the answer he was looking for. Not bad on grading, however he could at least show more enthusiasm on teaching.
somewhat easy, boring lectures
Not as good a teacher as I expected although I hear he's the best of the MKTG 301 teachers. The lectures are extremely dry and his grading and instructions are somewhat suspect.
World's most boring Prof (IMHO) but the subject is easy. He knows this & structures grading so that missing kills you. There's a quiz every class & it counts twice. Even if you tell him in advance you have to miss, he'll still give you zero that day.
Boring, but great in grading, he uses an awesome grading system. gives group quizzes every other class and lots of Xtra credits. holds a Phd and recycles 70% of his old tests.
He's very boring, very slow. You can not discuss any discrepencies with your grades with even if 75% of the class thinks it's right.
make sure you do well in the quizez they help raise your grade. Other than that the teacher is good for nothing and does not teach nothing. The quizes and tests are pretty obsurd.
Use old tests to study from. Other than that, very boring. Not a fun class and if you speak up in class, don't expect him to care. Doesn't teach from book, but expects you to know it!
I liked him - if you participate, he rewards you with praise and good grades. He has a dry, amusing sense of humor, and expects his students to be responsible adults. Not a bad class at all.
I liked him! None of my friends recommended him, but if you do your work, and come to class then it's a breeze!!
Weird man. Classes are pointless but you are expected to go because there are a few things he goes over in class that are on the tests/quizzes. He doesnt go over the book even though you are suppose to know it. He is not clear at all in what he wants. Dont take him if you can help it.
I didn't particularly care for him b/c I felt he was a bit of a micro-manager and made us do a lot of “busy work,” but don’t let the whiners scare you off. If you are a good student who attends class regularly, you’ll do fine. His tests are somewhat challenging, so make sure you read the textbook.
I thought the class was easy. But too much reading and some kind of team activity or quiz every class period, so you have to go to class. He doesn't lecture from the book, so you have to do a lot of independent reading. Assigned seating with your group. Too much busy work, but if you go to class and pay attention, you'll be fine.
Lectures are pointless. He only covers a small portion of the chapter, but tests on the entire chapter. He gives a lot of busy work (5 team activities, 5 quizzes, 1 experiment, 3 tests). The lowest team activity, and quiz gets dropped though. He assigns seats. VERY BORING! VERY SLOW PACED!
I had trouble finding this professors name because all semester long I thought it was Dr. Cureto Insomomnia.

Yuck. So boring. I fell asleep almost every class. He assigns groups so you might get stuck with slackers all semester. If you want to get an A on your projects just copy the outlines he gives you. Copy all of his opinions in your papers and you'll get a good grade. Avoid him if you can.
I absolutely regret taking this teacher. Although I passed his class, I wish his lectures were a bit more enthusiastic. When it came to tests and quizzes, I was a bit confused on what to study for. Avoid if possible.

great teacher. study for the exams. use the book website, it is helpful. you could get a B if u spend 2 hours before the test.
This guy is not the most focused teacher out there...once a cell phone rang in class and he took 3 minutes to get back on track. Has a perpetually bewildered expression. Tests are almost impossible to get A's on. Grades group projects almost always low. Assigns groups and seating. Requires participation, but did not clarify what he meant by it.
Prof. Philpot is quite enthusiastic while teaching and brings his professional experiance into class. Quizes are easy, exams require a little more studying...He is good teacher take his class
Easy subject, this prof is the lesser of the evils in MKT 301. If english is your second language, avoid this course at all costs. His tests hinge on semantic linguistics, rather than actual substance, and this could present a real challenge to foreign born students. Also. he has a tendency to call on wasps in class and lose patience with others
Assigns seating and groups. Group projects run all semester with a quiz or assignment due every class. Calls on his favorites and not many others, but you can get full participation points by posting online. Test and quizzes are hard, you will need to read the book. Expect to go to class every time and work hard for a good grade.
Oh, I wish I could say something nice about this guy, but I can't. This man is awful, so awful. I didn't enjoy the class at all. He's a stickler when it comes to grading--takes off points for no reason, & his exams and quizzes are hard. The final was cumulative. TONS of reading. Be prepared to study hard. Don't waste your tuition $ on this class.
i liked him, but not a class you can skip b/c u either have quizzes/team activity/exam each week. you have to keep up in order to do well on the quizzes. its an easy subject though...just memorize definitions and understand simple mktg concepts. do this: type up definitions/key concepts for each chapter- study them for test/quiz. that got me an A
incredibly boring, takes him 20 minutes to get one small point accross. Someone said if you participate he will rewrd you with good grades and praise, not true at all. If you comment in his class he either doesn't care or finds a way to make your comment incorrect. I commented EVERY day and still got 40/50 for participation points.
This guy isn't the best of professors. He rambles on and takes forever to get a point accross. Fairly easy class if you read the book. Attendance might as well be mandatory. Quizzes and teamwork every week.

Unfair grader, gives you to much group work that you end up not learning any of the material for the exams. He doesn't teach he talk and talks real slooow. Put in alot of effort and you can maybe get a "C"
He likes to talk a lot. Most of what he talks about doesn't have to do with what your read before class. He's all about class participation and actually has a "check-mark box chart"--yeah, i know. I mean, he's not THAT bad, but kinda rambly(if that's a word). Read the book.
He is an awful teacher. I have had him for 3 classes and have him for one more coming up. He has favorites, says he will record your participation and doesn't, he is so boring, tests are stupid, don't bother arguing for your grade because he doesn't change his mind. Doesn't give +/-. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN AVOID IT!
He's really not that bad of a teacher, but the class is definitely a high-involvement class. You can expect a lot of reading and difficult, but fair tests. Lots of discussion, and he definitely wants you to participate. The class is interesting, but his grading is a bit hard.
He's an ok professor. His lectures are monotone and put me to sleep. His tests are multiple choice but long and you're probably bound to miss a few. The things that will probably save you are the group activities and the group quizzes. If you don't like Marketing anyway then don't take him.
He can't teach and is very demeaning. He went to two Ivy League colleges and makes all his students feel inferior because they're not as smart. Is very strict. Threatened confiscation of cell phones, won't allow laptops in class, or any open books, asks you why you're leaving the classroom. Doesn't really teach either. Only had one interesting clas
Philpot is the worst prof ever! He is strict, unfair, and disrespectful to his students. Tests are hard..he does not give any type of study guides for any tests. Do not even think about arguing a grade because even if he says he'll give you a few extra points,he won't. His grading system hurts your final grade I highly recommend NOT taking Philpot.
If you think multiple choice questions are hard, then I guess his tests are hard, but the only hard part about the class is keeping up with the reading and assignments - and having to go to class. If you go to class and you read the textbook, memorize terms and definitions for the mult choice tests, then you'll be fine. maybe a little boring.
Okay he is not so bad after all okay. Yeah you gotta read alot of stuff and his tests are hard but I dont think he is that bad. I mean yeah boring, old, tiring, hard and what not but who said school was go nna be easy?
He's into Broadcasting/Communication. He makes a lot of funny faces, assignments are very unorganized and need clarification. Group work is heavily emphasized through the semester. Tests are VERY hard and covers material not in book or lecture. He's an idiot and numbers a lot. Get an A on all your assignments and you still get a B in the class.
Hated the way he conducted class. His style reminds me of middle school. Class partcipation has to much weight and is unfairly distributed. He spends several minutes every class struggling with his seating chart. I feel like I learned absolutely nothing the entire semester
not that bad of a professor... but you have to study hard!! its not too difficult to get a B but you must STUDY for an A. Tests are a bit hard but if you pay attention in class and memorize the vocab from the book you will get an A, no problem His quizzes, however, are a whole different story!! very tricky! final is review of previous tsts/quizzes
303-A01. I did his summer A session and I got an A.if you read the text and attend class he is very fair. i tried avoiding him as a teacher after reading some of these reviews. but he isnt a bad teacher at all--as long as you READ THE TEXT. this isnt a class you can pass without reading and going to class. also, i HIGHLY recommend summer session.
Shocked to read he attended 2 Ivy League universities as he was unable to spell the words "dessert" and "conscious." The way he speaks, writes his tests, etc. gave me the impression that he either has a learning disability or he does not know what he is talking about. Don't recommend his class-is difficult and you don't leave having learned much.
I don't know who was that person, who gave this idiot good rating. This professor is horrible as a human and even worse as professor. His lectures only confuses. Book doesn't really help to take his exams neither his lectures. My biggest mistake was I didn't drop this class after I saw how crapy this professor is JUST DROP THIS CLASS UNTIL ITS LATE
Dr. Philpot doesn't take any crap from students. If you want a good grade, you have to earn it. Funny how some professors are like that. Most of the students in my class seemed pretty unmotivated coming in, so these low ratings don't surprise me much. Philpot allows extra credit that can boost your final grade by 3.5%., which helped me get an A.
HORRIBLE TEACHER! straight from his syllabus, "Note that I consider a B to be an excellent grade as does the School of Management and the University." doesnt like giving As, doesnt curve, and doesnt give +/-
tests and quizes are tricky. must study for a good grade. class was fun though. i learned a lot and barely got an A.
DONT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He is the worst professor I have ever had the ill pleasure of taking. He contradicts everything he says. He yawns during group presentations. Very unprofessional. His questions are tricky. He insists on a seating chart. Your grade is contingent on your group and you can't pick your group. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
He is a really nice guy but is boring as hell. He insists on a seating chart and assigns groups of six. He makes the exams much harder then they should be. Do not take this class lightly. You can opt not to buy the book but I really would not recommend that
Great professor. His lectures can be a little dry & boring especially if you take the 3 night class. Although it is apparent that he tries to make the class interesting with videos & articles. Very fair grader. Sticks to the syllabus. Do your work & go to class, it is easy to get an A or a B. I highly recommend this professor!
It is a shame on GMU to have an unexperienced professor like this. He teaches just for fun, he overwhelms you with quizzes, articles and assignments. I really don't know why he gave us a lot of articles, the textbook has more than enough to study. His tests are weird, some questions have more than one answer an some are irrelevant. He is so BORING
I really don't know what's wrong with people who give this professor a high rating. Are they blind? dumb? My class group of 6 people thought he was a horrible prof. and 3 of them did NOT show up for the final out of desperation and frustration. Textbook has nothing to do with the exams. I PROMISE. I'm surprised I was able to get a C.
Guess the people on this site need to study. Prof. Philpot is not that bad. Trust me Philpot is best over Entrikin. Overall MKTG is a boring subject but he try to use videos and other readings to help w/ the dry book. Just get to know your group and work together. I got an easy A w/ basic study habits. Don't be lazy...read the articles and book.
I don't know what everyone is talking about. This professor is one of the best professors. His lectures are a little scattered but they really help you learn the material. He does have a lot of quizzes and readings but they help you keep up with the course. He is a very fair grader. Take the class if you're interested in learning.
WORSE TEACHER EVER! GIVES POINTS IF YOU RAISE YOUR HAND TO ANSWER QUESTIONS...AND MOST OF THE TIME HE WON'T CALL ON PEOPLE ONLY ON HIS FAVORITE PEOPLE....HOW ARE YOU GOING TO EARN PTS IF HE DOESN'T CALL ON PEOPLE!!!!!!!!
He gives assigned seating. Makes u work in teams (u can't pick your teams) My team was very weak... I had to do all the work. Very frustrating (1 paper for 6 people, 1 grade) 1 team presentation. Individual quizzes + team quizzes (same quiz) If you read the book and assigned readings, you'll do fine on the test and quizzes. Hope u get a good team.
He's not bad. He worked in marketing for 30 years so he is very knowledgeable about his field, unlike most professors who are just book smarts and read slides. Not much work, quizes based on articles - easy, one group project (paper/presentation), 2 typical M/C exams. Gives a study guide, that you fill out. Study that and the exams are easy.
The class is not hard. He is a bit boring though. He's not the least bit helpful. If you can avoid him do so. Seems like a space cadet if you approach him aoubt anything thats not what he's doing right that moment. Assigned seating in college is ridiculous.
Assigned Seating, teaches very little towards the exams. Lecture is very boring. Does not know how to excite a class. Exams are Multiple choice 50 for mid term, 100 for final. I would try to find an alternative.
Extremely boring lectures, and hard group projects without much direction! Avoid at all costs!!!
Boring lectures, hard to understand. Grading system was very confusing. Group work was hard and instructions was not clear. He is to rigid. Avoid.
This Professor is very hard to understand. His lectures are boring and his grading method is confusing. It was hard to please him during question and answering time. Avoid him if possible.
Worst Professor at GMU, by far. He needs to be fired. Avoid this professor if at all possible. If you have any interest in your sanity. Not sure why he still has his job as I know he's recieved numerous scathing evaluations....
to Gmu Marketing Dept - offer this guy a retirement package and get rid of him, he is an embarassement to your department. Presents outdated and innacurrate material he does not want corrected by students, becase as he says then he would have to redo his lecture. Awful teacher really hates his job !! Let him go.
Be aware this guy is out to make it miserable for you. the final exam required 5 scantrons who knew ? Because he wanted each sectio of the test on a different scantron, Announced in his last class which I missed because of the snow day date change and never bothered to notify any one who was not in class. Has no concern for students on any level.
Boring every class at 3/4 people asleep first 20 min. He yells their name repeatedly until they wake up or their neighbor nudges them, then acts disgusted and tells them to get a drink. Lecture not reflect test class discussion of uncomfortable products sanitary napkins toilet paper deoderant thinks this keeps students interested. Avoid at all cos
Teacher requests; but I would not submit an on-line evaluation through GMU.they record your email(attached to G#)you verify its you with checkbox attach to your review(say they don't give your name to teacher) but traceable if requested. Rules Change it could come back to haunt you if you say anything negative on the GMU site. Especially this guy.
The class itself is interesting and the project you do in this one, while requiring a lot of work are very relevant to the real world. This prof however is horrible. He really puts you to sleep in class, his directions are very unclear, and his grading is complete BS. Avoid if possible.
I am a staight A student, but I got a C in his class. His grading is completely bias and based on his preference. The project got almost half point deducted. Avoid him if possible!
Not the best, or the worst professor out there. Lectures can put you to sleep plus he rarely posts his Power Point slides. You WILL get a poor grade on your team report, so be prepared for that. The tests are difficult, but not impossible: for the final, just use the study guide and previous tests. He gave our class a lot of extra credit as well.
Worst teacher I've had at GMU. Assigned seating, and stops class to yell at people in the wrong seat. Treats students like children. Gives you a project that has 4-5 sentences of explanation and then takes 20 points off project for not following directions that he didn't state - happened to 3 groups in my class. Tests are easy.
This prof isn't very good. His lectures are boring and he doesn't grade fairly on the group project. For the exams and quizzes just read the chapters and the articles on BB. He'll also ask questions about something completely random from his lectures.
Rude, arrogant, has rambling lectures that most often are not covered in exams and if something is, it will be an obscure reference to a random and meaningless fact from the lecture. I will never take any course he teaches again.
The grading is a point system. Fine, that's cool. EXCEPT for the fact that he does not give A-, B+, B-, C+. You either get an A, B, or C. There's a DRAMATIC diff. between an A/B! Last time I checked A- and B+ are in the Mason grading system. The guy doesn't listen and disagrees with most opinions made, so don't speak up if you value your dignity.
If there were a professor that could be given the designation of Biggest POS, it'd be him. He doesn't teach anything relevant to the course material and he's very condescending and obscene to your hardwork and efforts. He plays favorites and needs to go back to where he's from and say hey to the devil for all of us marketing students. Avoid!!!
This class was my hardest this semester. It was rigid and I really had to try, but very worth it- I got my A, barely. I learned a lot, but I am definitely glad it is over.
I hate this professor. He is rude and mean to his students. His slides are useless with only picture from text book or his personal life. There too many articles to read every week and the final is cumulative while other Mktg classes do only last chapters.
He is right and you are wrong. Get used to that feeling if you are unfortunate enough to have a class with this professor. He is insufferably stubborn and outdated, which is more than enough reason to go seek another professor for marketing. Don't expect better than a decent grade, nobody gets good ones in this class.
AWFUL PROFESSOR! He is so rude. He makes you sit in assigned seats and if you are not in your assigned seat, we won't give you credit for being in class. His grading scale is by points and his exams are hard!DON'T TAKE HIM! I TOOK HIM AND REGRET IT SO MUCH!I hope summer class professors are better as i have to repeat his class!
HORRIBLE professor, his powerpoints are useless, you have to read between 5 and 8 articles every week, articles are at least 4 page long and the group project is unfairly graded. I aced all quizzes, and studied really hard for test and I still ended having a C in the class!!! my first C ever. I wish i had taken the class with someone else
I got a B in this class it's pretty easy. You have to study a lot; participation is key, so raise your hand. If you get a C in this class, change your major.
this was my first C ever! i read all articles and aced all quizes however, his test were too long and hard. one of the guy of our group screw our presentation and we got a bad grade. If you have a group member who is not working kick him out of the group and save your grade! I regret taking this class
Not an easy A. Very strict (no cells or laptops open). With the project, make sure you check your grammar and cite EVERYTHING. He doesn't want your opinions but he wants to hear what experts say about the topic, so if you have something to say then say "In my observation".For quizzes make read the articles & vocab in the book & everything for exams
Philpot is an unforgiving crumodgeony troll that has no interest in how his students do in the class. Many students received lower than B grades due to tests which were written to make students fail. He even says in class that he writes questions so that 50% of people would get them wrong. Do yourself a favor and find another professor if you can.
He is extremely rude!!! Make sure your group project has ZERO typos or grammatical errors! Cite everything! Read the book CAREFULLY and study HARD.Be nice and participate and he may have mercy. It should be an easy course but he grades unfairly. You'll be better off to just choose a different professor. I was one of the few that received an A.
Do not take this professor unless you have to! He is extremely hard when he gives exams. They are all 50 multiple choice and so tricky! He also makes his final cumulative and almost impossible, because the subject is so extensive. He is also not very clear on his group project expectations and fell asleep during a presentation and lost some papers!
If you are used to producing a high quality of work, Philpot's class should not be hard. If Philpot is the worst professor you have encountered, you are obviously not used to being challenged. Study the old exams for the final, show up to class, read the textbook, and don't take his imaginary attitude against you personally.
Prof. Philpot has no idea what he is doing. He often misgraded a question on the tests, said he would fix it, and never did, even when students reminded him every class. He handed back assignments with one grade on it, then posted a completely different (and far lower) grade to blackboard. Avoid this teacher at all costs.
The no laptop policy is annoying. Lectures are decent. Tests come from the lectures; he gives out exam questions in class. He is picky about details: but he's VERY clear about the details he's picky about. The insane amount of group work is rather annoying, though. And forego the extra credit and simply do the quizzes each week. You'll be thankful.
He complains about grammar on papers yet most of test and assignments have at least 20 misspellings in them. All the in class discussionsdebates that he has you aren't allowed to discusses he just puts you down and tells you your wrong. Nice guy just bad professor.
Let me begin by saying that I'm a Marketing major and I know a lot about Marketing already. Lectures are boring, outdated, you wont learn much unfort. That being said, the course was easy, so it was a trade-off. Test Qs are repeated. Group project grading criteria wasn't clear but we still got a B. Connect HW is google-able. Overall an easy A.
Lectures are horrifically boring, which led to leaving halfway through and I don't recommend doing that. Has a lot of assignments, both online and group projects, just stay on top of them and you will pass with at least a B. Tests are not hard, he gives you plenty of help for the final and midterm was extremely easy.
Okay so here's the deal. His quizzes are super easy, the short assignments are super easy, the midterm was ridiculously easy, BUTTT he grades the final group project super hard, so make sure you follow everything that he says. His final is hard because he literally puts random info we never went over on it. I never went to class got a B.
Ugh Philpot. He has good intentions but is just not a good professor. He is incredibly unhelpful with answering questions- yet demands really specific aspects in the group project (which he grades very harshly). Terribly boring lectures, but easy quizzes. The final was pretty tough and not based much on class discussion. I'd advise to avoid him
He's an old marketer who thinks things are still old fashion way. His lectures are LONG and BORING! and from PPT, however he grades on the most hidden things in the book. He has no criteria. He doesn't have good grammar, however he grades pretty hard on grammar and writing. Hard professor to deal with. Raci. Not nice. DONT TAKE HIM!
