Tipler is really awesome, but sort of random and crazy.
Dr. Tipler is a brilliant man, however, he sucks as a professor. Don't take this professor if you haven't had high school physics.
The man knows his stuff but he has no personality whatsoever. The first semster is not so bad but the second is a killer. Bring your pillow!
Colonel Sanders personified. Southern accent might drive you crazy. He pronounces the letter "F" as "Elf," which makes talking about functions weird..."Elf of X and G of X." Also, he says the word "Cancel" as &qu
This man just rambles on. He goes through too many useless steps, which leads to confusion. If you take his class, you are better off teaching yourself. Be careful, he uses differents symbols than the book, so make sure you have his in your test notes.
If I had some background in physics, maybe I wouldn't have done so bad in the class. The grades are based only on the tests, which I found difficult (I like having more things factored in my grade). Tipler is not personable and lectures made me sleepy. I wish I had Shakov all year for physics. Just depends on your style of learning.
AVOID TIPLER AT ALL COST HES A RAVING LUNATIC AND NEEDS TO RETIRE
If you haven't had physics in high school don't take his class because he isn't good at explaining stuff. Just teach your self and do the homework problems and you should do fine. He's really smart to the point that he is just wierd.
bad professor, avoid taking him. he knows his physics, but he isnt great at explaining it. i basically taught myself out of the book. he doesnt do homework, which is bad for your grade. he gives three tests and a final, which is the entire grade so you cant mess up. the tests arent too bad, but the final is impossible. be careful of his class.
I didn't really go strictly by these recommendations so I thought taking Tipler would be ok.. I'd just have to work at it. No. If you have the chance DO NOT TAKE PHYSICS WITH TIPLER. He is long winded, lectures are drawn out, not a good professor at all. Throws curveballs on tests.. and the final kills. I'd go with anyone else.
this class BLOWS! we literally finished the whole book AND THEN SOME (some of his advanced research thats way over my head). he talks really fast, doesnt like answering questions. goes material wayyyyyy too fast. AVOID AT ALL COST
Einstein + Colonel Sanders = Tipler. He's a bright guy, he just can't teach at all. He has no scheduled office hours, and has never given a syllabus. His lectures are worthless, but you can still do decent on the tests even if you don't do your homework (B or higher) if you are really good at tests where you can use your book.
Avoid him at all costs. Does not actually explain the material, just does problems out of the back of the book. Does not like to answer questions. Faces the board and writes small while muttering what he's doing.
Eeks. Don't even consider it. He's crazy, and he can't explain anything. He's obviously quite intelligent, but one of those teachers that can't communicate to students the material he needs to teach. If you take his class, you're basically declaring your death wish!
Doesn't teach just reads outa the book
Professor doesn't connect well with students and has problems conveying important information in a way that is easy for students to understand. changed text books mid course. best bet is to do well on final, which is department written, he'll give you that grade as your final grade if its good.
This class turns out to be a lot of work, but he does grade fairly easily. The tests are killers, but you can basically get almost half the questions wrong and still end up getting a 95. He seems like he's a nice guy, but just a little misunderstood because he's probably out of his realm when teaching basic calculus..
This guy is kind of hard to follow, you pretty much already know everything or learn it in the book. The grading policy ended up being very cool, since he allowed us to keep our final's grade as our total class grade if it was higher than the previous average. A lot of people had trouble, but with a highschool calculus background it was easy.
Absolutely terrible teacher. Don't take him. He's very hard to follow, and doesn't explain things well, and doesn't like when you question him. The tests are curved a lot, but still hard. I got a 63 on one of them and it ended up being a solid B.
All the people who gave Tipler bad ratings are the ones that didn't go to class (Attendance isn't mandatory). If you go to class, ask him meaningful calculus-related questions, and do your homework, he really appreciates it. Plus, if you get an A on the final, I think you get an A on the class itself! How nice is that!!!
Where do I start?... First off, he stress every other syllable and yells all the time. He babbles about the topic and never stops talking. "Do YOU know WHY.... ANSWER?......IT'S the MOON!!!" He never allows the students to answer him or question him. But he is fun to laugh at and his red face, white mustache, and beer belly, is cute too.
He's pretty nuts.
Not the best professor, but he's willing to help. Tests are fair, and not impossible. The Class is not an easy A. I got an A-, worked my butt off though. Suggestions: Buy the book, sol. manual and study guide. Read book before class, do all assigned homework, use study guide to study for the tests. Sounds easy but Physics is a female dog. Good Luck
I took his "Omega Point Theory" Tides class. It sounded cool. It was not cool. It was all about his own personal theories about how science proves Christianity to be right. He made A LOT of giant leaps & assumptions. Hard to understand, really ridiculous, waste of time and money (on his books...) I passed class time by doodling pictures of him...
Prof. Tipler is a terrible professor! He talks to the class with his back to the board and just works problems. He is also very hard to get in touch with. His tests are ridiculously hard but he does "adjust" the grades. The only upside side is he is fun to make fun of! Try to guess what color polo he will wear that day!
I'm in long calculus with prof tipler and it is a nightmare! He mumbles to the board and doesn't explain what he is doing at all! The tests are not terrible, but I have had to study like crazy aka re-learning everything from the book and getting help from friends. FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR
Terrible teacher. Makes everything confusing. I had to hire a private tutor to pass the class because Tipler does not teach the material. He is clealry very smart and probably a good physics teacher but he is terrible for calulus.
If you have not fulfilled your math requirement and math just isn't your niche, long calculus is a popular route. However, let me be clear. Tipler cannot teach calculus. He cannot. If you get him for Long Calculus, drop the class. For the love of God, drop the class.
Tipler is a horrible teacher. He teaches like he's teaching grad students, referring to principles and concepts that the class has never heard of. He's not at all accommodating and refuses to change his policies despite complaints from the entire class. The department has had a lot of problems with him. I would avoid this course at all costs.
Awful teacher, told us he had to choose between actually explaining things and working problems. so he didn't explain. mumbles, awful handwriting, tests are difficult. gets irritated when you ask questions. AVOID IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. also there were only about 25 people in my class and he has no idea who anyone is.
He is a world renowned physicist. I saw a documentary about time travel theories, and he was the main expert they interviewed. So, if you are not good at math, don't take him. He writes huge and confusing formulas on several chalkboards at once and hardly explains it. He stands in front of what he is writing, and talks with his face to the board.
I didn't listen to ratemyprofessor when I signed up to take Tipler and should have- probably the worst teacher ever. His awful handwriting/drawing skills and temper whenever anyone asked a question gets old fast and about 3/4 the class just stopped coming mid-semester(about 5 came on a regular basis). Has 2 TA's and refuses to help in any way
Easily the worst teacher I have ever had. Has no idea how to explain anything. Spends the entire class facing the board and talking to himself while writing nonsense formulas. Gets irritated when people ask questions. On top of all of that, he won't even show up for tests - he just sends a TA. AWFUL. Avoid at all costs.
There is only one boss in my life and his name is Frank Tipler! lol jk, if you can teach yourself out of a textbook, then take Tipler because he doesn't do quizzes or homework. Easy A if you already have a clear understanding of mathematical concepts.
Awful teacher. Not only can he not teach, but he can't test us either. The final was composed of the most obscure concepts/methods of solving problems we (didn't) study. And, he wasn't even there the day of the final to answer questions. Also, he was not very happy to answer questions. Probably a really smart guy, but an awful teacher.
Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, for the love of all things holy take his physics class. He is all over the place with his teaching, literally. He lectures to the board, rather than the glass, and moves so quickly through concepts that you leave class having learned nothing. Do yourself a favor and take from another prof.. Or another take another science.
Tipler is a tough guy to understand and definitely not personable. If you work the assigned problems and know how to do them, you can easily get an A. Tests are open-book and he'll take your grade on the final as your grade if you do poorly on the midterms. I didn't like him at first, but I got used to him and am taking him for a second semester.
Absolute genius (check out his wiki page, amazing), but rivals Riedell as the worst teacher I've had at tulane. Stands in front of everything he writes so you can't see, and HORRIBLE at explaining anything. Ive gotten an A on tests b/c they are straight from the homework, but I've learned absolutely nothing. He's not the nicest guy either...
Literally, not even being dramatic, the WORST teacher at Tulane. Avoid him at all costs. I am a good student and I respect teachers that challenge you but he is just awful. He is not available for any additional help and his lectures are painful and he always ends up pulling out some ridiculous question on a final/test so that people cant get A's
WORST Class Ive ever taken at Tulane. Im premed and am a good student. This Tipler killed my Science GPA. I had him both semesters for Phys and despite putting in a great deal of effort did poorly. AVOID TIPLER AT ALL COSTS!!! SO PAINFUL. not just being dramatic
This man is ridiculous. He knows his stuff but hes so boring and is terrible at explaining things. I'd try and avoid him if math isn't your strong subject
This class was horrible. Frank Tipler is a Physicist, not a Mathematician. My advisor and several math tutors expressed their disapproval of him as well...that's when I knew I was screwed. He was utterly IMPOSSIBLE to get in touch with during the entire semester.
This guy looks is a renowned physicist, is in a documentary that morgan freeman narrates, and looks like kernel sanders. He doesn't care about teaching at all I don't think. Take this guy if you know how to solve problems and dont particularly care about physics; no homeworks or quizzes. 3 tests and a final, all problems. Easy A.
Frank Tipler is a very chill man who does not care wether you show up to class or not. As long as you study by yourself and somewhat understand the material you will do fine because his tests are open book. People who cry about his class are the ones who dont pre-read or study for his tests.
I was terrified in the beginning, but this class ended up being manageable. Tipler sets it up so you have a chance to do well (open book tests, curves, etc) but you have to do ALOT of work on your own. He's not good at showing how to solve problems in a way that makes sense but if you do the homework, read the chapters and study you'll be fine
Do the homework problems and tests are pretty easy. Test is open book. Both homework and class attendance are not mandatory.
Doesnt explain anything. Very hard. Take the other guy.
Tipler is a knowledgeable man and respected in his field. However, his lectures are incomprehensible, he jumps topics, does not clarify what is relevant.Seems to assume all of his students are as smart as him and doesn't teach in a way that accounts for misunderstanding. I emailed 1.5 weeks in advance to review for the final and he did not answer.
Do study by yourself and keep the mid-term tests.
Wonderful teacher! It's all.
The worst math teacher I have ever had. Had to learn everything online. Learned by mid semester my time was better spent in the library than in his classroom. Everyone I've talked to who had him unanimously agrees. Impossible to get a meeting with. I don't understand why he is a teacher, he seems to really hate it.
Tipler is the worst teacher ever. He has a very nasty attitude. He can never answer your questions directly without beating around the bush. He can not teach, basically talks to the board the whole class. You will be extremely miserable and making a big mistake by signing up for his class. Just don't do it to yourself!!!
Does not respond to any emails.. Did not have a blackboard account at all for the class. He gives quizzes randomly. When I say you cannot take notes, you can't because he stands at the board all day in front of it so you cant see.. He also says "Everyone get it, okay good." and moves out of the way so people can finally scribble. HIS CLASS SUCKS
He doesn't care about his students. Doesn't explain how to do the problems, just does them on the board and expects you to understand. He is not a nice man. But, you don't have to show up to class and if you get a better grade on the final than in the class, you get to keep that grade.
Tipler is the best teacher I've ever had. TAKE HIS CLASS
He is a very knowledgeable man but makes the points rather unclear sometimes. He jumps points in class which would very much confuse you. But he is trying to be helpful to take time to give us a review session even though he has little time due to the number of classes he teaches.
Tipler stands in front of the board while he writes, so the whole class shifted to one side of the room to see. He can be confusing and the class gets frustrating. Attendance is not mandatory but there are homework quizzes. The tests are fair.
do NOT take this class if you have not taken calc before. The only kids that do well in the class took calculus in high school. He spends the whole time facing the board and gets upset when students ask questions to clarify. He also hardly gives any partial credit.
Tipler is the worst teacher I have had in my life. I took calculus in high school and recieved a 3 on the AP test. Therefore, I know calculus decently. However, Tipler does not teach. You learn more by not coming to class and hiring a tutor or teaching yourself. He does not help you out of class either.
Professor Tipler is a very poor teacher. He walks in, writes a few notes on the board, and completes a problem or two. He never once acknowledges his students and doesn't care if we are confused. His tests are somewhat fair and consist of the higher number book problems. Although I finished with an A in Calc I, he did nothing to help my do well.
Probably one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Professor Tipler is unclear and unhelpful. Avoid this class.
Professor Tipler is a nice man, but if you've never taken Calculus prior to his class, then you might be lost. He works out all the homework problems, and it's pretty helpful if you come to class. His tests are really easy, and the quizzes are equally as easy. I'd only recommend his class if you've taken calculus before. He's really not that bad.
TIPLER IS THE WORST MATH TEACHER IV EVER HAD. Do not take his class. If you dont already know calc, you will fail. He is so confusing and does not know how to teach. He just does problems in front of you and his handwriting is illegible.
The critiques of Professor Tipler are unjustified on this website. While most of the students writing the reviews have received failing MATH grades, most reviews do not include critiquing him as a PHYSICS professor. Most of these students have not studied his publications nor do they pay attention to the implications of physical law.
BEST PROFESSOR OF ALL TIME.
Enjoyed his astronomy class if you like stars, he explains every problem in the mid-term clearly enough to help you get an A in the final
Worst math teacher I have ever taken. Only go to class on quiz and test days, sitting through lecture will just make you more confused. He is condescending, confusing and generally a horrible teacher. Avoid at all costs
I had never taken calculus before and Tipler is not a good teacher. I would use the peer tutoring program to get homework help because he does not answer questions. He teaches to the board, not the students. One positive thing, is that the tests are graded by TA's and they help you out and give you a better score.
He is terrible at explaining concepts, you'll be in the tutor center all the time. Do not take unless absolutely necessary
Tipler is the worst teacher EVER. He stand at the board and writes problems and the solution and does no explaining in between. He faces the board when asking if anyone has questions and gets flustered when people actually ask. I have never taken Calc before, like most people in 1150, and it is near impossible to do well. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Doesn't teach. I'd taken precalc before so it wasn't terrible for me and the final was departmental. I didn't really do anything in the class and came out with a B because he overrides all other grades if your final comes out better than your cumulative grades. If you're not good at teaching yourself math, don't take him.
He's a nice enough guy but honestly the worst professor I've had at Tulane. The material isn't hard at all he's just terrible at explaining it. I learned more in a few tutoring sessions than I did in a semester of his class.
Tipler is no where near as bad as they say; calc 3 was my third class with him. He's extremely clear and works numerous examples; if you apply yourself even a little you'll be fine. Doesn't require attendance so if you can teach yourself calc. an A isn't that hard. Tests can be difficult, but he only does this to prepare you for the final.
If your final grade is higher than your class average it becomes your entire semesters grade. Giving kids even less motivation to attend class. This system would've been great for me if he hadn't lost my exam after I handed it directly to him. Have fun teaching yourself the material.
Stay away from Tipler at all costs. He's a confusing teacher who talks to his students like we're idiots. TAs grade everything, which distants him from his students even more. You'd learn more by teaching yourself.
Tipler is not a good teacher. His tests aren't hard but he only puts 5 questions on them and doesn't give much partial credit for showing work, so if you don't know exactly how to do the problems you won't do well. He does not care about his students at all, and attendance is not mandatory.
He's very stuck in his ways. He is always happy to help, but his advice isn't always clear and his lectures don't always make the most sense. Also, his handwriting isn't great so you can't really see what's on the board very clearly. He knows what he's doing and if you apply yourself you'll do well.
Frank Tipler has messy and light handwriting so it is hard to read the board. He has office hours but is rude to students even in class when they ask questions. He does not even grade his own tests, but there are 5 questions each worth 20 points. Do the homework, the tests and quizzes are based on those homework problems. The final was hard, 30 MC.
You'll know exactly what your grade is, but he really doesn't teach at all. Everyone who had never learned the material depended on the TA. Don't expect to do well if you don't seriously work. If I had studied a bit more for one test, I would have gotten an A.
I enjoyed Tipler's class. I thought he was very helpful when going to him for help. If you go to class and keep up with your work the class is not too difficult. You must put in work to get the grade you deserve though. We were given a practice final that was the exact form of the test (with similar problems). Overall, I would recommend Tipler.
He is a great guy, and is extremely smart; however, he is the absolute worst professor I have had in my life. No teaching is done in this class at all, he copies problems out of a book with no explanation as to why the math works. I have to teach myself the math out of a textbook, and that is the best I can do. Do not take him unless you have to.
He was really bad at explaining concepts and I ended up having to rely on going to tutoring and teaching myself. He's a very intelligent man, and I think part of the problem was that he's just too smart to be teaching a beginner calculus course.
Terrible Professor. Thinks he is above everyone else and is very degrading. I am not lying worst professor to take for math at Tulane, I asked a question in a lecture and he yelled and called me incompetent and stupid. Avoid
The only way I have been able to do well in this class is through my HS Calc background. Tipler does not teach at all; everyone without a calc background is completely lost. If you get him though, don't fret however, Calc is standardized, so all calc classes across the board have the same HW and Tests. I used to go sit in on other classes!
If you don't already know the material, watching Frank work through problems in class is completely unhelpful imo. Skip the lectures and either teach yourself or have a tutor at the success center teach you the material (you can go twice a week for free). Average on the final is 50-70% and he only curves final grades 5-10 points.
I've only had Tipler for 2 weeks, and he already sucks. A classmate asked a question, and Tipler got very mad and yelled at him for not attending the last lecture, even though he was there. Sucks at explaining, doesn't really bother tbh.
I've taken calc before and so I thought that I could ignore all the terrible reviews for this professor but boy was I wrong. Tipler does every thing the hard way and penalizes students heavily for skipping any steps. Tests are 5 short answer questions that are graded harshly so little room for mistakes. The other class has multiple choice tests.
Professor Tipler does not teach. He expects his students to teach themselves and then simply does problems in class. This method makes me question why I am enrolled in the course at all, as I am literally teaching myself how to complete the work. Professor Tipler is being paid to create tests, essentially, and it's absurd.
I didn't take calc in high school, but I still did fairly well in his class. All he does is solve textbook questions in class, so you don't have to go if you already know your stuff. There are three exams (five problems each; slightly harder versions of the textbook questions) and one crazy MCQ final, where the questions were just unsolvable.
He's ok. In class, he only writes formulas and does problems from the book. There are quizzes every Tuesday, but they are taken directly from the HW. If you do the HW, you only have to go on Tuesdays. Also, he talks about unnecessary physics topics. Tests are worth a lot since there's only 2, but if you do well on the final, it replaces ur grade.
Definitely not the worse math professor but not the best. He will go on long tangents that are often unrelated to the material. He really does care about his students and encourages questions in class and is VERY passionate about calc 3, which can be excruciatingly boring at times. Test and quizzes are pretty straightforward and fair.
Lmao, Tipler is lowkey the worst. He does not know how to teach and overall not a good professor. I only did well because I had already taken calc III in high school. His exams are pretty easy and straightforward though and tbh calc III is pretty easy if you teach it yourself. If you want a class you wanna skip, take Tipler ;)
The single worst teacher I have ever had. "Teaches" by standing 6 inches away from the board and mumbling to himself while he writes stuff down. Then, does example problems that have nothing to do with what he just wrote down the same way, but does them incorrectly frequently. Literally only way you will pass is by teaching yourself.
The dude goes really fast, and you can't see what he writes because he's left-handed. Would avoid it if at all possible.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!
Doesn't know what's going on. His lectures were completely useless. He would do problems wrong in class all the time. It started with 150 students and I think 8 still go regularly because his lectures are just that pointless. More confusing than helpful, and im usually good at math. avoid taking calc with him at all costs.
attending his lectures became pointless and everyone stopped going by week 3. you can better teach yourself by using the textbook and khan academy. he jumps around so much and will leave a problem unfinished, start the next, realize the previous problem was done wrong, etc.
Just do not take this professor. Nice guy but hard to follow lectures with handwriting pretty difficult to read. Nobody shows up to his lectures and everyone ends up going to different lectures with different professors.
This guy basically can't teach. Attendance wasn't mandatory. I went anyways to review problems from the textbook. I stopped going to his class when I saw him struggle to add like terms and do high school algebra. I went to his class during finals week. Instead of doing review problems he talked about copernicus theory for an hour. It doesn't add up
If you took calc in high school you will be OK. If not, take someone else. All he does is example problems and his handwriting is hard to read and he writes all over the place, so it's hard to understand what he's doing a lot of the time.
This class is the best, Frank was very cohesive and clear in his lectures and I understood math to a capacity that I never did before. This is probably the best math class to take at Tulane.
I don't think I recommend anything less in life, than to NOT take a class with Tipler. Worst case if you have to and it is your only option, I recommend skipping his lectures and attending some other calculus teacher's lecture.
Before taking Frank Tipler, I dreaded Calculus and was not proficient at math. However, Tipler encouraged me and motivated me to work hard, and I ended up loving Calculus. Take this class if you want your life to be changed.
Tipler is terrible. Worst person ever to teach you calculus. If I hadn't taken calc in high school there's no doubt I would've failed. If you get him, watch Joyce's zoom lectures on your canvas page it'll save you. Tests are kinda hard but not terrible if you know the material. I didn't go to lectures after the first week because it's pointless.
Horrible horrible but same as basically every calc teacher here. Went to a couple of classes and just a waste of 50 mins. I am not even sure if anyone even goes to his classes anymore.
Same calc exams for all the professors, but take Joyce. Tipler is too smart and technical to teach calc. Joyce is easy to follow
Lectures are useless. Walked out of class more confused than when I walked in every time. Yells at students who ask valid clarifying questions. Lots of homework that don't prepare you for the tests, and recitation periods are equally as useless as the lectures. Horrible class all around and avoid if you can. Take professor Joyce he's great!!
Attendance isn't mandatory but going to class will benefit you. Most people quit going after the first week so the lectures are like guided study with like ten students. If you go to classes, recitations and do the homework it's easy to get a good grade. Worst part of his class is that he makes a lot of mistakes in the lectures and he's rude.
The lectures are a slog, but using Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook helps make the material click. Attending is a must, but worth it if you put in the work.
Dude cant teach, reason no one goes to lecutres, hand writing is unreadable and berates student who ask questions.
Only went to one class. Tipler is awful, WATCH JOYCES LECTURES. Its honestly the cheat code, got an A in all my midterms and practice with old exams.
