Best professor so far. He makes sure you understand what he is saying. If you are a theory kind of person this is your class and if you are not, this will be :)
Franklin rules, funny, humble and understanding.
Frank is just amazing! Amazing in word and in essence! He teaches stuff pretty good and uses helpful examples. He is very humble as well. Taking his class would be the best class you have ever taken. 100% GUARANTEED!
Best Math professor I had in years. Knows his stuff and is very helpful. Loved his class. very humorous and nice. Definitely recommend you take his class.
Great math teacher! He takes a fair amount of time on each chapter to explain things thouroghly. Gives a few quizes, a couple of tests, and the final. Very helpful. Excellent teacher! Highly recommended!
Even though I loved math before taking this class and was one of the best, I disliked attending class and was frustrated about the instructions given. Explanations were unclear. I would never take him again.
He is the best, always available and also, he gives good explanations. You can get straight A's during his exams
very knowledgeable, I think over qualified for what he is doing. Respectful, funny, methodical, what else?!!!, I am short of adjectives.
---AWESOME---- is the word. he's a genius!
Very hard to understand due to poor language skills. He had an attitude when the students would question him about homework or classwork problems. He makes math more complicated then neccessary
He is the best Professor ever, he so understanding and helpful. I would give him A+....Besides, he is kute.
He is the best i have ever seen.He is just too much. He is really good.
Everybody already said this, but he really is awesome. I took his summer calc class, and if it wasn't for him teaching, I would not be able to handle 2.5 hours of math 5 days a week. Extremely attentive, will do every problem on the board. Cuts a lot of slack - gives extra credit, etc. He also exlained the theory behind formulas! Can be moody.
Easiet Math Teacher. very funny and makes learning it interesting. and gives you lots of extra credit and helps you if needed
He is DA beST, any time, any day. Does a lot of examples to give understandin. He's smart & sexy & helpful... its as good as it gets:-)
Franklin is one of the best professors I've ever had! He's very helpful! Overall, his class was really chill and interesting.
THE BEST THERE IS !!!
He is A WonDerful Teacher in and Out of ClasS. Very Helpful & gives lots of examples. Took him for 180 & 181. Was So sAd he didn't teach 182. As good as It GEts. He's burnin Hot!
I have never done this but he deserves to be named teacher of the year. If you don't get an A with him it is just your fault. Period.
Truly a professor that wants you to pass. Must have.
PROF G. IS ONE OF THE BETTER CALC PROF AND REAL NICE MAN. HE GOES OVER MATERIAL WITH DETAILS AND RELEVANT EXAMPLES. OPEN TO QUESTIONS HOWEVER DOES GET INPATIENT SOMETIMES. IF YOU COME TO CLASS AND DO HW YOU WILL DEF GET AN A.
HE IS GREAT!!! I TOOK MA 103 AND MA 110.. HE IS SUCH A GOOD PROFESSOR!!!!!
Prof. Gavilanez is one the most amazing teachers for math! He makes it fun, and easy to understand. He's funny, and friendly. As long as you do your HW, you're good, and he gives out Extra credit during class and quizzes. There is no way you can fail his class! TAKE HIM!
I was just disappointed when I took him for MA110. He?s soft spoken, and hard to understand. A large portion of the class was spent on ?group work?, which was a waste of time. The test are pretty easy, and he?s available for help after class. If you want the easy A, but if you want to learn take someone else.
Group work breaks the barriers of no confidence. He does cooperation groups which is more relevant. 110 is an easy class no matter who you take it with, maybe easier for the genii.
Franklin is more than a profesor, he is the best MA profesor. He wants you to do good and make sure that everyone learn the material. He always ask if students have any question, and explain everything until you got it! He is very professional. Do all your HW come to class, ask questions, and you will do very good. Franki G. You rock MA!!
He is such a good teacher! He's so nice and friendly. He tries to make sure you understand everything before he moves on. He likes to tell jokes and stories and give extra credit. He's from Ecuador so that was a bonus for me. His accent was hard to understand in the beginning but now it's fine. I recommend him!
He is a great professor. Makes Math fun to learn!! He is always available for students and he loves teaching!! Do your homework and you will find the class much easier but if you are lazy just stay home and don't waist your and our time!!
Best teacher. Prof. gavilanez has a heart of gold and never stops helping his students understand. Very helpful. Very nice. Very patient and available for extra teaching. If you suck at math like i do, definatly take this class. i learned more from him and understood more from him through this one class than i learned through all of highschool!
I took this professor during a summer session. He's definitely someone you would want to take if you're math-illiterate. He's very friendly, very approachable. However, it's a lot of work, especially in the summer and it was be very hard for you if you don't do any work. I not going to say how good his math is. The man does have a PhD in Math.
His the most wonderful math teacher i have ever had. He always make sure that his students understand the problems and that if you have a questions, he is very happy to answer it and help u with it. If u r not so good wit math, his ur professor. His the best math professor i have ever had.
Dude is my boi! Love this teacher! He will make u LOVE math!! just pay attention and do ur hw!
1 of the nicest professors that i have had @ MC. his explanations r crystal clear & he is willing 2 explain until u completely understand. his quizzes & exams r pretty straight forward & he gives u many chances for extra credit. his personality is great & he makes his classes fun. he genuinely cares & is a sincere person. i would recommend 2 anyone
he is very helpful and clear in your explanations. he's very comedic and makes the class fun. He is good at what he does. best math teacher I've ever had. also approachable, so you can get help if you need it.
awesome! nice understanding and hilarious! id take him for another math class but im done with math for my college career thanks to him :) he always makes sure he curves grades for us so we dont fail. extra credit project helps a lot.
Engaging, Funny, Approachable. The best math professor on campus.
I really didn't like him as a teacher. But if he likes you, you will pass the class. Go to the math-science center for help if you need it.
Professor G was definitely the best math teacher I've ever taken at MC. He loves teaching and you can see it in his style of teaching. I would 100% recommend taking him. Although, word to the wise, don't get on his bad side. He is usually lenient to those who are respectful and participate in class! GLUCK :)
He is so nice! Dont use your phone. Don't talk when he talks. Do your work, pass tests, you will get an A. He is a funny caring man who truly loves what he does. THICK ACCENT so beware (hispanic) Always available for help. Will kick you out if you disrupt, so don't be immature. Funny and lighthearted. Will go the extra mile 4 you.
Professor makes the class very easy. Gives a lot of bonus points. Very helpful. An easy A!
Dr. Gavilanez is an excellent teacher, he takes his time explaining the theory behind linear algebra and then delves into the applications. An excellent teacher. I wish he taught MA280
difficult to understand and hostile when he doesn't comprehend what a student is asking. all he does is write problems on the board and does not explain them.
He is the best math professor ever. He is helpful, nice and i love his accent. He respects all of his students and makes math fun.
The BEST math professor i've ever had! I HATE math with a passion and earned an "A" in his class! I attended class, did the homework assignments(collected on the day of the final),asked questions when I didn't understand, and worked problems on the board for extra credit every chance I got, even if I got the answer wrong! Need I say more? GREAT PROF!
He is the best Math Prof. I have ever had. His tests are not so easy, but no so hard. He gives partial credits, so you can get good grades if you study for the exam.
Explains theorems in detail, goes over homework when you ask.Cares a lot about you grades and makes sure you not only memorize but you actually are getting the knowledge you need. He is nice, great professor, funny...
he is the best .he explains every thing, easy going and cares for students
he is one of those professors that knows a subject so well, that they are able to explain it in a clear manner. He takes the time to go through the textbook just to excavate the gems within, so you don't get bogged down in details. i highly recommend his class.
Great professor. Gives tons of extra credit, fairly easy grader (gives you points even if you got the wrong answer), and he is ALWAYS willing to help his students. If you don't get a concept, he always tries to explain it so you understand it. Let's you make up quizzes even if you just simply overslept.. just be honest with him and he'll understand
The best! He loves what he does and it shows!! He is a genuinely kind man who wants his students to succeed. Do your best and ask for help if you need it. He will explain until you understand. EC and partial credit on test questions are a plus. Spanish accent isn’t bad.
Amazing professor! He gives amazing lectures and is able to explain every topic very clearly.
Helpful professor. Easy quizzes and easy tests. Might even help you during those so take him !!
Apparently he used to be really easy, however this semester he's been really hard on everyone... don't really know why. Everyone's failing in the class but he'll curve hopefully. If you want to learn calculus... don't take this class, because he is a horrible teacher. If you want to pass easily, then go for it.
He es easy on everyone except on those who don't come to class and don't want to study. Most students are passing this class so I don't know what class the Guy who said he is a horrible teacher is talking about. Rakeen's frustration. I'm sure is that.
I don't get it. If you are failing his class then why you suggest to have him if people want to easily pass? . If it is so easy to pass his class and you are failing then you need something.
He goes at a good pace, especially if you're like me and not very good at math. He is always willing to answer questions. I recommend taking his class
I finally passed this class after 3 tries with diff teachers. He makes jokes in class which makes it fun.I hate maths and just needed a passing grade. If you want a pass take proff Gavilanez. He is very good on make up tests/exams and is very reasonable. Highly recommended
He was the best. Class was not boring at all we had so much fun in the class. He knows what do to and he didn't give us hard time . I really appreciate his work. if your reading this to take his class dont even waste your time JUST TAKE THE CLASS ! He is the best
Best math teacher ever!!!! Genuinely nice!!!! And he cares for his students!!! Take him!!!
He is a great professor, knows his stuff, sometimes he can get irritated if you ask the same question that was just answered but overall he's a nice professor. If you are taking this class in the summer make sure you are focused and good at math because this class is very fast paced and in my opinion not enough time to completely grasp everything.
Gavilanez is a good instructor. He gave me a very good background for Calculus II. There are some tricky questions on the tests but if you do all h/w and ask questions in class you will get a good grade. He is always there for you. He doesn't like lazy people and won't help them. Little extra credit possible. Sometimes he is rude and humor is bad.
He's a great professor. Makes class fun and interesting. Gives lots of extra credits. I highly recommend him!!
Extremely Recommended to take his any of classes that is what I'll do. He is an excellent person outside of his class for all of his students. He liked to help people who needed. He accept me to attend his class beginning of the semester. He likes all of his students, he makes his class fun and enjoyable to understand.
OMG he is the hottest teaacher ever!! He's also an amazing teacher, he explains the work well, tests aren't hard or tricky if you study, and you are given a lot of time to complete homework. He is the best!! TAKE HIM!!! Really helpful and funny too!! he enjoys what he does and it rubs off on you. It is a lot of fun in his class! TAKE HIM!!!
Incredible professor. Cares about students. I'll be taking my second class with him Fall 2014, and I have gone in to ask him for help even when he was not my professor. Very helpful, and he gives students every opportunity to succeed. Very understanding and generous.
Dr. Gavilanez is an outstanding professor. He truly cares about every single one of his students. He takes difficult concepts and translates it into simple language. You will learn a lot in his class. If you are still deciding who to take calculus with... Look no further. Professor Gavilanez is the BEST math professor you will ever meet.
QUIZ every 3 weeks on certain sections from WebAssign. EXAMS based on WebAssign too. DOES NOT show how to do the homework on webassign but if you ask, he will explain and help you. He also helps while youre taking a quiz or exam if you don't understand or forget. Find someone who already took this course so you can do the homework or you will fail!
Awesome guy. Pay attention when he gets distracted, you will learn a ton. Very understanding and likes to make jokes. Gives extra credit, but is sensitive about it- DON'T MENTION EXTRA CREDIT POINTS TO HIM. Very easy to get along with, professor that cares. 100% recommend.
OMG HE IS THE BEST. I LOVE HIM OMG. Hes sooo chill. Everyone should take him, I recommend him to anyone. He knows how to teach. Hes very fair when it comes to grading. Just take him omg hes the bomb .com
Great professor that's always there for his students! Easy grader and not too many tests
He is the best professor I have had in the US. He is a great lecturer, awesome professor; such an understandable and considerate person, such an amazing inspiration with a lot of experiences you could ever have at the college. I wish all the professors could be as awesome as he is... Besides being a professor, he is a great listener and friend.
And God created the best Mathematics Professor ever!...
He used to be a cool professor, now his class is so hard. He tried to get an attitude when asking a simple question. Knows his stuff, class was just too hard.
Dr. Gavilanez is an amazing professor! Warning: he has a thick spanish accent, but his speech is still clear. He's super helpful, even during tests and gives you ample time to do the homework. Print out the lecture and show up to class, and you'll pass! He likes to give extra-credits, but don't ask for it. Also, don't bother buying the book!
Franklin is very cool! Super easy!! Quizzes and tests r really easy! He helps all his students! Loved the ex credit! Algebra 2, definitely go w him!
He was one of the most reasonable teachers that I have had. He wants his students to do well and tries to make sure of it.
The most reasonable professor I ever seen. No reasons to get a low grade from his class. He cares and worries about his student. Simply the best math professor in Montgomery College.
I took Calc 1 and 2 in high school and although I get good grades, I didn't understand the theories and concepts well. Taking Calc 1 with Prof. G clarified everything. On top of that, he bridged Calc with real life situations! He's a genious! He's also hilarious, it was a two hour class and I was laughing all the time. He also cares for students!
Gavilanez is a good prof, his teaching style is straight forward and his quizzes are basic. Tests are a lot harder but he tries help you by giving curves when needed. Lecture wise, it was ok, he did tend to get distracted easily and he also speak quietly, so plan on sitting in the front. He does give extra credit but if you ask for it he will stop.
Professor Gavilanez is an amazing professor! Not only does he make math easy to understand, but he goes above and beyond to make sure that his students are doing well. We need more professors like him at Montgomery College. He is funny and one of the best professors I have ever had.
Dr. Gavilanez is hands down one of the best professors at MC. He makes math so easy to understand by comparing his examples to real life problems. I've never had a professor that was so genuine & cared so much for their students. However, it is important to not slack and to participate as much as you can. I really enjoyed taking his class!
simply the best
He is good professor, but gets distracted easily. You can pass this class if you do the homework and attendance is mandatory. (or at least in the first half of the semester)
He's a great professor who really tries to help you succeed in his class as well as in all aspects of college and life. he cares about his students if you care in return, and can become a great friend. I took him for multiple classes and he was fun and interesting as well as clear in all of them. One of the BEST professors in MC BY FAR!!!
Prof Gavilanez was a great prof! He helped me out A LOT, he explained & broke the problemssteps down for me every single time I asked (which was often, but he didn't mind). I'm not very good at math & don't like it as well but he was very nice and really tried to help everyone as much as he could. An A is attainable, he will be very considerate.
I usually dont rate any professors becasue i dont have time, but i saw someone gave bad review for Professor Frank and talking about his arm which has nothing to do with Calc. Calc at MC is really hard so you have to work Professor Gavilanez helped everyone in the class also gave extra credit all the time to help his students.
Dr Gavilanez is the best Professor at MC for Calc. if you really want to understand the materials which i am sure you do becasue it is connected to Calc 2. my point is if you want to understant the materials take with Professor Gavilanez. you have to show up to class, do your homework, and ask questions and you should be fine.
Overrated; it seems people only give him high praise because of his charisma (which is only due to his ridiculous-sounding accent), and he was disorganized when writing the lecture notes on the whiteboard (might as well get back to the basics via a PowerPoint). I don't know, perhaps, he should've spent more time healing his arm.
get on his bad side, there's no coming back. if he doesn't like you, he'll crucify you. if he does like you, you can do no wrong. he will answer questions of those who speak Spanish in Spanish during class, really not helpful to those of us who don't understand. unclear and unprofessional.
Great Teacher, answers all my question and made sure I understood. Very charming and nice to be around- extra credit.
He's very helpful and understanding when you talk to him one on one or ask questions in class. He also gave very long breaks. However, he calls on students a lot and embarasses them. College students at this level can ask for help rather than individually being asked over and over if they understand it. Not everyone likes being put on the spot.
Give you extra credits on quizzes and tests, make sure you understand the material by repeating the hard topics. Recommended.
great teacher. I FAILED Math096 with a 40%, then took it with him during the summer and GOT OVER 90%. He always helps when you ask. he's extremely friendly and i was really hoping he also taught math 117 but unfortunately he doesn't. He does answer to spanish students in spanish but thats no big deal. If you need help he will help. Very funny!!
He is one of the best professors at the school. Period. I have never met a more kind, funny, and caring professor. Just took linear algebra with him. He will help you if you show effort. His tests and quizzes are easy and he gives a lot of extra credit. I wish I could take more classes with him.
This is the class you want to take with Gavilanez in order to understand maths and every concepts that you need to excel. Other professors wont have as much time to break down the subject as much as Franklin would do. Go to every single class and make sure you are in there to study and the A would follow suit. Make efforts and show your interest.
Awesome teacher. I was never bored in his class, he cracks jokes and tells us the real-world applications of what he's teaching. Really cares about his students. He teaches the concepts very well, so I know I will have a strong foundation when I take calc II next semester. GO TAKE HIS CLASS!
Overall he is an excellent choice; excellent teacher. Charismatic and respected. Gives out EC constantly. Not a tough grader, though he does like to see your work. He does have a slight accent, but you'll get used to it. Does call on students sometimes. Only downside is he will go all over the board in lecture so pay attention. Good choice.
He is an awesome professor. He is kind and helpful. I highly recommend him. If you just listen to his lecturers in class, you will get your A . i am not a math major student but his class was helpful and i learned a lot. overall he is a very kind and caring professor. TAKE HIS CLASS !
His lectures aren't organized but always attend class, he takes attendance. Read textbook before class. Do his online (Blackboard) Section Outlines. See him in office for answers, because this stuff is on his tests. He's generous on homework, quiz grading, gives bonus questions, and note card for exams. Has a heavy accent, speaks Spanish.
Professor Gavilanez is a true gem. I only wish that all of my professors could be like him. I've always hated Math, but he makes me look forward to his classes. He is carrying, he is hilarious, and most importantly, he explains everything the way you won't need to question anything ever again. I would definitely take him again.
Amazing professor! It depends on the student, but as long as you do the handouts he gives out and pay attention during class you'll get an A in the class. He's really caring and gives many extra credit opportunities. If you have a question make sure to ask and he posts reviews for the exams/quizzes on BB.
Professor Gavilanez was beyond amazing ! When he is showing a new topic you can tell he wants to make sure his students understand. Also he drops the lowest quiz score as well as the lowest test score which is very helpful. He also likes making lots of jokes, so prepare for that ! Definitely would take him again.
He's a great guy, very funny, and gives real world examples to go along with the concepts. Offers lots of extra credit and is an easy grader. Lots of HW, but if you put in the work, it's an easy A.
Very knowledgeable and inspiring professor. Wish I could take another class with him.
Prof. Gavilanez is brilliant and hilarious. Absolutely recommend his class and, if you have any interest in math, that you talk to him and get to know him.
Really fun and easy. took him for math 096, and he was pretty good. Makes a lot of jokes during (some are a little cheesy...). I never did any of the online HW, but got an A on every test so I got a B in the class. He will show the math problems on the board, then hand out a Worksheet to do, as he walks around the class answering questions
Dr. Gavilanez is a very professional and hilarious professor, he always full of energy. Took his self-path math class. Though the lecture is not required, he was always ready for help. I saw some criticisms below about complaining him speaking Spanish to students who are Spanish speakers. Even though I don't understand Spanish, I think it's totall
Prof Gavilanez is an excellent calc professor. I had him for the Summer I session. He makes jokes during lectures and genuinely cares about students succeeding in his class. He also provides examples of how concepts are applied in the real world. I never felt sleepy during his lectures. He also provides plenty of extra credit opportunities.
Has lots of attitude. Especially if you are not a Spanish speaker. Although he teaches really good, he lets his anger come in the way. Beware!!!! I had "A" in his class though.
Its more of an independent class, but if you need him he is always there. You can ask him a question and he will try his absolute best that you understand. He explains the criteria well. He is very chill & laid back. The class I took was all online and we got to listen to music while doing our work. Hes a very nice professor and means well.
Professor Gavilanez is a very good professor. The material is hard, but he takes a lot of time to relate it back to real world application so that it is easier to understand. He's also extremely funny.
Will really help you if you need it
A very charismatic teacher. Gives solid lectures of all the material, and is an easygoing grader. Take his class if you want a relatively easy pass.
He encourages his students to do well. Makes the tests relatively easy. Explains things in details. Does something with you to make it clear. Stay on his good side.
He knows what he is doing. He will give you extra credit if you find any mistake on the board( but you will barely see one). He has a strong accent which makes it difficult to understand what his saying but overall his great
Gives so much homework online (can't finish it all), but it's an extremely small percentage of the grade. Caring. Friend of students. Work hard, take notes, know the material, and you should do well. A few extra credit opportunities. Has an accent, and doesn't always answer some questions that well resultingly, but usually I can understand him.
He teaches well and is patient about repeating the explanation a student asks for. He has his unique creative ways to make abstract complex concepts accessible to students. Sometimes in class, negative 'vibes' might be present but those uneasy moments are negligible by focusing on what he has to offer us.I would take his class again to learn Math.
One of the best math teachers at MC. Many extra credits opportunities. Class is easy if you pay attention.
Wow... I am honored to have a teacher of such caliber. He has a lot of knowledge of maths and is amazing at explaining what he knows. He is also extremely passionate about teaching. He also wants you to do well! He gives out loads of extra credit opportunities to help your grade! He's also SUPER funny. Definitely take him!
honestly one of my favorite professors, we had a 2 and a half hour class so he gave us a 15-20 min break in the middle of class. LOTS of extra credit opportunities (about 4 points on tests, solving problems on the board, and correcting the prof earn you points) super funny, gets to know students by making connections.
Amazing professor, just pay attention in class, laugh of his jokes, and just be like if you like him and you would get and easy A+. Highly recommended.
Had him for math181 during the summer. Great teacher. Knows how to teach math in a short period of time and wants to make sure everyone is understanding what is being taught.
Taking his MATH 181 class in the Spring, he is so good in person at first. After the closure of the school, he is not giving clear directions and insult me at the end when I was trying to get help from him. Don't expect he cares for you and if you are going to take him, make sure you are not in the quarantine situation
Calculus isn't an easy class but Prof Gavilanez makes it more bearable. He is patient and kind with students and respects everyone. He puts in effort to make the class more engaging and cracks jokes to lighten the mood. He is a great teacher and gives LOTS of opportunities for extra credit. Respect him and pay attention in class and he will notice.
There's always a chance to gain extra credit. The quizzes and exams are almost exactly like the homework. Just be sure to pay attention on the problems he places on the board because most of times, they will appear on the exam. For each exam, you get to have one index cards of notes, so that's nice too. Overall highly recommend teacher.
Professor Gavilanez is a great professor. However, his lectures can be very sporadic at times. It sometimes gets to a certain degree where you have to learn by yourself. I do believe he knows his stuff, 120%. There may be times where there is an opportunity for extra credit, so always pay attention. There is a ton of homework for online, so prepare
Best teacher for math. When he notices a student doesn't understand he will try his best to clarify during the class, but then just continue after the class is over. Don't expect to be given a good grade. He pays attention to whether you work hard or not. Extra credit was usually from participation so don't be afraid (AND DON'T ASK FOR EC).
A lot of the material we learn is online, so he doesn't really teach anything, but if you are stuck on a topic he will do his best to help you.
He is a really good teacher if you pay attention in class and do the work he assigns it's an easy A.
He is friendly, enthusiastic, and teaches well. He takes enough time to explain the deep reasons or logics behind the formulas or theorems, which is really important to appreciate Math. Tests are quite easy, straightforward. He is eager to help to better understand the materials. As a bright student, he was a recipient of Fulbright Scholarship.
I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR. You will not regret taking his class. He is the nicest person I have ever met AND he is a genius. He truly knows how to make math fun. You can tell he really cares about his students. He always helped me whenever I needed it. I am definitely taking a class with him again in the future if I can. Take his classes!!!!!!!!
I took him for Calculus 1 and Linear Algebra. He really cares about his students and wants them to do very well in his class. Gives extra credit from time to time and is more relaxed when giving quizzes and exams. He also is a very flexible person and very understanding too. I would definitely recommend taking him!!
it's already one day, and I don't know why I chose this professor.
so so so nice! honestly the sweetest guy ever, he warms my heart so much. I'd give him the world if I could. Best math teacher I've ever had.
homework is on webassign and he assigns to much of it and lecture heavy
2 or 3 students dropped out already because he's not good at teaching. His lectures are always him showing us pictures of graphs instead of showing us practice problems similar to the hw which would be more helpful. I do not recommend this prof
You don't get credit if you get an answer partially right on the quizzes or exams because it's all on webassign. Absolutely horrible professor. Do not take.
Takes very long to put in grades for quizzes if you do well. However if you do bad on them he puts the grade in very quickly. Lectures are also heavy and will constantly ask if you are with him. Do not take.
I don't know for the rest of you, but Professor Gavilanez, has inspired me. I Love this professor, He's very old school teaching method the first day of class he embarrassed me. And from that day, he's the one I wanted to be taught by. I always go to him for any math related business or just to chat I can't thank this professor enough. --Tomi
In my opinion, one of the best professors I've ever had. Due to covid, he was understanding and allowed me to make up work. This course had Webassign at the time so you knew your grade instantanesously even if it wasn't reflected on Blackboard. He tries his best to make sure you understand the material. Offered extra credit for a slight grade boost
Professor Gavilanez was one of the greatest math teachers I have ever had! He really cares about you and if you show effort he will really help you learn. Many people in my class did not participate (maybe because they didn't care or don't like math), but because I did I found myself learning so much more. He is brilliant! Would highly recommend.
Dr. Gavilanez may be a bit laid back with his lectures and can go off on tangents which delay the lectures behind schedule sometimes: otherwise he's a really nice person. His tests and quizzes are straightforward and homework deadlines are left towards the end of the semester. He's also very lenient make-ups - granted you're not slacking.
Best math teacher that I've ever meet.
Although the class moved fast, Professor Gavilanez was very understanding and ensured everyone understood the material. His exams are relatively straight forward and he doesn't throw any curve balls at you. As long as you pay attention to the lectures you should be fine on the exams.
I honestly haven't had a professor this good in a while. Professor Gavilanez was always understanding and respectful of his students. I can't express enough how much he understands and tries to help his students. He provides opportunity for extra credit and is also very clear on assessments. Great Professor!
The best math teacher I've ever had. Was always there to point out mistakes and was always available to help with something I didn't understand. This class has weekly meetings you can attend to review the week's content which ISN'T mandatory but I highly recommend it. Calculus 1 can be difficult but if you put in the time, you'll succeed.
I took this class after dropping Calc 2 with a previous professor. Professor Gavilanez really cares about his students' success. His lectures can be hard to understand at times, Calc 2 is hard, but if he can tell you are confused he will take time to help you understand during the lecture. This was the best Math class I've taken in college.
He was a good professor until the last couple of weeks of class he taught a whole chapter within 3 days of class. Made everything very difficult to keep up with! Other than that he's okay i don't believe he's one of the best professor but he knows what he's teaching. and will make fun of u for asking silly questions. I don't recommend him.
I failed calculus 1 twice in a row at my college so I decided to take it over the summer at MC and he literally explained everything in a way that I could understand. Best math teacher ever. EVER. really easy with grading especially on exams he will regrade and give you as much partial credit as possible.
Great Proffessor for Calculus
10/10 Professor. He cares about the subject and students in the class, he is a pretty funny and engaging guy. Gives out a ton of extra credit as long as you don't miss a class. And sets the homework due at the end of the semester.
I love Gavilanez, he is genuinely one of if not the best professor at MC. He is aware of how difficult calculus is, so he provides plenty of opportunities for extra credit (which is honestly the only reason I was able to pass hahaha). Please take this man's class, he is amazing. CON: He might laugh at you or give you a look for asking a silly q :/
don't recommend. its a waste of money and time. if you could, take DLW or take the Accuplacer. it will save you so much.
Kind, sweet older man. Helpful towards those who needs accommodations. He helped me regain a big portion of my confidence in math and now I am doing more advanced math. Take him.
He is the sweetest professor and will help as much as possible, always smiling and somehow happy to be there. He is a great professor and so kind.
I took math050 but I hope I can take his class again. Very supportive and wants the best for you to excell. good to bond with and definitely go to his office hours for clarification! ended up finishing his class early bc we used aleks so it was all self paced but he was there whenever you would need him.
large amount of office hours, teaches things in ways that make it extremely easy to understand
