He is a really good and nice teacher. Highly recommend this teacher since he has clear lectures, always review the whole chapter before the midterms and he post everything online so that everyone can get studying materials. He has a clear syllabus and explain his requitements clearly. If you want to get an A, just try your best!!!
Very good teacher. I got A in his class. Very helpful, whenever you need help, he will be there. If you are Chemistry major, please take his class
He is my lab instructor. He is clear, helpful and very efficient. If you want to learn chemistry, take his class. I enjoy his class. Recommand him
as a chemistry teacher, best ive had. his teaching method is well structured with an outline before each chapter making it easy to follow along. he technique is basic/simple so the student understands the material. tests, study notes and get an A. done deal. took 65 and 101 with him. on my way to 102.
The three midterms were fairly easy if you take good notes and have a good understanding of his lectures. However, the final was hard but overall he's one of the better Chemistry professors.Easy on the grading on the lab reports.Good sense of humor, willing to write letters of rec. However scores from midterms andfinal exam are notscaled.Recommend
he is an easy teacher. I took him for Chem 102 and got an A without study. U just have to take the note from him. U get an A. His lecture is also good.
Very great professor! Recommend 100%. He has 3 midterms and 1 final. Follow his notes and his practice exams and you will do fine. Make sure you really understand the concepts. He really wants you to understand the concepts and he will always be there to help you, make sure to take advantage of his office hours :D
Highly Recommended!!!. Dr. Ow is super approachable as we can use more professor like him he is passionate and cares for his students. Ask away!!
He is a nice and young professor, you can understand lessons to study in his class. His notes are very clearly, you are not waste of time to study but you still get knowledge. Almost quizzes in every week to review your lesson but it is not difficult because it contains in his note! His class is so great!
Dr. Ow is a really nice guy and explains chem pretty well. However, his "practice" exams aren't similar to his actual tests at all. He'll give you a study guide but only one item will be on the exam. Needs to scale exams and test questions correctly.
He sometimes cares to answer your questions but can be moody at times. Overall easy and great professor. Quizzes were kinda hard but the exams were easy. The final was even easier,
good instructor, he is grumpy if he hasn't has his coffee...
Difficult quizzes that you must study for every week along. Tests are even harder. Also, very monotone voice. But he will help you out if you ask questions.
Lectures well and will answer any questions that you may have But exams are extremely difficult, have nothing to do with his practice exams, tells you not to read the book but your better off in doing so.Take someone else that's more straight forward with his exams since he will grade based off of that, no extra credit nor classwork just quiz/exam
Very mediocre. Taught straight out of the book and could not answer students' questions most of the time. He left on paternity leave 3/4 of the way through the semester. Only took him because I had to. Gives the ACS final exam as the final in the class. Only pro is that he's an easy grader in lab. Other than that, he's not very good.
He is really moody. One day he is helpful when you ask questions, the other day he is grumpy and totally not bearable. He makes fun of you if you ask a question he thinks is simple. I hated the way he grades lab reports. Instead of paying attention to the content he just wants to see if you have followed his format. Overall, he is weird.
Honestly a very good teacher; enjoyed his lectures. Not an easy A, he makes sure you earn your grade. His lectures are from the textbook, the exam is similar to the chapter book questions, so you must do your part and study them;Cant stress this enough, it is the only way you will understand and pass; no curves; extra credit only given on first exam.
Really hard class but you learn so much. Explains material in a step by step process. Really helpful and doesn't put you down.
He has a clear teaching style, yet his tests are nothing like his reviews or even the textbook questions. Overall, he teaches well, but if you don't fully understand the whole concept, you will not do well. I would not recommend taking him unless you are very confident in chemistry to begin with.
Fair treatment to everyone, strongly tells you the due date for anything at least 1 week prior, nothing surprising on the quizzes or the exams, and he went easy on grading the exams and labs, which is a HUGE plus. He is one of the best professors I've had for these reasons. Highly recommended.
I do not recommend Dr. Ow. He makes intro to chem class as difficult as possible. Multiple choice exams (my opinion very slothful)! Does not review tests and Im sure its because he uses the same tests every semester! Alot of students I spoke with were lost in his exams but since nobody complains about him, then nothing can be done. Shoudnt teach!
Definitely would not recommend him. Lectures are OK and it seems as if he is knowledgable on the subject but he is terrible at teaching it and all that time spent in his lectures have nothing to do with the tests. You basically have to learn on your own. Very medicre, taught straight out of textbook. The worst, beware.
A complete waste of a semester with this professor. Another professor told me they felt sorry for our class because of his inability to teach his students. He is boring and doesnt care if his students comprehend what he is teaching. He did not even finish the chapter he was suppose to now Im going to be lost in my next chem class.
Professor Ow does have credentials in the sciences, but his teaching ethics and techniques are by far the worst I have encountered. Chemistry in general is a difficult subject. It becomes close to impossible to succeed in the subject when the professor is enlightened to his failing teaching techniques and chooses to carry on with no change.
His teaching is ok but it can get confusing when it comes to taking his test because they have nothing to do with his lectures. He posts sample tests on moodle but they are not even close to his exam. I was totally blindsided and I studied & did problems. Your on your own. Has no compassion to teach! Your better off trying a different professor!
This professor is really tough. Lectures are good but I wish his tests were a reflection of his lectures. Unfortunately they are not, Tests are tough! His class is comparable to a university class. Very tough beware!
His lectures are too general. His lectures are everything that you can learn straight out from the book. As for his exams, his exams are extremely tough. His lectures doesnt seem to be tailored to his exams at all! In general, hes alright.
Professor Ow is a tough grader. His tests have nothing to do with his lectures and are tough. Would not take another chemistry with him because no matter how much time you put into your studies the tests are irrelevant to his lectures. His lectures are okay and somewhat engaging but unfortunately have nothing to do with his exams.
Dr. Ow seems to know his chemistry pretty well but doesn't seem too compassionate about teaching it. His tests are rather tough. No quizzes, no homework. No extra credit. Its all up to you how much you put into becoming knowledgeable about the subject. I have had better professors. Would not take again.
Dr. Ow gives all necessary tools needed to pass the class. His lectures are straight to the point and covers all the material well. He really cares about his students. His tests are however, pretty tricky. Final Exam is standardized. Take his class, you will learn a lot!
Very tough grader. Tests are extremely tricky and difficult. Do not take this professor if you don't want him to put a dent on your gpa.
He don't care if you failing or passing. He grades tough and is really critical. I personally won't recommend him he would put you down and embarrass you.
This instructor was the worst Chemistry professor I have ever taken in my life! And I love chemistry! But he clearly has no passion or patience to teach. It seems as if he only does it for a paycheck. Be careful if you decide to take his class he is a ruthless grader and seems to love to fail students rather than work with them towards success
I took him for lab only during the spring of 2016 and he was just horrible he would take away points for anything. Really critical and really difficult course in general. He tended to be a it rude and sarcastic. His lectures were not related to course material. You need to pass lab in order to pass the class
Dr. Ow is one of the best professors I have ever come across. This course is NOT for the faint of heart and your absolute dedication is required. His midterms were tough (but any good exam requires critical thought) and gives the ACS final. Do all the required work, study, and then study some more.
Not that bad willing to help so ask questions and don't be afraid to approach him. Explains things clearly and is willing to teach you.
The worst, hardest professor ever. Tests are not like practice tests and that are not covered. He made us buy a book that is full of mistakes and looks like high school notes.
he is tough
A professor who's not only interested in teaching his subject but teaching students how to do school in a more efficient approach. He's very clear in lectures and I believe he's a very lenient grader. Makes mistakes often. Want an A? Just read and ask questions during lecture.
He gives a good lectures and explains everything very well. However, his exams are really HARD and TRICKY.
Dr. Ow is honestly one of the very best teachers at ELAC. If you want to learn Organic Chem. then you better take him. He isn't an easy teacher but he is an exceptional teacher. It's a difficult class so many people will write him a bad review but I couldn't be more grateful that he was teaching at ELAC. He's an awesome teacher, don't be fooled!
Awesome professor! He really cares about his students, his lectures are clear and organized, which is good. I highly recommend this professor for those of you who gonna take Ochem
He made difficult subject like ochem become understandable! He explains everything clearly and gives a lot of opportunity to boost up your grade
Overall he was a solid professor, he never went off topic and got straight to teaching. He's not the most approachable and he seems a bit serious. He knows the material and teaches it well. He gave many extra credit quizzes towards the end. Passed the course could've got an A but I slacked. If you put in the time this class would be an easy A.
Dr. Ow brought the love for chemistry back to me after many semesters of bad chemistry professors at ELAC. He makes everything so simple. It won't be an easy A but it is definitely not difficult to get if you truly want a good grade. Take him for Ochem!
Dr. Ow is one of the best professors I've ever had. Ochem is not an easy subject and effort is required, but Dr. Ow really does everything he can to help you understand the material. His lectures are clear, he posts his notes and all of his previous quizzes/tests online so he isn't hiding anything, and he gives you plenty of practice problems.
Dr. Ow is one of the best professors I have had at the collegiate level. He truly cares about his students and is an utmost professional. He gets straight to the material and teaches you what you need to know. He is a lenient grader, and also posts slides, previous exams, and quizzes online for you to study off. Avoid BEING LATE though!
Franklin Ow is by far one of the best professors I have ever had the pleasure of learning from! He truly cares about his students and always takes the time to explain in a clear and concise way. He recently introduced a new interactive text from TopHat and without it - I don't think I would have passed the class. Mr. Ow + TopHat A+
Dr. Ow is one of the best instructors I've ever had. Dr. Ow is very well liked and I can add my experience to that. He is straightforward, very nice, helpful, and encouraging. He's well organized and professional. In summary, he is highly recommended.
Took him for the lab portion of the summer session. It was ok, you basically follow the instruction on the hand out he give and you're on your own. He does offer to answer any questions but acts very frustrated when you ask a question.
I honestly thought Ochem was one of the more boring chem subjects but Dr. Ow made it all worth it. His lectures are super clear and well organized. He makes you understand everything and even has old quizzes and tests up on his website for you to practice. He's super fast at grading too, usually same day. Labs are fun
Dr. Ow is one of the best organic chemistry professors I had for Chem 211! Communicates concepts and reaction problems very well in class. Labs were fun/straightforward. Lecture exams were fair, but tricky. Make sure you put in at least 3 hours per day to study for his quizzes/exams! Tophat HW took time but worth it! Watch out for ACS final exam!
Not easy course, but does a good job with teaching organic chem and encourages students to do their best. There are weekly quizzes (study your notes and old quizzes posted). Exams can be tricky. Manage your time to study, it's possible to obtain A or B in the course. This course helped with preparing for standardized exams (e.g. MCAT/PCAT)
He is very clear in his lectures and such forth, but I had a really hard time doing well on his midterms because they were so difficult, even though I attended SI sessions and practiced many times with his sample quizzes and tests. Go to his office hours! I wish the final didnt count a lot because many of us went down 1-2 letter grades :(
he gives tricky exams/quizzes & lectures too fast. hardly prepared us for ACS ochem final. He gave lots of HW. you NEED to study SOOO much. this class is so difficult & excruciatingly confusing. dont take this class with any other class or any hard classes. his teaching style wasnt the best to help students learn/understand the material.
His practice exams/ final exams didn't lined up with the actual exams/final that we had taken. He gave lots of HW. This class is so difficult & excruciatingly confusing. He doesn't offer extra credit at all even if your close to the next higher grade. Also if you ask him for extra help, he tells you use the homework and practice exams as a guide.
Dr. Ow was definitely one of the best Chemistry professors I've had. He was SO helpful, his lectures were straightforward, he wouldn't try to trick you on exams. Homework is part of your grade so make sure you do it! Uploads all his old exams and quizzes, STUDY THOSE! Don't be afraid to ask him questions, he is very approachable. FAST GRADER!
Doesn't write on the board only googles stuff on computer and worst of all rushes through lesson without fully explaining. Plus a tough grader
gets frustrated easily, not approachable, and most students are convinced he writes these good reviews himself. Take khuu, he has a sense of humor and is actually approachable and doesn't make you feel embarrassed by asking a question.
Dr Ow is very organized. He gives outlines of each chapter which is extremely helpful. Not only will he teach you o chem, but he will show you ways to study. Retrosynthesis was very intimidating at first, but he took his time to show us how to tackle the reactions. Do not hesitate to go to his office hours, he is always available!
Professor Ow was such a great professor, he was straight forward and detailed throughout the course. I took him in the winter, therefore it was a short fast course. He explained to us that it was a hybrid class, so we had to learn lessons on our own time which is reasonable. He posted practice exams online which help tremendously. Recommend!
Dr. Ow is one of the in demand chemistry prof. and now I know why. He is organized and explained all the concepts clearly. He welcomes questions and is a fair grader. I highly recommend Dr. Ow and will try to take him again.
Professor Ow is a great chem teacher. I took his hybrid chem course, and as long as you do your labs and keep up with discussions online youll do fine. His tests are also all multiple choice.
Not sure why he has ANY bad reviews on here. This is one of the best professors I have ever taken. He provides a lot of help and will spend time to really make sure you're understanding the material. He has a very kind demeanor and he is more than enough opportunity for an A with the exams. Very happy with this professor
Professor Ow makes organic chemistry very very accessible, even as someone w/ a poor ochem 1 background. Go to office hours, it seems intimidating but he genuinely cares and is so understanding. I always feel better abt the content after going to them. The tests are def hard but it's always on material he teaches u + partial credit on all problems
I lost respect on how he grades because it is more about his way or the highway deal. I love Chemistry until now he killed my passion for it.
Dont take this professor if you dont want you grades to suffer. He doesnt allow freedom to think outside of the box. Everything must be done his way or a fat zero. This is not the way to do science. In my opinion he is the worst person to approach for help because he will make you feel stupid or low key insult you.
He does not encourage students to go above and beyond. He's stuck in the century old ways of testing students in his constraint box. Science does not work this way. If you don't want your love for science to get shot down, don't take his class. The worst professor I've ever had in my entire life.
Stay far away from this professor! I would not trust any of the good reviews. Very disappointed in taking this class with him. There are plenty of better professors out there I regret not taking them.
He is a good professor, he gives lots of practice for the exams by providing his old exams from the past couple years along with guides for problems and practice sets. The tests can be really hard, but if you use all of the resources he provides you'll be alright. No live lectures everything is prerecorded so the class is at your own pace.
Great class. I would definitely take another class by Dr. Ow.
Take Dr. Ows class. He is clear and helpful. You can really tell he knows his stuff.
Dr. Ow, a smart professor that may be better understood in an in-person setting as his online pre-recorded lectures are too short to cover the extensive material in 2nd-semester o-chem. His exams are open notes, but extremely challenging with harsh grading criteria. Skip Ow for now since we are online, his hands-off approach is not for everyone.
Hi students. I got my A graded Chemistry with Prof Ow. The secret to pass prof Ow is to practice ALL textbook questions and review pre-loaded MP3 Q&A (even questions from Textbook) from Prof Ow. His exam question is NOT too hard, and you need to understand the question and use the correct formula. Basically, chemistry is very quantitatively subject
CHEM211: I had a mediocre experience with lecture and lab. Study at your own pace, no synchronous meetings. Difficult but interesting subject. Dr. Ow: In my experience there are discrepancies regarding grades and I HIGHLY advise to ask questions on how points are broken down. If issues arise, make sure to leave nothing open ended.
Online class, super organized super simple. The grading system was simple but it was a five-week winter class, so that's probably why. You can find the textbook for free online but to be honest I'd choose a different professor. He doesn't teach, he simply owns a program. Went to office hours with him a few times and YouTube was better.
Office hours are inexistent in this class. It's not even a drop in OH, you have to beg for an appointment with him first. He'll just tell you to refer to his pre recorded lectures even if you have specific questions about the videos. I wish I could have his job, just upload old videos and refuse to work during office hours. Pretty easy paycheck.
Extremely hard to reach and will not answer emails pertaining to anything about the class.
Uses recycled lecture videos from ucla, does not bother teaching subject, did not know being a professor was this easy.
The coolest Chem teacher I have ever had!
Dr.Ow is a great professor. He understands if you need a time extension on tests and never gave out homework. He only had you post a question on that weeks chapter which was for attendance credit. Most of the test questions are based off of practice problems from the textbook or video lectures.
The class is very structured. Basically I find that as long as you manage your time well to do all the top hat assignments and his practice problems, you will be fine. The exams and quizzes are pretty easy. There is a lot of extra credit at the end as well.
this class is basically you doing no work for him doing no work, It feels like you don't learn. The homework is very little, as well as easy, and he will forgive a missed test, however, the lectures, slides, and general study material sucks. There's a lot of missed material in the lessons, and the slides provided are not good, nor the right ones.
EASY A! All pre-recorded lectures. Not a tough grader. Was understanding when I needed to change my test date. Gave PLENTY of study material from old exams and study guides. I never used the book. He responded to my emails. CHEMISTRY IS NOT MY THING AND I GOT AN A+! If you need interaction, this is not the class.
EASY A! All pre-recorded lectures. Not a tough grader. He was understanding when I had tech issues and another date I had to travel on a test date. Gave PLENTY of study material from old exams & study guides. I NEVER used the book. He responded to my emails. CHEMISTRY IS NOT MY THING AND I GOT AN A+! If you need interaction, this is not the class.
Considering dropping due to tests being MUCH harder than lecture/TOPHAT. Many are struggling. No curve or EC mentioned, and grades rely on HEAVILY on tests. Lab scores are better despite worse reviews (diff prof). Not sure if help will come later, but if TOPHAT aligned with tests, I'd would take him again. Will update RMP after semester.
I would not recommend this class...
The professor is amazing. He communicates clearly, is patient when students need extra help, and truly cares about our success. His passion for teaching shows in every lesson, and it makes the class both engaging and easy to follow.
