He is very understanding and nice. His lectures are clear and exams are easy. Exams are based on home work assignments.
GREAT PORFESSOR A CLASS WORTH GETTING UP FOR. I COULS NOT UNTIL SATURDAY THAT WAS WHEN I TOOK AND WILL TAKE HIM FOR HIS 232 THIS FALL.TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!
I took this professor for both history 231 and 232 he is great. Very understanding and very helpful. He makes the class fun by joking around with the history that you learn in his class. GREAT PROFESSOR TAKE HIM.
Great professor , very understanding
This professor is very brilliant. He knows his material and he is very skilled in presenting it. What I admired best was Mr. Bilenkis unique way of presenting the material...he lectures and expects the students to take the necessary notes.
Ridiculous! He quizzes & harshly grades you on material before he lectures on it.Not fair.Regular quizzes w/at least 2 essay questions that contain 3 essay questions. He know his stuff & lectures well.I do not recommend!
Okay all I can say is that he knows his stuff. He's also very lenient and understanding. My friend and I brought in a term paper about a week (me) 2 weeks (friend) late and all he really did was shave a few points and let it be.
Class attendence is not important to him. The grade that you earn is the grade that you will receive. If you receive an A on all exams and rarely come to class he is going to give you an A. If you have great attendance and fail your test you won't pass.
This professor is very good. He is not easy but yet not hard. He explains exactly whats going to be on the tests before he gives them and they usually are essay format....
boring!!!
Makes history exciting. Take this professor!
He is a good teacher and you will learn alot if you pay attention in class. The course requires alot of reading and all 4 tests are essays. Usually choose 2 out of 3 questions. Plus a term paper. I did all the work and got a B+. His instructions can be vague at times. So pay attention.
boring, boring, boring and alot of lectures.....
Bilenkis is a very cool teacher if your into all this history personally the class was boaring and had too much reading but he gives leeway on grading if he see an effort. All around hes a good teacher.
I took his class in the summer, we has to read 75-125 pages a night, he gave exams every week based on the reading, the internet will help u, attendance does not matter, do the readings and what you get on your first exam will pretty much determine your grade.
He was advised that a lot of his students come in to take an exam with pre written text in there pockets and apparently he did not do anything about it. In otherwords, he gives you the questions before hand, just prepare for it. Of, he has favorites.
HE IS A HARD GRADER. EVERYTHING IS IN ESSAY FORM.A LIL BORING BUT A VERY CHARMING MAN AND UNDERSTANDING PERSON.TAKE HIM IF YOU LIKE CHALLENGES.
His lectures on what the essys will be on.The homeowrk he gives he doesnt check but thats your studynotes for essays he gives in class-their straight from there. If u take him Sat take 12:30-3 b/c you can leave early he doesnt care. One 7 page paper on a boring topic. He grades easily.Take him!!!
His lecture-style leaves much to be desired. He's not very ineractive & it's easy to fall asleep on an early saturday morning. He needs to move aronud more or write more on the board. It took several cups of coffee for me to realize that he does lecture many interesting points, so just be awake &
He has some mixed ratings but he really is a great prof. I am not generally interested in history but Prof. B made the subject matter interesting and gave it a personal feeling. He seems so interested that you become intersted. Since the class is on Saturday morning i guess he's fighting an uphill battle as far as bordome goes. Take his class.
His lectures are boring. I think he grades to hard. I wouldnt suggest anyone take him. His class is too hard.
Do not take his class if your life depends on it!!! Lectures are boring, too much work for a summer course, does not interact with students. Just look at what i am doing while his class is in session. Oh and your first grade will be the same grade you get for the rest of the semester so don't bother working too hard after the first test.
HISTORY 231-This is the man to take if you are interested in learning a little something about history. This man knows history like you know how to sleep. His test are all essay questions, which are very fair. There are no surprises on his test. He tells you what you are expected to know and tests you on that. I highly recommend him. A+
Let me tell you one thing your first grade will be your last grade but overall he is a cool dude, he just doesn't look at the work students do, you'll get the same grade over and over again no matter how hard you try
he knows his stuff and if you have enjoy history you should like the class and it a easy class , for me, its base on the hang out.
He is an average professor who is easy. If you don't like professors that talk for the entire class time, RUN !!!. He knows his history, but lectures can sometimes be boring. Otherwise, his exams are based exactly on the hand-out assignments he gives. But be careful, his quizzes are really essay's. If U can deal with the above just to pass easily, go ahead.
He makes you buy 2 bks and the readings are required in order to pass his class. He gives 5 quizzes(essays) and 1 final exam and paper to do for the entire semester. If you don't like reading a lot - I mean ALOT - then this class is not for you. He lectures the whole period nonstop. He is a nice guy but can be very boring. He is a fair grader.
Skip him...I took class during Winter 06'. The required textbooks(2) are boring & you read alot. He lectures the entire class. WARNING! He gives written exams, the 1st grade is ur grade on all exams. He begins exams by telling U2 write down UR OWN interpretation & analysis of text, then marks ur paper wrong 4 entering own opinions.
He is a good teacher. Lectures are informative. Much reading but great primary sources for objectivism. Never exceeded B+ buthe provided written feedback on all work and challenges one to perfect essays. However one hour for two perfect essays is somewhat impossible. You will learn a good deal of history.
He is a great history professor. He knows all the material in depth and can elaborate on the why behind alot of the conflicts we see in history that the text does not necessarily discuss. He is always open for in class discussion. His exams are straightforward but he doesn't want the exact wording from the text you can elaborate which is great!
This professor lectures were boring to me for someone who doesn't enjoy history. A lot of reading is required from the two textbooks All quizzes are essays. You get essay quizzes, a 5 pg paper, and final exam requiring you to write two essays and identify 6 stories from the supplement text. He is a very nice guy. make up quizzes if you miss them
one word-BORING!!!...he could put me to sleep! The gradxe you get on your 1st quiz is the same grade you'll receive all semester. Nice guy, but extremely, extremely boring!
A lot of reading and boring lectures .Though I slept through some classes I learnt a lot .
Good teacher..must do all reading if you want to pass this class.....all exams and quizzes are essays...one five page paper also due......classes range from boring to interesting depending on the topic...overall taking him won't hurt
nice professor. hes a fair grader too..i just wish his exams & quizzes wouldve been in multiple choice format rather than essay. make sure you do the readings cuz thats the only way you gonna pass!
HE IS STUPIDLY BORING. ITS NOT A DIFFICULT CLASS IF U DO THE WORK. ITS NOT AN EASY A, U GET THE GRADE U DESEARVE AND SOMETIMES HE CAN BE A LITTLE LEANIANT. I LIKE HIM OVERALL, EVEN THOE HE CAN BE REALLY REALLY BORING ALOT SINCE ALL HE DOES IS LECTURE AND QUIZ.
This guy gave us 2 books and had 2 chapters a day to read. One book we were obliged to buy even though he doesnt like it and doesnt ask questions from that book. We had to read 2 chapters a day (summer class) which was hundred of pages.. Its radiculous, everyone was sleeping in his class
He's pretty easy, you just have to read the text and take notes in class. And he's easy going.
I took him for his 231 loved his style so i took him again. You have 2 text and a lot of reading(sometimes a chapter or more in each book). You have to read or you will be lost. He gives you the questions for each exam, which are essay. Again you have to read, he lectures whole class. A very fair grader oh and a short paper 5-7 pgs.
Great professor, will agree there is a lot to read but then again it's history so of course there are many chapters. I took him on saturdays and I was fully awake there. He has a sneaky sense of humor of which only those who know the subject get. Pretty funny in a silent way.
He is very knowledgeable in the subject, amazing, lectures the whole class, it does get boring, but he's a great professor, funny too, I enjoyed his class, just do the readings, and stay awake...
Professor is funny and tries to make the class as exciting as possible. He gives weekly exams but if you do the reading you'll have no problems. Professor is understanding and one of the best History professors at John Jay - well worth it. I learned alot!
He is as average as a proffessor can get. The classic movie professor that talks for an hour and slips in jokes once in a while. He in okay, a quiz every week rotating from multiple choice to essay. A lot of reading, a basically a chapter a week from who books, but the essay questions are given in advance so ints not that intense.
Professor Belinkis is the best. He is soooo intelligent, funny, and helpful. I sure will take his class again if I could.
Took his class during the summer and his expectations are unrealistic. One of those professors who thinks you have nothing better to do with your time and expects you to read an absurd amount of chapters in the texts given. I understand you have to cram a semester's worth, but it's plain ridiculous. Class is pure lecture with a few notes given.
I took it for summer and the reading load was quite intense. Sylabus is extremely clear, just follow the assignments and you'll be fine.Professor can go for compromise and seems like he understands the student's life wery well and does not try to make it harder. Just do what you're supposed to do as a student in college - study!
Excellent Professor, but can you say information overload?!! Be prepared to do a lot of reading and study study study.
Definition of a professor, 9 chapters 15 weeks (rarely use second book) 4 MC 3 essay quizzes and a 5 page paper. He only does lectures which is boring/interesting upon you. He knows what he is talking about really in debt. Easy A if you do the reading and Syllabus provides all the questions for quizzes so you do the math.
Great proffessor. Definitly one of the best proffesors in John Jay! Crystal clear - after his lectures you only need to skim the textbook for the small details. He gives the questions for the exams. If you will sit and answer them-for the exam read your own answers - you will ace it. Reily book - not so important .use mcgrew hill website!
Good teacher... A lot of reading.. do it and you will get an A. Everything required is laid out crystal clear at the beginning of the semester.
Professor Bilenkis teaches Global History through causes/effects. The class consists of a few quizzes ranging from multiple choice to essays that he gives the questions ahead of time, two short papers, and a final exam. Overall, just do the readings and show effort on your part. He looks like the fellow from the Men's Warehouse commercials.
Prof Bilenkis is an excellent professor! Pretty easy class but boring at times. Every thing is laid out crystal clear on the syllabus including questions that will be on quizzes throughout the semester. Would take him again if I had the chance!
Awesome professor. History may be a boring subject at times but this prof shows his knowledge a great deal. Little multiple choice quizzes and essays throughout the semester. And the final is a great with the given study guide. Easy A with effort.
Fascinating professor who teaches history through causes and effects. While there is a wealth of information you must master for the several essay-based exams, he is a very fair grader and his lectures are engaging. Definitely worth taking for your general education requirement as he makes history extremely relevant.
He is very intelligent I won't deny that; however he is not a good history professor to have. Yes he gives you study guides but they confuse you more than they guide you. His essay questions have 10 within each question & are not straight forward. Overall a very unreasonable grader. Good luck to anyone who does decide to take him, you will need it!
He's very passionate about what he teaches! he knows the information in the textbook by heart. Class consist of mostly lectures. quiz every couple weeks. It can get boring with all the lecturing, but everything said is useful information. he gives one paper, a few quizzes, and the final. do the readings, pay attention and you will be fine
Prof. Bilenkis is extremely passionate about history. He is like a walking textbook! Yes, he can be really boring but you will leave the class with a new appreciation for history! Got an A but worked tremendously hard for it. Participate, do all the readings and make sure you study for each quiz and exam. He's the best! :)
You better save yourself, he doesn't post notes- he rambles a lot and he'll make you fall asleep. I love History, but after taking his class I feel relieved that I don't have the interest anymore.
You need to read and listen intently. Take notes of what he says you'll need it for the exams. Study hard and you'll get a good grade.
This professor is really smart and really nice! I'm surprised to see so many negative comments. No doubt his style of lecturing can put you to sleep (as i have) but if you stay focused you can learn a lot. Lots of (interesting) reading, few tests and one final essay. Thats not bad if you ask me ;)
Get ready to read is an understatement. If reading is not your thing, do not take. If do take it, it will be a lot of work but its not difficult material. Couple of quizzes, a paper and a final. If you put enough time in, you will get an A. If you love history, take the class, he will help you as much as he can.
He is a little sarcastic when he is talking about events in history. History is such a dark subject but he makes it less so without minimizing the reality of what happened. He welcomes questions unlike some instructors. If he does not have the answer, which is a rare occurrence, he will look it up for you. You know what you are getting from day one
A kind and fair professor. Very passionate about what he teaches
lectures are divided into five sections of history that are discussed in the semester. studying the material listed on the syllabus is recommended as it helps you for the test. The questions for the test are on the syllabus. Professor is very knowledgable and will answer questions if asked. Downside: does not use blackboard, no info posted online.
A bit mono tone but he's easy going.
Great teacher. Can be a little boring when he takes a lot of notes. However, he tries to be as engaging and relatable as possible. And don't feel discouraged if you want to ask questions. He has great knowledge of history
he is a very sweet guy. he gives quizzes but the questions are on the syllabus and there's a final paper. he wants you to be detailed in your answers on the quiz so make sure you answer the question fully. he definitely knows what he's talking about in class, great guy. answers all questions to the best of his ability.
This guy is a great professor. He can be a bit boring sometimes but he can make the class entertaining at times. He really, really knows what he is talking about, and he will answer any questions. There are 5 sections of history for the class, and there are 2 essay quizzes, a "midterm", a final, and 1 paper. Not too demanding either.
There are 4 quizzes, midterm, final, and 6 page paper. He is very caring and answers anything you ask him. He is very passionate about history!
If you like history and dry humor take a class with him. If you show interest, the class becomes fun. He is willing to accommodate the pace of the class. If you are unwilling to engage in the conversation (just sit there), he won't force you to participate but the class will drag on. It's difficult to fail regardless.
Professor Bilenkis knows his material very well. He doesnt use blackboard and is old school. He lectures for the entire class and theres a lot of reading materials. Only graded by a few quizzes and a final paper. Its definitely not an easy A especially if you dont like to read, like me. If you enjoy history and reading hes a solid choice.
Talks through whole lecture. Wasn't much interaction with the class so it made the lectures boring. Doesn't use powerpoints or post notes to blackboard. There were a few quizzes throughout the semester and a 6-page final paper. The directions for the paper were kind of unclear. I like learning about history but this class made it feel like a chore.
I found this class very difficult. Boring lecture. Quiz after every reading. Hes brilliant and knows his stuff, but class was not for me. Way too many readings. He gave me a B+ in the end. If you want an A, you have to work real hard for it.
TAKE HIMMMMM. I took this class fully online during covid 19. Hes extremely helpful. Responds back to his emails. He wants you to read texts and write on the discussion board. There was no final and has one essay which is considered the final.
Prof Bilenkis is smart and interesting. His workload is not too much, just 4 essay question tests, weekly discussion boards, and one research paper as a final. His research paper guidelines can be confusing because this is an asynchronous class so make sure you understand that. Overall, worth taking!!
His lectures are boring. just talking for an hour straight. He doesn't grade anything until the semester is over so your grade is a surprise. He answers emails fast. There are quizzes and disscusion posts every week and a final paper 6 pages long.
He's a nice guy but his lectures are very boring; all he does is talk to the class for the hour. There's no interaction between the students. Other than that, he doesn't give you a lot of work. He gives ample time to do your work. 4 quizzes based on lessons and videos, one final research paper, & discussion boards on the lessons.
Very intellectual and pretty chill person. His lectures are pretty boring; it's just him talking about the topic for the entire session, with very little to no student interaction - but you can always participate if you want. Gives alot of time to get work done - just 4 quizzes, discussion board and the final research paper. Provides great feedback
If you are not interested in history just be prepared to be bored, he is not a bad teacher by any means but his lectures can be long. He is very knowledgeable on everything but it can be a little boring something.. other than that he is a good professor. DBs every week, quiz every two, and a final paper.
Professor Bilenkis is a lecturer, ngl some days id show up and be zoned out and almost fall asleep because it was an 8am but the work he asked for was very easy and he grades fairly. overall its an easy A if you don't like to participate and learn more by reading his lecture notes and listening to his lectures.
5-week online summer class. The week's workload is 2 discussion board posts with extensive readings/videos and a test (2 essay questions). I enjoy what the course is about (1960s history) however there is just way too much work/reading for a 100-level class. There is a 6pg final paper on whatever topic you want as long as it relates to the 1960s.
He does not have any notes/power points on the board but does include a summary of the chapter(s) you're supposed to read on BB. A lot of reading. Answers emails really quick. 4 tests total. 2 online, 2 in class. If you cannot learn by listening to someone for 1 hour straight, try for someone else. Not the worst, not the best.
This is a terrible class. Assigns hundreds of pages of reading every week. Grading system is arbitrary and quiz questions are vague. Lectures are the entire class time and he just drones on in a monotone. It is hard to tell what from his lectures will be on the tests. Even his tone is boring and difficult to listen to.
Bilenkis is a great professor. He is very knowledgeable about history and will teach you a lot in his class. He is also very approachable and helpful. His lectures are long and a bit monotonous at times, but you'll still learn a lot from them. The quiz questions can be confusing, but he'll help clarify if needed. Definitely recommend him!
Professor Bilenkis is an adorable person with a great personality but please do not take this course if you hate lectures. He does not use power points or visuals. It is strictly lecture.. He assigns about 4-8 pages of reading every 1-2 weeks along with a book that we had to read a chapter for. Please don't take if you have focusing problems.
Professor Bilenkis is very knowledgeable on the material that he teaches. He is a sweet person, but his class was almost unbearable. There are no PowerPoints to look at during class and it is all lectures. He does respond to emails quickly and gives good feedback on assignments.
He seems like a nice enough guy but the course instructions are very vague. Tons of readings from so many different readings that it is confusing. The subjects on the 1960's are very interesting but the course layout itself is a mess.
