Good guy. Good head on his shoulders. If you work hard, youll thrive in this class.
One of the greatest history teachers i have ever had. He has a lot of lectures and required readings, but put in the work and you will do well in the class. He trues his best to accommodate the needs of his students by taking some surveys and then implementing the feedback from them. Overall he is a caring and funny teacher .
He's a great teacher. If you miss more than 4 classes it affects your grade. He has many different and unique assignments to get you involved in learning. He does offer some extra credit like a survey and bonus points on the midterm. He gives a study guide for the test. So, if you work through that, you should do well on the tests.
He gave a pop quiz pretty much every Wednesday that he graded pretty much pass/fail. You have to speak up in class in order for him to be willing to help your grade. He is also a tough grader. Powerpoints are very undetailed so you have to read the material.
He is a really cool guy, but he is a very harsh grader. He grades any essays or ID terms very tough, and he really makes you work to make a good grade in his class. He has a couple of pop quizzes, so always do the assigned readings or you will fail them. Two test, a midterm and final, so really study... everything!
He is way too much of a harsh grader. A lot of reading. A lot of group work, and you he does not care if others in the group work harder on projects. His lectures are not clear, the power points literally have like 5 bullet points. The quizzes are so hard, and he never gives you ways to prepare for them.
Prof Carroll is a great professor. His quizzes are a little tough but he offers help and extra credit on them. He also cares about your input and will work with you. He was interesting to listen to in lectures and I enjoyed his class very much. If you do the work, it is an easy A.
He was always available outside of class when I needed help with papers. He cares a lot about student input and amends his class to an appropriate degree based on student concerns. He is really passionate about history, and lectures are always great. He offers A TON of extra credit. Lots of reading the textbook and documents, but AMAZING class!
Prof. Carrol was great. Communicated his expectations very well. He's very passionate about History. His lectures help with understanding the course material but you need to read the chapters assigned if you want to be successful on quizzes. He gives great feedback on essays. Yes. His history class has essays. Which I was fond of.
This man is so sweet and kind and awesome, seriously. Do yourself a favor and take his course. He does make you work for the grade you want but all in all his class is enjoyable and he is genuinely such a nice man. 3 quizzes, 2 tests and 2 projects basically make up your grade so make sure to try your best on those.
Class is made up of discussions, quizzes (take the practice quizzes). He grades based off of the rubrics, so follow those exactly and you will do just fine. Midterm was a paper with a few options on what to write about. We had to write one other essay worth a big portion of our grade, but had 4 chances to write it depending on what topic you chose
Do not take this class online despite what others said. He literally gives a 400-600 word essay to write every week with citations. You have to write a full 1000 word essay for the class with a 1000 word essay for the midterm and final separately. Plus he is a very harsh grader that loves citations. I wrote way less in English, don't take, I repeat
3 quizzes for weeks 1-5, 6-10, 11-15. 2 Projects, 1 mid term, 1 final. The quizzes are easy if you study the online quizzes he provides online. The two projects(mostly essays) are as well as the test/mid-term are somewhat harshly graded. Citations are very important and so is the textbook. Dr. Carroll ended up being great. Passionate, caring, etc!
Professor Carroll did a great job of making his class entertaining. He knows what he's talking about and knows how to make the class engaging. I would take his class again in a heartbeat. Make sure to do the practice quizzes, they pretty much guarantee you a good grade.
Very kind & caring. 3 quizzes, midterm, final, and participation. Values discussion and takes weekly grades for participation. Textbook helps but is extremely difficult to read without falling asleep; I survived without out it and used ppts online. Overall very caring and a solid choice but there are only 6 grades so be careful if you want an A.
He gave way too many writing assignments and is a super harsh grader!! Seriously, this is supposed to be a core class why does he make it so challenging?! TAKE AT YOUR OWN RISK
He is very knowledgable in this course and obviously cares about it a lot. He gives 3 quizzes, 2 projects, a midterm and a final. If you actually do the work and readings, then it won't be hard and will be engaging. If you don't put in the effort, then that is when he seems hard. Just pay attention and read, then you will be fine.
Would not recommend this class. Others seem to be grading the kindness of the professor and not the actual content of the class. Almost everything is graded strictly, especially the essays. This class is more difficult than an English class, even studying seems to be no help. I was misled reading these reviews, take with caution, avoid if possible
Professor Carroll made his lectures very clear and incorporated videos and activities that made them interesting. I received a C only because of my work ethic but otherwise he was a great professor and was very nice. I would definitely take him again.
Professor Carroll is genuinely one of the nicest professors Ive ever had. He DOES give you everything you need to pass but he is very laid back in stressing the importance of the textbook. The practice quizzes are a MUST and he does grade the writing assignments strictly. Easy A If you brush over the textbook and show up.
Dr. Carroll is a wonderful prof, but if you are looking for an easy A- do NOT take him. He is a very tough grader, but you will learn a lot from this course. Overall, the course wasn't bad, just unnecessary discussion boards and a few too many essays.
You really have to put forth effort to make an A; Do the practice quizzes until you keep getting 100's, do the discussions and essays exactly as he asks. Discussion posts alone are 400 words, essays about 900+. He's the type to read your papers thoroughly and take off points for any little thing. 8 discussions, 5 quizzes with webcam, 3 essays.
I took him online and there were two writing assignments per week and the quizzes were incredibly difficult and used the intrusive lock down browser. I'm not sure how much of this was his idea because KSU has been forcing history professors to assign ludicrous amounts of work to students for no reason. Online is not for most people.
Great guy, really passionate on the subjects he teaches. Go to class, and make sure you take his practice quizzes, they are extremely helpful.
He is very judgmental. He picks favorites and if you are not one of them he gives you bad grades. His class consists on lectures everyday and if you miss one class you will be completely lost. He also is a very tough grader especially when grading papers. I definitely would not recommend taking him for this class because you will probably not pass.
Professor Carrol is a headache. This is one of the hardest courses I've taken in my life. I would not recommend anybody taking this class ever !!!!! It definitely messes with your mental health.
The online version of his History class was tedious tightrope walk due to his snarky attitude that your work must reflect his ideas and group discussion in which most people do not bother working until 11pm the day that it is due. If you write a well written argument opposing his opinion expect getting Cs, but poorly written reflecting his idea: B.
His lectures are actually interesting. Most of the class is discussion. Theyre pretty easy. However The quizzes are lockdown browser and there were a few bigger writing assignments. you will need a textbook but all in all he grades nicely. I would take him again.
One of my favorite professors and cares about you. He doesn't regurgitate the textbook because he actually teaches you. He does require you to participate in class, but it's for your own benefit. I wasn't doing well in the class until I started to participate.
I highly recommend Dr. Carroll. He is very thorough with his lectures. If you have any questions he is there to help and responds surprisingly quick. Don't wait till the last minute to do your assignments, do them fairly early so you can evaluate your own writings. Also read your book and take notes to go over later. Have fun with the course!
His class is the one I look most forward to. He had weekly 5 question quizzes (which can be hard). He listens to his students' concerns. He gives extra credit, drops your lowest quiz, and rounds your grade up a point for good attendance. There is a role-playing game that helps you make friends, but it can make or break your grade so participate!
I feel conflicted. Professor Carroll is a fantastic teacher who is incredibly passionate about his work, and every lecture is nothing short of fascinating. I'd give him 5/5 if it weren't for the IMMENSE slew of work that he assigns--even in core class standards. While the textbook is free, it's horribly organized and you WILL fall asleep reading it
Professor Carroll is very knowledgable and passionate about History, but as a STEM major I found his class difficult. There was a role-play game that messed my grade up because I was not very involved in it so keep that game in mind.
I really enjoyed professor Carroll. His lectures are great, and he will work with you if you have concerns. However, the assessments are very difficult, and there is a lot of weekly work. The textbook is mandatory, and almost impossible to navigate, but his lectures are amazing. If you are ready to work hard, you will succeed in this class.
The tests were pretty easy if you did the study guides and the final project isn't as bad as I thought it would be. He is easy to communicate with, not to mention very nice. The only thing that was bad was the amount of quizzes (1-2 per week). I get its a lot of material but its also a prerequisite class. Overall, he was a pretty great professor.
Overall, a good professor but as a dual enrollment student this was extremely hard. It ruined my mental health a lot. Never in my high school career have I made a C but this class was something different do not take him. Gives you a a lot of work with little explanation.
For the group project, he said our project was good and didn't need any major changes. After turning the the final project (25% of the grade), he failed us in the project with a 57. Never seen a professor who gives so bad feedback. We had gotten good reviews from our peers as well He just cancelled one of our tests in the middle of the semester.
For youre own sanity, DO NOT take this class. Ive always had all As and his class was the first time I didnt get an A. If theres another option I suggest you take it.
Extremely unclear grading criteria. Grades what he feels like. The homework quizzes are too much for an introductory course. I usually dont attend my classes but boy, you wont pass if you skip. Avoid at all costs!
Dr. Caroll has been by far my fav prof at KSU. Innovative online lectures, interesting course material, supplementary learning material, extra credit, and NO ESSAYS! Watch the lecture videos & at least skim the readings, you'll do good. During my busy weeks I went through a week's worth of studying in a day and got 80 or 100 on the 5 question quiz.
Dr Carroll is a great professor. There are a lot of assignments, but he does his best to make you understand the content. He is open to feedback and is a very caring person. He wants you to succeed. It is very lecture heavy, but he is a cool guy. Skipping probably won't help your grade.
Professor Carroll is most likely my favorite professor. He is very understanding, and is willing to work with you if you show that you care. His tests are very easy, as well as his quizzes. The hardest part of this class was the primary source quizzes, but there were only a few. He is the professor that you miss when you leave. 10/10.
He has an expectation of how long and thorough he wants the discussion board to be. You have to cite his lectures and/or the textbook. There's a quiz with a discussion and the quiz sometimes doesn't align with what was said in the lectures. No study guide and when students asked for help to get better grades he said the academic center was open.
He started the semester with a history game where we all got to play historical figures and argue our points, for extra credit. He really knows the material and was available to answer any questions we had about the timeline. Most in-class projects are group assignments, but he is willing to let you work alone, if you prefer.
teacher cares and a good person. Understand students and curves if needed. 3 major test with multiple quiz. has a cool game that is a part of grade easy class take it.
RUN!!! don't take his class if you have ADHD/ADD, He will try to fail you & report you for cheating off of a small suspicion. He has no compassion & is very generic. If he cant be compassionate though the screen he should be teaching in the 21'st century. if you don't have time to fight SCAI then don't take this class. RUN
Don't Run. Really not a bad professor at all. Very organized and gave many opportunities to improve your grade. Fair and respectful. Take him for Post modern History.
This professor wants something very specific for all his assignments and does not specify what he wants. He will provide feedback on all his assignments, but they are broad and unhelpful. He says you can miss so many class periods without failing you. But God forbid you miss any days and you will lose points on an assignment done in class. Run
Fred is an amazing professor. He is proficient when it comes to all of the course material. The hardest part of the course was the 2 primary source analyses, where we were given a choice of 2 documents to write about for each PSA and then had to summarize and provide historical context. Make sure to read the textbook if you want to pass the quizzes
This class is very heavy on written assignments and discussion boards that are graded very harshly. The criteria may be met but he will deduct points and give bizarre and unclear feedback. Weekly quizzes, and 3 exams. I would not take this class if you are wanting to add an easy, stress-free class to your schedule.
Class is graded based upon discussion posts, weekly quizzes (no lockdown), primary source analysis papers (3), and exams (3, lockdown). The primary source papers take up 45% of the grade, whereas each of the exams are weighted 10% each. Lecture videos relate directly to quiz/exam content.
He confuses me because sometimes if you do extra work or put in extra effort he will give extra credit, but is unclear as to what he would like specified in essays etc.
Honestly not sure why there are so many negative reviews. Prof. Carroll's class was the only one I genuinely cared about and put effort into. The primary source analysis grades are not that difficult just a definitely long. I found him to be a knowledgable and understanding professor. But don't take his class unless you plan to put in the work.
I had this professor last semester and I hated the class. He will give you an assignment to work on, refuses to give any helpful resources to make things easier, and he harshly grades you on each assignment. On top of that, there are so many group projects. If you're someone with social anxiety, be warned: participation is required.
Where do I begin. For a history class be ready to write more essays than an English course as it makes up the majority of your grade. I have never met a teacher/professor who has been so strict and heavy on grades until I met him. I am taking this class in hopes to get credit but boy he is not making it easy.
Prof. Carroll makes the survey of US history class unnecessarily hard by assigning essay style papers every weekend heavily focusing on citations/info from multiple sources, assigning group projects almost every week, and grading tediously. That being said, attendance is mandatory, and beware if you have social anxiety, you will dread this class.
He literally made all of his assignments unnecessarily hard and graded really harshly, terrible
Carroll is one of the toughest professors I've had. When I saw that reviews saying that he was a tough grader I didn't think anything of it, since I've had professors that were "tough graders". Carroll is a harsh grader 100%. Never once did a get an A on a paper or assignment.
He gave quizzes that had unlimited tries so I got 100's on all of those and that was nice. He grades very harshly, I genuinely tried to improve my historical context responses but got the same feedback even though I had improved. Other than that he did give good lectures that were not too boring.
If u hate writing essays and doing group projects, BEWARE!! Every week it's a new paper and he grades them very tediously. He makes this class way harder than it needs to be. If you have no other options you'll be fine its just a lot of unnecessary hassle.
He's the last professor I'd choose for history. He doesn't grade by his rubric. If you think your writing is good he'll humble you if it's not up to his standards. There will be a paper or discussion post every week. He's a very tough grader. I just wouldn't recommend taking him for any class. He makes history class way harder than it should be.
Carroll is one of the hardest graders I have ever seen. if you pick the multiple choice test, you won't see what you got wrong and the written test is graded horribly. He has made this course so difficult and hardly gives any feedback on the papers you write. I would not recommend him to anyone, especially if history is not your major.
He's a very tough grader. His prompts for the discussion were often unclear, and it was difficult to know what he wanted. I suggest reaching out and working that out with him if you want to at least get a decent grade. Exams also requires lockdown browser with webcam!
He is super helpful and his lectures contain lots of information plus you have access to all of the powerpoints. I used them to write notes on. Use that information for your assignments and projects. Missing a lecture or several could really hurt your grade.
Not the best teacher to take for history. The first thing is tough grader. If your writing is not the best, I would recommend you not to take him. Most of his assignments are about writing and the ones that are not are about presenting in front of the class. If you're shy don't take the class too. He takes points off if you don't present.
The thing I liked the most about Professor Carrol was that his lectures were to the point. Most history teachers want to go on tangents, but not Carrol. His feedback was helpful, and if you put in lots of effort into his class, you will find it rewarding. He was also a caring person. He answered all my questions during and after class respectfully.
He said we would be able to use notes for tests...test comes around and it isn't open note at all. Tests will be on lockdown browser with a camera recording you while you are testing. Good luck.
He has a genuine passion for History and is very knowledgeable. That being said, he is pretty brutal when it comes to grading. You must put your best foot forward in this class and ask many questions because he likes things to be specific. This class honestly helped me improve my writing and public speaking but you must work hard if you want an A.
He genuinely is a good professor. Lots of group pptx projects. The tests are based on lectures. He posts the PowerPoint but they arent very detailed so go to class. The majority of the homework is reading from the textbook. If you struggle on a test, you can go over it with him; sometimes, he will change the grade (even if it's the wrong answer).
Professor Carroll is very knowledgeable about history and his lectures were wonderful. I took him online and his class consists of weekly quizzes (which have unlimited attempts), discussion boards, three primary source analysis, and three exams. He gives feedback and as long as you put in the work, you'll be fine.
Do not take this professor
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. No matter what I do he ALWAYS accuses me of cheating. His lectures and what we read don't make the exams any easier. I'm going into my 3rd year of college and this the first professor I genuinely do not like at all.
HORRIBLE grader. thought it would be easy since quizzes are unlimited attempt but they are only worth 10% of the grade as opposed to the 30% of your grade that test are worth and 40 % of your grade that discussions are worth which he has absolutely NO clear criteria for grading. the feedback doesn't follow the rubric and is wildly confusing.
The work load provided to students weekly is massive. When it comes to exams, he is a little broad on what specifically to study due to him wanting us to focus on the lectures but the exams don't really match up with the lectures. Can be a little passive aggressive at times via email.
Took his online class and thought history would be a chill summer class. You gotta read the textbook because his lectures don't go over whats on tests. You got discussions and movie analysis in which he is a picky grader. Overall wasn't a fun time and dropped him.
Professor grades extremely tough, Lectures for studying are good and concise, however if you don't do well on the tests there is virtually no way to get an A in the class (I got at least an 85 on every test and a 100 on the majority of other assignments and managed to finish with a 88 in the class). No extra credit opportunities are provided.
Teaches differently: Gives homework to study for the upcoming week, then quizzes on Monday & spends the rest of the week on that subject. Fun roleplaying activity about the declaration of independence. Tests/Quizzes need to be studied for. Some of the questions were irritatingly specific to multi-page documents. Has a good & laidback personality.
Be prepared for group work because thats what most of the class is. The other half is reading and quizzes. As a professor he is very knowledgable when he does lecture but as a whole I was not a huge fan of the class and the group work was very irritating and overshadowed the whole class
do not take unless you are ready to be graded by test only.... "oh the quizzes are open note and so easy"... and they count for next to nothing. tough grader. and don't even try to cheat you will be reported to SCAI at the drop of a dime and given a zero if you try to fight it and a 50 if you don't.
Lectures rarely. Lots of group work and quizzes. LOTS of reading each week. Tough exams, and a tough grader.
this class is less about learning and more like wasting an hour each period goofing off with strangers on a bunch of unnecessary group activities. the professor tries to make the classroom interactive, but in doing so, forces students to engage in meaningless exercises, using up all the class time that could have been spent on providing lectures.
DO NOT TAKE!!!! He does not lecture at all and most of the class is him trying to get you to be "interactive". He can be passive aggressive when you aren't doing anything with your group even though we finished the assignment. Find another professor because he will just give you a headache.
He is a really caring teacher. After exams he always lets us give feedback on how he can be abetter instructor and he will actually make changes depending on what majority of the class states. We have group quizzes after an indiv quiz, so that helps if you don't do well on ur individual quiz at times. test can be hard so make sure u study
I won't advice to take his course.
DON'T TAKE HIM!!! HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD
I don't think I learned anything in this class because all we did was group activities (which rarely taught me anything). He tries a bit too hard to make class engaging, but I think having actual lectures and fewer group activities would be more helpful. Also, the weekly readings are hard to understand. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this professor.
Fred Caroll is a shill for the university and would accuse your dead grandmother of cheating if he could. Not to mention the antiquated setup and guidelines of his class. I'm a senior and it genuinely felt like I was a high school junior in A.P. U.S. History all over again. Save yourself the time and effort by not taking this guy.
The Professor is fine I guess. However, the grading system is what can only be described as sadistic. You could be 100% perfect on everything, but say you flop on one single test. Well too bad for you, your whole grade is now whatever letter grade that flopped test is.
DO NOT TAKE. He had us roleplay as enslaved people in 1776 and we are coming up on a roleplay as Native Americans in the 1800s next week. He takes your LOWEST grade in the class and makes it your overall grade. Acts nice in person, is not forgiving or helpful if your grades slip. Please do not be fooled. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD.
AVOID Fred Carroll at all costs. His grading scale sets you up for failure from day one. Your lowest grade becomes your overall grade, period. None of the prac. quizzes match the actual tests & they are worded terribly. He wants to make you fail his class!!! Coming from somebody who is a straight A & B student who's just an iffy test taker. AVOID
Genuninely the worst professor I've ever had. His grading scale messes up your grade horribly. He offers things called "tokens" to make up for bad grades and stuff, but he only offers those because of how often you get a bad grade, because he doesn't prepare you at all for the exams. He never teaches yet expects you to know what's on the exams.
He wanted us to fully understand the historical significance of the material by making a role-play. He also gave opportunities for remediation, but at the cost of 4 tokens. His grading scale is set up where you have to have all A's to receive an A in the class. If you received a B on one assignment, you would have an overall B in the class.
Fred Carrol is a decent guy and passionate about history. LOTS of reading and pop quizzes (mostly on Fridays). A lot of group work. The grading scale is RIDICULOUS and sets you up for failure. Attendance is mandatory. If you put in the work and A LOT OF TIME, you will be fine. Don't take this class if you are looking for an easy A!!!!!!
