Best Class ever. Take it if you want an interesting, intelligent and fun class.
Prof. Feldman, as corney as it sounds, makes learning fun!
Great Class, Looks like Mr Rogers!!!

he's most certainly HIGHLY entertaining!

Funny guy, grading can be tough.
Worst teacher I've ever had, can be funny but most of the time is very rude and unhelpful.
he's very funny, but doesn't like creativity, and is a little full of himself. all work has to be done EXACTLY his way
It's a very easy class as long as you go to review sessions. He is really funny, class can be boring but its easy. what else do you want?
Excellent class, fun teacher, fairly easy. The only people that say they don't like the class are the ones that don't pay attention and are failing so they hold their laziness and stupidity against Fred when he's really an awesome professor
The only reason this class is bearable is because his TA's know what they are talking about. This class is boring, and it takes Fred forever to convey one point. I do not find him to be funny either.
Fred is awesome. Class is very very interesting. I think everyone should take it just to get a different perspecitve on things we do every day... if you know what i mean!
Have to memorize everything, tough graders. TAs are more helpful than Fred.
You have to memorize everything... He reminds me of Mr. Rogers.
fred is an awesome prof. and the classes are easy. people giving him bad reviews are non-majors that don't understand philsophy and can't grasp the content matter....it's really not that tough.

awesome class, awesome prof. everyone below me who is whining about fred shooting them down needs to stfu, cause EVERY SINGLE PERSON i ever heard good ole' fred feldman "shoot down" in class just made a stupid comment and deserved to have it cor

nice guy, class makes no sense
Classes are a snore..but all it is is memorization..only need to go to review sessions to do well on test..
The class is alright, all you gotta do is go to review session and memorize it the night before. Kinda a lot to memorize in one night. The guy shoots down people in class and its funny. People make dumb ass comments so its good that he shoots them down

Like someone else said, this class is really boring. Sure, if you wan't an easy A, all you have to do is memorize a bunch of definitions. For those of you who wan't to actually learn about ethics, go to another school.
Nice dry humor
Good class if you want to get a feel for ethics. You def need to attend lectures and discussions if you want to get a good grade, not because the material is hard, its just something you cant really learn on your own. Tests and homework are straightforw

This guy is amazing. He's so smart and hilarious that it blows my mind. I would and do recommend this class to anyone and everyone. It's the reason I'm taking more philosophy courses next semester.
NICE GUY - tries really hard to make everything interesting and is really funny. Tries to make boring material fun- and actually does ! Good class.
Memorization. If you take notes or go to the website and memorize those before the exams you can get an A. His TA dan was soooooo nice and helpful. Hes a funny guy, or at least he trys. Easy A.
this class was a great time, professor feldman is a really nice guy and he uses great examples to help illustrate his points. take this class if you get a chance!
Nice guy. Pretty boring. I can't even tell you what I learned, but the T.A.'s are really helpful. The review sessions give you word for word the answers to his tests, so just go to those and you'll do well.
ALL AROUND NICE GUY....Ethics is allright, just agree with evrything he says and it is easy to get an a....worht taking just cause he is a nice guy...introduce yourself to him early on and he'll be extra nice to you...don't disagree with him in class
Not too bad, a bit boring at times. Kept it rather comical every now and then with his stories and whatnot. Seems overly liberal and integrates that mindset into his teaching. Can be a bit too critical in grading exams (form, structure, etc.. graded heavily).
awesome professor, awesome class. if only he were a few years younger i'd...
I really thought this class would be boring, I took it because there were only 3 homeworks and 3 quizzes for the class. But I've ended up really liking it. It's very very easy as long as you go to every lecture. Pretty hard grading on tests, but a great class and a great prof.
horribly boring. grades really harshly. strays off topic alot.
This class is so unbelievably boring... every class Feldman would spend forever slowly going over what you went over the last lecture. The grading is ridiculous. Don't take it if you don't have to.
Philosophy is a very interesting subject, but Feldman will make you hate it. Very disrespectful of students, and turns issues at the core of human concerns into an analytical game divorced from reality. If you don't want to play his game, you are screwed. Take ethics in the summer or at one of the four colleges.
Boring lecture, he thinks he is funny but he is just kind of old. If you like memorizing fatcs that you will NEVER use in life then take this class. I didn't gp tp any lectures....but you HAVE to go to discussions. Go to dicussions and test review with TA's and you should do good. They are very very picky about test answers. The test setups are

Grading is harsh. Feldman himself makes the lectures pretty funny to keep it interesting.
Ok, this is an intro survey class with 300+ people, most of which are boring, most of which only touch the suface, most of which are taken for the credits only. All I say, is that is has been 12 years since I took Feldman's class and I still quote him today. It was one of the most useful classes I took there. He was funny, easy to understand, engaged when you had questions and knew the job of teaching a survey class is to engage the student in the topic, not pretend he is higher than that. Good job!
Too proud of himself
The class is easy if you just go to the review sessions and write exactly what he tells you. I rarely go to class and I have an A. Easy way for people who suck at art to fill the art requirement
Not a gimme, but still fairly easy for a GenEd. Lectures are boring for the most part, but Freddie is more than capable of getting you to laugh every now and then.
Fred is a good guy, tries to get a laugh out of you, sometimes tries too hard. Extremely tedious grading, but material is easy, just make sure you know it word for word. Material is useless to any non-phil major, but easy grade for GenEd.
I liked his class. So... what if he is not funny? It's not his job to make you laugh. The class was fun and his teaching style is paced well. Some info here and there, and breaks where he would just toy around. It doesn't feel like class in my opinion, just something for fun. Very easy and simple... A easy grade in my opinion.
basically my favorite class. way to go fred!
You have to love Fred. He's hilarious and very personable. A good teacher; but sometimes a little too dry and mechanical in his approach to the material. Exams are based almost entirely on class material and readings are sometimes boring; often tests you on his own theories. However, if you approach him, will devote unlimited time to helping you.
Fred doesn't assign anything that is beyond undergrads at all, you just have to be willing to put in the hours of work. But it does pay off.
easy class, i think fred has taught this class so many times that he is the best at it...he really knows how to teach and make one understand, tedious yet easy assignments and tests...definitely worth taking and it counts as two geneds..!
Best professor I've had at Umass. He makes you want to go to class because he's such a great teacher, but you really only need to go to the reviews before the test and they go over EVERYTHING. take this class, seriously
he's awesome
Fred is awesome. Attendance at class is not required, but fun to go to. His dry humor makes you laugh, he's very clear about the material and when things are due. The homework and tests are very fair and the TA's are helpful. Take this class! Go to the review sessions and you'll get a B.
For an intro class you would expect it to be designed to cater more to non-Philosophy major's expectations. Not at all. The TA was nice, but did not clear up any confusion. Feldman could not understand why I was confused by his vague teaching and after feeling belittled, I dropped this class. Leave this class/professor to Philosophy majors.
If you are a phil major or understand any rules of LOGIC then DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I am, and it was the BY FAR the worst class i've ever taken; makin it the hardest to go/sit thru. The class is about ethics, but you have to accept arbitrary social norms as absulte truths or you wil fail like i did.Lot of people recomended it&him to me: I DO NOT!
Great teacher. Teaches the logic you need to use in order to prove/disprove. Only annoying part of this class tends to be the liberal weirdos who get offended that someone would argue an ethical question in an ethics class, even though they are going to disprove it in 5 minutes anyway. 3 easy homeworks. 3 simple essay/short answer type tests.
Difficult for an intro course. Attending class is an absolute must, as most notes are not provided online. Definitely not the sort of class you want to have in a 300-person lecture hall; better in smaller groups. Ideas are typically shot down by prof. or by students...best just to remain quiet and take notes. Essay style exams.
Great teacher, he's sooo funny, very entertaining. He makes kids save their "philosophical ideas" for discussions which is a plus. The class though is kind of hard because there are only three exams which are graded intensely and require a ton of memorizing. Recommend to Philosophy majors only.
fred is a good prof. dont question it. he expects disciplined thought but is most of the time bombarded with unfounded accusations of presenting partial arguments when in fact he is being legit analytcal. the pseudo lectures are well-paced and clearly organized. the handouts are not perfectly coordinated with lectures but it is no detriment. the assignments are easy. the tests are fair. and the TAs are very helpful. a very good intro to ethics.
Fred is amazing. You have to show up to lectures to really understand the material, but he makes you WANT to show up to lectures. HIGHLY recommended. Phil 100 is a really interesting class, too.
amazing guy. hilarious. entertaining. easy class- recommend for gen ed. take it.
This class was by far my worst class. I dont think I know anyone who found it interesting and on top of it the grade is determined by only 3 awful test and nothing else.
Fred and his staff are friendly, likable, and helpful. Lectures are engaging and funny. Three long and challenging 'quizzes', one possible make-up 'quiz', three relatively easy homeworks. Picky grading (never unfair). Homework readings are explained in lecture. Go to discussion every single week to pass.
An excellent introduction into the study of philosophy. An engaging and amusing lecturer who is perfectly willing to help any student out who needs it. His TAs are also wonderful. I highly recommend this class for an easy and interesting Gen. Ed.
Excellent, Excellent teacher. Makes you want to attend class. He is hysterical, and presents the material clearly. He constantly encourages you to seek extra help if you need it, and the TAs are extremly helpful, as well as nice and engaged in discussion. MUST TAKE for a gen ed.
The Man.
One of the funniest teachers i have ever had. makes class interesting and keeps you awake. memorization is key but only three tests and three hws not bad at all!
Feldman is smart and engaging. Philosophy is definitely my favorite class.
there were some things in the class that were interesting but overall i found it to be a waste of time. He never really taught anything and didnt give good feedback during class. the tests were ridiculous and the grading wasnt very well done. if you want to take a philosophy class do not take this class with fred feldman
I am a biology major and a jr. and this was the most difficult class I've ever taken. There are 3 exams that your final grade is determined by and nothing taught in class is relevant to the exams. And if you try to ask a question in class, he will say you are wrong, and wont answer you're questions. I don't advise taking this class.
I personally liked the guy. He has a good sense of humor and will crack jokes to keep every light hearted. He is also very approachable and personable, and he answers email quickly whether it is an urgent question or just a funny story. Tests were tedious with some nit-picky grading but overall not that bad. Dont regret taking the course at all.
I can honestly say I did not learn a single thing in this class and never opened my book. But, Fred is a great guy and is funny and interesting to listen to. Attendance is not mandatory at all and review sessions tell you everything you need to know for the tests. Easy A, must take.
Awesome Teacher. Take this class
Easiest class...alive. I cannot believe these morons say that his exams are hard. It is memorizing a bunch of technical terms and some theories. You barely have to go to lecture since he just veers off with stories. Attend all discussions and REVIEW SESSIONS. The reviews tell you everything you need to know about the exam
Nice & funny but im an honors student and only have a D. Waste of time.Have to write down technical terms word for word on tests and does not matter what your opinions are on anything.Encouraged to share thoughts in class but it does not matter when it comes to tests and homework.Don't need to go to lectures, just discussions and review sessions.
Tests will be hard if you do not study but if you take the time to simply memorize what the study guide tells you do anybody can get an A. grading on homework is a bit tough though. Fred is hilarious, he has such an interesting way of speaking and although you could definitely do well with out going to class his humor is worth it. Awesome = Fred
Fred is a professor that clearly has a passion for what he's doing. Not everyone will like him, but he has a consistent and effective way to get his point across. Not the easiest class I've ever taken, but definitely one of the most interesting. Lots of memorization, but it's reasonable to get an A with enough effort.
Great teacher. he's hilarious, and he keeps the material interesting with his charm. I would probably skip a lot of classes since i'm not that into philosophy, but thanks to fred feldman i haven't wanted to skip one class.
Hes like a version of Larry David
I chose this class based on RateMyProfessors. Big mistake. This class was definitely not an easy A. Fred tries WAY too hard to be funny and liked and he is definitely NOT funny. The people who actually enjoy this class are those brown nosers in class that always raise their hand to say something useless. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED!
For a 100 lvl course, its challenging simply bc if you do not have the notes and do not attend discussions studying for the test will be very difficult, if you dont study for the test you are completely screwed. All that aside,Fred has a wonderful sense of humor and classes are not even hard to sit through. Homeworks are graded obnoxiously hard tho
Fred's the man, his class was fun and easy, but "Intro. to Philosophy" isn't as thought inspiring and about debates as I thought, it's more about learning the basics of how "proper" arguments work.
The class could have been good if the teacher didn't suck. Absolutely the worst class I've taken at UMass and it's entirely the teacher. Feldman is terrible.
Fun class! Fred always tried to crack jokes (even though they're not funny). A lot of interesting views. GO TO CLASS! If you do that and study, the tests are simple. Plus the TA's host a review session which gives you every answer. Good Gen Ed.
Fred's hilarious. Not very efficient with class time, but go to class. Everything on the quizzes is gone over 2 nights before, and instead of a final you can take over one of the three quizzes. Great class.
In all honesty, it's time for Fred to retire. Maybe the first time he told them, years ago, his jokes were funny. Maybe at one time his voice was a little less drawling (this is highly doubtful.)Maybe at one time each and every class wasn't rigidly structured in the same inefficient way. He's a good guy, but he can't bridge the generation gap well.
Class was boring, Yeah, sometimes Fred is funny but he doesn't use time well and goes on about unimportant stuff. This class is all about formatting arguments and memorizing useless definitions. You don't need to go to class as long as you go to review sessions. For the test you need to memorize EVERYTHING. It's hard... Take something else.
Hardest class I have taken. Material is so boring and useless that I have a hard time studying. Grading is very subjective because quizzes are all written in blue book. Don't be fooled by the "Intro" to Philosophy like I did. I never got a grade lower than a B+ and I got a D in the class.
Feldman was a great teacher. He was very funny, which kept class interesting. You have to attend the discussions and the lecture in order to get a good grade in the class. There are 3 tests and 3 homework assignments, no final exam. You are allowed to take over your lowest exam grade.
One of the most boring and pointless classes I have ever taken. It takes forever to get through one topic; most of the information you need to know is covered in the last 5 minutes of class. Attendance is taken at discussions. You have to study for tests, and go to the review because they tell you everything that's on the test.
This class is pretty difficult for a 100 level class. There are 3 exams and 3 homework assignments. Had to memorize dozens of definitions and "learn" how to format arguments. Half of class lectures were spent on administrative announcements and the other half was just reading definitions. Somewhat interesting but not worth your time.
Such a snuggly guy. Attempts to make jokes to keep things interesting. No real need to go to class because he veers off topic a lot. Review sessions and discussion are the most important. I wouldn't consider this course easy, but Fred is a nice guy who loves what he does. Give the class a try.
You learn a lot, but it's done through the rigid structure of argument analysis and evaluation. You do have to memorize definitions, but trust Fred's forty years of experience and just go with it. It's all for the greater purpose of understanding truly fascinating questions. I personally had a blast. Fred is a wonderful, hilarious, wise man.
Fred is a good guy and his lectures are made less boring when he says funny things. A lot of memorization though, go to discussion so your TA can help you learn what you need. Three exams all on Friday nights, but if you actually care about doing well in the class then it won't matter.
I graduated a few years back and have since been through grad school. I decided to rate Professor Feldman simply because he is the best professor I have had. He is smart, incredibly talented at teaching and inspired me to major in Philosophy. Everyone should experience a class with Professor Feldman.
Entertaining class, but boring material, couldn't keep my eyes open. Prof. Feldman did not let me take final exam due to medical illness. His words to me were, "that's too bad son, you can always retake the class". yea no thanks.
