class seemed easy in the beginning but he grades all homework based on whether the answer is right or wrong..he does not give partial credit..and he doesnt seem to explain the labs throroughly..open book midterm and final..make sure to turn in all work...
He wastes time by talking too much. You dont have enough time for labs usually. You have to be very specific and write a lot on lab questions.
BEWARE!!! Grades everything. Must ans all lab questions. Take Figueroa instead... Like everyone say's AVOID GARCES!!
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! If you wanna learn take another teacher
Worst chem prof there is. Work unorganized, get tests and work just 1 day before major exam/test, really unclear in work and in solutions to any problems. Take another prof. if your going to take chem 201. Stay away from Garces!!
Enthusiastic teacher...could work on being a little more clear on his instructions. I never know what page we're on. VERY helpful if you just ask. Not too hard, but you will actually have to work in this class.
If you want to have an easy time in chem 201, don't take Garces. Lots of work, but he is really nice, if not always 100% clear, and will always help you out if you go and seek it.
i have him for lab. he gives out A LOT of work for just one unit. but he's a very enthusiastic teacher and if you ever need help or re-explanations he's always willing to help you out. hard to get an A in the class tho.
He doesn't suck but he makes you work for your grade, but he is ALWAYS willing to help you out. It's a ton of work and takes up 80% of your time.
this class is tons of work! there's webassign homework and take home portion of tests. in lab, he makes you do a prelab which includes a pictorial diagram and typewritten discussion. he tests are also very hard! plus, he talks to much!
I wouldn't take him again;was not helpfull. Grades too harsh. Take Hoeger instead!
i heard his internet class is way hard. take his classes on campus instead. tough grader.. but he grades on the curve which helps you... A LOT. ended up getting a B in his lab class on campus
He's very nice, and helpful. If your major is related to Chem, take with him. He will give you a strong foundation for chemistry.
Chem 100 online is hard, but if u do everything u pretty much get a B or C. rating seems bad cuz we dont see him much and definitely some lab questions made no sense. However u can pull off a C with a buncha good BS and know ur book. 60% is a "C"
hardest teacher i had. didn't learn anything. retook chem at city college. unless you are willing to devote a majority of your time to this class i suggest taking it with another teacher. take chem at city college dr kane is really good. i learned a lot
Dr Garces is really helpful teacher. His labs take a long time because he is always going over stuff from lecture. He is always willing to help you understand, you just need to be willing to do work.
Gives tons of work but it gives you a better understanding of the material. He's a very helpful and nice guy. Highly recommend. Very willing to help students.
He's a very nice teacher & very helpful but I think he style of teaching is a litlle FAST & he adds a lot of unrelated story that makes his lecture long & in the end makes his "topic" unclear. He does give you a lot of homeworks but he also gives you resources.
the BEST chem TEACHER. His class does take most of your time, but you learn so much! I hated chem but after Dr.G, I loved it! thinkin of changing my major! LoL
He SUCKS!
Chemistry is difficult to begin with. His classes took most of my time, but he is always willing to help. His lectures can sometimes be a lot, but his notes are always posted on his site. Really great guy, and makes chemistry super intresting even if it's not your cup of tea. dipset
This class is time consuming, specially with all the math involved in the chemical formulas. Fred is a Chemistry geek, he knows his stuff. Extremely helpful but very strict when turning assigments. Participation would help you a lot, try not to miss class. His on-campus lab class is super fun, I took the lecture on line and it was challenging.
Took this class online. Big mistake. Trust me, if you use this website like I do, don't take this class. Hindsight, all the previous comments are true, this class takes up ALOT of your time. I wish those people would have been more precise with the easiness scale, I would have avoided it. BTW, he has to help because the material is too hard.
Sweetheart of a guy... tough with the grades. He makes the hardest, longest, impossible tests. I think they're designed NOT to be completable in the time alloted. Even if you're taking the class on campus, consider it an online course. He does everything online!Lame! If you want an A-study like you would for the final all semester long.
very good & helpful teacher. didn't really study but still manage to get B. just make sure to attend his class and take notes on his lecture (test is based on his lecture and he usually hint his student)
He is a very good teacher, but grades really hard. His class is time consumming. Take his class if you want to learn and not care about the grade. Out of the whole class only one person got at A with a 89.6%.
very helpful, cute legs
Took the class as a intersession course. It was really hard. It was online too. He grades really hard too, and his test are hard. This class takes up lots of your time, and you need to make sure you start studying the 1st day you get there. Is very helpful though and will answer any of your questions. Take it online, he does everything online.
love the fold out extendable glasses. HOT!!!!!!!!!!!
great teacher. i loved it. very helpfull. always spend extra time forreviews, never makes you sounds stupid if you ask questions. and really cares that you know stuss , not just memorize. GREAT!!!!!!!!!
Very helpful. first half of course was much easier than last half. Do the HW. Gives lots of extra credit and answers your questions. Gives a lot of explanation. I was 97% going into the final, got 230/300 on it, ended up with a 93%. Not bad. Someone says he has cute legs, I checked & I think its true. But i dont nkow what makes legs cute
good teacher, make sure you study...and you will pass...took it as a intersession class before and had to make sure you stayed on top of things...but overall a great teacher!!
He is not understanding of anything else you have going on in your life like other classes or work. He never goes over the homework or tests in class, and all your homework and tests are online except your midterm and final. He does not teach for the slow learners. He does give good demenstartions in his class descusions. Good luck!!
great professor! he curves the grades based on overall class performance. sometimes hard & sometimes easy, but do the work & you'll prevail, not fail. he gives extra credits to bump your standing.
Chemisty is a tough subject, and Garces class is tough- lots of work and many concepts to learn. Garces is friendly, reasonable and helpful to students who ask for his help. If you need to have Chemistry Garces will give you a good foundation. Many people drop the class, maybe because they cant or dont want to put the time into it to succeed.
Garces is a really nice professor and I enjoyed his class. Even though I had him on-campus, all of the homework was done online through webct which I didn't really like. He is helpful and will give you a great introduction to many aspects and fundamentals of chemistry.
Prof. Garces is an awesome teacher! He is very helpful to any students who ask. He curves the overall grade. There is a lot of hard work involved but if you make the time for this class, put in all your effort, you will be fine.
Probably the most in depth and brutal class I have taken to date. It is possible to get a high A in the online class - but I am spending 35+ hours a week to do it. If you are taking chem for a transfer - may want a different prof. If you need more then one class, this is your guy - he will prepare you like no other prof at Miramar.
This is not an easy course but I believe Professor Garces does a very good job teaching it. He is always more than willing to try and help students understand via voluntary class reviews on Fridays or appointments during class hours. You have to be diligent about going to class and reading the book. I would take him again, I learned a lot.
DO NOT take this as an on- line class!! If you have a job and/or a life of any kind, it will be completely put on hold. He is a nice guy, but you will be so busy that you will not have time to actually absorb the subject. His materials are sloppy and disorganized, and his weak grasp of the English language is unacceptable for a college professor!
very helpful, take his class! you'll learn a lot!
He teachs pretty well but his quizes and exams are toughed. He also gives you a lot of works. I dont refer this class if you take it with another 3,4 classes, you wont have time for them
no no no! cant understand him; he's all over the place; doesnt give examples well; his tests have things on there he hadnt even mentioned in lecture; he spends more time confusing us making us grade eachothers quizzes, rather than letting us actually take the quiz. he doesnt even give the right answers afterwards! most hw is done online. dont take!
If you work full-time, are taking other classes, and/or have children/a significant other, definitely consider another professor. Garces' CHEM 100/100L online is a full-time job. Both classes are quite challenging. Some podcasts do not work & no studyguides for exams. Yes, he knows chemistry, but assumes everyone has the same understanding. BEWARE.
Terrible prof. teaching methods r ridiculous. he quizzes on stuff he never mentioned in lect & he's not helpful when u ask q's either. ignores emails & writes back rude comments when he does. all hw & most quizzes r online & he puts the most ridic time limits on them. for ex, he puts a qz up on thurs night & locks it sat @ 10pm. do NOT take him!!
Chem 201 is a tough class. It requires a lot of time and energy. Prof Garces' lecture and lab tests are quite difficult. You really have to know the material. He's very picky when it comes to lab reports so make sure you write them well. Overall I learned a lot from Prof Garces. He'll definitely prepare you for future chem classes.
As everyone has already stated, he is very strict on his grading, however, he is very helpful and knowledgeable. Great (demanding) teacher overall.
I can only speak for his online class but avoid him like the plague. Take T Toto instead. She cares. Its funny because at his orientation he was complaining about his attrition rate and how he wanted to fix it. Hellooooo, you have to participate in discussions and answer questions if you want a successful online class.
I'm currently taking his online class. BIG MISTAKE! He is absolutely USELESS! You ask him a question and he does not answer promptly (well he doesn't answer period). Instead he gives you a RUDE response regarding something else that doesn't apply. This man has no business teaching. He may be smart, but he CANT teach.
Do not take his class at all. I am taking his Lab (1 credit class which means it does almost nothing to your GPA) online and the work is insane. We had to purchase $100 worth of lab equipment, which is a waste. His labs take forever, his instructions are impossible to read because he has the grammar of a three year old. Total waste of time.
1st off I love Chemistry. I love my lecture class under Toto. But Garces lab is horrible. Any good review here was done by him or his life mate, not by a real student. Bad Teachers do this. His questions make no sense. He needs someone to review his work before he posts it. His grammar is really bad, but he wants your chemistry work to be perfect.
he is very hard and rarely helping student
very hard and dont understand what he says
Does anyone take this class serious. I mean it's only a 1 credit class. Which means if you get a C and get an A in lecture you still get 3.5. So why spend all of this time on this worthless class. Remember lecture is the important class that affects your GPA, lab only requires a C to move on. So don't waste your time trying to get an A.
Stay away by all means. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Worse teacher in the History of teaching, cares more about failing students then teaching.
He's harsh at grading. I did want to drop his class but it got better. I would recommend this class in person because you do need to buy a lab kit. The videos help, so watch them. The online course is a lot more tedious than in person. He's quick to answer when he's online. His random meetings held before tests help and watching lab in person.
Chemistry is a hard concept to learn. Dr. Garces used visual aids for lecture which really helped me instead of reading right out of the book. The tests are hard and there is alot of homework, but he is fair and gives second chances. Dr. Garces is an awesome teacher!
I took online 5 weeks course, it was tough with laborious work. Double work of writing lab book and enter the same in the internet. But Prof notes were helpful. You cannot expect any help from Prof online, need to go to college for answers & spend 3-4 hrs every week for review classes. You should b ready to spend your life and give enough time.
Chemistry is not a easy class for lots of American, because it requires strong math knowledge. Professor Garces is very helpfull and give the students lots of chance to earn extra credit. Occationally, i can get over 100% for this class. Anyway, this is a nice instructor and he tried his best to help the students and encourage them as i know.
hated him, listening to him makes me more confused
This is a really hard class. I think it would be difficult nomatter who is teaching. But prof. garces is very understanding and loves to help students suceed. If you go everyday and turn everything in and ask for help and dont drop, you will pass. I thought i was gonna get a C but he boosted me to a B. But it is very hard to get an A.
I don't understand why people rated him so poorly, these students were probably lazy and wanted their grade handed to them. Prof Garces class is challenging but if you need help, you can count on him! He will give you all the resources you need! If you want to take online CHEM, take him!
This class was interesting. Online homework and quizes were not that hard, since they were open book. At first this class is overwhelming because he has his own website and then Blackboard has a website, but ultimately you just need to go to the Blackboard site. He gave a lot of extra credit, and midterm and final we could use a cue card. Great class
Lab was a lot of work. Way more work than the class. Each week you had a 2-3 page activity and prelab due before lab. The lab assignments were very challenging. The key to getting a good grade is to double check with the prof when doing the lab assignment,to make sure you're answering the questions the way he wants them,so there's no surprises!
Garces was fun to listen to when he would say his personal stories, but difficult to understand when explaining the topic. If you are working full time take someone else or another class. Garces wants you to eat, breath and sleep chemistry. Too much work and he doesn't really help, and if he does he is extremely sarcastic and makes you feel dumb.
I LOVED HIM..I TOOK LAB AND LECT ONLINE. IT WAS DIFFICULT! YOU CAN SIT IN ON THE LECT IF YOU NEED HELP AND HE WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL. I RECOMMEND TAKING IT IN CLASS IF POSSIBLE. THE LAB IS A LOT OF WORK ONLINE SO PLAN ACCORDINGLY. DO ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT. YOU WILL BE HAPPY YOU DID IN THE END. ALL THE TESTS/QUIZZES ARE OPEN BOOK IN THE ONLINE CLASS.
Prof Garces is a great teacher he loves to talk chemistry and also shares his own personal experiences which relates to chemistry in some form. He also has a bit of humor and that he is extremely helpful at least for me though. Others laugh when he says number a b c etc.
Garces is obviously very interested and knowledgeable about chemistry, but he can't teach intro level chem very well. I came into his class knowing nothing about chem, and he assumes that you have prior knowledge. He puts trick questions into his homework and exams. He's difficult to follow and understand, and I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
Do not take him!!!! I am not lazy or afraid of hard work but he goes beyond that. Half the people dropped after the midterm and no one finished his midterm because it was so hard and long. His quizzes are also very difficult. He's hard to understand also. I repeat, do not take him, take someone else.
Prof Garces has a good energy. He's fairly excited to teach the subject. He offers a lot of help through different resources while being approachable and willing to help. I recommend taking advantage homework and any extra credit as his mid-term and final are hard. I went into the mid-term with 112% and finished with a low B. I recommend taking him
This guy is brilliant. I've never had a professor have such concise answers to all my questions before. This class is extremely difficult, but you'll be alright if you learn the instruments and show some enthusiasm. Very helpful, he easily works as hard as the students do. Lectures are boring as hell though.
Really wants people to learn and understand chem. he is probably the professor that is the most willing to help and answer questions that ive ever had. hard class but unbelievably good professor
It honestly feels like this dude ENJOYS taking points off of everything and making your grade suffer. In lab, i asked him before turning it in if i did it correctly, he said yes, it looks fine. When i got it back, it was written all over with things like "more details" and he took a lot of points off.
A very good professor. He covers the material thoroughly, takes questions in class, and has many online tutorials/resources. He also gives lots of extra credit assignments and keeps a spreadsheet with your points, so you know exactly what your grade is. But because he does this, he demands a lot of you. It's hard work, but very possible to get an A
The class is hard but Dr. Garces is a good professor to have. There were several extra credit opportunities and he held review sessions before every quiz or test. He's very helpful and makes things easy to understand. Study hard and you will make it through!
I took his online lecture/lab course and it was VERY difficult. There is so much work to do that you will not have time for any other classes! You have to buy your own lab kit for $100 and buy several household items that are required for the experiments. Save yourself from a headache by taking an on-campus chemistry course!
The lab manual that he wrote has several errors and just doesn't make any sense.
Nice guy, very knowledgeable. Unfortunately that doesn't translate to understandable teaching. His online hybrid class for Chem 100/100L takes MINIMUM 15-20 hours a week, NO JOKE. Chem will own your life, and you will be on your own learning it, his notes are zero help. Midterm/Final are insane. I got a good grade but was dying the whole semester.
Dr Garces is nice guy ,but he is awful pro. He wouldn't teach a lot. You will be on your own learning .Also his notes are zero help.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Professor Garces. He is everything a professor should be: passionate about the subject matter, brilliant, extremely responsive and VERY PATIENT. He ALWAYS replied to my emails the SAME day. He GENUINELY CARES about his students. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! ASK QUESTIONS! Email him! Go to Chem Help Room. Study! I heart Professor Garces!
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. All this guy wants to is showoff how much he knows. Well unfortunately it does not translate into good teaching. He expects you to know everything and expects you to learn it on your own. This class will rule your life if you take him. He is one of the worst professors I have ever had. I'm a third year student at SDSU.
Dr. Garces was wonderful. His class requires a good level of dedication, 15- 20 hours if you want to be successful. He is always willing to help via email or weekly help sessions. He updates grades regularly and offers multiple extra credit assignments. I am a history major and science is not my strong suit, but he made it fun and engaging.
If you know nothing about chemistry like me then do not take him! I will admit that he is nice person who clearly is passionate about what he does and he is willing to help when you don't understand. There was way to much homework and the test besides the online quizzes were all really hard and did not come from the notes. Chem will rule your life!
1/2 of class dropped. He is very unclear and changes dues dates last minute. Very harsh grading but does drop 2 assignments and 1 quiz. Dont ask him any questions, he treats you like you're stupid and does not help. Loses student work. Tests include thing he never talked about and expects you to be an expert even though it is intro to Chem.
DONT TAKE GARCES! More than half the class dropped b/c almost everyone was failing. At the end he curved my grade from a 50% to a 72% but he gives no feedback and he requires a lot of work with online prelabs and postlabs. He expects you to know all the material before going to lab and does a short extremely fast lecture for the next lab meeting
If you can avoid this professor, please do. If you are stuck having to take this class, please keep in mind that the midterm and final contain about 25% material that is not in the book, yet only in his notes. Print them all out and bring them in. Also, tread lightly if you have to point out something confusing in the course to him. He's arrogant.
He needs improvement. He's not organized, and he wrote the lab manual for Chem 100, which contains too many grammar errors. When he didn't have time to teach another topic, he told the class we're on our own. He uses Mastering Chemistry for homework, and it isn't great.
Thank you Dr. Garces. I wish I could go back to chem 152 and take your class of chem 201. You are my most favorite Professor of chemistry. I wasn't lucky because I didn't take the class. Thanks you for the book that you gave me. Peace:)
Surprisingly, I learned a lot more from his lab than my lecture class which was taught by a different professor. He may seem intimidating at first, but as long as you know know what you're doing then he won't be as hard on you. Professor Garces really wants his students to know the material and appreciate chemistry both in and out of class.
This was a difficult course, but I learned a lot. Dr. Garces was disorganized at times, and his tests were hard, but he offers a lot of extra credit and curves the grade at the end. Definitely buy the book, do the assigned reading BEFORE lecture, and buy his printed lecture notes. Expect to put in 10-15 hours a week just for lecture. Very doable.
Garces is an AMAZING professor. At first I was scared to take this as a summer class, but he made it very interesting, it was still difficult though. He is very knowledgable no doubt about it, and he truly wants the best for his students. You don't find a prof like that too often. Work hard, show you want to succeed, and you'll pass with an A!
I loved this professor - extremely helpful, available, engaging, and sometimes funny. I would say his tests are pretty fair, but some questions test your true understanding of the concepts. Completing the homework definitely helps, and going to office hours or asking him during lab, as he will take the time to explain a concept again.
Anyone taking chemistry needs to know there is always a great deal of work involved regardless of level. This professor was clearly intelligent/passion in the subject matter, and was easy to reach. However, any information on assignments or projects was very hard to decipher to figure out what was needed, and last minute items/changes were a given.
Prof Garces was is an amazing teacher. Lectures were really interesting, and he always makes himself available if you need extra help. If you put in work and show up to class, you will succeed. Take him!
I was worried to take an online class (especially chemistry) but this class was rather easy. Weekly dashboard assignment and quizzes are simple if you just do the reading. Clear on what is expecting of you, just do your work guaranteed pass!
Garces is clearly extremely intelligent and knows literally everything about chemistry. Unfortunately, if you dont understand something during one on one tutoring, he makes you feel like an idiot and is very harsh in trying to get you to understand. Also his lectures are very confusing. Had to teach myself on youtube. Gives a lot of extra credit.
Extremely disorganized, confusing lectures. You really have to learn on your own because everything is too muddled to understand. There's also online homework, sapling, which is due in batches every sunday. There's two tests that account for a majority of your grade. Lab reports demand way more than what's necessary. Take another class if possible
Very disorganized on blackboard. Very tough grader. This is a class for NON SCIENCE MAJORS, and even my wife who is a science major had a hard time helping me. Very hard to follow.
The quizzes are two hours and are pretty hard, and they really aren't worth that much. Sometime close to the first day of class he told everyone that no one is going to pass his final or midterm. His midterms are worth a lot, so you don't do well because the test is super hard and your grade drops because its not backed by other points.
Stay clear away from this professor. Especially online classes. Due dates are never consistent. Tests are extremely hard, even tests us on things that isnt in lecture notes. Extremely hard final. Two parts. Part one took me THREE HOURS. Part 2 was a 2-4 page essay that he gives us to do and one gives us TWO DAYS TO DO IT during finals week.
He's probably one of the more divisive professors at Miramar. Some can't stand his teaching style, and others thrive. His teaching style can be really confusing, but you can mitigate it by acing all the homework and taking advantage of all the extra credit he provides. He is not the teacher for you if you're a lazy (or way too busy) student.
I regret taking his online class, maybe it was been better in person. I read the material, book, did the homework and still bombed the quizzes and exams. It took me all the allowed time to finish quizzes (1 hour) and exams (2 and 3 hours). Questions seemed pulled out of nowhere. Extra credit and adjusted final exam scores saved my grade.
He has a thick Filipino accent, and often skips words while lecturing. If you find accents hard, do not take. Lost of online homework and extra credit, but his tests and quizzes will kill you. I went into the mid-term with an A and came out with a C. By the time the DOUBLE final came around there was no way I could pass without a perfect score.
I took his class Spring 2018, at first I was skeptical in continuing his class. But he is a professor who encourage and will boost your true potential. Chemistry is a difficult subject but If you want to get a best grade you have to study. His accent was not a problema because he can really explain what he is talking about. Lots of extra credits
He was alright until the midterm came and then grades around the classroom became lower plus he got lazy with keeping track of grades. He grades labs and quizzes quite harshly and doesn't really offer a good explanation as to why you got that grade. His grading makes no sense when you are trying to follow along. Just avoid this professor.
Dr. Garces is a nice and knowledgeable teacher. His tests are online except for a two day midterm (yikes). Questions can be pretty tricky and confusing so make sure to do all of the EC (theres a lot) and HW. Its going to be a slog but if you work on getting ALL the "easy points" it will help buffer the low test scores. Only small handful got A's.
Professor Garces isnt very considerate sometimes. His work isnt hard but it is time consuming. Whenever you ask him for even a one day extension he disregards it. He makes it seem like his class is the only class youre taking. Also answers on his test dont exactly correlate to the question. You pretty much are on your own.
If you are a true hardworking person, you will appreciate him. Yes, the test is quite challenging. If you are taking chemistry just to fill in the requirement, it's tough to see his true kindness.
I was nervous about an online chemistry lecture but this was way easier than I thought. The homework, while not easy or quick, lets you try several answers before penalizing your grade. Sometimes if you use the hints available on the homework, you can get extra credit. The exams are long and hard! But they barely affected my overall grade of an A.
WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD. Took him for his lecture and lab and I cannot believe how HORRIBLE he was. He NEVER replied to anyones emails, he used lecture videos from 2011 that didnt even go along with the required textbook, and uploaded everything at the beginning of the semester and NEVER checked back in with his students. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
He pretty much just gives you the material and then dips and tests you on it. Everything is open note and if you do all the homework then you're fine. If you don't understand, just contact him and he will clarify, but other than that, he doesn't reach out to you at all.
He is the worst teacher. His classes aren't super hard you just have to basically study and do everything on your own. The tests are nothing like the lecture and the homework. The worst thing is he takes more than 2 days to reply to email. He is unorganized, unprepared, lazy and rude. (80% of the class got 65% or lower, no curve)
This professor is okay, he is extremely stick about deadlines and doesn't care if you are busy outside of class. He assigns an average of 3 quizzes each week, and 3+ assignments per week. Every assignment description is super confusing, and navigating his class is very messy. DO NOT take unless you have to and are a STEM major.
Unless youre a scholar in chem before you take this class, it isnt going to go well for you. Unclear on his grading, never goes over what you get wrong which will screw you over for the cumulative final. If you have to take him, dont, especially for lab. In class lecture problems are easy, exams are way more complex. Extra credit saved me.
Dr. Garces was not an organized professor on Zoom. His lectures are fine and informative but studying off them was not proven to help with tests. Students were experiencing technology problems but students still got faulted for it. He grades REALLY hard. He does given extra credit but its not really enough.
Communicating with the professor in an online setting was quite difficult because his instructions were really unclear and hard to absorb.
Professor Garces is the rudest, most unprofessional and cruel Professor. Tested on material never taught, questions not answered, completely unreachable. Rubrics differ on all of his class resources leading to a semester of confusion and unfair grading. 80+% of the class (the ones who didn't drop over the semester) are failing.
DO NOT TAKE!!! This professor regardless of the reviews does not teach well nor does he assist with actually explaining things. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed. Tests do not show what is being taught. Syllabus alone we barely passed because of how bad the tests are and the difficulty of the questions not always making sense.
The tests are way too long for such little time, too many questions that don't seem to be in the homework, grades by .5 points and unfortunately just not a good teacher using videos from the 90s where he taught long ago and the sounds of them not great quality.
Dr. Garces is a nice person, but as a teacher he leaves much to be desired. His lecture does not cover much of what you get tested on and is difficult to follow due to his thick accent. He offers extra credit opportunities, but make sure that you study on your own if you want to pass. I would learn things in lab before we covered them in lecture.
I've taken 2 courses from Dr. Garces. He's really personable and knowledgeable! He outlines what is expected of you and if you follow the syllabus, you'll succeed. The course is hard and math heavy, but Dr. Garces gives detailed lectures with clear examples and is always available for questions. If I could take another class with him, I would!
I took Garces' class hopes of completing my requirement for a Chem 100L, which I did but it was super difficult. Many emails were passed back and forth on how I can fix my grade but he would only respond to ones about me dropping or family emergencies. I wanted to get on zoom calls to understand better but he never answered back about it. Just no
This professor is quick to respond to questions via canvas, a trait that many other online professors lack.
Absolutely terrible. Doesn't teach. Basically have to teach yourself. Grades meticulously where if you make one little mistake you will fail your whole lab. Doesn't help at all and gives attitude when you ask questions. Labs are due each week so If you're not free and work a normal job don't take this. He RECCOMMENDS dropping instead of helping us
I was hesitant to enroll in Dr. Garces' course based on reviews but glad I did. He offers a lot of extra credit, so there are many ways to boost your grade. Reports are time-consuming but doable. Overall, really good prof and I learned a lot!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! He grades so harshly and words things very confusingly. He is super specific on everything but just expects you to know what he wants. He doesn't even have a grade published on Canvas, it's just points to date which isn't super reliable. He also is very judgmental with his comments on your work.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!! He does not explain what is required to do in the assignments correctly, he expects you to know how to do it. He does give extra credit but I definitely do not recommend him. The test are so difficult, most of the stuff were not even discussed in class.
He is the worst professor that I ever had in 3 years. He is not able to communicate with the students and total mess. I'm a hard-working student with a 3.9 Gpa but this professor is just out of line please don't take it unless you need this credit for life.
this professor gave in-class problems that would closely resemble exam questions. he would always reply to inquiries about the material and would make time to meet to answer our questions. he was good at explaining tough concepts as well.
I'm a hard-working student with a 3.96 GPA, and I am in my second year. I took chemistry 100L with him. the class is easy, but he will not give you more than half of the credit for the HW; it doesn't matter what you do for the homework. He's not a tough grader. He doesn't know how to grade.
I don't know what other people are saying. I enjoyed his teaching, he was there when you needed him (ON WEEKENDS!) and was very clear about what he expected from you. I loved this class, it was fun. I am also an "A" student but I had no issues with him at all. I recommend him to anyone who needs Chem100 Lab.
(+) Accessible through Canvas inbox & responds quickly. Lots of EC opportunities. Labs are not difficult but are time consuming. (-) Tough grader. Not lenient - stick to due dates and directions. This is a challenging class & you will most likely be overwhelmed & might have mental breakdown at some point, but if you do the EC you can get an A/B.
(+) Accessible through Canvas inbox & responds quickly. Lots of EC opportunities. Online HW is not difficult but is time consuming. Has lecture videos to help you understand the material. (-) Not lenient - stick to due dates and directions. (Overall) Lab was more challenging than the lecture portion. Do all EC opportunities and you will get an A/B.
I am a 4.0 student and have taken chemistry before. This professor is absolutely impossible. He grades based on the format you submit your homework and ability to follow his VERY specific instructions, not on what you are actually learning in lab. He is unreasonable and I highly suggest avoiding his lab at all costs.
This professor is absolutely terrible. He placates you as if you don't understand the entirety of an assignment when you ask a simple question regarding a minute aspect of an assignment. The format in which he demands you submit assignments is ridiculous as well. The timeframes he sets for being able to take tests is impossible if you are working.
He is a tough grader, but if you follow directions and do the time-consuming work, you will pass. I had a family emergency/personal issue that prevented me from attending the final. I messaged him the day before and he was very kind and understanding and ultimately passed me after I met him in person and turned in all supplies. Really nice teacher!
If you want to be able to come to class and have the lectures be valuable to your learning, have an accessible and understanding teacher, and have tests properly reflect the material, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He tries to help his students through his way of "teaching", but you will have to self teach yourself practically everything in this course.
i had a panic attack during an exam and he commented "glad you didn't have a panic attack and actually turned this in" on my homework after that. he also asked me if i "like doing things wrong" and was incredibly rude. i was horribly sick and he told me there was no way i'd be allowed to turn anything in for credit if i didnt come. save yourselves
Avoid at all costs. Very tough grader with no structure or organization to lecture AND lab. The grade i received was not due to his lectures, but to my own effort and multitude of extra hours trying to grasp the concepts on my own time. His tests are extremely unfair and nearly all questions are so specific and random. He is also unapproachable.
Do NOT take this teacher, thank me later
Trust me when I say DO NOT take this professor. I'm basically teaching myself, he's little to no help. Class started with about 35 people, down to 10. There are better options at mesa and city college.
He will not be any kind of help if you are struggling especially with the math part. I went to his office hours and he made me feel like an idiot. Do not take him. He messes up a lot on his work. Is never clear about things, so makes everything confusing. I wish I listened to the past reviews before I enrolled and I hope you will do the same.
This course wasn't nearly as bad as the reviews said. He grades slow and he has a final that has three parts which is kind of stressful but if you invest your time into your weekly readings and lectures you will be fine. In the beginning of the course there are a large amount of extra credit so get that done and you will be at a great start.
Most difficult/stressful teacher I have ever had. Makes SO MANY mistakes on his end with grading or his calculations and he won't correct the score when he is in the wrong, SO much work is expected and confusing instructions so it takes so long to even understand what he wants you to do. English is not his first language, Take another professor!
Professor Garces was a great teacher - fair, responsive, and kind. However, his class had a heavy workload with lengthy assignments and multiple weekly exams. Consider this before enrolling.
I'm genuinely shocked with his score. Professor Garces subbed in for my Mira Costa chem class due to a lack of support in that department. He was beyond kind and easily accessible via emails. He is a fair grader, he does take a while to get to grading though. However that never bothered me due to my confidence in my assignments.Would take again!
The professor is tough, but if you stay on top of the work and use helpful study tools like Unstuck study, you can do well. The labs are time-consuming but manageable.
Garces can be tough. Sometimes he'll make mistakes. It's a lot of work but going to tutoring will help. He also uses the curve method which helps a lot. Sometimes he's not very clear on what he wants from the class. But an okay class.
I took the CHEM100L online and although it was a tough course I do believe what is expected is extremely reasonable and for the most part I was able to follow the online lectures and keep up even with having a baby the first week of the semester. You are required to purchase/take home a lab kit and are given plenty of resources to follow.
Take this class if you enjoy unclear instructions and confusing grading criteria on labs/assignments. Make sure you dedicate 10+ hours of study time outside of lecture/lab to do well in HIS class. Don't fall for the positive reviews. They are clearly written by him.
He was one of my favorite professors, a really great teacher and approachable! You can tell he invests a lot in his students. Would recommend.
He has been one of the best professors I've had. He has a natural ability to make difficult concepts feel easy to understand. He gives multiple extra credit assignments to get your grade up, always offers office hours, and encourages you to ask for help if you need it. I would 100% take his class and lab again!
This professor's class was made up completely by canvas quizzes that served as both homework and extra credit. Although the class was entirely self-learning, the homework prepared you for the quizzes. The homework auto-grading contained multiple errors, but I see this being fixed in the future. Professor cares for students grades and curves tests.
Dr. Garces' lectures were difficult to follow and not the most engaging, but it is clear that he is passionate and wants everyone to succeed in his course. He offers a ton of extra-credit opportunities and also curves exams and your final grade. He is very clear on what is going to be on exams, so make sure to pay attention during lectures!
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! YOU WILL BE TEACHING YOURSELF He harshly grades on a basis on how he feels and what he feels; your answers can be correct, but he WILL DEDUCT points for breathing wrong. In addition, he is rude when you message asking for clarification or help, THIS IS SELF-TAUGHT!! Why is he hired as a professor if he does not teach! RUN!
Honestly, I would 100% take any of his classes again if I could. Chemistry is just hard, no way around it, just put in the work and study, and there's no way you don't get an A in the class. He also gives SO MUCH extra credit. Overall, a hard subject, great professor. Do
Lecture videos interesting , homework assignments heavy, doesn't allow extensions at all, not good. Lecture is extremely fast and not understandable, all over the place, adds extra assignments in the middle of the night .
